Reviews
The Horton Grand Hotel is a historic, charming hotel located in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. Guests appreciate its unique character, friendly staff, and convenient location, but some express dissatisfaction with the parking situation, extra fees, and maintenance issues in the rooms.
- Historic charm and unique character
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Parking is expensive and limited
- Extra fees for amenities and services
- 5/5
Great place! Stayed because of a concert at PETCO. Did have a cleaning just walk into my room at 0800 without knocking. She said it was because I didn’t have a “DND” on the handle. I was kinda angry. Otherwise, no issues.
- 5/5
The hotel was a very nice boutique hotel! Room was clean and easily locatable. The bed was comfortable and the room rate was not bad. We will be staying here again.
- 4/5
It was a very nice hotel, staff was friendly. It was close to dining and shopping. Our only complaint would be there was a wedding we didn't know about and even then it wasn't too noisy. We'd stay here again
- 5/5
We had a smooth check in and valet parking, then we were happy with the room!! Beautiful grounds and we started at the whiskey bar!! Perfect location, in a safe and fun environment. We will definitely be back!!!
- 5/5
Would come back
- 5/5
What a fabulous hotel, the oldest in the city, old world charm!!! we had a fabulous room on the fourth floor overlooking the beautiful tree that sprouts up our balcony was wonderful view of the city. Can’t stay enough about this fabulous hotel!!!! classic margarita in the salt and whiskey bar was delicious as where the Parmesan fries!!!! Robert met us at the door and was absolutely charming! Victor pointed us in the right direction to enjoy the gaslamp quarter and had lots of helpful tidbits if I ever come back to San Diego I am absolutely staying here!!!!!!
- 5/5
Salt and Whiskey is the hotel and I appreciated the free drinks. John behind the bar was fabulous!!! There is history all over the hotel which is fun to stop and read about. If I had one complaint (room 345) it would be a balcony facing a brown wall. Not a spot to hang. I will be back!
- 2/5
The front desk gal checking us in was very rude. Why be in customer service and then be rude to your customers? The balcony was facing the alley where the maintenance and cleaning people hung out. Lastly, the hallways constantly smelled like weed. It’s a shame because the hotel was beautiful. Our room was great minus the location since I paid more for a balcony.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly staff
- 5/5
Great location. Wonderful staff. Drink tickets for the lobby bar. Nice atrium to sit with a group in the lobby. Robert was very pleasant.
- 5/5
Great location and rate
- 5/5
Rooms facing the streets can be a little noisy at night, but noise level is perfectly acceptable.
- 5/5
No parking available so had to park far away and move car by 10 am next day
- 5/5
The staff was so nice. Beautiful hotel.
- 5/5
Adorable hotel! Staff was wonderful, helpful and polite.
- 5/5
We stay here every time. The staff is extremely nice and rooms are very clean. Salt and Whiskey has a good variety of craft cocktails as well
- 5/5
Such a cute beautiful boutique hotel lots of New Orleans vibes amazing rooms !
- 4.5/5
Superb
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel. The rooms were of nice size, definitely on the older side but based off the style of the hotel it’s not surprising. The staff was very nice. We only stayed 1 night. But it was centrally located. Valet is a pretty penny but it’s pretty standard I noticed around San Diego hotels.
- 5/5
So vey pretty and the location was excellent to all the places we wanted to go. Our room was very clean and comfortable. We will definitely stay there again
- 5/5
All good
- 5/5
Had to pay to park at the hotel I'm staying at
- 5/5
Beautifully restored old hotel in the heart of Gaslamp district. Very clean facilities, excellent friendly staff. Fireplace in room was a nice touch. Because it's such an old building, you have to expect and accept that it's going to be a little quirky, like an old elevator, but that's part of it's charm.
- 4/5
The room air conditioning said it was on but the room never cooled. Thank goodness we barely got by with the ceiling fan. The ambiance of the hotel is great and historic. Drinks very tasty at the bar. Carpet in the room could be cleaner looking or replaced
- 4/5
This is a beautiful hotel and we would stay here again. My only complaint is the doors tend to slam shut so the noise carries and can be startling. I recommend bringing earplugs if you don’t want to hear your neighbors comings and goings.
- 3/5
There were annoying plumbing issues in our room. The bathroom sink and shower did not drain well. The tub stopper didn't stay open. The shower valve was sticking and difficult to turn. Water barely came out of the shower head because the valve to turn on the shower leaked. Maintenance just seemed to be slipping. Also, it was disappointing to learn on check-in that the hotel restaurant is only open for dinner. I was not aware they no longer served breakfast. It's a nice hotel, but I hope they are not being thrifty to the point they are letting the quality suffer.
- 5/5
This is one of the great San Diego hotels. Outstanding all around—from the room amenities to the hotel bar and grill.
- 3/5
-TV was also not working properly -Shower was very sensitive and would get way too hot or way too cold and lose pressure in the process -Flew in early due to cheap flight, wasnt able to check in until 4(??) I thought maybe 1 or 2. This was stressful since we had an event to get ready for that started at 6. We we were only able to get in because our friends (who had VIP checkin) name dropped us even though there was a room ready and we were not informed -staff were very friendly -the open courtyard has its drawbacks... hearing all the loud traffic, helicopters, and loud guests at 2am. Otherwise it was pretty. -location was great, walking distance to so many things -old building so you can hear everything, floor boards creaking, neighbors on balconies.
- 4/5
love that the restaurant was downstairs
- 5/5
This hotel is by far the best hotel I have stayed in staff was amazing. Rooms were clean the beds were comfortable walking distance to Gaslamp I highly recommend this hotel. Close to beaches. Will definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
I love this turn of the century hotel. It is beautifully maintained. I felt like I was going back in time during the gilded age when I stepped into the bar. The only negative is that , although downtown San Diego is beautiful and you will want to walk around, there are a lot homeless people.
- 3/5
Downside : we were going to eat at the restaurant but the bartender was preoccupied with his conversation with someone at the bar. Also , we stayed 7 days and only had housekeeping 2 days. Kind of lax for the $$$ you charge.
- 4/5
toilet
- 5/5
Hard to find someone at the front desk. But everything else was great! Near lots of places to eat/drink.
- 3/5
The bar downstairs was the best part. The room was nice enough, but I could hear everyone around us, in the halls and outside.
- 5/5
Delightful hotel. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The adjoining bar with dining options was a big plus. Would definitely stay there again.
- 4/5
Great historical building close to petco n convention center gas lamp
- 5/5
Wonderful stay at a clean property with very friendly staff!!
- 4/5
The hotel bar was especially unique, filled with eclectic artwork and interesting décor covering the walls, giving it so much personality. We also loved how the hotel has preserved its vintage charm, with magical little touches and surprises tucked throughout the property that made exploring feel special.
- 5/5
What a beautiful historical hotel ! Simply gorgeous and very well situated!
- 4/5
We would consider staying again, as it has a great location. We saw no other hotel in the area that had the charm of the Horton.
- 5/5
Location, cleanliness and staff very friendly

Great price and location, walkable to Petco park and gaslamp nightlife!

Old building, no fridge or microwave provided. Mattress is bad to a point my back hurts. Thin walls we can here ever one around us. Parking expensive. Bad experience in total

We enjoyed our stay. The room was clean and comfortable and we really liked the overall style of the place. Location was convenient and cool.

Great location and very charming hotel. Food and drinks were fantastic at Salt and Whiskey which is part of the hotel.

