I absolutely love the Salamander. For the past two years, every trip to the DMV area requires a stay there. I love the cleanliness of the rooms are comfort of the beds. For the most part, the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. However, during my most recent stay I requested an amenity for my bath via the test messaging service and never received it. I’m not sure if this was a technology issue or if someone simply dropped the ball. Nevertheless, from now on I will call the front desk with any requests rather than utilize the text messaging service.

This hotel was one of my favorites when it was still the mandarin oriental. It just doesn’t have that same class and grace anymore. The staff are not well trained and everything takes an excessively long time. The food in the lounge was terrible. The cocktails were the same as a pub and lacked craft. Turn down service was completely skipped for me, so I had to call to get additional water and coffee pods. The tv’s do not have chromecast or app capabilities, leaving you with basic cable options. This hotel felt more like a 3/4 star rather than a 5 star. Not a horrible stay, but there are certainly much better options.

Amazing stay. Clean room. Staff was awesome. Even though our first room had some candy wrappers on the floor and a charger they upgraded our room to a better room. The in room service was amazing as well. Would definitely stay again!? It’s close to everything.

Last minute stay booked for an overnight. I’ve Stayed here twice now and had great experience. I never visited the indoor pool but so great to hear both indoor and outdoor pool! A little disappointed no mini bar in room and paid 89$ with service fees for room service for the $59 bottle of wine that costs me $13 at Walgreens but it’s what I expect at a 5 star hotel! Room service food was delicious both times!! Will stay again for location and if still great price! Would love to see hotels in area offer locals a discount!

Location, Room size, cleanliness. Buffet breakfast. Service charge sometimes automatically added to bill and then asked to pay a further Service charge. More a hotel for conferences/business meetings than a hotel for families/couples.

This was our first time at the DC Salamander (I have been to the one in Virginia a couple times, including with my child). I brought my child here for a staycation, in the middle of snowmageddon, because we were tired of being cooped up in the house and I wanted a change of scenery that involved a pool. They did not disappoint. The pool is indoors, which was perfect for what we needed. It is also heated (though, in 10 degree weather, "heated" was definitely relative). The rooms were clean, beautiful and nicely sized. The bathrooms were HUGE and the soaking tubs were so luxurious. Perfect for a post snowy day soak. We ordered room service for breakfast and it was delicious. The staff was so friendly and treated my child and me with a lot of kindness and grace. Would definitely recommend and return.

nothing went well Due to mismanagement of housekeeping staff the hotel did not have my room ready until 8pm, I had to wait in the overcrowded lobby with thousands of other guests for over 5 hours who were also stuck wating. Everyone was frustrated and miserable. During my 5 hour wait, when I went to the lobby restaurant to try and eat I was told I could not be seated because I was a single guest and tables were only for groups of two or more. in the morning I waited in line for 30 minutes to enter the restaurant to eat the overpriced breakfast buffet which reminded me of the Hampton inn- food was awful so was service-again.

It is not a five star property as advertised. Rooms are nice, bathrooms great. Amenities were lacking. Minibar in room was not stocked, said to call if you wanted it stocked ?? It could have doubled as a in room fridge but was not turned on. Coffee maker (nice espresso machine) in room did not work. Informed front desk and just asked for a kettle for tea. Said they would get it to us ‘’right away” but did not get till that evening. So much for breakfast tea. Compounded by the fact that the kettle was broken and did not work. Took down to front desk and they said a replacement would be ‘right up” . Never did get in 2 more days . Only way to get ice was to request from front desk. Did so and 2 hours later still waiting. Toiletries in room were in big containers in shower that anyone prior could have used or abused. Maybe ok for holiday inn but not in a “prestigious “ hotel. The staff themselves were pleasant and friendly but they were frustrated by lack of support by management. The lobby was a mess, lots of people waiting for front desk or other reasons, no organization. The bell staff and valets were very good but was expensive. Drinks at bar were not up to par being poorly made. Breakfast buffet was very good and service was great. I usually don’t do reviews but felt I should in this case. I have stayed in many other 4 or 5 star properties and this just did not live up to its expectations. Nice people but just poor follow up and direction.

The doorman and bellmen were great. The restaurant service was not good at all, the wait time was so long. The waitress would avoid looking our way. The hostess and waiter got into a fight in front of us because he didn’t want her to sit us at that particular table. The service was slow in both restaurants. Upon arrival the first guy checked us in and we waited almost an hour because he said they would call us when the room was ready. No one called because he never checked us in. The second guy finally checked us in only for my room to be dirty crumbs all over the rug. We went back downstairs and they moved us to another room on the 9th floor but we lost the view we had on the 6th floor. Service was not good, food was ok.

