Reviews
The hotel is generally viewed as old and run down, but it is praised for its convenient location and friendly staff. The price is also considered reasonable by many guests.
- Convenient location
- Friendly staff
- Old and run down property
- No refrigerator in the room

My stay was excellant-no concerns about the room, staff or anemities. The staff was good. Overall place was clean…..a little dated, but my room was clean and in excellent shape. The maid service was very good. I guess I was a little disappointed. I didn’t have a mini fridge for a room that was $80 a night and then using the stairwell it smelt like urine-if I need to mention anything that was a minor concern- not hard complaints and the area was very nice but it did seem like there was some people living around there that were struggling. God bless them all.
- 4/5
I was very surprised about how nice the place was because from the outside it didn't look the best. The rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable. They had a pool and that was great surprise for the kiddos we had with us. The staff were very nice and helpful towards us. I would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Breakfast was lacking. Staff were great and the hotel , old but clean
- 5/5
Front desk was friendly and welcoming! Room wasn’t fancy, but very clean and comfortable. The location was perfect for our stay, easy walk downtown
- 4/5
The shower could have been cleaner. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
- 3/5
Staff was great when. Bed sheets were dirty. Instead of them offering me another room they gave me sheets to change them. Pool was not working. Dogs kept barking
- 4/5
Add refrigerator and microwave Make sure appliances (ex - hairdryers) work and irons and lights … etc
- 4/5
Close to my event You could tell the hotel is pet friendly
- 1/5
Everything it was nasty. Everything you touched was sticky dirt all over the place roach traps where you can see them behind the beds just pretty bad.
- 5/5
It was ok just a quick stop for the night traveling south
- 3/5
the staff was friendly and accommodating. the breakfast was just ok. the cord of the hair dryer was dirty and there was still black curly hair attached to it and the area behind the sink by the mirror was dirty. there was also a semi alive bee on the floor being covered by another insect of sorts....not pleasant.
- 2/5
hotel appeared old and a little out dated. no real breakfast. room supplies and amenities were lacking
- 2/5
Location The entire hotel l. What was offered online not What was in rooms. Some staff members was very rude and racial.
- 3.5/5
The facility is definitely aging and it shows. The rooms were clean but they definitely need an update. If the owner put some $ into the facility the reviews would definitely go WAY up.
- 2/5
I’ll start with the 1 positive: the motel is close to downtown and the surrounding area is very walkable and newly redeveloped. We walked to a couple meals and really enjoyed them. HOWEVER… this was one of the filthiest, most dilapidated properties we’ve ever allowed ourselves to stay in. From the driveunder to the entryway to the front desk to the elevator to the hallways to the door, we became increasingly depressed that we’d be stuck here for the next 2 nights. The room at first looked ok - like someone had painted 1 accent wall bright orange and called it a day. The photos tell the rest of the story better. The staff was dismissive if not downright rude, like we were just an interruption to their Facebook or video game experience. SAVE YOURSELF - DON’T STAY HERE. Better yet, check with the Health Department first. We wish we had!
- 4/5
We stayed in an array of hotels during our week of travel. This stay was our last one on the trip and it was a relief. The sheets on the beds had a very strong chlorine smell, but that gave us confidence they were clean and disinfected. The heating unit smelled of burning dust (and possibly more). The bathroom area was clean. The price is a little high, especially with the breakfast options being somewhat skimpy (nk protein). Staff was friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Very comfortable bed, linens. Pillows. The staff was very gracious and accommodating. The location was perfect. This was exactly what we needed. We will definitely be back!
- 4/5
I liked the bananas and coffee. I prefer a hot breakfast. A light in the bathroom was out. The toilet was too low and didn't want to flush. The dresser was broken and had seen better days.
- 4/5
We were a tad nervous about this stay but the price was right, the location fit, and the reviews were good. Turns out the reviews were spot on. This is an older motel with room doors facing outside. The property is older and the building shows its age in small ways…small elevator, small doors, room size and layout are dated. Beyond that, the room was spotless. Everything worked. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom, while small, was clean and had been updated recently. Staff was very friendly and breakfast was good. Great stay on our way South.
- 4/5
Great location, clean room, friendly staff, very good price, spacious and comfortable room .
- 3/5
The room was large compared with rooms in newer hotels. The bed was comfortable. Staff were kind. Other guests looked like regular working class people. The building is run down, looks more like a motel. The shower curtain was too old. On the plus side, parking is just outside the main entrance - easy in and out. Experience matched the price I paid (less than $100 per night.)
- 5/5
Staff at front desk was very helpful and informative. The morning breakfast was good. The hotel location was easy to find. The pricing for the room was acceptable.
- 5/5
Staff was polite rooms clean parking was great breakfast was ok I would stay here again
