Reviews
The hotel is generally well-liked for its cleanliness, comfort, and friendly staff. However, many guests express concerns about the surrounding area, feeling unsafe due to the presence of homeless people and drug addicts. Parking is also a common issue, with some guests finding it inconvenient, expensive, or unavailable.

The inside is very charming. Downtown with old world charm. It has recently been updated and well kept. Bed was comfortable The parking!!! They don’t explain that even when you pay for secure parking, it might be off sight and you have to walk from the underground garage in downtown San Francisco. There was a homeless man laying right in front of the hotel as you walk in. The staff that checked me in, seemed bothered to answer my questions. I also requested a room with a bathtub over 2-3 months ago. They did not give deliver on that request. I find it hard to believe that they could not plan better given several months notice. Also I don’t mean anything bad towards the cleaning staff. They were very kind but There are 2 small elevators and during the day they use the back one(right next to my room) to go up and down to turn around rooms. It took 3 times before I could get on it. There is also only 5 floors. I just will not be returning to stay there mainly because of the front desk

Place felt like a boutique hotel without the price tag. Great location with lots of great food options nearby. Felt safe with key card needed to enter hotel, hallways and elevator. I would stay here again.

Location was awful. Nearby streets were full of dirt and dozens of homeless/addicted people, I didn't feel safe.

Room was great! Elevator was super cramped and barely fit my daughter’s wheelchair.
- 5/5
I have stayed here multiple times and each time the staff has been amazing and the room always clean.
- 5/5
The area was very nice, with lots of public transportation around. At check-in, the staff were very nice and apologetic for the wait as there were a few people in front of me. The room was very nice and clean, as well as cold. I believe, there were only 2 elevators to go up to the rooms. The only downside really was that the bathrooms and the gym were downstairs.

This was a beautiful hotel, well-maintained and conveniently located! The one frustration was that the front door was always locked, with no sign for guests to buzz for entry. Not the most welcoming hotel entrance when we arrived!

Great decor, close to the concert venue our son was going to. Parking was a bit difficult so we had to circle around a few times until the front desk guy came out and explained it was confusing. We appreciated him taking time off to explain how to find public parking since their parking lot was full.

I have stayed here for 20 years, it was The Opal and it has been gorgeously remodeled but has all the things I love before. In and out enclosed parking, Mel’s Diner attached so food mostly anytime, comfortable beds👍, conveniently located at Van Ness and Geary Street so Ubers and cabs etc are easy. Tommy’s Joint an SF favorite for great food, beer and cocktails across the street. And a big movie theater practically next door. Very reasonable price for how nice it is now.

room was clean staff was polite we were next to a loud room full of people and there was construction all night on the street so didn't get much sleep. Most likely will not stay here again as I only made the reservation because it said there was onsite parking, but they don't have enough spaces for their guests.
- 5/5
I needed a clean, comfortable room for the night and that’s what I got.
- 4.5/5
The hotel and room were very comfortable and clean. The room had almost all of the amenities that you would expect in a nice hotel, including shampoo, conditioner and bath soap dispensers inside the shower stall. I would have liked to have access to a free coffee/tea bar where creamers and sugar/honey were available for making my morning tea. The elevator was unusually slow.

I also loved the selection at the market. The local San Francisco ice cream was absolutely delicious. If you’re visiting downtown, this would be a great and interesting option to consider.
- 5/5
the location was perfect for my needs I should have asked for a room off the street. There is a hospital across the street and the noise from sirens woke me through the night.
- 5/5
Great service and location. Parking garage just across from the hotel. We try to stay here when we’re in SF.
- 5/5
Clean, friendly staff, and nearby good attractions.
- 5/5
The housekeeping team pride themselves in perfection. They pay such attention to detail. The hotel is the gold standard in hospitality and quality. Thanks Courtyard by Marriott.
- 4/5
Very nice and elegant There is essentially hardly any parking at this hotel. They close down the gates at a certain time and will refuse to let you park in their garage if checking in by a certain time. I had to spend extra just to park across the way at a meter
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel close to medical appointments. Room was small but beautiful lobby/common areas were cozy and functional for visiting and having a meal. Would stay here again.
- 4/5
Clean room, convenient location, friendly staff, nice looking property. Internet was slow.

The location of the facility was conveniently located around everything we wanted to see. The staff was pleasant, but the parking situation could use improvement. There were available parking spots in the upper garage, but we were routed to the lower level. The beds in the room were uncomfortable. The room itself was clean and nicely decorated, but the beds and pillows were not very comfortable.
- 5/5
Lovely hotel, easy parking and kind staff.

