Reviews
The hotel is in a prime location, with easy access to various attractions and amenities. However, the rooms are outdated, small, and not as clean as expected, with several guests reporting issues with bedding, bathroom cleanliness, and unpleasant odors.
- Excellent location
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Outdated and small rooms
- Cleanliness issues, including reports of bed bugs, dirty bathrooms, and unpleasant odors

Would be nice to have coffee. Best rest I’ve ever had. Will recommend and stay again.
- 5/5
Great stay overall- clean rooms, friendly staff a perfect location for getting around especially Chinatown.
- 4/5
This is a classic European style hotel. It is not shiny and new but that is part of the charm. It literally feels like you are in a small Paris hotel with all that entails. To further the feeling of Paris there are three excellent French bistros within a block. Yes it is also right next to the Chinatown gate. There are so many different cuisines and great restaurants in the area. Chinatown and “little Europe” all at the same hotel. Just don’t be disappointed when there are no 1200 thread count sheets. Food picture is from nearby restaurant.

Solo necesitaba un lugar para dormir y bañarme. Nada lujoso. Cumplió con lo esperado!
- 3/5
Great location, walkable to the muni station, nice restaurants and shops around and the china town is right there
- 3/5
Everything worked and the location was pretty good. Other than that, wasn’t the cleanest and kind of poorly maintained for the age of the building. I would say worth the price though and it worked pretty good for our trip considering we only used it to sleep.

Thank you for your friendly service
- 5/5
I will say the rooms on the street side were very noisy due to chinatown traffic, lots of honking and yelling in middle of night bit other than that it was a nice stay.

Location was great! Everything accessible and centrally located. House keeping didn’t turn up even after staying for 3 nights. So by the end of 3rd day the room was a mess but there was no staff to clean the room.

It wasn’t bad. It was clean. But there was no coffee maker, or microwave. When we would get back from being out there were only 5 tv channels!

Great location! It’s old, so you get what you paid for - nothing against the hotel, I knew what I was booking. The only thing I really didn’t like was the polyester bedding.

Passable
- 5/5
The room was comfortable but a bit small. It came with a fridge though there did not seem to be a microwave available for guests. The hotel is located right near Chinatown, so there are many good food options nearby, and the view from the window was great. Just note that luggage storage before checkin or after checkout may come with an extra fee. Overall it was a comfortable stay with a convenient location.
- 5/5
In the heart of china town, good food options nearby.

Great location, nice room, and good views. Central to a lot of SF Bed was like a rock and there was 2 thin sheets and a hospital blanket. 4 thin pillows. I’m not a picky sleeper, but I was quite uncomfortable on this bed.

if you’re looking for a card key (for security that shows who’s been in your room if needed) instead of an actual key (w a hotel tag that shows hotel address and room number) then forget this place. one shaky elevator for 7 floors but there is a staircase. wall heater but no a/c. there’s a reason this was the cheapest hotel during my SF stay of 3/24-3/28. everywhere else was sold out. the area is ok. right by the start of chinatown at Bush/Grant. Pass if you can unless you’re desperate for a room.

It was a good location. Staff was okay nothing exceptional but were kind and responsive. Room was what’s you expect from a historic hotel. Bedding was clean and room smelled nice. Only issue was some hair in the bathroom walls. Overall worth it for the price.
- 2/5
We could walk most places we went to. The bed was extremely hard. The bathtub was filthy and clogged while we were there. The carpet had big clumps of hair in several places.

