This is not a typical modern hotel, but a somewhat old fashioned bed and breakfast. It is very conveniently located near Union Square, the Powell St Bart stop, the trolley, and plenty of sights and restaurants. We also walked to Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli square, which is a bit hilly. The hotel itself is charming, spacious, clean, and staffed by very friendly and helpful people. The bed is comfortable. The room is big and has a gas fire place. The breakfast included toast, eggs, oatmeal, fruit and my favorite thing, the cinnamon bun breakfast bread! We also enjoyed the very pleasant wine and cheese reception before dinner. For both, the staff was attentive and gracious and the offerings were generous. Alas, a very minor dissatisfaction, was the street noise on Bush St, which required closing the windows. But, given the opportunity, I would most definitely stay at the White Swan Inn again. Thank you all, for making our stay very enjoyable.

The White Swan Inn is a quaint hotel in a convenient area of San Francisco. We were able to walk or take public transportation to see all the highlights of the city. The inn was clean and offered a nice breakfast.

The rooms are a little too dated. The room was very stuffy so we had to open Windows and there was no screens. There are not enough Outlets in the room. Also I am 5 ft 2 and it was very difficult for me to climb up into the bed. I know a lot of it has to do with the charm but some updates would make it more comfortable.

They offered breakfast. Easy check-in. Good location. The room was nice, but no A/C and everything feels dated and not intentional. Overall, the place just needs attention. It's nice enough and my stay was fine. But it felt dirty and like it was neglected in general. I see that it could be amazing, but right now it still needs to be updated, even with the retro theme.

A very nice boutique hotel. The room was large and comfortable, with a great fireplace and big windows. The wine and nibbles in the afternoon, as well as the all-day coffee and tea were a great bonus.

An oasis in the middle of the city. Quaint and quirky in a nice way. Something different from the mainstream. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Old fashioned hospitality. We loved the lounge/ dining area and the after five drinks and nibbles. A lovely touch. Rooms were well appointed. Nothing. A lovely place to stay. Different but nice. The inn is conveniently located and well secured. I wished it was a bit quieter, but made sense with the urban location and older building. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast had variety. The room was spacious and reasonably maintained. Very well priced and overall a great stay!

Comfortable, classy fun room and inn. Fireplace is nice touch. Bed is awesome, best sleep ever. Leon is wonderful, works so hard, so friendly. Love the location, we walk to everything. Walked to all our favorite restaurants, shopping, our concert at The Masonic. No longer a "spread" at happy hour, just a staff person serving a tiny cheese plate and glass of wine. Bump up the breakfast as it used to be...quiche, sausage, bacon, nicer pastries. Covid is over, bring it all back. We skipped it all. Valet parking is crazy expensive now (used to be $30/nite, now $78/$88!). We parked ourselves in a very near garage.

Had a wonderful stay at the White Swan Inn, but I especially want to thank Cody for being incredibly kind and helpful on my checkout day. He let me comfortably stay in the lounge area for several hours while waiting for my flight, which made the end of my San Francisco trip so much easier and stress-free. Great hospitality, great attitude, and truly appreciated. Thank you, Cody!

This is a great alternative in downtown SF to the bland and sterile Hiltons, Sheratons, etc. It's nicely funky, with a mish mash of furniture, patterns and colors, which gives it a very fun energy. Has it seen better days? Probably. It's a bit old and could use a refresh. But our room was large, the bed was comfy, the staff was warm and friendly and the location is so central to walking everywhere. We especially loved the old cage elevator.

staff was nice. the roof in the room was pretty rough, also it was hard to find the amenities in a hotel that was really small. went to see about the wine and snacks and i couldn't find it anywhere and i roamed into areas of the hotel to try and find it but i felt like i kept walking into places that i shouldn't have been, a few signs would have been nice or something. the staff was very friendly though, shout out to the guy who showed me some good food spots in the area and also a few shops to peruse

The size of the room, working fireplace, king size bed, bath products, the location, & free wine & cheese hour. The cleanliness level wasn't great. Lots of dust, grime, and marks in the room. Felt like the whole place was a bit shabby tbh. The "breakfast" was pathetic. For one it was cheap cereal, cheap(ish) pastries, some oatmeal, lumpy yogurt, and hard boiled eggs every morning. No other continental offerings like cold meats, cheeses, fruit or anything for those with allergies. It just seemed like they were doing the cheapest and bare minimum they could & still make it passable.

