My first experience with an hostel and was impressed, not bad but will not go back not because it was bad but because I can’t share a room with someone
- 5/5
On my way to hostel I noticed it was in the middle of the night scene! Checked in and hung out for a bit. Staff was friendly and helpful. Loved the shared space definitely felt like a safe environment

It was better than I expected.

Staff was amazing very nice people; everything is walking distance from the hostel. I really like everything.

Good location if you want to explore downtown. Not good if you're uncomfortable with common gender bathroom and restroom.
- 5/5
This was one of the best hostel experiences I’ve ever had. The staff was friendly, the room and restrooms were clean, and the decor was Instagram worthy - and also very calming at night. 10/10 experience. Thank you!

They offer cereal, oatmeal & orange slices for breakfast, they could probably use a bigger coffee maker tho. There's a great overall vibe with helpful volunteers and Ericka the manager does an outstanding job!
- 1.5/5
Ok location. The place stinks of urine. Absolutely impossible to spend any time in any common area. Room was okay, but very small. You have to make your own bed and take the sheets off at the end of your stay. On my bed there was some trash and bottle from previous person, probably they dont check places after a person leaves.

I enjoyed staying at Gaslamp Hostel , is one of the best hostel places to stay in town .❤️😊

"If I could give zero stars, I would. This hotel runs a completely deceptive racket. They gladly accept your booking and charge your card, but wait until they send the final itinerary to inform you that local San Diego residents are banned. They deliberately hide this deal-breaking policy during the checkout process so they can trap your money. If a hotel isn't going to let you stay there, they shouldn't be allowed to process your payment first. Avoid this place at all costs unless you enjoy throwing your money away."
- 5/5
Centrally located. Clean and surprisingly quiet for being in the middle of the Gaslamp area. Bus service close by. Reception was welcoming.
- 5/5
We only spend a few hours to sleep and checkout early today. Can't use the amenities in full but it locks good

It is a great place to stay and enjoy the beautiful San Diego 👏👏
- 5/5
First time in a hostel and incredible! Felt very safe and welcome by staff. Clean comfy bed, storage for luggage, even fun games and common areas right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter.. If you're a light sleeper, it is surrounded by all the bars and pubs and noise, but if you came to have a good time and night life, this is for you!
- 5/5
Great stay! Highly recommend it
- 5/5
The staff is amazing. And the place is great too I didn’t like that there’s was no parking available but it’s to be expected in DTSD
- 5/5
The Laundry room Is very clean and easy operate 👍

Laundry Room is super clean as always 👍👍👍
- 5/5
The coolest place in town 👏😃👍
- 5/5
Yes everything when fine
- 2/5
The location was perfect. No doubts. The staff was pretty friendly and helpful. Pretty easy to get around, lots of restaurants, bars, groceries, and more. I didn’t like that my roommate would slam the door during quiet hours, coming in and out 5, 6, 7, even 8 (Yes, I was counting because she woke me up every single time) times around 12 a.m., slamming it every single time. I contacted the hostel and they completely missed my point, stating that guests are allowed to come and go, which I understand. That wasn’t the problem. The problem was the door being slammed every single time. They offered earplugs, but again, if you’re slamming the door, you can still hear and feel the vibration. Earplugs don’t fix that. I also did not like the mixed-gender bathroom situation because men would stare at your every move once you came out into the enclosed area. It felt uncomfortable, not for me. My review is not to bash the hostel. I’ve stayed in different hostels around the world, and this is the first time I’ve seen a guest coming in and out of the room to sleep in another room with a worker literally sneaking her in. That is highly unprofessional and raises a safety concern for me. If a staff member is able to sneak people into rooms, that’s a serious issue. I also noticed a lot of emphasis during my stay on providing a good review. I’m not sure how the number of reviews is so high because my experience was underwhelming compared to what I saw online, definitely expected more. Personally, I wouldn’t go back.
- 5/5
Clean room, courteous staff, easy check-in, baggage hold until late after check-out, and friendly fellow guests. I would definitely stay again.

