Reviews
The Taj Campton SF Hotel is highly praised for its exceptional customer service, cleanliness, and convenient location in San Francisco. Guests frequently mention the friendly and attentive staff, comfortable rooms, and proximity to Union Square and other attractions.
- Exceptional customer service
- Convenient location in San Francisco
- Hidden fees and high parking charges
- Some guests find the rooms dated or small

Nice hotel, good service. Restaurant way overpriced and not good. Rooms were fine, hardly 4 star though. Small size too. Overall, good for SF. Not great, or special. Good location for Union Square

Gorgeous hotel, we included both the dinner and the breakfast in this stay. Amazing staff, fantastic food, and very comfortable room. Had small issue with the bathtub and they upgraded us to a suite, and were lovely about the whole thing. Will return for sure. Nothing, this stay exceeded our expectations.

The staff was excellent . The breakfast was fresh and delicious!! The beds were so comfortable!! Maids excellent!! Friendly and wonderful bartender!!

The staff were exceptional and they offered me an affordable upgrade on checking in. The rooms were exceptional and all the service staff were extremely nice and helpful. I didn't have any negative experience; it is an excellent facility in a great central location in San Francisco.

What a wonderful hotel in a super convenient location! We were just one block from Union Square and all of its great shops. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly warm and welcoming. They were even able to accommodate an early check-in and a late check-out, which made our schedule for the event we were attending in SF so much easier. The room itself was large, clean, and packed with thoughtful amenities—everything from complimentary bottled water to extra toothbrushes in the bathroom. The beds were very comfortable with full, plush pillows, and we didn't hear a peep from the adjoining rooms or the street. Parking is located just around the corner and is reasonably priced for the city. We also loved the on-site restaurant, which served delicious food and excellent cocktails. All in all, I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Great staff, bar, reception etc. but for a 5-star hotel, a little tired.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel, very competent staff, great food - highly recommended. Only caveat is that some of their rooms might require a soft renovation rather sooner than later.

Loved staying here! Everyone working at this hotel were AMAZING!! I felt like they truly cared about me. The front desk was so helpful with ideas of what to visit and what to expect. The room was lovely and the restaurant food was delicious. I will return!!

Using Booking.com. They presented the cost for only one night when I clearly had asked for 2 nights. This was incredibly deceptive. Why would they only present the cost of one night. Yes, they did send an email that stated the total cost and it’s my fault for not checking but it should have been the total cost when I was booking it on their site. I will never use booking.com ever again. I was warned by a friend not to use them! Never ever again!!

Smallish room but not bad for SF
- 5/5
Our first evening was not fun They moved us the second night We were happy
- 4/5
The only thing keeping it from 4.5 to 5 stars is that my deluxe king was supppsed to have a window sear and it did not. Usually I know the hotels better so would have caught it at check-in (they may have downgraded me as the room als seemed smaller than the deluxe king as it was close to the fire exit. Next time I will call it out at check-in and have a better handle on the rooms - most hotels take advantage of newbies bc you don’t know the config. But it was great. Staff. Amenities. Location. Built-ins.
- 5/5
The staff went above and beyond during our stay. We were in town for my sister’s wedding and they really went out of their way to make her feel special.
- 5/5
Wonderful one-night stay at Taj Campton Place. The service was excellent, and Saraya in particular was outstanding: warm, professional, and genuinely helpful. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, which matters a lot to us. A very enjoyable stay from start to finish.
- 5/5
Coffee & danish every morning was great!!
- 5/5
The Taj Campton is a welcoming place to stay and we have become repeat visitors. All the things that matter are met: cleanliness, comfort, thoughtfulness, location and friendliness.
- 4/5
My main issue dragging down the overall is the $30 resort fee, which is likely standard for SF but could have much more visibly been disclosed in the listing. As usual not sure I need to pay $30 for a couple bottles of water and breakfast coffee I didn't need (since I left at 4am) but it is what it is. Just don't spring it on me at check-in.
- 4/5
However, we were a bit disappointed in the following: morning coffee and water in lobby were empty each day, water dispenser in the gym was also empty. Our keys needed to be rekeyed 3x. Our housekeeper who was generally excellent entered our room once without knocking first. Doorman did not notice our return one evening because he was sitting inside on his phone. Although noticeable we considered these small details which are fixable. The Taj is still a special hotel.
- 5/5
Perfect
- 5/5
We booked the hotel for its location, but for a fraction of the price of a room at the Hyatt across the street, we got so much more. Free coffee and pastries every morning was a much-appreciated perk after our red-eye flight. Central location, convenient to just about everywhere in town. Lots of great dining options within walking distance. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very nice, very clean, and the shower was great. Not much of a view, but that would be the only complaint and it really isn't that important. We would definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
Quiet room, well appointed, bedtime service, wonderful breakfast (with muesli), pleasant staff, and convenient location close to Bart and bus routs. Couldn't be better.
- 5/5
The room was very comfortable and spacious. The staff was courteous and helpful. Prime location near Union Square. I definitely recommend and will stay here again.

