The hotel is praised for its modern design, cleanliness, and friendly staff. However, the location is consistently criticized for the high number of homeless individuals and drug users in the area, making it feel unsafe. The breakfast is also a common complaint, with limited options and inconsistent quality.

There are a lot of hidden fees as well as unsafe conditions at this hotel. First, we were not aware that we would have to pay for parking which was about $35 for the night, and the closest parking garage was a six minute walk from the hotel. On the way to the parking garage, we saw several cop cars and someone being arrested. My family, which included an 8 year old, got to the hotel in the evening after eating at a restaurant, because our flight was delayed, and had to walk 6 minutes to the hotel on the inner city streets of San Fransisco with the drug dealers and sketchy people roaming around. We booked two rooms months in advance and once there the hotel attendant gave us rooms that were floors apart from each other. Other than my 8 year old my kids are teens, but they are still kids and I would have liked to be on the same floor as them. The hotel room itself was nice and pretty clean, although we did find some food left over from the previous person on the top shelf that had been missed by the cleaning staff. One thing that I thought was pretty neat was that the bed inclined in our room. Finally, there was a $17.66 facility fee that was charged to us after our stay, so all of those "amenities" like the "free" breakfast aren't really amenities at all, they are paid services that should be published in the overall price.

What does need to be stated is the safety factor - it is surrounded by homeless and drug addicts. We reserved a parking garage a few blocks away on Eddy and we literally walked through urine and active drug use happening on the sidewalks - syringes being held like cigarettes. They did not bother us though - we kept our eyes ahead and kept moving. We did take an uber later at night so we could get dropped off right at the hotel door. Heavy police presence on 6th street.

I really enjoyed the community lounge. To me that’s the heart of the hotel. Majority of my stay I was looking for the positive but that was rare. I thought every unit had a smart bed mines did not. Also it did not include a chair or a desk in my room. So it was no place to sit. Major inconvenience.

The only thing it was clean Rooms so small like pigeon nest. By opening the door you have the toilet with no door, then shower and right after narrow stairs about 20 to get to a small space cage about 1 m and a half with the bed on the floor, no window. My friend had claustrophobia and when we asked to change the person there was rude and he did not care et all. He gave us again the same type of room and after a lot of trouble he told us that if we pay extra we can have a room with regular bed. It was one of my worse experiences. For breakfast you could not find space to sit. Everything was occupied. Around the hotel people were taking drugs and the employe said that this is normal. It was really scary.

The breakfast is really not good at all. Maintaining the breakfast room is clearly not a priority. One of two elevators didn’t work for three days. The hotel is one block from skid row, if you are not accustomed to urban environments, you might consider staying at a different hotel.

I stayed in a Queen room. It was quite comfortable and not that small. There was no hot water problem. Also, there was free hot and cold water available on my floor, so I could drink as much water as I wanted. Let's start with the room. There is no table and chair to eat food. Actually, there is a desk, but no chair? The TVs are like historical artifacts, it's impossible for them to work properly, and this is supposed to be a 4-star hotel. The breakfast options are almost non-existent. You can only get a coffee and a croissant, there is nothing to actually fill you up. Moreover, you have limited time even for this breakfast because the breakfast room is very small and gets very crowded. As for the location, it is really, really bad! The moment you step out of the hotel, it feels like you are surrounded by a zombie herd. There are too many drug addicts around the hotel because it is right in the city center. Unfortunately, the location is terrible. As you move away from the hotel, and therefore the city center, the city starts to feel safer. If possible, you should really stay away from downtown San Francisco. There is a Target store about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. I walked there at 9 AM on a sunny day. There were more drug addicts on the streets than normal people, and unfortunately, they bother you. If I were a woman, I would probably leave San Francisco very early. I definitely don't think it is safe. I paid 150 dollars per night, including tax, and I am sure that if I hadn't made my reservation on the very last day (which I had to do because of my travel plans), I would have found a much, much better hotel.

Tiny rooms but great location. Everything was clean and modern looking. Staff was available, but self check in kiosk worked fine. Security by the door made for a little extra comfort since it’s located right on market street. If location is what you need, and you won’t be spending much time in the room, this is a great option.

