- Beautiful historic property with well-maintained rooms
- Exceptional staff, often named individually, providing warm and attentive service
- Minor issues with cleanliness or room amenities, such as lack of hot water or washcloths left from previous guests
- Potential difficulties for some guests with stairs or navigating the one-way streets around the property

This is one of the best places I’ve ever stayed at!
- 5/5
I loved the warmth and grandeur of the old Inn. Along with it’s history. I enjoy staying in refurbished old houses instead of always going to modern hotels. The hard woods and decor are so inviting and relaxing. I loved the outdoor patio, the greenery the spaciousness of my room and the hospitality of the manager. Because it is old you have to walk up stairs with your luggage so it took me a few trips but that said it was good exercise!! But if you are unable to do stairs your stay here would be problematic.
- 5/5
Breakfast was a great, full offering of delicious items. Room was clean and just as expected. House has great charm.
- 5/5
It was clean, staff was great and very responsive and breakfast was very tasty.
- 5/5
Beautiful B&B great room great shower wonderful breakfast. Everything was perfect. Nothing
- 4.5/5
There was a loud couple right next door my last night of staying (drunk weeping laughing nonsensical), walls are thin since it s a historic building
- 5/5
Beautiful old wood great place, good breakfast and great owners. Highly recommend stay here!
- 5/5
It was a charming place in a great location. It was very clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Everything! This place is close enough to downtown that you could eat dinner or lunch anywhere within walking distance Nothing
- 5/5
Great historic location close to downtown with easy freeway access to get around. Staff was very friendly and courteous. Room (Piedmont) was as spacious, very clean, and comfortable. Board games and books readily available for patrons to occupy time with. N/A
- 4/5
Beautiful building, clean rooms and friendly staff.
- 5/5
I inadvertently booked a room where i had to walk down the hall to my bathroom. The very nice hotel manager was able to put me in a different room the next night. As an older person I appreciated that. This place grew on me. Its so near Old Salem and downtown. I was able to walk to many of my activities.
- 5/5
The staff was extremely kind and friendly! Much appreciated!
- 4.5/5
Great location, near walking path and a short walk to downtown. The inn is lovely and Shane is a delightful host. The room had a modern bathroom and was very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. The bed was comfortable, but pretty squeaky.
- 5/5
Staff was very accommodating. Location was excellent. Bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good. The property is interesting visually and has a good touch of history about it.
- 1/5
Very poor room maintenance. Substandard breakfast for a B&B. This establishment should not be listed as a bed and breakfast!
- 5/5
Absolutely beautiful setting! Everyone was so welcoming and nice. It was very peaceful stay.
- 4/5
We visited during an unusually cold spell and couldn't get our room warm enough.
- 5/5
Great inn keeper, breakfast was great, room was clean and bed was comfortable. I enjoyed the older house and all the character and experiences that older properties bring.
- 3/5
After we found our room we discovered our bathroom was down the hall. Not expecting that. The bed was lumpy and the pillows were not as comfortable as we like. In fact they were pretty flat. The bathroom had a toilet that was running constantly and I actually fixed it to be able to use it. The website advertises full breakfast. Was not even close. There were no eggs, no potatoes of any kind. Coffee was good though. Just a inadequate breakfast for us My wife and I most likely will never stay there again. Was not a good experience. A one and done!
- 5/5
This property was beautiful, well kept, cozy, historical, safe and had lovely character. I am not from a state that has many one way roads so the fact this Inn is located on the corner of one took a tiny bit of getting used to but with the help of navigation apps it was a piece of cake.
- 5/5
What an absolutely delightful bed and breakfast! The tastefully decorated rooms with the old world antiques to the lovely living room complete with piano was so charming. An elegance rarely seen nowadays. The breakfast was exceptional as well, with fresh cooked food, fresh fruit and delicious coffee. All served on real china no less!! I can’t recommend highly enough. The innkeeper Shane was friendly and helpful as well. One of the most delightful stays we’ve had in years, and all for a reasonable price. If you are mobility impaired, you can not access the larger rooms on the2nd floor. (No elevator)
- 5/5
The hotel is amazing, the staff is very hospitable, and the breakfast food is amazing to wake up too. Had a great view of the largest Winston landmark building. Even with bad snowy weather, the warmth and hospitality inside definitely melted all that away in my room. Will definitely return, this is my second stay and not soon to be my last.
- 5/5
A beautiful historic bed and breakfast with excellent hospitality!
- 5/5
Room was beautiful and clean and Shane went above and beyond to make sure we were treated special! We are newlyweds! Shout out to Shane! Shane is so personable and we highly recommend the Shaffner to everyone.
