Stellar experience. Everything was superb from the furnishings to the hot breakfast to all the amazing extra and thoughtful touches. Easily worth 2-3x what the rates were. 6 out of 5 stars if I could.

This place is a gem. The hosts are the long-time owners and restorers of the house and they are wonderful! Don't worry about the spooky exterior, the place is immaculate inside and full of Dubuque history. I’ve stayed there 3 times over the years and will definitely be back.

This is my favorite go to bed and breakfast

Our room was very spacious and had an attached bath. This property is under renovation, but the hostess was very nice and we enjoyed our stay. Our room was comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was good, and plentiful. The baked peach was absolutely delicious! The exterior needs to be finished to be more inviting.

The staff(the owners themselves) were very helpful and friendly .

Wonderful hosts

I really appreciate how Dave is so passionate and energetic about the history and honor of the house. Richards' house has a unique character that transports visitors back to the late 1800s or early 1900s. They've done a wonderful job preserving the place and adding modern amenities that blend seamlessly, making the experience both charming and comfortable.

Michelle and Dave are amazing hosts. Step back in time to this historic home from 1883. Bed was great breakfast..beyond our expectations. The facelift of the exterior after 142 years is a work in progress and once you step beyond the scaffold and open the doors you will feel right at home. If you don’t appreciate old, go to the holiday inn..Richards House was fantastic

"Work in progress" on the exterior, but the interior has been painstakingly restored to the home's original splendor by the owners over several years. Once inside the beauty & craftmanship of a bygone era really comes alive. My wife & I stayed in the Library room and it was very nice. Michelle was a very gracious host and her breakfast including freshly made apple coffee cake was delicious. My wife was reluctant to stay from outward appearances of the property, but she was glad that we did!

The outside was in a sad state of disrepair which made it difficult to find (we drove past it twice), with scaffolding outside, missing paint, garbage around the back porch, and no visible house number or sign (so faded in was unreadable from the street). There was junk in the breezeway when you enter. When we left to go to dinner, a huge groundhog went running past the front porch and hid underneath the next building. The home itself had beautiful woodwork and fireplaces, with some original features and period furnishings. Our room had a broken window pane with clear tape over it, another two lower halves of windows were boarded up, wires sticking out out of the bathroom wall with plastic caps on them, a filthy rug in the bathroom, the mirror over the sink was quite dirty, and the toilet had to be plunged every time we used it. To make things really uncomfortable, the owner yelled at his wife during breakfast service, which was very unsettling. This would be beautiful if the building was brought up to code and repairs were made, everything was clean and tidy, and the owner didn't yell at his wife within earshot of guests. I wouldn't stay here again.

We were not warned before our arrival that there was scaffolding on the outside of the building. We almost didn’t go in because the outside looks like such disarray. We were pleasantly surprised when we stepped inside and saw such a lovely quaint renovated house. The inside was very nice. The service was great and the breakfast the following morning was terrific. I will definitely stay here again.
