Bring a white noise machine! We had ours cranked as loud as possible so we were able to drown out the music blasting in the building next door/street level. There’s nowhere to pull up and unload luggage out front — you have to park in the garage across the street, walk everything over, and then check in. Staff is really great, property is small and old but really unique + lots of character. Worked for us as a single night stay, probably wouldn’t be comfy for longer than that

The location was perfect. The staff is friendly. There was a weird smell in the corridors, and the walls are so thin you can hear pretty much every conversation next door. Also, there are no USB-C ports in the rooms. I get that the building is old, but it’s 2026, they should’ve updated something as basic as that.

Great location within walking distance of many cafes, coffee shops, and tourist attractions. The bed is comfortable. The location is a historic building and due to this, and the location near a tunnel, is VERY noisy. Ear plugs are provided but you may also need noise canceling headphones.

The hotel was so cute and I absolutely loved the location!!

Location was pretty good in downtown, the bar had live music and nice vibes. Easy check in Room was exceptionally small which I guess I should’ve realised earlier, also faced into brick wall. Nowhere to put anything and barely any space for luggage or to walk around the bed. The street was a bit dodgy as some unhoused people hanging out in the car park opposite

So clean, well-designed, smelled great, nice shampoo and body wash, clean, great bar, loved the gummies, such friendly workers Single elevator was slow at times, but not that bad, and kind of cool it's a historic elevator

Very beautiful interior in old historical building with new furniture. Thanks for the European type of bedding. I had some problems with an AC, staff gave me a new room and was very helpful. Nice bar on 2d floor It’s a little bit loud area, but you need to expect that while living in the city centre. Not the hotels fault

Palihotel is a great brand of hotels and this location doesn’t disappoint. Iconic Union Square is a block away and Chinatown is on the other side of Stockton tunnel. Our only feedback/wish is that the windows would be insulated for sound. The city is very noisy until the wee hours but the hotel does have earplugs in the room. Overall we enjoyed the stay.

Location was good for first timers, even though the Market Street (really close) is not well-frequented. The wifi didn't work well in the room. The room barely had natural light. Windows with no view, it felt like an interior room.
- 3.5/5
Convenient, central location. Spacious bathroom, but the room was incredibly cramped. There was maybe a foot of space to walk between the foot of the bed and the wall of the bathroom/bathroom door. The elevator broke on our last night and we were on the 7th floor, that was a terrible inconvenience.

I love staying at the Pali hotels. My room was extraordinary, big and very clean. The staff was very friendly when I checked in and helped me get accommodated. You are very close to Union square and lots of shopping nearby. By gray parking across the street or around the block

Very old hotel. Very loud noise by the street.. we will never stay at this place again
- 4/5
Cool decor, good location and friendly staff. The only comment is that it would be great if they provided a bottle like water or at least a water station where we can fill a bottle.

It was good next to Chinatown and close to downtown

Perfect central stay with helpful staff! Great decor & lovely bar/restaurant area. Would definitely reccomend
- 5/5
Very nice small hotel near union square, rooms are very clean and comfortable, staff is very friendly, professional, and accommodating. The bar on the 2nd floor is a must!
- 3.5/5
Single glazed windows meant it was loud and the air con didn't work, this wasn't a huge deal for us as we didn't spend much time in the room
- 5/5
Clean, spacious rooms. Very aesthetic decorations, cute lobby. Really neat old style elevator. Walking distance to a lot of sights, very close to the Chinatown Dragon gate. Parking nearby, easy in/out system. Really nice 2nd floor bar & restaurant. Staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations for the area! We enjoyed our stay!
- 5/5
Technically the shower floor was very slippery and the sink was very small, so I would not recommend for elderly.
- 5/5
The staff (the bartender, the nigh receptionist and their manager, Will) made my week long stay great! They were friendly and went above and beyond. The only thing that business travelers need to know is that the rooms DO NOT have a table so you can't actually work in the room - though they did bring me a small table I was able to pull up to the sofa to use. This is NOT a business friendly hotel - I had to hunt for an outlet for my laptop. And strangely my room was not serviced for 5 days - I had to ask the front desk twice for someone to take out the trash and to provide more toilet paper and fresh towels.
- 4/5
Clean and well appointed rooms - always a solid option