- 5/5
What an amazing hotel. Everyone was so friendly. Loved our stay.
- 5/5
I stayed here while attending a conference at the convention center. It was an easy walk to the center. The location is excellent with many cafes and restaurants nearby. The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms have everything you need with the added character of being a restored hotel. Nothing
- 5/5
Nothing
- 5/5
Great location for downtown stuff, 10 minute walk from convention center.Staff very friendly, nice old building. Guest room could use freshening up snd a brighter reading light. Would stay again,
- 5/5
The location was perfect for us as it was near the convention center where we needed to be. We were able to access the Gaslamp district and the amazing food that was nearby. The room was clean and didn’t have any funky smells. The water pressure could have been a bit stronger but that’s just a personal preference. They did give us drink vouchers which was a plus! Overall a great stay and would definitely do it again!
- 5/5
Truly excellent hotel! The staff were great and the hotel was absolutely adorable-even the elevator was cute! Location was perfect and within walking distance of a million restaurants as well as Petco Park. In a city FULL of hotels, this is definitely the one to beat.
- 4.5/5
Stylish hotel with lots of character, and well positioned in the Gas Lamp Quarter. No breakfast on offer in the hotel, though plenty of cafes close by from 0630.
- 4/5
It's a beautiful older hotel. It could use some updating, but it's nice. A few of the girls at the reception desk were not very friendly or professional. You get a free drink for staying at the Horton Grand, which is a nice touch. Parking is valet only. The room was clean. It was a little loud, as you could hear people talking and moving around. We didn't go to the restaurant, just the bar to get our free drink. The valet was very nice and helpful.
- 5/5
We love staying here!! It's walking distance to everything! Staff is great!!
- 4/5
The room was nice and spacious with high ceilings, cute balcony too.
- 5/5
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel the room was clean and all the carpet the bedding it was all in really good shape the furniture it was all very nice very nice and the staff was very friendly. They do offer one free cocktail per night, which was nice and the bar downstairs was fully stocked with a large variety of spirits, wine, and beer. They have an outdoor patio, which is also fun as well as an indoor patio like an atrium with rooms that have balconies that overlook the atrium and the other rooms have balconies as well in case you need to step outside for fresh air.
- 5/5
Very unique historical hotel in the middle of the gaslamp quarter. Good prices and clean rooms. Was in town for a conference and everything was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to explore the gaslamp area or see a baseball game
- 5/5
The hotel is very charming. We enjoyed the style and history. Salt and whiskey is also a nice place for happy hour.
- 5/5
Very quiet, clean hotel, friendly staff. Excellent location.
- 5/5
The location was an easy walk to every destination I had to go to. I also enjoyed that my room had a nice balcony overlooking a little terrace that was calming. My shower was not completely clean when I checked in

Beautiful little spot in the gaslamp district in San Diego. Rooms were clean and well decorated/maintained. Front desk staff was very accomodating and kind. My only critique would be the AC was tough to get going, it's San Diego, not that horrible to deal with no AC, but the night got toasty. Would stay again!
- 5/5
Historic charm is amazing. Good bar, friendly staff. Concierge Victor was an awesome help. Great suggestions. Location is great for experiencing the Gaslamp area and all the great restaurants. Also walking distance from Petco Park. Pay parking lot 1/2 block away only $20/day.
- 5/5
This hotel was great! The location was perfect, especially the distance to Petco Park, fun restaurants and bars too.
- 3/5
It’s a very old hotel which is charming but badly needs a refresh. Beds were cheap and uncomfortable. Rooms were shabby. So many better choices downtown especially at $500+ a night.
- 4/5
parking was easy using their system Would be better to have electrical outlets on each side of the bed for CPAP

Was a great place to where our event is, a few minutes by foot. Great restaurants around the area as well.

Will stay here again.

Everything was wonderful.

My girlfriend was happy with her flowers

This is our second stay at the Horton Grand. The location is amazing to everything in downtown SD. Love the historic elements of this hotel. The staff is wonderful. A bit noisy at night, as we were in a room at the front of the hotel. Not the hotels fault, cars racing. Last stay we were in the back part of the hotel (street noise free).

Everything about the property exuded an appealing character. The bar was great. The vallet was great. The front desk staff was great. The room was as cozy as I could ask for.
- 2/5
The AC didn’t work either night. They claimed to have fixed it but did not. So woke up sweating both nights
- 5/5
Where do I begin?!? Such a beautiful hotel. Location was perfect. The staff (valet, receptionists, waitstaff at the adjoining Salt & Whiskey bar / restaurant) were friendly, welcoming, engaging, exemplary! BTW the drinks and food at Salt & Whiskey were excellent! Such lovely hotel decor. Comfortable, clean rooms. Nice amenities. I cannot fathom staying anywhere else on my next visit to downtown San Diego. The Horton Grand Hotel excels in the hospitality industry, hands down!
- 5/5
Todd offered many great selections/directions to food and attractions. Would love to visit here again.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and Vic was very personable and made sure we were having a great time. Very clean and well maintained.
- 4/5
Hotel is definitely showing its age.
- 4/5
Location, staff and walkable
- 4/5
Great location and friendly staff.
- 5/5
This hotel is The Best -- the rooms are clean, comfortable and incredibly charming. The hotel itself is very welcoming, has beautiful decor and details, wonderful atmosphere. Cant't say enough compliments for the staff - so lovely and helpful. We left something behind when we checked out, and they were so gracious and helpful for finding the item and helping us get it back. Amazing location too. 100% I'd stay here again and recommend it to others.
- 4.5/5
Great location right in the heart of San Diego, close to the Petco Park concert we were going to. Great room, very quiet, overlooking the VERY pretty courtyard in the middle of the property! Street parking and valet only, no standard parking at this property. This was no problem at the time/hour we went (Friday evening, paid street parking until 10:00pm, had lots of spaces open). Complimentary drink at their restaurant, we felt like this was the perfect location for our Petco Park show!

Love this place! The fireplace and the whole room was very nice. I will be coming back!
- 5/5
It’s giving Bridgerton!
- 4/5
Staff was great. Room was delightful except for bath which had a shower with lie pressure and non draining.
- 5/5
Great little hotel close to lots of restaurants.
- 5/5
Really fun, old place. Nicely refurbished rooms. Good location
- 4/5
Stuff was great except for the bartender and the adjoining restaurant he was awful, unwelcoming and rude
- 4/5
Pillows very uncomfortable and A/c extremely loud. The room would get either too warm or too cold.
- 4.5/5
Beautiful room and comfortable bed
- 4/5
Super nice stuff pretty neat and tidy felt safe. The only bummer is at $67 for valet parking only…
- 5/5
The hotel was great, very beautiful. The staff was excellent both at the hotel and the restaurant inside the hotel. The only negative I have is it can be loud in the early hours of the morning due to its proximity to the downtown area however that is no fault of the hotel. All in all I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Great location and friendly staff. Fun little bar area with tasty bites.
- 5/5
Loved this hotel! It felt like we were in new Orléans! You’re in the middle of everything. Super walkable and if not the metro is right there.
- 5/5
I enjoyed my stay at this very charming hotel. The staff was so friendly and helpful. My only suggestion is to have a small microwave in the room.
- 5/5
Spacious clean rooms
- 5/5
Loved location and the amazing nespresso coffee in our room.. staff was very helpful and gracious
- 5/5
Unique with a great location.
- 4/5
Cool historic hotel. Location was great. Courtyard was lovely. Didn't have central AC, just room AC, which was a bit loud, but not a huge deal.
- 5/5
Such an original, unique hotel. Right downtown, within walking distance to everything. Very clean, and all of the staff from check in to the valets so welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be going back.
- 2/5
Paid for a room with a balcony and city view. Didn't get one. Still waiting for a receipt that was supposed to be emailed after check out. Person at check in couldn't even tell us where to get a cup of coffee. Appreciated the bartender who was able to answer questions and knew something about the hotel. Good location. That's about it.
- 4/5
Quaint historic hotel in the Gaslamp District. Very nice. Great location.
- 4/5
The Hotel was pretty clean, the outside patio could’ve been cleaner but other than that everything was nice
- 4/5
Close to many restaurants and entertainment. Walking distance to water front and Seaport Village shops. We like the historic hotel and have stayed several times.
- 3/5
Additionally, some loud sounds were prevalent the entire night. Sounds of a running toilet happened all night. Add some mechanical continuous low thumping noise was tough to ignore. I’ll be looking for options on my next visit.
- 5/5
I’ve the old building esthetics. Enjoyed the two drive vouchers salt the bar onsite. Recommend. Would stay again.
- 4/5
Loved the hotel. We stayed for 2 nights. Very good location.
- 5/5
Staff are polite, knowledgeable
- 5/5

