The hotel is in a convenient location with friendly staff and clean rooms, but some guests have reported issues with the size of the rooms, water pressure, and hidden fees. There are also mixed reviews about the comfort of the beds and the quality of the WiFi.

Mi hijo Jorge esposa e hijo se hospedaron, me informaron que todo estuvo muy bien en hotel Sofia,

Was in town for a convention at the Convention Center which was only about a 1/2 mile / 10-15 minute walk away. Chipotle across the street was a lifesaver. Near the Balboa Theater if you’re in town to see a play/ show. Lots of restaurants in the Gaslight District. Petco Park next to Convention Center. Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Room very clean. Bed comfortable. Short bus ride for $2.50 to the airport should you choose to bypass Uber or a taxi. Only gripe I had was the TV in the room didn’t work properly and I needed maintenance to fix it each night. Otherwise, no complaints.
- 5/5
Excellent service and front desk. Helpful with restaurant suggestions and other information. Room was fantastic. Very nice, quiet and spacious. Well located. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
The hotel is beautiful and our room was very comfortable. The front desk staff was helpful and courteous. We enjoyed our stay.
- 3/5
Although clean, the room was the smallest we’ve ever stayed in, to the point that the sink was in the room not the bathroom. Very nice rain shower, but water didn’t drain properly the first day - it was fixed after notifying the front desk. View out the window was a wall several feet away. Air conditioning unit was loud and rattled all night, and the bed was hard and uncomfortable. Parking was $50 per night, but that appeared to be par for the downtown area.
- 5/5
Great stay.
- 5/5
Helpful staff, and well maintained amenities. I would encourage people to stay here.
- 5/5
Property was clean and the staff were very helpful.
- 3/5
Very decent hotel. Clean rooms and very convenient location. My only issue was the attitude of one of the front desk employees. Otherwise, it all went fine.
- 3/5
I stayed for two nights and was initially assigned a room on the fourth floor. The elevator felt old and dimly lit, and the hallways had a noticeable lingering smoke odor, the kind that seems permanently embedded from years when smoking was permitted. The room itself was quite cramped. One of the first things I noticed was that the TV had no signal. When I called the front desk, they offered to send maintenance. During that conversation, I learned that only rooms on the seventh floor had streaming capabilities, and even then, only Netflix was available. Fortunately, the staff member kindly moved me to a room on the seventh floor. The difference was significant. The seventh floor was brighter, felt better maintained, and provided a much better overall impression of the property. While the second room was still small, it was more comfortable and acceptable for a short stay. Despite the excellent service, the condition of parts of the hotel and the small rooms left me disappointed. I appreciated the efforts of the staff, but I would not choose to stay here again.
- 5/5
Good hotel overall, convenient location, helpful pleasant stuff.
- 3/5
Everything is clean, location is great. However, I think the hotel is too dark inside, rooms are very dark, even hard to see inside the closet when you are looking for clothes, even though all lights were tuned on. Also, the cleaning would always forget to replace a towel or completely forget to leave some soap on the sink for us. When I called them they promptly responded and sent us the supplies.
- 5/5
They made check in and check out speedy and they also were extremely nice when i ordered food to the hotel and called my room to pick it up
- 4/5
While staying here, I was impressed with nearly everything The Sofia had to offer from the gorgeous rooms, the hotels view, helpful staff, and even complementary goodies in the lobby. I will say I was not a fan of having learning that you must pay to park here as it’s not included in your reservation. I also felt the property lacked more amenities for its guests like a hot tub or even a sort of breakfast voucher for their new restaurant downstairs. Overall, me and my plus one had a fantastic opportunity to stay here. 7.5/10
- 4/5
We had trouble with our tv. Scott came up and fixed them. There really no dining in the area and no quick store to pick up some snacks.
- 4/5
The only Cons: * The air conditioner had a mind of its own. It would cut off and on and change the temp setting all the time. Kinda annoying but I got a fan from the front desk when I went to tell them about it and they came up with it within 10mins. One night I was frozen and the next it wouldn't stay on. * The shower didn't drain correctly the 1st 3 times I used it so I was standing in water but it never collected enough to run over. * The walls are thin so if you have loud talking neighbors you will hear them. luckily the loud people next to me were only there my 1st night and weren't up past 12am. Overall it was a great and I will definitely stay there again if I have the chance. So if you are thinking about booking here do it!! Call ahead of time to ask about the deposit details!
- 5/5
We really enjoyed this old landmark hotel in San Diego. Nicely located to the theatre and other places. I would recommend it if you like older hotels with character. Rooms are on the smaller side but still nice and worth the money.
- 5/5
The staff was great and inviting! The room was really nice. We'll be back!
- 5/5
Rooms were very clean, I was surprised that room was cleaned daily, since COVID hotels no longer clean the room while the stay unless you request it. Very friendly staff
- 5/5
Amazing historic property, highly recommended.
- 4/5
Not bad for a single night.
- 2/5
The hotel is a beautiful old hotel. The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. The problem I had was the first room they put me in was right next to the elevators. The elevator doors were very squeeky, and they kept me up all night every time they opened and closed. I complained and they moved my room. The next room they put me in had a faulty coffee maker. The toilet also didn't flush. Those two issues were solved on day two of my 3 night stay. However, I came back from the convention center after work on day two, and my room was not cleaned. I came back at 3pm. I did complain and the manager offered to move me to a suite for my last night, but I refused as I didn't want to pack and unpack again, just for one night. She said she would give me her card for an upgrade on my next stay but she never gave me the card.
- 4/5
The staff were very nice and helpful. We had a 2 double bed room in this historic hotel which was very unique and neat to be in, but also meant very small room. We struggled for space. Finally put one suitcase on the desk and one under the desk with some chair negotiating. The a/c was loud and didn’t work the first night, but they quickly took care of that while we were out. Thankfully it was too hot of a day that day.
- 5/5
Great place!
- 5/5
Staff answered all questions with great levels of knowledge. Had a minor issue with our toilet & maintenance was at the door less than 30 mins later. Would love to come back for my next visit!
- 5/5
Hotel was great! I loved the historical feel of the building and it’s in a good location!
- 4/5
Nice hotel just small rooms
- 1/5
Do not stay here! Loud, lots of traffic, loud hotel guest, you will not sleep. Reviews and photos look much better than the actual!
- 5/5
The hotel is very well located.
- 5/5
Wonderful boutique hotel in a great location walkable to many sites and restaurants. Staff was friendly and helpful and rooms were clean. Nescafé coffee makers in the room were a nice touch!
- 5/5
👍
- 5/5
We were upgraded to a newly remodeled room on the seventh floor, which turned out to be a suite we loved it so much we decided to stay another night
- 3/5
It is definitely an older building, a little dark but the room was clean. Walkable to a lot of cool areas. Close to the ocean but also close to little Italy and gaslamp. Starbucks downstairs which was convenient.
- 4/5
Stayed on a business trip beginning of June. Great location, walking distance to little Italy, Gaslamp District and waterfront with many dining options. Staff was polite and helpful. There is a small gym at the hotel but there are options close by. The property is an old, historic building that is maintained well. If you are a light sleeper you might find the location a bit noisy early in the morning but I was ok with that. Overall good experience.
- 5/5
Nice cozy hotel with easy access to pretty much all you need. Uber / Lyft available if you don’t want to walk. Valet is also an option, with addl. parking if valet not preferred. The room was clean and perfect for solo traveling!
- 3/5
clean room
- 5/5
Parking was $40/day and behind the hotel
- 5/5
It's a nice hotel. The fan blows all night and is kinda loud but it's fine.
- 3/5
The main issue is the high level of the additional property fees charged at exit, which are increasing the overall bill by over 20%. The hotel does not have swimming pool.
- 4/5
Hotel was clean and staff was helpful. Perfect location for seeing attractions nearby.
- 5/5
Everyone was great, beautiful hotel. Easy to walk to gaslamp. Will be staying here next time!
- 5/5
This hotel offered an exceptional stay defined by immaculate cleanliness and modern, upscale comfort.
- 5/5
amazing location! older hotel so rooms were stuffy and smaller but perfect if you’re not spending a lot of time there
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel great location and very friendly staff
- 5/5
friendly staff!
- 4/5
This is a member of Historic Hotels of America. The exterior fire escapes testify to its age, but the interiors have been nicely updated. The bath is nice, the Nespresso works. Flavored wter on offer in the lobby. The rooms are not large but efficiently laid out. Although there is a restaurant on site, our late arrival coincided with a decision to close early, so we went to bed with only a cup of coffee and some cheetos. Although several websites indicated there was an airport shuttle, a call to confirm this revealed it was not true. BUT there is a city bus from the airport (not the easiest to locate) that stops just across the street. The location allows walking to the waterfront, Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter, and even the baseball stadium. Overall we were pleased with this hotel.
- 5/5
The staff was amazing the place is beautiful. Our room was a little small but I heard there's bigger ones and even more beautiful.I loved Specialty coffee maker in our room. Comfy beds, pillows and bedding. Close to lots of things to go see on foot. Would definitely recommend and stay again.
- 5/5
Great value for the price, the staff were wonderfully, and the room service was very good. The space itself has a lovely, cozy atmosphere that made it feel like a home away from home. I'll absolutely be returning!
- 5/5
Great!
- 5/5
Awesome place super unique!
- 3/5
I stayed here many years ago and it has fallen from grace for sure. They used to have a lovely little restaurant which is now gone. The rooms feel like they’re in disrepair, the carpets, the walls, the furniture, the paint the tiles everything just feels so shabby and old. I would not stay here again.
- 5/5
Staff were great. Maintaince went out of his way to get us a machine that would provide hot water for our tea. Loved the juices.
- 5/5
Good sork
- 3/5
It seemed like this was a known problem, yet it was never mentioned or addressed during our stay. Additionally, the room lacked a main overhead light, so the only lighting came from a few wall lamps, making the room feel quite dark. Parking was another frustration. At $40 per night, I expected a more convenient experience, but parking was extremely limited and often difficult to find. Overall, while the hotel had some positives, the lack of attention to guest concerns, poor communication, and additional parking expense made the stay feel less enjoyable than expected.

