Reviews
The hotel is generally praised for its historic architecture, cleanliness, and friendly staff. However, many guests express dissatisfaction with the valet parking service and the presence of homeless people in the surrounding area.
- Historic architecture and cleanliness

- Valet parking service is expensive and not always efficient
- Presence of homeless people in the surrounding area

Vallet: incredibly slow. Specially on Sunday mornings. I paid $70 for a vallet & waited 30 min to get my car. Room service: Ordered 2coffees & 2 orange juices 8:15 am & didn’t get it till 9:05 had to leave the room. Will never stop at this location.

It’s a beautiful hotel staff is polite properties very clean maintain. Only problem I had was that there was not garage parking at the hotel. You have the option of paying $70 for valet parking or finding a parking garage nearby and paying that. Only other complaint I have was the Wi-Fi was down during my stay. It worked have been nice to get a discount due to that inconvenience.

Our stay was relaxing. The on-site bar and restaurant was nice and convenient. The hotel is near to many restaurants and bars. We were able to walk to the Padres game very easily.
- 5/5
Great Location, walking distance to many highlights in downtown, staff was very friendly and helpful. The room is clean and spacious. The historical highlights in the building gave this hotel a lot of charm and made it unique to the area.

Historical building well maintained. The area around hotel a little sketchy with street people. Be aware linen service is every other day.

Great experience, room was clean. Felt safe and comfortable

It’s an old building.. they are old offices turned into hotel rooms.. the smell and the air conditioning made me not want to go ever again. But the bed arrangements made want my money back

The room was clean and spacious. The mini fridge and microwave were a huge bonus! The staff were very friendly and helpful as well.

Clean and very beautiful stay
- 3/5
The heritage building is very beautiful, but that being said the rooms were quite dated, the shower
- 5/5
Very helpful staff and close to the downtown area.
- 5/5
The hotel is really beautiful! Originally built as a bank in 1928, the lobby is stunning and the downstairs has the vaults and artifacts that are very interesting. The rooms have been updated and are clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and gave us an upgrade without our asking. I would stay here again and recommend it for events in DT SD.
- 2/5
Very dated
- 4/5
The location is just a big rough if you’re with kids and plan to walk. The city has let the homeless issue become a problem and the hotel pays the price for it.
- 4/5
The hotel lobby area is beautiful, location is accessible, and staff was friendly. However, the surrounding area is not desirable and the rooms have little amenities.
- 2/5
I choose this hotel based on the reviews. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. On my first night, I called down to the bar to order food for pickup as they don’t offer room service. I was hung up on twice. I ended up going downstairs to order my food. The guy who helped me was nice, but the bartender who dropped off my food was rude. He basically threw my food at me. I ended up avoiding the bar after that. The actual room smelled musty and had stains in the bathroom. The bed was very hard and uncomfortable. My back was not happy. On my last night, I heard a knock at my door at 3am. It was a man bringing a pillow that I never asked for. Turns out he had the wrong room. It’s safe to say that I will not be staying here again. The valet people were kind but $70/night seems a bit high.
- 4/5
Hotel decor is amazing! We also purchased breakfast which was delicious and a great way to start our day. Vents in the room should be cleaned more regularly. Homelessness is an area problem, but that's more of a city issue. We would stay at this property again.
- 5/5
Great room and friendly staff. I would definitely return.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly responsive staff, nice clean room, great food when room service was ordered and moderately priced. Fitness center was decent as well, with modern equipment.
- 4/5
Stayed 3 nights - our room was to be cleaned after 2 days. Wasn’t ever done. Called that night and someone came up with bath towels, no hand towels or wash cloths. We gathered up the garbage cans and she emptied them. The room itself was clean upon check-in. The bathroom sink/vanity area is not user friendly at all. Hard to explain the set-up but no room to place much and everything falls out the sides of the metal “stand” that the sink sits in? Shortage of electrical plug ins by the bed sides and there aren't ANY by the “couch and “bar area”. The marble flooring and walls and the old wooden doors and transoms are gorgeous & the architecture in the lobby is stunning. Menu was lacking but the bar was nice.

