Perfect place and location to stay!

Staff is very nice to accommodate a room change because it was so noisy. But then the second room had some heating problems. It is an old hotel that has bathrooms remodeled. But the ability to open windows also mean it is noisy.

This property was amazing. The air conditioning was top tier, the room was clean, the staff were above and beyond but BE WARNED the parking is terrible. It has nothing to do with the Cartwright, and everything to do with San Francisco. Would 100% stay here again, but just make sure you plan out your parking in advance or else you will end up dropping $100+ for the weekend three blocks down.

Stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed my stay. Convient location 2 blocks away from union square, 7 min walk to china town, 10 min drive from pier 39. Very old hotel and extremely small rooms but you get what you pay for. Staff was really nice. Only downfall is our room didn’t have a fridge or microwave.

Near Union Square. We have stayed at The Herbert and The Stratford, but the Cartwright is by far one of the cleanest, friendliest, and well located OLD SF hotels. It's an old building with a slow elevator but it's clean and charming. The front desk folks really knew how to serve the customer. 5 star customer service.

The building and the rooms are very old but the staff were so friendly and helpful. Good central location. The bathroom in my room was so tiny I could not even wash my face over the sink. Really needs an update.

Only stayed for 3 nights but was super nice and clean when we arrived! The bathroom is a bit small but overall I had slept really well!

Receptionist was very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely and clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. Loved the fact you could get tea and coffee in the morning, a nice touch. Great location.

Staff were great on arrival snd everyday. Helped out with parking so it was easy and seamless. Room was very clean and perfect for me. Coffee offered every morning at 06-1000. Loved location!! Close to walking everywhere. This is a GREAT place to stay— SF top marks!! I travel a it, so rarely leave this hood of review!

Lovely historic hotel ! We got a free upgrade ! Very comfortable and the staff very friendly . The lobby is so comfortable , our flight was delayed so we spent some time there .

Location to downtown is the only good thing about this hotel. I booked two rooms, a king room and room with two twin beds. Both room were dusty and dirty. The twin room didn’t have any body wash or shampoo in the shower and they were out of stock and couldn’t replace. The king room wash out of conditioner and body wash. The outlets in both rooms did not work. The walking path on one side of the bed in the king room was literally 6” wide. The bathroom in the king room was a closet. When sitting on the toilet, my knees would hit the sink. Speaking of sink, don’t even think about trying to use it in the king room. It’s about the size of a man’s hand. They had a single glass shelf over the sink and it was so low, you barely could wash your hands, much less try to spit your toothpaste out. I had to leave a day early due to being called back to work, I let them know two days before I would have checked out and they wouldn’t refund my unused day. After some discussion, they were going to refund one day on the twin room, but at the end of the day, they never did. There are no facilities in the hotel, they serve coffee and tea in the morning and that’s it. Not even an ice machine was available, oh and no mini fridge’s in the rooms either. I WILL NOT EVER STAY HERE AGAIN NOR RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE, not even my enemy.

I was delightfully surprised. After experiencing a shit show while trying to stay at the Mosser hotel, the Cartwright hotel staff seemed like angels. It wasn’t the most space but it also wasn’t the worst. The kind Reception from the staff honestly, just made it better.

The corner room was extremely small and the hallway was only a couple of feet wide. I think that the building was built in the early 1900s. some of the amenities, such as the window blinds had a very old chain to raise and close the blinds. It’s not a 3 star hotel at all- but the beds were comfy and the room was quiet

You get free coffee/tea in the morning in the lobby which is a nice relaxing area to sit and work if you need to.The hotel is in an excellent location in the downtown area and very central, plenty of shops and restaurants/cafes nearby.

I would have loved a mini-fridge in the room, but getting a bucket of ice from the lobby was an easy work-around.

The hotel was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The hotel is old of course but since it was so clean, it didn't matter. It is definitely very loud at night and I thankfully had ear plugs.

The hotel is very outdated and run-down. The photos on Booking.com do not match the actual condition of the rooms at all. Our room looked terrible — scratched walls, a smelly bedroom, and everything felt old and poorly maintained. The listing was very misleading and made us book under false expectations. Parking was also not included in the price, and on top of that, it was located separately from the hotel, which was very inconvenient.