The hotel was very clean, the staff extremely helpful, and the hotel is very convenient to meals and shopping. Reasonable price. It’s kind of dark and dingy—it’s a very old building and could use some lighter color interior paint. The bathroom was very modern, although the shower a bit weak, and the sink tiny. You can tell they really have done the best they can with an old building, and some off-white paint would go a long way to brightening it up.

To compound these issues, within 5 minutes of arriving, someone from a conjoined room knocked on our door to complain he could hear our entire conversation, which wasnt loud. This tracks with the setting, as we were routinely woken up by clamorous racket of every stripe for the duration of our stay, and later heard similar from another guest, who said "paper thin walls" were apparently "a thing here." This would have been semi-excusable with a refund of any appreciable amount, but the desk clerk said he wasnt authorized to refund more than $50, and offered his condolences. This hotel is apparently guilty of leaning hard on its historic landmark status for upselling during holidays, when it would do better to issue renovations to keep them out of flophouse designation. The one redeeming feature was their midnight hotel clerk, who was able to check us in at a very late hour. But given the cost, and general experience, that hardly justifies a starry review. Unless you're here for the ghosts, steer clear.

We always look for bigger rooms, that have a table or a desk, so we booked the bigger room. The location was central to Union Square. We walked a lot and used the public transport systems (get the Clipper application). The restaurant and bar are great with musicians often playing. The menu in the restaurant was a little limited for my non seafood eating husband.

I didn’t like how close the bathroom was to the bed. It was hard to walk by and also the sink and toilet were too low. The shower didn’t have a curtain so the water kept spilling out. There were lots of noises from upstairs but I assume thats from other guests.

The Pali was great value for money for our short trip in San Francisco. The hotel was walkable to lots of places - just a 25 or so minute walk down to the Ferry Building and walking distance to areas like North Beach. Just a few minutes from Union Square and lots of shopping. The room was small but comfortable and nicely designed. Not much of a view, but we weren't expecting one. The decor throughout is chic but cosy and a mix of old school glam and modern touches. The bar upstairs was very nice with friendly staff and good selection of drinks and food. We were really impressed by how good value the place was for being in central SF! We would definitely recommend it to others looking for an affordable option in the city.

The area it is in isn’t very safe after dark and sketchy at best during the day. ( pic attached of the area directly next to the hotel front door). I arrived to my room and within 5 mins the toilet backed up and it took them about 2 hours to handle the issue with little to no communication of what was happening and ETA on work etc. The hallway area directly next to my room (514) is a temp linen closet with workers constantly going in and out making noise. ( pic attached). The last straw for me though was when I ordered a lovely glass of red wine at the 2nd floor resto to take to my room and the bartender poured it in to a white paper cup saying they can’t let glasses leave the resto. I travel for work all the time and have never had that happen before. Insane. This hotel was a major bummer in all areas and has made me reconsider the Pali brand as a whole. I would avoid this property in S.F at all costs!

We love the location and the staff is very friendly. I will have to say though, I am not sure if the waste management trash service is on Saturday mornings for this location. It was very noisy early Saturday morning with the sounds of bottles being broken in the alley closest to our room.

The Hotel used to commandeer high rates which is why I had to seek alternatives and replaced this SF property as our mainstay because the city simply had better value propositions. When they recently dropped the rates significantly I gave it another try with 3 bookings and I have had nothing but complaints from our travelers. - Non functioning AC on multiple occasions with no option to change rooms because the "entire floor had no AC", - Windows painted shut, -water spots from leaks everywhere, -electric outlets dangerously violating safety codes. When problems are brought to the attention of the Front Desk it is at best met with a shoulder shrug, if not with an almost mouthy attitude and the most compensation a traveler can expect is to have the "destination fee" refunded. Pretty daring to ask for one to begin with when not even the basic expectations can be met. Sorry to see this once cute hotel fall into disrepair like this. We will be taking our business elsewhere.

