Reviews
The hotel is in a prime location in downtown San Francisco, close to many attractions and amenities. However, the area is often described as unsafe and uncomfortable due to the presence of homeless people and drug users. The hotel itself is frequently described as old, outdated, and in need of renovation, with cleanliness being a common concern.

No thermostat so if you want it colder you leave the windows open, which if you’re not used to the city is just really loud. Rooms were clean and reasonably sized but parking is not included so plan to add at least $30 to your bill.
- 3/5
The staff were friendly and the parking was convenient.
- 3.5/5
The staff was very friendly. The hotel is obviously a pretty old building which adds a lot of charm for me personally. Our bathroom did have a chipped tile and some repair spots on the wall and tile but overall a great room for the price. Noise is kinda obvious as it is right on the street but it wasn’t super loud at night even with the window open for cool air. The bed is slightly on the firmer side than what I like but a decent comfort level to where I wasn’t turning all night. There’s a large walk in closet and a dresser for clothes if you’re staying awhile. Could be a pro or con depending on how others view it but the parking is $30 a night in a gated area. So your car is a little safer than parking in the street.
- 4/5
Room had everything I need, area may be unsafe (heard someone breaking things outside on my second night), but that's outside of the hotel's control. For the price, everything was decent.

The hotel is not updated at all still has original everything and it's old and musty. It smelled like poop, there was no air conditioning or hot water. When we decided we couldn't stay there and risk getting sick the hotel staff was mad about us leaving. Never go here it's a huge mistake.

Worse place I’ve stayed. The tv y stopped working and they didn’t know what to do the shower was dirty and had mold. Bed was loud. Never again do not waist your time or money

Nothing, the pics on the app are way far from what I experienced. They moved me twice since in the first room none of the outlets worked and on the second room it was nasty since there were mold in the shower, there was a big crack on the shower floor, the toilet cover was on the floor, there was a lot of dust on one of the corners of the room, the walls were dirty, I never come back to this place, I requested towels and they asked me to go to the lobby to pick them up. It is a disaster in that hotel

Nothing I didn’t like the location. There is a lot homeless peoples outside the hotel, and the whole area look terrible. I don’t think I can walk outside and fell safe. I didn’t check in . Elevator broke with me in it for 20 minutes front desk argued with me about it. Was stuck on fourth floor when doors finally opened I had to walk up to the 6th floor. Was supposed to stay two nights but I was afraid to use the elevator so I walked down 6 floors to the lobby the next morning and left. I’m trying to get a refund for the second night

Windows were falling out if the casing, I physically had to remove it from the track and put it back in. Also they were paper thin so you heard every conversation on the street. And since this hotel is in the Tenderloin the conversations were spicy. Beds are the cheap metal frames from Amazon with a mattress on top. Same with the curtains, cheap from Amazon. Nothing was commercial grade. Furniture that wasn't from Amazon looked 2nd hand, but like cheap FB Marketplace 2nd hand that needs some work. The photos online are NOT an accurate depiction of the rooms.
- 2/5
First off no on-site parking. Only street parking or the creepy dark parking lot around the corner filled with homeless. The place made me and my wife so uneasy we didnt even stay at this place. Electronic locks on the door. Also a red flag for the area.
- 5/5
Modest and exactly what I needed. Great amount of space for the price. If you’re used to hostels, this is luxury.
- 3/5
Very old feeling and vintage.. not super clean. Great and safe parking tho compared to the rest of the city.
- 4/5
Definitely an old place, but I found it cool & interesting. Very art deco. Everything was clean and worked as it should. The people at the front desk were very friendly & helpful. We were close to the 5 bus which helped us get most places we needed to go. Apparently the area was supposed to be unsafe but I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary (Yes, there were unhoused people, some who were obviously having difficulty with mental or substance issues, but not more than any other large city). We got way more than expected with the price we paid.

Terrible hotel, smelled musty, bed was horrible! Literally was just springs and hurt every time I tried to turn over. It was very cold and we asked for extra pillows and a blanket and they gave us some sort of thin bed cover that would slide right off. There was loud construction going on right outside our window and when we asked about moving rooms they said the only one they had available was worse than the room we had. So we had to stay in that smelly room with the worse bed I have ever slept in! Worst hotel stay ever!!

Location was alright. Was not too far from places. Theres only 1 elevator for fhe building and its super tight and slow; definitely outdated. TV didn't work. No A/C. The room smelled. The window had no screen. Bathroom smelled of mold. The carpet from the room felt and looked dirty. Parking was supposed to be secure due to the gate, it seems like they leave it open all night. Its pointless to ask the concierge and parking staff for anything since they're rude about it.

I was told parking came with the room rate only to find out that the parking was extra $30/d after a bad discussion with parking personnel - parking is a separate business. Elevator has not been inspected since 2012 per notice in the elevator. It is slow and at times shakey. No refrigerator nor microwave in the room. When taking a warm shower, it got hot after next room flushed. Signs tend to be confusing. It was inexpensive so I got what I paid for.

Parking was easy though not especially secure, but reasonable value. The little coffee shop attached to the hotel is very nice, though with limited hours. There was aSunday Farmers' market in the plaza nearby that was an unexpected plus. The immediate neighborhood does not have many other places to eat. The broken smoke alarm was fixed promptly but not the dripping faucet; Having staff at the desk 24 hours a day is essential in that neighborhood--on one side it is fine but about two blocks away things get sketchy. Very good location otherwise, near BART and a Market St trolley line that goes all the way to fisherman's wharf.Staff were friendly and accommodating to requests.Remarkably good value overall.

The hotel hasn't been renovated at all since it was built in the 60s and 70s; it's an old building with old furniture (maybe the mattress is newer). The room smelled musty and had mold, and the carpet was dirty. The housekeeping was fine, though. The key card stopped working every three days, and we had to have it reprogrammed at the front desk. There was no cleaning for 10 days. There were three of us guys, and we went to San Francisco to party and sightsee, so it actually suited us because it was cheap and the location was excellent. We were worried at first because we’d read that there are quite a few homeless people in the area, but we didn’t really have any problems with that. The elevator was also a death trap, but we’re still alive! :) The staff, by the way, were helpful and friendly. The value for money was totally fine for us, but I should point out that we’re three undemanding drunks! :))) the Hotel! :)

lost power one night which was a little annoying but not quite a big deal. However, since the next day (in person) and through the phone I have not been able to contact/talk to anyone who would discuss refunds. Staff not the friendliest or helpful- won’t acknowledge you, help with baggage, or help opening door if you have a lot of baggage, etc. No basic hotel amenities like a water dispenser, mini fridge, or microwave in room. Questionable cleanliness- bathtub had hair in it upon check in and another guest checking in complained that she arrived to a room where the bed was not made. For my family, the initial room that was given to us had a tv and lamp that was not working.

Hotels.com advertised a photo of the room I was told I would be renting. What I was given was something else and they did this to me 2 nights in a row. When I complained that I wanted my money back, hotels.com reimbursed me but the hotel kept my deposit for both nights so basically they paid themselves anyway using my money that I left as deposit. I left both rooms exactly how I found them. I am upset. Here are photos. First is advertisement and the others are what I was actually given.

I thought this was the worst hotel stay I’ve ever had. I got a double bed room instead of a single king which wasn’t the issue but this hotel room is appalling and hasn’t been updated since the 70s. It felt more like a cheap one room apartment. The bed was a nightmare. Thin like paper sheets, dirty comforters, freezing, seedy guests, dusty floors. I was absolutely terrified during my entire stay. I will avoid this hotel anytime I’m in San Francisco. An absolute nightmare. It’s more like a seedy motel.