- 5/5
Colorful and bright! The beds were comfortable and I liked the outlet and light in my bunk.
- 4/5
I had a private room and it was mostly wonderful but the mattress was terrible (Room 18). I like a firm mattress and I'm fine with stuff not being fancy but damn. My lower back was screaming by the end of the week. I actually checked to see if it was just a box spring by mistake. Time to throw this one out.
- 4.5/5
Friendly staff, convenient location & loved the positive energy!
- 5/5
I needed to arrive after midnight and leave early. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Appreciated very much the funky decor, cleanliness and organization of the place. Thank you
- 4/5
For a hostel, this was run pretty well. There are many friendly staff members on hand. Key card access gets you inside the hostel and the room. The bathrooms are co-ed, which was off-putting at first, but the main doors are left open for safety. There is a laundry room, a massive kitchen, and a rec room. I stayed in the 6-bedroom room, which isn't ideal, but you get what you pay for. The location is central to mass transit, making it one of the primary reasons I chose this location.
- 5/5
Just wonderful!
- 5/5
Great location with clean, comfortable rooms. Amazing ambiance and professional staff. I would stay hear again.
- 4.5/5
The breakfast was good and the food was fresh. The coffee was exceptional. The staff was welcoming and friendly, also very accommodating, I highly recommend this place for foreign visitors or solo travelers, like myself. 1) No elevator for those of us with feet problems. 2) No coffee available until 8 a.m. -- and I am an early riser!
- 5/5
Maybe one of the best hostels I’ve stayed at in a while. It was very clean, the staff was very welcoming and friendly. Maria and John were super friendly and helpful. Great location as well. Will definitely recommend and be back next time I’m back in San Diego. Honestly, not one bad thing I can say about this hostel. A++.
- 5/5
Great hostel. Highly recommend
- 5/5
The entire property was very clean and the facilities are fantastic. The location is perfect and the staff were exceptionally friendly and very accommodating to all of our needs. We would stay again in a split second, thank you Gaslamp hostel for making our stay memorable. We absolutely loved everything about the property.
- 5/5
Staff were amazing, great leads for activities and entertainment. Nothing to complain about.
- 5/5
Has a multi station kitchen for anyone who doesn’t want to eat on the go or are traveling on a budget, grocery store is a short walk to be able to prepare meals. Can’t complain. Affordable, cool staff an friendly house mates, clean fun atmosphere . I would absolutely recommend to friends and family.

The lobby and hallways smell bad and it was super noisy.

It was fine. I was only there overnight so I can’t speak to any of the amenities or things they offer..
- 4/5
Very Nice Hostel, extremely clean, the female volunteer employees are friendly & hard working, the house is literally on top of all the action at Gaslamp Plaza...Great stay 😉
- 5/5
Clean and comfortable room. Food and drinks in the check in area. Really lije the atmosphere of this place.
- 5/5
Amazing place
- 5/5
Clean room, but there was a strong fecal odor like cat poop in the entire place including the entry area. My clothes even reeked of it after I left. You guys may have a mouse or rat problem that needs to be addressed - or someone has snuck a cat in. I very much appreciated the stay though, despite that! Everyone was friendly and I felt very safe.
- 4/5
Gaslamp hostile is a huge electrified space in the heart of the nightlife which had no interference. Staff is friendly and plentiful ready to help with your needs. My second hostile experience and impressed overall.
- 5/5
Emplomes are so linda!
- 5/5
Cheeky humor on the signs
- 5/5
This was my first time staying in a Hostel and I'm so glad I did! The Gaslamp Hostel was a wonderful place to stay. It's not perfect. But it is quaint and very comfortable. I would highly recommend staying here, especially if you enjoy other fellow single travelers. Just an all around great place!
- 3/5
Good for simple stays
- 5/5

