Reviews
The Casa Loma hotel receives mixed reviews, with guests appreciating its convenient location, cleanliness, and friendly staff. However, the lack of an elevator, small room size, and noise from the street are common complaints.

The location is superb, and it’s a nice neighborhood. The hotel itself is nice and clean. It’s one of the smallest hotel rooms I’ve stayed in so far, but it has everything one would need (shower, mini bar, microwave), so I can’t complain. Honestly, I really expected worse, but I was pleasantly surprised. The only thing that I didn’t like was that it can be noisy. I stayed in the room facing inward, and, truth be told, if your window is cracked open, you can hear everything. Also, there's no elevator, but I was lucky not to have heavy bags. Even without bags, getting to the fourth floor gets old really quickly.

Great location to get around by mass transit .

The rooms were comfortable and the location was fantastic to take the bus to the old town and to take the ferry. We stayed one night but the staff made our trip special by suggesting restaurants. I liked everything.

Staff was friendly and helpful. The room had a basic TV, fridge and microwave. I wish they had an iron in the room. Not a 5 star hotel, but you can't beat the price for the location. I would stay here again

The room smelled deeply of bleach when we arrived and there were fingernail clippings in the carpet along the walls. The room was really small and awkward, very basic and minimal. Parking was extremely limited.

Was a very pleasant stay. Thank you very much. Would definitely stay again.

There are NOaminities. No vending machines or anyway to get a soda; no ice available. When I asked about bottled water, which I was willing to pay for, I was told to use tap water. But even if I drank tap water which I don’t, there were no cups or glasses to get the faucet water. There was an empty vitamin water bottle under one of the twin beds. The beds were about 12 inches apart. It’s a good thing it was just my daughter but I would not recommend this place to ANYONE. We stayed only one night because the hotel was a total dump! I am surprised that Expedia has this as one of your facilities. There is no way I believe any of those reviews. I would like a refund. I only stayed one night. Angel M Garcia MD

Clean room bright big windows, all around very good value and location, good coffee in the morning and the staff are very helpful and amenable .

It was walkable distance to many many fun bars, restaurants, arcades and sights that need to be seen. It was an older building but had a good San Fran vibe. The only thing I wish the hotel had was access to drinking water to fill up water bottles and such.

A clean comfortable room, good beds, fridge and in a lovely location near fun eating places in a characterful neighbourhood. Staff were helpful and friendly. There didn’t seem to be any hot water later in the day, though it was fine in the morning. The windows don’t stay open unless they’re propped. But these are small things. We had a good stay and I would come again.

Good location for sure, price was what we were looking for. Bathroom was nicely modernized though small. Morning clerk was nice enough. The size and layout of the room, there was no storage to speak of and only bedside and outlets on one side. There's no a/c, sleeping with the window open increased the noise and got us sick. Check in clerk was unfriendly. We were on the top floor and did not realize it was a walkup.

The room was VERY CLEAN but also very small. Minimal staff interaction and none (nobody at desk) upon checkout. Excellent price but no elevator and 4 floors. Great convenience of holding luggage. Walls deemed thin - i could hear someone snoring but area was very quiet. No individual room heat or a/c control but window does open. Overall great clean budget friendly place to stay if all you need is clean and safe with nice size shower and water pressure. Linens were all clean, soft and relatively new - i will be back.

I thought I was prepared after reading the reviews. It was small and noisy but I could deal with that for the price. What the reviews didn't prepare me for was how completely awful the beds are. The mattresses are so old and worn out I couldn't sleep. Ended up leaving and booking another hotel for the last night of my trip just so I could get some rest.

Overall it’s average. Shower pressure was really low and it took a while to get hot water. Our room was next to the busy street and heard so much traffic noise. Sink was too small to wash face.

A few more things to note: -This hotel is along busy Fell Street, so bring earplugs if you are a sensitive sleeper. -There is no elevator, so be prepared to walk up a few flights of stairs.

Great location, nice staff, everything you need if all you need is a place to sleep and shower! The price is amazing compared to other hotels in the area and it’s so conveniently located. The room felt a bit dingy and musty, but I’d consider it a more upscale hostel. It had everything I needed at the end of the day!