The hotel was amazing. #1 The staff were very polite, helpful and attentive. Room and hotel were very clean and well maintained. Brunch on Saturday was full of choices and kept fresh. Many healthy options. Only difficulty was that the main bar and restaurant were small and options limited for menue choices. Few tables available, service slow. Difficult with children to find other options for food and snacks other than the one main dining option.

My husband booked a deluxe king with water view rooms for staycation. The room was in good condition. Comfortable beddings and fluffy towels; however, not worth $700 a night. The staff was just okay. The service did not feel like a 5 star. That nice warm welcome was lacking. Our check in time was delayed because the room wasn’t ready and when I called in he front desk for them to honor late check out, they only agreed to 30min extended time, and rushed me off the phone. The service at the restaurant at the lobby was horrible. They got our order wrong and waiter didn’t come to check on us. I had to go hunt the restaurant manager to be attended to after 30mins of getting out food. Big turnoff. Save your coins and put your money towards a hotel that has exceptional service, I will not be returning to this hotel

Terrible. Have been frequent patrons of Mandarin Oriental before - 2 to 3x an year. The renovations from Mandarin Oriental to Salamandar is severely dissappointing. Rooms are lackluster and feels cheap. They also add on an additional daily charge of 35$, when questioned about it- they said oh it’s to cover the gym, pool, etc. Excuse me? I thought this was a 5 star hotel? So paying $1000 a night is not enough to cover the gym and the pool?! Seriously ridiculous. So sad that Mandarin Oriental is no longer here. Will not come back to this hotel anymore when visiting DC. Oh and also their daily car parking has now increased to 85$ a day!!!

The property was very beautiful. I love the location. I really enjoyed the rooms. They were very comfortable. I had the issue of the charge for I think it was called a travel fee or something of that effect. I can’t recall exactly but you have to pay for your Wi-Fi and bottles of water and coffee from the room even though it says it’s complementary. I’m not sure how something can be complementary if you have to pay a fee for it. I also believe that for what you’re paying for the hotel I don’t believe that we should be paying additionally for parking. I believe that that’s something that should’ve already been built into the price. Also, I believe for the sauna and hot tub. You have to pay extra to use those things like get a day spa pass again that’s something that I feel like should be complementary and included most hotels that have a sauna. You don’t have to pay extra to go into that that’s a part of what it is

My only negative is the restaurant. We decided to eat there since we were tired after a long day. We ordered a charcuterie board to snack on in our room; this took 1.5 hours to get to us. When it arrived the meat in one section of the plate was rancid and had to be sat outside the room due to the smell. We went down to the desk to tell them and they assured me that it would not be charged to the room. We then decided to eat in the lobby since it was late and we were tired. I was told at the host stand that there was a 30min wait which was fine, so we gave them our info and sat in front of them in the lobby 20ft away. The staff ignored my family, sat other parties while making us wait for over an hour (till i complained again). They then offered to serve us on a couch without a table which i told them "no." When we received the food it was cold and definitely not worth the money. The bartenders also need to be educated that mixed drinks should actually be mixed and not presented as separate layers of liquour in a glass. Upon check out our invoice still had the charcuterie board charged to us which i had to go back to the front desk. Like i said; the staff from the doormen to the housekeeping are wonderful but the food staff needs improvement.

The room was nice, but not nice enough to justify the price. I’ve stayed at Marriott properties that were nicer, but much cheaper. I really wanted to try this property because I heard so much about the Salamander, but I was disappointed. I was expecting bells and whistles for the price. Our room only had 1 bottle of water and no one ever answered the phone at the front desk when I tried to call to request another. The valet parking is RIDICULOUS! $86 per night is highway robbery and there is no option for self parking. I stayed 1 night and was charged for 2 days of parking. I’m glad that I looked at my bill. I’m still waiting for my credit card to be refunded. I doubt that I’ll stay here again when planning another stay in DC.

We did note that the latch on the room door was not completely screwed in, additionally, we dined at the Dogon restaurant & called down to the front desk to get a refrigerator brought up for our leftovers. After 30 minutes we called again, only to be told that there were no more refrigerators available. We found this to be unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber and wonder why there is not a better system for patrons of the restaurant. This was the only mar on an otherwise enjoyable birthday celebration for my husband.