The hotel was clean and the location was great. The staff were extremely helpful and the breakfast/afternoon snacks were delightful. Only complaint was the street noise, two out of my three night stay I was kept awake by truck emptying recycling which seem to go on for over an hour. I understand that it’s an older building and an urban location. I would still stay here again.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is older and a bit worn overall, but clean. I booked this hotel because it was very highly rated. I would not agree. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive. They helped me navigate the city as a solo traveler. The building can only be accessed by keycard/buzzing in which made me feel extra safe. The location is great - walkable to Chinatown and North Beach. There is no AC so the room felt a little stale at times, but they provided fans and the city itself is cool, so an open window was great. The breakfast is basic but the coffee was surprisingly tasty. I definitely enjoyed my stay and would come back again. It was a little pricey, but very charming.

A cute, cozy hotel. Love the old historic feel of it. We really enjoyed the cozy dining area for breakfast and wine. The place could really use some new paint and a deep cleaning though. Our room was a deluxe queen with fireplace but not the one pictured upon reservation. Small bathroom vanity--barely room for a curling iron, no soaking tub. Pretty noisy at night. Old TV that struggled working. No blackout curtains.

There was a vacuum cleaner just outside my door. I figured it would be put away, but it was still there when I came back. The next morning, the housekeeping cart was there too. It felt like stepping into the janitor’s closet. I mentioned it to the front desk on the second day, hoping they would move it, but when I returned hours later, it was still parked in front of my room. I asked why and was told, “That’s where we keep it.” When I booked, I liked that they advertised a restaurant next door that delivers. I understood when the restaurant was closed on Sunday, but I was disappointed to find it was also closed on Monday. If you’re going to advertise something on your website, list the days it’s available. When I mentioned I was bummed, the desk girl said, “They’re a separate business.” She did not care that the website was misleading. They say they’re a “boutique hotel,” but it’s a B&B. The place is dim and dingy. The sheets were clean, but everything was slightly damp. The paint around the doors was chipped and dirty, and over the tub is bubbling up. The bed was uncomfortable. lumpy and sloped from too many people sleeping on it over time. Finally, the doors to the hotel open inward, which is a fire hazard. Doors should always open out, or if there's a rush, it creates a bottleneck, and people get trampled or crushed. It’s against SF safety codes; I’m shocked they haven't been fined.

Cool funky chic hotel, has an elevator from the 20s that you open the doors manually... fireplace in room.... only complaint would be no A/C in the summer and the mattress was a bit worn, not firm enough.

Appreciated lady Jemma in the breakfast area ( most likely mispronounced her name) - super kind and nice. Our room was vert spacious. Wine serving is incredible. Very classy and cozy hotel which is really difficult to find nowadays

I really enjoyed my time at White Swan Inn. I reached out the week of my stay for an early check-in and was grateful for a quick response! I was fortunate they were able to accommodate me and check in was quick and easy. I used the valet service as well which is not cheap but was super convenient and in my opinion, worth the money! I would definitely stay here again.

Beware of this misleading hotel that robs you. The valet parking sign says $74 for a whole night, yet they charged my card $84 ($10 extra dollars because of taxes. )What they do is park your car next to the garage that charges $20. I had to wait for 30 minutes for my car to be dropped off after I had requested it. What kind of valet parking is that? The free cold breakfast does not make up for the dirty and overpriced hotel. I will provide pictures and you judge for yourself.