- 5/5
Very unique place Mattress was uncomfortable
- 1.5/5
Sorry, not much Floors in our room were very uneven…almost lost my balance walking across the room. Three floor walk up! No internet…
- 2.5/5
The staff was excellent, and met every request we had. The musty smell; a couple of things needed attention: one of the beds (Twin City) had a brace underneath that was cock-eyed; the table in the shower has a basket underneath that was hanging loose on one side (didn’t NEED to use the basket…just ‘looks-wise’); the key to the door of our room wouldn’t work easily…we had to jiggle and work with it…a LOT. The food was pre-packaged…not home-made. That’s why I go to B & B’s…I love the home-made breakfasts that are different every day. These were what we’d have found in a chain hotel. I have operated a B & B for 12 years, so that’s another reason I choose to stay at them…I know they need my business more that a big chain does!
- 5/5
The breakfast was amazing. The Staff was so friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again. They really made us feel at home. Location and house was absolutely gorgeous.
- 4.5/5
Excellent breakfast fare and service, but continental breakfast only on Tuesday and Wednesday. Served pleasantly on porch. This is a very old house with no elevators serving 3 floors, but otherwise a unique ambiance. Only 2 innkeepers who do everything they can to accommodate. Great security, as combination locks employed after dark. Interesting experience. Our room was very comfortable. Access to and egress from parking lot a bit difficult to a one-way street series, but more than adequate space.
- 4/5
The room was spacious, comfortable and very clean.
- 5/5
One of the best B&B we have ever seen
- 5/5
Great place to stay, very beautiful, very convenient. Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The price was great, Breakfast was also very good and you don’t have to pay for parking like at other hotels.
- 5/5
We were extremely pleased with the ambiance, location, attentiveness of staff and most of all THE BREAKFAST!! The biscuits and gravy are still being talked about. Rooms were clean, bed was comfy, the clawfoot tub in the room was to die for. We brought a bottle of wine and thought we were SOL — but the room had a wine opener and a bathtub tray to hold my wine and chocolate. Perfect for relaxing and had everything we needed — including water bottles and a mini fridge!
- 4/5
The pillows were good and bed comfortable. Nice place. Staircase is really pretty
- 5/5
Very cool place! Staff was very friendly. Rooms were very clean, decorated nicely, and had comfortable beds!
- 5/5
Shane is very welcoming and communicative.
- 5/5
Lovely stay! Can be a little noisy at night as its so close to the interstate but a really nice property and manager is super nice and helpful!
- 3.5/5
Accommodations are nice and historical. Location great for all events. I like the Inn but I dont like the change of menu for breakfast. I only stay here every year bc of that reason. The food was amazing in the past. Now they serve a continental breakfast and everything had to be heated up. That was disappointing. They need to update their listing to state the change bc that made the difference bc of the value it added to my trip. I won't be staying again unfortunately but the accommodations are very nice. Also they need to let ppl know that one of the rooms doesn't have a bathroom. Its in the hallway. Not a deal breaker but nice to know.
- 5/5
Loved the house!! Breakfast, coffee were great and it was walking distance to anything we wanted to do downtown.
- 5/5
The inn was a great experience. Innkeeper provides five star service. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Friendly innkeepers!
- 5/5
Historical. Nicely done inside.
- 5/5
The inn keepers were so courteous and kind. We really felt the hospitality while staying with the Shaffner. Thanks so much!
- 5/5
Very friendly staff!!
- 4.5/5
It was very close to the highway.
- 3/5
The breakfast though was inadequate and not tasty. I booked her because it's a bed and breakfast and it was highly disappointing.
- 4/5
The staff was wonderful, especially
- 5/5
Lovely historic Inn. Great gardening around the house. Pretty patios. Nothing.
- 5/5
Great historical house. A lot of character and antique furnitures. Friendly environment and excellent staff! Strongly recommended!
- 5/5
This is a 123 year old property, so naturally doors didn't fit perfect, etc. But this was once of the greatest nights I spent. The staff was a joy, and to find out that the owner of the house was the nephew of the founder of my hometown in Virginia was priceless. I will be back.
- 5/5
Chose the inn as a stay for a quick girls trip and it did Not disappoint! Shane, the innkeeper, was very communicative and helpful. We stayed in the Twin Pines room. It was so comfortable and well appointed for our needs. Breakfast was delicious! The inn was empty so we got to explore a bit and we are definitely coming back. The only thing i wish was a full-length mirror in the room
- 5/5
This is a very unique place to stay, and makes me not want to stay in a traditional hotel again. The staff were great as was the breakfast. We will stay here again!
