MATHIS Retreat Ubud

Lovely view from the hotel's pool, peaceful ambiance with green and lush garden, amazing breakfast with lots of options, very friendly stuff. We enjoyed so much the pool after a hot long day in Ubud. The hotel is very close to one of the most beautiful walking path in the rice fields. We were disappointed by the dinner in Mathis Retreat Restaurant, very pricey for the quality of the dish they provide and very small portions, the main course it has the size of a starter, maybe even smaller. For dinner time, the service is very slow and sometimes not very professional: we asked for french fries in 2 different occasions and every time they said they finished, even people around us they were served. Another down point, and shocking for us, they provided used slippers in the room....this is not what you expect from a high ratted hotel.

I loved the place the surroundings where spectacular. The view of the rice terrace amazing The didn’t clean my room daily and they inform me of that only after I asked. Most of the times I asked to clean it they did. And I had problems with water two times, solved but I was notified after the issue, not before But the staff was really nice and made me stay

A true hidden gem. We booked at Mathis after a change of plans brought us to Ubud earlier that planned and it's probably the best decision we made about our trip. Firstly, the location is peaceful and easy enough to get to, a short scooter/taxi north of central Ubud town. It's located looking out onto rice fields and is beautifully designed with a decent swimming room and covered dining area. The bungalow we stayed in was immaculately clean, huge and with elegant interior decor. The food at the restaurant was great quality, cocktails reasonably priced and there's a brilliant selection of activities including a BBQ and acoustic music evening, feeding the ducks (who were an absolute charm to just observe in their duck house and pond) and more. We had a massage at the spa which was also good. And there's a yoga studio at the far end of the first rice field. The price was also very reasonable for the quality, but definitely one of the most stand-out factors was the lovely people hosting us. Every member of staff was so genuinely friendly, welcoming and kind. From the beginning, we just felt very well cared for. They recommended a local temple ceremony happening one night and told us what we needed to wear. We were almost the only westerners there observing a beautiful ceremony including music, dance and costumes which felt like the whole town attended. Magical. We will be recommending Mathis to everyone we talk to about our time in Bali and are very happy to recommend it more generally. Thanks to Bintang and all the staff for a truly memorable and beautiful experience.

Services are really great

The staff at the property was very responsive and very helpful. The property is well maintained and very charming with lovely view over the rice fields. It is located a bit outside the center which is perfect if you are looking to stay in a more quieter environments and there are still plenty of restaurants and cafe near by. Na

Food was very bad. Breakfast not good. We try dinner one time also was bad. And prices are high for food. We went to restaurant Nusa by suka. Food was amazing! And cheaper!!

The bathroom layout was all wrong. A bath tub with shower attachment in the middle with no curtain !!??

The view from the pool, very quiet area and the friendly staff. The building is old and the rooms need updating. It would be nice to have an ironing board in the room or a clothes dryer to hang our wet swimsuits out. The restaurant is nice, but very overpriced.

The rice fields and the restaurant facing them are exceptional. We enjoyed the a la cart breakfast. The staff was kind, welcoming and receptive to our requests. The pool could do with a bit more cleaning: the water had a white/grey hue (I'm not sure if it was from the chlorine) and there were organic remains in the water. The villas share a wall that offers no noise insulation: we could hear the next door guests plug stuff into their socket, conversation, TV, etc. The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a courtain which doesn't cover the whole entryway: little to no privacy when taking a shower. No hand shower head which is a big negative for families with kids.

This place is absolutely beautiful. The yoga classes were excellent, and the photoshoot was such a lovely experience. There’s a deep sense of peace here—I spent Nyepi at the property and it was the perfect setting for it. The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. My room was stunning, with a beautiful bathtub. The restaurant offers a wide variety of options, and everything I tried was delicious. I truly recommend this place!

Got Here food poisening! Staff denied this :( we booked this hotel due to positive reviews about the hotel and food. Cant agree! Outdated hotel and staff not well trained. Was sick for a week after eating in the restaurant, terrible!!!!!

This is a beautiful little retreat away from the craziness of Ubud traffic. Its not a long trip into town maybe about 5mins taxi. Too far to walk. We hired a little scooter so it wasnt a problem for us. Absolutely loved waking up to the rice patties in the morning with the ducks quacking away in their little pond. The breakfast was lovely too. Our room was beautiful and bed super comfy. Would happily stay again. There is a great Swiss restaurant down the road well worth going to and a nice change from the normal Bali food options. Also a massage place not far from it too. We requested at booking for twin beds, to arrive fairly early in the day and advised that they dont have any twin beds available and cant guarantee them as they sent an email confirming this which I didnt get time to read as travelling and many emails came from MATHIS. People request this option for a reason, it was a very uncomfortable 15mins as I absolutely did not want to be sharing a queen bed with my travel companion. We eventually sorted it out and we were upgraded to a beautiful room with sort of twin beds, ultimately we loved our stay.