- 4/5
Friendly staff
- 5/5
Great wonderful staff. Location is in the middle of Gaslamp District. Very convenient if your looking for a place to stay at the last minute. For those coming to Petco Park, I highly recommend, since it's knly 5 minutes walking.
- 5/5
They have an event schedule every night for the guests in the hostel to connect
- 5/5
One of my Favorite Hostels it’s in a great location and is a fun stay downtown for relaxing and fun. Nice Staff and clean rooms!
- 5/5
(parking in place is limited)
- 5/5
Well this was the 2nd time I've used this hostal and will say the staff is super helpful, made some improvements and did enjoy the activities that they have. Kitchen and dinning area was still nice. Plus always getting some cool or awesome bunk mates. If you need a good place to crash for the night I'd recommend this place. Even if it's for your 1st time.
- 5/5
My first ever hostel stay and it was amazing! The staff were lovely and had lots of recommendations for things to do. They'd often check in at the end of the day asking how my day was and what I'd been up to. Would definitely go bsck
- 5/5
Great place to stay for SDCC!
- 5/5
Good location excellent staff everything in area is walkable
- 5/5
Good price and location.
- 5/5
They are a great property. Top to bottom
- 5/5
Very Nice Hostel downtown. It’s always clean and welcoming. The hostel stays peaceful and comfortable! Great atmosphere!
- 2/5
It worth the money I spent.
- 5/5
I enjoyed my stay pretty awesome food spots and bar very vibrant and lots to do ...
- 1/5
Too dirty it was so bad experience
- 5/5
It was very nice
- 5/5
This was my first time staying at a hostel. I was kind of nervous, but they made me feel welcome. They allow you to hang in the lounge until your bed is ready and store your bags. They also was nice and showed me a book with stories of the history of the building. All staff was top notch.
- 5/5
We had a private room, #22, which is right at the top of the stairs and didn’t hear a peep all night. The beds were very comfy and the pillows were firm. The communal bathroom was safe and clean too. This was a great option for a downtown stay and will be the first spot I look for when I’m back in town.
- 5/5
I will definitely recommend staying here! Hostel staff was warm and welcoming upon arrival. I was by myself without my family and nervous and the staff help me so much when I needed it! I am so grateful first day in there. I had an amazing experience. I was blessed talking with the most amazing people from everywhere experiencing beautiful sites I have never seen before. The beaches bars and restaurants are walkable distance. They have social events and a nice clean kitchen! I would definitely recommend staying here with friends for a couple days experiencing life and come back to a safe and warm environment. Thank you Gaslight Hostel!!!!!!!!
- 5/5
Hotel is nice and clean. Great Staff, everyone is friendly.
- 1/5
There was no toilet paper in the bathroom, so I had to open the stall door and yell for help. It was pretty embarrassing. Then when they brought some, there was no apology, just excuses. The staff was unfriendly and not helpful,
- 5/5
Would highly recommend Gaslamp Hostel! For my first hostel experience in years, I felt safe and welcome immediately upon arrival (which was very important to me traveling solo as a woman). The hostel itself has such a unique, homey, cozy vibe, and you'd never know that you were on a busy street downtown. Absolutely loved the funky art and colorful walls, the kitchen and upstairs eating area, and shower/laundry facilities. Everything was kept super clean, and the staff was super friendly and helpful with giving suggestions for local food/outings. This will definitely be my go-to stay whenever I'm back in the San Diego area :)
- 4/5
Great vibes. Kinda stupid you can’t bring a guest into your private room. Or anyone that volunteers can’t go into your room. That’s pretty stupid. But so is California
- 5/5
Great vintage vibe. Comfortable. Upgraded bathrooms were a plus. The staff at the check-in desk was helpful, considerate, but not overly friendly. That’s OK.
- 5/5
They thought of everything a hosteller would need.
- 5/5
Great facility & staff. I look forward to staying here again in the future
- 5/5
If I may start by saying this, everyone at the property is very professional and polite with all the guests. The rooms are good and it’s right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter for all your fun and enjoyment. Definitely worth noting that they have events on the property and they’re a lot of fun and very interactive. Overall, my week at Gaslamp was great with a lot of great people and memories.
- 5/5
Loved this place! Would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Location and vibe