Great location and all the amenities we needed. We were sightseeing and out and about, so this hotel was perfect for that. Only downsides were that we were on the 3rd floor and it was quite warm while we visited. The hotel has no AC and we were unable to open our windows. It got quite warm in the room so we wouldn't spend much time in there. That being said, everyone who worked there was kind and helpful and I would definitely stay again.
- 4/5
Bring your own soap! They don't have any hand or bar soap in the bathroom.
- 4/5
The location is good and away from any hustle and bustle, the staff are extremely friendly and nice. The fact that the room is extremely strong, located on the third floor with no elevator, so it was a bit tiring to carry on my suitcases up and down, but it was a good legs work out at the end. I mean I would preferred if there was a note on Booking stating that room might be on higher floors and hotel has bo elevator, cuz I have just had an operation in my knee, and I had to carefully watch my steps especially when I am carrying my suitcases.
- 3/5
The hotel was had a very attractive price, and a great location, and was clean. However, it was in rough shape with the window being unable to stay open, even though it was hot in the room

The price and the accommodations were satisfying to me. No frills, bells, and whistles, just a nice bed and clean bathrooms, all I need for a good sleep.I will stay there again soon!
- 4/5
The price was very reasonable, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean room and a nice shower, with only occasional noise from neighbors. Check-in was a bit odd, when I bounced off a locked front door late afternoon, and was about to walk away when I saw a young guy come up to let me in. I would certainly stay here again.
- 4/5
My room wasn't that spacious but it was clean and quiet. I liked the hotel and the decor was pleasing. The bathroom was updated and quite well staffed with supplies. I have one detraction. My floor was on the 3rd floor. There is no elevator nor air conditioning. Not even a ceiling fan. This lack of being able to waft the air was a major deficiency. A 3rd-floor walk-up with no a.c.???!
- 5/5
Great location. Staff was very nice. Parking is less than ideal, but that's the trade off for the location. Bathroom looked like it was recently redone and very clean. Only wish there had been a fan or something in the room to move the air. We had the windows open, but the night traffic never stops so it's was pretty loud.
- 5/5
Not bad for the price, but the insulation is terrible—you can hear every car on the street.
- 3/5
The hotel is in a nice location and it is a good price, however, there is a big difference in the rooms you could be given. A single queen room can vary from a very small room with no closet, no place to set your suitcase, and a tiny bathroom and only a view of another building very close, to a comfortable room with a table and chairs, a little closet and a corner view. Booking through Expedia you could get either of these rooms for the same price. The room I was given the first night was so small and depressing I asked to change. I was given another room, but this one was on the third floor so you have to be aware that you have to carry your luggage up three flights of stairs. I would thus be very clear on which room I would accept before booking in the future.
- 4/5
Location, very clean
- 3/5
Another big issue is the noise. The sound insulation is very poor, and you can clearly hear what’s happening in other rooms. Someone upstairs was constantly moving furniture around midnight and even 1 a.m., which made it very difficult to sleep. The hotel also doesn’t have its own parking, which is a big downside. The closest parking garage is about a 12-minute walk away. The room itself is extremely small. The windows are very old and don’t block outside noise at all — it feels almost like they’re open. Because of that, it also gets cold at night since cold air comes through. The bathroom sink is unbelievably tiny. It’s almost impossible to wash your face because there isn’t enough space for your hands and face under the faucet. Water constantly splashes onto the floor, so I had to keep a towel there to absorb it. The shower pressure was also very weak. Another odd detail: the room has a refrigerator and microwave, but there is no table or place to sit and eat, so it seems like you’re expected to eat on the bed. The only real positive is the location — it’s very close to the Painted Ladies, about a two-minute walk. I also want to thank the housekeeping staff: they changed the towels daily, emptied the trash, and overall the room itself was reasonably clean.

Excellent central location. It is very clean and is exactly as pictured. Th value for the price is very good. My only small suggestion is to add a fan of some kind because the interior rooms get quite warm.
- 3.5/5
The coffee machine in the lobby was great! I also liked the location a lot! The shower wasn’t that clean and the sheets were stained and had hairs :(. It also didn’t feel like there was a lot of privacy and you could hear neighbors tv.

