The Ryokan was a short walk to nearby stations which made transport convenient. It is a good place to stay if you are looking for a budget friendly location and don’t need the nicest amenities. A thin traditional robe and towels are provided. The shared shower is relatively clean and there are two on each floor. This is not a traditional Ryokan, no meals are included in the stay. The room we stayed in had a moldy smell and was not clean. We did not receive fresh towels and we stayed for 3 nights, even though we did not put out a “do not disturb” sign. The sleeping mats were not comfortable. The bathroom is shared and was not always clean, I’m not sure that the staff cleans daily. Overall this wasn’t a bad stay but we were disappointed. If you are looking for a traditional ryokan, or a cleanly stay, I don’t recommend this hotel.

The location It’s our first time with the Japanese bed and seemed uncomfortable for us.

Decent reading light and was able to check in a bit earlier. Very appreciative of that.

It is an excellent location, affordable and clean. It was very quiet.

It was a good-feeling place with lots of locals. The room was cozy, and I liked how the shower was organized! Atmosphere-wise: everyone to himself, not touristy and not business-hotely too much. The bathtub was fully booked when I checked-in Entrance gets really crowded since there is cafe downstairs

We liked the traditional Japanese style facilities with the beds on the floor and they provided Yukatas to use which was fun. The room was very cute and cozy too. It's a pretty quick walk from the station with quite a bit to do in the area. The curfew is very strict, which was a little frustrating when we wanted to stay out with friends while on vacation in Tokyo. They won't let you in or out between 1am and 7am, which we found to be difficult. The rooms were pretty small, but that wasn't too big of a deal for us. The staff also wasn't super welcoming. They weren't rude, but just kind of kept to themselves and didn't interact with us much.

The location for this stay was great! as all of the staff were super friendly upon arrival, as definitely checking the cafe they have is worth to see! As being able to experience a full traditional stay is definitely something to try and Kimi Ryokan is that place!

Kimi Ryokan was the best of 4 different hotels that I stayed during my recent trip to Japan. This property offers amazing value. The rooms are above-average size (for Japan) and located in Ikebukuro which is a very convenient transportation hub with lots of good food nearby. For a reasonable price, you get to experience a Japanese ryokan complete with a relaxing Japanese bath experience (requires advance booking from 16:00 every day). The staff are super friendly. I would definitely return again. Some of the shared bathrooms are super tiny.

the location is excellent in Ikebukuro the entry has the old wood cupboards that give it character. there is an elevator as well as stairs our room was an adequate size our room was across from the bathrooms our room was near the one ofuro/hot tub which was made of hinoki. we used the showers in the ofuro area, not the ones by the sinks. plenty of sinks for multiple people the price is quite low per night we stayed here 10 yrs ago and liked the sparse ryokan, but the building has changed hands and with that, sadly, the atmosphere has changed. upon entry, one hears somewhat loud, modern music which is not at all soothng, but rather distracting. many people are coming & going to the restaurant, and the inn no longer felt like a relaxing ryokan, but a busy hostel. the first night, our room was across from a family that kept their door open, and their child was fussy and loud. it was rainy, and the hallway floors always seemed gritty the bathroom had public slippers, but one felt the splashing water from the sink was everywhere, even on the slippers. there used to be 2 ofuros, so scheduling time was more difficult with only one. the 2nd night there was long hair and all kinds of floaters in the tub. i jumped out & rinsed off. the tub was slimy a few inches all the way around the bottom edge, as if it was not properly scrubbed. i think the ryokan could have more instructions posted in the rooms & in the ofuro area to educate those of us tourists who are ignorant of Japanese customs. as small as the rooms are, one wishes they had added more hooks on the walls to hang up clothes, coats, umbrellas, etc. we hung our umbrellas in the window well to dry my son found the futon so thin & uncomfortable, he did not sleep well at all the 2 nights we were there, quite sore in the morning. we asked about shipping luggage at the desk and were referred to a place near by but no one was manning the desk, so we ended up going to Yamato

Make sure no one smokes cigarettes outside by the havnging laundry. This was after 10pm. I smelled and saw a smoker outside by the clothes, the smoke smell came inside and I looked out and saw someone smoking a cigarette. The cigarette smoke came indoors, that's how I knew someone was smoking outside. (I dislike cigarettes!)

The futons seemed a bit old and weren't the most comfortable. I also don't love hostel style housing but that really can't be helped with the style of the building

the staff were lovely and kind and the best part of the experience. they have a private bath you can reserve and a small mini fridge on each floor for your food. there is a cafe connected to the ryokan that I think has good reviews but i didn't try it my tatami room smelled of mildew and i had to run the a/c heater and leave my window open daily for the smell to leave, a bit run-down based on the furniture and walls, if not for the smell, i think it is a quaint and cheap ryokan. i am not picky and can tolerate most noise and run-down appearances, but i was very unhappy with the smell

We loved the cleanliness and friendly staff. Location was convenient for us. It was in a busy street but still quiet inside. Especially the wall with the bill from different countries. I like Kimi’s everything.

  • Engine customer Nov 2025

Incredible value for Tokyo. Nice traditional style rooms and very clean. Rooms near the communal toilets and showers were pretty noisy if other guests weren’t very considerate.

  • Engine customer Nov 2025

This ryokan was simply furnished and clean. The Japanese bathtub is a dream. Be sure to reserve a time to soak after sightseeing all day. The futons (sleeping mats) were thinner than expected. When my son and I requested extras, no one blinked. They brought the extra ones to our room and we slept so much better.

Be aware of the curfew between 01:00 am and 07:00am where you can't get into the hotel.
