Reviews
The hotel is generally well-liked for its historic building, central location, and friendly staff. However, there are consistent complaints about cleanliness, room temperature control, and parking issues.
- Historic building in a central location
- Friendly and professional staff
- Cleanliness issues, including unvacuumed rooms and hair in bathrooms
- Room temperature control problems and noise issues
- Parking difficulties and charges for WiFi

The hotel is located in a between downtown area with a lot of restaurants in walking distance to choice from. When we arrived valet was awesome and the hotel lobby was beautiful. They did have to change our room due to some small issues that were addressed immediately. The recreation area was so nice and the kids had so much bowling. We ate at Mellow Mushroom which was about 3 blocks up and it was worth every bite 10/10

We didn’t use any of the exercise equipment, so we can’t comment on that We enjoyed the adjoining restaurant very much. We took our dinners in the bar area. The food was outstanding, as were the bartenders and wait staff. We’ve stayed at the Kimpton hotel in Seattle and enjoyed those stays. The Cardinal fully met the expectations we had, based on our stays their Seattle facility. We live nearby your hotel in Palm Springs. Although we personally haven’t a need to stay there, we’ll be recommending the Kimpton Rowan to friends and family visiting us. The only negative thing we experienced was the shower. The faucet for the shower was directly opposite the shower head. The placement of the shower door made entering the shower somewhat awkward, evidenced when the water was turned on. We were hit by cold water until the hot water arrived.

Clean room!! Staff & bar was attentive with a great selection of beverages and food!

The 1st day the housecleaning did not replenish my washcloths and left 1 wet one in the shower. The staff at the front were very helpful and nice. Dinner was very good at Katherines.

Iconic building and well run. VERY convenient and free parking in the deck behind the hotel. It was the second time I was in a handicapped room. Those rooms are not proportional. And the shower does not drain well. Water is an inch deep the next day. Provide a sqeegee

Love this boutique, well located small cozy hotel. The restaurant and bar is fantastic. The views from several rooms are less to be desired however the rooms themselves are sizable with great bathrooms.

Room was spacious. Beds were super comfy! Really enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here once years ago and were happy to have another great experience this time! The amenities, game room, staff and happy hour are all fantastic and the art deco decor is really unique. The restaurant was very good and the rooms are clean and spacious. We would definitely recommend!

Very good
- 4/5
Wasn’t clean, room looked out onto a concrete wall.
- 5/5
Architecture and Art Deco details. Also the rec area in the basement.
- 3/5
They made us pay $25 for a movie. Even a movie from 30 years ago. No smart tvs where I could watch movies I already paid for. No trash cans in game room. Only a night stand between the beds, so person sleeping on outside has no nightstand for water or phone. Only free coffee no fruit. Beds were comfortable. Staff was nice.
- 5/5
Nice area and clean rooms
- 2/5
My AC was completely turned off so I had to have someone come to restart and get the temp down. The Shower head leaked the entire time I had the bath on. The sink was clogged and had to have maintenance to come repair.

What a cool hotel! Great coffee bar, and the downstairs game area and gym are so fun. The surrounding area was great too, with some restaurants within walking distance.

Everyone was extremely helpful. I stayed a few times atthe Cardinal, always a great experience. It is the reason I pick WS over Greensboro when I am in the area.
- 0.5/5
The property is beautiful. The hotel refuse to work with booking.com. They went out of their way not to answer two representatives and one supervisor. I’m recovering from cancer surgery and was wanting a night stay to recoup. I asked to upgrade my room to a room with a tub. I was told to speak with booking.com. I did. The hotel needed to approval the upgrade. The front desk person ignored several phone from booking.com. Why because she said she doesn’t like 3rd party agencies. I stay at the hotel for over 3 hours trying to get this hotel to speak with booking.com. They would not the front desk said they couldn’t call as well. Then the front desk person was able to find the same room that was $10 more on booking, but the hotel wanted to charge me $100.00 up charge. So I decide to leave. I was told they would refund my money for a nonrefundable room and that has not happened. I just wanted a tub and to soak. Instead I wasted what precious time I have trying to get this hotel staff to work with me. If you don’t want to work with 3rd parties or feel 3rd party patrons, like myself, are less than, then maybe don’t contract with those agencies. But giving me the run around is inhumane.
- 5/5
The room was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed our upgrade to the suite for our anniversary. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The restaurant was delicious and the valet service was excellent! We enjoyed our first visit to Winston Salem. Beautiful hotel!
- 5/5
Nice staff with a nice free happy hour 5-6. Clean rooms. Nice restaurant on site.