Yes. Almost as soon as we called to replace a burnt out lightbulb, someone was there to change it.
- 4/5
Great location. Good room. Breakfast and room service started at 7am which quite late
- 5/5
Authentic Indian cuisine at the Bombay Brasseries restaurant - the chefs are from South India and Nepal, one can't find better Indian food anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area!
- 5/5
Home away from home. Cozy bar , great front desk staff.
- 5/5
The best hotel staff in San Francisco! Bar none!
- 5/5
Room had all the appropriate amenities. Loved the tub in the bathroom. Closet had enough space. Good view of Union square.
- 2/5

- 5/5
They took incredible care of me.
- 5/5
They were so kind, they even sent me flowers and a condolence card. When I return to SF, there is nowhere else I would consider staying.
- 3/5
The lighting in the room was not great, charging options were limited and out dated. Staff was great. Room service and menu were limited and it took house keeping took too long to clear try’s and carts from corridors. This was such a gem in the day but a facelift is due.
- 5/5
Great hotel and staff
- 5/5
It was a wonderful stay. The room was clean and quiet, with lots of amenities. All the staff was exceptionally kind and courteous.
- 5/5
Love this place. Have stayed for over 20 years. A bit old school now, but still great
- 5/5
this is a fabulous hotel. top to bottom. the staff is amazing. the rooms are wonderful. the amenities top shelf. just a real, old fashioned great hotel.
- 5/5
Wonderful Staff and hospitality.
- 4/5
No ability to eat at the hotel restaurant.
- 3/5
It was a fine stay however the hotel is a bit dated.
- 5/5
The room was beautifully appointed. But the courteous staff stood out above everything. From the front desk to the valet that greeting us at the door, the service was excellent and much appreciated.
- 5/5
Well appointed, quiet, and clean room. Beautiful building. Our reservation came with a complimentary meal that was superb. Far more food than we’d have thought and delicious. The hotel staff were friendly, professional, and accommodating. We would definitely stay here again.
- 2/5
We were not informed with the time of booking that type of room that we booked did not face union Square. We did not get high floors as requested although we booked several months ago. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. They have the old spring beds in these hotel rooms. The furniture is dated. The rooms need serious renovation. Water backs up in the shower stall. The restaurants on property have terrible service.
- 5/5
Staff were amazing! Edwin was great & friendly.
- 5/5
Love it
- 2/5
The room felt old, the staff was unhelpful
- 5/5
Clean room and great staff, along with a fantastic location in Union Square. Just a heads-up: if you want a quieter room, avoid those close to the elevator — in my case, it didn’t let me sleep in.
- 5/5
Gorgeous property but the tub was slippery and i fell even though i was holding the grab bard
- 5/5
Top!!
- 5/5
This is a great hotel, really good value too. Top notch customer service all around, great location etc. it’s a little bit corky due to it being such an old historic building but the room has lots of well placed thought out little amenities. Overall I highly recommend!
- 5/5
Very friendly and attentive staff
- 5/5
Everything about it was great. We plan to return in the future.
- 5/5
Front desk and sales staff so accommodating and thoughtful. Housekeeping is excellent. Just a warm and comfortable place to stay in the City.
- 5/5
Very nice property and location, with friendly staff and wonderful bath products. The bed was truly exceptional and very comfortable. My only fault is the hotel is feeling very 2000s luxe and dated (but the price is reflective of this to be fair)
- 1/5
web check in was present. I completed the process but never received the text/email. Wow!!!
- 5/5
My happy place.
- 2/5
Smells like curry through out the entire property. They charged me $136.00 for valet and parked my car around the corner in the open street. And the room in general was old, mini fridge didn’t work and mattress was old and very uncomfortable
- 4/5
super staff
- 5/5
I would stay here again.
- 2/5
My stay at the Taj was a part of a longer birthday vacation I had taken. I had traveled from Philadelphia and completed my check in. A quick signature on the forms and my keys were handed over. Unaware of the rules of the state of California, and with a complete lack of signage or warnings in the room (and believe me I did look), I lit a cigarette in the bathroom. Within 5 minutes there was a bang on my door from the GM, who was very very rude. I was told that I am being fined immediately and that I will be evicted if this happens again. He did not want to listen or engage in any discussion. Now within 30 minutes of arriving in my room I am given a strict warning that I will be thrown out, and slapped with a $500 fine. No warning, no anything. Mind you, the hotel was not hosting me for free, I paid handsomely for the comfort of the Taj. There is nothing to fault with the hotel and the room. Staff (Gurshan, Sierra, Steve, Rich) were amazing. But to welcome a guest into your hotel with a scolding like I was is definitely not the way to go. I was on vacation, not a company paid for business trip.