- 5/5
The property was very well maintained. The staff was amazing and I love the gated garage. I must say the beds were so comfortable even the pillows were the perfect amount of fluff and comfort. I absolutely loved the decor inside the hotel. It had its own charm. We definitely took advantage and took some beautiful pictures. There’s absolutely nothing negative. I have to say about this property.

- 3/5
I liked the space we were a family of 7. I loved the balcony window but the bathroom is right in front of the beds and there was no lock for privacy No locks on bathroom door and you can feel the cold come in from the outside
- 5/5
Very clean, great attached cafe, great laundry room, safe parking, helpful staff, beautiful lobby. Only downside is that it is on the edge of SF's redlight district called "The Tenderloin". Some of the nonsense spills over to this area but it's manageable.
- 5/5
Very I felt safe
- 5/5
Great room and excellent service!
- 4/5
Spotless room and bath room second stay here, great front desk staff, only thing that makes it not a five star is low shower water pressure and very uncomfortable beds there in need of a change
- 5/5
right across the street from the hospital parking was odd...they tell you to pull up to the first gate when actually you need to go to the second gate
- 4/5
The restaurant is so expensive. I ordered a Sprite to take to my room and it was $7.50
- 5/5

Clean room. Friendly staff. Convenient location. Quiet location. Room with double beds was smaller than expected. Too small for 3 people. Bathroom had no counter room to place toiletries. Very few extras like lotion not provided.
- 2.5/5
Room was pricey for a tiny room looking out to a brick wall
- 4.5/5

- 5/5
The room was spacious and clean! Bedding was very nice and comfortable. The location was central and close to the Opera House which was the reason for our visit. We did have a hard time finding a restaurant close by after the performance and ended up eating next door to the hotel at Mel's. Not exactly a meal to remember but it honestly wasn't bad. Parking garage was very convenient and dare I say affordable at $49 with in/out priledges. I would definitely stay at the Courtyard location again!
- 3/5
In the Tenderloin district, which does not feel so comfortable and/or safe. Hotel Parking was full so we had to park in a public parking garage over a block away which was super inconvenient when you have a bunch of luggage to carry inside, especially in that kind of environment. Staff was nice but seemed overwhelmed and underpaid, poor guy. Price = quality in SF.
- 5/5
Great spot in SF!