Service - 9/10. Staff were all so kind and accommodating. Love the text-centric front desk service. Fairly quick to respond. Location - 9/10. Hard to beat. If it wasn’t for the overall experience, esp for sleep, I would consider coming back bc of the location. Experience - 4/10. It was SO LOUD. Zero insulation from the outside and hallway noises. You can hear trucks, beeping, yelling, etc as clear as day. Didn’t sleep well.

We were able to walk a short distance to shopping, various dining options and transportaion inlcuding the cable cars and a stop on the train from the aiport. We stayed 8 nights and we will definitely be staying here again.

Our recent stay at the Palihotel San Francisco was everything we hoped for in a home away from home. The hotel’s unique charm and stylish decor gave it real character, and its location made exploring the city effortless. It was easy to grab a rideshare, and we were within walking distance of several popular spots for food and drinks. One standout feature was the vintage elevator—one of the oldest in the city—which added a nostalgic touch to our stay. Check-in was seamless, thanks to Rachel, who made us feel instantly welcome. We’ll absolutely be back!

We felt like we weren’t taken care of properly or being prioritized and the situation could have gone more smoothly if it was handled that Friday night. Or handled while we were gone for 2 hours at breakfast. Not only was the room hot especially after our showers and getting ready, we had to open the door wide open to the hallway to let hot air out, the beds are uncomfortable (not soft, at all) and every single pillow was flat. Overall, I would never come back to this hotel ever again and would never recommend it. Look elsewhere or good luck!

It is a reasonably pleasant hotel. I did not sleep a wink. Despite the double glazing, a construction site started up outside. The soundproofing internally is below par. The bed and sheets were brilliant, however, if you like pillows like enormous marshmallows, and I don’t, you will have a swell time. I don’t think I will come back.

The elevator had issues, but worked. My problem was the plumbing. Our toilet clogged twice. The 2nd time the maintenance person told us not to flush toilet paper! At least that happened the morning we were leaving. The rooms are fine but small.

A chaotic check in followed by non-functioning AC left for an uncomfortable stay and I would not come back. Some cute design elements but this place has a long way to go on the hospitality front. They gave me a room by the trash areas so waking up to large trash bins moving around was not fun.

so cute & aesthetic. decent location (right around is like a city center, maybe not the nicest vibe in my opinion) but then 2 minute walk to china town which is amazing!!! very central!! The biggest thing was the noise, you could hear EVERYTHING. If you are a light sleeper, I do not recommend. It took me hours to fall asleep every night since it was so noisy. Other than that, I recommend!

I love that the interior of the hotel does make you feel retro while it is aesthetically pleasing and clean. The lobby is very neat though small which we expected. This is an older hotel so don’t have the mindset that it is going to be like any other hotel chains. They have an elevator that is from 1910 and was really fun to experience. It was tiny but I am just grateful we didn’t have to climb 7 flights of stairs. The room was again very tiny but worked perfect for my husband and I. The bed and room was clean. Our room looked back at the building where we could just see pipes but honestly it was fine when the blinds were closed. Now for some things that put us off. We arrived at 1pm and couldn’t check in til 3pm. We had them hold our bags behind their magic curtain door. I needed to change so I asked to use a restroom. The front desk allowed me in through a door at the back of the hallway of the lobby, which lead to the hotels storage room, employee room I assumed as a few men were laying on couches back there, and a bathroom. The bathroom smelled strongly of urine and I was honestly afraid to touch anything back there. My recommendation is to just not use the lobby bathroom as it was a bit sketchy. The rooms AC was essentially non existent, so be prepared for the room to be hot. I couldn’t get the windows to open either which I assume for safety.

