Reviews
The Touchstone Hotel is a popular choice for travelers in the San Francisco area, praised for its cleanliness, comfortable rooms, and friendly, helpful staff. However, concerns about the surrounding area due to the increased homeless population and drug use are common. The hotel's pricing is attractive given its amenities and services.
- Clean hotel and rooms
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Surrounding area conditions due to homelessness and drug use
- Noise issues from other guests or the surrounding area

There is a lady in lobby. She was always helpful and smiling. A little old
- 4.5/5
Nice room. The shower has good water pressure. The fan on the ceiling works well to make it more comfortable. The window I had overlooks an internal building space, which was perfect for me, because it meant that with the curtains closed, it was dark enough to be able to sleep during the day (jetlag). It was also quiet, with no noise from the street. The staff was nice and they store your luggage when you check out, if you like. The location is relatively close to a Bart station. There is 24 hour coverage at the front desk. And there is a 24-hour breakfast place across the street. The shower head cannot be taken off, it is one of those that cannot be removed. There is a strange smell in the hallway and room. I think it might be old wood? Not sure, but you stop noticing it quickly enough, so it was no problem.

Great location near to Union square. Loved the style of the hotel and the attached 1950s era diner. Clean rooms, wonderful hot shower, comfy bed - the hotel had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The staff were all really friendly, helpful and professional. Really enjoyed breakfast in the diner! A lovely stay - would stay again.
- 5/5
The staff are great and very frendly people, very helpful. Breakfast at the David restaurant was also top notch. Parking I belive is better not to rent a car since private parking lots are very expensive in SF.
- 1/5
The hotel is in a very bed shape, smelling bed, dirty bedding, the shower was clogged and water never drained completely. I changed three rooms at check in before finding one in a decent condition to spend the night.
- 4.5/5
It was a good, no-frills hotel in the middle of San Francisco. It was exactly what I wanted. The room was a little small, that's all, but that is what I was expecting.
- 5/5
There was an asian woman that works in the morning and I just wanted to give her a huge shoutout-- honestly some of the best customer service I've ever received in my travels! Room was clean and I felt safe. I love how the door to the entrance locks. Everything was great about this stay!
- 5/5
Everything, especially the people.

The location of this hotel is excellent, 2 minutes from Union Square!
- 5/5
TBH I was expecting way different experience due to the price but it was great…. I booked the queen room and it was good, walls can get a bit of cleaning but overall the room was clean… This hotel will be ideal if it has water boilers in the room to make tea and coffee… The location is ideal and safe, just don’t go the opposite way of the Union Square it is not really cool over there :/ The staff is adorable and great ppl ❤️ Thank you for making our stay great
- 4.5/5
I enjoyed the place. Maybe it is not a perfect one, but it fits perfect with the idea of a genuine old San Francisco. If you are visiting San Francisco to take cable car to get to the Fisherman's Wharf, see the sea lions and take a boat trip to Alcatraz, you must stay in this place, which looks light it has been conserved since 1950s. Lack of plastic, a lot of things made of metal (iron or brass), breakfast served at the counter in the nearby restaurant, which looks like the one from Back to the Future, part I, all are a must have part of any tourist's experience. The administrator/owner (I didn't ask, sorry!) was a nice person, caring for its clients. Lack of air conditioning, just a cooling fan in the ceiling, can make sleeping difficult during the hot season. But it was quite comfortable for the mid March.
- 3/5
The staff were outstanding-very courteous and helpful. The room was small and clean. The bathroom was a bit on the dingy side (tub needs a reglazing, windows and their locks were flimsy-especially considering that there is a fire escape right outside connecting the different rooms and floors). Lots of street noise - especially through the bathroom window. If you don't need anything too fancy and bring ear plugs, you should do alright. The surrounding area is a little sketchy regarding people with apparent mental health and drug issues. It seems fine during the day but I wouldn't want to walk around for too long after dark and I probably wouldn't want to stay there as a solo female traveler due to the window situation.