- 4/5
Staff was helpful and friendly. Room was nice and clean. Area around the hotel has a huge homeless population.
- 5/5
Such a lovely place - old school hotel with some history. It has everything you need. It was clean, the personnel was nice and helpful.
- 4/5
Room was great view was even better breakfast menu is pretty standard steak that came with eggs was very chewy

- 3/5
The area around the block of the hotel is not safe to walk around and dirty. The room smelled really bad even after turning on the fan/AC. Even though upon reservation through Expedia it states you’re paying for 2 breakfast vouchers they only gave me 1 ticket and said it’s only for 1 plate and 1 drink. It’s not continental. Parking is Valet only $65 for 1 night.
- 5/5
The room was great. The staff was friendly and the check in process was smooth and the location was not as bad as I had thought it would’ve been based on the other reviews. The room service options were great, I highly recommend the chilaquiles. I did not get my complimentary bottle of wine at check in though so that’s why I deducted a star.

- 4/5
The hotel was nice, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. My only issues were the tiny bathroom sink with an awkward faucet - you really can’t wash your face easily, and the towel racks, which aren’t very functional. It was also a bit noisy at night due to the location.Other than those issues, it was a nice place to stay. Walking distance to most everything.
- 4/5
The location is not so ideal. Downtown San Diego has too many homeless people wondering in the dark. If you are looking for a place to sleep comfortably at night, this is indeed a good place. Not a good place to wonder outside at night with family.
- 1/5
The manager is rude and doesn’t let you express your experience as customer. I do not recommend it.

Outrageous pricing for snacks and gift shop/store. Ordered two small bags of popcorn and it was $20. Whoever set those prices should be shame of themselves

Room was beautiful. The building was beautiful and the staff were very kind. 10/10 would recommend
- 2/5
The room was very sad. It was on the second floor and it looked out on pipes from the building next door. The room felt dirty and dingy. There was dirty spots on the wallpapers. The area around the hotel is very dingy as well.

Liked that it was a bank and they kept most of the building the same
- 5/5
This hotel had a little history, it use to be First Interstate Bank. When walking through the hotel you’ll notice they still have everything from back then. It even still had the cutter mailing system throughout the different floors. Pretty cool. Hotel was VERY CLEAN, staff was very polite and they even have a little happy hour with a complementary glass of champagne. I would recommend.

I had an issue wit the parking garage that this hotel recommend and they had zero assistance when I had a problem. My rental car was locked in the garage for a full day. I’m working with laz parking for a refund on that. However, it was the lack of empathy to assist us. We lost a full day of our vacation plans with the rental car.
- 4/5
Place was clean and staff was super friendly. Enjoyed my one night stay. Area had a lot of homeless outside but didn’t bother anyone. Parking was terrible. Valet $65 and self park is $45 parking lot is small and you have to walk there is no direct connection to the hotel from the parking lot. Personally for a one night stay didn’t bother me too much but had I have more luggage for a longer stay would’ve been an issue.

- 5/5
Nice, clean and friendly staff. Will stay again.
- 5/5
This hotel is BEAUTIFUL! It is restored vintage and is just beautiful. Valet service was great and fast. My only disappointment was the area, a lot of homeless people and you see people shooting up right on the street. It’s a-shame.

- 5/5
Beautiful hotel. Wasn't expecting that since it's a Courtyard. Very unique.
- 5/5
Valet parking is pricey.

Love the old character in this building.

Room was great, bed was comfortable and floor was nice snd quiet.

- 3/5
Shower was broken and I did not get the complimentary bottle of wine that was mentioned but the place was beautiful
- 3/5
Excellent customer service. Good location. Good sized gym.
- 2/5
I stayed Saturday to Thursday. I asked twice to have my room cleaned and only when I saw a maid on my floor and then asked her to clean the room she did on Wednesday the day before I checked out. Refrigerator in room was not working which they replaced on day two or three. During my visit, before the maid finally cleaned, I had to make three calls -- one for towels, one for toilet tissue and a third for decafe coffee. When I realized the refridgerator was not working I went to the ice machine for ice and that wasn't working either. For the amount of money I was paying, all of these things should have been in order.
- 4/5
The breakfast was very good! Food good, service excellent. The location in the Gaslight District we didn't particularly like. Very few restaurants nearby that we would consider eating in, quite a few homeless on the streets, quite a few businesses closed.