- 4/5
Police search of car in parking lot ☹️
- 4/5
Dennis is very pleasant!! Noisy neighbors next door
- 4/5
easy to find
- 2.5/5
The breakfast was terrible, all bread frozen waffles in with dry bread so they were soggy ! Need some hot options room was big enough to accommodate ! Breakfast , for sure
- 5/5
Conveniently located in walking distance of everything in town
- 4/5
Hotel had a slightly “tired” vibe, but I would dtay again.
- 0.5/5
Location was the only good part about it Staff was rude, room was very dirty. I paid for 2 nights and ended up leaving 15 minutes after checking in due to it being so nasty and dirty
- 5/5
My room was super clean and
- 3.5/5
I liked the location. The front desk lady a large black woman was very rude. She was not at all friendly or helpful. I wish I'd asked her name to call corporate. A maintenance man helped us when keys didn't work .she ignored us. Breakfast bar was clean and good.thank u
- 4/5
Loved the rooms, the staff was very friendly. The location was great, downtown exactly where i wanted to be with plenty of parking. The out side stair well was sappose to remain locked, and use your key card to get in. During the day it was locked, I found at night was proped open- most likely because it made a loud noise when it slammed shut. When I got up in the morning I noticed 2 men weaving in and out of the cars, when I came downstairs the quickly walked over to the bus stop.
- 3/5
The property parking lot was part of other stores and food businesses.
- 2.5/5
The room was very outdated. The bathroom was horrible and the room needed a deep clean
- 5/5
Clean room
- 5/5
The bed was very very comfortable was the best sleep we had. Very quiet too. The shower was great nice warm water and a very nice stream of force. We missed the breakfast cuz we slept late. If in area again, we would definitely stay at this hotel.
- 4/5
The property was just a short walk out of town. The room was large, clean, and comfortable. Several food choices across the courtyard. Continental breakfast was basic.
- 5/5
Very nice and friendly staff and great location to good food and downtown.
- 5/5
Very good breakfast.
- 4/5
Our room had no fridge or microwave. Didn't need the microwave but fridge would have been nice.
- 4/5
Clean room, staff friendly, parking good breakfast did not eat breakfast.
- 3/5
acceptable room and breakfast. Simple but good. The room had a weird smell/odor in both rooms that were booked. We kept the door open for an hour each time we came back to the room.
- 5/5
Plenty of parking, staff was friendly, the room was spotless.
- 5/5
The quality and the price are well matched. Clean and comfortable stay.
- 4/5
Good value for the money
- 2.5/5
For a non-smoking room, it smelled like nothing but smoke. Area was a little sketchy.
- 4/5
Clean room and great staff! Lots of good shps and food options nearby!
- 5/5
For the price it was fine. However, it is a little tired and worn-down looking.
- 1/5
Excellent time here. Only complaint maid service did not come. We had to get our own fresh towels.
- 4/5
Walking distance from downtown
- 3/5
Room was clean, bed was good, just needed a place to stay over night. Met our needs for the price.
- 1/5
The room we were given was disgusting! I asked to be moved and it was slightly better
- 2/5
Beds are worn out, pillows are horrible. Loud area till about 12-1 then gets better.
- 5/5
Great stay. Comfortable bed and pillow. FYI for the continental breakfast goers - breakfast did not have the waffles machines despite the pictures showing that it did.
- 1/5
Try being a little nicer to the guest!
- 2/5
Lady at the front desk was not hospitable!
- 5/5
Clean room, amazing price, friendly staff.
- 5/5
Always a good stay
- 5/5
Bathroom was not good but decent.
- 1/5
The lady at the front desk was awesome but the room was terrible it was dirty only one light had a bulb in it the bedspreads were so nasty i didnt want to put my suit case down 3 rooms from ours had a junkie tweeking in it with the door of his room looking like he had just kicked it in i would not recommend we didnt stay we checked out and went to another hotel
- 5/5
It’s always a good stay
- 2/5
My room was nasty it had crim on the floor then now priest saying there did a extroxcist on me and I didn't know anything about it. So my stay was bad and not good .
- 3/5
Price for one night stay was reasonable but nothing fancy just basic accommodation
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
It's great
- 5/5
Ok
- 2/5
Check in went smoothly. Once we got to the room we observed large wads of hair on floor bedding covered in long black hair sheets wrinkled and not clean. Went back to reception was assigned to a new room which was a slight downgrade no refrigerator or microwave however room appeared clean. Very loud overnight parking lot did not feel safe very shady characters walking around in and out of hotel lobby
- 5/5
👍
- 1/5
Was locked out of my room by front desk, they couldn't explain why. Shower water was like warm. My non-smoking room smelled like THC smoke. Room was in poor shape. Staff not friendly.
- 5/5
👍
- 4/5
A late check in saved me. The room was spacious and had a fun 60s feel.
- 5/5
It wasn’t spotless. But the one person I talk to there every time I stay there makes up for that.
- 5/5
good experience easy everything no problems
- 1/5
Dirty
- 1/5
Nasty dirty bathroom! It apparently had not been cleaned for a long time. We wiped the floor with a cloth and it came away black. Hair in shower/tub. No plug in tub. Mirror covered in fingerprints. Disinterested check in staff. Broken drawers in dresser. Should have been put to the curb. Check out staff however was very pleasant and friendly. Won’t stay here again Wyndham should be ashamed to call this property theirs.

- 4/5
The room was nice, it was clean. Each staff member was friendly.
- 4/5
staff was very nice and helpful. Dated but good for the price and location.
- 4/5
Room was clean, some staff were friendly, and the location is great!
- 5/5
I always stay here when visiting family in Staunton. The main reason? Because of the service!! They are so nice and accommodating! Yes, it is older and dated a bit, but they recently gave the place a fresh paint job and are doing their best. Thank you
- 5/5
The stay was pleasant. Room clean and roomy. Staff very efficient. Property could use some updating - but stay went very well.
- 3/5
Needs updated, bed great, loved the bathroom mirror,
- 5/5
Front desk people were very helpful
- 3/5
Parking was easy and basically in downtown so didnt have to drive but a minute to ride the train and some nice places to eat
- 4/5
Meh
- 4/5
Safe and healthy
- 5/5
the water was hot enough to take a shower
- 1/5
The first room we were in was 301. Went to go to bed and a wet spot came up from under the sheet. Smelled like urine. I have pictures. Pulled the sheet off and the bed pad had a large urine spot and smell on the bed pad. The pad also had several other stains. Very nice front desk staff took me to another room to preview all looked ok. Turns out that room didn’t have hot water. When checking out I mentioned the hot water issue and was told it takes a while to warm up. I had let it run for 20 minutes without any hot water coming in. Breakfast items were stored on the floor of a utility closet off of the lobby. (Was left wide open for patrons to see). After laying in someone else’s urine the first day I wasn’t eating breakfast there anyway.
- 5/5
Love the breakfast and very quiet
- 4/5
Although the outside could use some paint, we were very happy that the rooms were clean and fresh. They came in each morning to make beds. The hotel is in walking distance to downtown! Also has a great Mexican food place across the parking lot. Dollar General a few blocks away for anything you might need. The breakfast is a bit sad with no eggs or sausage. But, there are some great mom and pop breakfast places in a few minutes drive. Loved the area. Well worth the money. We also went with another couple and had adjacent rooms. Staff was very nice. Parking is right there in front of hotel.
- 4/5
I was pleased for the price, however the breakfast I did not eat because gnats were crawling on the food
- 5/5
good location
- 2/5
The room was very old fashioned, it was also dusty, there was dust on the pillows on the bed and the table tops. The staff was nice. There was mold around the rag rail in the bath tub. Overall it was not the best experience but that is what we get for waiting until last min to book.
- 4/5
Good for a quick overnight on our way home. Breakfast-not so much. Definitely not what we have had in other hotels.
- 2/5
This 1962 property is run down, dirty and basically the only thing going for it is free parking and close to downtown. The pool is there covered up and unavailable, I would never stay there again.
- 5/5
Meh
- 3/5
There were dirty sheets in th room. So thychamne on
- 5/5
It’s not as bad as people think. The rooms are clean.
- 3/5
The place was in a good place.no place to get drinks unless you go to a restaurant. The bathroom needs a paint job.
- 4/5
The room was great & clean. Only thing missing was a mini refrigerator.
- 3/5
Our room was clean and in good condition. Looks like the rooms were updated but the elevator and hallways needed painting. The breakfast room was clean with a mediocre continental breakfast.
- 1/5
Dead bug and food on the floor, debris on the bathroom floor, tables sticky and crumbs all over. Just disgusting.
- 5/5
This Ho-Jo is run by a family of hard-working, pleasant, and friendly-in-the-elevator folks- I’m going to say this applies to 90% of the family - I’ve stayed here multiple times as my 96 year old Dad lives in Staunton- love, love, love this beautiful little town by the way- I highly recommend this Ho-Jo as a clean, quiet, comfortable place to stay- it doesn’t feel commercial and corporate > feels like family - and it’s MUCH cheaper than all other places in Staunton- an excellent value- don’t be an orange hater 😉
- 5/5
Stars appropriate for this hotel and price point, anyone looking for fancier lodging while in town have other options. I asked for a fridge and was able to get a room facing the town with a fridge.
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
Great stay at an affordable price.
- 5/5
The service is polite, the pool is clean, they are kind, all the people that work there are great!
- 2/5
Just dirty. Dirty everything.
- 5/5
The room was surprisingly clean for the price. The outside could use a facelift, but for 80 some bucks a night you can’t beat it.
- 1/5
The room was dirty and smelled like smoke really bad. Chairs had stains on them. They didn’t have another room to put us in so the said they would give us a refund and to have y’all call the hotel so y’all can cancel the order. We left and stayed at the red roof inn that night.
- 5/5
Good
- 1/5
Hair dryer didn’t work, dog urine in the elevator, TV was so small and coffee pot was disgustingly. NEVER AGAIN!
- 2/5
Staff was very nice, but condition of hotel was poor, old, beat-up, and dirty. Definitely not what you would expect from an Howard Johnson. One of the towels had what appeared to be dried blood on it. Pillow case had clearly not been changed from last occupant, and condition of room overall was poor and very dirty.
- 5/5
One night travel stay. Clean room and courteous staff.
- 2/5
We didn’t have high expectations for the price but it didn’t meet them. This place seems to attract long term low cost stays which made it feel a bit like a housing project. There were some possibly intoxicated guys trying to get a room at check in making a bit of an uncomfortable scene at the front door which felt unsafe with my small children. Everything is very run down with stained carpets and dirty walls. We almost didn’t stay but had very limited options.
- 5/5
A great area to look around.
- 5/5
Great property
- 2/5
I felt a bait and switch was definitely pulled. The room was so dirty that we had to buy bathrdosif
- 5/5
There is a trolley ride around town, which the kids love. Historic downtown is within walking distance, with lots of restaurants and activities to do.
- 5/5
Very satisfied, served the purpose. Thank you
- 1/5
Hotel is in bad shape. Elevator was sticky. Room smelled, had smokers in it. Did not feel safe in that particular area. Homeless / shady people there. Then a domestic dispute near us, screaming at 5:15 am. Police were called. I wouldn’t even post this on your website as an option.

It’s what you get for the price you pay
- 4/5
Cons: The exterior of the hotel is aged and gives the impression that the rooms would be likewise but fortunately the rooms are brighly colorful and clean. The people walking int he immediate area can seem suspect......as in a bit "rough" looking or "off" due to alcohol or substance use, hence at times it can seem slightly sketchy. If you need a cheap hotel, clean, convenient to nice places to eat and coffee shops.....book it

This was a decent overnight stop while I was on the road. The room was clean and well-kept. Comfortable bed, friendly service, good price. Would recommend!
- 5/5
I room was real nice and clean. The desk personnel where very friendly. I locked myself out of the room and the help gave me a new card with big smiles and friendliness.

The property is set in a beautiful location.

Okay
- 3/5
The property is old and it looks like they have tried to cover some of its sore spots. I don't mind that as much, but when I find hairs on the bathroom floor, in the bathtub, and even one in the bed, that's not good. There was also somekind of purple stain on one of the sheets and one of the towels had a red stain on it as well. The continental breakfast was sparse. The staff was overall friendly, but when I asked for something, I did feel I was kinda getting a look like i was asking too much. I just asked about the pool and for an extra towel. The stay was quiet and trouble free as far as checking in.
- 5/5
Staff was excellent and friendly would highly recommend.
- 5/5
Comfortable
- 3/5
The rooms were clean but had an offensive odor. We were offered another room, but it also had the same odor. There was also mold on the bathroom ceiling.
- 5/5
Everyone was helpful

Staff was very friendly. Check in process was easy

Everything's was good👍

Clean room, good location, reasonable price. For me that’s perfect.
- 4/5
Walking distance to downtown is good
- 1/5
The room was the dirty. Bed sheets were wrinkled and stains. The water in the bathtub was running brown. Not a good experience!
- 5/5
Excellent service
- 2/5
One can imagine that the incredibly low cost likely meant compromises had to be made in terms of quality.

The location is great for walking to downtown Staunton. The bed was comfortable and the room layout good. It was a nonsmoking room and it reeked of stale cigarette smoke.
- 4/5
Good value for the money. Friendly staff. Very convenient location. Room was very comfortable and clean. Great customer service.
- 4/5
Nice value. Room was comfy and clean. Staff was nice. Even the other guests were friendly.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, newly remodeled rooms, decent breakfast, no waffle maker though. would have been nice to have a fridge and microwave in the room, but for a one night stay it was all good. Would stay there again.
- 3/5
The Hotel is comfortable, staff were nice. Important drawback they have no functioning rooms for people who need handrails to use the very low toilets in the bathrooms.
- 2/5
I would not spend money to stay there again.
- 4/5
The hotel was decent, clean, quiet, and a convenient location to walk around the town. Staff was helpful and friendly.
- 5/5
It is fine as an on the road one night stop.
- 4/5
Nice inside room (refurbished) but under par on the outside. Quiet. No fridge. Nice folks. Breakfast very minimal but sufficient.
- 4/5
Parking lot not well maintained after snow and ice. Made for easy falls.
- 5/5
Very good value for the money.
- 5/5
People that work there are really nice and really friendly
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay. Older vibe and building. The price was great. No problems
- 4/5
This place is a great deal. It looks to be family owned, so the furnishings and linens are a bit worn, but besides that, everything was very comfortable! It was chilly outside and the heat was working fine! I had to do some work on the computer and the wifi worked fine. I mean, at $45 per night, I was extremely happy
- 4/5
Nothing special.
- 2/5
Too far from the Interstate No sign on the Interstate for the hotel Old, dirty and dingy Would never recommend or return Surprised you would recommend it
- 1/5
Dirty snd smelly. Human hair everywhere in the bathroom.
- 4/5
In addition, there is no effective way to get fresh air to keep good indoor air quality.
- 5/5
Always do good business with me
- 4/5
They have always treated me well
- 4/5
The property is a bit dated. The staff is very nice and friendly.
- 2/5
The room was only superficially clean. There were chips behind the nightstand and a pill bisible just under the dresser. The worst problem was the bugs. One type mostly in the barhroom; another large bug crawled across by laptop screen. I think it might have been a termite.
- 3/5
Lots to see around the hotel.

Whenever my husband and I are passing through Staunton on a longer trip, we always stay here. The property is a bit run down, but our room has always been clean. The king bed was very comfortable and it's very quiet at night. Everything is walkable from this location and there's tons of parking available for free. Staff was somewhat friendly, and I was disappointed that they didn't honor my room request for a top floor room. The room they gave us was fine, but we always enjoy staying on the top floor. Other than that, we'll continue to stay here for a one night stay.
- 2/5
We had a non smoking room that was a definite smoking room for the last 40 years. It was dated and needs a renovation.
- 5/5
Property was peaceful
- 1/5
Disgusting dirty hotel. I do not recommend at all.
- 4/5
Exceeded my expectations! Clean, great location and price. Only negative is the train whistle around midnight woke me up, but overall a great deal downtown. Loved the large and convenient parking too!
- 3/5
Mattress was comfortable
- 2/5
Key pad on door was dead and Room had not been cleaned prior to arrival (I made a reservation a week in advance) The room was infested with dead cockroaches and living spiders. Not to mention a Maintenance man barged into our room without knocking, as my daughter was getting into the jacuzzi tub. Instead of being reimbursed for my stay, I was only offered a $50 refund off a $215 room!! The owner was very kind however she didn’t seem to understand that this is unacceptable on so many levels. I wouldn’t stay here again even if it was just to sell drugs!
- 5/5
Always stay at this HoJo! We love it. Staff are always extra welcoming
- 1/5
Property was dirty. Staff at front desk was rude. Roaches in bath tub and crawling on ceiling. Never expected this from a Howard Johnson facility. Very disappointed.
- 1/5
The shower head had mold. There was hair along the walls in the bathroom. Overall it was just an unkept place. Will not stay there again.
- 4/5
Excellent location and close to everything
- 5/5
Helpful and kind
- 3/5
The property is perfectly located and close to everything in town. But, is has not been properly maintained, the walls are cracking, the AC units are old and the insulating foam is flaking off and flying into the rooms. The bathroom was dirty, there were spider webs on the walls and door frame and a dirty, stained carpet. The bathroom was the worse, was dirty, the ceiling had a patch that was falling appart, there were 2 used bars of soap resting on the curtin rod and pubic hair all over the bathtub. The cleaning crew has to do a better job. More than likely won't be staying here again.
- 2/5
Very outdated. Dirty floors. Water leaked from the shower faucet 24/7. Saw dead crickets and such on the floor in the corners of the room. Elevator is so small and slow. I would never come here again.
- 5/5
Older quiet motel, good rates and pet friendly!