Needed a quick place to stay last minute. It’s okay for what it’s worth. Walls are very thin and you can hear your neighbors and especially the street noises. Beds were worn down and sheets had mysterious stains on them. Place smelled fresh with bleach when I arrived. Key card were weird and didn’t work half of the time. Led me to a situation where I was locked outside of the building at night because neither of my cards worked. No elevator. The free coffee machine in the lobby was a nice touch.

Both windows to the room were broken. Not the glass they just weren’t installed how they were supposed to be so wind and noise was coming in very loudly. It sounded like I was outside with the cars. The room itself was clean. The lady that checked us in was so quiet I had to ask her to repeat what she said and she rolled her eyes then repeated it just as quietly as the first time. I was not a happy camper

This is a barebones hotel. Room with a queen size bed is small and only fit for a solo traveler — it has a small fridge, microwave and bathroom, which has the smallest sink I’ve ever seen (no countertop space so water often gets on the floor but at least there’s a small rack to store toiletries). There’s also a small nightstand by the bed and small clothing rack. It would’ve been nice to have a full size mirror and a desk. Walls are thin and there are times I can faintly hear voices from nearby rooms, but overall it’s a mostly quiet place to stay and the area itself is near a convenient bus line.

For the price, I understand you get what you pay for. I give it 3 stars mostly for the location and the appearance of the newly updated bathroom. Parking is very slim. Air flow and ventilation inside the room was terrible. Walls are paper thin. You can LITTERALLY hear a pin drop. Can feel a little sketchy, especially at night. box spring and mattress appeared to have dark brown stains all over them...don't expect much this hotel. I will not be staying here again.

For the price this place is pretty unbeatable. The staff is great and it's pretty quiet both within the hotel and you don't really hear a lot of the outside noise. The room itself is pretty barebones, but it does have everything you need - bed, bathroom, and even a fridge and microwave. The rooms are small but they're definitely adequate. Between the super kind staff, the quietness, and it being clean I really can't imagine anything better at the price.

Please don’t put guests right next to other guests if the hotels isn’t full. To say the walls are paper thin really doesn’t do

Small hotel room with no amenities. I had to book on a massive shortage due to the salesforce Dreamforce conference and a desire not to stay 45 minutes outside of the city or have my company pay $1,200/night. The worst part is there is no sound proofing between the rooms. I could literally hear other guest’s snoring, coughing, and talking in the rooms next to me. There’s no AC, so you have to open the window to the loud street to get any airflow. Very cheap, bare bones hotel but I’m glad I got to stay 20 minutes from the Moscone center.

I’ve staid in the Casa Loma a few times over the years while visiting family in SF. The rooms are small but definitely not claustrophobic, most importantly they’re clean and well stocked with towels, soap, etc. The surrounding neighborhood is beyond charming. Plenty of markets, take out, and laundromats on the same street to keep you supplied and comfortable if you’re staying for a long weekend or a few days. Just a wonderful experience every time I’ve visited.

Stayed here for a couple days while in San Fran. Overall, my experience was okay. The hotel is older and not updated. I was not aware that there wasn’t an elevator so carrying my suitcase 3 flights of stairs was unexpected. No AC in the rooms and even if you open the windows it doesn’t help. The walls are very thin and conversation from other rooms can be heard. Lots of noise at night making it hard to sleep. Other than that, for the price it was a decent stay.

My sleeping area had a queensize bed with my very comfortable medium hard mattress and clean bedsheets and pillows. Flat screen tv worked well. A vintage classic touch with decorative sconces. Before i stayed in a room that had window blinds with nice moulding surrounding it. These brought back memories of my grandparents home back in the day.

The rooms are so loud, if you have a room that is facing the street you can hear everything. You get your moneys worth.

We had an interior room. No noise from the roads, but it was tiny! There's just enough room to walk around the bed, and no place to put your stuff in the room or bathroom. Room was clean and shower was hot with good pressure. The interior hallways are run down but clean. Location was just great, I felt very safe in this neighborhood as a female with my teenage daughter and walking around by myself in the mornings. You can hear some noise from other guests but not bad at all considering the price and neighborood are worth it.

Just no air conditioner but if windows are opened, it works, good for small stays or sleep overs after tiring day.