- 5/5
Fabulous food and parking options within a short walk of the hotel.
- 5/5
Gorgeous bar, incredible staff.
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
Classically elegant lobby bar area, lots of light. Modernized rooms, great location, reasonably priced. A solid value in the heart of The Gaslamp Quarter.
- 3/5
There was a deal on the room price, which was why we chose to stay there, but it was balanced out by the $62 per night valet charge.
- 5/5
Gorgeous hotel! Get the balcony, it’s really worth the fresh air and greenery below
- 5/5
This is a renovated old hotel , full of charms, but very functional and in a great location. Ideal for couples.
- 5/5
Excellent location! Property was beautiful and well staffed.
- 5/5
Our stay was fantastic! Immediately after arrival, the valet employees were extremely welcoming and friendly. The front desk staff even upgraded our room because it was my wife's birthday! The room was very clean and comfortable. The attached restaurant/bar was also very nice. Highly recommend the Horton to anyone wanting a spot in the gaslamp quarter!
- 5/5
Ejoyed my stay here! It's a fun, historical and slightly quirky place to stay in a great, walkable location. I found the staff to be 10/10 - so hospitable and fun. They want you to enjoy the hotel, the history and the space.
- 4/5
Great location, cool historic vibe, overall a good value considering the location!
- 4/5
The staff were super helpful and very friendly. The location was excellent, we were there to attend the conference centra and it was such an easy walk and close to great bars and restaurants. The hotel is an old building, and with that comes a slightly older experience in the rooms, this did not bother me but it might not be suited to everyone.
- 4/5
the whiskey bar selection was oustanding . As was the location
- 4/5
For travelers who appreciate history and atmosphere over modern minimalism, the Horton Grand delivers something increasingly rare: a hotel with a genuine soul. The Victorian architecture and in-room fireplaces aren't decorative afterthoughts — they're the whole point, and the building wears its storied past with quiet confidence. The staff set the tone from the moment you arrive. Warm, attentive, and unhurried, they have the kind of hospitality that feels personal rather than scripted. The inner courtyard is a particular highlight — a serene, tucked-away retreat that makes it easy to forget you're steps from the bustle of the Gaslamp Quarter. And that location is worth emphasizing: walkable to some of San Diego's best dining and nightlife, yet the hotel itself remains surprisingly peaceful. The Gaslamp has a different personality early in the morning — unhurried and almost cinematic — and the Horton Grand is perfectly positioned to enjoy both sides of it. If you're looking for a place that tells a story, this is it.
- 5/5
Comfortable hotel in a great location. Plenty of walkable locations for meals. Hotel check in was quick and very nice to receive 2 free drink coupons and 20% off food at the adjacent restaurant, good food and atmosphere. Rooms were neat and very clean and comfortable. Would stay here again.
- 5/5
It was clean, quiet and I would recommend the hotel
- 5/5
Staff was friendly
- 5/5
Very helpful staff, GREAT LOCATION, classic building, the shower was easy to operate, quiet, good bar with drink coupons upon checking in, Cafe 222 right down the street is a fantastic breakfast spot, Lou & Mikey’s restaurant is a couple of blocks away, great food for dinner.
- 5/5
Property was great. Close to everything downtown
- 3/5
The rooms can be noisy. You could hear people walking upstairs all night. The floors squeak.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, fantastic location walkable and safe, incredibly friendly staff. 100% will be back.
- 4/5
Nice staff, cool bar, spacious suite. Great stay!

- 5/5
Loved the history of the hotel and the convenient location to restaurants and other activities.
- 5/5
Great stay in a lively area of San Diego. A historical building and very nice inside! I would stay again here
- 5/5
Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful old hotel. The doors were a bit tricky because they were old but that is the only complaint and a very minor one. Will definitely look forward to staying here again. Overall five stars!
- 5/5
The Horton Grand is my favorite hotel when I come to San Diego - it is close to the water and the many restaurants and has a nicer, more homey vibe than a standard big hotel. The courtyard area is a great respite from the city.
- 5/5
And it’s just an over a blck from the children’s park and waterfront! We hope to return soon.
- 4/5
The gym is small. My shower was difficukt to operate, but the building and rooms were lovely.
- 2/5
The attached bar is comfortable and has decent food. The beds are comfortable. Unfortunately, all of this charm is negated by the Management's complete disregard for hospitality The second night they had a wedding booked in the courtyard. The wedding was so loud that the floor was shaking in my room on the 4tg floor. It was so loud that I couldn't hear what was playing through my noise canceling headphones over the constant bass-thump and the over-modulated squawking of the MC. I've spent my share of time blowing out my eardrums in front of the stacks, so I'm not the type to be overly sensitive to loud music and people having a good time. What ruined this experience was the fact that the hotel management could have easily made advance mentioned this and let everyone know that the wedding was happening, what time it would be done, and that they understood the inconvenience. Instead they didn't even respond the same day to questions about what the hell was going and when it would end. It's such a shame to see a beautiful property like this mishandled in this way. As a hospitality professionalyawld, let me tell you: simply communicating with your guests proacively solves the problem. Offering apologies after the fact doesn't do anything to change the actual guest experience. Handling it the way they did reveals this company's lack of concern for genuine hospitality. Very disappointing.
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly.
- 3/5
Did t park. Area is run down and lots of homeless people. A short walk and your in a nice area.

- 3.5/5
The uniqueness of the hotel No breakfast Not even coffee was available
- 5/5
The staff was friendly and helpful, able to accommodate an early check in. Nice room, loved the balcony! Pre game smacks and drinks, fantastic!
- 5/5
Characterful building. Old world charm
- 5/5
Friendly staff and a great location.
- 4/5
Excellent location. Glad that I stayed here. Love the balcony.
- 3/5
Great location, nice courtyard. The rooms have no closet, just an armoire. NO storage or counter in the bathroom, literally no space for your toothbrush or toiletries. I will not return
- 5/5
It was a great location. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The hotel itself has a lot of charm and great ambiance. My family and I would recommend and stay here again.
- 5/5
Staff were very attentive and professional. We received an upgrade to a nice suite, early checkin and late checkouts!
- 5/5
I stayed here for a convention and loved being away from the typical convention hotels. The room was great and the small balcony was so nice. The building is older and I appreciate the charm. The pictures are accurate, the staff was friendly. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. I would stay here again if i came back for another conference.
- 5/5
Only note is that that the walls are a little thin, but to be fair that's just part of being an older building.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel! A little piece of Nee Orleans right in the Gas Lamp district.
- 5/5
Historic hotel with modern-day amenities. Super quiet. In the gaslamp district. Staff was so friendly. Room clean. Love the historic look. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
We loved our stay at The Horton Grand. It is a beautiful property and everyone was so nice and helpful. The location is great with a lot of fun things to check out nearby. Would love to stay here again.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel within walking distance to conference center in 5 minutes and right in the Gaslamp district. Beautiful bar attatched to hotel. The center, outdoor room was a bonus to drink coffee, get work down or just have down time. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. They have recommendations for breakfast and coffee which were WINS! I would stay here again for sure.
- 5/5
Beautiful old building. Staff is nice and very helpful.

Great Value in Historic Property in Great Location. The Staff is very helpful, particularly Vic
- 4/5
The hotel is perfectly located downtown. Unfortunately, the AC in our room did not work, and maintenance was unable to fix it during our stay. The room stayed close to 80° the entire time. The staff was kind and did reduce our bill slightly, but the issue still impacted our overall experience.
- 4/5
We didn't use laundry svs. Room could use updates. Shower was awful; very little hot water and very slow water for shower. Other than that the staff was GREAT!