- 5/5
The staff was wonderful and helpful and friendly!!!
- 5/5
Excellent service, clean, comfortable and spacious room!
- 5/5
Clean room and excellent service
- 5/5
I’ve always wanted to try this hotel on my SF trips, and now I’ll probably never stay anywhere else. A peaceful hotel with many elegant touches and professional staff.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, great large feeling room, view etc.
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
The lobby felt outdated, not refreshed. I was “upgraded” to an accessible room, which only meant a bigger bathroom. The room itself was dark, dreary, and had no view. The shower was broken (quickly fixed after we reported it), but the sinks drained poorly. Noise insulation was nonexistent — we were woken by slamming doors in the hallway. The saving grace was the service. Every staff member we encountered was excellent — warm, engaging, and helpful. Late checkout was granted easily, and the doorman even walked us around the corner while giving local advice. Walking around San Francisco was bittersweet. The city has changed; while there are visible improvements with police presence and street cleaning, the charm has faded. I went inside Neiman Marcus, once my favorite stop, and while the building is still stunning, the store no longer had its old glamour. Many nearby buildings were vacant, adding to the sense of decline. Overall: service shines, but the hotel feels neglected, with outdated rooms and poor soundproofing. I’d consider returning only if Taj invests in upgrades. For now, it’s a shadow of what it used to be.
- 4/5
Place looks a little dated
- 5/5
We enjoyed oit time at Taj Campton. It's a beautiful place.
- 5/5
Loved the thoughtfulness with extra water and Nespresso. I might add more vegetarian options to the bar menu like mezze or even hummous with pita. Some light nibbles with drinks.
- 5/5
The staff and manager were all very receptive to all our requests. We are most impressed and look forward to staying at The Taj on our next visit.
- 5/5
I love this place.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel with great staff and amazing breakfast
- 5/5
This is a beautiful, tasteful, quiet hotel. As soon as you walk through the door, you are welcomed by the staff. The decor and ambience is a welcome relief from the busy Union Square. It is my goto hotel, when I want to have a staycation in the Bay Area.
- 1/5
I stayed at the Taj Campton Place for three nights. I chose the hotel because it was a 5 star hotel within easy walking distance of the Moscone center (I was in San Francisco for a conference). The location is good, but sadly the hotel is not worthy of 5 stars — it’s more like a 3 star hotel. I’ve stayed at other Taj hotels, and this one pales in comparison. The facilities were run down, the room I stayed in was extremely noisy with loud mechanical noises all night long (many rooms are adjacent to the elevator shaft, since it’s a tall building with a small footprint). All in all, there are much better options to choose from in San Francisco.
- 4/5
This hotel was fine. I’ve stayed in nicer. The shower was small and the door set up was a bit weird. It could use an interior refresh but it did the job. The bed was nice though - I was impressed with that. It was very comfortable.
- 4/5
Very nice staff
- 3/5
The hotel wasn’t special it was ok
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel 10/10 recommend
- 5/5
Very comfortable room. Great staff.
- 5/5
Very nice decor. Room is spacious and first class amenities. Very clean room with many nice touches. Professional and courteous staff.
- 4/5
The rooms need to be upgraded, but the rest of the hotel is fine. The shower in 601 e.g., is difficult to maneuver. The hotel is not what what it used to be.
- 5/5
This is our 3rd stay at the Taj. It’s a gem for the price and location. Don’t expect Ritz Carlton amenities. But you’re not paying $1000/night. Most of the rooms are around $250-300. At that price, it’s a stone cold bargain.
- 5/5
A fantastic stay at the Taj. Clean and nicely appointed room. Friendly staff. Excellent pastries and coffee in the morning. Within in walking distance to many San Fran attractions. We will be back :)
- 5/5
It is an elegant and cozy hotel. The bed is very comfortable. The room is nicely decorated with every details taken care of. Breakfast is delicious.
- 3/5
The restaurant and bartender were beyond PHENOMENAL, food delicious and such amazing energy and care at the bar!! The hotel room, however, had a horrible smell. I woke up to the worst sewer smell coming out of my bathroom. So overall decent stay- I will definitely come back to visit the bar but probably wouldn’t stay in the rooms.
- 5/5
Great hotel, great location and awesome hospitality. You cannot ask for more for a hotel next to Union Sq. san Fran!
- 5/5
Any concerns about the neighborhood are long gone. Was great to walk around. Good to see SF bouncing back!