Todo
- 2/5
The bright spot of this hotel is the new restaurant, Truva. Mark, Kevin and Tommy were excellent and we had some wonderful drinks! They were welcoming and friendly, unlike their hotel counterparts. The decor is beautiful and the food was delicious!
- 5/5
The location is also excellent for exploring the rest of San Diego, with an easy drive to both La Jolla and the Pacific beaches. Overall, it was a very convenient and comfortable place to stay, and I would definitely stay here again.
- 3/5
The hotel had peeling paint, tiny elevators that creaked and reeked of smoke, and a sink not attached to the bathroom, and there was no light actually in the bathroom - which we just felt was strange. All 3 times we went to the valet stand, no one was there, despite a call down beforehand. The room was small but nice, clean and had a decent sized shower. The staff was kind, and the hotel is in a nice quiet and walkable location.
- 5/5
Super convenient super nice staff. Will be going back here for any future SD stays.
- 3/5
Extremely small rooms
- 2/5
Room was dirty. Hair in the shower. Roof was leaking in my shower. I could bet money there was black mold due to the leakage of the roof above the shower. Would not recommend.
- 4/5
Overall, our experience staying at the Sophia wasn’t bad at all. The night we got there there was a little issue with the sliding door in the bathroom getting stuck and not being able to open, the staff made their way to our room and at least helped to get it unstuck. I like the proximity to a lot of the fun stuff downtown San Diego. I would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Location
- 5/5
Great staff, wonderful ambiance. Close to dining options. Great value fir your money.
- 1/5
Don't believe the pictures. The room is a lot smaller than it seems. A LOT SMALLER. Never again
- 3/5
The front desk wasn’t really friendly
- 5/5
Very close to everything, unfortunately not as many facilities as would be expected for a hotel that costs so much. In fairness it is a nice historic building well located. The $75 per night deposit was a bit of a surprise and I don’t believe it is mentioned beforehand. I would stay there again however not for more than a few days.
- 5/5
Hotel is close to everything downtown and a lot quieter than the gaslamp
- 5/5
It was a cool hotel, lots of history
- 5/5
Great location Pick, the corner queen room
- 5/5
👍
- 5/5
Superb location with very nice rooms. I've read some reviews stating that rooms trend on the small side, and that's probably true; but if you're spending
- 5/5
Great location! Rooms were very nice.
- 5/5
Good nice good place!
- 4/5
Hotel is really nice, located in a good part of downtown. Public transit stops are nearby. I would say my only down is our fridge didn’t work. Other than that our stay was great!
- 5/5
Good location easy to find restaurant and public transportation
- 5/5
Great stay!
- 4/5
Adequate, no view.
- 5/5
The location was great for walking around town and staff made the stay very pleasant.
- 1/5
The walls are extremely thin. I could hear everything going on in all the rooms around me and in the hallways. The paint on the room's walls was chipping. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls. The shower would flood while I was taking a showe and wouldn’t drain—also no shelving in the shower for you to put your personal body wash, razors, etc. The air conditioner didn’t seem to work unless I set it to 68°, and I didn’t really have control over whether it was hot or cold. It was just either on or off. The bed itself was hard and uncomfortable. After the first night there, I called the front desk and Expedia to let them know I was unhappy and wanted to leave, get a refund, and book somewhere else. They refused and denied my request. When I called to have the room cleaned, I came back, and it seemed like all they did was make the bed, because there was still trash on the floor. I do not recommend staying at this hotel for any reason possible! No matter what kind of deal you think you’re going to get, it is not worth it. Do not stay at this hotel. Also, I can tell you from experience, Expedia will be unable to help you get a refund or cancel the reservation. Even if you purchased insurance, you won't get a refund if you're unhappy. You will still not be able to leave a stay if you’re unhappy, so I don’t recommend booking through Expedia or purchasing insurance.
- 5/5
Will come back
- 5/5
Room was clean, Starbucks in our Hotel was awesome. Loved the walking distance to Gaslamp and the USS Midway👍👍
- 4/5
It was clean and just as advertised. Employees were kind and engaging with everyone.
- 2/5
Our first room had plumbing issues with the sink filling and refusing to drain and us later coming to find that the shower did the same. Maintenance is not available after a certain time so we were not able to be assisted with the problem that would have been easily addressed. We were moved to another room the following day, but that room had A/C issues with one unit cooling and the other blowing hot air into the sleeping quarter. Even with maintenance attempting to come and troubleshoot the issue (unsuccessfully) the room became very muggy due to the dichotomy in temperatures. The pillows in both rooms were absolutely horrendous. Lumpy, small, scarce and not what would be expected from a hotel whatsoever. If you have neck or spine issues: bring your own pillows because you will not find comfort in the ones they provide. The front desk staff was never overtly welcoming. However, I will note that the valet parking was very quick and helpful.
- 3/5
Rooms were tiny. The pictures did not match up to real life expectations. The shower drain, drain real slow causing a flood.
- 4/5
Temperature control was great once I dialed it in. I did not park on the premises.
- 1/5
Hidden fees: when we checked in we were charged extra fees that wasn’t in the booking details. VIP status: the receptionist didn’t give any of the perks of vip status I would never come back or recommend this to anyone
- 4/5
Expensive parking
- 5/5
Stayed here for the 40th anniversary top gun party on the uss midway. 0.5 miles from the ship. Great location. Everything top notch!
- 5/5
Were mindful of the gold vip status I had and let me know what was given for free upgrades, they give complimentary water bottles to refill in the hotel.
- 2/5
The room was way smaller than pictured, the sink is right when you walk in, no privacy to go bathroom, you can see the shadow if your partner is in the bathroom on the toilet from the bed, the room was missing the Iron, it was in a great location and many food locations, is good for a night but not for a few it wasn’t a relaxing spot
- 5/5
Great location, nice staff, clean rooms!
- 5/5
Room was spacious, clean and beds were comfortable. Hotel is adorable and well kept. Excellent location with a Starbucks right next to it. Would stay there again. 10++.
- 3/5
Room and bathroom very small. It looks like you are in a cruise
- 5/5
Loved it
- 4/5
We only stayed one night and had a pleasant stay. Just expect parking fees and destination fees which are pretty standard in the area. There's no way to avoid that. The staff was very courteous and helpful. The building is old but part of the charm. Others complain about the size of the rooms so I booked the larger suite which was a great idea. We had space to move around and a nice view of the city. We did not experience any loud noises and had a decent night sleep. The bar or restaurant was closed so I don't know how it is. There are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby. Perfect location for attending shows or just exploring the area. We feel it was in a safe part of downtown. I would stay here again and recommend it to others.
- 5/5
Better gym equipment would be great
- 4/5
Unfortunately the Restaurant, Lounge was closed while we were visiting..but opened the last morning we were leaving. Great breakfast. However, this Beautiful Historic Hotel is actually centrally located downtown within walking distance to both Little Italy area, The Piers on the bay and the Gaslight District so we managed to find good foid and fun

