The property was well maintained in the heart of San Francisco. The staff was exceptional and made me feel like I was coming home each day. Steve was kind, personable, professional and knowledgeable about the area. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and I had close proximity to a multitude of delectable food spots. If you’re in the San Fran area, The Orchard is an excellent option for lodging!

Excellent location on Bush St, right on the edge of Union Square and Nob Hill, close to public transport, cable car, SFMOMA and Chinatown, and walkable to Embarcadero North Beach. It feels safe and away from the sketchy areas.

This is a lovely hotel and the staff was amazing, would definitely stay again! We had a couple of small maintenance requests that were addressed promptly. Our room was always clean, fresh towels as needed, no disturbances from other guests. We only visited the restaurant once for breakfast during our stay, they accommodated our request for a quick meal due to our timing needs that day and we enjoyed that meal. The building is not new and "modern" if that is something important to anyone reading this, but it is comfortable and very well maintained. We enjoyed the vintage art and coziness of the space. We stayed for a full week and booked one of the king suites. Unfortunately due to the layout of the room it is in the same location on each floor - right next to the elevator and on the front corner of the building. The room does have updated windows so the sound was muffled, but we did still wake several times each night/early morning (until I remembered I brought ear plugs on the 4th night!) Just sharing in case a reader is considering the large suite and is sensitive to evening sounds, but it didn't affect our stay enough to decrease the rating. The staff offered to put us in a different room but since we planned a long visit we decided to stay in the larger room and we enjoyed having the additional space.

Great location, wonderful staff and quiet bog rooms. We had a wonderful stay here and we’ve made this our base as we explore the western coast. Staff are very kind, helpful. Beds are comfy and rooms are very generous in size. We’ve had a good sleep after 10-16 hours of travel as the rooms are quiet. Location is also fantastic to explore various neighbourhoods - buses all leave just off Market Street so it’s a very convenient spot if you don’t want to rent a car in SFO.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. We asked for 3 rooms on the same floor and they accommodated our request and gave us 3 rooms across and next to each other! Great location close to restaurants and Chinatown. I would stay there again.

Once, the hotel front door was locked in the evening, and the desk staff did not respond to knocking. The attendant out front had to get their attention. An annoyance. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay, excellently located, super friendly and helpful staff and the bed was comfy. No noise from the busy road the hotel is situated on which was a concern when arriving, but needn’t have been. Would definitely return!

The Orchard Hotel was a very easy and nice place to stay right near Union Square and Chinatown. Friendly front desk clerks, easy check in and out, our room was clean and comfy and more spacious than most hotels of the same class. There was nothing that wasn't good here! 5 minute walk to the Grant Street gate of Chinatown, 5 minutes to Union Square. The Powell Street cable car runs right next to the hotel, so that was charming. Lots of good restaurants in the immediate area. Parking at the Stockton Sutter city garage was 1 block away and felt as secure as lots go in the city. We will be back!

This hotel is a hidden jewel. It is comfortable, beautifully appointed and in a great location. Nothing.

A well-maintained boutique hotel with great character -- excellent and helpful staff, well-maintained and furnished and centrally located to Chinatown and Union Square. It is half way up steep Nob Hill, which contributes to its charm, but be aware that it is a steep but short walk both from Powell St. and Montgomery St. BART Stations (latter is more manageable). Lyft is readily available and reasonably priced though watch out for surge pricing before 9:30 am ($33 before but $7 after) to BART.

We asked for maintenance for fix our water temperature because our water kept running cold. We told them in the morning and by night when we returned to the hotel, they said it had been fixed. We go to shower and find out that the water is running brown. The staff tell us to run it for 30 minutes to clear up the water, but after we ran it for 50 minutes it still came out brown. We notified them of this issue, and they offered free breakfast - which did not solve our issue as we needed to shower and were planning on leaving on a far trip to Palo Alto early next morning. Finally after switching our rooms (which the water was brown again) and then us advocating for a room at their sister hotel, 2 hours later, the issue was finally resolved. The lack of solutions provided by the staff and making us wait so long for a conclusion was truly unacceptable.

Very comfortable room all around, nice chair (plastic, but not unpleasant plastic, so it actually seemed clean!), separate area for coffee (keurig), they don't use bottled water but have a water carafe you can fill from sites in the hotel (unfortunately, there are only three sites, so it's a bit inconvenient--but environmentally better). Bed was very comfortable, sheets, pillows high quality. Bathroom was updated and spacious. The room was much larger than I was expecting (King deluxe room). They have a nice "lobby" area that also serves breakfast. The room has a clock, plenty of outlets. I can't think of anything I didn't like. Location is not particularly nice--but in SF it could be much worse!