- 5/5
Comfy bed, great check in and friendly valet. What a great hotel!
- 4/5
They need to change card system for elevator use. My card did not work nor did it work for several other guests.
- 4/5
old and outdated furniture and interior design
- 4/5
It was fine, nothing bad but nothing spectacular either.
- 4/5
Nice hotel. Room was SF small, but well kept. Nice touches like slippers at bedside. Lobby bar small but good service
- 3/5
I had charges to my card for items never purchased. I hope in the future they have a better system with ensuring guests are asked to verify their room to charge there.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel. Great staff. Cushy bed. Will definitely stay here again
- 5/5
The staff were all unbelievably kind, on another level. I worked at Disney and know a think or two about good guest service, but these folks felt genuine. Dan at the door helped us with everything we needed. We didn’t look like the other clientele. We were scrappy little punk emos taking up space in a refined lobby and they still treated us with the upmost kindness and respect. We wanted an early check in and it wasn’t available. As soon as they could they got us in 30 minutes before check in and upgraded our view for our patience. I will be staying here again no questions asked.
- 5/5
I don’t like carpet in the room
- 5/5
Great customer service
- 5/5
Excellent customer service
- 5/5
I love this property, only stay here when in San Francisco. The staff complete the perfection in a perfectway. Thank you
- 4/5
The staff were very nice and welcoming. The room was generally quiet, with the exception of some noise from the elevator. There was a bathtub in the room, but the water only came from the showerhead, so I wasn’t able to use it for a bath. The pillows were a bit flat for my preference. The internet connection was slow at times, with occasional difficulty connecting and an inconsistent signal. Overall, the stay was comfortable and met my needs.
- 5/5
Comfortable beds, great location. Rooms feel a little dated though
- 5/5
Very very good n amazing staff
- 4/5
Great location. We were able to walk into Chinatown, Union square, and several other places. Nice quiet hotel.
- 3/5
Lot of issues with check-in
- 5/5
This place is in a perfect location. Walking distance from clothe and electronics stores. Convenience access for public and private transportation. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. The room was spacious and clean.
- 5/5
Everything exceeded my expectations, the friendliness of all the staff, complimentary bottled water, comfortable bed and bedding ,room service and valet parking. We’ll be returning !
- 4/5
I had a nice stay but nothing special...
- 5/5
Nice property. Close to shopping.
- 5/5
Perfect condition with great service
- 3/5
On the bright side, the staff was friendly and professional, with special recognition to the doorman, who provided exceptional service. The rooms were spotless and well-maintained, which was appreciated. However, despite the cleanliness, the rooms felt somewhat dated and would benefit from an upgrade, especially for a hotel of this caliber. Unfortunately, there were a few disappointing elements. I was caught off guard by unexpected fees that I feel should have been included in the room rate—things like Wi-Fi, coffee pods in the bedrooms, and other services that I’d expect to be covered at a luxury hotel. The most frustrating part, however, came in the morning when I asked about the pastries included in the fees. To my surprise, there were no pastries available at all, and I had an unpleasant interaction with a staff member who was less than accommodating about it. Additionally, the "city view" from the room turned out to be just a view of the building next door—certainly not the skyline I had imagined. For the price, I expected a more scenic outlook, especially given the location. In the end, while the Taj Campton has a friendly staff and maintains a clean environment, the extra fees, outdated rooms, and lack of available amenities make it difficult to justify the cost. There are plenty of other hotel