Convenient location Lack of attention to supply of bottled water in the room which is a common practice in most countries including the developing countries. At the time of customer is tired and exhausted. I was dead beat and absolutely dehydrated. Then I had to go on a hunt for a simple amenity like a bottle of drinking water. Not pleasant. It was a struggle. Fortunately there was a store close by which was a life saver.

When we returned in the afternoon 4:00 pm I asked again about heat he said he was working on it so asked about Blankets again he is working on it??? So at six pm asking again about heat and blankets, now others are asking too because they are freezing his reply it will be fixed in a couple days, still no blankets so we booked a different Hotel to stay in and packed up as we are leaving at 8:30 pm he gave us a blanket I said no I want a refund he said he couldn’t do that the Owner who won’t be back till 10:00 am !! This place is and absolute dump don’t no how Hotels. Com would even list it !!! Outside crack heads sleeping on the streets!!

Main point: if you need quick and cheap access to the Tenderloin and some fun areas of SF, it is a reasonable price. No A/C, which is fine. Windows open with no screen and let some cool air in when needed. Don't expect anything super nice. It is a place to lay your head during a quick stay.
- 1/5
Do not stay here. It’s ghetto. Beds are terrible. Dirty. Old. Not comfortable. Super small.
- 1/5
In addition, the restroom window was broken, which raised serious safety and maintenance concerns. These conditions made it impossible to feel comfortable or secure during my stay. This experience fell far below basic hospitality standards. I strongly urge management to address these serious cleanliness and safety issues immediately to ensure future guests are not subjected to the same conditions.

- 4/5

- 3/5
Pros: convenient location, as it was quite central to SF for exploring. TV worked, had DirectTV. Staff was nice. Elevator worked. I felt safe as a solo traveler. Cons: The room was…stuffy/musty/dingy. I spent several nights here. Consistently, after being in my room for at least an hour, I would develop a headache, sore throat, and irritated sinuses (while initially I thought I was coming down with something, my symptoms would clear up after 30 minutes of being outside the hotel). Each morning I woke up feeling like I had just gone through the worst pollen season of my life. Perhaps I am more sensitive to the dust collected in this old hotel or whatever is going on in these rooms (mold maybe), but this made for an unpleasant experience while staying at this hotel. I have never before experienced such an allergic reaction while traveling, which I do a lot of, so something is afoot at the Embassy. Also the basement was actively flooding when I was checking out due to some heavy rain

What a gem in the heart of SF. Mind you, the neighborhood is a place to keep your head on a swivel but once you get in the doors, the staff has got your back. The room are eclectic and super clean. The bathrooms have the feeling of little apartment living right in the middle of it all. We used Waymo, the self-driving cars to get around, I highly recommend will get you in and out of the sketchy hood :) Will return anytime I’m in SF for sure👍

Misleading pictures and descriptions for this horrible hotel. Rooms with filthy walls, bathrooms, super dirty stained and sticky carpets and everything in it was super bad. When checking one of the beds a bug run from under the pillow. High odor of marihuana in hallway plus no A/C nor fans in rooms. Let me assume high scores are form owners, employees or friends. Should not be recommended by Expedia nor any other site.

Travel with our three kids. We check in and out in 30 minutes. It is a terrible and no safe hotel. No what pictures shows. Hotel is very old, dirty carpets, no a/c, smelly and dirty rooms. Positive remarks: easy on-site parking for reasonable price, cool decorative elements in lobby and vintage furniture. The front desk staff and cleaning staff were nice. Negative remarks: the elevator was super scary and has not been inspected or certified by the city in 10+ years, broken buttons, rickety sounds, we mostly took the stairs. The bed linens seemed very old, just a sheet and paper-thin comforter. The photos online make the place look fancy, and it probably was 40 years ago, but it is now quite worn and shabby.

Avoid if staying in sanfransico location wasn’t brilliant - parking attendants were incredibly rude and it was hard to park despite paying 30 dollars per day. Had to drive around multiple times as gate was shut, had to get my friend to go in to open the gate. One unsafe derelict elevator which sometimes took 20 minutes to get down. Bathroom was moldy and dirty and dark toilet seat fell off - no ac no heating. Would stay away at all costs.

We enjoyed our stay many amenities close by but would have been nice to have an area map workers were helpful and friendly check out is at 11am but theres a sitting area on 2nd floor where we sat and waited till 7pm for our scheduled train
- 4/5
I like the rooms they're spacious the only thing that would be better is if there was a breakfast of some sort
- 1/5
We checked out faster than we checked in!!
- 3/5
neighbour hood had homeless near by you need to watch where you walk
- 4/5
The carpets were dirty, black mold in the showers, the mattresses were cheap and uncomfortable, the elevator is slow, small and usually occupied. Took the stairs to the 5th floor and down most of the time. Aside from that, its good place to stay for a night or two on a budget. Parking is secured in a gated lot next to the hotel for $32-40 per night. Walking distance to good eateries. Recommend food within walking distance: Cafe Buenos Aires on Polk st. for their variety of fresh empanadas and desserts, fruit fruit smoothies and hot mushroom drinks and matcha. Then to have the stews/soups and other chinese foods at Hai Ki Mi Gia on Ellis. Both eateries keep a very clean place and presentation of food, on top of the food tasting delicious.

The hotel itself is a bit old, but good condition I’d say so. some reviews say it’s in the “hood” or not good area, yes there are some homeless but none of them bothered me or asked for anything. I recommend the pronto pizza, there is also a taco bell/KFC near by and a snack shop incase you get hungry. The room I stayed in was clean, there was really only a stain on the curtain but it didn’t bother me, it is loud at nice but that’s city life in san francisco, the king bed was comfortable and the shower was nice expect the water pressure was kind of rough haha and the staff is okay, we asked for more toilet paper in the morning but we didn’t get any, we had to ask the front desk when we came back at night so i think that’s one thing they need to work on is the staff and room service. overall, nice stay for 3 nights
- 3/5
The staff was really nice, but the room wasn’t the best. The closet had a really weird smell that got on our clothes and some of the towels were not clean. The location was good, next to city hall but also to some sketchy neighborhoods.
- 1/5
This hotel needs a major overhaul. Creaky floors, wafer thin walls, no AC, smelly, outdated and more than anything, unsafe. Situated in such a sketchy area with people passed out near the doorstep, needles in the sidewalk and at one point a guy on a bicycle wielding a pocket knife! My family of 4 left at 3am because of the noise, heat and smell. Just don’t stay here. Trust me. This place is awful

We had repeated technical issues with key cards, but otherwise no problems. Good experience.