Loved the room, the staff and the overall experience. The bathroom was amazing and we had a view. We did room service twice and the staff was excellent. Room Service- Although the sandwich was good, a club sandwich, fruits, orange juice (x2) and two pepsi should not have been $171 not including top. I understand room service is expensive but that was insane. If we never called to check our heat, we would be freezing to death. We had to go out and buy extra blankets because I also had a baby with me that was freezing. They eventually came to fix it the night before we checked out. I think it would be great to have some form of microwave or water heater in the room because I dont think we should have to get room service for a cup f hot water to make tea. Not everyone wants coffee.

Next, when we arrived in the room, several lights did not work, the automatic blind on the main windows did not operate (my wife does not like to fully close the curtains at night, so she was perturbed at this), and the shower faucet was quite complicated, which finally then revealed that the water pressure was quite low on 8th floor. When we discovered all this, we had already unpacked and were going to bed, so it was too late to ask for another room. It took to the third day to get everything fixed. On Sunday, we discovered the one channel we wanted to watch on tv, Fox News, mysteriously no longer worked (a black screen). Literally, every other channel was fine. They had not fixed by the end of the day. Food was good. Beds were comfortable. But we would not return after our experience. We ended up checking out Sunday night, as our plans changed and we did not need to stay until Monday. When we asked for some credit for all the inconveniences, all they offered was to remove one meal from our room. They may have removed some other daily charges, but it did not show on the bill, so it felt insufficient. We will not return.

Having stayed at both Salamander Middleburg and Hotel Bennett, this property doesn’t live up to its sister properties’ quality and experience. The water pressure was nearly a drip and barely warm, the mini bar was not pre-stocked, and in-room entertainment was limited. Also, the view from my room was facing construction but that isn’t the fault of the business. I suggest paying for the water view if you enjoy waking up to natural environments. With that said, the staff were friendly and diverse, and the 24-hour room service came in handy. I wasn’t able to get a reservation for Dōgon but that seemed to be a draw for guests. I will not return to stay but will return for dinner only given the great restaurant reviews. This hotel visit was for my husband’s birthday so was hoping this property met or exceeded our expectations - it did not. This location has some work to do.

As a VIP member, I was expecting to receive the 2-hour late checkout benefit, but unfortunately, this was not honored. Upon check-in, I requested a late checkout and was told to return at 7 PM to check availability. When I did, I was informed there was no availability, and only after insisting was I granted a checkout at 1 PM — still not the 2 PM I am entitled to. What made this experience more frustrating was the inconsistency in service. During my check-in, I overheard a guest being offered a 4 PM checkout without issue, and I was told that the standard checkout time is 12 PM. However, the plaque in my room clearly stated the regular checkout time is 12 PM — meaning I was misinformed by the staff member who initially told me it was 11 AM. This inconsistency and lack of acknowledgment of VIP benefits left me feeling misled and undervalued as a guest. I hope you will look into this issue and take steps to ensure all guests — especially loyal VIP members — are treated with fairness and consistency. I would appreciate a follow-up and any compensation or gesture of goodwill you can offer for this experience.

Wonderful location, clean and comfortable rooms. Food terribly overpriced- do NOT get the Breakfast Buffet!!! We waited 35 minutes for a table and then We paid $172 for 2 adults and 2 children, the options were very limited and everything was lukewarm warm! By the time we got back to our table everything but the oatmeal and coffee was COLD. We had to ask our server if we could heat up our plates, cold eggs, cold bacon, cold potatoes….cold waffles. The manager said they had asked the kitchen for a fresh refill for the buffet…..after another 20+ minutes of waiting for that food it finally came out, we could have gone anywhere else and paid less for a hot timely meal….it really ruined our impression of this hotel as it was our 1st time staying.

Booked two rooms for one night via Expedia and had to extend our stay. They extended our stay at their rates, substantially higher that Expedia and when asked for them to match the price, they declined because there are no rooms available and Expedia is displaying the wrong information. Manager Eskodar at the front desk was rude and noted that “we’re lucky they extended our stay” because the rooms on Expedia don’t exist. Horrible customer service for a manager to tell me that I’m lucky to stay at the property - how about thank you for staying with us - should be retrained.

The guest experience at this beautiful hotel really exceeded my expectations. Mr. Gonzalo Patino ( Front Office Mgr) who was very kind and empathetic patiently listened to my grievances and within a few minutes, solved the problem. I have to mention by name some of the wonderful staff like Sabrina & Alexandra who made my checking in and checking out a breeze. To Malik, Dewayne who carefully handled my luggage (even though I changed my room) and Felipe you always had a smile at the door and greeted me going in and coming out to Dolly and Natalia, who served me at the dining area (delicious breakfast)with such grace and poise thank you all for being AMAZING.