No ac, dirty room full of hair on bed, under bed and floor.
- 4/5
It is at a good location. It meets expectations

SF Plaza Hotel is old, outdated and now kept in great codition
- 3/5
Excellent location. The property is very old, but it is fine for a city vacation. It does not have air conditioning.
- 1/5
The room itself feels poorly maintained and far below standard. I honestly don’t understand how this place has good ratings. My experience was extremely disappointing. The staff were fine, and I did feel safe as a solo girl traveler, but that’s the only positive. If you have the budget, do not stay here. It’s absolutely not worth it.
- 4/5
Location was right next to Dragons Gate Chinatown. It was easy to get to hotel travelling on the BART from SFO Airport. 10 mins walk to shops including Macy, Target. Property was clean.
- 4/5
Staff was very accommodating and friendly, location was great-near pretty much everything. The only issue was there was a lot of random long hairs in the bathroom floor and on the bed sheets. Some of the towels also had stains. However the bed was comfortable, hotel was in great shape for a historical building.
- 4/5
That being said, for the price, it was still worth it!
- 5/5
Extremely close to Chinatown. So many places to visit and see that's very walkable.
- 5/5

Very good location, I think part of china town Close to many shops restaurants and churches
- 2/5
The location is decent, but the property is very aged. The rooms are big enough, but everything in them is quite old and unkept. The bed wasn't comfortable, the desk looked 30+ years old, the shower was at the level of my neck, and the bathroom counter could barely hold my small toiletry bag. This property needs a major update and the rooms need all new furniture and amenities. Towels were quite rough and old too.
- 5/5
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION Bed hard as a rock, but hey have a few sake bombs and some brews, sleeping like a baby!!

Room good size clean and comfortable, bedding and towels get changed if you ask. Perfect location within easy reach of the whole city whether you want to walk, catch a cable car, tram, bus.
- 3/5
Friendly staff. The Expedia listing for this property does not align with the actual amenities: there is no breakfast provided (staff said the Expedia listing was old and out of date) and the “queen” was actually a full size bed (staff said that was the “same size as all of the beds” listed as queen). The location was great and easy to access. The room was clean. The elevator went out on the last day we were there but the staff were really friendly and offered complimentary luggage storage to help offset the inconvenience. That was really kind. Overall a good stay.

Location Ease of check in and out. Time of check out Old building, quite loud from street noise.

The SF Plaza Hotel is an excellent and wonderful place to stay. With every five star luxury and amenity one would expect to find. Ahh, if the walls could talk, the tales of a bygone age they would tell. The Plaza really is a very nice place to stay. I will miss it. It felt like home.
- 4/5
I have to travel here frequently for medical treatment, The Price is Right at this hotel and it is centrally located. The staff is always very kind and courteous the hotel itself has a nice historic vibe. The rooms are a little hit and miss. The rooms are always clean but some of them are a little run down and shabby. This time my room had a small desk with an aluminum folding chair for the seat. I think it would have been better off just not having anything then to put an aluminum folding chair in. I take those things in good humor and remind myself how much I'm paying to stay and night in San Francisco. The shower in this room was top notch it was one of the highlights of the trip.
- 4/5
4/5 only because the bathroom wasn’t as clean.
- 2/5
The room was horrible. The elevator was creepy. The smell was horrific.
- 3.5/5
I attended a weekend conference and did not want to stay at the $400/night hotel, so I chose SF Plaza as a less expensive alternative. The area was safe and a short walk to Embarcadero. The room was fairly quiet and comfortable. The heater did not work (only the fan did). The room was basically cleaned but not thoroughly (found an empty liquor bottle under the bed)

The location was great, the bed was incredibly hard. The elevator is a little scary, but the staircases provide a good work out!
- 3/5
Okay so this was one of the inexpensive options and it was phenomenal for what it was, the location was immaculate it’s actually right next to SF’s Chinatown and Union Square. Now the hotel’s cleanliness is up for question it was hairs all over the bathroom (that were not mines) but it could have been a custodians hair, the overall cleanliness did make me skeptical but I survived lol. It really is what you pay for but it was decent :)
- 5/5
Yes
- 4/5
Simple and clean with a comfortable bed.and a reasonable price.
- 3/5
It's located in a convenient and safe location. With restarants and some shops nearby. And the staff was nice and helpful. But the tv was small and my bed was pretty hard. There's no fridge or microwave. So if you're not looking for a luxurious experience, it's fine. Sorry, the only picture I took was of the view out of the window.
- 1/5
The hotel does not offer any amenities listed. The profile said airport shuttle service. I called to confirm on my arrival to learn they do not offer shuttle service. Keep in mind my flight arrived10pm. The gap between the door frame and doors made door security an issue. The window was open when i entered the room. I closed the window to find it did not lock at all. Keep in mind they placed me on a floor where window access was easy. The bed sheets were dirty, the bathroom was dirty, towels smelled and swemed to be poorly washed. Very motel-ish (if u know what i mean....as in hourly motel-ish.).in addition they advertise breakfast this is also not true the hotel does not have a kitchen. And doesnot offer breakfast as advertised. This place was so bad i checked out 10min after checking in and went to another hotel at almost 1am. .DO NOT waste ur money. I am still in communucation with hotels.com about this place and their false advertisement concerning amenities and more importantly the saftey of the guest in this hotel. 1th Th