- 5/5
Staff is super nice! Room was huge clean and nicely decorated. I love it. So much better than hotels. I felt at home
- 5/5
Perfect stay
- 1/5
The room we had reserved, the Piedmont Suite, was spacious and at first entrance was impressive. Sadly, we found the floor needed vacuuming, the ladies dressing table mirror was so dusty, you could write your name on it. Two lamps on either side of the couch didn’t have lightbulbs in them. Ironically, there was a big extension cord, that could be easily tripped on running across the floor to these two non-working lamps. The TV was not connected to anything and we had to use the inn’s WiFi to watch a movie on our laptop. We called the “emergency number” about the non-working TV and the voice mail message said they would quickly respond, but from our 7pm call, to the following morning, NO ONE CALLED. The toilet seat in the bathroom was loose and there was no body soap in the dispenser in the shower. The mattress in the king size bed was hard and VERY uncomfortable. The morning breakfast consisted of strawberries and blueberries, plain bagels, little pastries, boxed oatmeal, orange juice, coffee and water. Our reservation (see pictures) said we would receive a hot breakfast, but we were told at check-in that they said they gave their chef the day off and we would be receiving a light continental breakfast instead. No one even asked how our stay was as we were leaving. None of these deficiencies were reflected in the rather high price for the room.
- 5/5
Nice old style inn with pleasant staff.
- 5/5
Love the history and the historical part. The inside was so beautiful
- 4/5
Warm historic atmosphere, comfortable bed, excellent breakfast. But lacking some modern needed amenities like microware, fridge, independent thermostat.
- 5/5
Loved this little hidden hotel in the middle of WS. We booked the Piedmont Suite and it was massive, private, clean and quiet. Will definitely look to stay here again if the need arises.
- 5/5
We have stayed here twice now. One of our favorite places. They even give you a small bottle of wine upon arrival!
- 5/5
Amazing customer service!
- 4/5
But... It would have been nice to have some tissues in the room. Also, we think you should present the rooms as NOT having TV service (bring a book) rather than what was a frustrating time finding a channel and keeping service.
- 5/5
Love the beauty of this place very comfortable. Only draw back is the TV service. It might be nice to not have them is they do not work>
- 5/5
Loved the size of the room and the bathroom with the claw foot tub! Staff was super friendly and helpful, as well. The house/building is incredible and the amazing to stay in such a well maintained piece of history.
- 5/5
It was absolutely wonderful!
- 5/5
I love the service and kind people
- 5/5
The Shaffner Inn was lovely! Such a neat place to stay and the nicest staff. Very comfortable bed and great staple breakfast. Will stay again for sure!
- 4/5
The property was very clean and beautiful, but after 4 or 5PM it didnt seem like there was staff on site. I had no issues that needed staff. It is located right off the highway which was great. But I had to search for places to eat, nothing around, didnt seem like any restaurants within walking distance. The only food on site was breakfast between 8-1AM. There was water, hot choc and coffee in the room. This is the only reason I would not stay again.
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful from the time we booked our room until time we left. They offered a small bottle of red or white wine and asked my preference before we arrived as well as confirming when room was ready. The breakfast was great, which comes with the room. The room was very spacious, comfortable beds and loved the Victorian decor. We will be back.
- 2/5
I understand that it is an old historic facility and that there will be certain. nuances in keeping historical charm. This was a disappointment compared to other B&B's we've stayed at. Also it is on the corner of a very busy intersection and the noise can be a little overwhelming at times
- 5/5
A lot of character. Good b-fast
- 5/5
Old
- 4/5
The hotel is lovely and the breakfast was delicious
- 5/5
Great service and great room! Very clean and had a great stay. Will be back!
- 4/5
Food could have been better.
- 5/5
We like this hotel. It is so beautiful. But too noisy at night. Because the location is near street.
- 5/5
What a great place and great staff!!!
- 3/5
Check In was from 4PM -6 PM In 2025 that doesn't work people are coming various times in the day. Front desk person left just after 5 PM so any service or concern was unavailable outside of an emergency. Was sent a text saying I'd get some complimentary wine didn't see the text till after I settled in the room around 5:30 PM so too bad don't get it why didn't you remind me at check in. Also told at check in get 2 bottles of water, they were not there well the housekeeper was supposed to put them in the refrigerator, but she didn't and now I'm gone (after 5:30) So too bad. The wine and the water are really little unimportant things but demonstrates a level of service far below even low to moderate priced chains.
