Quirky resort. Lots of artsy stuff. But I paid $275 for one night. That didn’t include a bathroom, TV, or phone. Building is very old and historic but not well maintained and the community bathrooms smelled. Not for me.

McMenamins Edgefield is an experience, and we've stayed there a number of times. The rooms, for the most part, are from another era (it used to be the county "poor farm"), but the grounds are spectacular, the heated outdoor pool is stunning at night. The food is somewhat expensive, but my wife and I shared a grilled Ahi appetizer that was outstanding- probably the best I've ever had. It was a hot day (89 degrees) the last day we were there and the Strawberry Basil Crush (with some fancy Vodka) was fabulous. McMenamins is also known for its sturdy home brewed beers. There are several restaurants and numerous places to imbibe (I can think of at least 8) - including some that are almost hidden on the property. It's a mob scene if there is a concert booked (Bob Dylan was playing a couple of days after we left). But on non-concert days you can wander the property, take a dip in the pool and check out the remarkable gardens in relative peace.

We love Edgefield and always enjoy our time in this unique hotel.

McMenamins Edgefield makes for a fantastic getaway, whether for a few nights or just one! The property is absolutely stunning, the staff is super helpful and friendly, the food & drinks (craft beer, wine, cocktails) are top notch, and the soaking pool is amazing and SO relaxing! There's so much to do and see while on the property! It's a fun, quirky place unlike anything else! The only downside is how difficult it is to get a reservation!
- 5/5
Cozy hidden nooks, fabulous gardens, surprise out buildings, comfy porches, and a relaxing soaking pool on a well preserved historical property make this a fun getaway. Fluffy robes provided to use going to and from the pool are a nice touch.
- 5/5
It's not a luxury hotel, but it is interesting! Be forewarned - no TVs in the rooms. Lots to do and see here. Plan to take time to explore all that they offer. There's even a movie theater with the latest movie (we saw the Mandalorian movie!) One thing I would suggest to the management - invest some money in buying new sheets for the beds. Ours had a hole and stains on it. The food at the Black Rabbit restaurant was awesome, as well as the waitress, Shannon!

The beauty of the property just makes you want to keep walking outside. Inside is a travel back in time with history lessons added in. The lazy river pool is the bomb!

This place has so much character and charm. Old buildings with some history but also with a few squeaks in the floor. The wife loves the variety of plants and flowers around the property. Soaking pool is nice. Staff was friendly. So many choices for food around the property.

The pool hall was our favorite place to be. We absolutely enjoyed a night swim in a beautiful pool. I love being able to walk around and check everything out while being able to enjoy a nice cold drink

Some of the staff were amazing, especially at the spa. Needs improvement: mattresses, pillows, bedding, bedroom rugs, room furniture all need updates, are pretty worn. Rug in room is threadbare. Staff seemed irritated when I asked if there was more coffee/creamer (one or both empty each morning at 10/1030am). Need more vegetables and healthy choices on the menu, it was rough on my belly to eat bar food for all meals for 3 days. I also didn't love commentary from waitstaff about ordering a dessert by myself.
- 4/5
If it were my property, I would ask my staff to contain their feelings while on the floor, rather than dissolve my asset with bad vibes. Since this is a downward trend in my experience at this business, I may not return again soon.
- 2/5
The staff is great... lots of things to do... the pool needs skimmed more regularly... the rooms are dirty... no TV..... and almost double the price. Twice the price for half the amenities. One stay will be enough
- 4/5
The location the grounds, the food, history and art tour, the soaking pools, Ruby’s spa were excellent! Gift shop, venues - all good! No lift to the 3rd floor and no assistance offered, the beds were uncomfortable and room was cold :( I would also have preferred an en-suite; room 320 we stayed in had a room that looked to be largely unused and could be converted.

Food was great and the soaking pool was awesome ! The little bar at the soaking pool has great tea selections!

The hot pool the best. It was a little noisy at night because the building is old and does not have good insulation.. the room temperature was perfect. The view from my room was calming and beautiful.

The room was cute. I had good meals and libations at the tavern. I had a facial at the spa which I didn't enjoy.

Honestly not having a bathroom in your room was like staying at a strangers home. You wake up in the middle of the night to pee and have to get dressed. leave your room, walk down a long hallway hoping not to see anyone. There is no television, just a bed a table and a lamp. Then if you want a shower in the morning you’re taking it in a dirty shower used by who knows was in there last. I was so ready to leave in the morning.

I wanted to share a brief concern after my recent visit to Edgefield, a place I’ve long enjoyed and associated with special memories. During this visit, I noticed a mural near the first-floor men’s laboratory area that felt spiritually and politically divisive to me. I understand the murals reflect historical themes, but the way certain subjects are interpreted can impact whether guests feel broadly welcomed or not. I’m sharing this respectfully because I’ve valued Edgefield over the years and hope it continues to feel like an inclusive, comfortable space for many perspectives. Thank you for taking the time to consider this feedback.