There was nothing to like about this day. I literally walked out of the hotel and found a different hotel to stay. I didn't stay because of the way I was treated. After check-in, I went into my room and discovered that this room is some sort of afterthought room. It's a vertical room with some weird configuration. It's a very tiny vertical room that made me feel very claustrophobic. I came downstairs to report that the place was just not making me feel right and I needed them to give me a more traditional standard room because that configuration didn't work. It's a tiny vertical room. The bed is literally in your face when you lie on it, to the roof. Your face is literally a few inches away from the roof. That's the configuration of the room that they gave me. I came downstairs to report that this was not good for me personally because I am claustrophobic and the design of the room is just too claustrophobic. It's literally a vertical, tiny space. Everything is put together, but it's vertical. You go up the stairs, and up the stairs there's some weird sitting area in the middle of the stairs. If nobody told you that was a sitting area, you wouldn't even believe it. I didn't understand why I was put in that room, and when I came down to kindly request that, "Look, I am claustrophobic, that room is making me feel extremely uncomfortable." The staff were not willing to do anything for me at all, zero. I had to walk away and go find a different hotel. Up until now, I still haven't been contacted about my reimbursement of the booking refund and also the prepayment that I did for the check-in. I also paid for the thing that they do to reserve a certain amount on your card for your stay. I did that as well, and they still haven't refunded that either. It's been a shit show with these guys. I complained and sent the reports to them directly, and they told me to contact booking.com.

Great stay across from the Civic Center. Small room, but classy. The light switch took a bit to figure out (fast click vs long click for all features). Nice view on upper floor (paid extra for that). Near skid row... Count on nearby parking for $40/night... street parking is nearly impossible, even with handicap tag. Breakfast is minimal... suggest eating out. Price was right, though.

Nothing particularly noteworthy on the positive side. One important note for solo travelers: the surrounding area felt unsafe, and I didn't feel comfortable going out on my own. The situation in that part of San Francisco is concerning and worth keeping in mind when booking. Breakfast was disappointing — if you're looking for healthy options, choices are very limited. The room was quite small, which I expected, but I was hoping the shared spaces would make up for it with comfort and charm. Unfortunately, that wasn't really the case either.

When I called the AI told me an address for parking that was confusing and it was not clear that they allowed cars overnight. It gives you an address but not the name of the garage. the name of the garage is Trinity Plaza and their sign doesn't give an overnight rate but you can park there overnight. I had to call while driving around a very congested part of SF to get the correct address and name of the garage, so I was sure I was parking close to the hotel and in a safe place. You still have to walk a little way to the hotel. The hotel is on the fringe of the Tenderloin so be aware. Not a problem for us but if you are averse to seeing the homeless choose another place. We also found a FANTASTIC restaurant a couple blocks away called 54 Mint. If you love great Italian food go there! The #7 bus stops on the same block and you can take it straight out to Golden Gate Park. Super easy. For the price this is the best deal in SF.

Shower was small but decent with a rainfall shower. The lights were very finicky and not always working. There was only ever 1 person working and the service was not great. I asked for extra towels and they must have forgotten because I never got them. The phone in our room was broken and they said they would fix it but never did. They don’t clean the rooms daily either. Breakfast was not much. The lounge area was ok. Location was easy enough with public transportation very accessible. Room was clean, but common areas were consistently messy. The common areas are a fun amenity for those looking to work a remote 9-5 from there, but if you plan on using them I’d prepare to clean up your own area (BYO cleaning wipes). Rooms are small but efficient enough. Gym is better than expected, and definitely a highlight.

There was absolutely no on-site parking. Available parking was half a mile away and $40 per day. The area of the hotel was extremely bad. Didn't even make it to check in. Drove around for 30 mins to find parking. Then after arriving to the hotel, all the doors were locked and the call box was not working. Waited for about 5 mins and had to call someone to let us in. The front desk reception had been sitting maybe 50ft from the door the entire time we were waiting. Later called to get a refund and never made contact with the manager.