- 5/5
We have stayed at this hotel multiple times and each stay exceed expectations. The staff is great, and the rooms and building are always clean.
- 5/5
The Customer Service was over the top. Cleanliness and staff were outstanding.
- 4/5
clean, staff helpful.
- 5/5
We stay at the Kimpton regularly when we come back to visit family. The last room Suite we had faced the HVAC unit and wasn’t clean
- 5/5
The room and bathroom were both spotless, the beds were comfortable and the shower was great. The staff was also friendly and helpful. We loved the hot chocolate bar in the lobby and all the gorgeous Christmas decorations. *I think the beds could really use a comforter/duvet/blanket though. There was no weight to the bedding and it felt like we were just sleeping under a sheet.
- 5/5
Everything was good
- 5/5
Room needed a little dusting, floors little dirty
- 5/5
Everything was so clean. The room was very spacious. I would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
Very nice room, clean, good resturant and nice lounch area.
- 5/5
The room was excellent and the staff was extremely attentive. They reached out numerous times throughout my stay to ensure everything was perfect with my stay and offered assistance if I needed anything. Great guest service!
- 5/5
Lovely hotel in a classic old building. Thoughtfully redone. Really enjoyed our stay. Dinner there was excellent.
- 1/5
The entire thermostat unit was broken. The room was hot overnight and I could not sleep. I was there for an evening for a work conference. I had to call the front desk twice to get any sort of help - which none was granted but a 4 inch desk fan. Extremely dissatisfied by the customer service and support received and would NOT recommend.
- 1/5
Booked 2 rooms through Expedia. One for 3 nights and one for 4 nights. Tried to kick my daughter out her last day stay. Resolved through Expedia. Then, KC charged my credit card for an additional night. Still working on a refund.
- 3/5
Historic property was charming. Bar & restaurant lively & delicious. Three wedding parties made for a noisy stay. Surrounding area was rowdy - would not feel comfortable walking the area at night. Parking was a challenge & valet service was understaffed.
- 5/5
Excellent Hotel!!! My stay of choice anytime i am in Winston Salem
- 5/5
Our room was great, very roomy and the beds were so comfortable! We ate breakfast at the Katherine Resturant the next morning. Great food and service! If you are thinking of having a special event at the Kimpton’s, I highly recommend them!

