Our initial room had a broken toilet that we told the two girls up front about and they said they would send a maintenance man up but when we left for a few hours and came back it was still broken. There was a new worker up front and when we told her about the situation we were moved into a different room which helped but was still inconvenient. The roof bartenders were good. The server doing breakfast Sunday was slow and only came back to the table rarely. Parking was also 20 minutes away unless you wanted to pay $60 a night. We won’t be back

Great location and I love the vibe of the hotel. The cleaning of rooms is poor. They don’t bother cleaning thoroughly. One day I left at 7am retuning at 18:40 and housekeeping came to clean at 18:45 and I sent them away. They don’t restock towels accurately - one day I had 3 bath towels and no face towels for two days. It also took me 12 hours and multiple staff to convince them the temp in the room was not the temp on the maintenance person’s handgun. The staff are nice the location and building are great it would be good to better manage the property.

Looks can be deceiving. While this hotel was aesthetically pleasing, the nice decor covered a lot of issues that added up. The staff gave us drink coupons to use at the hotels three restaurants, which was nice, but we couldn’t use half of them. The Treehouse rooftop restaurant was small and crowded, requiring a reservation (which we were not informed of at check-in). We were able to snag uncomfortable seating on the patio where we could order with a QR code, which rendered the drink vouchers useless. We decided to try the basement restaurant for dinner instead, The Singing Tiger. We were the only patrons on a Saturday evening which should have been an indication that something was off. The food was amazing!! However, our main waiter was inattentive and since gratuity was included in the bill (for two people), he didn’t have to work for a tip. The kitchen staff was more attentive than the waiter. For breakfast we wanted to try their small Pantry restaurant, however they did not open when advertised. We asked the front desk of the Pantry would be open that morning and we were told that the waitress hadn’t arrived yet and he wasn’t sure who it was or when they’d be in. We walked to Union Market and got a lovely breakfast Buffalo & Bergen, instead. The room itself was nicely appointed but everything was cheaply put together. The coffee maker didn’t work, the cheap iron barley worked, there weren’t enough towels or counter space in the bathroom, water pressure was low, etc.

I would advise using the iPad white noise sound machine that is provided tuned up to its highest level to drown out the persistent alarm sounding from the next door apartment building and/or parking ramp alarm that rarely stops. I didn’t discover the iPad white noise was available until the next morning following a difficult night trying to fall asleep with a pillow over my ears 😉

The location to get to the sites is awesome, take it with a grain of sand. New York Avenue is still sketchy=graffiti on the adjacent building. The roof top bar/restaurant is very nice, great staff, food above average and then of course the prices. The hotel location is a very good value overall BUT 2 things I gotta warn folks about: Parking, only a few spaces at the hotel, I got the last one, They told me parking in the garage was $60, SURPRISE !!! Parking at the hotel was $45, something I would have factored into my stay. Our room was tiny. There was only enough room for the 2 single beds and not much else and the view was dismal. Staff was great.

Rooms were clean, and the staff was super helpful. A couple of things that would make this stay a bit better… Phone and watch charging were challenging. Nothing close to the bed and the one outlet close to my side had a multiple outlet insert but did not work. So I had to unplug that to be able to connect directly into the wall to charge. Nothing was available on the other side of the bed. Also, neither light on the stands beside the bed worked. Just so anyone thinking about staying knows, the bathroom is tiny with the sink outside in the bedding area… wasn’t expecting that, but we made do. Overall, a great stay. Would definitely do it again! Love the quaintness!!

The hotel overall was cute and has a good vibe to it. However, I did not enjoy my stay because the temperature control of the room could not be changed. During my stay the AC was stuck on 67 and no matter how many times I tried messing with the thermostat, and it saying I changed the temperature settings, nothing changed. I was freeeeeezing the whole time. It was very uncomfortable. Also the shower was way too small

Overall Hotel Nell is such a refreshing different type of hotel. It brings me back to another time when emphasis wasn’t on a corporate look or style. It’s not just that it’s reasonable and ranks highest on all the usual dimensions of cleanlinessThe atmosphere is relaxed, the staff—largely young people—are not only friendly but like what they’re doing. We stayed for two nights in a room with two twin beds. It’s strengths go way beyond the usual with excellent cleanliness, helpful

This hotel has a great vibe and the staff was amazing! We went downstairs to the Singing Tiger and enjoyed Dan Dan noodles and pork belly buns and had exceptional customer service from the bartender:) it reminded us of a speakeasy because it was an unmarked and had dim lighting. This is a wonderful idea. Right now, the execution is not there. First, I went up to the rooftop bar, no lights on, no one there. Wow. No warning about that not being open. The breakfast was excellent. The common spaces were nice, although the chairs look nice, they are not very comfortable. My room was VERY small. Could barely squeeze by to get to the other side. Sink in the room, shower, camode in another room. Kind of an odd setup but ok for one. My room was across the hall from a corridor that looked like it came from the car park, separated off from the rest of the hotel. This felt odd and felt like it was less secure than it ought to be. Try to get a room on the second through fourth floors.