location is convenient but not in a safe area. walls are really thin, can hear everything from the next door room. called front desk about noise complaint, they did nothing. amenities are really old, carpet smells. NO AC. radiator heater seems to go off automatically but cannot be adjusted in room. keys to enter room would frequently not work and had to go to the front desk multiple times to fix . overall would not stay again, doable for maybe one night only though.
- 5/5
But the hotel was safe and staff were very friendly
- 5/5
Yes, Liquor stores and food.
- 1/5
Lets start with the fact that the hotel is in the hood and its not safe. Drunk and high people amble around the hallways and the elevator is not key-accessed, so they can come right up to your floor. The building is also not locked during the day so anyone can waltz right in. My first impression upon arrival and check-in was being accosted by a drunken homeless man who could barely stand, asking for cigarettes and/or money. When you get in your room, you'll likely be missing necessary items and things will be broken. In my case, I had no shower curtain and my TV remote didnt work. The hotel did NOTHING to fix this despite several requests, so I had to shower without a curtain and spill water everywhere. My TV was also stuck on the QVC channel for the entire trip, so it was useless. In terms of amenities, this hotel is ancient. There is no air conditioning. Theres an old-school iron space heater you have no control over. Be ready to open your window (and jump out) to cool down and hear the sounds of the homeless screaming and ambulences roaring down the street all night long. The linens are rough, stained, and old. The bed is hard as a rock. Everything creaks under your feet. The walls are paper-thin so expect to hear every conversation, scream, vomit sound, and sex sound. TLDR; This place should be condemned.
- 1/5
Location is sketchy, old hotel vibe. Bed was surprisingly comfortable. No temp control in room
- 4/5
Room was clean, good space, the only downside was room was a bit hot. It was near a good amount of food places and at walking distance.
- 4/5
Clean room, friendly helpful staff, not a great part of San Francisco.
- 1/5
It's nothing like you see on line when you are booking on this hotel our room had blood stains on the bed covers the carpet looked like someone was murdered in there smelled like urine throughout the hotel this location is in the worst place of the city junkies throughout the streets trash as well so you better be careful booking this hotel
- 3/5
Location and affordability are the best reason to stay at Embassy - you are in the middle of it all and can walk or ride within minutes of most of the best Downtown has. The location is gritty by some standards but the community around the Embassy pretty much stays to themselves - you are next to some great schools and great local restaurants - the Embassy is very clean, it is an older building and its age shows, but the staff keep things in great order. We had a double room which was very spacious there is no a/c but the window fully opened and let cooler air into the room. The floors and walls are thin - depending who your neighbors are you will hear conversations and know when they are walking around their rooms. The restroom is a great size good amenities and the shower/tub worked well. The room had an iron and board and hair dryer television is DirecTV and familiar to operate. Overall - if you're in town and need a safe comfortable affordable place to be your starting point in the city and your resting place in the evening your won't go wrong with the Embassy.
- 3/5
It’s located in the Tenderloin District, one of the rougher areas of San Francisco. The location was not clearly advertised when booking, and if you’re a solo female traveler, I would strongly recommend avoiding this area. They even lock the front entrance door, so at times you have to ring a bell to be let in. That alone should tell you how rough the neighborhood can be. To be fair, the towels and linens were clean and the staff was friendly, but the hotel itself is very dated and worn. The building has an old charm, but the moment we walked into our room it smelled like cigarette smoke, even though it’s supposed to be smoke-free. We had to notify management. There is no air conditioning, only an old furnace system that may or may not work. Luckily San Francisco weather is cool, so opening the window helped, but the street noise is loud, which may bother some guests. Also, the photos on Expedia are heavily filtered and misleading compared to the actual condition of the hotel.Amenities are minimal, only a small fridge, no real extras, and the TV isn’t Bluetooth enabled. If you just need a cheap place to sleep, it may be fine. But if you prefer cleaner, more modern accommodations or are traveling alone, I’d recommend staying elsewhere.
- 1/5
This hotel was absolutely filthy and not up to code in my view. The elevator did not work, there were pipes showing everywhere. The room was unclean. Sheets, bedding, and carpet were so old they were tattered.
- 4/5
Hotel is very fancy and clean but no air conditioning which sucked. Radiator was making noise all night which made it hard to sleep. Staff is very friendly.

Need more power outlets to connect devices. And a door mirror.

No water, no coffee, no coffee maker in the room or in the hotel! Very old bathroom! Holes in bed sheets, holes in the bathroom curtain, rust on the bathtub hole, ugly aisles, very vey old and damaged plugs . I don’t recommend it at all!
- 3/5
The place was pleasant and clean, but the room was incredibly hot. Bring a fan! Also no fridge and no coffee provided in the room. Overall, for the area it is in, it felt safe and clean. Parking was nice to have, although pricey.
- 1/5
The hotel is so old. No air conditioning. The room smells. Bathroom tiles re-painted, so ugly. Just want to check out after we checked-in.
- 1/5
Checking in and it smelled bad of cigarette smoke, the outside is not safe. I had to walk by people doing meth and a bunch of homeless just to get into the hotel We ended up not staying and cancelling our reservations
- 1/5
First, the location felt extremely unsafe. The surrounding area did not feel secure at all, especially arriving with luggage. The building itself was in poor condition. They charged us the $100 dollar deposit . The elevator felt unsafe and unstable, and the flooring was uneven. In the hallway carpet, there was a large dark stain (approximately 30 cm in diameter) with a strong odor. We could not tell if it was blood or something else, but it was deeply concerning. When we entered the room, the situation got worse. The beds and sheets were visibly stained. Again, we could not determine what the stains were, but they were large and clearly noticeable. The room had a strong unpleasant odor and there was no air conditioning. The key cards did not work properly After 30 minutes, we decided we could not stay there. We felt uncomfortable and unsafe. We had to urgently book another hotel at the last minute ($559 per night). To make matters worse, when we were leaving, the staff member locked the building behind us, not allowing us to go back inside to wait for our Uber despite the unsafe surroundings. This property does not match its online description, and we would strongly caution future travelers. We expect Expedia to review the accuracy of this listing and return our money as soon as possible.

The room was disgusting. No full sized towels. Furnace was from 1940 and was extremely loud every 20-30 minutes. Smelled like sewer. Bed was not comfortable. Whole building was weird vibes.

Minimal staff support, unkept rooms and old broken amenities. Cheap price and quality overall.
- 1/5
The entire hotel smelled stale and dusty. The room they first put us in had a ladder and tools strewn about. Told the front desk who had no idea this room was not available. They changed our rooms to the next room so now we could hear the construction from the first room. The dust made it impossible to stay. We ended up filing a claim and finding another hotel.
- 4/5
The hotel was fine, clean sheets, and clean rooms but its glory days were certainly behind it - everything was a touch dingy. The radiator gurgled all night very loudly, for example. The price was great and staff was very pleasant.
- 5/5
The staff were all courteous and helpful. I loved hearing that until last year a single family had owned the hotel since 1929.

Looks absolutely nothing like the pictures. This place is filthy, it looks like there’s no housekeeping. There was mold all over the walls. I left, could not stay there after seeing how disgusting this place was. Do not stay here, it’s a health hazard!! Not sure how it’s still open
- 5/5
This was a pretty cool hotel, very convenient to where I had to go for my trip and was not a high traffic area so it was enjoyable very close to the scooters that I rented over the weekend. A good distance from the pier and Golden Gate Bridge, but very good place to stay if staying in the city.
- 1/5
The room looked neglected the furniture was from the 1950's and looked falling apart. The hallways had a musty smell its was terrible.
- 3/5
Rooms where ok considering it's a old hotel, only complaint there was no mini fridge to store our drinks and snacks, hotel could definitely use an upgrade but it did its job .... thanks

