Reviews
The hotel is highly praised for its convenient location, with many tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. Guests also appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms, and comfortable beds. However, some guests find the rooms to be small and mention issues with the air conditioning.
- Convenient location
- Friendly and helpful staff

Affordable and comfortable, with friendly staff and a great location. The hotel is a bit on the older side, but it’s kept clean overall. They go the extra mile by offering not only water, coffee, and tea, but also tasty cookies and apples in the lobby. Small touches like these can make a big difference when you're traveling. The room felt a little stiff, but opening the window for a few hours helped improve the airflow. Since my room faces a busy street, I could hear the noise from nearby events, so bringing earplugs might be a good idea if you're a light sleeper. Overall, I’d recommend this hotel for budget travelers and would happily stay here again.

The bed was so comfortable! The location is great, and the staff is quite helpful. The bathroom could use some renovation.
- 3.5/5
Location It was just ok.
- 5/5
Very convenient area. We have stayed here many tines. A block near the Union square and parking under, and Macys. Restaurant and stores around.
- 5/5
Great spot in SF. Near Chinatown, upscale stores and awesome restaurants within blocks. Also, places to get nails and hair done or a shopping 🛍️ spree. Apple store close by too.
- 4/5
Great central location for a short break - the cable car goes by the front door. Comfortable rooms, fresh and clean. Really friendly and helpful staff. Limited food facilities. But they did have fresh home baked cookies every day.
- 5/5
A really cool old hotel in a great spot. Nice staff, very clean rooms and property. We didn’t get to use much of the amenities, as we spent most of our time out and about but we will definitely check this place on our next visit.
- 5/5
Good and comfortable stay
- 4/5
Neat, clean room, good location, comfortable No parking on site. Prepare to pay for parking at a nearby building (40 dollar/day, flat rate). It is valet only. No parking on the street. Rooms have no AC, which is noted in the description but good to remember.
- 5/5
This grand SF hotel is lit up by the kindness of its well-trained staff. The rooms, furnished simply, are comfortable in every respect. The full-service bathtubs are a rare luxury. I make sure to stay at the Chancellor every time I visit from NYC (yearly). A great institution continuously renewing itself.
- 5/5
The room was amazing.
- 4/5
Very good
- 4.5/5
Great location just by Union Square. Booked 2 rooms but unfortunately they were not connecting rooms (but on the same floor). One of the corner rooms was very spacious and bright. The other much smaller. Loved the lemon infused water and cookies at the lobby. Even though there was no aircon in the rooms, we felt very comfortable with just the ceiling fan. Would definitely stay here again. Check in was a little slow as the staff was overwhelmed by many people checking out at the same time. Tv cabinet surface was very dusty. However, other areas of the room were clean. One of the corner rooms we had was by the lift. It had a very narrow entry way as well as an irregular shaped bathroom. Barely enough space to move around in the bathroom.
- 1.5/5
Poor
- 2/5
I was not happy waiting one hour after the stated check-in time simply because the hotel is understaffed. I also did not appreciate my son being singled out when he entered the hotel and being asked for his room number. The wait times for checking in keep increasing and employees seem to be lacking in number and manners. This hotel has seen better days.
- 4.5/5
Convenient location, friendly staff, clean rooms and facilities
- 5/5
Conveniently located to cable cars and Union Station
- 4/5
The staff were extremely helpful and polite. The hotel is clean and well maintained. The only issue I had with the room is that the bathroom mirror is so old, some of the silver backing is showing through. The beds were very comfortable. Alicia at the bar was also great helping me come up with ideas to spend the last day in SF with my daughter.
- 5/5
Room was very clean, eco friendly offers, and 24 hours(?) coffee/snack bar at the lobby. Staff were friendly. Great value.
- 4.5/5
Superb
- 3/5
I liked the location as well as free coffee station/water station in the lobby. This hotel does not have a gym, and it was an issue for me.
- 4.5/5
Location to union square, walking distance to breakfast at sears restaurant next door, walgrens 1 min walk away and plenty of choices for dinner No kettle in room for a hot cuppa, but there's facilities in lobby area
- 5/5
It’s a nice boutique hotel.
- 5/5
The roof was amazing, we really enjoyed ourselves. The staff I found to be a little down. I am not sure if they were overloaded but they were very short with us. But the rooms and the property were very amazing. We are definitely going back soon.
- 5/5
Staff was great! Room was clean. Bartender made me an excellent martini and we were given a buy one get one drink ticket at check in! The coffee machine was also very good. Great location and charming overall. Would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
The rooms are very comfortable as well as the bathroom and the closet. Very clean. Definitely staying again in the future
- 4.5/5
Great location; clean and comfortable room The lobby is small and a little dark (typical for old hotels). The freshly brewed coffee is rolled out at 8am which is a bit late for early starters.
- 5/5
nice stay!
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
Beautiful Hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. We booked this property last minute and were surprised by how nice everything was. Great value for money in a top central location with nice little extras like happy hour and free snacks. Nothing.
- 5/5
This historic hotel is centrally located on San Francisco’s Union Square, convenient to all modes of public transportation. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and surprisingly quiet, given the hotel’s proximity to the Powell Street cable car line. Service is efficient and friendly, and prices are reasonable given its location. An older hotel, it does not have a restaurant or coffee shop, though coffee is available in the lobby. Nor does it have any fitness facilities. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance for breakfast or lunch, and if you’re climbing the hills and many steps in San Francisco, you probably don’t need a fitness center. 😊 I would definitely book a room there again.
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly and accomodsting
- 4/5
The room was clean and spacious.
- 4/5
Very good
- 4.5/5
The location is wonderful. The hotel was charming and staff was very friendly. The room was clean and bed was comfortable.
- 4.5/5
Location and price If you are a light sleeper I would recommend somewhere else
- 3.5/5
Good
- 5/5
I was skeptical at first at the price being low for San Francisco, but the reviews were great. We absolutely LOVED this gem of a hotel! The room was super clean, the beds were very comfortable, and there was even a pillow menu! The staff was friendly, the coffee was delicious, and there were delicious looking fresh baked cookies available. I only wish they had gluten free cookies. I highly recommend this gem of a hotel. The location at Union Square is nice especially with the cable car right out front! Ican't wait to come back!
- 5/5
The hotel staff is friendly, informative and very helpful. Our room was clean and well maintained. The bar is great and you may get a free drink by buying one 😊. Parking is half a block away and the hotel is in a great location. You are just a half block away from Union Square. Reasonably priced and a great value.
- 4/5
Great hotel right next to union square and with easy access to buses and trains and walkable distance to many attractions. Hotel served cookies, fruits and had a self service latte machine and water dispenser. Friendly and helpful staff. Quiet even though in the middle of the city.
- 5/5
The property was unique and very clean. It was in the perfect central location for all the fun activities. The coffee, tea, water and fresh baked cookies were a nice treat. Can’t think of anything that needs improved
- 3/5
The bed was very uncomfortable and the lack of AC without windows having screens dampened the experience.
- 5/5
It was very clean and well maintained. Enjoyed the drink coupon and cookies. Nice place. I will stay again and recommend. Great location and convenient! Work out a deal with Sears next door for breakfast coupon!
- 5/5
Conveniently located to the convention center, public transportation, restaurants and shopping.
- 4/5
Overall very happy with the stay. Hotel is in a good location for any visiting tourist. The staff were extremely helpful. The room itself was good, just what i was looking for.
- 3/5
There is no Continental Breakfast. They have refreshments, all day, coffee, tea, infused water, apples, cookies and popcorn in the afternoon and evening. There is no restaurant. There is no air. Me thinking that would be okay because it's always usually cold in San Francisco, was a huge mistake. It was very hot in the rooms. They do have a ceiling fan and an extra fan, in the room. The room is very small and the hotel is very dated. I would not stay there again and I really wouldn't refer it, due to not having A/C. The staff was great and the location is great, for shopping, dining, catching the cable cart (in front of the hotel) and the Hop on Hop Off Bus (in front of Macy's, 2 short streets down).
- 5/5
A lot of Amenities and very caring
- 5/5
Stayed here for a conference trip. Very convenient location. Room was decent sized and well-maintained. A little fire escape right outside the window, ceiling fan - it was not too hot so really didn't need AC. A nice funky vibe in the neighborhood. Staff were super nice and helpful. Really enjoyed it.
- 4/5
Great hotel in an excellent location! The staff was friendly, the room was clean and comfortable, and everything I wanted to see was within walking distance. I loved the historic charm and would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
The small restaurant/bar is closed Sunday and Monday. It’s a nice small historic hotel steps from Union Square.
- 5/5
I loved the hotel.
- 4/5
)
- 5/5
Fabulous, would stay again!
- 5/5
Too bad there is no breakfast. Excellent location!
- 5/5
The hotel is a little dated, but not unreasonably so. It's pretty historic, so that's to be expected. Also, there is no A/C, but you don't need it because of the climate. The staff was very helpful, professional, and polite.
- 5/5
Really a great place to stay the surroundings is amazing
- 4/5
Toilets are very low to the floor. Bathtub needs to be repaired or replaced (chips, scratches, etc.). The staff is great!
- 5/5
Convenient location, clean and confortable room
- 5/5
Stay was excellent
- 5/5
Fun vintage spot in the heart of SF!!!
- 5/5
Room was clean, convenient location and friendly staff.
- 5/5
This hotel was amazing! It was clean and staff was excellent. The offer popcorn in the lobby for all guests. I would recommend and the location was great.
- 5/5
Great, old school charm and hospitality in the heart of the city. Will visit again!
- 5/5
It's not fancy, the rooms are small (no air conditioning, but a ceiling fan) and you have to go to the lobby for coffee or tea in the morning. But compared to the larger hotels it's quaint, inexpensive, friendly and convenient. There is a refrigerator in the room, and a bar in the lobby. From it's location at Union Square one can walk pretty much anywhere downtown, from Fisherman's Wharf to the Embarcadero to Oracle Park. (For a warm-up we take the stairs to the lobby...) AND you get a Rubber Ducky!
- 4/5
Wi-Fi was not working at all. Bed was too soft on the side. Pillows were not comfortable. Room is not soundproof. I can clearly hear other people coughing in the next room. Other than these, it was a pretty good hotel. Location is perfect. Room is clean and spacious.
- 5/5
Safe clean hotel with a good staff
- 4/5
Bathroom was cramped but clean.
- 5/5
Great location in the middle of shopping and restaurants. Lots of closed stores though in the Union Square area. The hotel is older but the staff are great with clean rooms. Everything worked well and we enjoyed our stay there as usual. We’ve traveled to San Francisco for years but more regularly now that we’ve retired and we usually stay at the Chancellor Hotel. We love the small, family run atmosphere. The cute bar in the lobby is perfect with popcorn and cookies. We don’t drive here so not sure about parking. We like jumping on the cable cars right outside. Walgreens is right up the street for convenience.
- 5/5
Great staff! Pay staff more! Offer some fruit aside from delish coffee in morning!
- 5/5
This was my second visit to the Chancellor. I enjoyed my first visit and plan on making this my go to place to stay when in San Francisco.
- 5/5
The staff was very kind and helpful. I adored the pillow menu! Thank you!
- 5/5
The concierge, Richard, was particularly helpful.
- 5/5