Thank you for a wonderful trip P.s never judge a book by its cover
- 4/5
Location is great, walking distances from restaurants Sometimes homeless people hang around by the are but they don’t stay long.
- 4/5
Convenient and cost-effective The upkeep if the premises could be better, especially in the bathrooms
- 0.5/5
This was the grossest room I've ever stayed in. There was hair everywhere. Popcorn all over the ground. The TV was so tiny. My skin was absolutely crawling. The shower had mold and didn't look like it was cleaned properly ever. The walls had a thick layer of dust. And the room smelt like feet. I get that it's an old building but my God. Zero effort in the cleanliness
- 3.5/5
Staff and location Toilet and shower
- 3.5/5
I loved the location of the hotel to China Town. The room was plenty big for me and my son. The staff was really friendly and nice. The bathroom was gross. There was black hair all over the bathroom floor. The toliet needed a good wipe down. And the shower had mold everywhere. The bathroom and shower needed a good cleaning.
- 3/5
Like a lot of mid-priced hotels in SF, this is a good value in a good location but it could use renovation. The rooms are fine, the beds are fine, the bathrooms are OK. It just feels all a bit dilapidated. But well kept and staff were friendly, and the hotel is just fine. Given how outrageous the prices have gotten in SF, it's a good value. Rooms are small but adequate. And you are near chinatown and union square, easy walk to Market Street. Nothing was bad, it's just an older small hotel with a bit of a charming run-down feel.
- 5/5
Keep in mind this is an old building so the AC hardly works lol but the heater does work, and it does tend to get a bit cold at night.
- 4/5
Decent hotel but quite old and needs updating, floor was creaky, and front desk staff could be more attentive
- 1/5
Terrible place. There was an overpowering musty smell, and I couldn't sleep at all. The room was dirty, the floor was sticky, and I couldn't even take a shower because everything was filthy. There was no one to clean the rooms. I do not recommend it. The front desk staff was friendly, but other than that, the place is horrendous. If you want to rest, look elsewhere.
- 4/5
location was good
- 1/5
The beds were so stiff. It was hard to sleep. It felt like sleeping on cardboard.
- 4/5
it is ok and affordable in the area. The room is a little small and old but overall good.
- 4/5
Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Hotel is older but location is excellent. Bar fridge but no coffee maker. Great hot shower. Very quiet. Will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Good place for the price
- 4.5/5
Water temperature could be a little warmer.
- 5/5
No breakfast to my knowledge. Very much home base great solomtravel experience close to everything and if youre a walker you will have a great vantage point
- 5/5
The room ia good enough for solo traveler for a short vacation. Eduardo is very accommodating during the checked-in. I just hope that the hotel management would be more considerate to accommodate for an early check-in especially for traveler that arrived early from a long trip. All in all the hotel is nice and good value for money.
- 3/5
The hotel was ok for the price and location. However it is very outdated. Rooms are small bathroom very old and not very clean. The bed is difficult to sleep. Vey hard mattress is like sleeping on the floor. The window couldn’t be open or closed all the way up. Good thing we were on the higher level. The staff was great and accommodating.
- 4/5
Great location, clean room and in the heart of down town.
- 4/5
Safe area, great homebase. Travel: 3 nights with my teenage daughter to catch a show at Chase Center.