beautiful hotel at a great location! staff was very friendly; room was clean and comfortable.
- 2/5
Very small and out side was unsafe
- 5/5
Happy to have stayed here as a stopover in San Francisco.
- 5/5
Really good hotel stay at very clean and safe.
- 5/5
Beautifully updated and modernized while keeping features of its vintage architecture. Much attention to safety in the building and parking area. Nice gymnasium. We enjoyed our stay.
- 5/5
Room was terrific. Central location. Great staff.
- 5/5
The room was very clean and organized. I would recommend it and most likely come back in the future.
- 4/5
The building is nicely renovated. We did have no AC our first night. Staff was great and mels diner was great too. The surrounding area isn't the best for families but being able to waymo around helped.
- 4/5
The AC didn’t work for the most part of our trip, but the hotel provided a fan. Although it helped, it wasn’t enough to cool down through out the day.
- 4/5
The ac was out. We werent notified. Only a fan was offered
- 2/5
The air conditioning was not working during our stay. The rooms were extremely hot.
- 5/5
Hotel was beautiful, in a more rough part of the city
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
Love the security here and the front staff. They always remember my wife and I. Best hotel in my opinion in San Francisco. See you guys in December
- 4/5
Booked this hotel as I have an early check in for procedure at the CPMC campus across the street. Checkin process is quick. Hotel is beautiful and room is clean.
- 5/5
Perfect location
- 4/5
Only caveat Parking situation was not ideal but doable
- 3/5
There is a confusion on Expedia booking when it says parking and breakfast is available. Be clear if it is included or not instead of confusing the customer.
- 4/5
Property was nice just wish i could park in the facility
- 5/5
Everything was perfect starting with Maria at the front desk.
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
The staff was the best part of the hotel.
- 4/5
It was very clean, staff were pleasant and very accommodating. Looked exactly like the photos on line. Would definitely stay again.
- 2/5
Not great. The area is riddled with homeless drug addicts at every entrance. It felt dangerous my wife refused to stay another night and we booked another hotel in a different location. The hote refused to help me refund the remaining 2 days we had booked.
- 5/5
Nice location. Beautiful room
- 5/5
It was a last minute trip and the hotel and staff were great!
- 5/5
It was a nice reasonably priced hotel. Parking is way expensive than other hotels. We didn’t use the parking. We parked other at another place for cheaper.
- 5/5
Great place to stay
- 5/5
Very pretty and safe. Close to shops and restaurants
- 5/5
Bed was on the softer side but slept well enough!
- 5/5
Finding entrance to Parking was a bit difficult for the first time.
- 5/5
Great location and easy transport locally
- 5/5
We’ve stayed here before and we will absolutely stay here again
- 4/5
This property was conveniently located for my visit. Overall hotel was quiet, however the building across the street began installing scaffolding at 5am. Not the hotel’s fault, but disruptive. I would prefer not to be buzzed in for the parking lot, but I’m sure this is for security reasons.
- 5/5
Perfect base for my activity-filled weekend in San Francisco. Close to public transportation and the arts district.
- 3/5
The property itself is good but check in was challenging as there was no good place to park close by. I learnt later that I should had head to their parking even though it was gated, locked and needed key card. They would have buzzed me but there was no way to tell that from outside
- 5/5
I appreciate the location and convenience. Quiet and clean.
- 5/5
Great place, just limited parking, the rooms are nice but need more art
- 5/5
Fantastic hotel in a very bad area ..
- 5/5
The Courtyard Marriott on Van Ness is a wonderful hotel. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere has a charming, art-inspired boutique feel. The rooms are comfortable and well-designed, with bathrooms that feature beautiful tile work and glass shower doors. While the surrounding area does have some homeless individuals, I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable. This is mainly an issue at night, but using Uber or other rideshares makes it easy to avoid any concerns.
- 5/5
I would stay here again. Clean and quiet hotel . Overall satisfied with hotel and staff.
- 5/5
Clean property, friendly staff, nice amenities
- 2/5
Not a very nice location. Not convenient for parking. Staff was unhelpful. No one told us when we checked in that the hotel had catastrophic failure of their HVAC system or that there were fans available. Our room was horribly hot for our entire stay. Twice we nearly ran over people sleeping in the hotel gated entrance for parking. Usually Marriott is our go-to for stays, it might not be after this.
- 4/5
Small parking space as well as room size
- 5/5
Everything was perfect other than our room was pretty warm. Not sure of we didnt set the temperature right, but we set it all the way down to 62 and its still warm. We have option to open the window, but it was too loud outside to do so. Other than that, we loved it.
- 2/5
The bathroom matt was wet and the roo had a smell
- 5/5
A great little place in the middle of theatres, restaurants, and some great little bars!
- 5/5
Parking seems secure Street outside full of loitering people.
- 5/5
Amazing hotel. I’m talking absolutely beautiful. Most condo bed I’ve ever slept in.
- 5/5
We love it here, Our favorite place to stay in Tenderloin area. Great safety measure and nice rooms. Friendly staff and close to a music venue we go to frequently. See ya all in December.
- 5/5
Friendly staff. Clean room. Very accommodating for us with having family in the hospital across the street.
- 5/5
Hotel was nice. But, lots of homeless people nearby. Beware.
- 5/5
Nice central location. Staff was vey kind, helpful.
- 4/5
We really liked the hotel. It was convenient, comfortable and had a very nice staff. There's a great diner on site. The hotel is very safe. There's lots of security, but not a lot of parking at the hotel itself... it's first come, first served. If you get an assigned parking place, you do have in/out privileges. If you don't get parking at the hotel, there's a good parking structure close by. However, as a woman, I would not have felt safe walking in the area alone. I was fine with my husband along, but we were both relieved when a parking space became available at the hotel. The homeless set up camp in the area at night. Too bad, because it's a really nice place to stay.
- 5/5
Check in was easy. Locating parking garage was easy. Walking distance to many things
- 5/5
Very friendly staff. Accommodating to people with family at the hospital
- 5/5