Close to Bart stop for airport and buses The hotel has complimetary coffee and cookies Would choose this hotel again
- 4/5
Good stay
- 5/5
Good location
- 5/5
Convenient location, older well-maintained hotel with thoughtful touches from the lobby to the rooms. I felt like a lucky duck having chosen it!
- 5/5
The Chancellor has a charm to it that can only be earned through decades of service to travelers to San Francisco. I stayed here over 20 years ago, and returning recently, she’s definitely still the warm and hospitable hotel that I remember.
- 5/5
Did I mention clean! This is one of the cleanest hotels, maybe the cleanest hotel in which I have ever stayed. Great location. Less than 1/2 mile from the BART. We're walkers, and it was in walking distance to Chinatown, Alcatraz ferry and Oracle baseball park. Great central location. We took a Lyft to Golden Gate Bridge for less than $20. Great little perks, like popcorn on the week days, mints, apples, cookies, water bottle refill. Very clean unique older hotel. Loved the architecture.
- 5/5
Very good
- 5/5
We were given a complimentary bottle of champagne for our honeymoon. We also really loved the free coffee, cookies & water in the lobby. Beds were super comfy!
- 5/5
Great stay nice
- 5/5
Fantastic location. Rooms are smaller but clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Great value in the heart of Union Square. GREAT little perks like excellent coffee and cookies. Comfortable beds and pillows.
- 4/5
Good location and value. Decent rooms. Showing its age.
- 5/5
Super location in union square, right in front of bus stop and the cable car!!
- 5/5
I love it! Amazing location, great deal, amazing amenities, I want to come back!!
- 5/5
Five stars! Great little place!
- 5/5
Great location Great value Staff very friendly and accomodating Walking distance to several outstanding restaurants: Fino - Italian, Parthenon greek were outstanding
- 4/5
Great location but this is a boutique hotel and not a chain so you need to set your expectations. Our room was on the corner of the building so the bathroom door would only open about 2/3's of the way because of how the bathroom was designed. Very clean and safe, but I wouldn't put more than 2 people per room. If you want a boutique hotel experience, this place is great.
- 5/5
Mmmm hmmm
- 5/5
Location, friendliness of staff, and comfortable room. What could be better? Oh yeah, the price is right.
- 5/5
Everything was perfect!
- 5/5
Nice old hotel. Great location.
- 4/5
Clean, basic room that suited our needs. Very good value for San Francisco and conveniently located to cable car and the Muni.
- 5/5
My favorite place to stay in the City. Great location, bar, staff, service and cool old building. It is one of the last family owned hotels in the city, so if you want a true SF experience, stay here!!
- 5/5
Great value hotel in a great location! Not much for onsite amenities but walking distance from lots of good spots. It also has good character.
- 4/5
Clean, good quality towels. Pleasant staff. Great location. A bargain.
- 4/5
The hotel was clean and in a nice area, room was nice and was clean. The only thing was I got a room on the second floor in the corner, the window was facing a wall with nothing to see, no sun no light and you can hear the toilet flush from the top room. Would I stay here again? yes I would but this time I would choose a different room.
- 4/5
Clean room, cookies or popcorn in the lobby.
- 4/5
Clean room and great location!
- 5/5
Excellent as always
- 4/5
Right next to Union Square
- 5/5
Very nice hotel. The rooms are bit dated, but it was clean and well located.
- 5/5
Great little hotel in the heart of San Francisco. Close to Chinatown and good bars and restaurants.
- 4/5
Hotel was very central to everything. Great location! Hotel is old and very cool how they have kept that look. No AC which I knew but rooms can get warm. Bartender was awesome.
- 3/5
Little janky and dirty, but gets the job done!
- 5/5
Nice hotel and close to Union Square.
- 5/5
The bar have good stock
- 5/5
Room was comfortable, clean, and quiet at the back. We appreciate the water, coffee and cookies in the lobby.
- 5/5
The bar is tiny but Alicia is amazing. This place is DEFINITELY spooky and you might be staying with more than you bargained for. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
- 5/5
Easy to access and we paid for the underground parking which was less than a 2 minute walk to the hotel. The room was tidy and well equipped. We only stayed for one night but if we return I would look at booking here again.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Bar was fine, fresh cookies were a little too tempting and it was close to so many things. No need for a car at this hotel. Easy walk to both BART and the Trolley.
- 5/5
I always stay at Chancellor when I go to a show in The City! It's my home away from home!
- 5/5
The room was clean, the staff was great, the bartender was nice and friendly.
- 5/5
The hotel is over 100 years old but the room was immaculate the service great. Free lattes free fruit free cookies. They offered several types of pillows. Even a rubber duckie on the bath tub. The staff was so helpful and nice. The location was excellent
- 5/5
Fantastic room, nice staff, could not be more central
- 4/5
Small boutique hotel at the prime location
- 5/5
Much thanks to the such good service
- 5/5
Yet another pleasant stay at the Chancellor.
- 5/5
Excellent location
- 4/5
Great amenities, especially love all the snacks they offer. The popcorn was excellent! Only thing I wish was the mattress was better. It’s overly soft and painful to sleep on. I may not be able to sleep again because of that.
- 5/5
Room was clean and comfortable.
- 3/5
The staff is great. The hotel is clean. The mattresses are awful. They have no support. The middle of the mattresses sank so it felt like we were sleeping in holes. We flipped & rotated. The staff was very accommodating, but they are just bad mattresses.
- 5/5
Lovely people. Great location!!
- 4/5
Our room was on the small side and 40s/50s period dated but perfectly fine, bed was comfortable and shower was hot.
- 5/5
Staff was great.
- 5/5
Everything was great
- 3/5
Cons - A little run down, no a/c, and the bed was pretty uncomfortable. Also, Union Square used to be vibrant, now with so many stores closed there is really no reason to stay in that area - also close to the tenderloin, which at night is not the best place to be.
- 4/5
Unbeatable location at the heart of downtown SF. This property is on the older side but well-maintained and basic with great charm or character and history of San Francisco properties. It isn't refurbished or modern as some other similar hotels in the area are. Hence they do emphasize there is only fan in (most?) rooms which I had no problems with. The elevator and hallways are dated as part of the character of the property. There is a nice bar with happy hour in the lobby! It was overall worth the price I paid for (approx. $120) for a one-night stay in the city and not a luxurious splurge if you are after that, this won't be it.
- 5/5
Loved every detail.
- 4/5
Clean room, nice bathroom, walk-in closet.
- 5/5
This hotel is awesome! I am going to stay there from now on!!!
- 4/5
Fun, old-timey place to stay, but not the most luxurious.
- 5/5
Clean room. Nice beds. Felt safe.
- 5/5
Very nice place. Noisy refrigerator, but I just unplugged it and all was silence. Enormous closets with umbrella, safe, ironing board, iron, spare room heater, etc . I couldn’t be more pleased.
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
Yes
- 2/5
Being a boutique hotel, I try to be very aware of how things are done here. It's an old building so obviously, things will be old too. In the bathroom, there were multiple little flies in there and we even found a dead cockroach in the drawers. It wasn't even worth noting because we were leaving soo anyways but it left a bad taste. Our key cards stopped working mid trip as well.
- 4/5
Clean room; felt safe; no AC
- 5/5
It does not have amenities like a gym, but otherwise, it provides amazing service and friendly staff. Also, free coffee, cookies, and apples every day. It may sound silly, but those are the things that make a difference between good and great customer service.
- 5/5
Nice rooms, just super hot at the top
- 4/5
I liked their services and the room was always cleaned
- 5/5
It is located in a strategic position, all the touristic places are at walkable distance or BART Powell station 2 blocks away or cable cars. Lots of choices. I thought being on the second floor that my sleep could have been disturbed but it was quiet. Price is super compared to nearby hotel. It’s a real deal for the excellent quality and service received. Highly recommended.
- 5/5
Coffee was delicious; loved having water available. Parking great, easy to access.
- 4/5
Good location. Big sports bar next door.
- 4/5
The rooms were clean. The hotel itself is a little dated but good, in a good location. There are food options nearby. The bed is not firm its quite soft. There is no air conditioning as stated but the windows do open for fresh air.
- 5/5
It was friendly, comfortable, and quiet
- 5/5
room is clean but small. good location on union square. limited amenities.
- 5/5
Parking was expensive. It is SF. It was nice that the Chancellor has a deal with the parking garrage to offer discounted rates. We left our car at the garage for two nights. The car was safe.
- 5/5
Great bathroom with deep bathtub and bath salt. I really enjoyed soaking my legs in hot water after a long day's walk. The staffs are friendly and quick to arrange late checkout, and the room was clean, coming with Netflix as a n option on TV. Will stay again.
- 5/5
Room always clean, staff friendly. Bartender Alicia always friendly and bar fun atmosphere
- 3/5
Staff good and room clean
- 5/5
Been staying here for an annual conference for almost a decade -- very consistent/reliable/comfortable with excellent service. Free daily coffee/cookies/fruit is a nice, reliable treat. Only real knock is that there's no dedicated AC (just ceiling fans and standing fans), but I've always been able to control the room temp reliably. Will be back next year!
- 5/5
The room was quite, and clean which is all I really needed. Keep in mind that the room is small, if room size is important to you, this may not be for you, I took the room with the two double beds. The bathroom had a small step to it. Overall it was great and the negatives are nitpicky.
- 5/5
Clean and nice area
- 3/5
Room was clean but small. Bathroom was cramped and very small. It gets hot in the room pretty quickly and takes a while to cool down, even with the window open. Hotel is very dated, the restaurant is not open and hasn't been since Covid. Staff is not very warm and friendly. This place is definitely not worth the price they are charging.
- 5/5
Nice and clean, walking distance to china town and many restaurants
- 5/5
Great location, friendly staff, 24 free coffee and cookies, water fountain and ice cold water in the lobby.
- 1/5
Nothing more to add
- 4/5
Great location on Union Square, many shops and eateries around - you really cannot go wrong with the location and the price. I love the biscuits and tea and coffee available downstairs. Rooms were clean for the most part, although upon check in, it seemed that my room was not in the best state - it was cleaner after being cleaned the next day. My only gripe was that the bathroom was slightly smelly - smelt of sewage, faintly, but it was there and noticeable walking into and being in bathroom. Other than that I had a lovely stay and would defo stay again if in San Fran.
- 5/5
We had a great stay at the Chancellor. The staff was very friendly. The location was amazing. We could jump on the cable car right out front. Sears Fine Foods was right next door for a Swedish pancake breakfast. We recommend staying here.
- 4/5
Room was clean, the refillable water station was a nice touch in the lobby. It was in the middle of the shopping and right next to the trolley. Staff was very pleasant and there was off site parking not far from the hotel. Property has an old 1910's vibe.
- 5/5
Overall, great experience. Good location for exploring the city.
- 5/5
The Chancellor Hotel exceeded my expectations. The only downside was the coffee machine. While you could select various coffee and espresso options, it wasn't great. I don't like my coffee sweet and even when selecting a plain cup of black coffee, the syrup from the other options was very present. This was a minor inconvenience. The location is fantastic. The Sears Fine Foods breakfast restaurant next door is a gem. The hotel is updated tastefully retaining the original charm. It's clean, the bed is super comfortable and the option to select your own pillows from their pillow menu is a great touch. The staff is friendly and attentive. I would absolutely stay here again.
- 5/5
Pretty good hotel for travel
- 5/5
Great property for the money.
- 2/5
Light between beds didn’t work. Shower malfunctioned , it only dribbled. Tv connection went on & off. Room was clean. Linens & towels were fresh
- 4/5
Good location very friendly staff old style hotel maintained well
- 5/5
Great central location. Staff were lovely and rooms while small had everything we needed. Beds and bedding very comfy!
- 5/5

