My bed didn’t have any privacy curtain, breakfast was processed frozen waffle and instant oatmeal, but it was included! Staff real name ice, clean bedding & bathrooms.

The location was perfect. They have free breakfast, tea and coffee. Just 5 mins from the beach and close to Sunset Cliffs. The staff were so nice! I also made new friends on my trip. I will definitely come back again!

The location and convenience is always great here. It is a real value for the area, so it is hard to complain about much. The place does feel safe and secure. I like the access to the kitchen and refrigerators. Also, the wifi seemed sufficient for all the users. This is a tough one, because I was only there for a few days, but the vibe was a bit different. This could have been based on the group that was staying there, but the hosts were different than my previous experiences. In the past the hosts were always very welcoming and warm females. This time they were like a couple dudes off the set of Jersey Shore. I even walked out the front door one afternoon and the host was sitting on the sidewalk with several other "non-guests" smoking cigs just at the bottom of the front steps. Just not how my previous experiences played out. Also...what happened to the hammock?! lol

I was a solo traveler great stay other than the last few days of my vacation when a few complainers arrived from Canada other than that it was amazing no complaints great staff friendly people everything close by and tight in the beach

Air conditioning would have been nice. But, because everything else was so wonderful..It was the least of my worries. They had fans throughout the halls and in the room as well. That helped.

Super convenient location easy walk to lovely Beaches. Shopping, dining and entertainment right on the same block. Easy access to public transportation to get anywhere in the city. Staff is awesome and accommodating and friendly. Lots of fun hanging out in common areas with other guests.

Very clean, comfy bed, cozy blanket, friendly & personable staff, free parking was hit or miss as far as proximity but usually available within a block or two from the facility. I didn't see their breakfast but the kitchen was nice and usually available if you want to cook yourself something for lunch/ dinner. Love that it's a block away from the beach and soo many food & shopping stores.

The location is great, the staff is attentive and helpful. All in all, it was a satisfying experience. Thanks.

Linens were clean. Everything else needs a bit of a polish. Room is very small and humid due to no fan or AC. Bathrooms were dirty.

This place was honestly amazing! The staff was extremely helpful even if you didnt get the same person each day. The hostel is in a prime location that cant be beat for the price. The other guests that stay are very cool if you are up for a conversation. I would 10 out of 10 recommend to any of my friends. Will definitely be back.

Location, modern well-thought rooms, great staff, clean bathrooms (for a hostel this size), most people are travelers, fridges and food organization. Smoking everywhere (interior court, terrace). Breakfast hours are too short. On my second night, the guest in the bunk above me stank big time and was leaving the room all night every 5-10 minutes, making it absolutely impossible to sleep.

Breakfast was coffee, apples (Bananas if not all taken, and waffles. Room was ok.

I think needs activities with people in the hostel, so we can get to know each other (since I’m a shy person)

The art everywhere is amazing. The place is super clean and comfortable. It is 420 friendly outdoors on the patio. It is the coolest hostel I've ever stayed in and I will be back just to stay there That I had to leave early before the free complimentary breakfast nothing on there and it was because I had to catch a flight. It was all my fault. Of course there's really nothing I didn't like about the place

Location was the best, love the vibe of hostel so 70s so cool. Staff were nice. Kitchen and kitchenware weren’t useful at all. Fridge was a big mess. Breakfast was nothing interesting (no expectation)

The staff is funny as hell and on top of everything! I had such a fun stay there for 4 days and not only the location but even the other people staying at the hostel are just the best. Endless things to do just on that strip but still close to everything as well. And don’t get me started on the fully stocked cooking equipment!!!! There’s really nothing they weren’t on top of nor I can say I didn’t like about it!

The staff was kind and understanding Honestly I had a terrible time there, but I’m giving a decent review because the main issue was with me, not the property. This place is highly suitable for hippies, extra-low-budget travelers, and wierdos, all of whom have in common smoking weed. I am sober and found it extremely disturbing. I asked to cancel and leave at 7 after the first night. I was faced with understanding and cooperation, however they did charge me for the second night as well (out of 4).

Great staff , the art and murals were amazing! Also the cozy hang out area was super cool. The music was sometimes a little loud : I had to tell someone to turn it off when it was being played throughout the hallways at 7:30am. It would have been nice if they played other music beside R n B : maybe some reggae?