Lobby was nice. Front desk staff was nice. Got to our room and it was disgusting. Very dirty. No A/C. Top blankets on bed looked like they had never been washed. Elevator was sketchy too. Did not feel safe in the room. Went back down to lobby and canceled our week stay. We got all but one night refunded but we checked out and didn't stay there.
- 4/5
Nice staff.
- 4/5
Room was good! And Bill was a great host
- 5/5
Had a great stay here. The room was clean, comfortable, and well taken care of, and the staff was friendly and helpful throughout our visit. The location was convenient and made getting around really easy. Everything felt smooth and stress-free, which is exactly what you want when staying at a hotel. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
- 1/5
Hotel keys weren’t working had to get 4 different pairs from front desk. Shower head worked horribly and only had a small curtain to block water. Requested for a fridge and they gave us one that was dirty af legit had residue all over the bottom. Walls are also super thin so you can hear everything…and I mean everything. Only good experience I had was with house keeping that were always happy to help us open our room because our room keys never worked.
- 2/5
No clean, the bathroom was dirty smelly and liquid water from the roof outside the bathroom’s door, and enter door too they are next to each other, the enter door was so hard to open.
- 2/5
No house keeping, when did ask, we just got bedding left in the room,, our room did not see any kind of house keeping of any description,, the area was inondate with down and outs the smell of drugs was overwhelming at times, personally we will never return to this hotel or the area in general.
- 1/5
I left after being there for 1 hour. There was bloodstains all over the carpet and screaming and yelling. The sketchiest and dirtiest hotel I have ever been to. did not offer any refunds for the biohazards in my room, and to top it off my deadbolt on my door didn’t work. As a women staying alone this is unacceptable and unsafe.
- 1/5
The hotel was not what we expected, terrible beds, it smelled, very noisy… we just stayed one night and we left
- 1/5
United was horrible. Wheelchair assistance was terrible.
- 2/5
The room was not ideal. And was too close to the road. So too noisy. And couldn’t sleep.
- 5/5
the staff was very friendly and helpful, the facility was clean and safe, the hotel was in a fantastic location to get to all the tourist sites. The front desk people were always available and willing to answer questions or help in any way they could.
- 1/5
Spare yourselves the trouble and listen to the reviews. I made a mistake and trusted their endless replies about improving the place and taking customer feedback seriously. It is not worth your health, sanity, or money.
- 3/5
Hotel hasn’t been remodeled, no daily housekeeping, one elevator
- 4/5
Good value for one or two evenings. The hotel itself could be a little old if you're aiming for fancy.
- 5/5
It was fast
- 2/5
Amenities and parking. I had to get my room keys renewed 4 times because they were not working. Parking is extra and parking staff was rude.
- 5/5
The room is clean. The Front desk and manager services are considerate. Parking is convenient and the service is excellent.
- 4/5
The desk staff were helpful when my key card stopped working. Overall, the room was perfect for what I needed for the weekend.
- 4/5
My only big issue is that there is no A/C or fan in the room (fan would be fine for SF) - and the old heater/furnace is REALLY noisy (you can't really turn it off) - it woke me up a lot at night. Other than that everything was fine and I will most likely stay here again.
- 1/5
In addition, there are other inconveniences, including a toilet that does not flush entirely, a hotel phone at his nonfunctional, and only one outlet in the entire room. Overall you can tell there is no attentive care given to the room. I just hope they care enough to clean it well but doubt that is the case based on my experience.

Great helpful staff. Rooms clean.
- 3/5
The room was alright. It needed air freshner. No one came to refresh my room in 5 daysp
- 3/5
The room was fine for the price and the age of the building. It's not in the nicest location, but we just avoided walking through Tenderloin and we were able to avoid a lot of the homeless in the area. The towels are very thin, the toiletries are cheap and the bathroom was a bit mouldy. Staff weren't overly friendly - I went to request an extra towel (we booked for 3 people but were only given 2 towels), an extra blanket and to see if they had a bath plug available. The receptionist was rude and made me feel like I was requesting too much. However, we were provided with the extra towel and blanket. I will pay extra money to stay somewhere else next time I visit the city.
- 2/5
Shower was dilapidated and only a trickle of hot water.
- 5/5
Clean room
- 1/5
First room was mold and heater didn't work. Second room also had mold. Front desk looked at me like i was crazy and tried to argue with me. We left as soon as we could find another available hotel away from the bad area where we couldn't see drug addicts out our window.
- 2/5
I didn't really trust that the room was that clean, as it was hard to tell with the marks left from previous visitors. Plus the room smelt, it was supposedly non-smoking, but there was a definite odor - I had the window open the whole 5 five days and it seemed to get better, but I just think it was old and the smell was in the carpets/curtains etc. I probably wouldn't stay again.
- 5/5
Hotel is dated older building as you would expect - great value, very clean, friendly staff - also a great location yet as u will find San Fran is still dealing with a serious homeless issue. It’s unnerving but manageable walking even at night. The homeless largely leave you alone, yet it is sad to see. And good to be aware.
- 4/5
The location was unbeatable for the price, but there are no amenities, not even coffee, and the heat was broken so the room was uncomfortablely hot.
- 1/5
This was the worst hotel. There's mold all over the ceilings, bathroom tiles are falling off, and the blankets definitely haven't been washed. We could not stay at the hotel and left early.
- 2/5
Room is more outdated- smell is musty and we had to open the windows to air out the room, bathroom is dirty, shower didn’t have cold water only hot water. TV and TV remote was not working right, only powered on and off. Room keys kept repeatedly not working and kept asking staff at the front desk to reactivate it to unlock the door to the room. Staff was nice and friendly however and helped promptly.
- 4/5
There seems to be an issue with the plumbing. When I was using the tub, I turned on the hot water first, then when I turn on the cold, the water started coming out brown. Just note to check plumbing at some point. Might have been my room, but best to look into it.
- 3/5
Location was convenient for our stay and rate seemed fair for the old condition of the hotel. The walls were very thin, there was no active ventilation in the restroom so it got a bit stuffy, and the shower water pressure was very high.
- 1/5
If you ever find this hotel, RUN!!!! This is the worst hotel Ive seen in my entire travel life. Be mindful with the positive reviews you read online, they are unreal. Please do yourself a favor not to stay in this hotel
- 4/5
Lots of cool spots near by. We had a fun trip!
- 1/5
HORRIBLE!!!!
- 4/5
The Staff was courteous and the room was very clean. I enjoyed just about everything there, and want to send my best wishes to everyone working at Embassy Hotel
- 5/5
The evening staff is really wonderful. His name is Bill and he’s just a really genuine nice guy. The day staff seems nice too. I just didn’t interact with them quite as much – I stayed there when I didn’t have power for four days. I would say the only downside is if you have a car it’s probably not a great place to park your car at night but if you don’t have a car, it’s pretty perfect in terms of location and it’s really cute; the rooms look like they spent a lot on maintaining the character of the building rather than just demolishing it all and starting from scratch. The bathrooms are so cool— they’re not anything fancy in terms of like special lighting or showerhead or anything, but what’s cool is that they kept the original tiling and it is beyond charming. One thing to take note of though is that they do not have microwaves or refrigerators, but I was able to stay there for $75 a night and that is a SF bargain if I’ve ever heard one!
- 1/5
The room smelled horrible of cigarettes, no bathroom service or cleaning of room. The pictures did not correspond to what it really looked like. The restroom is also hella nasty. Do not come here.
- 2/5
Pillows are really old and need extra pillows to sleep
- 3/5
Hotel is falling apart, and not an electronic device friendly. But what you would expect for a really old hotel
- 4/5
It's old but I love it here. Nice big rooms, the windows actually open and it feels good to be there. The neighborhood is sketchy but it's where all the hotels in San Francisco are...so I'd rather pay less and be able to park my car for the time I'm there.
- 5/5
It was a clean and cute hotel with friendly and very helpful Staff. My room was warm (the radiator heater worked really well). Parking was safe with gate and have the attendant. Surrounds area (1 block away) a lot of homeless, but the hotel itself is clean.
- 5/5
The room was spacios and the bed was comfortable. The TV however was not working properly. The bathroom shower was not thoroughly cleaned but we had a good stay. The staff up front greeted us right away and check-in was quick.
- 1/5
No good
- 2/5
Bathroom and specifically shower very outdated and absolutely disgusting. Unclear where to park at especially at night. People arguing in lobby followed by police there shortly after to settle dispute. Very run down!
- 5/5
Cool spot for a quick trip id just say they need a full body mirrors in the rooms
- 2/5
This place is a complete disaster. It’s outdated and doesn’t offer room service. Parking is $30 per night, which is reasonable and secure. However, the rooms are smelly and lack air conditioning or heating. The bathrooms are downright disgusting. Despite these issues, the location is great, so if you’re only looking for a place to sleep, it might be worth it.
- 1/5
the room was full of stains aswell as the temp in the shower would constantly change to scorching hot and the room smelled terrible, would not recommend unless you really need to budget
- 5/5
We stayed at the Embassy Hotel for approximately a month and had a genuinely positive experience. The staff were exceptionally kind, attentive, and professional, which made a long stay feel easy and comfortable. Customer service was consistently excellent, and we always felt welcomed and supported. We would happily recommend this hotel to others.
- 5/5
Yes was good room just for the weekend
- 5/5
Love it