- 5/5
Perfect
- 5/5
Very clean and quaint room. We only stayed one night but everything went smoothoffditevparking
- 5/5
Special thanks for letting us to store luggage.
- 5/5
Room spotless, staff friendly n helpful
- 4/5
We stay at this hotel every time we visit San Francisco. The staff and bartender are very friendly, rooms are always clean. The location is perfect for us and the price is excellent. The room could be a little bigger but we don’t spend much time there. Tons of good places to eat within walking distance and about a mile walk to the Ferry Building.
- 5/5
Super clean, great location, helpful staff
- 5/5
Staff goes above and beyond to ensure a clean and comfortable stay. This hotel is a vintage experience, so don't look for modern appointments and finishes, but do look for character and history.
- 5/5
Good!
- 4/5
We slept great! Staff was friendly. Front desk was helpful with suggestions for public transportation.
- 3/5
The rooms are small and the bathroom so small it is difficult to sit comfortably on the toilet as a normal sized adult. The elevators are very slow, and in the morning there is only a single coffee machine in lobby so expect a line and wait. The cleaning staff did a great job,and the front desk staff are friendly. Good central location, but an old hotel which is dates. The tv didn’t work for half of our one week stay, and was glitchy for the remainder. Limited channels. Poor views from room.
- 5/5
very clean
- 5/5
Clean room, perfect to stay in the downtown.
- 4/5
Yes, was clean, staff was nice. Good value for the money. Good location
- 5/5
The staff was amazing and felt their service went beyond expectations. The location was in a central area surrounded with great food and bars, not to mention in line of cable cars making transit easy!
- 5/5
Nice room. Grest staff. Excellent service. Great location
- 5/5
Excellent staff, spotless room, perfect location
- 2/5
Beds were too small.
- 5/5
Friendly staff. Nice location. Enjoyed the cookies and coffee bar
- 5/5
The best location to easily and quickly access the high end shops and boutiques! Pleasant staff enjoyed my stay!
- 5/5