.
- 4/5
The bedroom was amazing, newly decorated, fresh and clean. Foyer dark and tired, carpet needs deep cleaning!
- 4/5
Beautiful historic building, great location. New dining option TRUVA which is accessible from the foyer is outstanding, food was genuinely incredible, fresh and soooo tasty, give Mel and her team a visit 7am-11pm (highly recommend the Avocado eggs) Foyer carpet needs deep clean, would benefit from some upgrades in foyer and bedroom.
- 5/5
Good location
- 4/5
Very good location , clean rooms.
- 4/5
Overall nice stay. The does need some updates. Can’t wait for the new restaurant to open.
- 5/5
Had to keep going back to the bathroom for hand soap. Staff member that check us in was amazing, so was the vallet man but person checking us out was ok did her job was not at all welcoming
- 3/5
You have to jump over drug addicts and hold your breath stepping out since the sidewalks smell off urine and b.o. It's more of a place to just take a shower and sleep.
- 3/5
Very helpful car valet attendant even though I didn’t use the car valet. Starbucks part of the building Very unfriendly and unhelpful receptionist. Very old, needs updating Car parking fees extortionate Value for fees
- 4.5/5
Liked the location, good proximity to downtown and the San Diego Convention Center. Loved the yoga and workout rooms. Room was a bit small including a small bathroom.

- 5/5
Staff was outstanding! Location was in a good, safe proximity to nightlife and the convention center.
- 1/5
Room key didn’t work. Staff couldn’t figure it out either. Had to wait 2 hours to get into my room late at night and couldn’t even leave the room until check out. Terrible hotel
- 4/5
Nice range of weights in the gym.
- 4/5
This is an Old Hotel in a Fantastic location. You can walk to the Bay and to Petco park easily. We had a King Studio which was Great for 5 nights. Compared to other downtown San Diego Hotels, rates are very reasonable, especially for a Studio. Many restaurants are with in easy walking distance. Hotel has a New Restaurant that just opened during our visit. However, we did not have the opportunity to try the restaurant. I would definitely recommend this Hotel.
- 4/5
The Sofia does what it needs to do and does it well. The room was clean, the staff was genuinely friendly, and the location is hard to beat — right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, walking distance from restaurants, and a city bus stop. That said, a couple of things worth knowing before you book: the carpets and hallways carry a musty smell that reminds you this is an older building. And my room had no operable window — sealed shut, no fresh air whatsoever. For some that won’t matter, but if you like to crack a window at night, this isn’t the place. Overall, good value for the location. Just go in with the right expectations and you’ll be happy.
- 5/5
Very very clean room
- 4.5/5
I liked the location. The trolley and buses were easily accessible. All the staff were very friendly. I would differently stay here again.

Friendly staff, specially Martha, she provided outstanding customer service. Best location, close to everything. Highly recommended
- 4/5
The parking situation is not preferable, and the cost could be much less.
- 5/5
TV did not work but we weren't there enough for it to be a problem. I would definitely stay there again.

We checked in Wednesday night, around 11:30pm. Once we arrived to the room, it was far more worn and rundown than the photos, but overall seemed relatively clean. It was warm & stuffy, so we decided to turn on the air. Almost immediately, both my throat and my wife's throat became extremely dry. We both started having minor coughs due to the air. Upon spotting the air vent, we definitely did not feel comfortable or safe breathing the gunk in the vent in. However, it was too stuffy and hot in the room without the air. Given this, we decided that it would be safer for my wife to recover at home, despite the construction. We checked out with the front desk attendant and left around 12:15AM, 45 minutes later. The next day, we realized that we were not checked out of the room. When we called to asked if we could be checked out, an employee name Ian informed us that he could not provide us with an email confirmation that we had checked out. My wife repeatedly asked for this, and Ian kept repeating that we had booked a non-refundable room & could not get our money back. We repeated that we just wanted a receipt that we checked out. We were told the night staff couldn't check people out. The room wasn't great, but the biggest issue was the customer service.
- 5/5
The property is a little worn down but overall a nice experience.
- 5/5
Great handy location, it was perfect for what we needed.
- 5/5
Very convenient location. A great value!
- 4/5
Self parking fee $40 Guest service fee $24.99
- 5/5
Good location and good room temperature controls
- 5/5
The Sophia was an awesome quaint hotel. It had all the amenities. Our room had a street view and in the distance you could see the beach. I wish we would’ve stayed more than one night. Definitely looking forward to staying here again. !
- 5/5
beautiful rooms and great location.
- 3/5
Very small room, and we did not get a queen bed like the listing was describing.
- 5/5
Staff was helpful, things were clean and labeled well so it was easy to use and find everything.
- 3/5
Perfect spot if you’re not looking for much, but just want to walk/ explore San Diego. Little Italy was a 20min walk, and like 10min from the pier. Loved how walkable the location was :)
- 4/5
Other than “texting the valet and the car will be ready”. That never worked, but everything else was good.

- 2/5
I reserved my rooms three months in advance, but they still placed our two rooms on separate floors. Unfortunately, the room I received was extremely dusty. The excuse given was that it might have been caused by the air conditioning, but there is no reason a room should be left that dusty for so long. The hand towels were old and dirty, and I took pictures showing how dusty the room was. There was dust on the lamps, on top of the coffee maker, on the drawer handles, and even in the restroom fan. It was horrible. I have severe allergies and asthma, so the room should have been properly cleaned before our arrival. The hotel is also far from the University of San Diego, and there were many homeless people around the area. Unfortunately, I will not stay here again.
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
It was an older hotel and it showed in places, but the staff were super friendly and the location was great.
- 5/5
This hotel is so well located. I can walk to the Gaslamp district, the Little Italy district and the Seaside village no problem. I highly recommend this hotel.
- 3/5
All but one front desk staff were not pleasant to deal with and do not prioritize guests.
- 5/5
Location was perfect.
- 4/5
The male manager on our check out date of 5/14/26 was very helpful and friendly. He happened to be at the front desk when we were checking out and was very pleasant. The lady who helped check us out was also very helpful. She assisted us with storing our luggage after the 11 AM check out time while we ate lunch at a restaurant next door. However, one of the front desk female staff was rude. When we came back in after our lunch to get our luggage, we asked to use the lobby restroom as we had already checked out and her tone was harsh as she told my husband that the restrooms are for guests only (which we were). Her colleague who checked us out was present and overheard the encounter and told her that we were guests and asked her to unlock the lobby restroom for us. She did this begrudgingly with a pout on her face. After she unlocked the men's restroom for my husband and the women's for me, we said thank you but she just walked off without saying anything with the same pout on her face. She may have been dealing with personal stuff that day but really she should have been friendlier and less rude.
- 3/5
I reserved a queen bed and got a single double bed with a parking lot view. They sent several emails about being a VIP member and how they would give us water and upgrade our room, none of which happened. Vallet parking was difficult because there was not enough room to pull up to do it. The room was super small. It was manageable for one night but that was it. The bed was hard as a rock and had the smallest pillows, no pillow top as advertised and the pillows seemed as though they were just pillow cases (square which was weird) with sheets shoved inside. Poor quality bedding.
- 5/5
Great location. Older hotel but I love vintage.
- 3/5
This was a clear example of a hotel that’s does the complete minimum- no honor bar, remote batteries low, closet size bathroom, no pool, no jacuzzi, no water or snack shop, or vending machines, valet missing for 30 minutes, no restaurants, so out the door for every meal. No amenities or negotiated deals for local exhibits- just No…
- 4/5
The bus from the airport to the hotel was great, 18 minutes and it drops you off right in front of the hotel. Staff was nice and always present.
- 5/5
Very quiet hotel, great for business trips. The Nespresso machine and water dispenser were small but great perks. Staff are friendly and helpful. Hotel has great views and excellent location with convenient parking lot in the back.
- 5/5
Wonderful property…. 100% will recommend
- 3/5
The front desk staff who checked me in would be better suited in the back office. Suggest soft human skills training. The location is convenient and safe. But why offer coffee filters when there is no coffee machine in sight!? I would consider returning, maybe.
- 5/5
Great stay, beautiful hotel. Not too far from the main strip in the gaslamp district or the train depot for people taking public transit. Plenty of stores and restaurants immediately around the hotel too. Valet staff were nice and very attentive too. Would recommend.
- 4/5
Clean, safe and well located. Reasonably priced.
- 5/5
The stay was great. It’s a 100 year old building that is very very nice. I liked this place so much I stayed an extra 4 hours.
- 4/5
We were a big group (9 people /4 rooms) The rooms were very well clean, but all 4 rooms had issues with the shower drain backing up and water spilling out every where. The Starbucks Nextdoor was very nice and a cute delicious bakery across the street was perfect for quick breakfast sandwiches. We were appreciative that we could check in about 45 min earlier, but when we asked for our complimentary water bottle It was an argument at the front desk where they kept saying they were only for VIP guests. As a VIP silver member I received an email saying the 3 rooms I booked would receive the added perk. Now, I don’t care about the water bottle itself, but I like my hotels.com app because you do get additional perks. I shouldn’t have to ask and then tell them I have an email stating I get something and do they want to see it.
- 5/5
Comfy hotel, room was a good size and the location was very convenient and in a walkable area with good public transport connections. Would stay again!
- 5/5
Wonderful location and the rooms are beautiful
- 4/5
Location was close to everything
- 3/5
Cons: the elevator and room was super small. Like abnormally small. Made me a little claustrophobic when I was in the elevator. The valet parking was expensive (50 dollars) especially when you are expected to tip- and you should). There was a weird hidden fee of 24 dollars so the 75 dollar deposit went out the door. Started out affordable but got too expensive too quick especially for what it is.
- 5/5
Valet was great! Very fast and attentive.

