The hotel is praised for its convenient location, historical charm, and friendly staff. Guests appreciate the affordability and cleanliness, but some express concerns about the shared bathrooms and small room sizes.

More of a hostel than a hotel. Not very clean. No breakfast. No TVs. Small rooms. Narrow halls. Shared bathrooms and showers. Not terrible but not great. You get what you pay for so as long as you’re just looking for a room and a bed then this place is okay.

A unique stay in the North Beach area. Booked the hotel due to walkability to Pier 39, Fisherman's Warf, and Pier 27 for a Princess Cruise. We are in good shape, took BART from SFO to Embarcadero and then walked 1.5 miles with carry-on luggage and a personal item to the hotel. A pretty direct route along Columbus gets you to the hotel, but it is a bit up hill at times. You also must carry your luggage up 2 flights of stairs. The hotel is historic with renovations to some rooms. We preferred the privacy of a double bed with ensuite shower and bathroom. However if you don't mind a shared shower and toilet area, these were well maintained and always seemed to be available when we walked by. You can book a less expensive private room with shared bathroom and shower area. These rooms were like a hostel, but are likely much nicer than a traditional hostel. There are sinks outside the shared showers with blow dryers and a few necessities provide like Q tips and makeup remover pads. The rooms are very small but contain the essential elements needed for a short stay. The rooms, towels and sheets were very clean. The noise level depends on what is going on outside, but on a weekday after dark it was very quiet. We always felt safe walking to and from the hotel. The coffee machine is fantastic after 7am in the morning. Only issue was a leaky shower door, but management kindly provided extra towels to catch the water outside the shower. Great dining nearby! Trader Joe's 1 block up

The hotel is truly unique. The staff member was very helpful and the rooms were adequate and modern. I was assigned a room on the third floor. I got settled in and went to take a shower. For some reason the hot water in the room didn’t work. The staff member on duty found me a similar room and everything worked there. However, I think it was right above the restaurant kitchen. I could hear the banging and all the noise associated with a kitchen. It was very annoying. It finally quieted down around 10ish but someone started back up with noise about 0400. Needless to say, sleeping peacefully was not going to be an option. Perhaps, it would have been quieter on the third floor rather than the second floor. I did opt for the room with a private bathroom. The hotel was built in 1906, so it’s quirky. It felt like an old western saloon hotel. While my room was very clean, the lobby area smelled like cat pee. It was an experience. San Francisco is amazing. And I had a wonderful time.

I lucked out with a corner room with a private bathroom (key). Hotel smelled like cleaning solution which could be worse. My room must of had a vent connecting to the restaurant downstairs because my room smelled like the spaghetti sauce they were whipping up early in the morning every morning. It smelled so good I went down to the restaurant to try some. (worth it) Thin walls which was anticipated with the age of the building but I brought my portable white noise machine and that solved any issue. Great location. Humble/ affordable stay. No complaints over here. Thanks San Remo!

Disappointing
- 2.5/5
The location is great. The decor reflects the early 1900s, creating a unique and historic atmosphere that adds character and authenticity to the property. Overall, the stay was enjoyable thanks to the excellent location and the unique historic character of the property. While the age of the building contributes to its charm, the cleanliness and maintenance fell short of expectations, and there was a strong unpleasant odor during the stay. With better upkeep and more thorough cleaning, the property could provide a much better guest experience.

Charming interior feels like stepping back to old San Francisco. Decor and furniture nostalgic and historical. Nice natural lighting. Shared bathrooms clean. There are many inviting nooks to sit and read or scroll. Lots of stairs to reception and rooms, be ready for that. The first room we were assigned was very stuffy with no windows to the outside. It was impossibly hot (a blessing on cold SF days, but this was not one of them). The staff were helpful and understanding, and thankfully were able to move us to another room.

The uniqueness and quaintness of the place. The lack of bathroom and toilet facilities as they were being renovated

The room itself was OK. well, the place is a wreck. they are fixing or remodeling a ton of rooms and there's chaos everywhere. This place used to be funky and cool, but no idea whats going on and they looks like they are turning some into modern? Makes no sense with such an ornate building. this is one of those things where whoever owns it now has no idea what the San Remo was cool to begin with. The communal bathrooms not too bad but one had a leak with a bucket under the toilet and it was full of water and over flowing. I won't stay there ever again with those changes and the construction chaos/noise.