- 5/5
Great location and good sized rooms
- 5/5
Great place to stay! We enjoyed the location, the cookies, and the pillow selection.

Charming atmosphere, nice staff, best happy hour, great coffee
- 5/5
Small, but comfortable rooms. Free coffee and cookies every morning. No AC, (windows open) but didn’t need it. SF is cool in Feb. Would definitely recommend.
- 4/5
Great location and very nice staff.
- 5/5
Great stay, clean and well appointed, they had space heaters, fan, ironing board, etc all in the room without asking. There was a big walk in closet which was great. Bed was really comfy. I loved that they had fresh popped popcorn in the lobby nightly and coffee 24/7 complementary- nice touch. Staff was friendly.

- 4/5
Friendly staff
- 5/5
great service
- 4/5
clean room, little bit noisy during night (its downtown, so its expected) and nice staff.
- 3/5
Housekeeping did fine job. Front desk
- 3/5
They do not give you water bottles.
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
Cute clean room. Staff were great. Chancellor hotel is in a good location. Would definitely stay here again!
- 4/5
The room was spacious and spotless. It appeared to have been recently updated. Staff was very friendly and helpful.the location was also perfect- right next ro ynion square and a short walking distance to theaters and museums. I had two issues during the stay. First, the ceiling fan was not working when i arrived. We let staff know and it was quickly resolved. Second, after returning from a concert, I discovered that the television was not working. The front desk sent someone to come up and fix it. Unfortunately, the housekeeping/maintenance man was unable to fix it. I was told that i would receive a small discount because of this issue, but when i checked out, the front desk had not been informed. It is unclear if I will receive this credit or not. Had the televison been functional i would have given 5 stars
- 5/5
Great staff, amazing location and comfortable room.
- 5/5
They accommodated us coming in early and leaving late and the beds were amazing. We didn't use the pillow service this time but we will next time!
- 2/5
Feel like you are traveling in time-
- 5/5
I think the lobby, though, needs more variation in color.
- 5/5
Room is clean. Staff is nice. The location is really great!
- 3/5
Hotel is funky but the staff is super friendly and the location and price were great
- 4/5
Nice room, exactly what we asked for. Service was great as always. Perfect location, great amenities
- 5/5
Very courteous, allowed me to check in early, clean room, very comfortable bed. In a good location.
- 5/5
The room was absolutely spotless and even smelled good when I arrived all the accommodations and the hospitality were great I will definitely be returning on my next trip to San Fran
- 4/5
I loved this stay! Extremely friendly staff and amazing rooms
- 5/5
Every time okay
- 5/5
The location is very good, and the hotel has been updated well!
- 5/5
The hotel building is very thin and tall; the staircases are interestingly very narrow and compact (fun way to exercise). Don’t worry—the elevators are great and right by the staircases. I got the top floor which gave a great view. There was also a cute rubber duck in the bathroom.
- 4/5
Room was left spotless every-time, however the hotel didn’t offer much amenities. Hard water showers
- 5/5
Clean room, comfortable bed and pillows. Across from Union Square and shopping and along cable car route.
- 5/5
Great room and perfect location.
- 5/5
The customer service and room were spectacular! This might be my go-to when traveling to SF.
- 4/5
Stayed here a number of times. Great location and continuous coffee and cookies in reception. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms clean but could do with some refurbishment as some of the bathroom fittings quite tired. Would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
Great location. Nice. Good staff.
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
Everything and everyone made the stay amazing
- 5/5
Old building but clean rooms. Well maintained.
- 5/5
Incredible
- 3/5
The mattress was too lumpy.
- 4/5
Clean room, bed comfortable, staff super friendly and helpful. Room is a bit warm but they have an electric fan. So when I cracked the window open and turned on the fan, the room cooled and was comfortable. Overall I had a good stay. Slept like a rock.
- 5/5
I loved my stay at the Chancellor Hotel. The location is great, and the room, bathroom, lobby, and hallways were all very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful—it almost started to feel like home.
- 5/5
Staff was courteous and helpful. Room is clean and well-appointed.
- 4/5
Old fashioned hotel but location is very good. Staff is very helpful. Totally price/performance hotel. Beds were good. Pillow menu was also so good
- 4/5
Clean rooms and very convenient location
- 3/5
Thin walls will have you thinking someone is in your room - can hear entire conversations and probably hear a pin drop from the other room. Good for quick trips if you plan on exploring the city but if you’re not an explorer and want to lounge around the hotel, go elsewhere.
- 5/5
Fantastic....kindest hotel and such a comfortable stay!
- 5/5
Lovely hotel with lots of its original character, plus modern amenities. I love the extra touches like the nice espresso machine always available, the fancy water bottle filling machine. Plus flavored water, cookies, popcorn, and fruit in the lobby all the time! Room felt clean and safe, though as a woman traveling alone, I wish there were a chain on the door alongside the deadbolt. The mini fridge was bigger and colder than ones I’ve had in similarly priced hotels. My room had a huge walk-in closet! Walgreens down the block, fun shopping around the corner, great food at a classic restaurant next door, nice staff—next time I’m in San Francisco I’ll definitely be back!
- 5/5
The hotel is exceptionally charming - small and old but very clean with lots of great benefits. Small bar in lobby with an AMAZING bartender. She was very personable with everyone in there and gave us great advice and recommendations on where to eat and what to see. Very comfortable stay and felt completely safe.
- 5/5
Room was very clean and hotel had a water bottle filler in the lobby which was very convenient. Staff was incredibly friendly and made an effort to make our anniversary special. The hotel also had a great view and was conveniently located to everything.
- 5/5
The room was clean, bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was quite large.
- 5/5
Excellent staff, the room was spotless.
- 5/5
Great location love the historical feel
- 5/5
Loved this quiet and sweet hotel!
- 5/5
Nice historic boutique hotel - the free teas/coffees and snacks available in the foyer was a real bonus. Really good stay.
- 4/5
Excellent location. Plenty of restaurants near by.
- 5/5
I feel like this is what are the real hotel service. Old building, looks outdated style but it has everything I needed. I have stayed at 5different hotels for this trips including Marriott and Venetian resort and so on. But regarding the price, I think Chancellor is one of the best hotel experiences.
- 4/5
It would’ve been better if I’d have my own coffee machine and there was a lot of noise coming from the room next-door on three nights. But other than that, it was a nice place.
- 5/5
The hotel is clean, the rooms are cozy, and the hotel staff is very friendly. They have coffee all day, and water and cookies in the evening. They have a bar where the bartender makes some really good margaritas. Honestly, it was a lovely stay, and I hope to return. Thank you!
- 5/5
Staff, close to all my go places in the city. Very impressed with your new Mayor! My favorite city
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Very clean and quiet. A plus hotel.
- 5/5
Love this place !
- 5/5
The room was comfortable in size. One of the better hotel compared to some better known chain hotel. Complimentary coffee/tea, cookies and fruit available 24 hours is very much appreciated.
- 5/5
Loved this place great customer service and the room was amazing.
- 5/5
Excellent front service
- 4/5
Nice clean rooms. The bellhops were very helpful. Nice lication. I wish it was easier to control the temperature.
- 5/5
Everything was Great
- 5/5
The staff was super nice and professional, room was clean and free stuffs ( coffee, cookies) were always welcome
- 5/5
Nice historical hotel right off Union Square. Staff was pleasant, rooms were comfortable and spotlessly
- 5/5
Very clean
- 5/5
Room was comfortable and clean. Lobby staff were friendly
- 5/5
Location, ease of check in, great staff
- 2/5
There was a constant high pitch sound throughout the night that would stop for an hour or so and then start again. Also, I could hear noisy neighbors.
- 5/5
Nice friendly and clean
- 5/5
The staff were wonderful, the room was perfect and it is in a great neighborhood. We will stay there again soon.
- 4/5
Staff was lovely, location great. Showers difficult for anyone over 5ft tall
- 5/5
great room. I didn't stay in it too much. as to why it worked out for myself
- 4/5
The room is small but ok. Location is very good.
- 5/5
Great location, super comfy beds and parking near by
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Clean room, helpful staff and great location to explore de city.
- 5/5
Excellent service, clean and invitimg rooms. We will stay again!
- 5/5
Excellent service and comfort.
- 5/5
It was the price, the simple old euro design, the historical essence, boutique charm, the doorman ( like an old time movie…so sweet the sights) 🎦 and location that made our stay just right for that night going to broadway sf.
- 5/5
The location was fantastic and staff was very helpful and friendly!
- 5/5
The service was really great!! And the place is comfy, the room is clean!! Highly recommended.
- 5/5
Great place to stay in the coty
- 5/5
The rooms are clean and cozy with a nice bathtub of soaking. They even include some nice touches like bath salts and a little rubber duck with the Chancellor Hotel contact info to take home. This was our third time staying here and we always enjoy it.