This place was extremely well done, staff amazingly friendly between the valet gentlemen and the clerks at the front desk to the cleaning staff. If there is anywhere I need to go when visiting next time this place will be my place no questions asked. Very convenient with the Starbucks next door or blue bottle down the way. Can’t wait to go back!

When I arrived at the hotel the First Lady was very nice. Went into my room tv not working. Called and inform within 10 mins of checking in. During a 3 hour waiting period we called an additional 2x for the tv to be fixed. Asked for face towels (hand wash cloths) whichever term you prefer. They brought 2 face towels for 3 people in one room. They were not as responsive as they should have been. Went down the next night for utensils. The guy had me standing there while he text only to have me wait for a fork and knife than smugly inform no spoons. The hotel was really quiet and conveniently located that’s the only perk I liked about this place. The room is really small and the bathroom is super small!
- 4/5
Great location.

Valet parking was easy, reasonably priced. The room was very comfortable. We were upgraded to a suite. The A/C kept the room cool,
- 5/5
Clean room and helpful staff
- 5/5
Great location, comfortable room
- 1/5
AC so loud woke us up every time it came on. Bed extremely uncomfortable. View from window of a large coolant machine. Loud which we expected from gaslamp. Very rude staff at check in. She was annoyed that we booked with expedia and therefore we feel we got the worst room on the property #201. Love gaslamp but will take our money elsewhere in the future.
- 2/5
Carpet smell. Need a big refresh
- 5/5
Yes parking was great and hotel was very clean quiet!
- 5/5
Excellent location to easily walk to all downtown attractions and places of interest. Comfortable character boutique hotel.
- 3/5
It was great tobhave oarking nextvto the building. It really is a beautiful building. Lots of history. My room was really small. The shower was excellent. I did not sleep well there.
- 5/5
Nice hotel within walking distance of the pier. They were very accommodating with allowing for a late checkout due to our flight delays.
- 4/5
AC worked great!
- 3/5
The staff at the hotel are very nice and have great customer service! However, the room was very small and smelled musty. The ac did not work, our room was very warm. The shower drain did not work. There was also no bar or food at the hotel. After exploring the area there are so many nice hotels around the area I would pick one of those instead of this one.
- 4/5
It was clearly an old hotel. The rooms were not as luxurious as I usually like them to be. But given the price and location, I would stay there again for a quick overnight. They allowed us to check in as early as 10 AM and we paid a bit extra for a late checkout.
- 4/5
The staffs are very nice.
- 4/5
Parking was easy. A little confusing but they did have an attendant out there who helped us out.
- 3/5
I went to the front desk to let them know, but nothing changed. Had to sit in the lobby to get any work done.
- 5/5
Did not like the light panel in 7th floor rooms. Even after a tutorial, no one explained how to request maid service. Water bottles were available except for an evening employee who said they were $3 each.
- 5/5
Reasonably priced, walkable area, clean rooms, great amenities, and staff was great!
- 5/5
Cute little older hotel. Close to everything we wanted to do
- 5/5
Always a great stay at the Sophia
- 5/5
The property is nice and in an area to make it easier to walk everywhere. The rooms are smaller than shown in the pictures.
- 5/5
The staff at the desk were so nice sets the tone for the entire stay will definitely be staying here again
- 4/5
The staffs members are very nice and professional. The hotel is very clean, nice view of the city, but in my room the bed it was very hard.
- 5/5
Overall the room was comfortable and the staff was very friendly. I was able to check in early with no issues which was nice. Room was decently clean, just a few things I noticed that I feel like would have elevated the experience, like the lamps and decor were dusty.
- 5/5
Very nice,, entric location
- 5/5
Great staff & location.
- 4/5
Spent a few nights before our cruise. Very convenient to Port, Little Italy, Gaslamp District
- 1/5
Rooms were in the 70’s, too hot for comfortable sleeping. The thermostat read 64 (as low as it would go) but A/C not working. The sink did not drain. We told the front desk when we went out, and were told they would send someone to fix it. We returned to stagnant water and had to brush our teeth using the shower. Front desk was not friendly or helpful, no apologies. Because we booked thru Hotels.com, they said they can only refund us the Resort Fee.
- 5/5
The place is clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. Instructions for checking in and the directions where to park excellent. would totally recommend to my friends and family.
- 4/5
Rooms are nice Parking is easy
- 5/5
My husband and I decided to stay here for our 10 year anniversary, and we enjoyed how clean and spacious the room was ! We stayed on the 7th floor and got to enjoy a good view. Parking was easy to find and close to the property. I will def be coming back again. Thanks to the staff for your hospitality ❤️
- 5/5
The Hotel Sofia is a great place to stay in downtown San Diego. Walking distance to anyplace you’d like to go. If not the trolley is just a block away. The staff is very friendly and answered any questions I had to my satisfaction. Will definitely be back.
- 1/5
The floors were filthy, the room door had gross white goop on it, there was no cafe and no Starbucks on property. The lobby had homeless in the chairs. I was certain it was a halfway house. I left after one night. I was booked for three. Yuck
- 5/5
The rooms were small but nice. Good location.
- 5/5
Room was great but a little stuffy. A/C was limited and so was ventilation.
- 4/5
Valet was great, very fast as well. Loved the different beverages offered at desk. Everything very clean. Only downfall really was our tv didnt work.
- 4/5
Nice place. Could be cleaner
- 4/5
Overall our stay was good. Staff was friendly and the location was great, not too far from the Gaslamp quarter. My only complaint is that between the towels in the bathroom there was a gigantic cockroach!
- 5/5
My stay was one night but it was good. Parking, staff and room.
- 5/5
Beautiful property at an excellent price!
- 4/5
Great location nice room. Once their restaurant an bar are open it’s worth 5 stars.
- 5/5
parking is okey but too expensive
- 5/5

- 4/5

- 5/5
Good location
- 2/5
The area was great for walking around. The hotel itself was nice and amazing staff! However our room had so many maintenance issues that made it difficult just to get ready for the day like the toilet, shower head and drain.
- 3/5
Everything was cool staff was friendly only problem was there parking. Not enough parking for guest I’m not sure why tell us there’s plenty of parking when there isn’t. Found myself driving around for a while
- 4/5
Nice place seem safe surroundings were pretty good for coffee and food would recommend
- 3/5
There was no connecting restaurant and the bed was to hard for me but and I we all satisfactory stay