Ideal for the budget traveler: in a safe part of town with no frills. No elevator and the rooms are quite Spartan—fridge, microwave, TV, shower & toilet, but no chair or desk. Muni bus access to all parts of town and a 15 minute walk to the opera, symphony, Asian Art Museum, and City Hall. In a residential neighborhood with a couple of late night convenience stores. Staff and fellow guests are friendly gathered around the (free) coffee machine in the mornings.

I never write bad reviews but this really was shocking. Truly the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The room was tiny with only fluorescent lighting and incredibly dirty. The shower was full of hair, there was a blinding light from the hallway through the window making sleep impossible, there were no proper pillow (head went right through to the mattress) and the mattress has physical springs that dig into your back. The last time I woke up with a backache like this was from sleeping on a floor during a college party. I asked for help in covering up the window as the light was so strong even with the blinds closed and new pillows. The receptionist was kind and accommodating but ultimately, the problems with the room were unsolvable. Loud conversations in the surrounding rooms with paper thin walls made the morning an equal nightmare. I could understand paying $30 max for a room Iike this but due to minimal hotel availability this week in SF, I paid $212. So gross and exploitative.

It was relatively quiet, for being in the city. The reading lamp on the wall next to the bed was loose and flopped to one side when my wife tried to use it. Also, the clothes hanger fixture was coming off the wall on the end away from the corner of the room, so we only hung a couple things next to the corner wall. No trash can in the bathroom.

I'm not sure there's a better low-option budget in San Francisco. The hotel is clean and well-maintained. Just be aware there is no AC, and my room got pretty buggy despite mild temps. I'd definitely stay again, but maybe bring in a window fan. Location is unbeatable, staff is incredible.

The Hotel was Old. The good thing it was close to where we needed to be my son said it reminded him of the shining. There were holes in the walls and gaps under the doors. The carpet was old and smelly and there was hair all over the pillows on the bed.
- 5/5
Great location, perfect for last minute stays clean just be sure to bring a fan or put a wet towel in the fridge for the night and white noise to drown out the neighbors.
- 4/5
The internet was weak. The window sash was broken making the window difficult to open and the room was too hot with it closed. Everything else was fine for the price.

Great location.

Great location and price!

Room had hair on the comforter under the sheets. The garbage had not been emptied from the previous guest. There was a hair tie on the bathroom doo. The windows were plastic and let drafts through. The heater was a space heater. The pictures on line she are polished versions. Took a shower because I had been in plans or airports for 12 hours and left never to return. Wasn’t going to let that place ruin my weekend. Oh ya pillows were for throw pillows covers.
- 4/5
This hotel is in a great location and I will return in the future. I will however chose a different room type. The very, very small room with the interior view is the smallest room that I have ever rented. Also, the rooms all have their windows open and are right by each other. You can hear every word in the other rooms. I was a solo traveler, so the lack of room wasn’t terrible. I would spend a bit more for a room facing the street and I think the rooms with twin beds has the most room. Coffee in the lobby was nice. There would be no place for a coffee maker in the room! Location for public transportation is great!!
- 5/5
would stay again and love the area

Great for an affordable option in San Francisco. Staff was wonderful.
- 5/5
Hotel Staff was insanely friendly and allowed us to check in to our room early. Rooms are a little small but overall the quality of the stay was truly charming. Walls are a little thin but the staff and hotels charm more than made up for it!

Nice
- 5/5
Super quiet hotel in a nice part of the city. I especially appreciated the easy access to public transportation, local shops and laundry facilities nearby. I was in town for a family event and the hotel was perfect for my visit.
- 1/5
On website fake photos of rooms they charged me 100 dollars just to change the room which have window that has outside veiw to get freshh air in room because there is no air conditioner if you just need bed to sleep then you can go for it
- 3/5
The room however.... Gash in the carpet. A towel jammed in the window, I guess to stop a draft? Small bathroom. The shower was fine, but you have no place to put things on the sink. Where the toilet was, the wall sort of indents, so even not tall me had to do a little side saddle.
- 5/5
the perfect no frills hotel! staff was super nice and even let me check in early because a room was ready. definitely recommend for an affordable stay in the city!

Old building, but very clean and great service from the attendant at the front.

The property is the 3rd time we stay. Quiet place and close to USF where my daughter was studying college. I will recommend to any one that wants quit place easy to walk around. The people very friendly.