It opened up a whole area I had never explored! Right in the middle of a converted industrial area teaming with unique eateries, independent shops and street art. Really nice to walk around in. The rooftop area (at least the evening we came in) seems disorganized. We were 2 people at 5:00 pm. We just wanted a snack and drinks. The restaurant was nearly empty. We were greeted with anxiety at our not having a reservation, saying they had "lots" of reservations coming in. When they finally decided they could accommodate us, the server was inattentive with getting our order, water etc. Considering she told us we had to leave at a certain time, this seemed counterintuitive. I saw several other walk in's experience the same treatment/confusion at the nearly empty resturant hesitating to seat couples. At some point several large groups came as we were getting ready to leave, but things could have been friendlier and there could have been more grace.

The hotel is beautiful and the restaurants as well. I was disappointed in the low number of staff. The people who were there were lovely, but there were not enough people working to help all of the people that needed help. It was disappointing that my bathroom ceiling was leaking, but they did fix it promptly. My in room refrigerator didn’t work and wasted all of the leftovers I brought back, and there’s no microwave, even if it had been edible. The roof restaurant bartender and manager were standouts of my experience. The biggest problem I had was a lack of staff assistance and or the complete lack of luggage carts that has resulted in serious back injury and needing to take time off of work once I returned home. I feel that in about a year hotel Nell will be an incredible experience if they continue to improve.

The Hotel is very cute decorated and artsy. I really enjoyed the environment but there are few things that blindsided me on my visit to the hotel. The hotel is in a business area (Union Market) directly around the corner. The events go all night long with music and activities So if you are a light sleeper, you may have trouble with getting rest. Also, the hotel has absolutely "No parking". The closest parking garage next to the hotel is $45-$60 dollars a night so it would have been a lot easier to bus to all the daily events. If you can get around those two characteristics you will absolutely love the spot!!!!

Front desk lady assigned a room with a defective door. She refused to change the room and wanted to force us to stay in the room until the repair person came to fix the door. We were tired and needed to rest, but she ordered us to rest at the lobby chairs or to go to the market while someone fixed the door instead of assigning a different room. Finally she called for help only to have a person come to the room, to verify that in deed, the door lock was not working… She even accused me of being “difficult” not realizing her directives (to rest in the lobby or go shopping) were patronizing and disrespectful. Eventually she assigned us a different room. This happened on March 30th in the evening… Probably not coming back after several stays…

Two problems for me - First the street noise was problematic! The hotel is located on a very busy street and there is a lot of traffic on this street 24/7. And don’t get me started on police and fire truck sirens. The staff’s fix for this was ear plugs. Second, I was attending a conference that started between 8-9am every day. The restaurant in the hotel didn’t open until 8:30 and 9am on weekends. That meant locating breakfast somewhere else which was Blue Bottle Coffee. Great little place but limited options. There were not any other options around the hotel that I could find.

The only reason I am rating some aspects of this property as a 4 is because the water in the shower just never got truly warm. That was pretty disappointing. We also had issues using the complimentary soap in the shower because the bottle pumps were turned to a locking position or broken.

I think the only thing the property has going against it is the thinness of the walls and doors. I could hear conversations through the walls as well as other guests TVs all night. for heavy sleepers or people who might not mind. this hotel is absolutely gorgeous and worth the stay! and the staff was incredible! but the building itself needs some TLC in order to be a place id want to return to. being so susceptible to other guest’s noise is a quality of a hotel that matters to me. also unrelated but the bed creaked and was not the most amazing bed. but thats me being super picky. i dont regret my stay here but i do not think i will be back. huge thanks to all the staff for being SO sweet and kind.

Parking, forget it, if I would have noticed in ads anywhere that there was no parking I wouldn’t have stayed. Added another $100 in parking fees to our stay, plus Ubers. I’ve never been to a hotel without a parking lot so I never thought to look( I’ll take some of the blame for that). The best experience I had at the hotel was the rooftop treehouse bar. We were here for our wedding last summer, and we came back for a mini weekend getaway. We love Hotel Nell. Quiet, unsuspected gem in Union Market. The only “weird” thing was that there is no additional lock on the door as is common in most hotels, but it is not a safety concern, just something I’m used to seeing and it wasn’t there. We’ll come back for our anniversary! Love Hotel Nell.

The hotel's pricing appears disproportionate given the limited parking options and the $60 fee charged to guests at the nearby garage, particularly since the parking attendant's guarantee of a waiver is not honored upon exit. Considering the basic amenities provided, the hotel may not offer the best value for the cost, which is unfortunate.