Quaint and peaceful stay. The staff are very accommodating and friendly! In terms of proximity, this area is very close to nearby neighborhoods (Chinatown, SoMA) so most of the main areas we visited were very walkable. If not, the bus and MUNI stations were close by. The building itself is old, but they keep it well-maintained (the elevator is unique; I never been in one like it! ) and the inside is decorated nicely. Didn't get the chance to check out the bar + restaurant during my stay but I most certainly will be returning in the future. Thank you Palihotel!

The hotel is clean and nicely decorated with friendly staff, however it is LOUD. You can hear every noise on the street and rooms are positioned with the bed right up to the wall facing the main road. We could also hear everything in the adjoining room, including the person staying in that room blasting music and singing at 6:30 am. It was as if he was in our room with us, the door provided no sound barrier. It is fine for a basic hotel, but ear plugs are a necessity, and even then you will likely hear noise.

The original room when we check in AC does not work. They don't have phone in the room, and I call front desk from my phone but no answer. we have to go back to lobby. they have 1 Elevator was old style took times to go up and down. The front desk changes our room right away but did not apologies or offer any service. We move luggage by ourselves. The new room was fine. Feel dusty on carpet and visible dust on furniture. Overnight the AC buzzing loud noise throughout the night. Around 6 am very loud construction noise however, we didn't report. Only thing I like is the bathroom is high ceiling have rainfall shower and didn't feel too cramp. Overall, you get what you pay for. It is alright for a hotel this price.

So cute!! And such a great price. Everything about the hotel is so perfect and high quality! The rooms are adorable and bathrooms have diptyque products. The bar/lounge had really interesting drinks and also a live jazz performance in the evenings. Perfect location too! Right in the middle of union square. Public transport was super accessible from here. Highly recommend to anyone just trying to explore SF and wants to stay at a place that fits the vibe and elevates the experience.

The trash gets collected around 3:45am. That will be a strong wake up call. It is very noisy. It’s an older building that has some upgrades. Too bad they did not add any sound dampening to the windows or walls when they remodeled.

Great check in. It had been brought up that on our last visit there was a big storm/tornado warning and it was a fun experience but our ceiling had a tiny leak. (Not a huge deal at all) He decided to make our stay extra comfortable this time by giving us a free upgrade. Super friendly great staff. Prompt responses via the txt communication as well.

2. The room was just the right size for me. Very well laid out, too. 3. There are no safety bars in the shower. The shower points straight down; a slight angle would help.

This property looked adorable on Expedia but fell short. We checked in around midnight due to a late flight and checked in to find the heat pump not working. The front desk staff gave us fans, but there were no outlets to plug them in. We opened the window, but there were no screens. The next day they moved us to a new room. Maid service didn’t clean the room on our third day, which we didn’t expect. Decor was pretty good, but the room was incredibly small. Probably would not stay there again.

I liked the price, and the location is good. The room lacked adequate lighting above the sink, an outlet by the sink that looked like it was coming out of the wall, no working TV, and no coffee...these aren't real life problems...but it's why they are getting a 3. The staff was nice and helpful (although no one was at the front desk for check in for about 20 minutes). This is my second time in three years staying there and I am on the fence I would stay there again. Maybe. Try for the price and see. It's a cute place.

I liked the text communication from the front desk. The location was slightly inconvenient for my ride to the airport to pick me up— I walked around the corner with my suitcase and waited in front of a busy fast food/retail area, but again— it’s a big city and I get it. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a solo traveler or couple wanting to see the city. It’s super close to Chinatown and Union Square.

+ The room is spacious enough (for SF) and rather recently decorated. - During my 6-day stay the room was only made up twice, and towels were only replaced once. -- In addition, the clogged toilet was only fixed after 2 days (!), despite reporting it to reception several times.