It is a little surprising not being able to just enter the facility do to doors being locked for security….homeless near by…once you have your room card, very easy to walk in and out of hotel, rooms are small but very equipped with everything you need, very clean, very nice staff, plus they let us leave our luggage after check out to enjoy a couple hours extra

Was difficult to find close affordable parking. Tried calling the hotel to ask where I could find parking and the entire system is automated with no option to reach the front desk. Went inside to ask and the only staff member there was new and didn’t know the area at all. The closest lot is $40 a day and about a seven minute walk. The room was just ok for the price. The TV didn’t work, it kept turning off and on. The walls are pretty thin, we could hear the man next to us snoring at night and other people flushing their toilets.

The Yotel hotel is very clean, contemporary with a large lobby, comfortable seating areas. To enter the first time, I pushed the doorbell and then the staff would open the door. Later I could enter the hotel via my hotel room key card. There is always a security guard in the lobby The Yotel hotel is conveniently located across the street from the BART Civic Center Station and on the east side of Market Street. I was impressed with all the staff who were warm, professional and accommodating. The two elevators were large and quick. I used the basement gym that was clean with a bathroom. My 7th floor spacious hotel room had a comfortable queen bed with a large window with electric shades and city views. There were many safety features in the room (including a digital combination drawer to store a laptop and valuables), an open closet, full-length mirror, large TV screen, and adjustable room temperature control panel. I missed having a tea kettle/coffee maker and mini refrigerator. However, I discovered in the second-floor breakfast room, a mini refrigerator to store food. My bathroom had a large window with adjustable, electric shades (one as a night shade and the other as a daylight shade). There was a large walk-in shower with rain shower head and hand-held shower option to accommodate wheel-chair access, a sink, toilet and ironing board and iron. The mirror above the sink had Breakfast on the second floor was good. There were apples, assorted rolls, muffins, croissants, fruit and granola bars, oatmeal, oatmeal milk, whole milk, yogurt, a coffee and hot water maker machine. I was able to store my carry on when I arrived before check-in and when I checked out so that I could take the BART to the Embarcadero and walk to the ferry building. The shower curtain wasn't long enough so that the shower water would run onto the bathroom floor. The curtains were sturdy but the length should be 2 centimeters longer or lower the shower rod.

Clean room, staff was great. However, the hotel may be too close to noisy areas in SF to guarantee a restful and quiet night. I had difficulty sleeping without being awoken by police or ambulane sirens and people shouting outside the hotel. As for the complimentary breakfast, there wasn't much. They ran out of milk for the cereal very quickly. And the cereal was the highlight of the breakfast options. Yotel did hold my suitcase for me even after I checked out of my room which I greatly appreciated. Overall it was an average experience for me, and I do appreciate the service of the staff.

No, my problems are more ongoing. The premium room pictures clearly showed a chair under a small side table built into the bed that could be be considered to function as a small desk.Either chair or side table existed in the room. The staff said none of thier rooms had a desk after calling the manager who refused to speak to me. Pictures are worth a thousand words, but 5he staff tried to make it user error because the text description didn't say desk. But the pictures for each room type were different and clearly showed a chair under a table. Also other rooms had pictures of actual desks but they said no rooms had desks, so those pictures are lies according to the manager. They didn't even have the grace to apologize for my inconvenience. Other problems with the room, the shower lacks a grab bar even though the floor is not non-slip. The TV is slow, it blackscreens for 10 seconds when changing channels. A pain when I am unfamiliar with the channels. The channel guide didn't work, I had to set the date and time to get it to work but it didn't populate the listing. The light turns off automatically... When I was taking a shower.... The switch to shift shower from wand to overhead is hidden for anyone of standard height... It is very small under the temperature control. I have a lot more to say but am only allowed 1500 characters

Great location if you need to be downtown. We were there for two nights for a show at Bill Graham and it was great walking to everywhere. The hotel is situated in the worst location in San Francisco. Right outside the entrance, there are many homeless people and drug addicts; police cars are parked at the door every single day—it is truly dismal. I felt like I was in a drug den. I have never felt so uncomfortable and so unsupported while staying at a hotel; I was terrified. The staff members were unfriendly. The hotel was exorbitantly expensive. For the price I paid, I could have stayed near the Pier, which boasts the best location in the city. I didn't even have the courage to eat breakfast at the hotel because it was so filthy. The room we stayed in was incredibly cramped and horrible—I would not recommend it to anyone. It was the worst hotel experience I have ever had—truly lamentable.