The service at the Lounge was shockingly poor. We had to waive down 3 different servers in the span of 30 minutes and were told they would be right back to take our order and never came back to greet us or take our order. When we finally went to the bar and requested them to send out a server …we ordered 3 apps and drinks and after over waiting an hour, nothing ever came out. I’ve honestly never experience such horrible service from an establishment and would never return. Lastly, the Fourth of July BBQ was over priced and not worth what was advertised.

Initially, I booked from Tuesday to Thursday, but I extended my trip three times—first to Friday, then to Saturday, and finally to Sunday—because I enjoyed myself so much. The spa experience was phenomenal. I had two full-body massages and a facial. Francesca and Dewayne, the massage therapists, were amazing, and Lisan, who provided my facial, was kind and professional. Their attention to detail and ability to make me feel completely relaxed were deeply appreciated. One of the things I was most excited about was staying at a Black-owned hotel. Once we arrived and got checked in the stay was wonderful. We were delayed arriving due to severe weather and they had to reactivate our reservation which was a little concerning. The facilities were excellent, we used the indoor pool twice during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only real complaint we had was the cost of breakfast our first morning, the only time we ate at the hotel. It cost us over $100.00 for a buffet that did not have much of a selection, rather disappointed in that. Otherwise the stay was terrific.

We arrived at the hotel and, upon entering the room and placing my bag on the coffee table, I noticed debris on the carpet—it was dried mud all around the bed and footprints on the table. I immediately contacted housekeeping around 2:30 PM and asked them to vacuum the carpet. They assured me they would be there shortly, but they never showed up. I cleaned the coffee table! It wasn’t until the following day that I had to go to the front desk in person to have my room cleaned. It’s unacceptable to be given a dirty room—both from a hygiene standpoint and as a matter of the hotel’s ethics. This was a very unpleasant experience.

The property itself was of a high standard - good accommodation, clean, very well situated and nice setting. However, the whole experience has been marred by a loss of nightwear which was inadvertently taken from the room. Part of the set was found by housekeeping and given back via the front desk, but we were promised follow up from a member of management. We waited twice in reception but no-one was apparently available, and the second time, we had to leave for the airport. Despite sending several email chasers, we have had no acknowledgement or reply. I'd consider that poor in any circumstance, but given this is supposed to be a high-quality hotel, I find it completely unacceptable. Very frustrated and dissapointed.

At one point we realized my younger son left his retainer in the case inside the car. I thought the valet would direct us to the car but they actually went and retrieved the retainer case for us and delivered it to our room. The lobby bar was very nice, good strong drinks, however it was closed on our last full day due to a private event— so we were unable to grab a quick drink when we wanted. The only downfall of this hotel for me, is its lack of restaurants, bars, or nice cafes in the immediate area. Although it is walking distance to MANY must-visit places, museums, monuments, and National Mall… we did have to Uber or drive to every dinner out. This wasn’t a dealbreaker but when I booked I assumed there would be places to eat in the immediate area upon leaving the hotel. That being said, every hotel that is within the center of the city is much more expensive for much less space. I am very happy with our stay and I would highly recommend it to others who are looking for an amazing DC trip.

The staff was amazing, they really went out their way to create a great experience for us, even the doormen/valet guys looked out for us. My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary and we were very disappointed. The room was clean, but dated. The bathroom was nice. However, the service was terrible. After staying at the Salamander in Middleburg, where the employees were so kind and helpful, staying here was a huge disappointment. We went to the front desk asking for ice and champagne glasses as we had a vintage bottle to enjoy for our anniversary. The front desk employee said she would send it up shortly. After over an hour, we called to inquire on the status and they said it was coming. After another 40 minutes, we gave up and called and said not to worry about it. It had been over two hours at that point, and instead of being apologetic or kind, the employee was rude and dismissive. For the amount of money it costs for a one night visit, the disregard for customer service is frustrating. The overnight valet parking charge is also ridiculously high. This wouldn’t have bothered me so much if the customer service was great. Maybe my expectations were too high after our fantastic weekend celebrating an anniversary at the Salamander in Middleburg 2 years ago, but this stay was a big let down.

Our family felt very safe and welcomed by the ataff. Our room was clean and very comfortable, although we had to ask for washcloths 5 of 6 days. Also, the concierge wasn't very helpful.

The hotel is beautiful and located in the perfect spot. Only downside was waiting 30 mins to get in my room because they were still cleaning which they accommodated with a free drink card

The facility is very nice and the staff are all extremely service oriented. Everyone was helpful from the housekeeping to the front desk and concierge services. Had a problem with no hot water one night and the next day which was eventually fixed after a couple of cold showers. Also, the bar was crowded and while they said they could get us a table with a little wait we never got in and had to go out for food elsewhere after waiting more than an hour.