The room was clean and there was enough space. The staff was amazing, very friendly and helpfull. When leaving always have a good day etc so it was amazing.
- 1/5
It’s not a three star hotel
- 4/5
The room was tiny, but very clean. Housekeeping did an amazing job cleaning the room. The front staff were very helpful and always polite . The building is very old, the elevator is kinda scary, and the restaurant is depressing, very empty and old. In general I would stay here again if I’m traveling on a budget.
- 4/5
Excellent location in central downtown SF. Hotel was very clean, staff very friendly. Safe area with lots of shopping and dining options within walking distance. Parking nearby was easy and affordable. Would definitely recommend and visit again.
- 5/5
There was no noise level , the AC was great and room was hot (It was cold during my stay so it was fine) 👍 very comfortable bed Would Definitely recommend !

Parking around the hotel was hard but the hotel was very nice
- 4/5
Old hotel that is near to Union Square and Macys, parking staff are terrible.
- 4/5
If you're in San Francisco near Union Square or The Theater District, you gotta try The Touchstone. The rooms are small, but not unlike all the older hotels in the city. I had a small issue upon check in and it was immediately solved by way of an upgrade. It's waking distance to errands, stores, and right next door is one of the city's classic diners, Davids, which offers a 10% discount for guests at the hotel. Very nice stay, and would happily stay again when seeing a show.
- 5/5
Safe and clean!
- 3/5
During my stay in my hotel room there was a live cockroach and i told it to the guy in the reception table and they move me to another room but near the road so it was noisy. The staff were all very nice.
- 5/5
Location was close to everything we wanted to do but see. Place was clean and comfortable. Price was right for the older property. Would stay there again.
- 5/5

Clean was ok
- 5/5
The people were very friendly and took great care of us. The room was a bit warm but we opened the window. It felt like a European hotel; lots of charm, not standard, not fancy.
- 4/5
Very friendly staff. Clean room with street views. Our 1 night stay was good.
- 5/5
Wonderful stay!!! It’s a really convenient location for tours and activities. Also the front desk staff is amazing. Very friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoyed everything about this visit. Thank you so much to Touchstone staff.
- 4/5
Rooms were clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We just got unlucky when the city turned off hot water for one day, but the hotel worked to to fix it.
- 5/5
For the price I paid, the hotel was excellent. The staff were friendly. The room was clean and has all the necessary amenities.
- 2/5
The area was terrible, there is no loading zone to drop off luggage so my car got towed. Didn’t feel very safe walking with all my luggage to the nearest parking garage. The room was fine but there wasn’t a refrigerator. The staff was very nice though
- 5/5
Clean with a friendly and helpful staff.
- 5/5
My experience at the Touchstone Hotel was nice and comfortable. The room had a welcoming, fresh smell. The beds could be a bit softer, but overall comfort was good. The experience really depends on the room you book. The staff was pretty chill and very responsive when service was needed. The entire building felt secure, with door codes and key card access, which made me feel safe in the city that never sleeps—literally. If you’re looking to stay near Union Square at a great rate, this is a solid option.
- 5/5
Staff was very helpful and friendly like always. Rooms are always clean and very comfortable.
- 4/5
The room was clean, staff was kind and friendly and the location was pretty good !! Transit and bus stops near by and stores like macys are like a two minute walk.
- 5/5
I had a terrific stay at Touchstone Hotel. The room was spotless, and the staff was courteous. I highly recommend this hotel!
- 5/5
It was wonderful having a little heater AND a ceiling fan. Made the room very comfortable!
- 5/5
The room was spotless. The only think I was change is the tv, it didn’t have many channels overall it was a great experience and loved stay there
- 5/5
I had an incident with my initial room which the staff was unaware. However, PJ and Juliet were both apologetic and resolved the situation quickly and to my satisfaction. Both employees were professional and personable and made my stay something positive to remember. Looking forward to staying here again.