Hidden gem, we booked this hotel based on previous reviews, and it lived up to the hype. Rooms and bathroom as clean as a whistle, beds, superbly comfortable. Insanely friendly staff, and a great breakfast in the morning.

It is exactly as promised in the listing—I certainly can't deny that; for the price, it is a very reasonable hotel. Don't expect luxury; just come, stay with peace of mind, and be on your way.

Staff were extremely nice and helpful; the room was quite large and less expensive than many of the other larger hotel chains in the Union Square area; the room was tastefully designed with a table and a desk, two very comfortable beds, and a spacious and clean bathroom. I would definitely stay here again! We stayed on the top floor (10th floor) and it was very quiet.

Front desk staff were nice and engaging Hotel is "fine." It's not memorable. It has an underwhelming entrance and doesn't appear very inviting. There is no lobby or bar so its straight to the room or out 8nto the street. Plugs, unless to charge devices were dated and did not charge well

I found the Orchard to be an old fashioned hotel, but in the positive sense of the word. No frills but comfortable, clean and very well located. Good value for money too, which is rare in San Francisco.

The room is spacious, quiet, and very clean. The hotel’s location is convenient for getting to Chinatown, market street, and other sights. The hotel staff is professional and helpful. The hotel offers free drinking water. I will stay in the Orchard Hotel again if I visit San Francisco.

We love the comfortable bathrobes. Very clean - friendly housekeeping service. Front desk service - kind and competent. Lovely breakfast room with excellent food and service. Self-service, purified drinking water is available with easy access. Responded willingly to every request in a timely manner - including a request for an electric kettle for tea. Spacious rooms at moderate rates. Large bathrooms with bathtubs. Ethical management - present and attentive to help staff and guests.

This hotel was in the perfect location for both the Big Bus and Cable Car transportation options. It had a Walgreens only 1 block away which came in very handy, and the areas included China Town and many great restaurants. We would definitely stay there again. The staff was super helpful, and rooms clean and comfortable, and super quiet on the back side of the hotel.

Great location, near Chinatown, North Beach, Union Square and FiDi. The hotel is quite nice, and a good value. No parking on site, but two options close by. Nice restaurant on site. I stay in the city about 10-12 times a year, and I will return to this one again if I'm mostly just needing a place to sleep. If you have an event at the Fairmont, Ritz Carlton or John Hopkins, this place is down the hill, just a few blocks away. Hotel staff are gracious and professional. Room was clean and refreshed, especially compared to similarly priced hotels in the area. Outlets near the bed and near the large mirror outside the bathroom. Bathroom has a shower and bath, and was clean. Close to Tunnel Top Bar and Pagan Idol, and easy to walk to Union Square, theaters, Polk Street, Chinatown and North Beach. No on site parking.

There was loads of storage space in the room. We filled our bottles at the purified water stations. The restaurant was perfect for breakfast and everyone at the desk was terrific. There was also a local pizzeria across the street and a Walgreens a block away plus local market close by. The only thing that was inconvenient were plugs for tech not available at night stands, though there were electrical outlets to plug in devices. Be sure to take your plugs and wires! Rooms were exceptionally quiet and restful. For someone like me who didn't appreciate that the area was not at all car friendly, the parking situation was expensive and less than convenient. The nighttime environment was a bit sketchy, and I feel that perhaps a locked front entrance requiring your key card for entrance would have made me feel safer.

This was an excellent hotel. Upon checkin I was informed of a free upgrade to a suite, which turned out to be a very nice upgrade. The suite was larger than most apartments in this neighborhood. The room was clean, bedding was luxurious.

My room was so nice and the bedding was especially comfortable with duvets and sheets so clean and soft. The mattress was very comfortable as well. Sometimes hard to come by! Very nice experience overall. I will definitely return!

Location is nice because it's very close to Union square without being right in the busy throngs of tourists and other folks. Be OK with walking up a few steep blocks but it's not too bad. Surprisingly interesting choice of small bars in the neighborhood if you need to unwind.

Hotel was VERY clean, staff was amazing and location was perfect. My only issue was room was warm for me, but that is very subjective I know. Would stay again.

Hotel is well located, very good condition, quiet and hotel staff very attentive easy passenger loading zone in front of hotel. Overnight parking a block away only $22 until 9 AM. Must be aware of parking on the street because of tow away zones.

The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. Clean interior. Close to bars and restaurants.

The hotel was great and centrally located. The room was clean, spacious, beds were very comfortable, and hotel looked like it had been renovated. The only thing that I would have liked differently was if the beds were bigger. Everything else was excellent. Reception was helpful with restaurant recommendations

Great customer service

The rooms are very pleasant, the beds comfotable, the property is sparkling clean and it’s well located near Union Square. We loved having an empty glass pitcher to fill from filtered water dispensers and a very quiet small hotel environment and easy walking distance to non hill, ferry building, north beach and public transit.