- 2/5
It was a great hotel, but now very marginal but yet with a very high cost. The restaurant, which was a coveted location, is no expense but the food terrible . No room amenities of any kind. A real disappointment and we will not be back.
- 5/5
The personnel are always over the top (excellent). We appreciate it very much.
- 4/5
Union square is unsafe and a lot of businesses are vacant
- 5/5
Very nice hotel, second stay in a great location.
- 4/5
I have only great things to say about the property - clean, spacious, quiet, great location, pleasant staff and good value. What’s keeping me from giving 5 stars is their billing practices. One week later, there is still a room hold charge of +$400 on my card, despite the bill being paid in full (also on my card). Plus a food & beverage credit is still not reflected. I’ve called the hotel twice and was told to be patient. This is not okay! I have never experienced this with a hotel before and I have traveled extensively.
- 5/5
Amazing location and great staff. Wonderful restaurant and comfortable rooms. The bathroom is enormous.
- 5/5
location convinient
- 4/5
very good
- 5/5
Love this property.
- 5/5
Amazing property. Location is 10/10
- 4/5
Very nice hotel with a comfortable scale in a convenient location. My only criticism is the age of the bathroom, spacious and in good condition but the toilet is not chair height and there was a step up to get into the (deep) tub/shower. It did not feel very safe.
- 5/5
Very nice hotel in excellent location near many attractions. Quiet given the location. The Bombay Brassiere serves a great fixed price dinner, a bit on the spicy side. Prices are a bit high, but not surprising given the location and the current economy.
- 4/5
Great location . Stay as expected
- 5/5
Classic SF Hotel that has been updated. For a single business traveller, it very comfortable, everything I needed, very convenient location and surprisingly quite at night, even though my room was on the second floor. I got a great deal thru Expedia on this room. Based on other hotels in the area, and I have stayed at many of them, I consider this experience in the sweet spot of cost and value.
- 4/5
I thought the people there were lovely and helpful. My room was very dark and had one window facing an ally and also right next door to the elevator which I really don’t like. So it was loud. And once I got to the room I was too tired to see if I could change it but I did feel like I maybe got the worst room in the hotel. But again everyone was lovely and if I had to be there more that one night I would have tried to switch.
- 5/5
We look forward to returning.
- 4/5
Great location, rooms are quiet for SF, but you can hear showers running in the floors above. I am a light sleeper so I was up as soon as the first shower of the day started (5:45am). With a sound machine or ear plugs it would be the best deal for the price in SF. Room is so clean and bed is great. They need to update their TVs, but not a big deal as there’s plenty to do in the city besides watch TV.
- 5/5
Great hotel . Quiet and comfortable
- 5/5
Great place!
- 5/5
Amazing stay. Would love to comeback
- 5/5
Great hotel. Friendly staff. Very comfortable bed.
- 2/5
Disappointing experience. This hotel is far from a 5-star standard — it feels more like a dated 3-star Chinese hotel from the early 2000s. The room was outdated, and the overhead light couldn't be turned off due to a broken switch, making it difficult to sleep. When I mentioned this to the front desk the next morning, they showed little concern beyond a quick, disinterested apology. The fitness room is small, the breakfast area resembles a Denny's, and yet they charge a $30 facility fee — a complete rip-off. Overall, it's just an average, aging hotel with no historical significance or charm. Keep your expectations accordingly.
- 5/5
Boutique hotel with excellent location to explore SF, staff attentive, friendly and welcoming.
- 5/5
This is a great, boutique property right off Union Square. It is very clean and the staff is top-notch. We ate breakfast in the attached restaurant and it was very good. I would definitely stay here again.
- 3/5
Treated much better when booked under American Express. Hotels.com “VIP” does not seem to be a real thing at Taj.
- 5/5
Property was kept well. Staff friendly. Good location.
- 4/5
Great service!
- 4/5
Not as amazing as some 5 star properties I have stayed at (felt a bit outdated) but quite comfortable. No major qualms. I booked because it is a VIP Access property and appreciated my VIP Access benefit greatly! That was the reason I stayed on property for meals- thank you!
- 5/5
Great place!
- 4/5
I'm not sure why this hotel is listed as 5 star... It's not... It's perfectly fine place, probably a 4 star... But not at all comparable in experience to a 5 star luxury hotel
- 5/5
Had a lovely stay here for valentines. The staff was super friendly for helping us find cool stuff to do around the area. The union square area seems to have really cleaned up and feels very safe. The rooms were big and the bed was very comfortable. For a 5 star hotel I wished the rooms were a bit more decorated / dressed up. Otherwise an immaculate stay. Would stay again.
- 5/5
Very good stat
- 2/5
This in San Fran was a terrible experience and food at the Bombay Brasseries was atrocious.