- 5/5
This place was different from anything we have stayed in before. The decor was interesting & there was a lot of touches that showed the owner paid attention to details. Our stay was pleasant.
- 5/5
The staff was perfect. The split of wine waiting for us in our room was a nice touch, and the complimentary table service breakfast really sealed the experience.
- 5/5
My husband and I stayed in the Piedmont Suite. It was a really nice room. It was very large with a sitting area. The architecture of this historical home is beautiful. The restaurant is nice with wonderful gourmet food. The staff are nice and very accommodating. The location is perfect. We really enjoyed our stay and plan to return!
- 2/5
We were there during a cold spell, and the room was cold. The desktop refrigerator was very small — we were traveling with snacks and soft drinks, and they didn’t all fit. An extension cord would have been useful to help us charge two phones and a CPAP. Waffles at breakfast were tasty.
- 5/5
Everyone was super friendly including Randall, Alyssa and Molly. The Wachovia room was enormous and well decorated, included a very nice bathroom with all the amenities you could ask for. Oh and the breakfast was fantastic !
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
It was a wonderful stay but the room was a cold.
- 5/5
Very lovely 100+ year old Victorian home. Spacious room, convenient location to downtown, hospitable staff. Will def consider staying again.
- 5/5
Historical Inn with Southern charm and engaging staff.
- 5/5
The property is clean. The innkeepers and waitstaff are friendly and warm. Parking and WiFi are ample and free. The beds are very comfortable. Very conveniently located. Lovely and historic. Owners continue to refine each inn and gently update the building systems. What you may need to know: some rooms are not well insulated for temperature nor neighborhood noises and highway. A few lightbulbs were out but quickly remedied. The route to the parking lot takes a map although in back of property, due to all the one-ways (find Brookstown Rd and that will get you there without the highway). I wish there parking lot and route with steps were better lit. There is one main floor bedroom but otherwise, you'll need to climb stairs. Make sure to check if your room has a connected bathroom or one down the hall - both are convenient but some people need that immediacy. I've stayed before and will happily stay there again.
- 5/5
Wonderful!
- 5/5
This is the second time we have stayed at this beautiful inn! Again, our expectations were met! The room, The Falls, was beautiful and spacious! Jada, welcomed us with a beautiful smile and made sure we had everything! My hat off to the chief for a delicious breakfast every morning! The servers were great! Alyssa and Molly will take care of you at breakfast and any other time! Mr. Baldwin, who greeted us every morning at breakfast wanted to know how our stay was going! Thanks you for a wonderful stay!
- 5/5
The room I was in was beautiful and clean, no bugs, and the food was amazing. Staff was wonderful and responsive. I will most likely be staying here again in the future.
- 5/5
We loved our stay! The staff was wonderful, the bed was super comfortable and the room was very clean. Included a delicious breakfast with the best biscuits I have ever eaten. The location was very convenient and we were able to walk everywhere. We will definitely return! Thank you for a great visit!
- 4/5
Staff. Very good for a small family owned inn. Very good.
- 5/5
We had a problem with our server at the Founders restaurant for breakfast. The server definitely had an attitude, and when I questioned her, she of course denied it, and she left early so that I never received my breakfast until the next staff came on!! However, owner arrived the next morning with replacement staff and made everything right for a happy ending. All is well that ends well. Lovely historic building with very large rooms.
- 5/5
Unique old mansion very close to old Salem.
- 5/5
Friendly staff! Excelled r breakfast! Perfect locarionnfid downtown. Quiet. Nice deck. Excellent service!
- 5/5
I enjoyed my stay, the privacy, the safety and breakfast was tasty. Also, the ladies were very nice and friendly.
- 5/5
The included breakfast was a nice treat.
- 4/5
There were a couple of unfortunate surprises. First is that there is no elevator and a steep winding staircase leads to the upstairs rooms. Not a problem for us - it's an Historic Inn after all - but others may have difficulty. More unsettling was that our bath - altho private - was down the hall. The Inn did provide robes for us to use, but the trip past a few other occupied rooms was a little uncomfortable. Had this been indicated upfront, we would have been better prepared or made other arrangements. Finally, the Inn has plenty of parking behind the building, but the route there requires moving 2 lanes to the right on an exit ramp from the expressway. Again, not a problem for us, but it does require some care. Overall, a lovely building and a good value, but guests need to know the circumstances.
- 5/5
Great staff!
- 5/5
Had a room without an adjoining bathroom but it was just down the hall. Took a minute to get used to but worked out fine for me and my wife. Would have brought slippers had we known. Aside from that no issues.