- 5/5
Perfect location, the cutest lobby bar with great bartenders, rubber ducks!
- 5/5
We went to a concert at the Moscone Center and stayed at The Chancellor for a night. Great walking distance from the venue (15 minute walk). Really close to diners, foods shopping. Pretty busy area so it can get noisy. Union square after all. The room was clean and charming. Loved how the hotel was old school looking. Got a double bed room. It was a tight fit but good for spending the night. There was a walk-in closet which was interesting. Plenty of space for luggage in there. Overall good stay. I would come back.
- 5/5
Everything was perfect, perfectly located, stocked with all the basic necessities and courteous staff everywhere. Bed was very comfortable 10/10.
- 5/5
The room was clean anr it came with everything you'll need in your stay (except for toothpaste, which was fine). The staff were very polite and approachable. There's even free coffee and lemon water at the lobby, perfect for refreshments. They'd clean the room even when you don't request. Most importantly, they offer free luggage storage!
- 4/5
Only one person available at check in and a large group was checking in - it took 12-15 minutes to get checked in. Good location, nice amenities (free coffee, popcorn, fruit, cookies), rooms were updated.
- 3/5
Staff were not courteous. There was a lady she was always annoyed. Not helpful to basic tourist questions. Bed was not comfortable. Sank in. There is no coffee machine in room
- 5/5
We really enjoyed our stay, the room and the bathroom were very clean and smelled delightful. The staff were very friendly and polite. We loved the vintage feel of the hotel and felt very comfortable. We will be returning next spring to attend a San Francisco Giants game and we will be staying at the Chancellor Hotel!
- 5/5
Really nice staff, decor
- 5/5
Conveniently located
- 3/5
Breakfast was more of a continental then buffet. Question the value.
- 5/5
Very comfortable to stay, nice room decor, and they have free Netflix!
- 5/5
Excellent location. The rooms are super clean. It’s a really cute boutique style hotel. We really enjoyed our stay.
- 5/5
Great Place to stay… Ghosts
- 5/5
Compact, well-equipped room half a block from Union Square and an easy walk to Chinatown and Nob Hill. Cable cars pass in front of the hotel. Very kind and dedicated staff, a bar, and a nice coffee/tea service throughout the day made this a friendly and fun place to stay!
- 5/5
Saturday night staff are awesome!! Room was clean and perfect for what we needed!
- 5/5
Small but spotless room in a quiet part of the hotel. Staff and housekeeping were excellent. Location is steps from Union Square
- 4/5
this is a perfect location and a great value
- 5/5
Clean room, courteous staff, good coffee
- 5/5
Wonderful location and staff.
- 5/5
We had a great experience at the Chancellor hotel! Booked the room last minute at a great price - staff was very nice, room was small but clean, bathroom was a good size, and love that they have a water refill station in the lobby. Would stay again!
- 4/5
Room was clean and bathroom was spotless
- 5/5
All good
- 5/5
The specialty coffee machine and complimentary cookies were greatly appreciated too! Thanks for a super getaway!
- 5/5
Clean cozy room. Water dispenser, bookies, premium coffee maker in the lobby, quality linens.
- 5/5
The older hotel’s renovation is very nice. My room was spotless I will be staying here again.
- 5/5
Surprisingly good for the low cost of this hotel.
- 5/5
All good so far!
- 1/5
When we reported this issue to the front desk in the morning, the response was completely dismissive. All we received was a brief “sorry.” When I asked if any form of compensation or assistance (such as airport transport) could be offered given the sleepless night, we were told no, and that we should have gone downstairs at 4am to change rooms. This is utterly unreasonable. Guests should not be expected to go down to the front desk in the middle of the night due to a malfunctioning facility that is not their fault. A hotel should take responsibility for maintenance issues and handle them with more care and accountability. Very disappointed with both the stay and the lack of customer service. I would not recommend this hotel if you value rest or reasonable treatment from staff.
- 5/5
Clean Friendly
- 5/5
Clean, efficient and well located for sight seeing. Best downtown deal around
- 5/5
Overall excellent hospitality. I found my new favorite place to stay whenever I visit San Francisco!
- 5/5
Cute lobby, clean and tidy, polite staff!
- 5/5
This is the cutest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms were clean. The hotel staff was amazing. They were all seriously so nice. I can’t wait to come back and stay here again. Also the rooms have walk in closets!
- 5/5
Cute bar. Excellent Negroni. Friendly bar tender.
- 5/5
Excellent staff. Everyone friendly. Thanks everyone 🙂
- 5/5
Lovely old hotel, we had a great stay. The staff were very helpful.
- 5/5
It was a quiet, pleasant stay
- 5/5
Room was clean, bed was comfortable and view was amazing!
- 4/5
Staff courteous & helpful
- 5/5
nice place with attention to details.
- 5/5
Convenient- Center - Needs some improvement on their Costumer Service Staff - Very Rude that makes me felt very uncomfortable at Checked in and at my checked out. No smile and having a nasty look on their face.
- 5/5
EVERYTHING WAS GREAT! Highly recommend.
- 5/5
This is such a lovely hotel. Definitely will be staying there any time I'm in San Francisco. I saw some reviews that the rooms were small, but for one person they are more than ample. The closet was bigger than the one I have at home. :0) Everything a person could want is near the hotel, including stepping out the door and being 50 feet from Union Square.
- 4/5
Clean room. Great comfortable beds. Great location. Friendly staff
- 5/5
Cozy, clean, upscale and great location. Staff was always pleasant.
- 5/5
All good.
- 5/5
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Hotel was decorated so beautifully for Christmas, very welcoming, beautiful view from our room.
- 5/5
Nice older hotel. Clean. Nice staff and great cookies.
- 5/5
The staff was unparalleled! Courteous and helpful in every way. Room was small but immaculate. Loved the “pillow menu”. Can’t beat the location and the complimentary coffee and cookies fueled us for a day of activities. Will definitely stay again!
- 4/5
The room was spacious and although looking over the cable car was quiet. Nice amenities in the bathroom and also candies in the room as well. The hotel has that old room vibe but I appreciated it. I was in/out for one night so didn't have the opportunity to experience other elements like the 2 for drinks at the bar but liked the free coffee in the morning
- 5/5
Excellent hotel, great Union Square location rooms are clean and courteous staff
- 5/5
Very clean.
- 4/5
The location was fantastic for us... easy to get to the BART, Trolley cars, etc. Was an easy walk to China Town and several other areas we wanted to see. Staff was nice if we engaged them but didn't really reach out to engage us.
- 5/5
Great hotel for the price i think beats every hotel around. I would definitely stay again everytime i need to be in SF
- 5/5
Great service, perfect location and friendly staff
- 5/5
Excellent staff. Very clean. Great location!
- 5/5
Clean throughout, friendly staff and very accommodating
- 5/5
huge bathtub, very comfy beds, nice customer service, and lots of little amenities. I would definitely stay again or recommend.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, clean room, quiet hotel, old (1914) and charming. Cool bartender. Good popcorn, coffee, cookies, and water.
- 5/5
It is a clean and confortable, historic hotel. Rooms are spacious and quiet even though the powell street cable car goes right by. It is an easy walk to union square, china town, and even the embarcadero. I have stayed in lots of places around union square and this is consistently one of my favorites.
- 5/5
Staff were very friendly and nice! Very good room service
- 5/5
Friendly and helpful staff; coffee at all times of the day (so great!). Clean rooms and quiet. Great location and terrific for business travel.
- 5/5
Great location for the price and hotel that keeps updating itself
- 4/5
The room was clean, pleasant and quiet. It’s an old hotel with high ceilings and quaint old touches. There was complimentary lemon ice water, tea, apples and cookies in the lobby—much appreciated! While the Chancellor is centrally located and close to public transportation, I didn’t enjoy the neighborhood at night.
- 5/5
Amazing staff and impeccable customer service
- 5/5
Amenities
- 5/5
Very good
- 5/5
Excellent service
- 5/5
Best location, friendly staff, had a wonderful time stayed!
- 5/5
Friendly staff, great location, clean room
- 5/5
Perfect location. Hotel with european feel. Lovely and clean room. A bit warm in the rooms and bed a bit too soft for our liking. Bar not open on sunday and monday. Helpfull staff. Hope to visit again.
- 5/5
Clean room, amazing staff who were very friendly and helpful, loved the location.
- 4/5
I liked how friendly Alicia was behind the bar! So helpful and insightful! Staff are helpful and approachable consistently
- 5/5
Rooms were clean and staff was kind
- 5/5
I loved my stay there for 5 days. The room was comfortable and the area around the hotel with shopping and people was great. I will definitely come back to visit San Francisco and stay at this hotel.
- 4/5
Comfy bed, very quiet considering its right in Union Square, delicious coffee.
- 5/5
I love this hotel and it seems to upgrade itself every time I stay there.
- 3/5
Alittle better
- 4/5
An older hotel, but very clean. Small room but a walk in wardrobe helped to give space to store baggage. Great location, friendly and helpful staff. The free tea/coffee and cookies were a nice touch
- 5/5
It was very clean and quiet. Excellent location just 1/2 block from union square and the train.