Horrible experience I went to San Francisco to enjoy the holiday weekend the hotel ended up not having power because half of SF had a power outage so I left and went to a hotel with power I maybe stayed in that hotel for about an hour before I decided to go somewhere else, I had to contact Expedia for a refund they said they cannot issue a refund and only give me a $15 credit towards my next hotel, not only that but the entire place was incredibly filthy and dusty worst hotel I’ve ever stepped foot in, the only nice thing was the worker he was incredibly nice and helpful other than that I will never stay here again
- 5/5
Great hotel, great location

- 5/5
The lights went out but they were really friendly. Cheap and it’s at a good place to stay at especially in San Francisco. Lots of places to go at a walking distance.
- 1/5
Staff was terrible. There is no ac or cooling system. No fresh linen. Had to wait 30 minutes to check in because there was no staff at the front. The shower was tiny and didn’t look clean. The bathroom floor tile was dirty. Parking is $30 a night.
- 2/5
I understand that this is an old hotel so patches on walls old bathroom tubs are expected but they should at least clean the carpet.as that is the first thing you see when you enter the room. The room only have an old heater but no AC so the room feels muggy. We have to open the window to get fresh air but you can't leave it open at night because you can hear the homeless people outside shouting. I can't imagine staying her during summer. I gave it 2 stars because the front counter person is nice and the parking is gated so it feels safe. Also, it is the cheapest I found in the area. But if you want a comfortable place to sleep, I would find a different hotel.Maybe drive 7 to 10 miles out and get a nicer hotel with free parking for about the same price as this one.
- 1/5
Rooms was smelly dirty carpet and furniture and I didn’t even stay. I left .
- 3/5
The Embassy is an older hotel, but my room was clean and the staff were very friendly. Unfortunately, it was unseasonably cold in SF during my stay and the heating did not work in my room. The staff sent a technician and did offer to change my room the second evening. It was well worth the price though.
- 4/5
It's an old hotel, but it's clean and comfortable. That's good enough for my family of 6. We did a weekend getaway to the north side in Cali during December 2025. Although, the weather was cold the rooms were warm and comfy. The convenient parking was $30 per night. Do note that when you walk out of the hotel and you head to the left you will see the beautiful Civic Center Plaza and other wonderful things around there. It's at a walking distance. However, if you walk to the right to grab something to eat you might encounter homeless people. They don't harm anybody, but just needed to let you know. Overall, it's a fair place to stay.
- 5/5
What a gem to stay will stay on next trip
- 5/5
Charming, old school hotel with a friendly staff. Clean and comfortable.
- 2/5
This is not even one start hotel. Legally this hotel shouldn't be allowed to Operate in San Francisco. And hotel.com should remove from the listing. So far it has been over 10 days and i am still waiting for the security deposit paid during the checking
- 2/5
Not a very safe area - secure car park was helpful - staff did not make eye contact - felt seedy - decor tired right through - squeeky floor above us, person walked around a lot keeping us awake - needs a big renovation - photos must have been taken 20 years ago

I checked in for my two night stay but didn’t stay even 15 minutes. It was sketchy from the jump; stunk and felt dated and dirty. That was just the lobby. After I rode the scary elevator to my floor, got out and walked down a dark hallway where I heard screaming/chaos from not one but two rooms I entered my room, that somehow smelled WORSE than the lobby - ripped dirty carpet, no covers on the outlets, filthy chair, bed with just a sheet on it, a mirror so filthy I could barely see my reflection. It was super late, I was exhausted and tired and stood and contemplated whether or not I could just suck it up for the night, when a final yell from the room next door answered for me “ABSOLUTELY F$&KING NOT.” I had booked two nights and although I’m waiting to hear back whether or not hotels.com will refund me at least for 1; I honestly don’t care either way. There was no way I’d stay there even at a loss

The young man at the front desk refused to provide room service because I didn’t inform them the day before which no one told me at the check in time.
- 2/5
Staff was good, room was not. The walls are paper thin.
- 4/5
Staff was excellent
- 4/5
Yes, it's on the edge of the Tenderloin, and some people might feel unsafe at night. Yes, the carpet and fixtures are very dated. On the other hand, the room was large, the bed was comfortable, the elevator was in working order, the staff were friendly, and I had no complaints. Cheap and worth it.
- 2/5
The hotel lobby was nice, and the worker was nice when we arrived. He was very helpful in assisting us with parking. However, the hotel itself is very outdated and gross. We had trouble working the TV because the remote wouldn't change the channels. The shower was very gross, and there was a large pile of hair on the shower wall left by a previous guest. Then, the bathroom door could not keep others out. You could lock the door, but it was not attached very well, so anyone could push it open. The closet door could not be shut. The walls are very thin, and we arrived late, so we felt we had to tiptoe into our own room.
- 5/5
The facilities were clean and well-maintained, and our room was comfortable and quiet. For the value and the level of service we received, this hotel exceeded our expectations. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting San Francisco!!
- 2/5
The building has beautiful antique furniture. But the room was freezing and unmercifully humid. Water leaking
- 2/5
Parking was a $30 surcharge, and finding it was difficult given the number of one way only streets in the area. Shower had no water pressure and almost zero heat. Had a mount on shower wall for body gel & shampoo but neither were present. Had an empty toilet paper hangar too. No free breakfast. Walls thin.
- 3/5
The room was fine, but a little shabby and the employee at the front desk could use more training on how the parking works. I got just non helpful responses and had to figure it out
- 5/5
Excellent and clean

They keep your deposits for no reason I have tried to call them multiple times to get this resolved and they have not done anything. They hung up on me around three times already.