- 5/5
Built in 1925, this wonderful hotel is straight out of a Humphrey Bogart movie. I highly recommend it for a short overnight stay, as I. When attending a show. Very clean & well maintained, but not modernized. Don’t be offput by its single-front entrance. The rooms haven’t been upgraded, but they are clean and comfortable, obviously small but cozy. Clean bathrooms with a bathtub. The rooms have enough power outlets to charge all my gadgets. It’s located directly opposite the Curran theater on Geary Street, and just two blocks from Union Square. Parking is provided around the corner on Taylor by the Post-Taylor Garage. Very convenient. The hotel gives guests a coupon for $35 per 24 hours. You can’t get cheaper. A classic Diner next door serves breakfast. The Thais restaurant two doors down has a great dinner menu.
- 5/5
Staff was great!
- 3/5
The room was in good condition. It was nothing fancy, just a room you would expect from a 3 star hotel. It was comfortable and in a good location. It felt safe and you could walk to close-by restaurants, shops, and Union Square. The Asian receptionist was very helpful, and a real sweetheart. I would stay there again.
- 1/5
First of all, yes, I understood this was a budget hotel and yes, I kept my expectations low. I’ve stayed at many and never been as disappointed as I was here. The rancid smell is overwhelming as soon as you walk in the door and permeates throughout the hotel including the room. I found several bugs, and woke up very itchy all over my body. The subpar conditions really are not acceptable and certainly not worth the little you’ll save by staying here.
- 3/5
Its close to everything , clean
- 4/5
While the hotel was definitely ever bit budget they tell you;)--the staff was really warm and helpful. The key card reader had some issues, but the staff works well and knows the quirks. I just rested my head here a night on my way to up to Portland, and it was all I needed. Warm shower and a bed(even if it wasn't the fluffiest thing in the world), WiFi, and the experience was just fine. Do be aware you hear street noise just outside, but my night actually wasn't bad for that.
- 5/5
If you're looking for a humble stay with everything you'll need, this is the place. Staff was awesome. Got a discount to the restaurant attached. Walkable to some pretty good restaurants and stores.
- 5/5
Clean room and staffs are very nice and good secure WiFi.. no load street road noise in the room…
- 3/5
Had to park down the street to have a cheaper price. This street had a few homeless people on it throughout the day. The temperatures at night got down to 50⁰ and this hotel only has space heaters.
- 4/5
No shampoo, bar soap the rest of the days until we asked for it.
- 3/5
Location was convenient. Spartan. No ice, no fridge, no safe. To its credit, the bathroom and shower were clean and comfortable. The shower had great pressure and hot water. The bed was hard as a rock, no side sleeping possible. Noway could 2 people fit in my “petit” room. The pull-down “desk” was barely big enough for my laptop.
- 5/5
The perfect place in a great area, no parking, no AC, just be aware, I’d stay again!
- 1/5
Parking was expensive. The breakfast was horrible. The beds were so small. I only weigh 166 pounds and I couldn’t even move in the shower horrible horrible horrible
- 5/5
Clean
- 5/5
The hotel is well located and I felt safe walking arround the area, the staff is very nice, the rooms are small but for one person it was fine
- 4/5
Staff was very good.
- 5/5
The bathroom was nice and clean.
- 2/5
The hotel is very close to downtown, but I think that’s the only good thing about it
- 5/5
Easy check-in, minimal but had essentials and very clean. Great option for a quick trip
- 5/5
The hotel concierge, Juliet was amazing and knew everyone by name.
- 3/5
if you are a FEMALE SOLO TRAVELER, DO NOT STAY HERE. The owner, who is also female ANNOUNCED my room number OUT LOUD at the front desk. out of all my travels, i have NEVER had any desk attendant shout out my room number. Although there was only 1 other male customer at the counter, it shows how careless she was. BEING SAFE means alot to me and it should to you as well.
- 4/5
Front staff were EXTREMELY helpful & accommodating. ( highlight of our stay) Place was little run down and had an unpleasant strong scent. But overall enjoyed our stay.
