Reviews
The hotel is in a poor location with a high concentration of homelessness and drug use, and many rooms lack private bathrooms. However, the rooms are generally clean and well-maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Been there multiple times always been comfortable and quiet

This hotel is in a bad neighborhood. There were numerous homeless people sleeping in the street. My young daughter was too scared to get out of the car, and begged me to not stay there. I had to drove off and find accommodations in another part of town.

Nice breakfast. Good start of the day.

I didn’t even make it inside the building. It was so sketchy and super active. I couldn’t tell who was homeless or was just there. And I have a carry-on with me. No parking garages were open. No street parking. Lesson learned.

Also folks who stay here smoke drugs other than Weed or Tobacco. That synthetic smell floats throughout building and my room. Really terrible. I am happy I had friends that allowed me to stay with them in their apartments, I COULD NOT sleep overnight there.

Great location and price. The staff is friendly and funny when you are nice to them

Nice hotel and very affordable. I was allowed to check in at 1:30 .My room was very clean with a comfortable bed and a mini fridge .Three blocks or less to Market street you cant ask for more for the price ,and the homeless totally harmless .

I was pleasantly surprised by the communal feel of the setting, and since I was encountering some unforseen issues with my debit card; the manager was kind enough to me to forego any deposit. The staff overall are pleasant and arduous, accomplishing most tasks seemingly flawlessly and quietly. The only issues I had were the paltry Continental breakfast and the arduous task of securing extra towels. Other than that, the Warfield hotel plays as well as the Arena, although I didn't see Faith No More like I have there!

Unsafe, loud, dirty area.

•Front desk person was rude •Location was plagued with homeless and drugged people •Towels had hairs

Was wonderful I loved the fact that there was a lot of places to go eat, super close to transportation, close to union square

Nothing felt safe. We were followed from three blocks away to the hotel. The bathrooms were sketchy. The room was sketchy. The fact that everything smelled like pee was disgusting was afraid to leave to go get dinner because of all the homeless people sitting right outside the door.
- 5/5
Rooms were clean, had microwave and mini refrigerator, bed was confortable.
- 0.5/5
Dirty, disgusting, creepy. There was a tuft of hair on the floor. The towels have blood or boogers on them. There was only 1 piece of artwork and it was extremely creepy. I would not recommend staying here.

I stayed here for 2 days. The staff was unobtrusive and discreet. I had breakfast on the checkout date and their machine actual made a perfectly adequate macchiato. The room was quite spacious and everything worked. The attendant that checked me in was professional and made the check-in process pleasent. No difficulties whatsoever.

Don’t do it! I know, you just want a place to lay your head down at the end of the night, just a bed right. We did too and had MAJOR regrets. Let’s start where it’s located.. Taylor street, where the homeless are rampant, and while they don’t personally bother you, they leave a less than desirable smell behind. The building itself is so outdated, I got to hear the 3-7am boom box party out front my window every night. The bed was uneven and squeaked with every movement, the tv turned on, was damaged and didn’t actually work. The phone rang but only static came through, the pipe sticking out of the floor, sure to be good for a middle of the night toe stub. The shared bathroom and showers are quite literally a free for all in the middle of the hall, and even the private bathroom looked like it had been quickly wiped with a rag. It had character, the lift was neat and there were minor upgrades. Overall, would never go back and will not recommend to anyone.

The owner is very professional. The property is just two or three minutes away from Market Street.

Historic hotel and from what they have control of the areas are really clean. Great cable channels too.

It is what it is. Take or leave it.

Great location close to BART. At the edge if Tenderloin that seems to have cleaned up considerably over the last year. Recommended for a good priced simple hotel in downtown SF. Hot drinks, toast, and sweet treats in the lobby every morning.

The facility itself was very subpar, and unfortunately we found roaches in our room, which made the stay extremely unpleasant. We also requested a late checkout and were denied without any flexibility. Overall, this was a disappointing experience and I would not recommend staying here.