This place sucks paper thin walls heard everything that was going on in the entire building

Pretty much everything. The soaking pool, fantastic food, room was excellent, had a great, quiet nights sleep. Enjoyed Lucky’s. The wine tasting was wonderful, wanted to head back for live music, but so much to do and enjoy. Staff was nice and helpful. Could not have had a better time celebrating my 77th birthday.

absolutely wonderful staff and property and and amenities. I will definitely stay here again. I stayed in the women’s hostel. The soaking pool is delightful. I had a great time at the Halloween dance, and then I soaked in the big clawfoot bath in the shared bathrooms.

Always amazing every time! Got to explore a couple of places we’ve never visited before. Jerry’s Ice House and the Little Red Shed.
- 5/5
This is my first stay in Portland Area and my first time staying in a Hostel. This place is utterly beautiful and the staff was very friendly. I was slightly hesitant to try the hostel because it was my first time. It was perfectly fine. I would say it's a slight adjustment to your morning bathroom routine so bring a bag and pack it up with things you need the night before so you are not fumbling in the dark trying not to wake up others. Other guests were respectful and the pool is awesome. Definitely going back if in the area again.
- 5/5
I loved wine tasting in the winery, the pool hall bar was nice but the best part was the soaking pool.
- 5/5
The front desk staff was the best we've ever encountered
- 1/5
We didn’t like the fact that just because it’s an old historic hotel it doesn’t mean that it didn’t have to be thoroughly cleaned. The bathrooms were disgusting, worse than at truck stop, lots of mold, grime, nothing was wiped down. The rooms were very dusty and floors were not clean. Everything looked run down, the robes were all stained. At least replace the towels and robes. The towels were very hard and not fluffy. Just beaches it’s a historic hotel it you guys charge so much money for a nightly stay with no clean amenities and basic comfort. This isn’t ok. The pool wasn’t clean either btw
- 1/5
Expedia is full of issshh! False advertisement the room was shared with bunk beds. I didn't even stay there!
- 5/5
This was a great place to stay. We enjoyed walking around the grounds and soaking in the pool. We will be back!
- 5/5
A must
- 1/5
No AC. Charged extra hidden “taxes” after checking out. These need to be upfront. I would’ve chosen another hotel with a bathroom if I knew.
- 4/5
So much to see on this property. The spa area is amazing. It is a bit noisy, but perhaps that’s because they were getting ready for a big concert, and some young people who were having a get together outside our window at midnight.

Great place to stay! Highly recommended
- 5/5
An awesome place to stay with lots of options for food, drink, and fun! Only thing was during the heat wave, there's no AC so one small fan per room was provided. Luckily at night with the window open, there was colder air.
- 4/5
The onlything I didn’t like but my fault was not knowing the soaking pool was so hot on a 90degree weather but it was fun despite the hot day
- 2/5
We stayed two nights in the heat of the summer. No A/C in rooms, hallways or bathrooms which makes for two uncomfortable nights in 95 degree heat. We opened the window (no screen), but because the bar stays open so late and the entire hotel is a tourist trap hangout, people drink on the porch outside our window until well past midnight. While we don't mind a shared bathroom, we made the assumption that they would be updated, or at least clean and ventilated. The showers weren't cleaned for the three days we were there - and we only know this because someone else left their soap and nobody came to clean it up. While walking mid-morning in PJs to take a shower in the shared restroom, you have to maze your way through art tours, as groups of people are gathered together to hear about the history of the property and the art. Very uncomfortable experience for folks staying as a hotel guest. To top it off, various people roam through the halls looking for secret rooms or interesting art and more times than we can count, our door handle was juggled in hopes that someone would happen upon a secret/surprise. This happened multiple times to us for both our internal door, and an external door that led to a porch and was barely held locked by a simple chain. Seems it is time for McMenamins to decide whether they want this property to be a tourist trap or an actual hotel, because it isn't working as both.
- 5/5
Wonderful place to stay!! Will be going back when in the area.
- 4/5
Me and my girlfriend had a great time!
- 2/5
The property, room were fine, food and restaurant good service and food. My big issue was I was charged $256.00 at check in then $206.00 at check out now over 3 days several calls and I am still out $462 for one nights stay. I was not ok being charged an additional $206 the next morning and told that to the front desk. I have complained to no avail. I had to cancel my trip as I could not afford a hotel with that much on my card. Basically you need to figure that you need $500 to stay the night for 2 people one bed bath down the hall
- 5/5
Had an unplanned layover in Portland while getting repair work done on my Sprinter Van. An employee at Outside Van recommended McMenamins Edgefield and really glad I chose this place. Unique lodging experience and fabulous dinner and breakfast at the pub and restaurant in the main lodge. Much better than staying at a chain hotel! Would have liked to take advantage of the billiards, but didn’t have anyone to play with. Would definitely stay here again if I’m in the Portland area!
- 4/5
The community bathrooms on the third floor were not cleaned in a timely manner. They were dirty when we returned from the soaking pool in the evening and still had the same problems when we went to use them the following morning.