Great location.

Very old and beautiful hotel I loved the vibe in it … it’s definitely an old hotel but as clean as it can be
- 5/5
The staff were great and the room was amazing we will be coming back to this hotel.
- 5/5
Room was spotless. The patio was an amazing experience of a different time. Definitely coming back!!

Good location. Comfortable rooms.

Amazing!
- 5/5
Great room and view. Staff was friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Service was great. Very friendly staff. We enjoyed chatting with Victor. Great hotel we will definitely come back.
- 5/5
What a gem! Great staff, from Thomas the bellboy to front desk to cleaning crew. Excellent location in the Gas Light district and 5 min walk to the convention center. Rooms are cozy and clean, with great and comfortable beds and pillows. Highly recommended!
- 5/5
This is a great hotel! Tons of character, rooms are comfortable, staff is great. The bar/restaurant is part of the building and is really nice as well. And you're in the heart of it all in San Diego. I'd come back here every time.

Clean and staff was very polite.

Beautiful facade and interior staircase. Room was fine. Clean and cozy.

everything was great except steak was awful at dinner. Burnt on one side hard to eat.
- 5/5
Clean room!! Great staff!! Wonderful location!! Had a wonderful and fun weekend!!
- 5/5
Everything exceeded our expectations! The room, staff, location, bar and the historical charm of the hotel was just what we needed.
- 5/5
Everything about this hotel was amazing!
- 5/5
Absolutely loved this hotel. My husband and I went for a Valentine’s Day weekend and we absolutely loved the location, the room and the staff. All of the staff were extremely nice and helpful. The rooms weren’t at all super modern but it didn’t matter, the vintage feel was just as good.
- 5/5
Beautiful property with old world charm. Friendly staff and room was comfortable and clean. Plenty of cute spots for pictures on the property. Location was great for walking to shops and restaurants. Thank you, great overall experience.
- 4/5
Staff was fabulous. Room was clean. The room was not a balcony room tho, which I thought I had registered for. We were on the first floor and it was noisy due to nighttime traffic in the Gaslamp district. The room was comfortable, as was the bed. Nice shower and soaps, etc. Great pillows!! The sheets were old, not real fresh smelling and the bed sheets had tiny little balls of worn fabric threads, the type that form when the sheets are really old. We appreciated the 2 free beverages in the bar upon our arrival.Valet was full when we got there, so my husband ended up parking several blocks away. But, like I said, the staff was very kind and delightful to speak with. Would stay again, I think, but only if it’s on a second or third floor!

Great hotel!
- 4/5
I loved the historic charm, however there were several things that really needed to be updated. There is a difference between historic charm and old/falling apart. I would suggest making sure that things are still well-maintained.
- 3/5
Great location for bars, restaurants and nightlife. Nice easy walk to gorgeous seafront too. However this is a hotel relying on its former glory - feels unloved and in need of tlc. A bar that closes at 10pm, no breakfast option - not even a coffee during the day. Staff pleasant enough - usually - but watched us load our bags onto trolley and drag via lift to room with no offer to help. No one obvious in charge. A shame - it could be so much better with very little extra effort.
- 5/5
Great hotel and wonderful location in Downtown!
- 5/5
This was such a cute/beautiful hotel! The room was extremely spacious and well equipped. I would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The room was amazing and the balcony was so peaceful
- 5/5
Great place to say
- 5/5
Very quaint old hotel with nice rooms and courteous staff
- 5/5
The location is terrific, rooms are charming and clean, fireplace worked well and staff was, without exception, friendly and helpful
- 5/5
Great location, suite was nice! We had a wonderful stay…
- 5/5
Staff, accommodations, and location were ideal.
- 5/5
Excellent value and very comfortable stay.
- 5/5
Staff is friendly and helpful: they changed my room reservation to a bigger one that would let my family join for a few days. Definitely clean in an historic hotel kind of way: they pick interesting furniture that’s not easy to clean but somehow keep it clean. One of the elevators has dioramas on the 3rd and 4th floors. Loved that! The inner courtyard was a good place to read.

Excellent staff. Everyone super friendly and helpful. Enjoyed talking about travel with Robert.

This is the only hotel we stay at when we come to San Diego. It’s historic, has the coolest vibe ever, is always spotless, and the staff is consistently friendly and welcoming.

It’s always a pleasure to stay at the Grand Horton
- 3/5
The price was affordable but you get what you pay for! Staff were friendly and the property is like a museum which is neat. The room was clean but smelled very strong in an old way. The bed was super worn out. The listing said city view, but it was a brick wall/alleyway. There was no fridge which was hard for 6 days. Water bottles were $5 each which wasn’t made clear at first. The area is very central. Overall okay. Maybe not all the rooms are like this.
- 5/5
Rooms were large and comfortable. Front desk staff and parking valets were hospitable and professional. Location is excellent. Everything was very clean. Would define stay here again!

- 5/5
Historic and unique accommodation with balcony and a quiet internal courtyard with trees. Clean, comfy bedding. Friendly and helpful staff. There was a resort fee that I hadn’t anticipated but it came with a free drink at the bar at least.
- 5/5
Older hotel with a lot of history to be told, spotless lobby, was very well kept. We stayed in a balcony suite, bed was comfortable, room was cozy, air conditioning worked amazingly well. Only thing was the bathroom was a little outdated, no harm no foul though. It is in the heart of the Gas Lamp District, expect outside noise, sirens, garbage trucks, etc. We will be back! Thank you again for the hospitality!
- 5/5
Great room. Quaint, nostalgic and vintage hotel that is relaxing and a real gem.
- 4/5
The room was clean, the beds were so comfortable with great pillows. Really liked the little balconies. The staff was kind and friendly and let us check in a little early. The only thing that needs attention is just the common areas around check in, they seem a little rundown and could use a good clean, everything else was wonderful.
- 3/5
The rooms are very noisy with multiple fans and ticks running through the walls and when the fan is running. We needed to use ear plugs to sleep.Hotel looks very vintage and neat, very clean throughout, just really hard to sleep with the noises from inside the room.
- 4.5/5
I liked the location and the history of it. I don’t feel like anyone went out of their way to make it a great stay. It was a place to sleep.
- 4/5
We left for the airport at 6AM. The shower was somewhat difficult to place on the correct temperature.
- 4/5
Staff not very helpful. Lady at front desk seemed to be preoccupied on her phone. She was pleasant,. We received a free drink at the bar. Our last night at the hotel we went down to the bar at 10:15. The bartender who was very rude said. "Nope we are closed, we closed at 10." My husband said, "oh can you make an exception, it's our last night here.? Bartender replied "No can't do that". Thought he was very rude and abrupt with us. Considering we were guests and not someone who stopped in off the street. We entered the bar from the stairs.
- 5/5
Location is very close to the Hoppin office to restaurants to Petco Stadium and the conference center. The building is beautiful with a lovely lovely courtyard.
- 5/5
Staff was welcoming and friendly (especially the valet staff member, Robert), great service, clean room, and the location of the hotel was good.
- 1/5
There was nothing I liked about this hotel. I would never stay here again. The Horton grand Hotel needs to work on their customer service. The. Worker at front desk was extremely condescending and rude. Every time we walked into the room, there was a stench of animal feces by the front door. There was quite a bit of trash under the bed. There were two press on nails stuck to the phone cord. You could hear where the people on the floor above you were walking. The bathroom door would stick so bad that you would have to give it a good shoulder push to get out. This place is gross. I would never stay here again.
- 5/5
Enjoyed the historic Hotel. Very fun experience 😊
- 5/5
Cool location, building and history. If you want a quiet sleep ask for a room not facing the front street or near the bar. But other than noise from environments the hotel can’t control, my stay was courteous and wonderful. I used the front desk, bar, and valet, and every person was friendly and did their job exceptionally well. Thank you for the wonderful stay!
- 5/5
Perfect.
- 3/5
This is a prince and the pauper review. The prince would say that the lobby was beautiful and the check-in process was smooth; the furnishings were lovely and everything was clean; BUT for the price, I would have expected excellent coffee instead of Folgers, a shower cap, a shelf to put toiletries, a softer pillow, earplugs because the outside noise was horrendous until 2 AM; writing paper and a pen; a clock that works; and toilet paper/tissue paper that isn’t like sandpaper. The pauper would say: how nice to sleep in a comfortable bed instead of the street and have a warm shower with fresh towels and soap. Both of them would say, five dollars for a bottle of water? That’s not very hospitable!