Wow. This place sucks. From the bums outside to the shared 1 toilet and one creepy shower. The batroom doesnt even have a sink... that means anyone who uses it gets their shiiit on the doorknob and the light switch. Loud room maybe got 2 hours of sleep. Would recommend to my exwife or anyone else i hate.

I rarely write reviews, but this experience was so bad that I felt compelled to share. If I could give less than one star, I would. The hotel room was extremely noisy and had an unpleasant odor (stinky). The breakfast was unacceptable expired muffins, only coffee, jam, and plain white bread. Overall, a terrible stay, and I will not be returning.

I’ve never been to a more affordable hotel that had such wonderful service. While it does provide the basics and they’re limited in a lot of ways I couldn’t help but enjoy the rich history this place instills. It’s ‘like’ going into an old persons home that has that distinct ‘old person smell’ (we’ll all get it if we’re lucky) but you’ll be transported back to 1934 when things were simpler, things that were important were actually important, and the best things in life were in fact free. It doesn’t cost anything to be a good person and this building reflects that motto. By which I mean, Everything works, from the building to the staff, and does so effortlessly providing you the means to do what’s on your agenda with no delay. Night on the town- check. Easy to find public transportation- check. Hearing kids laughing and playing in the halls- check.

We booked this hotel, obviously trusting Expedia. It was only 2 miles from downtown so we thought with the “good rating,” it would be a decent hotel (not luxury). We pull up to the hotel looking for parking when we realize there is tons of homeless people outside the door/street. There were 3 cops in the intersection trying to control the crowd and homeless while people were walking into the street and making illegal exchanges. Note, you have to park around the block so you have to get your luggage down the street and around the corner to get to the hotel & leave your car in an unknown area. Also, did not feel safe because they were blocking the entrance and would have to fight through them. We called and explained but they said they didn’t have problems inside the hotel, it was the one a block down. I understand they can’t control the streets but having to walk a good distance to get to the hotel while they can’t protect us outside & while they admitted to the other one not being safe did not ease our tension. We never received a refund b/c they said it was safe. Despite this, we lost the money & booked another one outside the city b/c we felt that unsafe/uneasy. One of the excuses they used about not getting a refund back too was that we didn’t want to pay for parking. However, to pay for a different hotel & gas to go back and forth means it obv. wasn’t about the money. Be aware of this hotel, esp. women!!

Here are the positives: the bed was firm but the sheets and pillows were actually very clean and no bugs! The mounted flat screen tv was a decent size and was loud enough to drown out the police sirens, screeching tires and drug induced screams all night. You are also very close to Union Square and some great dining options. Forgot to buy some waters, snacks and maybe an adult beverage? Don’t worry tons of liquor stores on the same block…the front deskman even personally escorted me the half block down the street and acted as my body guard. The other cool thing is that you really get to experience what a 126 year old hotel feels like because nothing has been updated or cleaned since the turn of the 20th century. A piss stained elevator will jolt you up to your floor, pardon the metal gate, its all such a fun experience. But hey to be fair….$100 a night in San Francisco, not too bad these days!

This place is very good. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Staying there depends on the type of traveler you are. If your focus is public trans, no frills hotel, good value, this is a great choice. The area the hotel is in is a bit dirty, and gritty. SF has a homeless problem, and it’s very visible in this area of the city. There is a lot of late night noise, but I think that adds to the charm. I would recommend this space if you’re a low frills traveler that seeks a connivence, price, and a real SF experience. I’d stay again, and I look forward to it.

The hotel refunded our upgrade money and informed us that a refund would have to be dealt with through hotels.com. When dealing with them via text they sent us a text of a woman's reservation details for a different hotel, the room types, check in and out info, her name and email, then said "sorry wrong chat". Very unprofessional on part on hotels.com and not very safe to be accidentally providing other people's itinerary to the wrong people. They then refused to provide a refund and said it was because the hotel wouldn't approve, yet they seemed to have no problem refunding the uprgade onsight and said we had to deal with hotels.com. So use caution in dealing with hotels.com, because you don't know if someone else may be getting your info accidentally in a "wrong chat".