Staff was able to store my luggage for me for the day, which was extremely appreciated, and the bathrooms were newly renovated. Other than that, the dirtiest hotel I've seen in a while, I slept above the stained pillows and sheets with my own blankets. Windows were broken and no ac, it was about 1000 degrees in April, refrigerator didn't work
- 2/5
The room is about 3' bigger than the bed. You could dry yourself quicker with a paper towel than with what they have hanging in the bathroom. It was Clean(ish)! but the room was under construction. Finish the dang room before you rent it to someone! That's just silly...
- 4/5
Great service very competent staff great price and location
- 1/5
Really wanted to like this place. It’s in an ideal location, so I would have come back every time I came to visit, but the girl checking me in on the afternoon of 4/5 was so rude. I couldn’t figure out how to get into the building since I hadn’t checked in and the front door was locked. I could see she was in there and was just staring at me and finally I realized there was a button to push. She literally rolled her eyes at me as I came in and got verbally angry at me because I had accidentally pressed it twice. She was so rude the entire time I saw her- my key ended up not working on the front door so she got mad when she had to make me a new one and tossed the new one at me. Honestly kind of crazy behavior for someone working front desk at a hotel.
- 4/5
Overall, the stay was solid and came with unbeatable prices—definitely one of the best deals in town. The only drawback was the loud construction happening inside the hotel, which made it tough to relax at times. That said, if you’re okay with a little noise and want to stretch your dollar, this spot delivers huge value. If quiet is a priority, it might be worth paying a bit more elsewhere—but for the price, it’s hard to beat.
- 5/5
Weloming and Friendly staff. Clean. Safe. 2nd time. Hot water in shower. Good coffee. Going back.
- 2/5
Room was WAY smaller than photo, also had holes in the walls (rat issue). Smelled like sewage, trash strewn right under the window. Very thin walls. Plastic on the hallway floors. Folks were smoking pot in the room nextdoors too.
- 4/5
Many of the rooms are being renovated right now so there were construction sounds present.
- 5/5
Great location, always friendly and helpful family owned and operated. Small but everything needed is there and clean. Many stairs to climb but i like the excercise. Warning: there is never any parking in the vicinity so you might spend an hour driving around but that has nothing to do with the Casa Loma :) Prices are great and predictable.
- 5/5
Great little hotel for a quick stay. The room was small but clean and even had a microwave and minifridge. It is an older building, but that doesn't bother us at all. The lady who checked us in was amazing and exceedingly helpful. We would definitely stay again!
- 4/5
The hotel was very nice. The property was very welcome and the staff was very.
- 2/5
Nice people, inferior hotel
- 5/5
Front desk very friendly

kind stuffs
- 4/5
The hotel is good considering the price, the room was overlooking Fell street and very noisy. Had to have tv on the alleviate the noise while sleeping.
- 2/5
My key card failed everyday it was demagnetized, very frustrating. This can be a nice hotel it's in the Fillmore close to the Haight. I did like the free hot chocolate (coffee) machine.
- 1/5
It is one of the worst hotels I stayed at.