- 4/5
The room was very clean, and the staff was very helpful.
- 5/5
I really enjoyed my stay here at the chancellor, the staff was lovely and the vibe of the place was chic and very welcoming
- 5/5
Excellent hotel! Courteous, kind staff, perfect location, very clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Front desk people were Great... Great place to stay.. All around Great experience with this Hotel. Bell Hop service Guys were great. Coffee and Cookies were Nice.
- 2/5
They put loud people in the room next to mine
- 2/5
Was not told there would be very loud construction (tile chiseling, wood and tile breaking, etc) during our stay.
- 4/5
The staff was amazing. Very kind and helpful. The room was clean and the location was right in the middle of everything. I’ll definitely be coming back.
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
It to get to, very close to where I needed to go, clean and safe. Very close to Macy's too 😆
- 3/5
Room and lobby outdated.
- 2/5
Ok
- 5/5
I had a wonderful stay at The Chancellor Hotel. From my first interaction with Daniel at the front dest, the bellman helping me with our luggage, and cocktails at the bar with our fabulous bartender, Alicia. The room was clean and comfortable and the property was convenient to everything we chose to do. I highly recommend this outstanding hotel. (See my photos for the only things I pilfered.) 😀 I should also add the the parking is very close to the hotel and it’s a safe and secure garage.
- 3/5
The room wasn’t thrilling, but it did the trick. The front desk staff was dismissive and did nothing to go beyond the bare minimum. It’s a great central location and you can get a direct view of union square through the fire escape, but
- 4/5
Everyone was great! The bartender rocked!!
- 4/5
Beds comfy. TV dish did not connect, but we could login to our personal Netflix account. Would go back, as it’s central, there is no restaurant but breakfast available at Sears next door.
- 5/5
This is a charming, old-fashioned hotel in a perfect location. My room had a view of the Union Square Christmas lights. It is not slick or modern: think of it as European and you will see its charms. The room was comfortable with everything you need. They warn you in advance that there's no air conditioning but most of the time in SF you don't need it, and there's a ceiling fan and the windows can be opened. There is always coffee and cookies available in the lobby and the tiny bar was popular, thanks to a two-for-one coupon for guests. The neighborhood seems to be making a comeback after some rough years. It was a lot cleaner than I remembered, and I went to two great restaurants that were new to the area.
- 4/5
Yes
- 5/5
Clean room, great location, tremendous value, great employees. It feels like a family-run operation, not some big corporate feeling. I judge hotels also how they handle problems and my room was not receiving very strong Wifi so they gave me some options, had me check wifi coverage near a room being cleaned and let me move to that room and wifi was very fast. I was there 4 nights and I am very satisfied.
- 5/5
Linda on the front desk was very kind and understandable. Great location in the heart of San Francisco.
- 5/5
Clean cosy room, helpful staff
- 5/5
Classic hotel for a great price.
- 5/5
This is a great spot for the price - beds are comfortable, it’s very conveniently located and the room was quiet and clean
- 5/5
Clean room and great staff.
- 5/5
Room was clean, well appointed and a convenient location.
- 5/5
Great experience overall for a 100 year old property
- 5/5
The room was nice with a great view and access of downtown with little extra amenities that made it comfortable and it was very, very clean. we would highly recommend staying at this little jewel in downtown San Fran and will come back.
- 4/5
Very nice but no coffee in room and tiny toilet.
- 5/5
The hotel was more amazing that I could have imagined. Don’t let the age of the building fool you! Clean, comfortable and the best, most knowledgeable staff! I will definitely be back! Thank you for a great stay Chancellor!
- 5/5
The room was spotless and the staff was very couteous
- 4/5
Staff was great!! Room was very clean. Bathroom was a bit small but overall a cute hotel.
- 4/5
Better to remodel bathroom
- 3/5
Noisy room during the night
- 4/5
Great Place.
- 4/5
Charming boutique hotel, I enjoyed the architecture. So close to union Square and streetcar. Gracious bellboys
- 5/5
I've stayed at the Chancellor several times - it has never disappointed. Great rooms/beds/pillows! Perfect location and access to everywhere!
- 4/5
Basic, small rooms. Good location.
- 3/5
La habitación que me dieron se escuchaba mucho ruido del ascensor, la cama no era nada cómoda y el baño tenía muchos problemas de humedad y era realmente pequeño he incomodo y las toallas no olían bien
- 4/5
Clean room, nice staff, good location
- 5/5
Staff was amazing and quick to respond and help. Bar ran out of certain brands but was able to as accommodate with others.
- 5/5
The room was very clean, courteous staff. Alicia the bartender was amazing!!!
- 5/5
What a great stay! Staff was wonderful, cozy rooms with everything you would need. It’s just down the road from Union Square! Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Very friendly and helpful staff, lovely spotless room with unexpected amenities. A true old school gem in the heart of Union Square.
- 5/5
The beds were super comfortable like clouds. The staff were super courteous and overall just great. The hotel had history and charm. Good location. oh yeah, and good cookies.
- 1/5
I have been a paying guest at this hotel on multiple occasions and have spent a significant amount of money there. However, during this visit I felt unwelcome, as if the staff did not want to provide me service. Earlier, I was told by staff that there were no rooms available because the hotel was fully booked. To verify, a friend of mine attempted to make a reservation online and was immediately able to book a room under his name. I paid for that room with my own card. When I later approached the desk to inquire about the rate, the reaction from staff showed clear surprise and discomfort. At that point I felt I was being treated differently based on my appearance, particularly after my tattoos were visible. From that moment, the attitude toward me seemed judgmental and biased, as though I did not belong there. This experience was unprofessional and inconsistent with basic customer service standards. I recommend that the staff be retrained on how to interact with guests respectfully and without prejudice.
- 5/5
Clean
- 4/5
Great location … friendly staff… would stay again
- 5/5
Fabulous location and staff very helpful
- 5/5
Staff were excellent, gave early check in!
- 4/5
All in all I would 100% stay here again!
- 4/5
Clean room
- 5/5
Great location, great additional services, free coffee, happy hour etc, and lovely room
- 5/5
Good vibes
- 5/5
Great location. Great bed. Clean riom
- 5/5
Helpful staff, fun rubber ducks! The magnetic pillows ( optional) were very interesting to try.
- 5/5
A small boutique hotel that feels very European. Staff was friendly and professional, room was small but clean and nice and it is in a really convenient area.
- 5/5
My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at the Chancellor - the building has a lovely heritage feel, with very pleasant staff, and considerate details. Free coffee, fresh cookies and complimentary popcorn in the lobby. As well there is a small bar with reasonable prices. The room was comfortable and the bathtub amazing. Plus it's very close to all a tourist might want to experience in San Francisco. We'll stay there again for sure.
- 5/5
Consistent service
- 5/5
Great staff.
- 5/5
A nice room with a deep tub.
- 5/5
The staff were super friendly! And the amenities are unmatched. I’ve stayed at 5 star restaurants around the world, but this place has amenities I actually want!
- 4/5
Everything was great
- 5/5
Nice friendly staff, location perfect
- 5/5
Solid stay for just a night or two. Older property, no frills but good location on Powell, staff great and room itself clean and quiet. Bed and pillows really good. Will use again for short stays without need for lots of hotel services.
- 5/5
The room was clean . There was nothing to complain about.
- 5/5
It is located just in front of the giant Macy's store in Union Square, and safe and concenient for local dining and walking around. I would stay again.
- 4/5
Coffee not available in the morning was a bummer. Will go back though.
- 3/5
The building is kind of shabby, with lots of scuffs, cracks, chipped paint, smells old in hallways, etc. Even the rug in the entryway needs help. The Internet wasn't adequate for the work I needed to get done. But the location is convenient, the room was clean, staff was good, and it was lower priced than most of the places I'd want to stay in SF. The thing that threw me was actually the reviews on Expedia, which called it amazing.
- 3/5
Hotel is very close to shopping area and union square. Water pressure was too low for showering. No water on the day we checked out. Which was on the Friday morning.
- 5/5
Amazing staff and walkable to many sights.
- 5/5
I cannot fault the Chancellor Hotel. Whilst it may not be the fanciest, it is clean with a very convenient location and is excellent value for money. Staff are helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay there again
- 4/5
Well located, smack-dab in the middle of town, with fairly easy access to transportation throughout the city.
- 5/5
The whole package is just great.
- 5/5
I stayed at this gem in the heart of downtown San Fran as part of my birthday trip on the West Coast. Everything was excellent about my stay here from the cleanliness, the beautiful historic decor, convenience and closeness to restaurants/attractions. If I'm ever in the area, I'm definitely coming back!
- 4/5
It was nice although small.
- 4/5
The room was clean. Coffee, tea, cookies available 24/7. Great location.