I love this hotel
- 5/5
Parking was very close and the staff was friendly. The location is very convenient as well.
- 5/5
Amazing accessible room. Beautiful historic hotel. Next time we need to stay longer.
- 3/5
This hotel was ok. View was disappointing it was to the brick building next door. Not what I expected.
- 5/5
Beautiful king suite with great view
- 5/5
Very solid.
- 5/5
Great place in the Gas Lamp area
- 2/5
Hotel is older. Rooms are small. Staff was not attentive especially the valet.
- 5/5
Great stay, staff was very helpful
- 2/5
We got the key for our room right away we got to room and I turn on the AC unit and It start making a lot of noise. I called the front desk they told my wife it’s usually and old system and those make noise 😵💫they send a technician to check he spend 15 minutes trying to reduce the noise and nothing good happen The unit was very very loud we couldn’t even sleep So disappointed
- 5/5
Excellent stay, but the charge for amenities, I don’t understand. I never used anything but regular items (towels, soap, watched a little TV). Also, parking is a little excessive.
- 3/5
The location is great, it was overall clean and I liked the toiletries. You can do a much better hotel in San Diego for the same price.
- 3/5
It was a neat property but the room was tiny. The shower didn’t drain well so after 5 minutes the bottom of the shower filled up and started leaking onto the floor. When we got there the toilet lid was off of the back of the toilet. Just wasn’t what I was expecting. Photos make it seem like it’s in the heart of the area and it isn’t. Feels overpriced for the property and area. Husband and I are frequent travelers and were disappointed. We love a boutique hotel but this was not ideal for us.
- 4/5
clean room, not the friendliest staff but good location
- 5/5
The hôtel is located closed to metro lines and bus stations. Commuting to Balboa park just cross the street to 1st avenue and take Bus 7. Will take to the Zoo and Balboa park. Also bus 901 opposite direction take you to Coronado beach and bus 992 to the airport. Hotel is located walking distance to the Trolley tour hop on hop off by the bay where you can also find Midway military carrier museum and seaport village. The hotel was clean and quiet. Good relax atmosphere . However no inside bar or restaurant. Close near by cafes are available and few blocks away you can walk to Little Italy. I highly recommend The Sofia Hotel if you want to experience Sam Diego downtown. If you want the Beach head instead to Coronado Beach.
- 5/5
Amenities were great including Gym which I liked a lot.
- 4/5
The layout was interesting, the room was nice nothing super fancy, but it was comfortable. Only thing I didn’t love was the door didn’t have a swing bar lock which I prefer for safety.
- 5/5
Great historic hotel in the middle of new-fangled San Diego.
- 5/5
.
- 5/5
Parking was okay. Decent for downtown, fairly expensive per night. Staff were friendly. Air conditioning ran cold, heater worked well.
- 5/5
Valet parking was easy, although there was no one out front when we arrived, so we had to get out of the car to go in to find the valet. The front desk was friendly especially in the mornings. Late checkout was easy. Overall - hassle free and exceeded expectations. Although the light under the sink didn't seem to turn off which I thought was strange.
- 5/5
Amazing place! Great location!
- 3.5/5
The room appeared that it hadn't really been vacuumed (or at least not well), with things like bobby pins and tags from new clothing on the floor when I arrived. I also think the amenity charges are kind of bogus and a way to hike the price artificially.

Great location. Friendly staff! Easy layout. Elevevarors arrived quickly. Bed was clean and very comfortable. Plenty of pillows and towels. Room 517 smelled like rotten fruit had just been removed from refrigerator my entire 2 day stay.. No central lighting over the main area, so room is very dark. Shower has no shelf for soap or personal toiletries. No movie channels or streaming services, and several Direct TV channels were not available.

- 5/5
The staff was friendly and helpful.
- 3/5
The hotel is central to everything. We were in walking distance to the gaslamp, seaport, restaurants, etc.. They had a water fill-up station which saved us money from purchasing water bottles. The room needed a deep cleaning. The furniture was dusty and the phone was dirty. The TV would often need to be reset. It's an older hotel and they plan to renovate to bring some of the amenities up to date. Our stay was quiet and peaceful. Please do not knock on the door early in the morning multiple times to refresh the room if no one answers. We need rest. The staff were available to ask questions but didn't ask about our stay. Overall, my stay was average.
- 5/5
Great hotel, very clean and comfortable. Would recommend.

The newly renovated room has everything you need and is most comfortable. my first room was not on the seventh floor and it was not a good room. The air conditioner was so loud and there was no comparison to the room on the seventh floor.

- 5/5
Rooms were clean & staff were friendly.
- 3/5
The staff was good. However, the room had three separate hairs. One black hair in the sink, one black hair in the shower, and one grey hair on the bed. Also, there was a candy wrapper on the floor underneath the vanity. They need to do a much better job of cleaning. That’s the stuff that I found and I’m sure there was more. Also, one of the lights in the bedroom kept turning on automatically, and I had to call management at three in the morning to come and remove the lightbulb because I couldn’t do it myself. Overall, not too good of an experience at this hotel.
- 5/5
Beautiful place
- 5/5
Hotel was cute and in a nice, quiet location. Amenities were amazing and staff were very accommodating. Hotel and room were great. Great location to walk to Gaslamp, Little Italy, Petco Park, Embarcadero, or Seaport Village. Highly recommend, would stay there again while in downtown San Diego.
- 5/5
The hotel is hainte
- 5/5
We were greeted by the younger Scott working the front desk and he was very friendly. He helped us get our parking and room set up. We liked the room and loved the walk in shower. The hotel was convenient and within walking distance to may attractions in the Gaslamp district. Only negative is the parking lot was very small, difficult to get in and out of, and expensive. $40 per night self parking or $50 for Valet.
- 4/5
Good
- 4/5
Nice room good location
- 2/5
The room was so expensive when we got in it was so small the windows did not open they were sealed and blocked so there was no view. Worst things all there hidden fees they took $250 deposit on my credit card and charged every penny for different made up resort and taxes they were charging daily fees . Never again
- 4/5
Amazing overall. Parking was tricky though.
- 5/5
The staff was friendly, the room was beautifully decorated, the bathroom was spacious, the views weee breathtaking.
- 3/5
Room was old; old carpet, doors, the staff was good, the amenities are normal, and no complains only the hotel looks old in the pictures looks different that's why I pick up this hotel on last moment. But you don't expect extra charge on parking and amenities and for this.
- 5/5
Hotel staff was super friendly, rooms were clean and cozy. Fun experience!
- 5/5
Exceptional
- 4/5
Classy, cute and good location distance in down town. Rooms are on the smaller side but still very cozy. staff is very nice and helpful. NO parking. unless you want to pay 40 dollars A DAY. to park your car in a lot. very inconvenient and very expensive and annoying to deal with. Better hope you have a good friend or uber if you didn’t bring you car to get around if you aren’t from here.
- 3/5
I only have 3 downsides to this hotel. 1. My room did not look like the pictures at all. It was a mix of “modern” and old. I was just happy there was no bugs. 2. The hallways are really creepy and dim. It’s like walking through a hunted Mansion, I thought a ghost was going to pop out any minute. 3. The parking here sucks. There are only about 20 spots that those who choose self parking and you have to sit and wait until someone leaves. The rest of the parking lot is for valet but when those spots are filled they use the 20. The parking lot is also public parking so many others come and park there as well. One night it was so bad that lines of cars were waiting. Only one valet guy came and took all our cars and packed them tightly into the lot. I had to pick up my keys the next morning. I couldn’t really hear anyone around me except for when the housekeeper was cleaning. Everyone was nice. I don’t recommend going with valet because there was always a long line wrapped around and it seemed like only one guy wanted to work while the rest just stood and talked. Over all just walk quickly to your room, don’t do valet, and don’t expect it to look like the pictures. I was told it was renovated in 2005 so they might have posted the pictures from 2005.
- 3/5
Good enough
- 2/5
Weird noises with the air conditioning and walls not soundproof AT ALL. We were able to hear the people next to us speaking and it was very hard to sleep. The bed itself was not very comfortable and the pillows were not supportive. It is an OK place to spend the night, but is definitely not luxurious or how we anticipated it would be.
- 5/5