Great all around service
- 5/5
What a hidden gem! Such a beautiful hotel and the staff were wonderful ! I will be doing a lot of business in the area and I will make this hotel a manditory part of my travel. Absolutely incredible!
- 5/5
Like the quick check in, love the building
- 4/5
Room was very large, modern bathroom. Bed needs replacing and hotel still has loud slamming doors, which was awful with boys soccer teams staying at hotel. Night wine, water reception was cute, could probably throw in a cracker, fruit? The hotel was stunning, charming as it was older, built well, but needs a refresh in rooms. Great location to shops, dining, all walkable. Bar made great cocktails, was busy.
- 5/5
Great historic hotel, just a little pricey
- 5/5
This is a beautiful building and the staff were all so friendly. I only wish I could have stayed longer. The fitness room is one of the best I’ve seen at a hotel.
- 5/5
We just stayed one night traveling to the coast. The check in was easy. They had valet parking. The bar/restaurant area was great. All staff we encountered were friendly and polite.
- 5/5
Was a great stay for me and my family
- 3/5
Starting to show its age. Lobby area was in need of a good cleaning. Morning coffee service was “broken”, a poor presentation
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel in a great location. Clean, modern, excellent staff. Really enjoyed the charcuterie at the lobby bar, too. My one complaint is the TV in the room was oddly ancient. Could not get any streaming channels. Could not even use Apple Air play to cast shows from my phone or computer.
- 1/5
Guest should be asked if they are ok with being placed on a pet friendly floor. Pet owners should be allowed to leave pets alone in the room.
- 5/5
Everything was fabulous. The room, the restaurant, and the rec facilities in the basement? What??!!?? The best I’ve ever seen in a hotel.
- 5/5
Awesome chocolate martinis
- 5/5
We spent one night of a long road trip at the Kimpton Cardinal. It was great! We ate an amazing meal at The Katharine. The risotto, beet salad, burger and dessert were phenomenal. Then we took the kids to explore the rec area. They bowled, played ping pong, basketball and shuffleboard. Would definitely come back!
- 5/5
Amazing
- 4/5
The Kimpton is a beautiful, family-friendly hotel that has all the bells and whistles. My children were able to have their first "hotel experience" with additional benefits of the basketball court and bowling alley. We enjoyed our time. The staff was amazing, attentive, and kind. We will definitely return.
- 5/5
The kids really enjoyed to rec room with bowling, billiards, and basketball court.
- 4/5
Laid back hotel with valet parking Our exterior view of the city from 4th for was disappointing. Dogs in this hotel and one barked early in the am in our hall. Valet guys were mostly great but one guy was not so great. Delayed us by disappearing with our keys and trapped me in between two cars but otherwise ok. Hole-y towel Bar service was ok Restaurant was ok Room service had a good burger and bread pudding but forgot our drink and ketchup. Room stayed cool and shower water pressure was nice. Thank you
- 5/5
Beautiful property. Amazing bathroom.
- 5/5
The conveniece could not be beat and the atmosphere was so uplifting and fun it put a little "pep in my step." Checkin was so pleasant and welcoming. We will seek out more Graduate hotels to stay at!
- 4/5
The staff were amazing, food quality was excellent in hotel restaurant. The only issue was that the room was very hot (76 degrees) and we could not adjust the temp ourselves. Although the hotel staff was responsive when we called the front desk, it took several hours for the room to cool down. I wish the room would have been 68 upon arrival.
- 5/5
Gorgeous bar and great French restaurant. Such a pretty hotel. Would definitely stay again! Comfy bed and pillows.
- 5/5
We stayed one night to attend the Edgar Allan Poe performance three blocks away. The staff was super friendly and helpful with finding somewhere to eat and suggesting on places for spirits.
- 3/5
Small rooms. The shower wasn’t cleaned properly. Room 522. Had blood spots on the wall in front of the toilet. At 7:45 am the smell of marijuana came through the air conditioning vent, so strong we were worried about it making our clothes and luggage stink. Check in area was tiny, we had to drive around the block several times and eventually park in a parking garage instead of using valet parking. Very close to the train tracks, but I wasn’t bothered by that.
- 4/5
Gorgeous property.
- 3/5
The hotel has been redone but has the feel of an old property. The most frustrating was the service
- 5/5
The property is beautiful and large and staff was great,Everything is available on site
- 5/5
They did a great job refurbishing the property, keeping the old character and charm while mixing in modern amenities. The facilities were very clean and the staff was very helpful.
- 3/5
Reserved a room with hot tub and living room, day of booking my room was changed with no hot tub no seperate living area and only got a 3 dollar discount. The only reason i booked the room there was the hot tub for mothers day. The room was clean, I did not like the parking deck being a block away and my fridge had no adjustment and wasn't very cold. Other than those things it is a beautiful property.
- 5/5
No comment.
- 5/5
We really liked this Hotel during our stay in Winston-Salem. Would highly recommend it.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, great amazing and a super fun rec room!
- 5/5
Beautiful clean new hotel with great style and pleasant people
- 5/5