- 5/5
Great location
- 3/5
No coffee. No heat in Bathroom. Tiny TV. No USB charge ports for phones. Charge ports are critical.
- 2/5
Location. Bad smell in the room and in the bed. Dirty towels, long hair in the bed, and in the bathroom from previous guests.
- 5/5
The room was very clean and the staff were very courteous. And the location was great
- 1/5
Ditrty. Trash left under bed from prior person. Toilet seat broken.
- 3/5
The room was cold, and gave me a cold. Yes, they have a built-in heater, but old wiring, which is why the arrival of the small refrigerator came with the caveat that you can't plug in the fridge and the microwave at the same time. And there was no maid service for 5 days.
- 5/5
Clean room & friendly staff
- 5/5
The room was very clean and the staff friendly. I liked the fact the hotel is located near Chinatown. Thank you!!!
- 3/5
Easy check in
- 2/5
Very dated property with dirty windows. Bedding was clean. Reception Staff were nonchalent. Advised shuttle to airport (as advertised) had not been available for 2 years. Cheap accommodation in good location right next to china town. Lovely cafe on opposite corner.
- 3/5
For what it was, it was okay. However the premium room was still tiny, very dingy and unclean. There was hair everywhere and rice and peanuts down on the floor. However, the bedding looked clean and everything worked including a fridge and microwave (although the fridge did freeze my stuff as it was up on max!). The location was good, right next to the Dragon Gate and staff were very friendly and nice so points for that! If you want some space, more amenities and a cleaner experience, I’d advise spending a little more but otherwise it did the job for somewhere to sleep
- 1/5
I did not stay. I stepped in, took a look around and left. It was very dirty. Working on trying to get a refund. The front desk gentleman was very nice.
- 3/5
Great location. Stayed here bc the city was so full with Dreamforce there was no other option. The hotel common areas carpet is very dirty and there was a musty smell throughout the stairways. Room carpets are old and shower looked dirty (but could have been so embedded in plastic floor unable to make look cleaner). Sheets looked clean. Beds seemed to just be boxes without real mattresses, but that made them seem cleaner.
- 4/5
It is a bit dated but the staff were very kind and helpful and I was able to save time and money by walking everywhere I needed to be for a conference.
- 4/5
Besides that it was okay, just expect a really really old building and everything that comes with it.
- 5/5
Shower was moldy
- 2/5
Around the block from China Town. Very walkable to lots of restaurants and things to do. Now for the bad... the rooms are dirty. The bathroom had mold in the grout, there was someone else's hair on all the sheets and blankets, the ground under the bed looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable and there was no AC so we had to keep the windows open all night leading to a very loud night. No clue how tp get out of the building in case of fire and the elevator bounces when you're on it.
- 3/5
Close to shopping.
- 1/5
Good locstion
- 1/5
The rooms were dirty and breakfast was not provided even though it was advertised and there weren't any microwaves in the rooms
- 2/5
The bathroom was old, dirty and outdated. The tub didn't drain very well. The carpet in the room was stained and sketchy. The last time we.stayed there, the room had a microwave, this time it did not. Disappointing.
- 1/5
The bathroom was filthy with Black mold. Dirt and hair. I took photos of the filth that I would like to send you.
- 3/5
Old hotel. No AC. We were able to see “
- 3/5
I mean for the price it’s doable , rooms got super hot at night but pretty close to bars/coffee shops parking was insanely priced but I guess not having your car broken into is worth it kinda