And good luck trying to park, you literally have to pay $20 a night to park several blocks away, so you have to pay an uber to take you and your luggage to your hotel, but I wish i could give the parking garage a review, if i could i would give it 5 stars and sleep there in my car for a more comfortable stay!

I’ll take the hit for not better preparing myself for the terrible parking situation. For those that haven’t been in downtown San Francisco in a while it’s as disgusting and urine filled as ever. I wasn’t excited about the $40 tourism charge upon check-in even though I had prepaid on Expedia. And the staff said that it was a $20 overnight parking fee…… It was over double that…… the room was clean for the most part except underneath the bed was absolutely disgusting, and I only knew about that because one of my kids toys rolled underneath there. The continental breakfast was absolutely terrible. If you show up anytime after eight, don’t expect there to be anything. I do not recommend anybody stay here.

  • Nicholas Mar 2026 · via hotels.com

Inside, the staff is very helpful and accommodating without being invasive. The rooms are peculiarly engineered, so make sure that you know what you are about to spend the night in. I think the room that I rented for two nights is made for single travelers or a close couple because I was in a sky cabin and the first thing that I notice when I walk into the room was just a stand-alone toilet. No doors or walls separating the toilet from the main cabin area, so make sure you are ultra comfortable with your cabin-mate in very close quarters. Then you climb a steep spiral ladder/staircase to the loft sleeping cubby, with a once-smart tv at the foot of the bed. If you are claustrophobic, I would look for a different floor plan but if you don’t mind, it’s a fun and futuristic theme. Everything about the hotel is great in that it’s very quick and easy check-in, resembling checking in at the airport or at a tech conference or something. The cabins are designed to resemble air travel cabins and are designed to feature minimalist and space-saving utility. If you’ve ever seen that show “tiny house hunters” and how everything is engineered to make the most out of tiny spaces, then you get the idea of what the cabins are like on the inside. The water and ice machine on each floor has the best crunchy ice you’ve ever had at a hotel. Check out 2nd floor Mission Cntrl!

My room was cute, but the amount they hold up front is kinda crazy. I called the night before and was told they hold $150. In actuality, they hold $75 per day and I was there 5 days! So instead of $890 like I expected, they held almost $1100 on my card smh.

This hotel was very cute, clean and convient. The tiny room provided all I needed and more. Great view of market st. Walking distance from resturants. The complimentary breakfast included coffee, tea, apples, oatmeal, pastries, yogurt, granola bars and water. I like that there is a water/ice machine on my floor near the elavator with provided cups.

Said I would pay 41 at property. And then all of sudden it was 137 dollars. After I left the hotel a couple hours later, the hotel is charging my card $100, then $150 and the $5 charge…. And haven’t received my deposit. I didn’t damage anything. I didn’t take anything I wasn’t supposed to. So I’m not sure why they tried charging my Card 3 different times and amounts. I think I left a bag of trash but that’s because I couldn’t carry it along With my 6 other bags of belongings. I’m disappointed

The only difference between my room at YOTEL and a much pricier one is square footage. But who needs it? It had amenities to make me feel pampered, thoughtful layout, high-end fixtures, double shades, comfortable bed. The room was super clean and quiet. The hotel location was within 5 minutes of the places I was going and access to public transportation was practically at the front door. Every staff member was helpful and friendly. The building itself is historic and got through the earthquakes of 1906 and 1989 damage-free due to the 2.5-foot-thick walls, not a bad safety feature. My thanks to the people who conceived, designed, built, and maintain the YOTEL notion.

The location in the city center felt fine, and the hotel’s 24-hour security was reassuring. However, the stay itself wasn’t the most comfortable (the NYC Yotel was better). The room layout was awkward and cramped — I had to climb over the bed to reach the window shades, and the face towels were hung so low they strained my back. Choppy wifi. Very little front-desk support after hours. The only place to sit was on the bed, and the shower leaked water to the bed. The bed duvet fabric felt rough, with a strong detergent odor that made me cough. Breakfast was mostly sugar and carbs. Some fruits and protein would have been nice.