Hotel très bien situé. accueil très sympa. Chambre très correcte pour le prix. Nous avons testé le bar, restaurant et nous le recommandons fortement

The man at the front desk was awful and clueless. He did get his manager on the phone. She was trying to be more helpful, but I guess the man at the front desk gave away our room to someone else.. we left not sure where to go wasted money on parking, let alone now we ass in a really sketch area in SF. They are supposed to be refunding us so we are still currently waiting for that
- 4/5
Staff and room were great. Only negative was the elevator being down at the time.
- 4/5
Good enough. Location isn't bad, close to Chinatown, North Beach and Union Square. Very nicely decorated. Not a good option if you need to work remotely, as the wi-fi did not work the whole time I was there and the only other spot to sit aside from the bed is a tiny table and chairs. The elevator was very old and I was nervous using it but it seemed to hold up fine. Some issues with toilet plumbing and being able to flush, but shower water was hot and good pressure. Sink is very small. They had free water fill up in the lobby but noticed it was removed later into the night. Provided good assortment of snacks and drinks in the room for an extra charge, but not a lot of other free options. Be mindful if you need to use the restroom before check in, the lobby bathroom is through the back employee kitchen which seemed sketchy at first. VERY LOUD. You can hear everyone in the hallways and late night construction in the city. They provide ear plugs which was my saving grace. Overall, good for a cheaper solo travel option

- 5/5
The staff was very polite and the hotel itself was gorgeous. I stayed for a quick weekend and It was close to a lot of beautiful sightseeing areas and Chinatown which had a large variety of art and food! Would definitely recommend!
- 3/5
Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the stylish atmosphere. While the staff was friendly, they seemed out of touch with true customer service. The elevator was broken during our stay, meaning we had to walk up and down five flights of stairs. While that wasn’t a huge issue in itself, the hotel never offered any sort of accommodation for the inconvenience. Instead, we were repeatedly told it would be fixed “tomorrow,” but it felt like an ongoing issue. Overall, it wasn’t a terrible stay, but it didn’t stand out either. With so many other hotels to choose from in the area, I’d probably try somewhere else next time.
- 1/5
the air conditioner didn't work, I tried to sleep in a cold room, it was impossible, we changed the room but there was the same problem, the elevator didn't work and I had to go up the stairs to the 4th floor, I don't recommend this hotel, they are obviously unprofitable.

Bathroom is also small but ectopic you need. Well definitely return to this place. Super convenient location. One block from union Square. Hop on any bus across the street and go to North Beach (about 6 stops) and enjoy some italian food or gonto the corner store and get some wine and go back to the hotel and relax. Bar/ restaurant is nice, a bit too pricey in my book.cocktails are above 17 $...... Friendly staff though. Overall... cute gem worth staying at. Only complaint: tv has soe channels and no access to youtube or ability to screen mirror, so bring your HDMI cable and your laptop to prevent watching a movie with 50 mins of ads for a 90 min movie 😎 (Fridge is in the room, drinks and candy as well in a basket but no prices on the menu. Also, coffee machine with pods, but unclear if it's complimentary or not Final verdict: Stayed at many SF hotels (work in that industry) and try them out, that's my favorite so far.
- 4/5
It was great for the price! Everything worked fine and I enjoyed my stay. Only thing I had a problem with was the WIFI. It took a long time to connect to my laptop and it kept kicking me out. I was on the 4th floor. Other than that I enjoyed my stay!
- 4/5

Excellent hotel. The rooms are classic SF.

I've stayed at this Pali location multiple times from when it first opened to now. This time felt different. Can't really pinpoint it. Staff was super helpful with moving rooms because the TV was broken in the original room we were assigned to. Having the text to contact staff option is nice. Downside to this property is that the rooms get pretty warm and the temperature control only goes to 67 degrees which I understand why. So if you run warm, this might not be the place for you. Also, the elevator is old and slow. Not a deterrent to stay here by any means, just an FYI. Parking is convenient, public garage right across the street and they offer overnight parking now for $20 (in after 6pm and out before 9am the next morning) so that is nice.