I love my stay there, it’s just across the Union Square, super convenient to go around and explore the city
- 4/5
The room was very tidy and cozy. Internet was very reliable. They offer coffee and cookies and apples in the lobby 24/7. The bar has a happy hour that seems quite reasonable. There are very good restaurants within a reasonable walk, some of them classic, old school San Francisco restaurants, in business 50 or 100 years.
- 5/5
The staff was attentive. The lobby is comfortable and welcoming. The room was clean. The beds were super comfortable. The price was reasonable with no extras added on.
- 5/5
The staff met our every need
- 5/5
Clean room and good staff.

We had a great time. We like to book this hotel when we can as it is convenient to a lot of places. The staff was very friendly, the lobby was calming (and it had great cookies and coffee), and the room was wonderful.
- 4/5
Staff was fine. They should have never assigned me a room facing powell street, moving to another room @ 10pm was a big nuisance for me!!!
- 5/5
We had a great stay! Definitely recommend.
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
The location was very good and staffs were all kind. They provide coffee, cookie and apple for free. The only negative point is that the room’s not soundproofed well.
- 5/5
Nice older hotel in an active shopping area. I would definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
Great stay! We found this place last year when our usual hotel was full, and it’s become a favorite. Clean, convenient, and comfortable even without AC — the ceiling fan worked great in October. Loved the free cookies, popcorn, water and coffee! There are some friendly staffs too. Just wish they’d update the elevator. Will definitely stay again next year!

This is a dependable hotel with competent, loyal staff. I shall return.
- 4/5
Historic building, tight spacing.
- 5/5
Great Location!!, clean rooms.
- 5/5
The room was clean and adequate for our needs - small, but fine. Location was close to shops. Friendly, helpful staff. Cute boutique hotel!
- 5/5
Lovely, cozy room with a good soaking bathtub. Next door is Sears Restaurant, a San Francisco treasure with delicious and well-priced food. Cable car in front, BART a few blocks down and buses galore. Have Clipper Card to explore.