Great valet service, fast and easy. Excellent fitness center, beautiful rooms, lovely afternoon wine in lounge, nice in house restaurant and good for dogs . Walkable to parks and restaurants
- 4/5
I liked the historical significance
- 3/5
Had trouble finding the Hotel. Poor small signage and bell hops looked like part of downtown crowd and couldn’t tell they were bell hops
- 5/5
Nice spot. Easy to park, good food. Clean property.
- 5/5
Front staff person could have been more helpful. Bar staff was a little slow in the service. Front desk person was very helpful.
- 5/5
Great location and even better staff! The rooms were very clean and had almost everything you may need. Would definitely recommend!
- 5/5
This was a great spot in the heart of a very cool city.
- 5/5
This hotel absolutely exceeded my expectations! It punches WAY above its pay grade. It's gorgeous, historic yet modern and the hospitality was top notch. Spacious room and bathroom with every amenity. Any time I find myself in Winston-Salem I will be definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
This was a FANTASTIC property - such a beautiful building and in outstanding shape. What a remodel! I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
- 4/5
I loved the valet crew/system. You use a QR code and the guys bring up your vehicle quickly with a smile on their face. The price is a bit much ($28 a day plus tip) but it was super convenient. All of the staff (housekeeping/hostess/valet/etc) were all very friendly. It made for a nice trip!
- 5/5
Beautiful place to stay, tad bit expensive for the occasion. But the wife loved it. So I guess it was a success.
- 1/5
Poor customer service
- 5/5
Our stay was wonderful! Beautiful place and service was excellent
- 4/5
Hotel is cute enough and staff was nice .
- 5/5
Lovely hotel. The room was immaculate, comfortable and quiet. Staff was very nice.
- 5/5
Stayed for one night and loved the ambiance, and comfort. We ordered room service from Katherine's and food arrived within the hour. Nice sitting area in the lobby. Kid friendly. Walking distance to many bars and restaurants.
- 5/5
Great location & close to everything
- 5/5
Was exactly as desired staff was super accommodating and pleasant even with the less enjoyable tasks such as checking luggage on the last day to grab lunch before taking off.
- 5/5
A perfect solo downtown experience.
- 5/5
Great place..I only wish the community room was open the hotel guest
- 5/5
Beautiful property
- 4/5
Beautiful. Elevators. Art deco. Service. Food. All above and beyond expectations. Only downside was the room thermostat that wouldn’t go below 67 degrees for a good night sleep. Too warm with the beddings.
- 5/5
We had a wonderful stay for our anniversary!
- 5/5
This is a beautiful historic property with an exceptional French restaurant (Katherine's) on premises. Rooms are smallish, as you might suspect, but with the quirky Kimpton charm and high quality. There is no parking lot and a lack of on-street parking.
- 3/5
The property was nice enough, but the staff weren't very welcoming at check in or check out. I did get a different staffer that was much nicer when I went downstairs to ask for more towels and pillows which I had to do since neither they nor housekeeping answered the phone. Our "view" on both sides of the room was just random HVAC equipment and the roof which was disappointing. Overall, I'm not sure this property is worth the price point which is disappointing as I've stayed here in the past and had a MUCH better experience.
- 4/5
At first the parking was confusing. The hotel only provides for valet parking. However, there is a parking garage across the street, but it requires you to have an app, i.e. no press the button for a ticket. There is another parking garage behind the hotel on Church St, which is where the valets park you car. it does have a push the button for a ticket entry. The hotel itself was pleasant and the desk staff, especially Kevin, was very helpful in giving directions. My room was clean, nice and I appreciated having an alarm clock which was easy to set. The dining room seemed to have a limited breakfast selection. I only ate dinner there once. The only thing the hotel of this caliber lacked was some sort of business center where you could log in on their laptops and do early check-in with your airline and print out boarding passes. Even La Quinta hotels have that amenity.
- 5/5
Beautiful property. The bar is wonderful and the drinks and food were delicious. The game area is a lot of fun. Walkable to downtown activities.
- 2/5
We really liked the hotel which is in a historic building and most of the staff was outstanding. Most of the people at the front desk and all of the people in the restaurant were just incredible. However, on Sunday, November 23, our room was not made up, and the front desk had asked if I had left the do not disturb sign on, I did not, and I asked for some towels and soaps, and told them not to bother cleaning it up as it was late. They sent nothing and said nothing and so when I left the next morning at five in the morning, I let the person at the desk know and he apologized, but that was it. I’ve been at hotels where this happens before, and they usually go way out of their way to Apologize and try to make things right. I did not get the feeling that anybody was terribly interested here. I rarely leave bad reviews because I know every company/person has a bad day. But here, I think more could have been done if they didn’t have somebody to give me towels or they didn’t have towels they could’ve called my room and let me know. Would’ve been fine. The restaurant was another story. They were most kind and really made you feel welcome.