Es nuestro lugar favorito, siempre que venimos a Portland, al me os una noche nos quedamos y disfrutamos del lucar, el soak pool, el shuffle board, las bebidas, la pizza y postres. El ambiente es unico.

I would like to express my concerns regarding my recent stay. Firstly, the bed in my room was quite hard, which affected my comfort during the night. Additionally, I was awakened at 6 AM by a loud noise from a company cleaning the grease traps in the restaurant. This disturbance was quite disruptive, especially since I had expected a more peaceful environment during my stay. When I brought this issue to the attention of the front desk staff, I received an apology, but it did not resolve my frustration. I believe it is essential for a hotel to adhere to its stated quiet hours, especially when guests are paying for a relaxing experience. Therefore, I would like to request a refund for the inconvenience I encountered. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

We love McMenamins hotels

Such a cool unique property! Lots of walkable paths to different parts of the estate with various venues. Beautiful location!

The salt water pool was lovely, art was so fun, property was beautiful, food/staff/housekeeping was beyond our expectations. We will be back, in fact already booked next visit. Reasonably priced as well! 5 star all around.

Great stay. Wonderful hotel. Good wines.

What a wonderful way to wind down at the end of my business work days in the warm soaking pool, never was full or kid splashing, bar close so relax, lay back and enjoy. After great food and service. I say one evening at the bar in the Power Station and watched in AMAZEMENT the skillful order monitoring of food servers and handling all the food orders, was so entertaining and I wanted to applause when orders were juggled, was such fun. Sorry the hotels.com site would not upload my photos.

- 5/5
Such a great place to stay.
- 5/5
Always a great time here! Bar hopping, eating, and soaking, and golfing!
- 4/5
Just a quick trip to Portland for an appointment. This is an interesting place with a lot of history to it. I always feel like I need to dust at McMenamins since there decor is so dim. The property is well maintained and I’m sorry I’ll miss the gardens in bloom. However I would not stay here in the spring or summer because of the traffic noise. Really really loud. The spa is lovely, make sure to make reservations in advance. Food is the same as every other McMenamins.
- 5/5
The Fridge in the room was very tiny, room temperature, and very difficult to open and close.
- 5/5
Great evening full of food, yummy drinks, hanging out near the fire, and soaking in the pool on a Monday night in the late fall. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
The only negative was the pillow. Too flat and flimsy. Everything else was perfect. Fire pits were tiasty on a cold night, the soaking pool was amazing. Sadly, i wasn't there on any days Jerry's Ice House was open. I am a Deadhead!

I stay here every year when I come out for work. Interesting environment, excellent food and drink, great people.

Great spot highly recommended

The landscaping and gardens are a gardener’s delight. We took several walks to many different gardens. Ancient climbing hydrangeas on the front of the lodge are gorgeous. The salt water pool is a perfect place to relax. I did see some areas that need maintenance and paint, and the need for deep cleaning in the communal shower area and the sleeping rooms. There was a lot of traffic that made walking from place to place a bit dangerous and clear markings for pathways are either non existent or covered by shrubbery. It is clear that the concert venue is a driving focus although on the days we were there it was pretty chill. Great bar and food, fun gift shop and staff were there to be sure we had everything we needed. I hope to return for another stay.
- 5/5
Love dipping in the soaking pool.

Fantastic for a couples weekend.

The bathrooms are at the end of the hall in a lounge with three separate private shower/sink/toilet rooms (at least on the floor I stayed on). With the amount of times I use the bathroom at night, and with how much I drank while I was there, having to leave my room and walk down to the bathroom was a little hard to manage, but I would just stay in a room closer to them next time. The only food we had was in a bar without a real kitchen, but we were a few drinks in by then and didn't really mind the fact that our nachos were cold. The drinks were delicious, and we had several of them. The soaking tub was my (and I'm sure everyone's) favorite part. It was nice and warm and there was plenty of space to spread out and have a little privacy. There is a bar at. The grotto pool and also a water station and bathrooms, so you could really hang out there for hours if you wanted to. It was a great stay, and I wish we had done the room service breakfast the next morning that you put your order out the night before for. Also I recommend putting your do not disturb sign up, because housekeeping came in at 8 and woke us up.

Had never stayed at a hostel. They provided a locker and the bunk beds had a curtain around them. It was quiet and safe.

This visit was so much fun for my wife and me. It was the perfect getaway. The only speedbump was that the heat (boiler) went down in the evening, and despite best efforts to get it back up and running, it took some time and left guestrooms on the first floor pretty cold. They did comp $50 for the inconvenience.

The soaking pool is amazing, unfortunately one of the heaters was broke, so it wasn’t hot. Black Rabbit restaurant is very good! Winery is nice. The Fat Tuesday party could have been better prepared with some better decorations.

My only criticism was that the men’s hostel room could not have been hotter! One window with just a couple of fans lead to a very uncomfortable night’s sleep. I’d still like to return but it’ll have to been at a cooler time of the year.