Best spot to stay in if you’re in San Diego. Building is historical and they even have some displays while you take the elevator and a very calming plaza next to the bar.
- 5/5
Very Beautiful and charming hotel . Very strategically located . Staff was extremely helpful .
- 4/5
Very clean, well appointed Rooms a little dark, not enough bright light options
- 5/5
Staff was fantastic!!!!! Room was charming and perfect location for my event! Thank you!
- 4/5
Classic hotel with a lot of character. Clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
We've stayed here twice. Hotel is very charming and clean. Easy walk to anywhere in gaslamp
- 3/5
Todd at the valet was great. I was there for a convention and the parking was a concern. At $62/night you would think maybe you can keep it parked for the next day until the afternoon, but rates reset at 11am. After asking for guidance the front desk told me they had no idea and was not helpful. Turns out there was a public parking $10 for 12 hours two blocks away. The room was cold. I had turned the heater on but it had problems going above 70 and the comforter was very thin. The toilet seat would come off if I wasn’t careful. The towels were clean and the room was clean but these inconveniences didn’t help with getting a restful sleep. I understand the challenges of an older hotel but the gap between photo and reality was pretty significant for this one. I hope they find budget to renovate as the location is great and it has potential.
- 5/5
Thanks for the stay. Mary
- 5/5
Staff was great! Loved the atmosphere. My fave hotel in SD.
- 4/5
Clean room and great staff
- 5/5
I especially enjoyed the architecture and history of the building itself that's what attracted me to this hotel and also it's location. The gaslamp district was beautiful with so much around to do. Balboa, the convention center, ocean beach, Del Mar. The restaurants not only in the gaslamp area but the salt and whisky restaurant attached to the hotel was beautiful and intimate. We went for a short weekend stay 1/9 - 1/11 it was for my birthday. Upon check in we received two complimentary drinks from the hotel restaurant. They have valet only but for a short stay the overnight parking is definitely worth it. You get in and out privilege you wouldn't get from a public garage, thank you to Victor and his staff for being so helpful and welcoming when we arrived. They gave us everything we needed for a smooth check in. This hotel did the one thing most don't when I book on this site. They added in the security fee so I knew right away what I was being charged at check in. Thank you to Aditch the front desk clerk, for being so informative, friendly and professional. I loved everything about my trip and the hotel really made it one of a kind and special.
- 4/5
Quaint interior of an old restored historic hotel, we were on a balcony facing the inner courtyard. Room was super clean. Bed extremely comfortable. Bar had good service and drinks for casual meetings. No breakfast service and valet parking (the only option unless you walk to an open lot a couple of blocks away) is too pricey. We chose to park off site two blocks away in an open air lot. Only bad thing would be if you were caught in the rain. Fortunately its San Diego and dry most of the time.
- 3/5
The employees were great. The room was very aged with a few things broken or not working. Definitely not worth the price charged.
- 5/5
I will likely stay here again. Lived an in room fireplace
- 5/5
Great service and place was impeccable! Thank you!
- 5/5
Place is awesome lovely and classical rooms. Suggestion if you stay here get one with a balcony. ❤️❤️
- 1/5
Specifically booked the premium suit for the balcony overlooking the quart yard. We were giving a city view room instead and the balcony was about 1 foot wide and 3 feet long. You could barely fit 1 person at a time. The room also looked nothing like the photos. It felt like walking into an empty apartment with no windows. I booked this room for a special occasion and was severely disappointed. The hotel is beautiful on the outside but inside the room it felt like a motel 6.
- 5/5
The room was very clean, and larger than expected. I was expecting a king bed, but it was only a queen.
- 5/5
Perfect location and style was adorable. Only valet parking for a charge
- 5/5
Spotless room. Easy access to the Gaslight District, up and coming.
- 5/5
Everything! Everything was good
- 3.5/5
The location is fantastic if you want to enjoy Gaslamp, Petco Park, or the Convention Center, The hotel has definitely seen better days. Old carpets, old furnishings, faded banisters, fixtures in the bathroom literally dangling off the wall. With a bit of TLC and restoration this hotel could be absolutely gorgeous.I don't mean modernized either. Just restore is beautiful charm. Also, there isn't private parking as listed. Valet only. $60 a day
- 5/5
We stay in this hotel several times throughout the year. Staff is always friendly and rooms are spotless.
- 5/5
Excellent location, salt & whiskey restaurant is a must stop. Balcony is a nice touch but too small to enjoy a pour!!
- 4/5
Great customer service. Room was ready and clean early. The location was great! Loves that we were able to travel with our dog! Room was a bit small and pretty old. It was a little noisy as well, it seemed like we could hear our upstairs neighbors walking around at all hours of the night. And wasn’t a huge fan of maid service coming to clean our room at 8:45 am.
- 2/5
So noisy can hear everything next and above you. Fire place did not work.
- 5/5
Excellent Staff
- 4/5
I think it’s overpriced like crazy plus you need to tip the valet,
- 3.5/5
Felt very luxurious States that parking was available but it was only valet. ($62)
- 5/5
Everything was amazing
- 4/5
Very nice stay! Check in was smooth and I was given a room upgrade. It was very unexpected, but much appreciated. I didn't give five stars because the hotel is indeed haunted.
- 5/5
Ambience was amazing
- 3/5
Nice old hotel in a great location. Breakfast is available nearby, but not in hotel. The fireplace was need and nice touch.
- 5/5
Wonderful room.. Great ambiance and well within walking distance of restaraunts and sights. The valet/doorman was wonderful and gave us a great history of the hotel.
- 5/5
The toilet made a loud noise when flushed and hair dryer did not work.
- 4/5
Booked a 2 queen room but was given a king. We made do.
- 5/5
Staff was amazing
- 3/5
Courtyard view was nice and balcony was a pleasant break from the small room. Amenities were akin to a 2-Star motel: in-room soap and coffee was very poor quality, it was a waste of money to even provide them… also $27 resort fee includes two bottles of water- but not the standard 12-16oz, they provided only the small 2-sip bottles. Restaurant attached looked cool, but hours are inconvenient, so we couldn’t visit it. We stayed here solely bc of the fireplace in room, and ours didn’t work. I will say the housekeeping is excellent- we left something in room and they came to find us at the car to give it to us! The hotels history is cool, but could benefit from more conveniences- drinks/snacks for purchase at the checkin counter or a vending machine at the least, or some coffee in the lobby. And find a way to make sure the fireplace works or is serviceable at night.
- 5/5
Cozy and close to everything!
- 3/5
The balcony was facing the wall of another building, the fireplace didn’t work, someone had to come light it, the bed was concave. The room was spacious and the hotel was beautiful.
- 4/5
Clean room and kind staff.
- 4/5
The hotel was great and in a great location to walk to many restaurants and great neighborhood spots. The staff was excellent and the rooms were really nice. Note the one issue we had was, because we were facing a popular intersection it was very loud outside on weekend nights all through the night. The staff was very accommodating and relocated us without any trouble to a quieter room. Just keep in mind if you are staying over a weekend night you may want an interior room to keep the noise out at night.
- 5/5
Beautiful building and we loved the balcony. The history behind the building is cool. Staff were wonderful and we had a great stay!
- 4/5
Cool place
- 2/5
our room#406 had a bad odor of gas and in the evening we were relocated to room 409.It eas not only inconvenient but my wife had to go outside the room to get some fresh air. Not a good experience!
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, far surpasses any expectation of an older Victorian hotel. I highly recommend this stay!
- 5/5
Absolutely spectacular service and stand out hotel. Front desk was wonderful and helpful. BEAUTIFUL Victorian accents which adds so much character to your stay 10/10 highly recommend!
- 5/5
Our favorite place to stay when we visit san diego. Close to everything but still very private and quiet. Love the vibes here
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel. The only part that was not excellent was that the bathroom did not have sufficient light. Hard to see to shave or do makeup.
- 4/5
Balcony view of street and other buildings. Bed too high and not in position to see/enjoy fireplace. There was a “bridge” walkway between buildings that required walking in uncovered area. Website stated restaurant and happy hour available daily. Thursday night upon arrival it was closed.
- 5/5
We had an amazing experience from the moment we got there! The front desk recepcionist, (maybe her name was Addy?) upgraded us to an AMAZING suite and we were so impressed. Mr. Ivy gave us several recommendations in the area, too. We will definitely stay here again when in San Diego!
- 4/5
The room was clean. They let us check in early. The only negative was the restaurant was closed.
- 5/5
Horton Grand is surrounded by a plethora of walkable fine eateries, shopping and entertainment venues in the famous Gaslamp Quarter. The beach is a few blocks, the airport is 10 - 15 minutes max. The hotel staff is attentive and friendly. My stay was a memorable experience.
- 5/5
The room was fantastic and clean, the staff was friendly and helpful but the balcony overlooked an alley and a wall so that was a little disappointing.
- 5/5
Clean, nice staff, and in the heart of Downtown San Diego. The location is classy and offers large rooms for a fair price.
- 5/5
What a charming hotel. Historical. Wonderfully located, great staff, clean, good amenities. Great kitchenette, lots of space. Walkable to most places. Loved….
- 1/5
We never checked in. Our reservations were canceled. Why am I getting an email now asking us if we enjoyed our stay?
- 4/5
The room was amazing. Very clean! The bed was so comfortable. Unfortunately, our shower did not work. It would not pressurize. So we moved rooms. That shower did work but the bed was inverted. With one more room change, they nailed it! Great experience. That is why I only gave four stars. The bar Salt and Whiskey is also great! Enjoy!
- 5/5
good
- 5/5
The facility is amazing- tons of history and architectural stunning detail. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The location is great right in the heart of the Gaslamp District. The hotel room itself we stayed in was a little dated and in need of a 're-fresh' (not sure if other rooms or other areas of the hotel are as dated). However, I would definitely stay here again and will likely be my go to the next time I'm in San Diego.
- 5/5
Enjoyable stay at the Horton grand. Great location in the Gas Lamp district. 5 min walk to convention center as well as numerous places to eat and enjoy. Would highly recommend and will stay there on my next visit to San Diego. I didn't eat in the Hotel so cannot rate that.
- 5/5
Great location, next to the gaslamp district and across the street from the conference center and the waterfront. The loft rooms are nicely decorated and spacious. Great breakfast at the restaurant.
- 5/5
Had a view and balcony was nice. i enjoyed sitting out in sunlight in am. Bar was nice and food good
- 5/5
Excellent property - will definitely return to the Horton on my next trip
- 3/5
Older hotel , no view rooms , destination charges added for additional night added , paper thin walls
- 5/5
Friendly staff at check in. Room was very nice! Close walking distance to the conversation center and Petco Park. Plenty of restaurants near by.
- 5/5
Was wonderful room nice and big , bed was great. Nice and quiet but close to everything. Wife was very happy will be back again..
- 3/5
The hotel itself was incredibly beautiful. I was very underwhelmed with the room and amenities. The shower was awful. Barely a trickle of pressure and hot water was short lived. The fireplace was a disappointment as well because I was looking forward to having a lovely fire but instead, it was a nightlight. Very mediocre toiletries. Again, BEAUTIFUL hotel and bar, but room left lots to be desired.
- 5/5
Clean facilities and friendly staff!
- 5/5
Historic hotel in great location, friendly staff, got a room upgrade with blacony, walking distance to main Gaslight District. Beautiful property, quiet with nice rooms and dreamy beds.
- 3/5
Thin walls. Could hear my neighbor screaming at their kids.
- 5/5
I loved this boutique hotel. The price point was great for the location to Petco Park. We were able to check in early which made the day way easier and having valet parking was super convenient. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel. Came into town for an event at petco park. Was perfectly located. Hotel was immaculate and beautiful. It was also a great value. I got a suite with a balcony for the cost of a tiny basic room at a big chain hotel.
- 5/5
The location , history of the place , and friendly staff.
- 5/5
Great Room. Charming Historic Hotel in a great walkable location.
- 1/5
Valet is $59 and when you book they don’t tell you about the resort fees. Got woken up at 330 in the morning by people fighting in the hallway. Didn’t fall asleep until 530 again. Would not recommend staying here solely based on the hidden resort fee not disclosed and add to that the lack of sleep after paying $160. No ty. There wasn’t even an offer to correct it.
- 5/5
Good location close to restaurants, nice to have valet parking.
- 5/5
Clean room, almost everything to walk to, recommended and will booked again.
- 4/5
The staff was great. Had a premier suite and it was nicely appointed and larger than expected. Bed was comfortable, but pullout was not. Actually terrible for any adult. Convenient location, pretty lobby. Fancy coffee in room and good shampoo and body wash in shower. Creaky floors mean lots of overhead noise when people are walking around.
- 4/5
Hard to find parking so maybe get the valet service. Offered two drinks when checking in. Checking in was with ease and room was clean and bed was comfy. Coffee maker in room but need to pay for water so bring your own. Not much channels to watch. It's close to many places to eat and drink
- 5/5
Amazing place to stay at.