I am a disabled person and I need a bathroom and this hotel does not have rooms with private bathrooms. I had to walk around the building to use the bathroom in the middle of the night twice. If I wanted to stay in a hostel I could have done so and pay $60 instead of $260. Total rip off, don’t stay here.

I was really looking forward to staying in a hotel that seemed to have that classic San Francisco charm—but wow, was I wrong. I booked this place way in advance on April 20, 2025, for a stay on June 5th, nearly two months ahead. Wanting to be sure of a smooth late-night arrival, I even called the hotel ahead of time to confirm that someone would be at the front desk around 1:30 a.m. The person who answered gave me a short “yes” and nothing more. No mention whatsoever that the front entrance would be completely surrounded by homeless individuals—to the point where my Uber driver refused to let me out because it didn’t feel safe. That alone should tell you everything. I had to leave the area entirely because I didn’t feel comfortable or safe getting out of the car. When I reached out for a refund, I was met with a flat-out refusal and slapped with a “no show” charge, even though I tried to avoid a dangerous situation. I booked through a third-party app, and even when they reached out to the hotel on my behalf, the hotel still refused to refund me a single cent. To make matters worse, I’ve now noticed that bad reviews are being deleted from their listings—likely in an effort to hide how awful the experience truly is. This hotel misleads travelers by pretending to be in a “nice” area and completely fails to warn guests about the real conditions around the property.

Decent enough for the area. Potent smell in building and room. Okay for one night. Have never had staff knock on door to remind us to check out before actual time. Area is sketchy at best. Would opt for another hotel even if inconvenient for intended destination.

Front desk is always super friendly and helpful, room is usually super affordable and comfortable. Refrigerator wasn’t working too well but good enough for cold drinks. neighborhood is pretty active at night, a lot of homeless in the area but everybody keeps to themselves. Just very loud lol my stays are usually pretty comfortable. Solid 7 out of 10 most of my stays

This is an old San Francisco hotel (built in 1909). So, don't expect this to be a modern five star hotel. That said, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the TV worked fine (and lots of channels). The fixtures in the bathroom appeared fairly new. The staff was always helpful. The negatives aren't due to the hotel itself, but rather the fact that many neighborhoods in San Francisco (including the hotel's) now have a lot of homeless people sleeping on the street not far from the hotel entrance. The street was also fairly noisy at night - which did transmit into my room (which faced the street). But if your expectations are reasonable, and consistent with the price you pay, you should be happy.

Bed cover had small stains, NO bathroom in the room which I had never seen in my life! They should advertise as hostal or motel or something else definitely not a 3 star hotel, what is that!?

It’s very simple but that’s all I needed. It gets pretty loud outside with a busy street, so it would be an issue for light sleepers.

The price was very low, so I did not expect much, but there were a couple issues I can't overlook. First, the elevator was out of service the entire stay. We were only on the third floor, but we're an older couple, and it was tiring after a long day of sightseeing. Second, the mini fridge in our room did not work. That was a nuisance since there was also no ice machine. The room itself was clean with newer laminate flooring and decent bedding. The common areas were fairly run down. The neighborhood is a little seedy, but no one bothered us. With that cavear, the location is convenient to BART and Union Square.

The hotel is a brisk walk to the theater, and it made for a decent accommodation. The location isn’t ideal. It’s the Tenderloin. It’s loud, it’s filled with weed smoke, homeless, it’s not pretty. But, for an affordable rate with decent staff, this hotel makes up for what it loses in location. If you don’t make yourself a target, it’s fine. The hotel has security cameras and my room had a functioning deadbolt. The safety aspect isn’t the fault of the hotel. They make it work, and I didn’t feel unsafe during my stay. I wore headphones while I slept to quiet the noise. All good to me. The Warfield is blocks away from nearby BART, even closer to MUNI bus stations. If the Tenderloin isn’t your vibe, you’re certainly able to move around with ease. Lyft was easy here. Elevator is old fashioned with its gate. It probably would benefit from a renovation. I suspect a wheelchair user might have some difficulty. Room wasn’t perfectly clean, but it was good enough. No bedbugs or creatures. Coffee and “breakfast” could have been a bit longer, but it wasn’t important to me. It was basic. Overall, great hotel if you have low expectations. It’s not a Marriott or Hilton, but it’ll get the job done good enough. Will come back if SF holds another similar event. ≈$80/night; I got what I paid for. :)