Property is beautiful and ideally located. Absolutely loved the music playing in the lobby as well as the popcorn at the bar. However, the brunch was NOT worth the money. Nor was the stay. Very few amenities. But the rooms do have a Nespresso machine which is great! The staff was always friendly, especially the doormen. However, I was given competing information about the checkin process from two different front desk clerks. Additionally the hot water went out in our room for about a day - something I do not entirely hold against the hotel - but I expected that the inconvenience would have been accommodated more than an offer to shower in the spa. I guess for it to cost 2 to 3 times more than the other hotels I looked at, I just expected more.

Very posh hotel clearly targeting the business professionals of DC. The staff and service are great. Room had a few issues but the view of the river was perfect. Did not get a chance at dinner but menu seemed very nice. Breakfast buffet was not great and very overpriced.

I will never stay there again. Although the hotel was beautiful and the food was delicious, we were treated like we were invisible. Doormen open doors for many others, yet I opened most doors myself. A maid entered our room after checked in. The concierge, Jennifer appeared polite and accommoding over the phone, but when she asked us to meet her in the lobby, things changed. She greeted us with smiles and offered to honor HER promise to provide a $60 resort credit AND provide a $100 credit for our breakfast buffet bill due to the invasion of the maid. (Buffet breakfast for two adults was $85+tip) Several hours after checkout, my credit card was charged a $160 room deposit fee and a $35 room service fee. The $60 resort credit was not applied. Jennifer deleted that $60 credit after meeting us. She did honor the $100 breakfast buffet credit, however, that won't be confirmed until all charges are final on my credit card. I did appreciate the early check in and the late check out, but I will not return due to the treatment by some of the staff.

Our room was very nice The cold showers were not the fault of the hotel, but of a boiler that was faulty, I understand. We had breakfast at the hotel three times and it was very good! I clearly understand it was an insanely busy weekend! All in all, I thought everything went smoothly except for the showers We would certainly come back again

The property is beautiful and very walkable. The food service is a disaster. 24 hour room service is a joke no one answers phone 20 minutes guest services does not answer 20 minutes. In person trip talking to manager at front desk got food to arrive 60 minutes later cold. If you want food walk to wharf.

All of the staff were very attentive and responsive when we had issues. The hotel was walkable to the wharf, tidal basin and museums. It was kid friendly (staff was so sweet to our 1 year old, supplied crib and baby toiletries and had small play room). Our main issue was that it felt like the hotel’s dining options catered to people not staying at the hotel and we were never able to eat in lobby/on terrace. As a result, We ended up having to spend a lot on room service as the main walkable restaurants were on the wharf, and while there is a pedestrian walkway, it requires you to carry stroller up and down two flights of stairs, which we weren’t always in the mood to do.

Overall, a wonderful property. There are clear maintenance deficiencies throughout the property. There was a large blower outside of my room attempting to dry the hallway carpet from a water leak. The smell from the blower was quite naturally unpleasant. The sink in the bathroom didn’t drain. However, these are isolated issues and don’t necessarily reflect a persistent problem. Overall, great value and experience. Well worth the investment and time spent.

This stay at the salamander was a little less than my expectations. The one thing that made things better were the managers, they were on top of everything. Although there were some things subpar the managers professionalism and troubleshooting for resolutions made it almost effortless. I would like to say thank you to Joe, the housekeeping manager, he was very kind and understanding. The restaurant was good. The location was excellent a 10 minute walk to the wharf. Close to the monuments. Another area that I feel that can be worked on a little is the valet parking. I'm accustomed to pulling up to a valet parking stea, and someone opening up the door to greet me, and get my key, but at this hotel I sat in the car and if you sat there they would never come open up the door. However when it was time for their tip they ran like you wouldn't believe to help. My room had the view of the Potomac, it was beautiful. Nice amenities. Fire pits, indoor pool, steam room, spa and gym. The only coffee machine in the room was the espresso my husband or I like expresso. That bathtub was to die for. Don't put bubbles in you will slip and slide. Just the plain water. It almost seemed filtered.

There was a towel hanging in the bathroom with spots on it, when the bed was made the first night it was apparent the sheets were not changed and they weren’t tucked under mattress. For 2 adults only 2 washcloths were left in the room and when we asked the cleaning lady for 2 more she said she didn’t have any. There was a strain of hair on the floor in the bathroom and that was going to be my indication if the floor was swept, it was still there. For the cost and high end resort there should have been more attention to detail. The resort is beautiful, but not meeting expectation.