This place was great and walkable to restaurants and the concert venue.

The property was fantastic! The staff were amazing. The room was great. The location was dynamite! So good!
- 5/5
Staff great. Historically very Interesting
- 5/5
Everything was great. We stay here often and really like that it is walking distance to restaurants and shopping. The hotel is always clean and the staff are very friendly.
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Comfy bed, close to Gaslamp district and quiet room.
- 5/5
The staff at the hotel were so amazing! Super Friendly and helpful. The Whiskey and Salt bar had a great vibe and bartenders. Wide variety of whiskey if that’s your thing. Rooms were clean and a nice change from generic chain hotels. I would definitely return.
- 3/5
Also, I originally made dinner reservations at the hotel restaurant “Salt & Whiskey”, but when we stopped by to have our complimentary cocktail during happy hour, we noticed it was pretty chilly and asked if they could turn on the fireplace, but they said it wasn’t working, so I asked if they could turn up the heat, but they said it’s pretty hard to keep warm with all the large windows. We also noticed that the piano that I saw in online pics was pushed back in a corner so I asked if there would be music later for dinner but they said they don’t usually have the piano/music during “off-season”, so for all of these reasons, I cancelled our dinner rez there and we went somewhere else, since it didn’t have the ambience I was expecting.

Great accommodations. Lower rating because the delivery trucks arrived at 4am each morning right outside our qibdow!!