Bugs in the room and bathrooms. Bathrooms and showers were questionable if they were cleaned. Felt slightly uncomfortable with the positioning of the window because people could see straight in if I wanted the blinds up. Not sure if bedding was ever changed as I found hair that was clearly not mine. Constantly overhearing people complaining of the same issues and even being checked into clearly dirty rooms.

The location was great. The room was very small with only a bed. We did choose a private bathroom which took up some space in the room. If there had been space available on the property with a place to sit to enjoy the coffee (machine was available for use in the foyer) it would have made the stay more enjoyable.

It is hard to beat an exceptional location for the price you pay to stay in the heart of city. The hotel is true treasure: vintage interior takes you to early 1900s. The room and spring beds remind you of times you slept sweetly at your great great great grandmas house. The distinct smell in the hallways signifies the grandmas old cat died somewhere behind the furniture. The line to only toilet on the floor refreshes your memory of sharing the restroom with siblings.

Incredible location and lots of charm A couple of the shared bathrooms were out of order and the shower had almost no water pressure

Excellent location very close to Fisherman's Wharf and the trolley cars. This is an excellent value for the location and what you get because keep in mind San Francisco is extremely expensive. We also liked the fact that there was a Trader Joe's supermarket 100 yards away so we did a lot of deli food shopping there to cut back on Restaurant pricing. I knew this when I booked but the room, it was really small. You have an option when you book to get a room with your own private bathroom and that's what we did. It was rather small as well but again, it was a great value for what we needed.

Precious little hotel that is maybe better described as a hostel. No elevators and shared bathroom which became a a little issue in the morning. Loads of antiques including a pull chain toilet!

- 2/5
This place is more of a museum than modern hotel. No main level... everyone need to do stairs. Shared bathrooms down the hall. Tiny rooms. NO parking.
- 4/5
I enjoyed the antique style of the hotel. Not a lot of privacy, the walls are really thin, and the water lines are connected so if you shower while the laundry is going then prepare for it to be a cold shower.
- 3.5/5
The location was excellent, very close to Fisherman's wharf and in a nice and quiet neighborhood. The staff was very friendly and offered very useful information on getting around the city. The hotel's decoration is really unique and charming. Apparently the place was being remodeled and works were going on from early in the morning. As a result, there was a lot of dust and the place was quite dirty (a piece of chocolate spilled on the stairs sat there for 3 days). The room was very small and dark, with only one window facing the inner reception, so no natural light at all. There was also no ventilation, the room feelt very stuffy and hot and there was only a ceiling fan.
- 2/5
This place is good if you're trying to save money and you want to be in a good location. However, it's incredibly loud due to the fact that it's an old building. You will need ear plugs to sleep through the night. It also smalls incredibly musty, and you can tell how old it is. Which is cool for a history lesson but really not ideal if you want to feel comfortable. The bathroom and sinks being in the hallway is not ideal, and kind of gross, but that's the reality with an old property like this. Great location and amazing resurant below. Get the HH Cheese, meat and bread plate for $7. Sooo good. But overall worth paying more for a better place.

It was definitely the best choice in San Francisco, considering price/quality ratio. Yes, the hotel looks having a long history, however overall condition is great. There are a few things which I would like to point out here: 1. The night price is quite affordable; 2. Toilets and bathrooms are regularly maintained in clean and tidy, you don't even think they are shared ones. 3. There are coffee machine and microwave oven in the hall. 4. There is a Trader Joe's convenience store just nearby and 5. This area is easily accessible by public transport. Additionally, I would like to mention that towels in the room were changed on daily basis, and the reception personnel proved to be welcoming and professional. I will definitely consider this hotel when returning to San Francisco. I do not really know what owners could improve here. Everything is well above expectations. Well done!

The front desk staff was kind and polite. The location is great, the linens were clean and in good condition. The pillows and bed were a bit of an issue but is minor and I still slept comfortably. I would definitely stay here again, it’s a block a way from cobb’s comedy club and a short distance from north beach.

This is, if memory serves my 7th time staying at San Remo Hotel, one the oldest hotels in SF 1906. There are so many reasons. Forst i love the historical nature of the place and especially how the current owner keep that quality of the hotel alive. Yes the value for me is exceptional as is the staff, who very resolve issues that may arise , they are very very helpful. The location is a big plus, not far from North Beach local and legendary nite spots. The "Fior d'Italia" establish in 1886, amazing Italian Food , the "Tortelloni Alla Panna" is extrodianry, as is the service. Big stars all around.