My room was extremely tiny. As a single traveler I barely fit inside. No bathroom door. If you’re traveling with another person, do not get the sky room. There is no privacy. The area is terrible. Nothing but homelessness and stool on the street the moment you open the door to exit the hotel. Stores are about a 10 minute walk away. Chinatown about 15 mins away. That’s where the good food is to eat in the area. It was too pricy for what it was. Yet it was one of the cheaper options at the time of booking.

Loved everything about the property save for the street situation. The area has a number of transient individuals and folx experiencing homelessness but, for the most part, they seem to be harmless. Loved that the train is across the street and that the main bus routes are close by. Breakfast in the AM is a nice perk, as well. The rooms are neat, modern, and clean, staff is friendly —s/o to Mary for being so wonderful and kind to me—and the bath products etc. are high quality. I’d stay at Yotel again for sure.

It’s a great hotel. Clean, comfy, and modern. Friendly and helpful staff. However, the area around the hotel is unfortunate (though it’s not the hotel’s fault, just a circumstance)(the same can be said for all of downtown San Francisco). Just a lot of open air drug use and sketchy people. As long as you stay on the top floors, you won’t hear the commotion downstairs. There is also good security that prevents strangers from entering the hotel. A 24/7 guard and double key card entrance to the building and the elevator. So overall, excellent property in the not best area (though that can be said of every hotel in downtown, even more expensive ones)

The rooms were tiny and tidy, as promised. And a fantastic deal, as long as you don't plan to spend time in your room. Convenient location, near BART and buses. As a regular visitor to SF, I was still unprepared for the Tenderloin zombie factor: I asked the security guard to walk me to the curb to get an Uber at night — and I'm from New York! (During the day, I was able to walk to coffee without a problem.) Also, when I called to ask for a mini fridge and iron in my room, they said they would deliver them. When I asked at the "front desk" 2h later, they said they don't have mini fridges: I was speaking to someone in a call center, not on property.

I never even got out of the car, just ‘nope’d out and drove into the alley around the block that seemed safer than the hotel entrance and called somewhere else. The listing showed parking available - no. Parking exists, but you need to find it yourself, there is no designated space or garage and I wouldn’t have left the rental on that street. They will not refund me, even though I never checked in. But honestly, I’d pay the 200 and change to not stay there since it was so off putting from the street. Maybe the rooms are nice, but I wouldn’t know. Best of luck if you book at SF downtown location - really it should say ‘Mission’ not downtown, but then no one would book it.

The location of Yotel San Francisco is strategic and closer to Union Square. The room where we stayed is a corner queen. Other than that, hotel was incredibly easy to check into, cute little space for not a long stay. It was everything we needed for a place to stay at.

I feel a lot of important information was not given to me at the time of booking. There were a lot of surprise fees and I was flat out lied to. For example, the Wi-Fi did not even work but yet it’s advertised as having Wi-Fi. My room had what looked to be throw up on the floor that was obviously not even cleaned before it was rented to me! I had an unsettling feeling at the hotel, especially when I went into a shared bathroom on a different floor I was not staying on. I entered the bathroom & immediately felt a heaviness in my chest or uneasy feeling. I proceeded to open the stall door to use the restroom but the overwhelming feeling of something not good caused me to change my mind on using the restroom & I immediately walked out. At the time I did not know my friend was experiencing the same feelings in our room. When I got back to my room I told her what I felt and she said she felt the same thing, while I was gone. The feeling was so strong we decided to look up deaths at the yotel hotel. Lo and behold a man died in a stall of a shared bathroom exactly 1yr prior! It took them days to find his body! Only when a liquid substance was ozzing from beneath the stall door and several complaints of a terrifying odor is when the man’s body was found. Was the bathroom not cleaned everyday?? Look it up yourself. You will read what I could not believe I myself was reading! Trust Your Instincts if you feel something. My stay was a overall horrible experience and waste of my money

I loved my stuff. Very easy check in and out. Great customer service. Only thing is the pillows were too big lol and my neck kind of hurt in the morning.

My stay at Yotel SF was overall good, but I have a few comments: the breakfast was very poor, and it would be better not to mention breakfast availability at all. Upon check-in, they block a deposit for damages, which I found odd for a franchise property.