Great place to stay
- 4/5
Great location! Very safe parking garage right across the street for overnight parking. Old building so sound travels. Carpets are old and stained and the tiles in the bathroom needed some cleaning.
- 5/5
Perfect place to sleep after a long day exploring city
- 5/5
The location is ideal for me, very walkable and many restaurants in the neighborhood.
- 4/5
Decent. Cheap, right next to China town. You get what you pay for, so this wasn’t flash but they kept it clean.
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Everything you need is right there
- 1/5
Very noisy
- 4/5
Like that it located in China town. In walking distance of Oracle park. Staff great. Plenty of pillows. Bathroom however had hair on the floor.
- 5/5
Good good ⭐️💫🌟
- 4/5
Loved the old world ambiance and location to Chinatown. We were at the Dragon entrance to Chinatown!
- 2/5
Moldy shower curtain. Jackhammer outside window at 8am. Not enough power outlets. Very small TV with no streaming option. No coffee in room or downstairs or even nearby.
- 1/5
Never again.
- 1/5
The property is convenient. I WILL NEVER come back here again. The elevator permit was expired for over a month and it allows rattles when going up and down. Bath water knob break off easily and tub floor doesnt look clean. Heater smells weird. Hair and grime everywhere. Would not recommend anyone to come regardless if it cheap.
- 3/5
Fair price, good location, good size room for 2. Bathroom had moldy shower curtain and some other problems. Bedding was clean, beds comfortable.
- 3/5
Ok
- 1/5
The room was extremely dirty. And the windows wouldn’t close properly letting all the very loud noise from outside all night long. There were people yelling and laughing in the street well past 2:00am. I actually left mid stay because the conditions were so poor, and was not given a refund for the days I was not staying. I travel to SF for work quite frequently and I will never stay at this property again.
- 5/5
i realy enjoyed my stay, will definitely stay here my next trip to Mexicali.
- 5/5
A nice place, quiet room, good internet, close to where i wanted to be.
- 5/5
Very nice staff. When we first got there the tv in the room wasn't working and maintenance was gone for the day so they let us switch rooms. Asked if we could do a late check out and they had no problem with it at all
- 3/5
There is no house keeping for the stay. The room was also a bit tired.

Most wonderful staff and hotel out of many i have been to. Staff ars efficient and very professional, akso vert helpful
- 5/5
Great location to everything, safe, great pricing!
- 5/5
I would like tom compliment one of your staff members ; his name is Eduardo who is efficient, extremely helpful. He goes above and beyond to help and get things done.
- 3/5
It’s an outbuilding so it’s expected to have a little Diaz here or there but Al have a clean bathroom. The bathroom was so nasty. I had to clean myself because I couldn’t shower in the bathroom already that everything was OK.
- 1/5
The bed mattress was rock hard. It was like trying to sleep on plywood. Could not sleep the entire night i was there
- 5/5
The staff were extra nice and helpful. They went the extra mile to accommodate to our necessities every time we asked for anything. And they are all bilingual.
- 3/5
The queen size bed was like sleeping on cement I’ve never slept on something that hard, so no sleep.
- 5/5
Like the ambience of the hotel !
- 2/5
Very dirty
- 4/5
En un hotel decente para una estadía corta. Es muy central y el servicio es amable. Aunque cobran por dejar maletas lo cual nunca había visto. La ducha funciona bien y tiene todo lo básico, pero nada más. A nivel general necesita una renovación en el futuro.
- 4/5
Simple and accommodating hotel in a great location. Easy walks to Chinatown, Union Square, Nob Hill, and a short distance from Embarcadero and Wharf. Staff was wonderful. Would definitely stay again.
- 1/5
The room was gross, I had to wipe down the shower, I don’t think it’s even been clean.
- 1/5
- 1/5
The most nastiest hotel ever. The bathroom was dirty and the sheets had stains. The staffs changed my room but the new room was in same condition. I had to check out within an hour. I did not wanted to sleep in a dirty bed. I had to pay for the first night even when I did not stay the night but I just wanted to get out of there. The elevator shakes and makes noise so that is definitely a safety hazard.
- 4/5
The hotel is older so don't expect conveniently placed electrical outlets or good water pressure.
- 5/5
Quiet and comfortable
- 4/5
The property is a little bit older. There is no airconditioning system just a heater so i just used the ceiling fan on which the next day stopped working. The room is clean and the staff are very nice, welcoming and helpful.
- 5/5
This place is in a great location. It is walkable enough and close to train stations. It is clean and spacious. For the price, I’d stay here again.
- 5/5
Walking distance to Chinatown. Literally at the gate
- 5/5
The staff was nice. Other than the creepy old elevator everything was nice.
- 5/5
Great place
- 4/5
Great location, clean and helpful staff!
- 3/5
Very old and had a smell.
- 2/5
Shower faucet was missing a knob. There was no way to change the temperature. Staff installed one the next day but they shouldn't be giving out a room in that condition. There were light bulbs that were burned out that I didn't bother to tell the front desk about. There's steps going into into the bathroom you wouldn't expect but no night lights to guard against tripping (I came close to having a serious injury twice).
- 2/5
Windows did not close all the way allowing outside noise into the room at all hours. The worst part was after getting up the next morning and packing up and witnessed something crawling on the edge of the bed, I grabbed my phone and took a picture, it was a cockroach! I had a small empty jar and was able to capture it and will address it with management. I will request a full refund, really... cockroach's that just disgusting and not at all expected.
- 4/5
I didn't like some hair on the bathroom floor and some dust on the ceiling fan -- I can tell they haven't dusted off for a long time. but that's not a big deal. I hoped I could turn off the ceiling fan but the light was on. The people at the reception were polite.
- 4/5
Hotel was great for the price! Felt very safe and comfortable. It wasn’t the cleanest hotel I’ve been to, though. There was a lot of hair in the bathroom.
- 3/5
* My bed had no bedspread - no quilt, duvet, nothing, despite the pics on the website. Just sheets. I requested one at the desk and they gave me a small blanket. Furthermore the bed had no fitted sheet, just another topsheet tucked around the mattress and over some kind of weird felt pad. It immediately came loose and made for a bad night of sleep. * The Internet was completely insufficient for any kind of work-related usage
- 3/5
The bathrooms could have been cleaner.
- 4/5
**for the price**, it is good. This is a very bare-bones hotel - no kettle, no fridge, no bar, no restaurant, no amenities. You can get hot water in the lobby, bring your own mug (only small plastic cups available), for example. But wifi was good, water hot, safe area, minimal (for downtown) noise, very-tall elegant ceilings, windows can open for fresh air (but no screens), bed was surprisingly comfy; hint: get a 2bed room to use the extra pillows and blanket.