- 5/5
Great sty staff was very helpful
- 5/5
Room was nice, staff was great. All amenities were good.
- 5/5
Cozy hotel
- 3/5
For the price. I think it was pretty good. Air conditioner kept on shutting down. And room smelled a bit like cigarette. But once the air worked for a bit, it smelled better. Room seems to be a bit dated, and didn’t have soap for hands
- 5/5
The room was very nice and clean. It was an easy walk to the pier and cruise ship terminal. Lots of restarants and amenities within blocks of the hotel. Staff were very nice and attentive to our needs.
- 1/5
When I returned, a male colleague checked me in. I was surprised to see two additional fees; he said he would revise them and handed me a metal “VIP” water bottle. Unfortunately, the room was the smallest I’ve had in recent memory, with no proper table or luggage stand, and a view completely blocked by a large mechanical unit outside the window. Most concerning, the door had only a deadbolt—no secondary lock or chain, which I’ve never seen before. Overall, the check-in experience was sluggish and unprofessional, and beyond the lobby, the property feels worn and outdated. I’ll be staying elsewhere on my next visit.
- 5/5
Nice solid room, nice shower, pleasant staff in an older but well keep hotel. Know there’s no onsite bar or dinning but that you’re downtown, steps from things.

The hotel is located at a noisy intersection in a downtown area that is past its prime. The staff was indifferent. The room was small though it had been seen recent updating.
- 5/5
- 3.5/5
the staff are friendly and helpful. not a big problem, but the AC in my room: when it's off, the room is stuffy when it's on, it blows right to my head.
- 5/5
We stayed on the 7th floor in one of the remodeled rooms and it was stunning! So clean. LOVED the nepresso maker. So tastefully decorated. We had a room with 2 beds and it was a bit small compared to other hotels but it was perfect for us, as we didn’t spend much time there anyway. Location was PERFECT! Walked everywhere. We even walked to Balboa Park (did 10 miles that day!). The bus stop to take us to airport was just a block away and so clean and convenient. Drink stations were handy and staff friendly and helpful. Would 100% stay here again!!
- 5/5
The room was very cute and boutique like; great for a one night stay. Impressed with the Nespresso machine and a local winery bottle of Chardonnay in the room. Staff were amazing!
- 3.5/5
Beds were comfortable, location was good. Room was tastefully decorated. Nice bathroom and shower. Plenty of nice towels. Good lighting. Decent chairs/sofa in living room. The first room we were placed in felt like a dungeon (faced close opposite wall/corner of the building). We asked for a different room and they offered only a $25/night upgrade for a suite. The suite also was dark, on a low floor, and faced AC equipment outside. Finally we got a decent room (higher floor suite). We'd stayed there before and had higher expectations, oh well. Silly thing also, the toilet paper holder kept ejecting the TP roll on the floor (yuck!) due to poor design or installation - needs to be replaced.

- 3/5
The room was very dusty. It looks like they don't do proper cleaning. Overpriced.
- 1/5
Hotel is really tired. Room was really small and dingy. Bed was really uncomfortable. TV did not work. Lobby is deserted. No restaurant as shown in on line photos.
- 3/5
Th hotel itself was lovely. The restaurant was closed due renovations and that is my only issue. Location is great. Staff could have been more courteous but all in all it was fine
- 5/5
Excellent location! The staff was friendly and the hotel is lovely. Our room was nice and spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. I would not hesitate to stay here again in the future.
- 5/5
Helpful staff, all of them.
- 5/5
Clean room, nice area. Really close to most things we wanted to visit. Uber rides were pretty cheap since everything was close by!
- 3/5
The room seriously lacked in cleanliness. Surfaces covered in prints and the dust on celing, vent and wardrobe was HORRIBLE. Good location. Day staff more hospitable than night staff. Expect to be charged FOR EVERYTHING!
- 5/5
Very modern with a nice room with a good coffee maker. Very nice front desk staff.
- 5/5
Rooms spotless staff superb
- 4/5
When we arrived the staff was not rude but had a bad vibe to them like we were interrupting them. The staff that checked us out and grabbed our car 100% the best. Had smiles and were super helpful.
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Room was clean ,and spotless will definitely book again
- 5/5
We liked our stay
- 2/5
The staffs were kind and told me they will provide the upgraded room, but the room was very tiny and smelled bad in the toilet. The desk area was not cleaned properly, I cleaned it with my wipes. The amenities they provide are not worthy. The heater was so loud and was not affective, so I did not use it. I'm so glad I did not stay any longer than a night. The window blockout curtains had much gap in between, did not block much.
- 5/5

- 2/5
Upon checking in they added a mandatory amenities fee of $17.65 per night. This was not disclosed before booking. I am not sure what the “amenities” were. They did give me a bottle of water. The gym wasn’t that nice, the room was very small and the bed was not comfortable. The TV also had no sound.
- 5/5
Great staff - excellent customer service, beautiful suite, great hotel location, and parking location is easily accessible and convenient location
- 3/5
The hotel itself is very nice, but the rooms are very small, but comfortable. The add is misleading since there is no restaurant on site as advertised, and no free drinks upon checkin as advertised. There are no amenities at the hotel (no pool, gym, snacks, ice maker, etc) but they still charge an undisclosed $20 daily resort amenities charge? Otherwise it is a clean and comfortable hotel.
- 5/5
Overall everything was great!! From arriving to leaving. Even my son and his girlfriend stayed at the hotel and they loved it

Hotel very close to restaurants. Enjoyed the plush oversized bath towels. Staff was friendly. Great price thru booking.com Sewage smell in the hotel one evening was very potent. Water was backing up into the bathroom sink while we were away and it left a ring of black residue. We also noticed that black particles would appear on our bathroom sink possibly from the vent. Bed was ok.

The hotel is in a nice location that is within walking distance (about 10-15 minutes) from the convention center. The room was clean and updated, although very small. The room was very small, and the shower did not drain effectively. The staff is not honest: When we arrived, they told us they could bill us for the lot behind the hotel at 40/night. I asked if there were other nearby lots for less, and they said they had no knowledge of that. In the morning, I was able to see that there were three nearby lots, one across the street, all half the price. If you can't say, then say that, don't lie and say you don't know about the lot directly across the street for half the price. Next, the hotel refused to provide an invoice for the stay. Because this was a work trip, the lack of an invoice caused serious issues getting reimbursement for the stay from my work. I would stay away if you are traveling for work.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel. The first room we were in the AC wasn’t working. The staff let us switch rooms and even upgraded us into a bigger room free of charge! Only thing I didn’t like was the price honestly. It’s a bit pricey but the location is great.
- 5/5
10 minute walk from Amtrak train and cruise port.
- 5/5
It was a great base to explore San Diego. Staff was friendly, professional and helpful. The location was perfect for walking and catching the bus. We would definitely stay again. It’s an older/boutique style hotel. So the room was small, but it was fine since we spent most of the time exploring the city. And the AC was loud. Not a big deal, just something to consider.
- 5/5
Great. The staff was very nice. It’s in a great location
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, clean and comfortable room.
- 5/5
Wow this place is so charming and classy (and affordable!). The a/c is a bit loud, turning on and off, but I turned it off and the temp was okay. I really liked this place.
- 5/5
Really pretty hotel and the staff was really friendly
- 5/5
Super clean. Great location. Friendly staff
- 3/5
Rooms are very small, shower water wasn’t very hot, and furniture looks beat up
- 5/5
Small room but very clean and comfortable
- 5/5
Totally wonderful staff. Amazing modern light systems although took a little time to figure them out. Comfortable beds. Great Nespresso coffee in the room. Nice hot shower. A little much street noise but it’s on a main ambulance route and it’s city so should be expected.
- 5/5
Friendly, helpful staff & comfortable room
- 4/5
Good location and quaint hotel. Just a few things I would have liked to see to make 5 stars. 4.5.