the shower is clogged, no slippers, very noisy at night.
- 1/5
If I could leave zero stars I would. I’ve never had to take 4 times my normal allergy meds until now. The room smelled terrible (mold, dust, cigarettes) no heat, mattress you could feel every spring in the bed. Plug ins missing face plates. We were so tired when we landed we suffered through 1 night and checked out early to stay somewhere that I don’t have to be medicated to breathe. Definitely top 2 of worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in. 2 days later I’m still medicated heavily for my mold allergies and need a breathing treatment. Photos on Expedia and Google are very misleading.
- 2/5
I would like advise anyone thinking of staying here - don’t. Pay a little more for a better hotel. The pictures are a scam. This hotel is not in a safe area. Parking is extremely expensive. The rooms are so aged and neglected.
- 2/5
Nothing like what the internet shows them to be
- 1/5
Horrible hotel
- 2/5
Everything above the lobby is so old and pooly maintained. The room was smelly, the radiator kept getting off in the middle of all 3 nights we were staying there and it was cold! There are now iron or hairdryer in the room.
- 2/5
I didn't feel very safe in the neighborhood and the hotel wasn't very clean. It had a spooky vibe. The curtain was broken, the room was very smelly, the microwave was crusty, forget about extra blankets in this place. I thought they coud do better, it wasn't that cheap!
- 4/5
Short trip for a wedding
- 4/5
The room was very clean and spacious! Staff was awesome! It was just too noisy for my liking. The cars outside would echo off the building throughout the night.
- 4/5
Room was clean, staff where friendly. Décor is dated but otherwise all ok.
- 3/5
. There was a broom left in the room. No AC in rooms. When I called they said they could provide a fan when i got there. I asked they said they would check dtorage they informed me they had none. Room was hot so we had to leave windows open. By us doing this we did not get much slerp because we could now hear all the noise outside. Towels were big but worn put 1 of them tore on us. Hotel was old which i LOVED i just thought of the history in it.
- 2/5
The room didn’t have a remote control for the tv and the shower was clogged
- 2/5
I'll start with the fact that the staff were amazing. Everyone I dealt with here was kind and helpful. And the place was... clean. And had some very nice old wood furniture. But... it's old. It's crumbling. Lots of cracked surfaces, lots of worn and stained upholstery. The bed sheets may well have been made of sandpaper, and you can hear EVERY. STEP. TAKEN. on the floor above. We had booked a wheelchair accessible room, and while, yes, there is an elevator that got us to the floor, and we could navigate the chair to the room... that was the end of it. Once in the room, you couldn't get the chair to the bed. Thankfully my spouse can walk that far, but not all people can. The window didn't lock. (4th floor, but still.) The door to the fire escape on the 4th floor was not capable of closing, let alone locking. The door didn't fit in the frame. The radiator in our room was... uncontrollable. We turned it off (it was unseasonably warm in SF for Nov) but it turned itself back on, even though the dial was closed. The room became sweltering. Eventually the hotel management just turned the radiator system off to deal with it. At one point we considered switching rooms, but the room they showed us on the first floor also had a window that wouldn't lock. Not doing that on the first floor. No way. The neighborhood is fine. I mean, if you're a swaddled suburban who can't handle walking past an unhoused person, you might not like it. But it'

The hotel seems to be a swing between owners. I ended up 2 rooms as the first one was not secure between adjoining units. Both seemed to have rough patching and be partially clean. Electrical outlets were not covered, lights had exposed wires, holes in walls either recently patch are still waiting, stains on floors and cloth in the rooms, different sized tvs, and limited air flow.
- 4/5
Staff good, room clean, good location
- 5/5
Clean room, pleasant staff, and a great price. Can't ask for much more
- 5/5
Great room to stay for 2 nights
- 3/5
Very transactional, no personal interaction from staff
- 5/5
The staff were great, and I love the old furniture and style. It was a very comfy day. Good shower.
- 1/5
The staff is really kind but this hotel is super sketchy, old, and run down. The power outlets looked burnt. The lamp had no place to plug into and the key card needed to be reset every 4 hours and sometimes sooner. Super false advertising compared to the pictures!

We were appreciative to have a place on a busy weekend. Wanted to extend stay, but next night was booked. Couldn't get card key to work at first then staff was not at desk. Staff changed so not much consistency. Liked the bed.

Clean friendly staff affordable no frills hotel great location in a vintage building

I don't know how people gave high rating to this hotel. Carpet was so dirty, room has musty smell. Bed not comfy. An old hotel, never been updated. If it was not late at night when we checked in, we could have left right away Not worth the money. If there's a zero star, this one gets it. We left the following day and just let go of our remaining 2 paid nights. Sorroundings doesn't feel safe. Homeless outside. Somebody knocked on our car while my, friend was checking in.Lobby looks okay but that's it.
- 1/5
No t.v working and did not change us to a different room. Front desk promised to refund someone money back. i paid 400$ for two night which was ridiculous considering how basic the rooms are. They lied about refunding some money back and manager wanted to act like he didn't know what I was talk about even tho the front desk staff told me he already spoke and confirmed with the manager about it. Expedia was no help either with digging deeper into it. Super frustrating situation.
- 4/5
The staff there was really kind and helpful. Our rooms were great to rest in. The bathrooms worked well, but walking in there can be a little unsafe, since the little bump underneath the door can cause you to trip if not careful. Another issue I ran into was trying open the bathroom door, since sometimes it would get jammed.
- 1/5
This hotel has ruined our family vacation. For a 3 star hotel, the only amenity that we got in our room was just a small tv. There is no internet, no hair dryer, no iron, no gym, no AC and no temperature unit in our room. I was mislead by all the wonderful reviews here on Expedia. The hallway was so smelly, and our room floor was so dirty. To make matters worse, our hotel room was so dusty that my wife woke me up every night. And, the hot shower was a non-existence. Noise level is super high. The heater made loud noises. We could hear footsteps from above us and from guests next to our room. In addition, the hotel bed was so awful and uncomfortable. For the cherry on the top, the location of this hotel is also not good. It's definitely not safe to walk around, especially at night. And, the hotel manager was never on site to address your issues. I was advised to make my refund request in writing to the management after I checked out on our second day because I couldn't take it anymore. And, the management has never responded to our request.
- 4/5
It a was a great hotel, however with it being an old building, there was no A/C or full room ventilation, only the open windows to get air in the room.
- 1/5
The accommodation was very old. They didn't clean the room, nor did they change the bed linens or towels once. They also charged me $70 in error. When I contacted the hotel, they informed me that it was incorrect and that they would refund the amount. They don't respond to messages through the hoteis.com app.

A good option for cheap travel, but room gets very hot with no air conditioning and there were marks on the sheets.
- 5/5
Good customer service, clean, safe
- 1/5
This hotel is run down, dirty, and doesn't have AC. My room smelled like dust and mold and when I realized it didn't have an AC unit I opened a window. Unfortunately it is very noisy outside and there are really bright lights that make it impossible to sleep. I didn't get any sleep the first night. The room was so hot and it was October. The shower was dirty with gnats and the handles aren't fixed into the wall correctly so getting hot water is difficult and turning the water off took so much time. Pillows and bed smelled musty. Also, make note that this is in the tenderloin so walking at night solo might not feel safe.

- 5/5
Loved the lobby and the datedness. Chose this hotel for a slice of 1930s and it delivered. All the basic amenities were avaliable. Nothing fancy but clean and comfortable.
- 1/5
Bed smelled like urine. Toilet wont flush and no a/c. Have to open the windows to sleep and the sound outside make me awake all night.
- 3/5
The hotel has aged and not well maintained over the years. The window to our bathroom was broken with a section broken out. Unfortunately, you cannot regulate the temperature in the room. We loved the art deco appearance in the online photos and in reality it was not thoughtfully maintained. Staff were amazing, helpful, and kind. Another guest, above us, stomped on their floor and knocked on the walls until the early hours. We felt safe, but sad about the state of the property.
- 3/5
Cons: Beds were not comfortable, room cards inconsistently worked, no AC, located in a rougher part of the area, not a great area for a family, attached cafe had incorrect hours, doors did not easily shut, inconsistent outlets in the room Bottom line: If you do not have children with you and are able to ride share directly from the door, it would have been a much more worth our while experience.
- 5/5
So far the hotel is old property but in good shape.
- 3/5
Think an antique as fun.