If I knew someone looking for a budget hotel in this area I would for sure recommend this place. Some of the hotels in this area are run down and scuzzy. This one was reasonably nice.

The second floor room facing the street was super loud and i struggled to sleep without waking up often due to cars, ambulances, trash trucks, etc… it’s a nice hotel in a great location. I would definitely stay there again but would probably chose a room not facing the Main Street.

The staff at the Cartwright are quick to take care of any problem that arises. I had a broken shower head and they were quick to move me to another room. No hesitation Great staff, always consistent and courteous. I will be a regular Very pleased.

The room is tired way past a renovation. First, the windows should be double-paned. The noice outside, even with earplugs is loud. Very loud, even on the 9 th floor! Not a good staycation for me. Overall, the room was clean and pillows were good. The best part is the Filipino staff! Always helpful and smiling! Not sure if I’ll give it another try.

As a traveling nursing mother, i greatly appreciated the accommodation of bringing up a mini fridge for my breastmilk upon request and helping me print out music I needed for an audition. Extremely friendly and helpful. There were a few outlets that did not work but the staff promptly came up to help me find the working outlets and made note to fix them. It might not be the newest facility with the most amenities but it is very clean, remodeled beautifully and the staff make the stay excellent. I did not get names but everyone was so helpful. I really do like this hotel. I'm sad I won't be in it next week as their prices are insane b/c of a conference coming in. Otherwise this has become my go-to for SF travels.

Located right in Union Square, it’s the perfect spot for exploring San Francisco. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming to me and my daughter, and the hotel itself is beautifully maintained. The parking garage is absolutely worth it super convenient and easy access to every mode of transportation. Big kudos to the owners and team for running such a great place!

The man at the front desk said we would be charged one night, but he would notify his management that we should receive a refund for the remaking few nights. We then checked out and went to an amazing (truly pet friendly) hotel, the Stay Pineapple. I filed a claim with Expedia, who did try to help us. Unfortunately, the Cartwright'management refused to issue any refund. If you have a dog, go elsewhere!

This is a tired property with finishes refreshed. While the bathrooms and some surfaces seem to have been updated, the walls/doors/woodwork are in mostly dreadful condition. The bed was decent. There is no ac (usually not needed in SF) but opening the windows exposes you to the usual nighttime screaming and shouting that is common to the street life on Sutter Street. The front desk staff were fine, but the extended family hanging out at the tables near the front desk may or may not be to your taste. Coffee machine in room did not work properly, the pods exploded and created a big mess. So, in the end, I got a reasonable good sleep, but would not recommend this hotel.

Our room was clean and comfortable. Luckily I have more mobility than a few months ago or there could have been an accident. The bathroom is so small and cramped it was a bit frightening to get in and out of the shower. Everything we needed was there- it just took some contortion to get around the toilet and into the shower. Sorry to be so picky, but I had hip replacement 2 years ago and I would have been extremely frightened to navigate that bathroom a few months ago.

Unfortunately our room was really dirty. Bathtub was moldy and towels were actually really filthy. We checked I pretty late and as tired as I was I didn’t think it was appropriate to be disturbing anyone that late. We stuck with it but we will never be back.

The location is very convenient — close to everything you need. The staff were great and very helpful. However, the building itself could really use some major improvements.

Terrible staff

Terrible nasty unsafe dirty

We made a mistake and accidentally got a room at Union Square Plaza hotel. It was a nightmare and we quickly changed to the Cartwright. So much better! It had A/C for one. It’s older but it’s kept up well. The rooms are smaller and somewhat in need of updating but compared to what we came from it was paradise! Got us in early and everything was fairly enjoyable. If you’re looking for a place to stay downtown that won’t cost $5k, you should consider it.

My room was the 303, perfect! It was in the back of the hotel. I couldn't hear any noise coming from the street or the traffic, I had amazing 5 nights of sleep. The room was super clean, comfortable, with a good space and the bed was something else! I really recommend this hotel if you wanna have a good time in San Francisco. It is close by everything, the cable car just cross right in the corner.