- 5/5
Located in the heard of Gaslamp district this is a bit of an oasis. Very clean and organized shared bathrooms and kitchen facilities, compositionally shared lounges, fun social activities. Beds were small but comfortable. Guests and street noise were pretty manageable plus hostel offered ear plugs. I enjoyed my stay with my sister very much.
- 5/5
Great location, great value
- 5/5
I super enjoyed my stay here! Everything about Gaslamp hostel is great. There could be healthier breakfast food options available (i.e. choices with no sugar added). I appreciated the beverages provided throughout the day. Loved the location, hostel activities, and international staff and visitors. Overall, this is a well run facility. I was concerned about the exit step down not being marked. I appreciated being able to wait in the lounge for check in. Since I had not slept the night before arriving, it would have been nice to have a quick verbal orientation. It would be a good idea to post “quiet hours” since there is such a mix of travelers, including working people, and people from differing time zones…I will definitely stay here again! Great value!
- 3/5
Congested and staffs are not cooperative at all
- 5/5
The best hostel to stay!! From check-in/out, the staff and other guest were amazing. The rooms were completely clean and bathrooms spotless!! Definitely will stay there over a crazy priceless hotel. 💯🎈
- 5/5
The most bang for your buck, and by far the best area to stay in, gaslamp quarter had excellent dining options, walk-ability, access to public transport and the ocean, etc. Inside the hostel we felt super safe, everything's clean, orderly, and has a wonderful charm that adds to the experience, even if you just need a quick bed and shower.
- 4/5
Let's face it, bunk beds are not the most conducive to a good night's sleep. And you can't expect a "hotel room" experience in a hostel. But everyone on the staff was very cool, and while I would probably opt for the expense of a hotel room in the future I did enjoy the experience.
- 5/5
Me and My girlfriend very much loved the stay at the Hostel. We felt very safe and thought the staff did an outstanding job.
- 5/5
Excellent!
- 5/5
This place is wonderful! The staff is super friendly and helpful. They treat you like a long time friend. Not once did I see something dirty or messy. As a single lady, I felt completely safe and in good company. If I come back to San Diego, this is where I’m staying!
- 5/5
You feel welcomed.
- 3/5
I recommend staying at a Hostel no more than a night maybe 2. This hostel is like a foreign flower power party. Music is going on all night on top of the fact that the Gaslamp district itself doesnt shut down until 1am so bring noise cancelling headphones because its NOISY!!! It wasnt a horrible stay but I dont like sharing bathrooms like its a public restroom. And the housekeeping should clean earlier in the morning before 8am not at 9am when everyone is up and needs to get into the restrooms. Theres 2 bathrooms each with 4 toilets and 4 showers so thats 8 toilets and 8 showers for a hostel that houses over 100 guest. Not smart! Overall it was an ok stay and the staff was really nice.
- 5/5
As good as it gets for a hostel. Great location, yet quiet inside. Clean. Friendly staff. Everyone staying there was chill and friendly as they have a great workplace and community culture.
- 3/5
First time staying in a hostel. This one is a whole vibe like an adult dormitory that doesnt sleep until late. I recommend staying no more than 1 maybe 2 night's. The bunk bed situation is not desirable for longer stays. Most of the staff are all young foreign kids. Nice kids but the manager needs to train them better for check in. And have housekeeping clean the bathrooms BEFORE 8am. They have a great kitchen area where you can actually buy groceries and cook your own meals. Thats a plus.
- 5/5
Great stay
- 3/5
The staffs are professional and very nice.
- 5/5
Everyone especially the Manager was beyond helpful and very hospitable. Everything that one could ask or need was available and or not very far away. Extremely clean and cool place. Convenient ×1000
- 1/5
Noisy
- 5/5
The Gaslamp hostel is an excellent place to stay in heart of downtown San Diego for budget travelers. It's close to the airport and several major tourist attractions and also has amazing dining options around. The staff are super friendly and helpful, the amenities are well maintained and clean. The only downside is that since it is located in a bustling area, over the weekends, it was extremely noisy in the area around and hence quite difficult to sleep with with all the party sounds pouring in. For a light sleeper like me, that was a real challenge but perhaps for a heavy sleeper, it would be fine. And the room walls are paper thin, so there was also a lot of noise coming from the other rooms. But overall, I cannot complain much. I would stay there again, despite the noise issue.