Me and my family stayed at this property for the weekend we spent for Valentines and upon our arrival we arrived about 2 o’clock in the morning, and we kind of felt unsafe because there were so much homeless people and drug addicts on the block in front of the hotel and pretty much around the area and we almost Was going to book another hotel, but we were like let’s just stick it out and see how it is so we pretty much parked our rental checked into the hotel which was pretty easy. The staff was very pleasant. The hotel is very old so you can’t expect much. It was built in 1907 but you know you pretty much get what you paid for. We got a room with a private bathroom and we stayed on the third floor. The room was OK. Everything was pretty much clean and put in place, but it was very very loud so getting some sleep was hard and then our next two nights there during the day it’s pretty good less homeless hanging around in front of the hotel and then the last two nights it was less homeless folks and less noise But again you know you get what you pay for and the area is pretty common for the homeless folks, other than that our stay was great we were mostly out all day exploring the city.

Please be very careful in booking at this hotel because: 1. It is located in a very dangerous part of San Francisco. Women should NEVER stay her because there are homeless people and addicts loitering around to rob and attach you. 2. Some rooms do NOT even their own BATHROOMS. It is shared. You will need to go out in the corridor to use shared TOILETS. Very dangerous for women. 3. Elevators are from 18th century. You will need to manually drag the iron doors to close them. Fels it will collapse any time while going up or down. 4. For so-called "breakfast", all you will get is a slice of bread. And water. It is close to downtown but a horrible place. Again, NOT safe for women.

Full disclosure: I did not stay at the property. Not being entirely familiar with the location of the property, I booked the hotel based on the rate, drove to it and decided it is not located in an area I feel comfortable walking around in. I decided to forfeit my booking charge and book a hotel closer to downtown proper. The hotel could very well be a quality establishment, at least for the price, but my purpose for needing to be in that location for lodging was not worth the insecurity that of my wellbeing. I hope that my eyes were deceiving me but the logical side of me determined that the cost of two hotels was worth the peace of mind of a comfortable stay. Give them a chance and decide for yourself, maybe it’s just me…

Dirty sheets, too much noise from the outside. Bed was old and made noise
- 3/5
The room was okay for the night. Just wish the bathroom smelled better. It looked clean but had a faint smell of urine. The front desk guy was very nice and helped me with my dress. I would book again if I really need a room in the city. I live in Oakland and only got the room because of nye and I was going to an event at the midway. I figured it would be super expensive to Uber back home. The room saved me money in the long run
- 2/5
The staff was very polite and helpful. However, the hotel is very unclean and unkempt. When we initially checked in, the bed spreads looked like they hadn't been changed in a while. We contacted the front desk and they were quick to change our room. The second room was better than the first but we later noticed the sheets still had strange stains on them. Moreover, the hotel had a strange smell. The road outside the hotel isn't the best but the location generally is decent, super close to the union square.
- 1/5
We chose this since this is affordable and in the city, but we regretted it. Staff is rude. Place is not really beautiful. They also overbooked. Three groups were waiting for them to get checked in only to be told that they had no room available. Not really worth the price.