- 4/5
Ronnie was an excellent help in getting us checked in, providing parking, dining, & local sites info. The female clerk working the morning of our check out was indifferent and not pleasant. Although conveniently located, the cost of the parking garage with ‘valet service’ was ridiculous! They wouldn’t even bring our car to the front of the hotel. I had to leave my 89 y/o mother waiting in the lobby while I retrieved the car. $70 for 2 nights was too much!
- 1/5
Old, run down
- 5/5
Very good
- 5/5
Good location
- 3/5
No free parking as Expedía ad, no a/c, no battle of water in the apartment, restaurant for breakfast open too late, pillows smell bad , small bed for two guest, no really happy are all.
- 5/5
good
- 5/5
Clean hotel, clean room, private bathroom, friendly staff (Juliet is the best!), and affordable. This is not a 5 star hotel, but for those on a budget, I’m not sure you can get much better!!
- 5/5
Staff was friendly, room was small but clean. Valet parking right around the corner.
- 3/5
Pluses: good location in theater district, friendly staff, cheap. Downsides: no mini-fridge, no drinking glasses, no washcloths (!)
- 4/5
It was a clean room in a central location of SF.
- 4/5
It was a good place to stay for short stay.
- 5/5
Located close to some great entertainment options, rooms are dated but clean, staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Great value
- 5/5
The customer service was fantastic. A great place to stay if you are visiting the City by the Bay.
- 3/5
No A/C. so had to rely on the fan that was around the hotel hallway. and only one elevator overall. There was also no ventilation fan from the bathroom. The workers was very attentive which is great.
- 4/5
Juliet was such a pleasure. She made sure we were satisfied.
- 4/5
Very clean and friendly staff. Very walkable.
- 4/5
The issue is that there is no AC, check-in and checkout times are too late and too early.
- 5/5
very nice lady at the front, said hi to me by my first name every morning and made sure i was safe when getting into my uber.
- 5/5
Room was the size of my own bedroom, almost panicked because I thought it had no personal bathroom when we first arrived but it was behind a door, didn’t have a heater or air conditioner in the room just a ceiling fan BUT found out we didn’t need either room was just right and weather in San Feansixo was good. No window to open for fresh air But that was okay too, fan did fine. Ron was a big help very nice made us feel at home. The dinner next door was awesome for breakfast, felt secure and safe staying here and it was very near everything we needed to get around the city…I def would not drive around myself.
- 4/5
Location and facility good but got to clean up the homeless. Great deal for the money
- 5/5
Very good stay here. Front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. Clean room and bathroom. All around good.
- 4/5
Great stay for a a short 3 nights. Room was clean staff were always nice.
- 3/5
Staff were amazing but it was not how it was advertised
- 2/5
The furniture and decor of the rooms was outdated, and the surrounding area is noisy and unsafe, especially at night but during the day too. Thankfully, they keep the front door of the hotel locked at all times, and the staff is very nice. However, I had to sleep with noise cancelling headphones on because otherwise I would be woken up at 3am each night by people yelling in the streets, sirens, and loud sounds of vehicles racing up and down the street.
- 5/5
Really great for the price and has all the bare necessities we needed, was pretty worried about the noise and how small the room might be based on the reviews, but it was fine and not as crazy small as expected (for the 2 bedroom room). Room was cleaned each day which helped a lot as well, and it was not too loud at night. It is right down the street from union square, close to Powell station which was really convenient. There were a lot of homeless people in front but that may be expected. There's no fridge in the room but they still let us use the fridge in the downstairs restaurant and staff were so kind and helpful.
- 5/5
My room was awesome, staff were awesome. Noisy outside but not heard in my room. Surrounding area has a lot of homeless I was ok with this as I’m used to it but if travelling with my son. I’d live further down the street. Not the hotels fault
- 5/5
Spent 2 nights. Older hotel. Clean. Nastalgic. Staff were super friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Staff were awesome and room was clean and comfortable
- 5/5
The most kind staff. Would definitely stay again.