- 5/5
Everything you could want in a hostel. I checked in suuuuuper late with no hassle & checked out early with no hassle. Will be back againl.
- 4/5
great stay overall. Friendly staff
- 5/5
I traveled a long way from home by myself for the first time ever! I felt safe. Staff and other guests are super friendly! It's close to anything you could ever want/need. While I didn’t attend, they do something different for the guests 6 out of 7 days of the week. Everything is clean. It smelled nice. Huge fan of the big windows, natural lighting, and overall funky aesthetic! Thank you Gaslamp Hostel for aiding in my unforgettable trip!!
- 5/5
Great location and nice people.
- 5/5
Staff was very friendly. Rooms all have locks on them and have charging lockers inside to keep belongings safe. They have social events every day in case you’re looking for something to break the ice. Def would stay again.
- 5/5
yeah it was a hostel... i probably should have researched the neighborhood first. tons of clubs and loud bangin music thru the night. bring earplugs! otherwise, good good.
- 5/5
I can't say enough about this place. Everyone was really nice, my room was clean, the place had many amenities, all at an unbeatable price! I will definitely be back!
- 5/5
there are many great places to eat around the hostel - very walkable
- 5/5
This is a very convenient area to stay. You're within walking distance to many well known tourist places. A grocery close by as well as some of the best restaurants in the downtown area. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
We loved the charm of the place. Had a private room with shared bathroom. Bathroom was clean. Staff were super nice and friendly. It’s right on a busy street so bring earplugs if it’s a weekend. Would definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
It is such a great place to be and considering I was going to the convention it walk to I had a great time meeting people there.
- 5/5
Love the architecture!
- 4/5
Excellent location. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Carpet needs to go, vinal flooring it will be better to hold the traffic. Carpet is old.
- 5/5
Good stop just hard to find not their fault
- 5/5
Nice spot
- 3/5
Stayed in a twin room it was aight
- 5/5
I love it
- 5/5
The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful, and they keep the facilities clean and well organized. My only recommendation is to clean the bathrooms earlier in the morning (around 7:00 am) rather than close them off for cleaning during a peak hour (at 8:00 am).
- 4/5
- 5/5
Absolutely perfect location, friendly staff, and amazing amenities. Can't recommend this spot enough!
- 5/5
Can’t go wrong staying here. Cheap, lot of amenities, clean, awesome staff, & 11 am checkouts (lot of places nearby do 10am). Perfect for solo travellers
- 5/5
I enjoyed the time on the property. It was great.
- 5/5
Was a great stay
- 5/5
Fabulois
- 2/5
Bathroom smell was very awful, there are only 3 shower room, 3 bathrooms so all people share with it
- 4/5
Stayed here many times. Location is great and they have a few nights where they have activities. Wifi reception has been spotty in the past but was good this time around. One drawback this time from past visits is that their water filtration machhine was out of order. I had 2 separate stays over a 2 week span and they never fixed this. Also lots of painting going on during part of my stay. I saw a few guests with paint on their shirts!
- 4/5
Great place for a one-night vacation. Other guests were very respectful in the shared bathroom, the kitchen and other common areas.
- 1/5
The pipe above my bed had dripping water from condensation. Staff were rude.
- 5/5
As with any hostel, a positive is that people from all walks of life and every region of the US and the world come together here. It can, however, also be a pain point (also in any hostel) as it seems it is not universally considered rude to have blaringly loud conversations or video on speaker phone at all hours of the night, or to make as much noise as one wants by coming in, going out, or accessing luggage or lockers at all hours of the night. That being said, Gaslamp Hostel is one of the best at mitigating that and creating a pleasant place.
- 5/5
Everything
- 5/5
This was a great place to stay. The staff were nice and helpful. The beds creek a lot, but totally understand they are older so not too big of a deal. I would definitely book here again!!
- 5/5
Great deal. Got a private room and was very happy with the location and the convenience. Staff was helpful. I’d definitely stay here again.