- 5/5
This hotel was phenomenal. It was impeccably clean. The staff was friendly and helpful, and gave great restaurant recommendations. The hotel had a great gym as well. Everything was perfect.
- 2/5
The hotel is rated to be an amazing place to stay. It has wonderful decorations and strives for excellence but to me falls short. The room size for the price was way too small. Especially the bathroom. There was no microwave. The snacks in the room overpriced. $6 for a snickers this isn’t a stadium. I asked three times for my air conditioner temp to be lowered but they never did. It said 67 but the room felt between 72-74. The elevator has added security but they don’t tell you that when checking in. One elevator was struggling to work. They tried to charge me for valet even though I didn’t use it. This hotel was a more let down.
- 1/5
So many things went wrong with this stay I can’t even begin to list them. I will say this.. everything could have been addressed if there was a single person who gave a damn. Pretty much the entire front desk staff should be fired. Incredibly rude and dismissive, None of them know a damn thing about hospitality. This is coming from someone who has been in the boutique hotel industry for 25+ years.
- 2/5
The bathroom sink was clogged and would not drain. Rather than try and call again for someone to fix it, I just took it apart and fixed it myself. 8:45am multiple knocks on door from housekeeping with DO NOT DISTURB SIGN ON THE DOOR! Could not fall back asleep. I needed to stay a second night and inquired with the front desk about booking a second room. They quoted me a price that was $50 more than Hotels.com and would not come down to match it. I asked wouldn’t they rather I booked direct and was told “I really don’t care” Front desk was rude and dismissive. I’m not sure what’s happened to this property. I’ve stayed here probably a dozen times since this hotel opened, back as far as their opening week in 2016. Honestly it’s more disappointing each time. Unless something changes I’m sure this will be my last stay.
- 5/5
It was a fabulous stay. Thank you so much!
- 4/5
The facilities at the hotel are nice, and the game room can be fun. I wish (personal view) that there was simply more lighting in hotel - the hallways, lobby, restaurant, etc. are fairly dark.
- 5/5
Definitely will book again!
- 4/5
I love the Cardinal and try to stay there whenever I’m in the area. This time, I found that the pillows were ROCK hard and so thick it was impossible to sleep. Our necks were very sore for the 4 days we were there. Still hurting! Mattresses were lumpy and room service mixed up our order 3 out of 4 times. The croissants were very stale, too. Housekeeping left the accumulating dirty glasses all over the room the entire time.
- 5/5
My stay was awesome! very clean, very luxurious.
- 5/5
clean and classy with a neo historical/vintage vibe. rooms are unique from an interior decor standpoint. favorite thing about the room is there is a tub spout shared with the shower BUT a separate spout for a handheld. nice touches like that make it unique.
- 5/5
Best hotel in Winston-Salem
- 2/5
The customer service representative was unpleasant throughout the entire interaction of checking in. He was outside smoking as we entered the lobby, when he finished his cigarette he stated that we should have let him know we were checking in. There were zero nicety’s, he was shaking as if he was furious, took longer than usual to check us in, especially since we had a reservation. The experience was upsetting. To say the least! Hotel is a nice accommodation, we typically stay there when visiting Winston, unfortunate that this transpired.
- 5/5
It was a great property
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel in noveau art deco style. Really dug the vibe.
- 5/5
Absolutely loved the staff and the property!
- 5/5
Great atmosphere, game room downstairs unexpected bonus , wonderful staff and service
- 3/5
Noisy at times. Dog friendly and dogs are barking at night…slowest elevators I have ever seen in my life… very overpriced for what it is…you would think that you are lodging in Chicago or NY.
- 5/5
Always super friendly and accommodating staff. Always stay here when travelling to winston-salem!
- 5/5
Exceptional property - welcoming and helpful staff, beautifully appointed rooms and terrific dining options.
- 5/5
Gorgeous building within walking distance of everything in downtown Winston Salem. Excellent staff, valet parking, and the restaurant is delicious. Great bar, too!
- 5/5
Very nice stay
- 5/5
Beautiful property in up and coming area of Winston Salem. Will stay there again.
- 4/5
It was not n a historic building with a fantastic restaurant the Katherine downstairs.
- 5/5
Great hotel with lovely rooms, excellent restaurant and attentive staff. Didn’t enjoy the smell of pot smoke in the hallway. Doesn’t that fall under Non-smoking?!?!?
- 5/5
The property is so beautiful
- 5/5
Great hotel. I really like the Kimpton hotels.
- 5/5
Fantastic stay. Staff were very engaged and met our every need. The room was spotless and just advertised.
- 4/5
Friendly staff and good location in the heart of the revitalized downtown.
- 4/5
Beautiful historic building in downtown Winston Salem. The hotel was close to everything we were there to see. City is ver walkable. As an added bonus they have a two lane bowling alley, indoor basketball hoop, video games and a pool table. We enjoyed our stay.
- 5/5
Nice place to stay like lots to do
- 3/5
other hotels around jsut as nice, cheaper, better food and more convient parking.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel
