Reviews
The hotel receives mixed reviews with guests appreciating its proximity to downtown and friendly staff, but expressing concerns about cleanliness, noise, and outdated facilities. Some guests experienced issues with the air conditioning and parking fees were unexpected for some.
- Close proximity to downtown and walking distance to many amenities
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Cleanliness issues reported by several guests
- Noise from the street and surrounding area disturbing sleep

Staff was very nice and it was great to have parking so close. The street noise was very loud so bring earplugs!

The staff is very kind and helpful. I check in very late and she willingly to help me check in at midnight and she also keeping my pre-sent packages as well

Didn’t do breakfast but staff was very friendly & attentive. Parking was great & convenient, perfect location in downtown & close to college

Check in is at 3PM. Well when I got there they gave me my card and it took me like 30 minutes to gather my family stuff and head to the room. My room was not ready at all. We had to wait outside the room in the hallway for 20 minutes till they were done cleaning. I thought I would get a discount or something 😂. Nope nothing

Location, cleanliness 1.Deposit taken should be refunded during check out only. I am yet to receive it. 2. There was no response to my mail sent to property.
- 2/5
The soap was used and repackaged. Shower curtain has never been washed and clearly stained. Smells horrible. Pictures are deceiving, they make the hotel look good.
- 1/5
The soap in my bathroom was used (there were human hairs on the boxed bar soap) and the other single use bottles were all different levels of partially full. The shower had the prior guests personal items still on the shower caddy.

Staff was helpful and friendly. Parking is convenient. Location is very good downtown. The room was clean. Breakfast wasn't the best, but was okay. The main issue is that the air conditioner in the room was noisy. Even the portable unit which was supposed to be quieter was still loud. But you can't beat the location in the downtown. It also has some charm as an older building.

Lots of homeless on sidewalk. They sleep there overnight. Lot of street noise. Strange portable ac heater in room
- 3/5
Overall it’s an older hotel with charm but some of these things did not create a good impression. We got to our room late and when we noticed the issues we were too tired to ask to be moved so I did not repot these concerns.
- 3/5
Also the $100 credit hold at check in was not disclosed when I checked in at all. The seemed more concerned about charging extra for parking than informing me of the hold placed on my card. The room was decent. Small, but for the price and location it was ok. They can do better at disclosing all charges involved in staying.

Snacks in room were fairly priced, a first in hotel history. Lots of homeless on sidewalk. They sleep there overnight. Lot of street noise. Strange portable ac heater in room

Friendly staff, great location for restaurants and walking around.
- 5/5
Parking was cheap and easy, staff was very helpful and friendly, the room was good and bed comfortable, sheets clean. Room for improvement: found used lotion bottle under bed skirt, a hair in the shower but everything seemed to have been cleaned well otherwise.

We stayed at this hotel because it was close to the SAP center, which it is-easy walking distance. You get what you pay for. In our case that did NOT include hot water for our morning showers. The manger stated that the problem was "just on our floor" and would be fixed soon. We left, very disappointed.

Pretty run down since our last stay a few years ago. A few left over hairs in the bathroom. Fridge and air super loud. Overall ok for a one nighter.

The inside of the building and our room were clean, orderly, and well stocked. The bathroom products were good quality. Obviously, the owners put a lot of work and some money in renovating. Our room was a little small because of the king-sized bed, but it was comfortable, and we liked the pillows. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were within walking distance of good restaurants and of our event. Also, we felt our car was safe because there is a staff on-site until it closes and the high chainlink fence is locked. The breakfast was simple but had some good choices, and there was a morning newspapers to read. Since we spent Saturday night, there was a lot of noise and cruisers; although, we enjoyed seeing the vintage cars. Also, the outside of the building is old and upon approach, it made us wonder if it would be a good place, but we were pleasantly surprised when we entered the building and greeted by the friendly, efficient staff. We would book a room there again if we have another downtown event.

Reminds me of staying in old hotel in Europe, everything is clean but minimal and out of date. Safe didn’t work in room, they reported is was because battery dead in it. They didn’t replace them but asked later if I wanted them fixed. One of the treadmills elevation didn’t work. The breakfast was pitiful, cheap and something I would see in cheap hotel in China. And the desk chair was unusable for more than 15 minutes, no padding left and felt like I was going to fall through any second. And no usb port’s in room, but had usb plug a front desk I could borrow

This is a noisy location. There was a music festival going on, but even after that wrapped up by 11PM, heavy equipment disassembling the stage venue continued all night. Worse than that, the city folk racing their loud engines as they passed the hotel made for a miserable night’s sleep.

Location I found 4 big spiders in the room, the hotel sent someone with a broom, but he didn’t kill the spider (my younger son and Me are super afraid to spiders) and the staff didn’t care about it! Then they sent someone again with a “Raid” and all the room was with a toxic odor..even worse. I’ll never come back or recommend this place. And the Front desk staff doesn’t look that understand English.

The breakfast was a nice surprise. Lots of options. The staff was so friendly - that was the best thing about this stay! We will stay here again when visiting San Jose downtown! The blankets were thin, so I do recommend to bring your own blankets - and possibly even your own pillow if you are a picky pillow person. Also, make sure to bring your own hair conditioner, as what they offer is conditioning shampoo and not so great for hair that is long and tangles easily. Also, the downtown nightlife noise is noisy! until about 3am! Be prepared to hear it!

I have never seen worse breakfast than in this hotel. Cheapest hostel in Paris with breakfast option had it much better than Clariana. Entry doors are weird. The front door is closed after 6 pm I think, and the side doors are not that easy to open. Elevator is super slow. Bathrooms are very old.

Place is in a great location but very run down. For the price it was ok and we knew we would only be sleeping there. If we had had more time I would want to stay somewhere nicer. Bring your own toiletries. They are not at all concerned with quality. We skipped the breakfast.

We enjoyed staying here. While it could use a little bit of updating in the rooms it is not anything critical and adds to the charm. The beds are very comfortable and it was clean. Staff was helpful and pleasant. It was located perfectly in San Jose and extremely accessible to all areas from the CalTrain station to the airport. Plus the area around it had great coffee shops and dining options. Would staff again.

The breakfast was okay and the staff were friendly but it was not what I would call the world run establishment. It seemed like there’s nobody was really present. I spent two nights there after the first night. Nobody came to change sheets or put the bed down so I had to make it myself, which is ok but while not expensive, it’s also not a cheap hotel

I want to acknowledge that the staff at Hotel Clariana were very kind, helpful, and informative. Unfortunately, I will not be staying here again. Hotel Clariana is described as a boutique hotel, but that is not accurate. It is quite old and run down, and has more of a feeling of a motel than a boutique hotel. The doors are locked both for entry (which is standard) and for exit (which seemed odd). They really try to make it a nice experience, but little things like no hand soap in the bathroom (just a travel size of body wash), no door on the closet, and old windows that are beautiful but let in a ton of noise make it a less pleasant experience.

Great location. Room itself was just Ok and on the smaller size. The elevator was not working so we had to carry luggage up to the 5th floor via stairs. The shower had used toiletries left by the last guest. The TV did not work at all. The parking is only in and out until midnight, and then the lot is locked. Overall, the stay was just Ok.

Hotel and hotel staff were great at making our stay good and comfortable. The hotel is old but it has a certain charm. However, the city of San Jose and the area around the hotel is unacceptably dirty and full of homeless and drug users. So extremely disappointing of a downtown with an institution of higher learning just blocks away. What is city government doing to keep students safe?

The cleanliness was lacking with hair and dirt on the bathroom floor, and generally, the facilities were pretty outdated. The portable AC made an awful knocking sound when turned off and only when the window was closed. Super weird. Downtown was noisy but expected on a Fri/Sat.

When I went down for breakfast the front desk attendant was stirring the water with a stick. The frozen breakfast (food poisoning alert) was left out with no directions & staff didn’t speak English. At check-in I asked for credit card for incidentals. Turns out the $100 they hold, they are really taking for the $20 parking that’s not mentioned. There is no light above the shower so it’s pretty dark if you get the 2 queens rooms.

The room felt clean and fresh with plenty of amenities. Little decorative touches around the property added to the ambiance of what could have easily looked like a basic Motel 6 if not fir the obvious care of the owners. We were just passing through for the night, but I would definitely stay here again if I were visting the area.

I didn't stay one night at all, sheets had stains, towels had stains, cracks in the support columns. We left after 2 hours of having been checked in, we were afraid of the building collapsing and getting some sort of illness, parking lot was not secure at all. I told the manager that its fine if they charge us for one night but would want a refund for one night and check out, still waiting Everything!!!! Sheets, towels, feeling safe and parking I dont know how they pass inspection, they are certainly paying someone off.

The first one is that the Wi-Fi just didn't work at all in my room, or my floor for that matter. It was perfectly fine in the lobby and gym but not my room. The second and much bigger issue is that my room's safe didn't work. They got someone from maintenance over, but didn't fix it so I had to carry my passport and wallet around all week.

This “boutique” hotel, which we stayed at pre pandemic, needs major updating. The room had central air but we had to use a big box in the corner. When we arrived there was a quarter of a roll of toilet paper and we had to ask for more. The soap, hair products and body lotion are cheap. The TV is ancient and the remote volume did not work. We did not get two waters a day as promised and we had to ask. On Saturday I came back at three pm to do some work and the room had not been made up. Not what we expected

The hotel could use a deep cleaning. The shower curtain was smelly and moldy. The towels did not smell fresh.

Loved this hotel. Parking was easy, lot is next door and gated at night. Room was perfect, shower hot, AC worked amazing, and the most comfortable bed I have slept on in a hotel in a while. Def stay here if you are visiting San Jose.

Staff are new and working the bugs out. Confusion regarding reserve amount (charged 2X) and parking (was told it came with room and then told it did not) but one night was comped. Elevator broke down on second day but staff brought baggage down from fourth floor. Location was good, complimentary breakfast was just okay.

The doors are locked, you have to call to have someone answer. Once they do, they are confused and aggressive. The owner follows you around trying to show you everything. It's seemingly nice, but wildly annoying. Our room was loud until 230am. There is a club right outside.

For the price of the room, you receive fine enough amenities. Wi-fi was not high quality, and the toiletries in the room only allowed for one person to take one shower. Folks complaining about unhoused people outside the property dont seem to understand the nature of the Bay Area and the property is not unique in this. Id stay again

Very good for the price, and it's in a good location. The heater in the room I was in was not very impressive and I couldn't get it 70 in the room. Not super bad but suboptimal. Overall I'd say 3.5 or 4 out of 5

The AC was out in the building. They were aware but did not tell us. We put our things down in the room and check in and figured the AC needed time to cool down the room and we left for dinner and a concert. When we got back to the room at 11:30pm the room was 92 degrees in it. We were asked to move to a room with a portable AC. I asked to move the Ac to our room or for a partial refund as we would be leaving if we had to pack up our things. We were denied a refund and left upset.

The hotel is in a bit of a sketchy area, and everything is pretty old/outdated. The airconditioner is extremely loud, and their was also a lot of street noise that came through. That said the room is spacious if that is what you are optimizing for.

It was right next to the convention center and next to a lot of options for eating or for shopping. It had a few nightclubs and bars

Like the fact that the building is on historical register.

The woman who checked us in was lovely. The location was very close to everything we wanted to do which was fabulous! There are quite a few homeless in the general area, but nothing more than you see in any big city. And the streets were well lit from the San Pedro Market to the hotel. The rooms were very small for the furniture. The one huge negative was the AC. They had put a small portable unit in the corner of the room, but the tube filtering the air to or from the window had fallen off and the heat the unit put out from working made the room hotter instead of cooler. We didn’t figure out the tube until the morning and we couldn’t get it to stay in anyway. Other than the A/C, everything was fine and a good deal for the price. You can tell the hotel used to be very fancy, but it hasn’t been kept up.
- 3/5
The AC did not work, so they provided an oscillating fan, which did not do much to cool off the high 80 deg temperates. We left the window open at night to cool the room down, but there is a lot of street noise. Staff was friendly, but the room conditions were rather poor.
- 3/5
For where it is located, its okay.
- 2/5
This hotel had nice people that worked there only. It is surrounded by homeless people. The air conditioner in the room was loud and couldn’t leave on to sleep. If opening a window was an option, you could hear traffic noise and people all day and night.
- 3/5
Clean, neat, convenient and friendly staff. The area around the hotel is a bit dodgy- did not feel safe at night when walking back to the hotel. But this is a very convenient location and perfectly comfortable hotel
- 3/5
We were greeted and checked in by a very nice woman. The problem was the room. We walked in at it was 85 degrees. The AC was set at 70. Cool air was coming out of the vent but it stayed at the corner of the room. The AC was SO LOUD! Will not go back
- 5/5
The Hotel is lovely, I can appreciate the history. The staff was friendly and hard working. This was a 10 minute easy walk to the San Jose Convention Center. Plenty of amenities. There were A/C issues, however I adjusted to them by closing my drapes during the day.
- 4/5
Older hotel, well-maintained and reasonably comfortable. The manager was on-site and very personable and helpful. Nice breakfast room. A/c was being serviced so the hallways were warm but rooms were fine.
- 2/5
Oh boy I had high hopes but...this place is sad and old and in a really run down part of San Jose. There's very little nearby, hotel needs full renovation and the breakfast was terrible (worst coffee I ever tasted). Saddest of all...it's impossible to call them. The number rings then fails to connect. I left a few things of reasonable value in the room. When I realised and called to check I simply couldn't connect at all so that stuff is lost.
- 3/5
Property was clean but typical downtown area. The AC was out and it was very hot but we we given a fan which made it bearable. Decent restaurants in the area. Manager was very thoughtful considering she had to deal with a hotel with no AC in 98 degree temperstures.
- 5/5
Super clean
- 3/5
The staff was great. The hotel is nicely remodeled. The area has many culinary and entertainment options. The air conditioning went out at about midnight making it uncomfortable in the room and disrupting sleep.
- 5/5
For the room, the pillows and bed were actually comfortable, slept great without a stiff back. It was helpful the room was stocked with extra hand towels and wash clothes. It's always nice when we don't have to call for more towels. The hotel is in a perfect location. We were able to see a comedy show, and bar hop until 2am.

Very nice
- 5/5
Within walking distance of SJ University and court house. The breakfast is more than adequate and I appreciate the refer and micro in the room. There are number of eating places within easy walk distance There is also a grocery store within an easy walk too. There appears to be some homeless folks in the area. There is also secured parking. All in all I will return.
- 1/5
Place is outdated, A/C extremely noisy, even the adjacent rooms are noticeable, parking was closed when we returned from our event and had to call/wait until access was provided. This should be a 1/2 Star place maximum
- 5/5
The hotel and staff were great. The room was very clean and comfortable. The area around the hotel is a bit sketchy but not their fault. City needs to step up and help improve conditions - not unlike any other downtown area in California (San Fran and LA have similar issues).

Its been a horrible experience at this hotel. After numerous months of chatting with Tina, the front desk, she invited us to stay. However , upon checking in , there was major issue with AC Electrical, and zTina was very defensive about it. She changed my room, still same kind of noise the ehole night, we couldnt sleep with this ongoing noise. I stayed at Major brand of hotels , never encountered such noise ever!!. Pls be awre of this before you checin in.