This was my first time staying at a hostel, although I did opt for an individual room. The room was small - no frills - but comfortable. The bathroom facilities were shared but clean, and I never had to wait to use a toilet or shower. Convenient walking distance to the convention center, lots of food options in the neighborhood, friendly staff - if I ever find myself back in San Diego, this will be my first choice for lodging.

Having stayed in the hostel years before I had found it to be a clean, relatively quiet, and professional affordable option in the heart of San Diego and a special gem for large events such as San Diego Comic Con. On this trip I found the hostel to very noisy - with patrons partying in the lobby well past the posted noise hours and general disregard for shared toilet and shower space (while I was brushing my teeth I saw a patron use the shower as a toilet). I also experienced issues with my check in and when I tried to return to my room for bedtime around 11pm found my key no longer worked. When I tried to contact night staff to let me into my room I had to wait for 10 mins before a night staff member appeared - during which time I noticed an open can of beer behind the desk. If you are in your 20s and want a heavy party environment resembling a college dorm this is the hostel for you.

I had an amazing stay at Gaslamp Hostel during my San Diego visit! The hostel's location in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter was perfect for exploring the city. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the amenities were top-notch. The dorm rooms were clean and comfortable, and the communal areas were great for meeting other travelers. I especially loved the fully-stocked kitchen and the free breakfast every morning. The hostel also organized fun events and activities, like karaoke and walking tours. I felt like I was part of a community, not just a tourist. Gaslamp Hostel exceeded my expectations in every way. I can't recommend it enough - it's a must-stay for anyone visiting San Diego!

The Gaslamp Hostel is a great place to stay in Gaslamp. Amazing location, service and staff! Kate, Shannon, Pedro, Madison, Meg, Erika, Isadora, just to name a few, are legends and will make your day and your stay. Totally recommend staying here!

It had all the things I needed for my stay.

Location, location, location - fantastic! However, having 5th St. blocked off at both ends afternoon/evening reduces its accessibility. The "free Continental breakfast" is appreciated, but does not rise to a normal Continental breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, toast and jam, yogurt, etc. Keep trying, though! Finally, make sure there's enough toilet paper in the bathrooms to last until the next morning. Yes, I'd stay here again; it's a lively, funky, charismatic place to stay.

My favorite hostel so far. Next time I’ll be booking for multiple nights; one wasn’t enough.

I booked a private room, and thought I would be getting a single bed with a window. Instead I got a windowless bunk bed. The walls were painted dark blue and it was very depressing. The room was also hot and stuffy. The air conditioning is connected to several rooms, so if it was cooler in my room, it would affect other rooms. There are a lot of vagrants in the downtown area. And I mean A LOT. I didn't like walking around there in the daytime, let alone the night. The hostel decor itself was very colorful and cheerful, and the staff very good.

You can drop off luggage if you arrive early and enjoy the town without lugging your luggage around until checkin time. If you want to visit the city after checkout time you can leave your luggage at the hostel until early evening when you are asked to retrieve it.

What a wonderful experience! First time in a hostel, so this may be more a review against pre-conceived notions than prior experience, but that is what I have. Ease of check-in and out. It is just a place that some people use akin to a hotel and that is their prerogative. I gently immersed myself in the happenings of the place, selectively chatting with other guests who, although there was an age mix, were mostly younger than me. I found many of them to be delightfully friendly, curious, inquisitive and engaging as they or I desired. The room is as advertised, with 3 sets of 2 bunks, decent mattresses and basic linens. Locker available and locks sold cheaply which was very much appreciated. There is a basic set up for breakfast of coffee, cream, cereal and milk, canned fruit, and oatmeal packets. If I stayed a week or more I would get my own no sugar oatmeal and a bit of fresh berries for my bfast as their options were all sugar added. That isn't really a complaint as I am not eating low carb in SD, but I like to avoid it in cases when I enjoy the item just as well with less of it. The kitchen has proper utensils and knives, pans, etc as well as enough pantry and fridge storage to make meals home as a traveler desires. Laundry room available to guests 3-10 daily. There seemed to be availability the couple of times I looked. The rate was great, not only in comparison to hotels but modern times. Bravo, great place, thank you, do recommend and will stay again!