Interesting stay option! I like the historical side of things, and the location is great. I was able to walk to many areas along the Piers, which was nice. Good value overall, not perfect but a solid option for the money and location. There wasn't heat directly available into the room, which made my first night quite cold in December. However I was able to request a portable heater at the front desk, and that seemed to fix the problem. Shared bathrooms are always a mixed bag, these were OK.

There was construction going on inside the hotel and it was quite dirty and loud. The hotel smelled like cigarette smoke and it was dusty. You have to walk up two flights of stairs and there is no elevator / they won’t help with your bags.

It’s hard to describe how dirty and disgusting this place is. We left within 10 minutes of checking in. There were filthy wet towels in the hall on the floor, the carpets are black with dirt, the tiles are falling off if the shower walls. Do not stay here. I would give this a negative score if I could.

I've stayed at the San Remo before and understand that it is a little funky, but it's affordable and in a good neighborhood. The problem this time was that they are apparently doing remodeling. I found this out when the power tools and hammering started at 8am. They were tearing out sheetrock a couple of rooms away and carrying out the hallway in front of my room. This is definitely something that they should have been mentioned when I made the reservation. (There was also nothing in the hotel and no mention when I checked in.) I knew I would be out until 1am or so, and decided to not drive back to Sacramento and to stay in SF so I could get a good night's sleep. I would have found another option if I'd known what would be happening so early in the morning.

I loved the historical building and the history that follows the property. I didn’t mind having a bathroom across the hall. They were clean and no waits. The room was very small and sparse of furniture . …but I guess that’s how it was in 1906. The biggest complaint I have is the mattress in the room. It was old and it was a spring mattress that had very little filling. I constantly hurt my chins, ankles and hip getting into the bed. The outside edge of the mattress has a metal ridge. If I needed to turn over in bed and used my elbow that too was painful… I loved the historical place but the owners need to replace the mattress with a new one or at least get toppers. A good night sleep was not possible because every position was uncomfortable due to the lumpy mattress .. I was in room 50. The location was great… The price was great too but not the sleep.

Clean, quaint, and comfortable. Convenient to what we wanted to do. No frills. Room was small but the hotel has such charm. Somewhat of a boutique upscale hostel. Some rooms share hallway private bathrooms. Ours didn’t.

Classic Barbary Coast hotel, with 19th century photos and artifacts, lacy curtains, redwood trim. Bathrooms were communal but clean and well appointed. Rooms small but well furnished in a period style. Very historic vibe but generally clean and well run. Staff were uniformly great.

Room was very comfortable and staff were very nice. Everything is very old, which I loved, but there’s no AC or heating and the bathrooms are shared and down the hall so you have to be prepared for that. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you’re looking for a rustic room to use just for sleeping.

Hotel is old with lots of stairs but it has character/history. Room was small and had shared bathrooms/ showers down the hallway. It did have a sink in the room. We were in town for a concert so just needed a place to sleep. It is walking distance to coffee shop across the street, restaurants and to Pier 39. Neighborhood was clean and felt safe oppossed to other areas of SF. Staff was friendly and helpful.

The manager was very accommodating when I complained and I was moved to a lower level room where I still could not lock my window but did not feel as exposed since there was no direct access except for the room next to mine which had a window access. This room had a latch on the door that worked. The whole hotel was old. I tried to figure out if it was old charming or old, old. I think it is the later. Like right out of 1900. Location is great. Most of the rooms are not en suite, they are rooms with one communal bathroom per floor. I did not realize this when I booked :(

I know it's the room as it was originally built, but not a lot of room. It's ok. Had a place to put our heads down. A home base for a while. It was a new experience. And it was fine.

A double room was the size of a walk-in closet. No bathroom. If you're willing to pay$200 a night for a dorm, then this might work out.

San Remo is located between Fisherman's Warf and North Beach. It's just a short walk from so many good restaurants, tour companies, the cable cars, and even Chinatown. The hotel itself is charming and the staff is friendly. As other reviewers have noted, the rooms are tiny and have very little insulation. So, if your neighbors are having a lound conversation, you will hear it. I would also mention that the hotel is on the 2nd and 3rd floor of a building over a restaurant. It would not be a good place to stay if you can't climb stairs. Bottom line, this hotel fit my needs well. And, for the price, it can't be beat. I would stay there again.

Room 30 was admittedly tiny, and there wasn't a lot of surface area to put things down - However, if you're a couple who gets along and can live snug & you like to walk about to many of the area's sights, this is a great spot. The Cilantro Taqueria and Italian restaurant literally steps away. Breakfast is just up the street at Cafe Capriccio - it's really good and usually busy, worth the wait.