The room was spacious enough for the age of the building (keep this is mind, everything is smaller in old city buildings). Housekeeping came in every day and left the room looking great. The location is the best part; close to a BART station and with many bus lines nearby. There are many businesses within walking distance. Great common areas, but some of the rooms had mold that was visible on the walls of the room and the bathroom. This was an issue for me and after communicating with the staff, they moved me to a different room which was a much better option. The air conditioning unit in the first room also needed some cleaning as well as the windows. The staff is very friendly and always willing to help if you need something.

Staff was accommodating when we needed a late check out. Very comfy bed, a lot of towels and the body wash smelled good! We ate at nearby Jasmins and their chicken katsu was delicious, the women there were very sweet also.

Thin walls. Even for a weeknight it was a bit noisy even though I asked for a quiet room in the back of the building. I could hear all of my neighbors.

Arrived at the hotel past midnight due to a late flight. The staff was so kind as to keep the door unlocked for my arrival. Got in the room and immediately fell asleep on the bed. Woke up the next morning and realized that my head had been on a blood stained pillow case the entire night. That’s kind of gross, to be quite honest.

This hotel is walking distance from the train station and multiple restaurants. The room was small but clean and perfect for one person.

The hall and my room smelled very musty, so much so that I was worried that there was mold. I bought Lysol from the Walgreens across the street but it didn't help. There were black spots at the base of the shower and around the window AC unit. I took out the filter screen of the AC unit and it was filthy. When I showed it to the 2 employees at the front desk, one was rude saying he had no idea when he could get me a new one because he'd have to call "engineering". The second man was nicer, took the filter, and said he'd take care of it. When I returned to my room later that day, there was a filter in the AC unit again. I don't know if it had just been vacuumed or if it was new. Regardless, I didn't use it again. The first night, it was so noisy outside in the neighborhood that I had to turn on the AC fan to try to sleep (white noise) but the fan was so loud that sleeping was quite the challenge. The room was small but what I liked were the shower and towels. Every employee except the one mentioned above was very friendly. The price was right, but I would only suggest people looking for a youth hostel type accommodation to stay here.

I stayed for a solo trip for a weekend and it was the perfect fir for me. I loved the little coffee, tea and water station they had for their guests and the staff was very friendly. The rooms are small and clean. The walls are thin and you hear other guests but it was still okay and didn't impact my sleep.

Hotel needs to be updated. It has a great location near Union Square, the cable car and Chlnatown all of them at walking distance. Tai at the reception was very professional and helpful. She made you feel very welcome. Price was very affordable for SFO standards.

It’s a pretty old building, but it’s well-maintained and clean. They had free coffee and organic tea in the morning, which was nice.

There is no view. The rooms are so small you can barely walk. No parking $40. A day and a block and a half walk. Room view was a destroyed brick wall 10 ft away. Felt like I was staying in a New York Alley.

Older building that has been updated and provided the basics - clean, comfortable bed, small but nice bathroom, darkening shades, tv, closet, suitcase stand, alarm clock, wall heater, no refrigerator, elevator, coffee in room or downstairs, large downstairs lounging areas. Our room overlooked the street; however, it was pretty quiet - even with activity on street like car being towed, some blinking red lights, pedestrian traffic at 7/11. Parking available for fee a short block away.

The place is clean but old the rooms are quiet small and generally the pictures looks better than it is the best part of all is the location one bloco to the major shopping malls

The check in staff were really friendly and welcoming. First impression walking in was that it was really clean. The parking garage was 2 minutes walking distance from the hotel so it was pretty convenient. Had no issues with the room except that the bathroom was a little small and the sink was inconvenient when trying to wash my face. Overall you get a pretty nice experience considering what you are paying and you are in walking distance of a lot of cool establishments. I recommend staying here and I would stay here again.

Very comfortable bed. Good location. The room was pretty small but so was the price I paid and it was completely fine for 1-2 travelers. The lobby is nice lots of places to set up a computer. Staff was very nice.