Love love loved it. I try to alway book at boutique hotels. Great details & staff is superbly nice. Alti (sp?) absolute sweetheart who made our stay personable. Inviting lounge area. We did two twins which next time we will upgrade to a larger room with hopefully a larger shower. Shower was small & not of a fan of how the shower curtains stuck to us while showering. Good temperature as a hot shower is one of my musts. Slept extremely well & the bedding & ac kept us from ever getting hot. That was a first. Nice rooftop bars with great views & delicious tacos. Complementary incentives for the restaurants were a plus. We came Saturday night. Brunch downstairs 5/5. I had a simple American breakfast & it was done well. I will remember that bacon forever. For Sunday the other restaurants were closed so staff recommended we walk to first street with lots of other great restaurants. Wish they had a rewards program because I will be rebooking.

What an impressive property! The pictures exactly represent the careful curation of vibe and feel. The rooftop restaurant has both great energy as well as incredible food and staff. I enjoyed everything I ate and drank at this hotel. The lobby has great coffee every morning, wish i had the time to eat there. The room I had was spacious and well furnished. Looking forward to staying here again and again. Keep in mind the area is a little busy so there can be some additional noise. However, that didn't put a damper on all the benefits you get from this hotel. The F1 arcade around the corner is also super fun, great drinks and food.

Room was very clean, love the way things are decorated and very comfortable. I tend to run cold but housekeeping provided blankets very quickly! Will definitely stay again when we visit our family in DC. Thank you very much. DC has many hotels to offer and I've stayed in many of them over the years when my travel to DC was always work related. Hotel Nell was a delight and a jewel among a lot of very nice but predictable hotels that are typical. Hotel Nell is just fun and unique. Don't miss the opportunity to stay there and the location is also fantastic. NOMA is a very fun area with lots of delightful finds to discover in the area.

THis was my second time staying here and I came back because they have good food for breakfast and the rooftop bar. I was quite disappointed when I checked in and my TV didn't work. They weren't open to moving me to a different room because apparently the internet was down in the whole hotel. The internet actually worked so I was able to get work done, but imagine no entertainment on your one night away from home a month. Not sure I'll be returning anytime soon. After I requested complimentary breakfast they obliged. I also don't love the location on a really busy main road.

Pretty good hotel with pros and cons. Pros: it is different from chain hotels, the staff is great and the neighborhood feels to an extent like the DC version of funky Bushwick in Brooklyn. Cons: the hotel has very few parking spots, the water pressure in the shower is very weak and the hotel has no gym.

A very hip, industrial style hotel with an excellent breakfast. The rooms were spacious, clean and had a good sized desk. Staff was really nice. Only drawback was no on-site fitness facility. There is a partnership with a center nearby but it wasn't explained at check in and website explanation seemed complicated. WiFi was out when I was there. ATT cell reception wasn't great in my room. Better in lobby but still not strong.

This was my gf's second stay at hotel nell and she was pretty disappointed compared to her first stay. The front desk staff was not as friendly or welcoming. The soap dispensers In our room did not work and we had to ask twice for someone to fix them. Even then, only one of the the two soap dispensers were fixed. Our Room had an ironing board but no iron. I recently stayed at Hotel Nell and unfortunately my experience was far below expectations. Cleanliness was a major issue. The room did not feel properly cleaned upon arrival, and the overall condition of the property appeared worn and poorly maintained. Several areas showed visible signs of deterioration, which made the stay uncomfortable from the start. The room itself was extremely small — much tighter than expected — leaving barely enough space to move around comfortably with luggage. On top of that, the beds and pillows were very uncomfortable, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Noise was another significant problem. Whether from the hallway, neighboring rooms, or outside, there was very little sound insulation. Rest and relaxation were nearly impossible. For the price paid and the expectations of staying in Washington, DC, this property did not deliver in terms of comfort, cleanliness, or overall quality. I would not choose to stay here again unless major improvements are made.

The first night of our stay an unknown person tried to access our room - twice - while we were sleeping. waking us up. When I alerted the front desk attendant, she told me management reviewed security footage and filed a report based on what they saw (they believed it was another guest who was drunk) but we were not provided additional information, offered a different room, or any form of discount for the situation. We were only booked for two nights so we stayed, but it was a very uncomfortable second night.

Second time staying at Hotel Nell and definitely not the last. Great little boutique hotel with the best staff. Easy parking right in front of hotel if available. If not, parking directly behind the hotel not even 50 yards. Due to its smaller size it is so easy to get an elevator, and to your room. Stay was decent, and area was pretty central to everything! The first room we received was spacious, but we had issues with the TV cutting of and on top of that, only one outlet worked. When attempting to freshen up, we noticed there was no hot water in the sink. We informed the front desk and they were apologetic while moving us to a new room. The new room was smaller, but TV and outlets did work. Unfortunately, our keys stopped working for the new room on several occasions. When trying to inform the front desk, we noticed a lobby full of people with no one there to greet them. One of the guests told us they had been there for an hour waiting for someone to return. Kudos to the manager Adam for stepping in and getting everyone taken care of, but we still had key issues until checkout. Also, the Asian restaurant was not open the entire duration of our stay, but Treehouse and staff were very personable. Shout out to the gentleman with the dreads (we forgot your name, sorry!) for turning our experience around.