- 3/5
Clean but very minimal without AC. Trashcan is only in the bathroom. It says breakfast is offered on Expedia but it’s not; they only give you a 15% off coupon. Key card is very susceptible to malfunctioning (by even a short contact with your phone), which I don’t understand. I understand because the price is cheap but they should’ve been honest about the breakfast, because that was the reason I picked this place.
- 5/5
Staff was very friendly and communicated very well and quickly.
- 5/5
The staff was truly amazing, informative, helpful and kind.
- 5/5
I stayed for 4 nights and it was wonderful from start to finish. Big shoutout to Juliet at the front desk, she is amazing !
- 5/5
Excellent
- 4/5
Very convenient! Average room condition, very friendly staffs!
- 4/5
NO REFRIGETATOR
- 2/5
The advertising photos doesn't reflect the actual conditions of the rooms.
- 3/5
The hotel room was generally clean and the lady at the reception desk was very helpful. However, for the price we paid, I think I expected more amenities like a mini fridge and more than one power outlet. Also, the shelf above the bathroom sink was too low, so I had some issues using the faucet.
- 5/5
I was a great stay, everything was as shown by the app. The employees were very helpful and friendly.
- 5/5
I was a great stay, everything was as shown by the app. The employees were very helpful and friendly.
- 5/5
loved it! staff was so incredible, very quaint!
- 5/5
Excellent stay - clean rooms
- 4/5
Basic but comfortable. On a safe but rough block in area with many hotels.
- 3/5
Convenient place. Has all basic requirements and staff was polite.
- 5/5
Rooms were fine for short trip where you are very busy, had everything you needed, as well as clean and comfortable. The Filipino lady (sorry I cannot place her name at the moment) was spectacular! Kind and the definition of hospitable. Miss her already and her warm smile and conversation. Breakfast (David's) was amazing. Just a normal; eggs, hash browns, bacon & sausage, toast - guy here though. Went there twice with the 15% discount for staying with Touchstone.
- 5/5
The major problem with that hotel is it does not have a lobby.
- 1/5
Good
- 3/5
The location was amazing. The rooms are tiny, but we knew what to expect. There doesnt appear to be any source of heating in the room. No vents. They offered a space heater but i opted for another blanket. The sink only emitted a dribble of water. The staff however was super friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Convenient walking distance from Union Square and Muni.
- 4/5
Good price, facilities and unbication. The staff was really nice. Simple room but clean and comfortable
- 4/5
Overall a pretty good place to stay for a weekend trip.
- 4/5
Super convenient for all entertainment and shopping and the bart perfect location. I will definitely stay there again.
- 3/5
The staff were fantastic. The property is older with loud plumbing and thin walls. Bath wouldn't plug and the showerakes a clunky sound when you use the cold water. The bed was like sleeping on a table with pancakes for pillows. Staff did get me a normal pillow.
- 5/5
Nice room under $200.
- 4/5
They should keep a Common Microwave in every floor as there is no Microwave or Fridge in rooms.
- 5/5
Staff was courteous and helpful. The room is small but that is expected and it was more than enough for having a place to rest, wash up, keep my things while exploring SF. They also have a back room that's locked to store luggage and even a rental bike I had. There's a diner attached with a discount for hotel guests with pretty decent options. Everything was clean and well kept. I would return in future trips to SF.
- 4/5
Front desk staff is very nice and friendly. There is an odd smell in the hallways of the hotel, but wasn’t as noticeable in the room itself. There isn’t air conditioning in the room, but wasn’t a problem for me in May. A basic hotel without any frills, but a good deal for San Fran.
- 4/5
Great location. Room was very clean but it is an old building with old pipes. Very friendly staff with a great diner next door. Would stay again when in San Francisco.
- 5/5
Great central location and very friendly staff.
- 5/5
Great spot. Unreal price. Highly recommend
- 3/5
It’s fine. Bad area though.
- 5/5
Staff was extremely helpful and made the trip as comfortable as possible
- 5/5
I forgot her name but the lady in the front was soo nice will definitely be back because Of her
- 5/5
Very friendly staff, especially lady at front desk during day shift!