- 5/5
This was our second stay. It’s convenient to our activities and we love the complimentary breakfast.
- 5/5
Breakfast was very good. Everyone was very nice
- 5/5
Historic inn with beautiful rooms and art. The price included a first rate breakfast. They also surprised us with a lovely bottle of wine shortly after we checked in. Wonderful staff. Definitely recommended!
- 2/5
No room controls for AC. We froze at night in the room. Would not recommend or stay again.
- 5/5
Very personable attention and extremely comfortable beds, gorgeous rooms and can’t wait to be there again.
- 5/5
It was a very unique place to stay! We stayed in the Piedmont Suite and we enjoyed the jacuzzi tub! The room was very spacious. The Piedmont was downstairs and the food and mimosas were great too! Very friendly staff!
- 5/5
Stayed in the Wachovia Room. Nice and spacious. Loved the classic B&B historical decor. There was another room with a single door between us with another couple staying and they appeared to not understand the door was to another bedroom. Wouldn't hurt to make sure to communicate that better.
- 5/5
We enjoyed staying in the beautiful historical home, and the staff were friendly and accommodating.
- 5/5
Loved our stay!
- 5/5
Easy walk to bars and restaurants as well as to historic old salem. If we are in the area again, we will not hesitate to stay at The Shaffner again.
- 5/5
The room and facilities were fantastic. We really enjoy places with character and the building certainly has that. Every employee that we encountered treated us like old friends and took care of our every need. The breakfast in the resturant was delicious! Would definitely recommend!! Will stay here again if in the area!!
- 1/5
The property is excellent and the staff could not be more helpful. Everyone exhibited a “want to help” spirit that greatly enhanced our stay.
- 5/5
The staff has been friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
A wonderful historic, quirky hotel with spacious and beautifully decorated rooms. Breakfast was made to order and was delicious. Only 10 min walk from downtown Winston-Salem. Would highly recommend.
- 5/5
It’s more than what we expect
- 5/5
Amazing place Tatiana is amazing and very kind.will definitely come again.Racheal twcaa
- 3/5
1. were three locks on the door and they all stuck. It was very difficult to get into the room or to lock the door. 2. No room darkening shades. 3. Lacking ice machine or access to beverages or snacks.
- 5/5
Beautiful B@B in a very covenient location, beatiful room, courteous and attentive staff, excellent breakfast included, and appreciated the welcome bottle of wine. Very classy!!
- 5/5
We had the best time! Can’t wait to be back. Our stay was amazing and staff was great.
- 5/5
Awesome stay in the Piedmont room!
- 5/5
Nice historic location
- 5/5
Loved the breakfast and the staff was wonderful
- 5/5
Let’s talk about the staff, TT greeted me with a phone call to see what time we would be arriving, she wanted to make sure we could get into the inn after hours! She was very warm and friendly upon our arrival. Then the servers for breakfast, were phenomenal! We had Abby, Gary and Reagan as our servers for breakfast several mornings. As a person who looks at personality, warmth and doing their job I couldn’t ask for any better people to take care of us for that morning coffee and delicious food. Our coffee cup was never empty and every need was taken care of! They would take their time to talk to you and get to know you. The food that chef prepared was delicious and hot! The inn was well taken care of, beautiful flowers and waterfall out front, our room was very spacious and clean! I don’t always write a review because I expect people in the hospitality field to do their job! But with this inn and the exquisite staff I highly recommend this lovely inn! Thank you so much!
- 5/5
Thanks
- 5/5
Wonderful facility and great staff!
- 5/5
Very unique property with wonderful historic charm and decor.
- 5/5
Its very interesting set up we gad great experience in this old house. Restaurants around were real good. Staff were sincere and helpful. Old but valuable place.
- 5/5
Wonderful visit, welcoming staff, delicious meals, and the ambiance of an historic home. We want to go back!
- 4/5
We enjoyed our stay. Lots of room in the piedmont suite. Great breakfast! Very friendly and helpful people working at the property.
- 5/5
The property was very close to downtown and though a few blocks away it is walkable. There are many shops and restaurants downtown. The staff was very accommodating with any request. The Founders Restaurant was delicious with a menu to please anyone looking for a great brunch which was complimentary. They are soon going to open to the public for dinner soon. The only reason I gave four stars for cleanliness is because there were two wash cloths left hanging in the shower from the previous guests. The bathroom could use a bench or shelf under the window to accommodate toiletries. That's my only suggestion. We would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Anne belle was a gem!!
- 5/5
Beautiful Inn, great location. Friendly staff and great accommodations.