Great service
- 2/5
The Sofia hotel was about what we had expected. When we got there, there were immediately daily fees that we hadn’t necessarily expected on top of the room charge, plus $40 per day for parking (which wasn’t surprising). The hotel itself was small with not really anything going on in it. The rooms were very small also. The hotel itself was clean enough, and so were the rooms. We did have rats or mice in our a/c vents that woke us up most nights squeaking and running around. They also made a ton of noise during the day but we tried to ignore it. We considered asking to move rooms but never did, which is on us lol. The housekeepers came in every day and cleaned the room nicely and added more coffee pods. The shower also leaked pretty bad. Overall, it was right downtown and in a safe enough area, which was good enough for us.
- 5/5
Best spot for me walking distance to every thing
- 4/5
It could be cleaner. Carpets are dirty.
- 5/5
Amazing stay! The staff were friendly and the hotel was clean. This hotel is also close to the Gaslamp District and Little Italy. We will definitely be staying her again on our next trip to San Diego.
- 5/5
Room was very clean. Exactly what you need. Staff was very welcoming. Luxury feel and vibe. I would totally stay here again.

- 1/5
Did not get the room I reserved and paid for.
- 4/5
Great hotel, great staff it is close to the glasslamp quarter but be ready to pay additional fees not mentioned on Hotels.com. Parking fee, guess amenities fee, historical preservation fee, transient fee this adds to around $60 per day. I would still recommend this hotel but would be good for the site to mention additional fees.
- 0.5/5
I stayed at the Sofia Hotel a few days ago and was extremely disappointed. The property is very old, and the rooms are extremely small and outdated nothing like what is shown online. At the reception, there was a tall male employee who was disrespectful and had a very rude attitude, which made the experience even worse. Customer service was far below acceptable standards. The hotel advertises discounted prices, but it feels like a trap considering the condition of the property and the service provided. I specifically booked a room with 2 king beds, but upon arrival, I was given a room with 2 full-size beds, which is completely unacceptable and misleading. Based on the room quality, service, and overall experience, this hotel is worth no more than $100 per night at most. I would not recommend this hotel and would not stay here again.
- 3/5
The bathroom door is impossible
- 5/5
Room was spotless. Great amenities. Friendly & helpful staff!
- 3/5
The room was clean but the queen bed seemed smaller somehow. Good luck in the shower if you're a bigger person because it's tiny and very slippery and ours was very slow draining. The provided coffee maker didn't work. I had to program the tv myself since it got no channels. No power at the bathroom vanity outlet. Staff seemed friendly but very scattered brains maybe because it was NYE. The hotel should really consider providing umbrellas for the staff working out in the rain. Although the lobby carpet looks dirty and the place a bit dingy there was not one bad smell or trash anywhere. The location is great.
- 5/5
The room was nice. The staff was accommodating. I would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Excellent service and beautiful hotel. Safe and easy to go anywhere
- 5/5
We had a great experience at the Sofia Hotel. The staff was super welcoming and responsive. Perfectly located to many dining options and bars and the metro system.
- 5/5
The hotel was really nice, the room was very clean and pretty inside. only thing was the sliding door for the bathroom didn’t work. area outside the hotel very nice during the day with good food around, but at night not so great went outside to the sidewalk and was a homeless guy chased me into the hotel. hotel security was quick to help tho so very very much appreciated
- 5/5
Great and amazing staff and room
- 5/5
Love it
- 1/5
The bed is small; husband’s feet hung slightly off the bed. Staff was unfriendly and front desk attendant that checked us in wasn’t helpful had to go back a couple times for information about the hotel. Walls are not sound proof can hear clearly the next rooms conversations and mind you they were not loud neighbors, the sound carried over through the vents. They didn’t disclose that they had a guest service fee until after we were checking out for a room we already prepaid in advance for; seemed shady because why not charge it in the prepaid costs when I booked the room? Would helped determine if I even wanted to book since it was another 100 bucks.

Clean room. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Cleanliness, location, service Small room but very workable
- 5/5
Very friendly staff and clean establishment. Conveniently close to all downtown activities
- 4.5/5
The direction of the air flow from the air conditioning , it was directed to the bed. I have to switch it off.
- 4/5
Rooms small but nice. Appreciate microwave and fridge. Casting function in TV did not work which was annoying-could only stream Netflix because it was on remote.
- 5/5
The recently remodled room was extremely luxurious. I loved the large tv that extended out and to the bed. It was great for late night movie watching. Friendly and accommodating staff.

- 5/5
Had a great stay at the Sofia Hotel. We stayed in one of their renovated rooms and it was nice and bright. Would definitely stay there again
- 4.5/5
The TV did not have a signal for some reason, and the shower had a small lead onto the floor, but both issues were pretty minor. We did not miss not having a TV as the WiFi was excellent.
- 2/5
Hotel sent us a message before check-in that they will upgrade our room; however, they did not fulfill this promise. When we checked with the front desk, they denial the message was sent from the hotel but instead from Expedia.
- 5/5
There also was not any vegan creamer for the Nespresso (but this is something I'm used to). The gym was very nice. They also have a nice yoga studio. I love how dog friendly they were. And there is a grassy area not too far. There’s great food options close by, but if you want quick, there’s a corner bakery and chipotle across the street. And a panera not too far. Parking was easy. We did the LAZ self parking at a discount. Valet was also offered for a little more. There wasnt any EV charging at the LAZ and I’m unsure about valet. Overall, I really like this hotel and would stay again.
- 5/5
The staff the location the comfort everything was amazing.
- 5/5
Clean, close to the Gaslamp district, good service
- 5/5
Room was really clean. Service was attentive if needed. The water pressure is crazy good in the shower. My room was a little small but I didn't need much so not a problem for me.
- 4/5
This hotel is conveniently located as a close drive to the airport and the Convention Center, where I attended a conference. Room is small but clean. Hotel is very quiet. Friendly staff. Did not seem to be near any convenience stores for snacks but they at least have drinks (possibly more) available for purchase at the front desk. I had thought about bringing my family along, but considering how small the room is, I'm glad I didn't. I would stay again for a solo trip, though.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel in the gaslamp District close to everything

Good location, Nespresso in the room, comfortable bed, but room is very small, no view, and water comes out of the shower. Ok for one night.
- 5/5

- 5/5
Great location and history to the hotel
- 5/5
Clean, friendly staff, close to eateriesand cruise port.
- 4/5
Rooms felt clean, staff was pretty friendly, and the bike rental was a plus (1hr limit). Convenient location as well - was very walkable to all points in the area and there were a few bus stops nearby. Only downside was the light that came through the windows. There were blackout curtains but with the way the hutch with TV on it was positioned, you couldn't pull the curtains closed behind it. Enjoyed the history of the building and the quirkiness of the staircases (they didn't all go down to ground floor). Decent hotel gym as well and I enjoyed the yoga area to stretch out post run.
- 5/5
Everything was great with Sofia except for the gentleman and he looked at his computer and said well “you basically the best option available for the price you paid.” according to my reservation I paid for a premium queen, and what I was given corner room number 730 the bed was not even a queen it was a full- which, yes, I did measure and it was 54/75 which is definitely a full sized mattress. Also the room I booked which was to be a premier queen corner room was, on average, $40/night more expensive than the full/double sized room I was put in. Is there a possibility of compensation for this? The room was incredibly cramped and the bathroom was tiny. I’m a 5’9.25” man who weighs 174 lbs and, sitting on the toilet my shoulders were but an inch on either side from touching the wall or the shower wall.
- 5/5
My room was upgraded for free due to me being an Expedia VIP member. Great room and great service. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The hotel was a great price and was very upscale. The parking behind the hotel was awesome and convenient, I could see my car from my room. The price for parking was great as well compared to other hotels. It was only a 15 minute walk to gaslamp so definitely a plus.
- 5/5
Good staff. Peaceful and relaxing. Was a great stay! Would definitely come back.
- 5/5
Great staff and rooms
- 3/5
Room 739, shower pressure was light... the room was small and bathroom, wssnt a fan of the noise.
- 4/5
Sofia is our go to hotel in Downtown San Diego - we live outside of the city and it’s our choose hotel for staycation. It located in walking distance from everything downtown (Gas Lamp, Little Italy, Embarcadero, Seaport Village, East Village, Petco, Rady Shell, Balboa Theater, Civic Theater, etc). The typically have the best rates of anywhere in the area and the rooms are clean. It isn’t as updated as other places in the area, but it is the best value we’ve found.
- 5/5
- 3/5
While I can appreciate the cleanliness, the room and shower were very small. Didn’t appear to get a corner room as advertised. Having the Starbucks connected to the hotel was amazing. Staff was friendly.
- 5/5
Hotel might put in the brochure that there are several places to eat around the property.
- 5/5
Staff were great!
- 5/5
Clean room and hotel over all. Loved that there is a Starbucks pick up store front right on the bottom floor just adjacent from the lobby.
- 5/5
Had a room adjacent to noisy elevator. Staff moved us to a nice quiet room. Lovely hotel. Great location
- 5/5
I really enjoyed my stay. The staff was friendly from front desk to housekeeping. Easy to get to from SAN airport, I took the bus for $2.50. There are several restaurants nearby for a bite to eat too.
- 4/5
Good
- 5/5
This is our first stay after trying many options in the gas lamp and Little Italy's area and this is by far our favorite. Clean, safe, quiet and reasonably close to everything in the area
- 5/5
The corner room was clean and beautiful. Staff was welcoming and the hotel was super quiet. Overall a great stay. The only thing that was a small issue was the AC was super loud so I couldn’t use it while trying to sleep or in the room. I just turned it on while I was out of the room to keep it cool. Not an issue this time of year but if in the summer I may have been more uncomfortable.
- 4/5
Clean room, very quiet.