However, they will scam you out of your money if you pay for early check in. They also do not have clear instructions on where to park since there is limited parking. They told me to go through a parking app and it did not give me the option for the closest garage, but rather one that was miles away claiming it was a 5 minute walk. Lastly, the walls are thin and sounds echo through the vents. Although the employees came to handle the loud guests it wasn’t long before they were loud again. Could not sleep. Just make sure you plan accordingly if this is where you choose to stay.

It is a converted industrial building which brings great charm and character to the property As a European I found the room sizes on a par with many I have stayed in around Europe , although I appreciate they are on the small size when compared to the typical American chain hotel The staff were very helpful and polite and that are two restaurants on site and lots of options within walking distance We found it a very good base to explore DC

I am very familiar with, and wanted to stay in, the Union Market area, and I am used to the quirks of boutique hotels, but I feel I was misled by other reviews. I upgraded in advance to their nicest room and it felt dirty, kind of creepy, and half-finished. The furnishings were bare, cheap, or extremely worn; the rugs were all sitting on bare floor and pulling up at the corners; the bedding was pilling; there was no toilet lid; and all the light bulbs were some kind of cheap purplish LED. My room was also loud and facing a busy street, but that isn't really within their control and wasn't a dealbreaker. After seeing the room I immediately left and went to another hotel despite not being eligible for a refund.

Stayed for a few nights, very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant is really great and convenient, and the rooftop bar has a nice view and vibe. They gave us coupons for drinks at the restaurant and bar which was really nice. The room sizes are bit small but clean and comfortable enough. It is right by the main road and the walls are very thin so we could hear everything which was the only frustration. It’s a nice distance to the centre and really cool aesthetic.

Loved the overall aesthetic of the hotel. Rarely stay in boutique hotels but the price was too good to pass up. Overall, friendly staff. I will definitely give them that. Bartender on the rooftop bar didn’t seem like he really wanted to he bothered but he did his job and the drinks weren’t too bad. Only 2 things that would deter me from staying again is honestly the price for parking…$45 per night. Street parking is scarce! I was a bit sticker shocked after paying $90 for only two nights. I think its worth factoring in some type of validation or discount for driving guests. Also, $100 PER night for holds is unreasonable. So if I stayed 5 nights, a hold would be $500??? That’s a bit outrageous. Definitely wouldn’t do an extended stay for these two factors alone but one or two nights is cool! Didn’t worry about noise or cleanliness. That was all good. What you save on the room, you will definitely pay in parking. If you’re not driving, definitely a top 3 place to stay!

Wonderful in every respect. Staff was great, having 2 restaurants on-site was very welcome, and the character of the place is pretty cool. It's an old seed factory/warehouse so there's a lot of interesting architectural tidbits all over the place. Perfectly clean. Smaller rooms than I expected but tasteful. Very quiet rooms internally, the only noises came from outside, through the windows. Side note: parking sucks. The parking ramp is small and fully occupied and tight corners to get in and out, so don't bring your biggest car.

Hotel Nell exceeded my expectations from the warm welcome at the reception to the excellent room conditions. The hotel's ambiance was truly inviting, with a soothing scent reminiscent of lavender or frankincense that made me feel at ease. The rooftop bar was impressive, and although I didn't get to indulge in food or drinks, the atmosphere was lively with a great crowd. The customer service and hospitality were outstanding, making my stay truly memorable. Given its proximity to Union Market, where I had a fun-filled weekend, I'd highly recommend Hotel Nell. This hotel is perfect for couples, singles, and adults looking for a sophisticated getaway, but I wouldn't recommend it for families - it's clear that this is a spot where parents would want to let loose and have fun! I'll definitely be back next time I'm in DC.

The coffee shop in the lobby was super convenient in the mornings, though I wish it stayed open later in the day. One downside: our room faced the highway side of the building, and the street noise was intense. We only stayed two nights, so we didn’t ask to move, but if you're booking a longer stay, I strongly recommend requesting a room not on the street-facing side. I've stayed in downtown New York and heard less traffic and sirens at night. We also checked out Union Market nearby, but were disappointed. Not much was open for breakfast, and even later in the day, options were limited — seems more like a lunch spot. Overall, Hotel Nell is a clean, comfortable hotel with good amenities and a very convenient location — just be mindful of room placement to avoid the noise issue.