- 3/5
The staff was friendly and polite. The hotel was basic didn’t even have air conditioning and the are was not a good area. If you want to be harassed by lots of crack heads take your chances. There is a reason the price is so low.
- 4/5
I like more
- 3/5
You get what you pay for. The room was clean and tidy, but very basic. The only big negative is that you have no control over heating and cooling in the room other than a ceiling fan. With the wide variations of climate in SF, I think this could be a problem at times. During my one-night stay, it was not.
- 4/5
I only wish that there was a refrigerator and microwave
- 4/5
Great! No complaints!
- 4/5
Everything was so good
- 4/5
Stayed for one night only. More expensive than other hotels nearby!
- 2/5
rooms don’t have heaters they give you a portable heater, which is not safe. It was no phone in the room. You have to come downstairs all away from six floor.
- 4/5
Great location across the street from the Curran Theater and just a couple blocks from Union Square. Friendly staff. The room was on the small side when compared to major chains, but clean and efficient. Would stay again.
- 5/5
The employees were really professional and friendly. I definitely recommend this hotel and I’ll come back next time.
- 4/5
None
- 2/5
Just unimpressive in every way
- 5/5
Staff was very friendly, and the building has an old school charm like the rest of the city. For the budget, no complaints at all. We didn’t have enough time to check out their attached diner but it seemed really cute!
- 5/5
Great for the value and amazing staff, especially Julieta! The diner was nice too!
- 4/5
Good centrally located hotel 2 blocks from transit and street cars. No frills (microwave, fridge in room)but clean and comfortable and couldn't beat the price!
- 3/5
It was ok until the last day. My room flooded because of person above me. They did not switch my room. Water dropped from ceiling in bathroom all night. The lady at front desk was quite helpful and friendly.
- 5/5
The hotel is very nice for the amount paid. It was clean, the staff was helpful, and everything worked. So completely recommend the hotel if you want a budget option near Union Square. That said, you should know that Union square has become a dirty part of town. I saw feces all over the streets and lots of stores have closed.
- 4/5
Great spot for a solo traveler spending a few nights in the city. Great location with a lot within walking distance
- 5/5
It’s a quiet little place as I booked a small single room. Only thing I would recommend for the property is that they should provide Atleast water bottles in the room.
- 5/5
Good all around
- 4/5
The location is superb and you can walk to many of the attractions. The staffs are incredibly helpful and friendly. While the room is a bit small, it is comfortable and quiet. I enjoyed my stay and had very restful sleep during my two nights stay in the hotel.
- 4/5
Nice spot! Would stay again
- 5/5
Clean, quiet, friendly staff
- 1/5
There were bugs in the bathroom, the power plugs were not all working, there was no heater/air conditioning, and no waste basket to throw garbage. Overall disappointing
- 5/5
Good place for sleep if you sleep deep. Old building but well maintained. Reception staff friendly
- 5/5
The place is in a very good location and the owners of hotel are very helpful, peacefull. Let us in the bigger room just because it was empty that day, didint charge of it. Proposed to keep bags so much time as you need before check-in and after check-out! It was also for free. Cheked-in 1 hour before the time. Very polite and gentle people.
- 5/5
Lovely, helpful staff who went out of their way to ensure I had a good stay on my one night layover in San Francisco. My room was lovely and quiet and the only issue I had was that it was very cold as no one had placed the room heater in the room. But otherwise all was great and the staff kindly stored my bag for the day before I returned to the airport. Thank you!
- 2/5
I have to give props to team though - 24/7 locked & manned door and most staff quite friendly and helpful. Elevator was functional.
- 4/5
Room was as-expected. Just the basics with no frills, but looked like the photos and everything in the room was clean. The hallways and stairwells are definitely outdated and have a unique smell, but for a low-cost room in this area, it was sufficient. The staff are incredibly friendly and supportive.
- 2/5
completely old system
- 5/5
Liked the staff there, very friendly