    1. The windows don’t have screens so don’t leave them open at night (got attacked by mosquitoes) use the fan in the closet. 2. Coffee machine in the bedroom was very dirty on the inside. This is such a cozy and charming place with thoughtful considerations to decor and service. The rooms however are dated. Blinds looked grimy and were broken. Tape on windows from where it was cracked. Furniture was worn, but this is overlooked by the fireplace, incredibly comfortable bed with clean comfy sheets. They offer an actual usable bathtub, nice toiletries and have robes for guests. All of this and the character make it easy to overlook the age especially in the romantic glow of the fireplace. I prefer the personal attentive cozy environment of the common areas, the staff that White Swan offers and would happily choose this over a Hampton Inn. Other guests were pleasant and friendly. I wasn't aware that there is a separate fee for the open tea bar and coffee bar they have (which please keep milk out later for those who like it in their tea please) and the complimentary Wine Hour, but again this did make the stay more relaxing. Breakfast was simple yet served in style and really nice. Great quality.

Afternoon wine hour was a highlight—Luis and his team were so friendly and welcoming. The only minor downside was check-in and check-out, where the front desk staff (different each time) didn’t make eye contact initially, which felt a bit impersonal. However, the only thing left to be desired is location, as the hotel is situated within the heart of lower nob hill (i.e., close to the tenderloin). Nonetheless, this was a non-issue during my stay and shouldn't act as a deterrent to any interested parties, but rather something to be aware of before booking. With that being said, the location is very central and convenient. Overall, I'd happily stay here again!

Fireplaces throughout the property made it warm and inviting. Wine hour was nice with 4 wine choices, cheese and crackers. Free water and sparkling waters were included in the room fridge in generous amounts. Breakfast was simple but good for continental. Choices included fruit ( not cut but whole), 2 types of pastries, bread to make toast, a few different types of jam, several choices of dry cereal, oatmeal(the only hot choice) milk ( with options of soy, low fat etc), orange juice, coffee and tea. Very charming and comfortable bed. A great attention to antique details. A cool fireplace. The many street views where beautiful . The noise from the restaurant/bar across the street was a little loud for a Thursday night, but wound down after the midnight hours. I wish the staff was more outgoing and made my friend and I more welcome. There was some hostile energy from the unit below me and on the adjoining room. I believe the hotel could be more inclusive and friendly to us as I experience much prejudice as a transgender person. My friend reported back to me that the majority of people at the breakfast floor appeared to be heternormative, conservative, and not very friendly. Perhaps more education on transgenderism and the importance of respect for gender identity expression would be beneficial and appropriate.

We had a lovely stay at the White Swan. The complimentary onsite tea and coffee plus continental breakfast were very nice, the common area lounge room is well-appointed, and the fireplaces in each room were a nice touch. This is an older property, but has lots of character and the staff is helpful without being too intrusive. A real value at the price we paid! Expect that this place is a bit older, with the charm of an old-fashioned elevator - substantial feeling - and a swinging 60s type decor. Our room was lovely and comfortable. The staff were very nice and helpful. I appreciated the included breakfast, which just started our days of exploration off really well. We could walk or take transit to the things we wanted to see, and one of the cable cars was close enough to be an option for transit.

The art and vibe is cool, but the hotel is older so carpet and windows etc could use an upgrade. There was no AC so in August it was very hot in my 3rd floor room, and even though the outdoor temp cooled down, the outside air didn’t cool the room down to a temperature suitable for sleeping; even with a fan. There was also a lot of street noise outside my room since there’s a bar right across the street. It was fine for a short business trip to SF but probabaly wouldn’t stay there again.

Clean, comfortable, and very charming room. While the room wasn’t spacious it wasn’t cramped at all. There were also a lot of books in the room that I thought was a very nice touch. I only stayed one night so I didn’t have time to read one but would have loved sitting by the fire reading a book if I did. All the staff members were very friendly and helpful. Room isn’t particularly soundproof but that is to be expected with an older building, area is quiet so it wasn’t a huge deal. Very convenient for Grace Cathedral, 5 minute walk if that. Unless there is a back entrance I didn’t see it isn’t wheelchair accessible, but I’m sure that’s true for a lot of the buildings in SF. If I come back for another concert at the cathedral I will definitely stay here again. Also plenty of dining options very close.

One of my most favorite rooms I've ever stayed in. It felt like home esp with the little fireplace. Really conveniently walkable. Only thing I would change is the motion sensor in the bathroom light switch, it doesn't stay on very long and you have to keep waiving at it.