Room was v. clean, comfortable, quiet, and had great amenities (Nespresso maker, Verden soaps & shampoo etc). Gym was small but also clean and well-equipped. Easy walk to Marina, Little Italy, Convention Center, Gaslamp, and Santa Fe Depot areas. Fair price. Friendly and pprofessional

Great room and staff. Not much amenities but good clean rooms. Downside is parking is outrageous for the property.
- 3/5
Positives were a clean room and easy check in and check out.
- 5/5
Excellent stay all-around!
- 4/5
Clean rooms, though very small, they were cozy. The location was good for going to both Seaport and GasLamp Quarter. Nesspresso coffee was yummy, digital panel to control room was easy to use. No resraurant or room service. I would stay again.

I was told I was going to get complimentary room upgrade, along with a bottle to refill and i dint not get neither. TV in the room did not work, i called front desk an was advised to unplug it from the wall an let it restart, after multiple attempts it continued to no work. All I was told was that maintenance was not available. Terrible service.
- 4/5
AC was so loud. It rattled. Borderline affected our stay.
- 5/5
The staff was amazing. Great room, great in room coffee. The front desk ladies were so super nice. Loved it would definitely go back
- 1/5
After the fact resort fees. Automatic thumbs down. Half naked homeless man passed out next to the front door, for hours, automatic thumbs down.
- 5/5
The stay was great. The rooms are small, yet well outfitted for all your travel needs. Great location and friendly staff!
- 5/5
We really like this hotel. The A/C worked perfectly, and the room was very clean and comfortable. We will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Amazing hotel to stay at. Great staff and service, location is amazing everything was within 20 mins of where we all wanted to go. I will absolutely keep this hotel in mind again when I visit San Diego again!
- 5/5
Great location, smaller rooms but very nice
- 5/5
Wonderful newly renovated room. Great location
- 4/5
I liked the refillable water bottle, candy and juice in the lobby and staff were personable. Only issue was the shower drain was very slow, it was cleaned and was better however still slow.
- 5/5
Delightful staff and room. Great location between train station and gaslight district

- 4/5
Staff was extremely friendly. Our first nights stay was wonderful, but the next morning the power in our room went out, not the whole hotel, just our room. So we were transferred and upgraded to a nicer room, which was lovely. But then when we returned to our room later that night , there was a light on our bedside that was strobing and would not turn off as we were trying to settle into bed. We then had to be transferred to another room at two in the morning so we would be able to sleep. The room was comparable to our original room so we had no issue with the room itself, just the inconvenience of having to be moved twice , but the staff was very accommodating, very understanding, and very kind so no notes on their half. They comped our fees and our parking for 2 nights which was lovely.
- 5/5
Super happy with my stay. The bathroom (shower, toilet) does feel a little tight and squishy however not a huge deal. Bed was comfy, always came back from a day out to a clean room. Short walk to food options and a grocery store so plenty of options or if i needed to top up on things. Would stay with them again in the future.
- 5/5
I cannot stress how much we enjoyed our stay here. Everything from the staff to the room was above expectations
- 5/5
The convention center, little Italy and many restaurants.
- 2/5
The Sofia from the exterior is a charming building but the interior is very dated and half clean. The check in staff was less than friendly, I arrive a bit after 5 pm. My Expedia VIP amenity was a bottle of water. Getting to my hotel room you can easily see that the interior is falling apart, it’s dusty the carpet is beyond worn out. The hotel room itself room 208 was not clean there is mold on the ceiling shower. The blankets and pillows smelled used and unclean. There was hair from the previous guest, I guess they didn’t even bother washing the linens. There’s like mold or dirt on the ceiling above the thermostat. We noticed there was stains on the curtains. Overall for a hotel that was rated 8/10 I feel very underwhelmed and bambozled based on the service and experience.
- 1/5
I was promised an upgraded room, but it never happened. The room I got was very dirty and definitely not worth $200 a night. There were no basic amenities like toothpaste or toothbrushes — things that even motels provide. When I asked the front desk about it, they just laughed and said they didn’t have any, without even trying to fix the issue. I had to stay for three days watching them make no effort to help or improve the situation. It was honestly frustrating and unprofessional. While the area has shops nearby and seems convenient for business travelers, none of that makes up for the poor cleanliness and lack of basic courtesy. I would never stay here again unless they completely change their service and management approach.
- 5/5
The Sophia is a wonderful property near all areas we enjoy.
- 5/5
Room was very spacious. Lots of activities to do within at least a 15min walk. I loved how they give us access to free bikes to roam and explore the city. The room was very clean and the staff were excellent. I would definitely book this hotel again in the near future. 10/10
- 5/5
It was clean, wonderful city view, nice staff and walking to many areas. No car needed. Trolley was good Many really good restaurants. Easy walk to Marina

Great front desk people

Room was a bit small but the view was nice.
- 5/5
Great location! Super cute and clean room. Everything you need in room.
- 5/5
no scenic view
- 5/5
I loved the stay here, highly recommended
- 4/5
Clean rooms just a bit outdated. Space is also very cramped. The shower design is also horrible. Water would always get into the floor after showering due to the bad design on the shower door. It’s near everything though so it was convenient if traveling without a car.

Paulina from the Front Desk gave is excellent costumer service, shoutout to her.
- 5/5
I was in one of the newly renovated rooms on the 7th floor and was very impressed. Although the rooms aren’t large, they’re great for a couple or solo business travel in the core and not too far to walk to the Gaslamp District. Nespresso machines a bones for a quality coffee in the morning. Would recommend and would stay again.
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff
- 2/5
Room wasnt fully clean. Shower drain was clogged with hair, hand prints all over the room and cup rings on the sink. Most uncomfortable bed, pillows and sheets.
- 5/5
Good room. Clean, bed was decent, not very loud. Excellent shower. Very good location. Parking situation is bad - DO NOT use Tower 180 nearby as it's basically a scam.
- 5/5
We had a wonderful time at the Sophia Hotel. They upgraded us to the top floor with a recently renovated room. Had a few housekeeping requests, which were handled immediately. Polite and accommodating staff. Friendly Valet attendants.

The Nespresso machine in the room was very nice too. We also enjoyed the free bikes and rode them to Balboa Park.

Very excellent! Will stay again!
- 3/5
Room was stuffy. Air took long to get room cool and was noisy. Sofa bed was broken. No restaurants nearby.
- 3/5
The place is okay, but they don't provide the upgrade as stated on Expedia. In fact, they never do. Their complimentary drink is just a bottle of water! Everything for the coffee (Nespresso) comes at an extra cost. Very poor amenities.
- 3/5
When we got back to the hotel, we saw a clerk giving someone bottled water so we assumed it was already in our room since it hadn't been given earlier when we checked in. Well, no that was not the case. We went back to lobby, got the bottles of water and were told they had filling stations on the 1st, 3rd & 5th floors. We left for our event and returned around midnight. The hotel was very quiet which was awesome. the next morning around 8 we went to the lobby to use the wifi because the room's wifi was extremely spotty. When I asked the same clerk who checked us in where the water station was on the 1st floor, she said "there's not one down here", more misinfo!