Great hotel and area was very close to pier 39. The hotel makes a great experience of what it was like back in the early 20th century, however with community bathrooms they should be cleaned more often.

My stay at San Remo was great. It is a very quaint hotel. You feel as though you have stepped back in time or are in England. The room was small but I wasn’t in it other than to sleep. The bed was comfortable. The shared toilets and bathrooms on each level were clean. I never had to wait to use the toilets, showers, or sinks. The hotel is walking distance to the Fisherman's Wharf. It is also walking distance to many amazing Italian restaurants because of its proximity to North Beach. It was easy to access Waymo (driverless ride) or Uber/Lyft from the hotel if you wanted to go farther distances such as the San Francisco Botanical Gardens or the Presidio.

There's a restaurant right downstairs and the kitchen noise is constant, I'm talking from 7 in the morning all the way until 11:30pm or later at night, sounded like there was heavy construction going on right next to our room! or as if they moved furniture and tore walls all day/night, plus you can hear the kitchen staff chatter very loudly!! horrible! The hotel staff was very attentive and apologetic, offered to move us to another room but we walked throughout the hotel and the noise was heard everywhere! Stayed 4 nights and barely slept. It's an old hotel, so it smells like old/dirty/musty carpets. Rooms are small, they don't have TVs. If you've watched "Little house on the prairie" you'll find this hotel exactly as one you may see in that show. So, I'd visit again for a night or two only because of the location, friendly staff and affordable prices, but if I'm staying longer I rather pay the extra $$ for a newer/cleaner/quieter hotel with my own bathroom.

Hot water took a extremely long time to arrive early in the morning, but otherwise showers were good. The place was under heavy renovation during the day, I was not made aware of that, but it was finished before every evening and they had dust under control. The listing for the hotel made it look like the rooftop terrace was accessible to all guest, but it is reserved to guests who reserve the penthouse room only, misleading.

This is a marvelous little gem in a great location. There is no central heat or AC, so if you arrive on a frigid night, check your wardrobe for a space heater. The hot water is mid-warm at best and it took several minutes to flow from ice cold to bearable every single time I turned on the tap. I’d stay here again, but only in the summer.

This is a cute older building with nicely decorated "antique" rooms. It's basically a "bed and breakfast" type hotel, minus the breakfast area. The rooms are small, with just maybe a small chair and a sink in the room. But here are a lot of shower and toilet areas, a cluster of two showers and two toilets for every group of rooms, on several floors. Everything is nicely done, with privacy and convenience in mind. So if you are looking for five-star services and a brand new type hotel, this isn't it. But if you want a clean, beautiful "bed and breakfast' type hotel in a great location, this is perfect.

Great location and vibe. I was only there for 1 night but would gladly stay there again.

Beautiful building with loads of character. Very comfortable and clean. Well located, short walk to the piers and into the Italian sector. Well connected to local public transport. Helpful staff and great amenities.

Quiet and good value if you don't mind a shared bathroom down the hall. Safe area, near to Columbus Ave and a short walk to Fishermans Wharf. I first stayed here in 1999 and it hasnt changed a lot which is a good thing!
- 3/5
The rooms smelled of some kind of terrible perfume which aggravated my allergies. It was probably some kind of spray to mask odors. The bathrooms were clean. It was one step above a youth hostel. It had a very interesting history. Very quiet.
- 4/5
First time to San Francisco. We felt safe staying here. We were able to park in a covered garage close by & walk so the Warf! We also Ubered some places! Staff was friendly & helpful. Neat place to stay. Need to be ok w/ bathroom & showers down the hall. We enjoyed the historic hotel!
- 5/5
For the price it can’t be beat it’s like a high end hostel and I definitely recommend

It was more than I expected. Loved the Victorian feel and look. Owner and staff very friendly. It should only get nothing but good good reviews.