This hostel is right on the main street in Ocean Beach so parking is a bit of a hassle but it was easy enough to find street parking around the block. There's plenty of restaurants to eat at locally and 2 places close by to get food (a Target and a grocery store). Samesun OB doesn't look exactly like the online photos but it was still really nice with plenty of spaces to hang out in and socialize or just sit quietly and read a book. I loved the laid back vibe. The staff was great, the guests really friendly and I felt safe staying here with my 16 year old son. If I go back to San Diego I would stay here again.

The staff was friendly, my dormmates were friendly, the room and bathrooms were clean, and it was cute. My only complaint is that I thought the hostel was geared towards a younger crowd, but there were some older men staying there.

The unit was great.. the staff was excellent.. the only issue is Expedia ..don't book on Expedia as there was an issue with the unit and Expedia would not compensate me so if you're going to use Expedia make sure you don't use a non-refundable version. Suggest use other booking site

Best hostel in OB. Great service for the price and has all amenities you need. They are in the perfect location on Ocean Beach and have many food/shopping options in a walkable distance. My only complaint is that you never know what roommates you get. My first night was perfect and quiet but the second night- I was roomed with someone who stayed up late with the light on and a woman who kept coughing horribly. Coughing so much- I woke up multiple times. The breakfast is also not much of a breakfast other than oranges and a granola bar. It’s nice that it’s available tho :) thank you! The staff is very nice and the place is a vibe.

Daily breakfast and coffee was a nice touch. Good area for cooking if you chose to. A bit noisy with nearby bars and because our room was near kitchen but they offer ear plugs. Check in staff were lovely. Steps to the beach and live music. Hostel itself is spacious with room outside to sit. We got a private room and only thing was the bathroom is set on a motion detector so the light kept going off while showering and with no Windows you couldn’t see so only suggestion would be a clear shower curtain that maybe would pick up on a sensor. Overall good stay. We enjoyed it!

It’s the cheapest room in Ocean Beach. The room is cozy with cute decor. They leave a pair of water bottles and some old mints, lol. Lots of young people hanging about. We are old so we always book the private rooms. Nice place for a night or two just to hang out in OB.

Staff was amazing. The place was lovely outside out quiet hours and nestled in between shops and restaurants. Beautiful location. Wednesdays market was set up right it front. Parking is a little hard to come by but do able. Read the signs before parking.

Would recommend a stay here. My husband and I stayed in a queen room with private bath. It is noisy but we went there knowing that would be and just turned on the provided fan. Very clean room and cooled nicely with central air.

Bunk beds could be more sturdier, I was on the top bunk and anytime the person on the bottom bunk moved I felt like there was an earthquake

Fun location, attentive friendly staff, but mattress and shared rooms could use improvment.

It was a nice hostel with nice people. They offered beach towels, sunscreen and some more things for free. They had vending machines and beach stuff for rent. The breakfast was ok and the kitchen was oretty well equipped. The women's bathrooms were nice but sometimes the showers stayed a little dirty for a few days.

Very convenient for a solo trip. Did have a private room but if a group is sharing it'd be convenient as well with a number of beds available. Place is super clean and very cozy. One could just relax with coffee available and nice patios to enjoy the moment. Very close to the beach and the area is to walk around with many coffe shops and restaurants, and bars nearby. I would definitely take it next time around I have a solo project. And If I go with company, it'd be also convenient with a private room. Staff is superb. I had an awesome check in experience (with a welcome tour!) and a nice chatting moment. Most may say it is just a coincidence but it could also be that it they're doing a great job. Can't point out more than it is a pristine place, maybe one of the most important aspects of lodging. Kudos to housekeeping! Restrooms,.though shared, it's not as though one has no bathroom available. There are some "solo" bathrooms as well. Very convenient. All in all, excellent place to land. Did I mention one has a chance to mingle with tourists of their places? I got a chance to use my Spanish with some folks from Argentina! and use my rusty French as well. Cool place.

Samesun is a great budget option! The staff were nice, very strict on the rules, but that was ok because it made it feel like a safe and controlled space. Everything was super clean, and it is very close to the beach. I would definitely stay again.

It is a beautiful place. I came in late and lwft early so didnt get to use the amenities. Will be trying it out again with a longer stay.

This hostel is very nice and clean. They have a spacious common area and it is located next to the beach. They have a farmer’s market every Wednesday on their street and it was one of the best markets I have ever been. All the staff are very friendly and helpful! Def will come back to stay here whenever I’m in San Diego.