- 5/5
Friendly service, convenient parking, nice room.
- 5/5
Great hotel, downtown area
- 4/5
Was perfect for a work conference
- 5/5
Really beautiful property. We ended up with a room that did not face the outside so it was incredible quiet. I’m a really light sleeper and did not hear a sound. Would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Staff was super helpful and friendly!!! Would highly recommend this hotel
- 5/5
The location was great ,close to Transportation right outside the door.Mels downstairs has great food ,breakfast and dinner .
- 5/5
Very nice hotel with onsite parking
- 5/5
Had a pleasant stay at the courtyard. Big spacious room, with a clean bed . Love the safe gated car parking. Loved that the concierge greeted us with bottles of water for our stay. 5/5
- 5/5
Clean, beautifully decorated, quiet
- 5/5
Beautiful kept up older property in downtown San Francisco near the Sutter hospital on Van Ness. The room was freshly remodeled, small, but cute and very comfortable.
- 2/5
The property is under an area where I didn't feel safe. Also, an employee open the door to my room during a Saturday afternoon. Did not knock or called out, just opened the door and walked in.
- 3/5
Ok
- 5/5
Despite a little hard to find the staff was very helpful
- 5/5
Great location and safe
- 2/5
Checking in was a circus , front door was locked no staff at front desk
- 5/5
Everything was near and just a nice place to stay for a quick trip
- 5/5
Wow! BEAUTIFUL hotel. EXTREMELY secure. The suites are spacious with many amenities. LOVED our stay. Would definitely return!!!
- 2/5
Doesn’t have face towels, not enough coffee cups and no trash can in the bedroom.
- 5/5
Very nice facility. Although restaurants were close by, no room service.
- 5/5
The hotel is great, if they don't have parking available there are a couple of garages nearby which end up being cheaper. Only problem is the hotel is right at the edge of an unpleasant neighbourhood, so plenty of unpleasant people just a block away
- 4/5
This is a great place to stay to access the Opera, Ballet, symphony, City Hall and Hayes Valley. It is on the edge of the tenderloin but unlike many of the other good choices in the area you do not actually need to wak through the Tenderloin to get there. It has everything you need, is comfortable and clean and does the job.
- 4/5
I liked the hotel a lot! However, I felt very unsafe walking alone (woman) in the neighbourhood, even during day time.
- 4/5
A lot of people “hanging out” both sides of the hotel.
- 5/5
Well kept and nice hotel
- 2/5
When booking our hotel the photos of the room/common area looked beautiful and we were so excited for our stay. However when we arrived, we realized that the parking garage gates were down. We checked in and were told the lot was ‘full’ and we would have to park in the garage down the street which ended up costing us $30 for the 2 nights we stayed. We were hoping to grab a spot in the garage early morning/midday as we arrived late for check in but the gate never opened up which was pretty frustrating. The room was very mediocre and quite small for a king room. The bed was hard and pretty uncomfortable and the pillows flattened within seconds of laying down. The aesthetic of the hotel was lovely but the room/parking situation was very low tier and not very relaxing. The staff however was very nice. We have stayed in the Holiday Inn just down the street on Van Ness before but wanted to try a new spot as this place seemed a little fancier. However we much would have rather stayed at the Holiday Inn as we were given a spot in the parking garage, breakfast was included and the room was much more spacious for the same price. We were hoping for more from the Marriott!
- 5/5
The courtyard was amazing! Got a room upgrade for it being our wedding day, and got concession vouchers. The room was beautiful, clean and very spacious. Bed was super comfy and shower was great size
- 5/5
Comfy Bed!!!
- 5/5
Clean friendly staff
- 5/5
I loved the cleanliness and the gated parking on property. Made my overall stay enjoyable.
- 4/5
Good hotel.
- 1/5
I did not have enough money for the incidental fee. I have stayed at this hotel twice prior in the last two months. Each time I was charged a $20 incidental fee. Tonight $100 was requested and I said I was unable to do that. I showed my receipts for the $20 incidental fees on my previous stays and asked why the fee was so much more this time and said I could do a fee of $50. I did not appreciate the response and conversation between the two employees at the front desk right after I said that. The employee not checking me in said to the other employee “it’s your call. You can charge $20” and the employee checking me in scoffed at that and said he wouldn’t do that. I was never given a key or checked in and I had to leave. Again my room had been paid for prior to me arriving. I had to drive an hour back to where I live. I’m very hurt and disturbed by what happened. The employees could have refunded me last night. I’ve had to message and call this morning trying to get a refund. Instead I get to feel embarrassed and shamed AGAIN explaining I couldn’t afford the incidental fee trying to get a refund.

I barely slept. It was awful. That smell. Oh my god. Would never stay here again and it is definitely not a safe area to be walking around at any time of day. Very disappointing.
- 5/5

- 5/5
It is a comfprtable stay...I did not like paying $59 for parking on top of the room fee and then we got a lower parking spot where we had to walk up a flight of stairs just to go to the upper parking pad to get in the hotel
- 5/5
Meet my needs
- 5/5
Chose this location because it had on site parking. However, when we checked in, their parking was full & we had to go to a public parking structure a block over. Not a huge deal, just a bit inconvenient.
- 5/5
It was a great stay and the hotel felt very safe.
- 5/5
Helpful staff, great location
- 4/5
I loved the hotel and staff. I didn't like the fact that I could not get any reward points on my Marriot Bonvoy account because I booked the stay with Expedia.

Arriving is a nightmare there was no sign pointing to our room number on the floor. If u are arriving by car they should give you instructions on how to find the secret entrance