Easy Check in with online pre-checking. Love that they send messages to guests to check in on them. Made it easy to ask queries related to the hotel facilities.

Orchard Hotel is just a block away from Union Square. The hotel did not offer coffee/tea or breakfast but is in a decent shape compared to my last stay in a hotel close to Union Square. Parking close by is also a plus. The rooms were pretty clean and the staff friendly. Stay was worth the money paid.

My daughter and I took the train up for one night (we were visiting friends in Sacramento). I had stayed at the same Hotel recently with my partner and it was enjoyable, but this time was a whole new level. We got a free upgrade and a gorgeous Corner Suite with the view, the staff was just as fantastic this time as last time, the gentleman who checked us out gave my daughter a box of gummy candies and it was so thoughtful. We loved the eco-friendliness, , the bath and shower were both great, and the bed was phenomenal. I will say we loved the service in the breakfast restaurant, but the menu was not the best for children, and we wound up ordering about a pound of chocolate chip pancakes that we could only eat a fraction of. Otherwise it was perfection. Highly rated, I will definitely return, and I will recommend this place to any friends visiting San Francisco. Oh plus the location right off of Union Square near the Powell BART station was great as well. Right on the trolley! Thanks to y'all for such a lovely stay.

Great room for what we needed. Our son ended joining us and we were able to also get a roll out bed. It was comfy for sure.

Very convenient location, so much to see and do in very walkable distances. Central to everything we wanted to see and do during our quick trip. Bed was incredibly comfortable. bathroom was great and had everything you could want. And the hotel is very eco friendly in highly practical ways (water stations in the lobby and throughout vs plastic water bottles as an example). Highly recommend!

I want to start off by saying the service at this hotel is absolutely delightful. You can tell the people working there really enjoy their jobs and they're very kind, responsive and friendly. The room was quite nice, the bathroom was spacious with a tub, I'll be at shallow, a pretty nice view and a super comfortable bed. The biggest issue we had while we were there was that the elevator went out the second day forcing everyone including housekeeping staff to walk up and down the stairs, we were the sixth floor and it got a little tiring after a while. The day we were leaving we also learned that the hotel was getting maintenance work done in certain facilities would be out. So the biggest issue was just that the hotel was old and seemed to need a lot of repairs. Otherwise if that hadn't been an issue we would have rated five stars! And their sister property Orchard Garden was also convenient and looked very pretty.

The Orchard Hotel was very intentionally furnished with all the amenities for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The rooms with beautifully designed, very clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It is in a nice part of town with easy walking distance to chinatown. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it for your next stay, whether it is for business or pleasure.

Second time to stay. They upgraded me to a lovely, spacious suite. When in SF you have to expect small rooms and bathrooms, but not here. The pictures tell the story. The bed is what brought me back. So soft and comfortable. Worried about the walk up the hill? Don’t be. Just take the cable car. Download the mini app, get a Clipper Card that works on the ferry too, and they’ll drop you off at Powell and Bush, right by the hotel. Just to manage expectations, on the side of the hotel toward the cable car line you will hear/feel the cable cars between morning and 10PM. A bit like an airport hotel and planes. Not bad.

We had a very nice stay at the Orchard Hotel. The property was in very good condition, the room was clean and spacious and the staff was friendly and accomodating. We thought it was a very good value and will definitely stay again.

This was one of the best hotels in which I have ever stayed in over 50 years. The room was fully equiped — big desk, ample drawers, alarm clock, large closet with wood hangers, large bathroom with glassdoor shower for two, large sink counter, robes, coffee maker, large well lit room, excellent breakfast restaurant, steps to cable car, a few minutes from union square, and more! And all for $150 a night! Amazing find. I’ll stay here always!

Excellent. Clean, decent room with proper mugs and glasses. A coffee machine in the room that can be used for simple hot water. Fridge, climate control, etc in good working order. Only gripe is that the windows don't open. At all. As for San Francisco itself, well, it's fascinating if you want to observe people spaced out on drugs in public. But there's nothing the hotel can do about that.

Very convenient to a variety of locations

I booked through Hotels.com/Expedia, which advertised this hotel as 4-star. This is a very clean and well-managed hotel with extremely kind staff, but it’s not a 4-star experience. If you’re not staying during the JPM healthcare conference, then it’s a good, budget, eco-friendly 3-star experience at a fair price; but it doesn’t have the kind of amenities a person traveling for business would expect (e.g., did not have an in-room snack bar, slippers, a clothing steamer or overnight laundry/dry cleaning services). Three stars because the staff, from maid service to concierge, is truly top-tier.