The hotel is old and cool and creepy. It was clean and quiet and fine stay especially for price. Sadly the area around it has been taken over by many homeless..

If you want a quaint retro feel hotel this place is for you. If you can look past its imperfections you will find a comfortable stay. We may have been a bit niave but the area is terrible, full of people living on the streets and using drugs, one even weilding a knife on another. Once inside you do feel safe, although the room we had was quite noisy especially with some people screaming and rubbish trucks doing a 4 am pick up. Overall, we got what we paid for and the staff were super accommodating
- 5/5
Yes, KFC, Taco Bell 2 min walk, convenience store 1 min, city hall 7 min walk. Dated hallways, but front foyer gorgeous, and room itself nice, roomy and clean. Loved it... "Old times" feeling

Rooms very old, smells, carpet dirty, no one comes to fix your bed or change your towels. Once I asked for towels I got them. Staff friendly. I won’t stay there next time.
- 1/5
sketchy looking rug stains, a heater with a broken nob that doesn't turn off, the heater also made the loudest popping noises all night - we barely slept. Front desk staff was wonderful, but overall I would've rather paid more to stay anywhere else.
- 5/5
All worked great i really like staying there.

Property had no air conditioning, one 2 prong outlet in main part and one outlet in bathroom . They charged 30 a night to park even though the sign outside said $27 , room was very worn and dated. Was not a good value for the money
- 4/5
It felt like a real stay in San Francisco, without all the hotel chains on top. The property conditions could be better but they were not bad, it was comfortable, would recommend.
- 3/5
The hotel was fine. There were marks on the walls and doors (like they had never been wiped down in 100 years. The carpet is dirty and needs to be replaced with hardwood. Phone did not work. Crumbled dry wall dust/plaster in all corners of the room. Bed comfy. No AC, loud outside with the window open. I would not stay here again but it did the job. Lovely vintage looking lobby and nice staff.
- 4/5
Very convenient location for exploring SF
- 5/5
Lots of of good markets and places to eat. Walkable and safe.
- 2/5
Rooms are outdated, stairs steep, elevator works but is small. Parking lot is behind hotel but is pay to park lot for the public and guests. Neighborhood is very dirty and very questionable after dark. Front lobby was very nice they should improve th rest of the hotel as well
- 1/5
Place was run down, pretty upset they charge as much as they do. Rokm stunk, hasnt been renovated in decades.
- 1/5
I never stayed here and was billed for it

Odor
- 1/5
Old and crumbling with bug
- 3/5
Also the tv stand was broken and the bed had no headboards (although the mattresses were comfy). Note — the lower “cleanliness” score was for the smell in the halls and room. The room was perfectly clean but had a stronger odor than most older hotels (but we know it is hard to mask the odors that old hotels accrue). Thank for a generally lovely stay and nice staff. I offer this feedback ONLY so you can improve for others. David

Property was good. San Fran is not that good, lots of homeless and dirty.

Great staff and hotel, just research the area a little before you go exploring, towards the civic centre is fine but the other way is definitely confronting. I really liked the staff here.
- 5/5
Great place for the price
- 1/5
Photos of hotels shown on website are completely different from actual conditions. property and rooms were old and rundown and no A/C
- 1/5
No AC, windows bolted shut, flies everywhere in our room, oh ya, and there was a literal disintegrated turd in the toilet. So ya, don't recommend this spot...
- 1/5
I booked my stay at the embassy hotel for two days, the rooms and lobby looked decent until I actually arrived. Walking up to the hotel I saw a couple drug addicts overdosing. When I walked into the hotel lobby to speak to the front desk person his mood was very dry. He gave us the key to the room, walking through the hallway I noticed everything looked old and run down. Once we got into our room the first thing that hit me was a strong foul odor of urine. The beds looked dingy and badly stained, the walls were very thin so you could easily hear the neighbors conversation. My wife and I were already tired from our flight but couldn’t stomach the smell so we checked out within 45min after our arrival.
- 5/5
Low cost and good condition

ignore the bad reviews this place was a good place to stay with secure parking behind the building that wasn’t hard to find at all if you take your time to look. the area didn’t feel unsafe

If you’re looking for a cheap place to stay in San Francisco, the Embassy Hotel at 610 Polk Street certainly fits that category, but know exactly what you’re getting. The building is old, and it shows—hallways and rooms carry a musty smell, and the photos online don’t really match the reality. My room had a cracked toilet with water on the bathroom floor, and the overall condition felt neglected. There’s no air conditioning in any of the rooms, only heaters, which makes it uncomfortable during warm days. No microwave was available in the room, either. The staff were polite and willing to help when asked, but they didn’t seem especially enthusiastic, more like they were just going through the motions. To be fair, they did respond quickly to basic requests, but it wasn’t enough to offset the environment. The neighborhood is one of the biggest drawbacks. This part of Polk is rough, with large homeless encampments and a generally unsafe feeling, especially after dark. It’s not the type of area you’d want to walk around in late at night. Overall, this place is very much “you get what you pay for.” The nightly rate feels overpriced for what’s actually provided—I’d say it’s closer in value to a $25 per night motel. Unless your top priority is the lowest possible cost and you don’t care about comfort or surroundings, I’d suggest looking elsewhere in San Francisco.
- 1/5
The rooms are very old. It seemed like someone wiped there dirty hands on the wall. The shower curtain had mold at the bottom of it. The paint on the walls and in the shower had peeled off. At the top of the shower had little bugs smushed into the ceiling. The chair looked dirty. Also there isn’t an ac unit, iron, or ironing board. They had a blow dryer but it looked really dirty. I really don’t know how they are open. It had a smell of cigarettes and soiled carpets.
- 4/5
Perfectly fine/nice hotel. Super unsafe area so when I got in late I had to just doordash food, but the staff was helpful and kind. Thank you!

Really nice hotel, with a beautiful lobby. The room was very comfortable and clean. Would have liked more towels.
- 4/5
Check in easy, room was good enough, bathroom looks pretty outdated, toilet flush is so loud.
- 3/5
Cracked paint on the walls, slight musty scent. Overly warm. Noise from the street / attached parking lot all night.
- 2/5
It was terrible, the shower drain got clough it was just dirty

The hotel waa very loud most of the night.

TV didn’t work at all, mattress is filthy and unsafe. Do not go to this area or hotel!!!

Stay was great, the only thing I wish they hotel had is A/C. Service was great, Bill was friendly and helpful. Hotel was clean, rooms were clean as well
- 4/5
It was ok. All the door personal was accommodating. But no shuttle transport to the airport sucked!! Paid $60 fo an uber. SMH

The street next to it is a bit dangerous, but the street the hotel is on is fine. Very good for the affordable prices!