This was my first experience with a hostel and it was very enjoyable staying here. Having the ability to cook my own food is great. The location is great, so close to the beach. A target and CVS is in close walking distance. The transit system is quite effective too. The front desk staff is great and full of great recommendations.

The hostel is really nice and clean. Staff are very friendly and I love how spacious the common area is. Def will stay here again.

This is my first time at a hostel and i enjoyed being able to cook my own food and have my own place. There was no pressure to mingle. No one bothers you if you want to sit in the corner to read for the whole day.

Samesun in Ocean Beach is a gem. Parking after 4pm is pretty easy to find. I've stayed at other hostels in SD and this is a HUGE issue. Mark was there at check in. He is clearly the veteran staffer and it shows. My check out was not as smooth. I am an early riser 5am. Morning staff dude was slow to make coffee and set out breakfast. Fussed at me for not stripping the bed. Had to make two additional trips upstairs to the room to complete what was asked...because he failed to provide clear instructions. I'm sure the other visitor was awakened each time. Next time I'll just get up and leave. Less drama and Starbucks has better coffee.

LOVE the centralized location of this place on one of the main strips in Ocean Beach! Had no reason to leave the area as everything was in walking distance with plenty of spots for food, drinks and the beach close down the street! Definitely interested in staying at this place in the future!

This place & area is advertised as a safe/welcoming place for people of all walks, this just isn't true. If you don't fit inside "the box", I would advise against this particular vacation spot. Most people will treat you like an oddity and stare/say something, and those who don't will still treat you like an inconvenience at best. The other guests were standoffish and distant, the staff seemed aloof about it all and unconcerned about guests. Stay safe!!!

I was looking for a safe affordable option as a solo traveler, and Samesun delivered on all counts. I appreciated the attention to safety and emotional wellbeing, as well as the welcoming atmosphere and fun, cozy decor. I especially appreciated the option between communal bathroom and single bathroom/shower combos on each floor. I was not there long enough to take full advantage of the surfboards and patio and games in the communal area, but would love to come back for a longer stay. There is airport noise, but that’s true everywhere in San Diego. All the shops and eateries on the street are fun and unique, and the nightlife is vibrant and engaging.

It was definitely very clean! You need to do residential parking unfortunately. Feels pretty safe in general since it’s in a very busy street with shops, restaurants and bars. Only complaint is the receptionist that checked us in was a bit rude. I called the day before our stay to see if we can do an early check in and they happily said yes, anytime after 8am. We arrive early and he was very rude saying check in is at 3pm. We explained the situation and how we called in advance. He then said: idk who you talked to but check in is at 3pm. Very dismissive. Thankfully he then checked to see if there was a room available which our room was ready (as we called in advance). He then said sorry for the confusion. But he definitely left us with a bitter taste. The rest of the staff was super nice and tried to help us with our luggage.

Definitely one of the best hostel experiences in the States. The vibe is super chill as are all of the people that I encountered. Great place to stay if while exploring San Diego.

Went there on a whim whim, was pleasantly surprised That they had guitars to play and yoga mats to use, nice smoking area where people chat and meet friends.

When I was looking at places to stay this was a lil odd to me but couldn't beat the price. I was weary of sleeping in a room with 7 strangers but I never heard a peep from anyone the 3 days I was there. I was a lil weirded out when booking about shared bathrooms/showers but there is a private one (only used the downstairs one) upstairs in the shared was pretty nice though. I got ready in there and showered and thankfully theres a "free to use" box that came in handy. Everything was clean except if you barefoot around sand is everywhere which I didn't mind. The location is perfect, one way to the beach and the strip has shops, eateries, bars and was suprised even a Target! I absolutely would stay here again, never had a concern for my safety and staff was friendly!

I liked the location’s proximity to the beach, just a five minute walk away. There were also dozens of food options, within walking distance, however non-tourist gift shops were a little far. Rooms were pretty clean, bathrooms could have been checked more, the common areas were the least clean

I love how close it was to the beach.

Pros: 1) soft beds 2) quiet is encouraged after 11 so not too noisy at bed time 3) close to ocean beach. It is right on Newport avenue so great location 4) they have chairs and umbrellas as well as surfboards which you can borrow Cons 1) breakfast is very bare bones. They just have some tangerines, waffles and instant oat/granola bars which gets over by 9:15AM 2) you have to park couple of blocks down if you have a vehicle 3) bathrooms sometimes are fully occupied in the morning, but not too bad. 4) kitchen is small. So lot of people moving around during breakfast means you have to wait.