Good vintage style hotel

Staff was great! This place is a gem and close to the gaslamp and Petco park,
- 5/5
very cool vibe
- 5/5
Always love this place. Was sad that roger in room 309 didnt want to come out and play on Halloween but he was probably just shy haha
- 5/5
Very courteous staff
- 4/5
The stay overall was great, the room was spacious and clean. The staff was absolutely wonderful, Robert the valet was a gem as well as Patricia who was at the front desk to check us in. They also let us stay an extra hour which we greatly appreciated. Only a couple of things i wanted to note was that the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash wasn't restocked and we were only there for the night. The balcony was extremely small but other than that I would stay again. 4.5 stars out of 5 :)

- 5/5
Beautiful room with balcony overlooking the interior, courtyard. Third floor puts you a tree level - really lovely and no traffic noise. Restaurant only open for dinner, but everything I tried was great, and the service as well.
- 5/5
Staff were excellent. Hotel was clean and charming. Great location.
- 5/5
Great location in Gas Lamp
- 4/5
When we checked in, we were informed of a wedding that would be in the main courtyard on the second evening of our 2-day booking. We could not have canceled or changed our reservation at this time without losing money, so we just proceeded. The wedding was very loud. We could not enjoy the room at all, couldn't relax, couldn't watch TV. We wished the staff had thought ahead and either offered us a different room, or offered a free cancellation. Both the wedding and our reservation were booked well in advance. The front staff did offer to compensate our valet parking fee; we are still waiting for that refund.
- 5/5
Very nice comfortable room, excellent customer service, very nice decor, and very clean.

Bed was harder than we prefer but others might like that. Staff was very nice snd helpful.
- 5/5
Staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating on my stay.
- 5/5
Front desk was very accommodating, and gave a free upgrade for our wedding night. A staff member with red hair gave us her Bobby pin when the brides hair started to fall apart. Really appreciate both of them.
- 5/5
Balcony was super tiny, I was shocked by that but ultimately that didn’t matter and the entire stay was wonderful. I do wish there were better parking options as $60 valet did put a crunch on the budget. The staff was absolutely amazing and I would stay here again happily!

We enjoyed our one day stay for our anniversary. The Hotel has great history. Staff was nice and helpful. Nice view from the balcony.
- 5/5
Room was clean and beautiful, staff was friendly and gave us 2 free drink tickets, we had a fireplace, city view, and balcony, and we were a 5-minute walk from Petco Park. We will definitely be back!
- 5/5
The room was comfortable, clean and we loved the balcony. We will certainly stay again next time we are in the city.
- 2/5
Very disappointing for the price. Rooms are old with only one outlet in the room so charging your phone was a struggle. No amenities at all like water or coffee and no restaurant onsite just a bar that didn’t open until 4 pm. For the cost we could have stayed at a Hilton or similar. Will not stay here again
- 5/5
we had a nice living room on the 4th floor and used it for a while and had dinner at the salt and whiskey after a very good free Margarita
- 5/5
Clean
- 3/5
Paid for city view, had view of service alley. Sound carries, you can hear everything. I know it's an old building but maybe enforce quiet hours if you know your building isn't going to give people a good night's sleep
- 5/5
Beautiful, classic place. Great restaurant/bar downstairs. CVS and 7/11 a hundred yards or so away, lot of restaurants/bars/places to sit outside. Definitely my favorite in San Diego.
- 5/5
Such a beautiful hotel. So much history, if you stay here, make sure you read about their history on the website. We chose this place for a last minute one night, romantic getaway. It did not disappoint. We were able to walk to Seaport Village and to the Gaslamp district. Everything was so close.
- 1/5
Room next to ours had the window broken the first day we were there. Moved hotels that night. Traffic was very loud and AC was louder.
- 4/5
Water pressure was a little low but everything else was great
- 5/5
Great location, great staff. The hotel is old, which we loved. Highly recommended.
- 5/5
Very nice location and rooms.
- 3/5
The stay was okay, roomed seemed smaller than the photos. It was very loud outside even into the late hours. Every flush of the toilet was a very loud noise! Wish we had a better experience.
- 3/5
Parking was a problem
- 5/5
The Horton Grand is a unique and gorgeous hotel, and we have stayed here before. We were disappointed that they no longer have breakfast available or do High Tea, which they were famous for, but neither was a huge issue. Everything about our family's 4-day stay in four rooms was lovely. However, we were definitely annoyed that on top of all the other numerous changes, we were charged an additional $27.83/day for Wifi. Seriously??? This the 21st century and free Wifi is the standard. Plus, this is definitely not an inexpensive hotel. They tried to make it not seem so ridiculous by giving us a bottle of water and two drink vouchers (only once, not very day). This pettiness clouded an otherwise perfect stay for my daughter's wedding (not at the hotel).
- 5/5
Hidden gem. Reasonably priced. Good location. Friendly staff.
- 4/5
Is older but I did love the antiques around. Service was nice. Some amenities were missing. But for business travel, it was great!
- 4/5
Small, clean rooms, but not very soundproof.
- 5/5
The staff was fantastic. Very kind and helpful
- 5/5
Gorgeous property, great upkeep especially as it is a historic building.
- 5/5
A lot of history in this hotel. Very vintage in an awesome way
- 5/5
Safe, great location, friendly, staff.
- 3/5
Rented 2 rooms. One of the rooms used a temporary HVAC unit that was noisy. The other room did not have a functioning fireplace.
- 5/5
Great customer service and location.
- 3/5
Small room - comfortable bed. Bathroom inconvenient no counter poorly located outlets a/c not working it they fixed
- 5/5
I’m obsessed with this place. It’s beautiful on the inside, the rooms were clean and spacious, staff was amazing- so friendly, I will absolutely stay here again.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, great location, wonderful staff.
- 4/5
Staff was nice and friendly. The bathroom had a moldy smell but it is an old building so that might be hard to remedy. Would have liked to have had another mirror in the room as the bathroom was small.
- 5/5
Staff was great got free drinks everyone was friendly check-in was fast
- 5/5
Great location and friendly staff
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly, kind and knowledgeable. The location is ideal walking distance to the gaslamp district one problem with the hotel. I stayed on the second floor and the guest above me every time they walk I could hear it outside of that. I love the property I would definitely recommend it
- 5/5
Such a wonderful property, gives off old New Orleans vibes. The establishment is very well kept and their salt and whiskey restaurant is amazing. I used the complimentary drinks for 2 and their old fashion was perfectly made. Order their burger ans fries and my goodness it was delicious. The room was super clean, comfortable bed with a view. Highly recommend and will be staying in the future.. added plus it’s right on gas lamp, walking distance from everything yet you don’t hear the noice from outside
- 5/5
This hotel is a hidden gem. So much charm! Great value for the location!