When Expectations Collide with Reality From the moment my husband, our friend, and I stepped into the hotel, our anticipation turned to concern. Though the front desk staff were truly exceptional—courteous, attentive, and a genuine highlight of our stay—unfortunately, that is where the positive aspects ended. A strong, unpleasant smell of smoke greeted us in the lobby and lingered throughout the building. When we entered our assigned room, we were met with further disappointment: the bed covers appeared to be repurposed curtains, some marked by visible make-up stains. The carpet underfoot was sticky and unclean, while the curtains were tattered with holes. The furniture seemed to have been untouched since the 1930s, adding to an overwhelming sense of neglect. Hoping for an improvement, I requested a different room, only to find that each alternative offered was in a worse condition than the last. The parking lot itself was no reprieve, as it was tainted by the smell of urine. The environment was so distressing that we could not bear to stay for even an hour without feeling physically ill. When I expressed my concerns to the front desk, I was told that Hilton had recently purchased the property and renovations were on the horizon. Yet I was left to wonder: why keep a hotel open when its current state falls so far below any reasonable standard? Despite the severity of our situation, the hotel offered no compensation.
- 4/5
It’s a classic old hotel. Some upgrades but not 21st century. If you’re looking for modern crisp environment this isn’t it. If you want to indulge in a classic well kept up hotel this would be it. Unfortunately the hotel will not be a hotel much longer. It was sold and according to web news converted into low income housing. Will see.

Property was great for the price, staff was friendly. Only problem was surrounding area was dirty felt unsafe

- 4/5
BUT, it is still doable. The price is too high for what it is though! Location is somewhat good. A block or two north, you'll see a fre homeless, but it is a peaceful area. Parking costs $30 a night. But you can go in n out several times.
- 3/5
Seems like room was never cleaned
- 1/5
I don't recommend it. It's more like a hostel than a hotel.
- 3/5
Inconvenient parking, and it costs $30 a day
- 1/5
The hotel is cheap, but that’s also the only positive thing to say.
- 4/5
This hotel is a block away from city hall, civic center plaza and other gorgeous buildings. We were within walking distance to bus stops, Bart stations and other local transit. We did not want to be in heart of tourist area and this was perfect. We loved that we could walk to local restaurants, cafes & bakeries, because of the proximity to government buildings, many places close by 8pm. As long as you are aware of that, its a good place to stay. I think people forget that San Fran is an old city with old buildings (thats the charm). I like that those buildings are repurposed, (hotels, shops, restaurants) and are not completely gutted to make them look brand new (if you want something new, gray and boring, stay somewhere else). I like that the hotel bathroom had the old tiles, small elevator and people were friendly and helpful. This hotel is cute, roomy and simple, we slept & kept our stuff there. There is no A/C, but you dont need it (visited in August from AZ) we kept the window open and at 3am it was really cold.
- 3/5
The hotel was old, my mattress had a very large burn hole in it, the bathroom was dirty, and a lot of the fixtures and doors didn't close right. We didn't feel terribly safe but we are from Alaska and can hold our own. You get what your pay for and the location was nice for walking and right in the heart of the city. The price matched what we stayed in I guess.

We arrived an hour before check in. Front desk was accommodating and got us checked in right away. The hotel is obviously dated however, it is very unique. Pricing of the hotel I found was rather cheap compared to many of the other hotels I searched around the area. The rooms were clean. The beds are in dire need of an upgrade as they are dirty, old and very uncomfortable. There is no air conditioning in the room but, there is a big window that opens up with fresh air that is perfect! There was also a mini fridge in the room. Free wifi internet access. The hotel is easy to find from the main market street and is central downtown. The area does have homeless people wondering or resting however, they did not bother us at all. I found the majority of the areas where we walked there were homeless people so it’s not just in the hotel area. All in all the hotel could use some upgrades, the staff are super friendly and hardworking. I would definitely stay here again if I ever go back to San Francisco.
- 5/5
It’s an old hotel in the tenderloin. If you keep your expectations realistic, it’s a great hotel!! It’s not for the super delicate or boogie oriented folks. We absolutely loved our stay. Great food right outside the door, a parking lot around the corner, awesome music venue around the block. Wish I could do the whole weekend all over again.
- 5/5
For the price, this place is 5 stars. However you need to bring the mindset that you are in the Tenderloin. Once inside the hotel, it is safe and welcoming. Staff were excellent. You are also near the 49 bus and bart station. Food options were average nearby. They do have a microwave on the mezzanine level. Contrary to the hotel listing, they do provide bed sheets. Beds were great and room condition for the price was great. WiFi is fast, about 100Mbps down and 75 up. I was able to work from this hotel with no issues.
- 2/5
The bathroom flush so loud I thought it was breaking down. Parking was expensive but it’s what it is not coming back
- 2/5
Found out after we got there it was in Tenderloin area. Lyft drivers told us some streets to stay away from. Had i known before we would not have stayed here. Beds were terrible, hard and could feel all the coils. No air conditioning. Had to open windows part way (no screens and on 3rd floor) to get air flow. Noisy, sirens, loud music outside at night.
- 5/5
Liked it a lot

The worst experience of my life. I had a paid room for 6 days. A layover went bad because of spirit airlines couldn’t get a pilot. I called the hotel every 8 hours explaining I was coming however late. After the first night I couldn’t check in they labeled me as a no show took my money and booked my room. The hotel manager apologized about the mistake, however it took a week to get only half my money back. Leaving me a 62 year old man stranded in San Fransico with little money and no where to go. Sham on them !!!
- 5/5
Overall we had a great stay. The hotel is old but has charm. The area around isn’t the greatest but we weren’t there to spend a ton of time at the hotel. I would stay there again!
- 4/5
Good location, public transportation is easy to take. As for the facilities, they are very good; cleaning doesn’t happen very often, but overall it was a very good experience.
- 2/5
I booked 2 rooms for my family and I to stay for 4 nights. Its an older hotel in SF near the civic center, close to attractions and public transit, makes it easy to get around town. You have to pay $30/day for parking. Parking lot is secured and my vehicle was safe. I felt safe in the neighborhood. Housekeeping have to be requested. I stayed for 4 nights. After 3rd night, I requested housekeeping and was told they are short of housekeepers for the day. The hotel couldn't have 2 rooms cleaned so we stayed the entire stay with no housekeeping
- 2/5
Bathroom mold, no working fan, very small room, noisy, very difficult parking
- 2/5
OK for the price. would not go back. too noise, didn't feel safe at night

The surrounding neighborhood was much worse than we expected, even knowing that we were going to be in The Tenderloin. The “walk” to Golden Gate Park, was not walkable.

Reasonable price point and cleanliness given its age. Great staff! Recommend removing carpets though. Strong urin smell. Had to keep window open for air.

It was so bad I decided to drive 3.5 hours home instead of staying. I would of been 10 times better at a motel 6

First they were three people in the room and gave us only one towel and we ask for more and gave us three towels and we requested hand towels and wash towels and the guy at the front desk said he would be back to give us them and never came back, then the first night we were woke up by a couple having a fight and he was treating to kill whoever he was with and I called the front desk to let them know and no one came to stop them..

The desk clerk was very friendly and quick to check us in. The lobby was clean and the whole hotel seemed to be very clean. Unfortunately, despite the signs that say “smoke free” establishment, our bathroom reeked of cigarette smoke to the point it was making me nauseous and we had to keep the window open. The bed was comfortable enough, but the walls were so thin we could hear so much noise throughout the hotel.

Very basic, don’t expect much. The paint on the walls is peeling, we could smell the rug, there was a bit of mold in the bathroom and gnats coming out of the shower’s drain. The bed was old and after a couple of days gave us a back pain. Very noisy outside and area is not safe to be out alone at night.

Pros was safe area, had security for parking, locked front doors, easy access, close to a lot of things