- 4/5
My room was tiny but cute. Bathroom looked to have been fairly recently updated. There was a lot of construction going on staring early in the morning on the floor I was on. With that keeping things vacuumed and neat would be difficult and it is an old building. I would stay again at the price compared to the big name hotels. Convenient for my purposes, easy walk to Alamo Square and a nice park.
- 1/5
Terrible. Stay away
- 2/5
You can clearly hear the amplified sound of footsteps from upstairs, as if they are stomping directly on your head. When the neighbors open their door, it sounds like someone is opening the door to my room, and it startles me every single time.
- 5/5
The staff was very nice.
- 3/5
The place is good for one o two nights only ithe noise from outside u can hear
- 5/5
For the price in that area it is a good deal. Bare minimum bit friendly staff
- 5/5
Good value for the price. Not a lot of space and no view to speak of, but way, WAY less expensive than anything else near music venues and other stuff in the Haight. Clean, nice staff, pretty quiet. Perfect for an overnight stay to go to a local concert. Definitely worth getting the private room with own bathroom.
- 3/5
VERY noisy room just feet from busy road… never again!
- 4/5
Easy check in, simple and comfortable room, affordable and central. I would stay here again.
- 2/5
Old property, no elevator, there wasn’t staff for real, in the morning a man to clean and another person downstairs which you barely see.
- 1/5
The mattress was extremely poor quality and was set on a frame that was too large for it. Our bed kept sinking down to the floor and we were not able to sleep.
- 5/5
Very convinient location with friendly staff
- 4/5
Nice people
- 5/5
Great little place to stay - it’s basic , clean , & affordable ( it ain’t the Ritz Carlton) in a great neighborhood and on public transportation. Highly recommended
- 3/5
Great location friendly service, this place kinda feels like staying at a hostel but with a private room instead of just a bed. The walls are a little bit thin so not the place for a light sleeper. Bathrooms are shared but there was a private sink in room.
- 5/5
Incredible location and comfortable stay - amazing for the price! Very friendly helpful staff. This is our new go to hotel when we travel to SF!
- 3/5
The room we stayed in was clean but could have been improved by adding a small table and having a sturdy shelf in the restroom. The location is convenient, and the price was reasonable.
- 5/5
Excellent value for the price, note there is no elevator. Lovely staff, allowed early check in at no additional cost. 24 hour, secure entry. Worth noting that there is a bit of noise and you can sometimes hear occupants in the next room.
- 5/5
Wonderful location, great, clean location!! Friendly staff. I’ve done 4 trips here now and find it to be best place to stay.
- 5/5
Cozy rooms but with all the amenities (mini fridge and microwave and small seating area) for a great price. Our room had a private bathroom that was recently updated. Becaware no elevator but great location close to stores and restaurants in the lower haight just three blocks. Great access to public transit or a inexpensive lyft to downtown. No breakfast but fee coffe machine in the morning. Great value for a very expensive city!
- 5/5
In a very convenient location! Staff were very welcoming and would come again!
- 5/5
Always love staying here when I’m SF. It a no frills hotel, which is perfect for my needs.
- 5/5
- 5/5
I really enjoyed me stay!
- 5/5
Great hotel for a good price in a nice and safe neighborhood
- 5/5
The hotel is in a safe quiet neighborhood close to Alamo square, the popular painted ladies. You can't beat the value of what you're getting in san francisco in a,safe neighborhood. Their are some negative reviews on this hotel . They have a option for a 4 star hotel , but at a much higher price. The owner is there at the hotel, so you have someone who cares .
- 4/5
Nice, quiet, and not so busy location. Had all the resources, including a nearby laundromat
- 4/5
Nice place
- 4/5
I didn't think about being up several floors with no elevator. The building is old but well maintained The staff was friendly and helpful. The coffee machine that made various coffee beverages automatically was a nice surprise. Good value overall for the price and area.
- 3/5
Needs a serious overhaul. Actually they were planning to but canceled. I have stayed here before. Great walking to Alamo Park and painted ladies. Great Portland vibe area down the hill on Hayes. Easy walk to Market then Castro. The 22 bus makes great connections to light rail. Could do better on the vaccuming as well but the carpets do need to go.
- 4/5
The only drawbacks are minor: no ice machine, no a/c in the room, and the vehicle traffic outside does keep you up at night. But the manager gave me a fan after the first night to help block out the street noise, which really helped. About a 20 minute walk from the Civic Center BART station. Helps if you can bring your own water and soda as no vending on site and the market down the street is pretty pricey.
- 5/5
Very much an older property, so don't be expecting the world. But, service was excellent and friendly, and the location is my favourite area on that side of the Bay,
- 3/5
not great if you don't like stairs
- 4/5
we arrived after midnight and had no problem with the check in. staff very friendly. cleaned room.
- 2/5
Share bathrooms and toilets were not clean. The room we stayed was dirty so are the communal arias. Had to ask to put toilet paper after waiting day and a half. Very disappointing, I did not enjoyed my holidays
- 5/5
A 20 minute walk to Haight Street, Tim's Liquor store across the street, and one block from Alamo Square, where we lounged for hours, surrounded by picturesque views and great people. This is our new home away from home.
- 5/5
I constantly go to the city for work and this is the go-to place I stay at. They remember you and are so kind about it. They have this at-home family feel that you just can't find anywhere else, especially for it being a hotel in the city.
- 3/5
There was no ac or even a fan to circulate air in the room. Tried to open the window to get some cool air to come in, and window almost fell out. Just suffered for seven days.