Great less expensive option for JPM week. Very small rooms but perfect for one person. Clean and decently located. Market street is a bit sketch but hotel had good security.

The bad: rooms are tiny with little room for multiple people to walk past each other - some rooms enter through toilet with mattress on floor in a loft (up a flight of stairs with very low ceiling) and TV on floor (below foot of the mattress). I found the loft stairs and floor level changes to be a trip hazard and was very concerned navigating these in the middle of the night to get to the restroom. There is very limited closet, if any, and very limited places to put luggage. Other than the bed in one room style, or an 8” shelf in another room style, there was no place to work on a computer. (There are telephone rooms on the hotel 2nd floor, but all were full every time I looked.) The Ugly: My wife and I are Seniors in good health. In booking the rooms through Hotel.com, the pictures made the rooms look spacious and normal, and the “uniqueness” of the hotel was not obvious, at least when scanning through multiple hotels options. Certainly the price did not give a clue of the minimalistic rooms as our room with taxes/fees was over $1900 for 3 nights. Finally, while deterioration in this business area is an SF problem and we never felt threatened on the streets, this corner of SF has a lot of drug issues, homeless, litter, and protests.

Solid overall. Some of the rooms are extremely small but the common areas and phone booths are good for business travel. This is on a part of market street that has some sketchy people outside but the hotel has security.

The view from the room towards city hall was breathtaking. It was an easy check-in. The breakfast was very basic but quick and exaxtly what we needed. Also the gym has everything that you need to get in a workout. I would definitely stay here again!

We live in the Central Valley and drove to the BART station at Dublin/Pleasanton and took the train to the Civc Center stop which was right next to the hotel (yotel?) The hotel itself was very nice and…I’m not sure the right word…upscale isn’t the correct description, although the hotel is quite nice. The only thing I can think of is “yuppy”, but I don’t want to use this in a derogatory way. EVERYTHING here is very minimal. You check yourself in, make your own key, and all that. There is one person in the lobby to help, and they were very helpful. Our room was a queen bed on the 9th floor and it was very clean, but very small. It being small isn’t a big deal, but there is no clear wall or boundary between the bathroom and bedroom which was a little unpleasant. The gym in the basement had a good variety of clean and well kept equipment. Outside the hotel is definitely sketchy as heck, but just keep your head on a swivel and you’ll be ok. Lots of homeless and people with mental health issues walking around. We walked about a 1/2 mile to Union Square at night and didn’t feel completely unsafe. The next night we walked to the Orpheum as well. We also had the chance to take a Waymo driverless car to Pier 39. That was a neat experience. I’d stay here again.

Modern, clean, beautiful hotel. Everything is new and sparkling. 3 minutes to Bart station which brings you to the Airport. Lots of restaurants, theatres, landmarks in the walking distance. We will be back to this hotel again and again. Customer service on the front desk was friendly and exceptional. Security guards are always near the entrance. Fantastic option for this low price!

girlies! if you’re taking a solo/group trip, i would recommend if you’re able to, to book somewhere else not in the tenderloin district— a lot of people experiencing homelessness are within this area. in order to stay safe and avoid any risk, we made it a priority to not stay out too late at this hotel. after 8 pm it gets busier and it’s not as safe. the security is really nice too, but generally, in the day you feel safer. i booked this because it was the closest to the area i needed to be in and it worked for me since i spent all day sight seeing and not in the hotel. it was nice and clean, breakfast was okay.

Convenient to many areas of downtown SF however would not recommend hotel for families or single travelers due to the safety of the area surrounding the hotel. The staff was friendly with the exception of one clerk that we had frequent miscommunications with that led to multiple room changes however we ended on a good note thanks to Erik at the front desk! Views of Civic Center only available on 9th floor and the noise from the street is very loud on the lower floors but walking distance to Bill Graham venue, Market cable car stop, BART, and Chinatown. Light breakfast included but lots of check in fees in the form of destination fees and security deposit not advertised on Expedia.

The place was clean and the staff were kind. The elevator broke down and the area did not seem safe. There were police on every block, all night with their lights on to deter the house less but it was not effective and distracting. Not an area I would walk around at night by myself, but the hotel itself was great.