Beautiful lobby and lounge with plenty of workspaces. Bathroom had a nice deep tub. Only complaint is it’s pretty noisy outside even with windows shut. People yelling, busses, honking, loud music, etc. sometimes all the way until 2am.

The front desk staff consistently had 2 to 3 people present, but they acted as if they were each working solo. Any time assistance could have been offered, they seemed too preoccupied with chatting among themselves and came across as bothered by basic guest interactions. They appeared very self-involved and more focused on their own conversations than helping guests. One evening, I called to check if I had left an item behind. The phone was answered with a flat, almost annoyed “hello” with no mention of the hotel name, which made me wonder if I had even called the right number. When I inquired about the item, I was immediately told “no” without a pause, the kind of quick response that made it hard to believe they actually checked. During checkout, I was clearly struggling with multiple bags. Despite three staff members being present, one simply shouted from the desk, “Are you checking out?” Not one of them offered a bell cart or asked if I needed assistance. The same happened at check-in. I had plenty of luggage, but no offer of help. On my way out, I saw at least two unused bell carts just sitting in the small lobby. It was disappointing that no one had thought to offer one at either point in my stay. That said, the rooms themselves were great, and housekeeping was excellent. The woman who cleaned our room was kind, helpful, and went above and beyond when we needed extra items. We made sure to leave her a tip for her wonderful service

For a two day trip this was pretty good! pros: ease of check-in, location, beautiful lobby, elevator, house-keeping. the only thing that threw me for a loop was that there appeared to be some hair stuck to the window of the bathroom door, the AC unit was not very functional, and the room felt damp. The property was worth the price, but definitely some things to keep in mind when booking.

This hotel is just a few steps from Union Square and the cable cars. Would come back again if ever back in SF.

It was a very old building that clearly had a lot of history, which was interesting. The rooms were clean, but the bathrooms were incredibly small. The staff at the front desk were rude, gave me the wrong room when I paid additional for a bigger one, and didn't apologize afterwards. I found clothes belonging to a previous customer in the closet, which was a bit off putting. Overall, I wouldn't stay here again because there are so many other hotels nearby, and many in similar price ranges that have better service. I'd recommend the property hire front desk staff that are more polite, aren't overtly hostile to customers, and don't whisper snide comments to each other when a customer is standing right there. It wasn't worth my time addressing it to them, but thought I'd mention it for other customers that may not take kindly to it.

I booked this hotel because it said there was on site parking with limited height restrictions or offside parking for $35 a night when I got to the hotel they said there was no on-site parking. I had to pay $35 a night for offsite parking.

The folks at the desk, while ultimately helpful and nice, didn't feel all that interested in us or making us feel welcome. That was especially true Friday evening at check-in and later that evening and Saturday evening. Sunday evening desk guy was nicer.

Good value hotel in downtown SF with a 40$ parking fee per day. Good location and pet friendly! The room is a little small for 2 people and a dog, but it's clean and the bed was comfortable. The disadvantage is there is no fridge.

Very well located in Union Square. Rooms were very nice in clean. There’s a 24 hour café right around the corner if you want a late night food. It can be loud outside at times. Other than that it’s a great place to stay.

This is an awesome historic boutique hotel in the heart of San Francisco, what a find! Reminds me of boutique hotels in NYC in the village. Rooms are small but very well appointed and thoughtfully designed, and huge bonus is windows open and they have screens on them, so you can let that fresh Pacific Ocean breeze in, amazing! Extremely comfy cozy place with wonderful history, walking distance to great restaurants in all directions. I’ll be staying here again.

I stayed here for 5 nights and i really enjoyed it! The location is perfect in my opinion, there is a 7/11 and a Walgreens right across the hotel which is extremely convenient. There is also a cable car right outside. I used public transportation everywhere and it wasn’t too hard to navigate. The room itself was small but nice and comfortable. There’s no fridge but there is a microwave downstairs, along with a water fountain. I felt safe here because after 9, you need an hotel key card to open the property doors, also there is someone at the front desk 24/7. Overall, i would stay at this location again 100%.