I actually changed my accommodations at the last minute from a local 4-star property to the SF Plaza Hotel. And, I am SO glad I did. The room was perfect for my needs- fair price, quiet, clean, comfortable, plus a beautiful city view from my window! I would most definitely return again & highly recommend this hotel for even the most discerning of travelers.

Staff was extremely rude. I only brought enough cash to pay for the room and when I went to check in the lady at the front desk told me I need a $100 cash deposit that I would get back at the end so we needed to find an atm. The lady was extremely rude about it and when my friend left to go get some cash withdrawn she was talking with the other person at the desk insulting my friends and I in Spainish- not knowing that I understand Spainish well enough to understand what she is saying. When we went to check out they didn't want to give the $100 deposit back. The room was not clean. There was hair all in the bed sheets along with other signs that the sheets had not been cleaned. And to top it off the elevator was the single slowest one I've ever been on. You get what you pay for I guess. Also super hard to find parking anywhere around it.

The check in was great.felt welcomed. Location right next to China town. It was the school feeling. You used an actual key to open the door. The only complaint is that the bed was hard but other than that I would stay again.

The hotel area was a good area because it’s kinda busy since it’s right next to china town so when you’re walking around you’ll feel safe. The staff was really kind and they also had luggage storage available. The only issue we had was how outdated it was and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. I felt like I was sleeping on rocks. I did notice that every time someone flushed the toilet and you’re in the shower, the water gets hotter every time someone flushed. Also, the walls are so thin you could literally hear everyone in the room nearby or walking up and down the stairs. Overall, the staff were super kind and made us feel really comfortable during our stay!!!

The SF Plaza has great location and is a well-priced no frills hotel.

The staff at SF Plaza Hotel were very professional, the location was very central to where we wanted to be, and the price is very economical. My wife and I stayed here for New Year's Eve, and had a very minimal commute to the festivities.