The hotel is quite central. I have to say all of the staff were very nice, helpful. Kudos to the housekeeping staff they keep hotel in excellent shape, rooms & bathroom/showers were always spotless.
- 5/5
I liked the vibe of the property. Everything was pretty close by walking, even the bus stop. Trader Joe’s down the street if you want to buy snacks or meals. The only thing is that it can get loud in the morning when cars are driving by. Other than that, I loved it! 5/5

Loved the old style bathrooms! Staff was super friendly. Great location that is close to everything!
- 5/5
We stayed here because it was 4 min walk to cable car. Yes, it is not a usual hotel. But it is a History! Was so much fun, free coffee, oldest Italian restaurant at the same building. All people been so nice, front, neighbors. Just one complain. They said they have a ghost, i didnt see it. And i was looking haha. Very great memories, great place.
- 3/5
A quaint little cozy hotel in a great location. The price is insane and hard to match. Main complaint is parking is a hassle… we tried to utilize street parking nearby and ended up with a $90 ticket.
- 5/5
Helpful staff and a super location at an affordable price. Although the rooms aren’t large, you get a hotel with history and character.
- 4/5

It was like staying with my Grandmother. You have your own room but share the bathroom with others. Definitely worth the value. Would stay again. I was traveling solo.
- 5/5
Great place
- 5/5
It was so quaint! Definitely loved the charm and it was all we needed for the few days that we were here!
- 5/5
The property manager was there and he was super kind.He let me know that they stay on the property and if there was anything that I needed I could always call them.Of course , I did not have to. The property was a vintage /old victorian type of house With restrooms that are shared on each corridor So like in a home, the house is clean, but sometimes the kids don't clean their mess.Meaning sometimes, you might have to grab a Paper towel and Wipe the sink after you've brushed your teeth, and please, Make sure the toilet is flushed😝 , so the next person could use it.After your shower, rinse it down and pick up your strands of your hair and get it out of the tub /shower, floor, for the next guest.🤔. Be courteous and pick up after yourself. Everybody really loved this property.🥰☺️😎
- 5/5
A great walk through San Francisco past..
- 4/5
So unique and charming! In a great and walkable neighborhood. Very close to tourist attractions. My only complaint is the pillows. They were hard as rocks and worn down to thin pads!
- 5/5
Very charming place. Good for people who like history. Staff is extremely helpful.
- 5/5
Very quaint hotel from days gone by in an excellent location in San Fran. Would def stay here again. Staff was awesome, coffee/expresso/tea available, great recommendations, and it reminded me of the boarding house Jo stayed in from Little Women. Just so quaint. Stop in at Tony’s pizza and Nanoking restaurants. Incredible food.
- 5/5
This was my second time here, and once again it didn’t disappoint! All the charm of San Remo makes me not care about the shared bathrooms. Feels like home rather than just the basic hotel feel
- 5/5
First off this is a shared bathroom hotel that is really clean. Our room was small with no TV no sink or ice machine. I rate this as a 5 because it’s location and how much fun my wife and I had while here. Granted we only were in the room at night but the staff was super helpful and if we come back again, just the wife and I, we will be staying here. There are 3 levels and no elevator so if you can’t walk, this is not an option. If it’s more than just the 2 traveling it might make it challenging. Kids would have to be the kind that is just thankful for a vacation to enjoy this place. Chirag and staff were on point and I loved it so much. There are rumors of it being haunted but I did not witness anything, too bad, maybe next time. We loved this place
- 1/5
There was no mention that the bathroom and shower were shared. It felt like a place where the homeless would live. The noise was unbearable, making it impossible to sleep. We ended up going home because staying there was out of the question. I'd rather sleep under a bridge with the homeless than stay in this hotel. I demand a refund. I wouldn't stay here even if they paid me.
- 5/5
It was clean and safe. Excellent location for walking to the beach or Chinatown. I loved the older building and how they kept it very historical. I absolutely would stay again
- 5/5
Great place
- 5/5
The hotel features charming vintage styles, which I appreciate. The communal bathroom was clean and well-organized. Although I prefer having a TV, I understand it's an affordable hotel.
- 4/5
A fun property, very historic. Wouldn’t want to bring kids and anyone with mobility issues as there were a lot of stairs and the walls were very thin. But great for a unique experience close to fisherman’s wharf.
- 4/5
Coffee was provided in the morning which was better than expected, but still hotel coffee. Overall great experience and we are going to book again!
- 4/5
It was conveniently located to all the attractions around San Francisco in the Pier 39
- 4/5
Then conveniently located to all the sites in the pier Convenient conveniently located to all the sites in pier
- 4/5
Lots of very good dining options within walking distance as well as Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. I was impressed with housekeeping. They checked on me every day. Provided fresh towels and changed the sheets if I wanted. I loved the Peet's coffee machine in the lobby.
- 5/5
It was a new adventure as far as hotel stays; room was tiny bed not so comfy but it was well worth it and cool!