This is one of my usuals, close to San Pedro Square market. Staff was very welcoming and the room was great!
- 3/5
The stay coincided with a very warm day. The A/C unit - in a utility closet within the room - was very loud, even with earplugs. The hotel / room are OK and centrally located, but I will likely look for other accommodations next time.
- 1/5
The only good thing about this hotel is the front desk staff. They are super lovely and helpful. Unfortunately, that does not make up for the rest of the issues. There is an awful smell in the hotel. They use car air fresheners and hang them in the hallways. The bedsheets were dirty and stained. There were bugs on the drapes. The TV doesn’t work properly. And the air conditioning is so incredibly loud, don’t expect to get any sleep. You couldn’t pay me to stay here again.
- 4/5
Excellent front desk service—very attentive. The boutique hotel is unique in downtown. It is a quiet stay near restaurants and landmarks. Centralized location in heart of downtown close to light rail transit service.
- 1/5
The front desk lady took $100 hold against any use from the snacks and we used 1 peanut and one almond for $3 each and I was charged $24, the bed sheets, pillow case and balnket were so dirty and stain all over it, walls had dirty feet marks and the drawer had T-shirt from previous guest which means they didn't doba proper house keeping, carpet was very sticky and the AC was super super loud we had to turn it off cuz it was that loud and I'm not even exaggerating room # 406, me and my wife agreed that this was by far our worst hotel experience ever, I want to be refunded for this horrible reservation and I took lots of pictures if you need a proof. Thank you

Nice renovated old hotel.

The Hotel was nice. It’s downtown San Jose so there are interesting characters walking around! Although they have a gate they close at night, I was concerned about my car safety! The continental breakfast was nothing to write home about. I was disappointed in that!
- 5/5
Perfect for sjsu graduation! Everything within walking distance.
- 3/5
Hotel wasn't bad, a little cramped, bed was stiff, bathroom door didn't latch, only one partial roll of toilet paper was provided initially (had to request more and they only brought one roll at a time). Listing did not say that parking was paid only, so that was an unexpected fee. Overall not bad, likely won't ever stay here again.
- 5/5
This hotel was very cozy and we enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
The receptionist was very polite and helpful. I would stay there again.

Walking distance to SAP Center. Restaurants nearby.
- 2/5
Front desk staff person was great. But the windows are not insulated so the noise from the street (and it’s a busy street) disturbed my sleep. And I had the pleasure of waking up at 6:30 w the garbage trucks outside. I would not stay here again. Especially for the price. Oh and the shower curtain had so much mildew it was gross
- 3/5
The parking is behind building making it inconvenient to go inside. There is a lot of homeless hanging around making 2 woman uncomfortable. Ice maker is only on one floor and when I went to get ice there was probation officers looking for one of their tenants. You can only go onto floors with a card but anyone who has one can access floors.

The hotel itself was pleasant but the elevator was down for most of my stay (I didn’t mind it so much but I did feel for the gentleman who seemed elderly who took my bag up and down the stairs when I checked in and out). Also, the sheets had a stain on them that seemed a little off. I didn’t use them since I slept mostly on the other side and above the comforter for a bit.
- 2/5
We were in town for our mother's memorial service. At check-in on Thursday night we were told the elevators were down and would be working the next day. The elevator was out our whole stay, and at no point were we offered anything for the inconvenience. Did I mention we were on the 3rd floor? No assistance with bags, or the compensation for at least one night. I was really displeased with this stay, especially since it was a sensitive time for us (which was made aware at check-in). I've stayed there before and it was pleasant, so this was disappointing.
- 4/5
the bathroom lighting learning curve was steep. Too many buttons. The too soon on and too soon off was a problem. The bathroom shown on the bed and was sleep disruptive.

Painting from wall fell on bed and glass shattered all over bed.

They staff was great. Stay was just fine .

My sister and just lost our mother, so we needed one night of rest before we drove back to Arizona. Our stay was peaceful, clean, and comfortable. Everything we needed. We even booked for our return for the memorial service in April.
- 4/5
Location isn't great, but the bathroom was very clean. The AC worked well and it wasn't too noisy. Some noise from the street came in the mornings, but otherwise, pretty quiet. The coffee maker wasn't cleaned internally, but one would only know that by running it, and it seemed like it had not been used in a long time as fungus came out into the cup.