Great place
- 5/5
This was a lovely property offering all the amenities one could want.
- 4/5
Right on the cablecar line (for better or worse).
- 5/5
A good hotel, not too expensive and situated in the heart of downtown.
- 4/5
The hotel offers some nice amenities in the lobby: a filtered water dispenser for filling your own bottles for the day, free popcorn at night, cookies in the morning, and coffee. No in-room coffee, but they make up for it with Torani syrups, including sugar-free, plus all the standard sweeteners, AND three different cream options. The pillow menu is delightful! The walk-in closet allowed us to tuck away everything, so the room wasn't cluttered with our belongings. I would definitely stay here again. Cons: The beds are very soft - not in a bad way - I found mine to be very comfortable! The problem is that there is obviously a preferred sleeping side, and they need to turn or flip the mattresses. We slept diagonally and solved the problem. A minor issue was that the blackout curtains had dropped a hook, so it was difficult to shut them. I notified staff of these issues upon our departure. All in all, a lovely stay at a historical SF hotel.
- 5/5
Very nice hotel and the staff is amazing good location to be in the middle of SF!!!!

Area was great
- 4/5
I’m only knocking off one star because our bed was like sleeping on a marshmallow. Way to squishy for my or my wife’s liking. Everything else was on point at the hotel. If I could request a firmer mattress I would definitely stay there again.

A 16 story but small hotel, only about 10 rooms per floor. It is old but kept up. It is reasonably priced. The room was an adequate size with a large walk in closet. The beds and pillows are comfortable. The only public facility in the building appears to be a small bar, but they make up for it with numerous freebies: coffee, fruit, candy and excellent cookies. It is very close to Union Square, and a cable car line is right in front. There is also all kinds of public transportation nearby. So are many huge hotels, new and old. It is therefore crowded but there are also a lot of restaurants and stores right there. You could probably pay a lot more without getting anything better.
- 5/5
Very in the center of everything. The pillows were the BEST. Wish I could have taken then with me! There's filtered and lemon water and cookies in the lobby.
- 5/5
Felt very quaint not big business. You were recognized as a patron!
- 5/5
Awesome experience! Great staff, excellent location and retro rooms. We’ve already booked our next stay.
- 5/5
Stayed for 3 nights and The staff here was amazing and accommodating. The rooms were great size and gave a nice feel to the city and nostalgia. Many places to eat and a good walking distance.
- 4/5
The property is small but clean. The room and bathroom are petite. Large closet space. No AC so the room got stuffy. Thankfully they gave you a fan but it really wasn’t enough. The bed is okay not great. Convenient location . Walgreens close by for essentials.
- 5/5
Darryl took great care of us at check-in, resolved a slight issue with professionalism and grace. Definitely will keep staying here.
- 4/5
Comfortable room - although noisy neighbours. Helpful staff. Great location.
- 5/5
Great location and coffee, cookies, and dedicated staff
- 5/5
Heart of San Francisco! Clean and very comfortable!! I highly recommend this hotel! 👍👍
- 4/5
Very good position , covenince and closed everything., but not good and feeling unsafety in the evening, especially after 8pm.
- 4/5
Staff were friendly and helpful. Hotel is right near the cable car pick up and a short walk to either Union Square or Chinatown. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, and the area was centrally located to several things we wanted to see in San Francisco. Nice stay!
- 5/5
Historic and charming hotel, in a fantastic location right near Union Square, on the trolley line.
- 4/5
I loved all the little extras that were provided. From candies to cookies to free water refills. It is the little things....
- 4/5
Very nice hotel with great staff. They. provide you with coffee, tea. Cookies and fresh apples free.
- 5/5
The staff at the Chancellor were super friendly! Our room was always clean after we’d come back after a day of adventure. Housekeeping made it special for our daughter by keeping her stuffed toys safe as well. I would definitely recommend the Chancellor to friends and family based on the staffs friendliness and how convenient the hotel was for everything we wanted to do. Walking distance was perfect for the cable car, the cable car even stopped right outside our hotel. Perfect location and great hotel if you love the historic building vibes. Would definitely come back!

Cleaning staff is efficient and nice. Desk staff is not performant.

Good price for the location. Iced Water on first floor is tasty

Great!

We enjoyed our stay here. They have delicious cookies and coffee throughout the day. I forgot my son’s stuffed animal and when I emailed them, they immediately replied and mailed it to us. That meant a lot to us. Thank you.

We are regular/returning guests. Hotel front desk staff accommodtated our early check-in request. Hottel is just across Union Square ( Powell and Post ) 5-minutes walk to Powell station. 10- minute walk to Chinatown gate.
- 4/5
Liked the proximity to the Union Square.
- 5/5
Really friendly and helpful staff. Like the little bar inside. Bed super comfy, and they offer a wide selection of pillows :). Fantastic location. Parking garage right up the street. Elevator was a nice extra feature. Would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel, but homeless in that area are just scary. drug addicts are everywhere. Problem is not specific to the hotel, but to a downtown area generally
- 3/5
My room on the 2nd floor has no view. There is a small bathroom with a deep tub. There’s a rubber ducky in the bathroom to keep! There is no coffee service in the room but there is coffee and tea available in the lobby 24/7, as well as a water refill station. There is no a/c unit in the room but there is a charming ceiling fan. There is also a portable fan and portable heater stowed in the closet in case of uncomfortable temperature. The bed! The bed is extremely comfortable and I had a good night’s sleep. The bath towels are nice and thick. The bath amenities are subtly scented which I like. The staff all around is one of the friendliest in the industry, from check-in to check-out. The friendly bartender Rory accommodated my late arrival for a nightcap. The location can’t be neat, central to everything.

Good
- 5/5
The staff were very friendly and the location is central to so many attractions.
- 5/5
This is a great place to stay. Walk to many restraunts and bars. Hotel is historic so small rooms also no air conditioning. But it was not a problem. Charming hotel. Highly recomended.
- 5/5
Without hesitation the front desk let us check in early. The hotel were great and very welcoming during our entire stay. Right down the street from union square it was close to everything and super convenient. Definitely staying here on our next trip!

Checked in: Sept. 18, 2025. Checked out: Sept. 21, 2025. Strike 1: bad start at check-in. I emailed numerous times prior to arriving to request an early check in because our flight arrived 10 am. Emphasis on REQUEST because I know being in the travel industry myslef, it is not always available. I even offered to pay. No. Isis, the front desk agent at the time of my check in said room will be available at 4 p.m. Okay, strike one. Strike 2: curtains in room 1504 have holes. And the bathtub handle bar came loose. No body lotion. Had to run to Walgreens next door to get supplies. Strike 3: We requested late check out. We were given till 1:30 p.m. to check out. We did a tour in the morning, hand lunch in Chinatown, and came back to the hotel at 1 p.m. Well, guess what? When we got back to 15th floor, elevator door open, housekeeping lady was sitting outside the elevator door and said, "I've been waiting for you. Where did you go? I need to go home" I replied we were given until 1:30 pm to check out. She replied, I will wait for you. My partner and I were both stunned by her comment, so we had to hurry packing up and left the room in less than 20 minutes, leaving no tip for her. If I knew then what I know now, we would not have stayed in this hotel. Redeeming factor: bottle of "champagne" upon arrival to celebrate our anniversary. And yes, can't beat the location.
- 4/5
The location of the property and staff service are extremely good. However, the rooms are really small and the hotel doesn't offer much in the room.
- 5/5
We had a one night stay at the Chancellor hotel. The staff were friendly and efficient. The room was clean and tidy. There is no AC in the room but it didn’t bother us in late September. We came here mainly for a concert at the Masonic and it is close to the hotel. The area around the hotel seems safe. We walked around to the Chinatown, little Italy and pier 39-all walkable. Definitely recommend this hotel!

Hotel ok, conveniently located. Lack of facilities that were advertised on Expedia website. Expedia advertised it with a restaurant, didn’t have one. Bar closed 2 of 3 days we were there. Coffee in foyer not available all mornings with decaf only available 1 of 3 days.