Although the staff (front desk) was great, the area is terrible. Do not stay here with kids or girls, it’s not safe. There are homeless people and active drug users that linger outside the hotel. Parking is a nightmare and it’s not even safe to park on the street parking. I had to pay $40 to park overnight at a place around the corner. I booked same day and didn’t discover it’s a shared bathroom and shower for the floor between 5 rooms. I tried to cancel with no success, the manager declined my request even after voicing safety concerns. I actually was not able to even speak with him, as they refused to let me speak to him, saying he was not available. I travel with my daughters and nieces and it was the absolute worst case scenario you could imagine as far as safety. I’m still pretty upset that the manager didn’t allow the cancellation request minutes after booking. It lets a really bad impression of customer service. Therefore I would not recommend, especially for safety concerns.

The worst hotel I have ever been to—do not stay here! Don’t waste your money or time. I couldn't sleep all night because of the constant noise: homeless people shouting, cars driving over sewer covers, and so much more. The area is terrible; stepping outside is difficult due to the large homeless presence, and you'll encounter people using drugs and even urinating or defecating around the hotel. This was, by far, my worst hotel experience.
- 5/5
Perfect everything was perfect
- 3/5
The hotel is reasonably clean, but old with some renovations. The location is accessible for activities in the city, but in a less safe neighborhood. It’s a decent hotel at a decent price for travelers on a budget.

Was pretty good for what the price is in this area for one night …. Weather still nice no need for air conditioning or heater … basic

Keep up the good work..

Great value for the location. Neighborhood is a little rough but the lobby is locked so wasn’t concerned.
- 2/5
The staff was great but the place was dirty. There were stains on my bed and on the mattress itself. There were also huge bugs in the bathroom. I recommend getting disposable sheets and bed bug spray if you plan on staying here.
- 1/5
There was no, cleaning like normal hotels do you had to ask for towels and the front desk gave you a stink about it. there was no AC, it hot and so windows needed to be open at all times. Due to this it was super loaud and could verly sleep for the entire stay. Do not stay here if you value a clean quiet stay. I had book via Hotels.com and they charged me the full amount of the stay when I had paid half when booked. Now Hotels.com does not have a good contact information for me to lauch a complain and get my money back. So I have to engage my bank.
- 1/5
The area was full of homeless people. Parking was expensive. The lobby looked nice. The room, on the other hand, was gross. The carpet was dirty and grimey, the beds looked questionable. As soon as I saw a rat scurry across the hallway, I had to leave. I asked for a refund, but they refused. We ended up going somewhere else and I lost several hundred dollars. Lesson learned.
- 3/5
To much noise and if someone misses breakfast there must be something to fix it was disappointiled had to go empty stomach
- 1/5
This area is full of homeless. Its scary to come out at night even for a walk. It seems this area is the worst of all the areas in SF
- 5/5
Happy hotel. Nice staff, and a very comfortable bed. I had a great stay.
- 3/5
The shared bathroom situation took some getting used to but overall my experience here was good. However understand that this hotel is in the middle of the Tenderloin and surrounding areas can get a little rowdy for the unaccustomed.

If you are desperate like us , otherwise I will not recommend at all.

I loved this hotel. It was such a nice surprise. When we pulled up, I was very hesitant. The area surrounding the hotel is not a good area. But the hotel itself interior wise the rooms, the hallways. The reception area were wonderful. I love the old elevator With the cage that was so cool. I don’t remember the staff members names, but the gentleman who worked the morning to afternoon and the gentleman who worked afternoon evening and then the lady who worked overnight were all spectacular! I would stay here again in fact, I’m planning on it because it’s so central to everywhere I needed to go. Again the neighborhood is sketchy. But The hotel is lovely. I love the elevator. I got A room with a private bathroom . Spent my first anniversary with my partner there hopefully we will spend many more there as well. Loved room 305!

I wish I could give this property a higher rating but the surroundings outside brought this rating down. But with that being said the staff are amazing made us feel safe and welcomed. The location was close to public transportation. I only wish that this hotel was one block over as once you got onto the next block the streets and sidewalks are much cleaner.

Close to everything you want to see in San Francisco, very affordable stuff was very nice I had a great time with my husband will be definitely coming back