- 4/5
First day our AC was not working. Overall good experience and stay!
- 4/5
Convenient, central location, walkable , historic property
- 5/5
Staff was great. Balcony was great. The staircase and courtyard looked awesome!
- 3/5
Main reason for the score is because the ac did not work. When I called the front desk. They weren’t helpful. I slept in a room with an 80 degree temperature. The gentlemen in the morning kindly waived a $27 fee for inconvenience but I believe they could’ve done more.
- 5/5
The front desk staff was always available and always willing and wanting to help with everything. They gave a drink coupon for the restaurant there. Everything was comfortable and the location is AMAZING - super close to the convention center, great restaurants, grocery store, etc.
- 5/5
Very quaint part of the Gaslamp area
- 5/5
Very nice boutique hotel. Room was clean and comfortable. Would consider staying here again!
- 5/5
The property is very nice and appealing has a little chill spot in the middle of the hotel bar is really nice staff is amazing
- 4/5
Nice place
- 5/5
Fun boutique hotel walking distance to every thing I needed.
- 5/5
Wish I knew it was a little outdated but other than that great hotel
- 5/5
Friendly staff
- 5/5
The room is larger than a studio apartment!! Clean and comfortable. There was an expresso maker in the room, but I asked if we could have a standard coffee maker instead. No problem. Walkable to many restaurants, and free drink coupons given to us. Staff very pleasant and helpful.
- 5/5
I ate at Salt & Whiskey both nights. Their Street Tacos were amazing!!
- 4/5
Good but the family vibe was so so
- 4/5
Great location and lovely staff.
- 5/5
Outstanding historic hotel
- 3/5
Seems like they are trying with this place but it’s old and kind of drab. Towels are the cheapest towels you can buy at Walmart. The photos online make it look way nicer than it is. They say they have a state of the art fitness facility but it’s on treadmill and one cable machine in a 10x10 room.
- 2/5
The hallways were stuffy with an overpowering odor, and our room was disappointing. The door handle stuck, the bed squeaked with a sunken mattress, and the bathroom had unfinished wall repairs. The shower had poor pressure, and the tub began flooding after a short use. When I requested a room change, I was told none were available due to a seminar. On the third day, housekeeping entered our room without knocking, which was completely unacceptable. While the location is excellent, the hidden fees, lack of upkeep, and disregard for guest privacy make this hotel hard to recommend. I would not return and cannot suggest it to others.
- 4/5
Pet friendly. Animals felt welcome.
- 5/5
Cute place in amazing part of the city - dated but in a good way. Clean and staff was solid.
- 5/5
It was a beautiful property that was in an ideal spot close to lots of fun places to visit and eat at. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I loved the in room fireplace. I wish the towels had been nicer though. Very rough on the skin. I had brought my own beach towel and used that instead. So bring your own towels.
- 5/5
Clean room, most of the staff was friendly. Very walkable area
- 5/5
We really enjoyed our stay at the Horton and the location was excellent! We also had a great meal at the adjoining Salt & Whiskey restaurant.
- 5/5
The history
- 4/5
Internet was fine. Hotel was good. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Quiet and clean
- 4/5
Very clean. Nostalgic decor.
- 4/5
An old school hotel with a lot of charm
- 5/5
balcony. The restaurant and bar were great and classic.
- 5/5
The staff was friendly and helpful. I arrived at midnight after a flight delay and to my delight, the lobby snackshop was open! I was able to have a bag of chips for dinner. I loved my room, it was beautifully appointed, it felt cozy and easy to settle into. All staff members, housekeeping, engineering etc were friendly, polite and efficient.
- 5/5
Friendly efficient staff. Easy check in, comfortable room. Two free bottles water, plus 2 free beers or wine.
- 5/5
Is a good placer to stay
- 3/5
I booked the hotel because it had character. However, it also had a smell, weird noises, and doors that stayed open to alleys 24/7. Unless you book a suite, the rooms are TINY. Two of us stayed in different rooms and both smelled awful.
- 5/5
Fab hotel, clean, great location and the most amazing bar.
- 5/5
Very comfortable. Big suite for family of four.
- 5/5
I had an amazing stay.It was a beautiful hotel in a great location and the staff was very friendly. They even accommodated early check in!
- 5/5
Very beautiful Hotel. Walking distance to a variety of restaurants.
- 5/5
Unique historical hotel. Carefully preserved antique furniture and memorabilia. You can feel yourself inside of Jane Austin novel. Very close to Convention Center and to restaurants of Gaslamp Quarter.
- 5/5
Clean room and wonderful staff. Victor was fabulous. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
I wasn’t sure what to expect but we loved our stay! Clean and the rooms are updated. I’d definitely stay again!
- 4/5
We loved the room, the beauty of the hotel, and it's convenience. The only things that could have been better were more affordable parking on-site and maids were not informed of which day we would leave and so knocked on our door and asked every morning.
- 5/5
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Horton. The property was lovely and tree service was wonderful. I love the charm and uniqueness of this place. So many hotels have a corporate, sterile feel.but here you find a warm and home-like embrace.
- 5/5
bathroom fixtures are outdated, a little rusty and handles are tight on faucets. Other than that, I wish there were more conveniently placed outlets.
- 5/5
Everything was good
- 5/5
I thought this was an extremely convenient, clean, and historically interesting hotel. I plan to return when I need to come back to San Diego.
- 3/5
Key system didn’t always work…many trips from fourth floor to the lobby for working keys.
- 5/5
5 min walk to Petco Park. Beds were comfy. Room was clean. 5 min walk to Richard Walker for breakfast.
- 5/5
Victor Ivy made sure we found the highlights of the area and best dining.
- 5/5
It felt like we walked into a place in New Orleans! Absolutely loved the place.
- 5/5
The historic features of the property were so beautiful.
- 4/5
Great location. Nice to have the bar downstairs and restaurants and the Convention Center so close. Staff mostly friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel walking distance of 5 Avenue
- 5/5
Super clean very welcoming, the staff was great great size bedroom
- 5/5
great stay, very clean!
- 4/5
The rooms were clean and the hotel was beautiful. The problem was that I could hear every step the person above me took and it made a loud popping sound in my room with every step. I know that hearing sounds from neighbors is totally normal but the loud popping sound was enough to wake me up and the person above me was up most of the night walking back and forth.
- 5/5
Great location, great service, really appreciated the preservation of the building
- 2/5
Initially booked this because the rating was pretty high and decent. First off the elevator up is creepy, Checked in and the room smelled terrible, we were so uncomfortable to stay here that we checked out and booked the Pendry the same night. Don’t recommend
- 5/5
Staff were fantastic and property was beautiful.
- 4/5
- 5/5
Beautiful Boutique Hotel
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel that maintains historic charm. We absolutely loved looking out on the courtyard! The homeless population in this area of San Diego is definitely a bummer, and I did not feel safe walking alone.
- 5/5
Convenient location. Front desk wasn't particularly attentive. Just did the basics and that was about it. Didn't ask if I needed help to bring luggage up or down.
- 5/5
Classy hotel ..room was bigger and cheaper than most places near gas lamp.
- 5/5
We loved our stay here! Close to amazing restaurants. Room was beautiful. Staff was friendly.
- 4/5
Beautiful property. Welcoming staff.
- 5/5
Lovely historic hotel! Conveniently located near larger hotels in area.
- 4/5
The property was clean and nice. Great location and safe area to walk around. Loved the the charm and history of the building. My son was with me and his comment when we walked in was "You picked a fancy hotel"
- 5/5
Room clean Staff friendly and helpful
- 5/5
Such a unique property! Make sure to take the elevator to the third and fourth floors for an adorable surprise thru the elevator window! Rooms were sweet with a balcony and fireplace. Rooms on the northeast side are a bit noisy in the evening due to the open (and beautiful) staircase leading directly to the bar below.
- 4/5
Hotel was very outdated but was convenient to Petco park. And that’s all that mattered. May stay was on 24 hours.
- 4/5
Was disappointed that I was told that the staff would call / text me when room ready. Never happened. Waited well after check in time only to find room was available. No aploogy. Also was unable to make two keys upon checking in. Had to stop back separately to get the second key.
- 5/5
Lovely hotel. Will be very happy to stay again
- 4/5
Great location in the gaslamp district. A hotel needs a refresh, but it was clean and my room had a nice balcony.
- 5/5
The room was a little dark for my taste, and the gym is tiny, aside of that, everything great
- 5/5
First off, I love Victorian homes. This hotel was beautiful, the restaurant Salt and Whiskey was very good and I received two drink coupons. It is a walking distance from Seaport Village and Gaslamp district on the next block over but the hotel area was not crowded from gaslamp crowds. Another plus was the Whiskey House was right around the corner. So many places to eat and shop. The hotel was clean, the staff was nice. They have a small gym that was great. Seating area in the patio is big and realxing. Will definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The Horton was perfect mix of historical and comfortable, with everybody there being so accommodating and kind. It was very quiet, which was great for relaxing. I would highly recommend this to a single traveler or a couple.
- 5/5
Wonderful and helpful staff. Great location. Fantastic stay!
- 5/5
I was in town for a conference, it was very easy to walk to the convention center. I was able to check in early with no problem. The front desk staff was so accommodating. Shout out to Victor for being extra friendly. The attached restaurant was also very nice. I would definitely recommend this property.