- 5/5
Beautiful hotel with great restaurant and bar in the lobby area. Wonderful restoration of an historic landmark-- fun to stay in a piece of history. The parking can't be on site, so your choice is the very convenient or expensive valet service, or park in a garage about a block/ half block away.
- 5/5
Awesome
- 1/5
The hotel overbooked, did not honor our reservation weeks in advance, informed mid-day during travel to the hotel but said they were aware of the issue days beforehand. Completely disappointed with the attitude of the staff and absolute disregard for the inconvenience.
- 5/5
Overall great experience. Staff was excellent
- 4/5
Nice and clean
- 5/5
Love the hotel. Wish it had onsite parking.
- 5/5
Excellent location, very clean!
- 5/5
The property is in the old bank and lots of history here. Bar and restaurant were good for the food Id tried. The only downside I wittiness is the Homeless that are in the business district which seem to be a problem in San Diego no matter where I went. Overall good stay and you just have to step around the folks on the street.
- 5/5
Really cool location based in an old bank, with the bank vault still intact. Convenient gaslamp district location makes any destination walkable.
- 5/5
Bottom line this hotel is beautiful and was an amazing find for someone like me who loves historical places. If I return to San Diego I will heavily consider staying again!
- 5/5
Amazing location and hotel!
- 5/5
While the hotel is very nice, I sometimes felt unsafe walking around the property
- 5/5

Thumbs up.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, good location
- 4/5
Ancient building with more than 100 years, enjoy it.
- 2/5
Front desk staff seemed uninterested. Hotel elevators and common areas were very scuffed/dirty. The room floor and walls were dirty. Glass and mirrors were dusty with streaks. Carpet had stains and what appeared to be feces embedded into certian parts of the carpet. The room also had a wet bar sink that made a loud, rhythmic popping sound the entire stay. We were not acknowledged as guests, let alone as vip guests. We did not received any vip benfits other than be charged $17 for two vottles of water that we had to walk down the the front desk ourselves to retrieve. For a point of reference, we booked their concierge level suite with a high floor city view... we were put in a crap room, on the 5th floor right next to the elevator (literally we could open our room door and see the elevators) The view from our room was of the mechanicals of the hotel.. not a good experience. Avoid this hotel. It's such a shame.. a historic luxury hotel like this should never be allowed to fall into such disrepair.
- 5/5
Hotel was better than expected. The rooms were well taken care and very nice looking. Staff was friendly and very attentive. Very good experience overall.
- 5/5
Highly recommend
- 5/5
Such a beautiful location
- 5/5
it was nice and safe
- 5/5
Loved this hotel
- 3/5
Customer service was okay. The valet people were great. Valet was 65$ a night with no really close options for parking. All of downtown is expensive. The homeless are everywhere screaming on the streets. Our window was covered and we could not see out or get much daylight. We complained and they could not move us. On our second night there our tv randomly stopped working at 9:30 pm. A service person came and we had to be moved rooms. We were then moved to a bigger room with a window that you could see the city view. It was a little insulting that the room was sitting empty when had asked for another when we just checked in.
- 5/5
All service was excellent
- 5/5
Awesome location
- 3/5
Parking is $65 valet only which is fine but we even called to let them know we would be down and it took way over 20 minutes, first host was not nice no customer service skills he gave us a room on the 10th floor seemed as if no one has cleaned that room in weeks it was dusty and full of fingerprints all over the table and door. Requested a room change by second clerk he was nice and accommodating second room was allot cleaner.
- 4/5
The valet staff was great and very helpful.
- 3/5
Original room was dirty, had dirty socks behind curtain, eyelash extensions on the sink, and hand/face prints on windows. There was also hair all over the bathroom.
- 5/5
Room was nice and clean. Very spacious. Would recommend to stay
- 3/5
It was fine. Central location to eateries and bars.
- 3/5
This hotel appears to have construction on going, and it is a bit dated. There were protective coverings on the floor on my level. The location is fine, but there are many other hotels in the area, so look elsewhere.
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly. The housekeeper elena or lenna was amazing. She was so pleasant and helpful. We got everything we needed. The valets were timely and professional. Check in was easy. Good stay.
- 5/5
First time staying at this property. Loved everything about this historical building. The rooms are very quiet. The staff is wonderful. Alexa, Max, and Veronica were all so friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay. Will be back next time we are in San Diego.
- 5/5
Great stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed sitting at the bar.
- 5/5
Great hotel, convenient, great rooms, with a good layout and decent size. Central location and friendly staff.
- 4/5
Very clean and comfortable. We did wake up to the smell of cigarette smoke in the night. Not the hotel’s fault. Parking is bad. 65$ for valet and no other choice but street parking.
- 5/5
This property is gorgeous! The staff is friendly and helpful. We had a voucher for breakfast both days we stayed which was nice. The food was good and so was the service. This hotel is close to so many great restaurants, comedy clubs and the Shout House. We were able to park our car and walk to all of the local venues we wanted to visit on our stay which made for a very relaxing weekend. I will definitely be back & I will stay here again!

The vintage experience of the hotel was great. Nick at the lounge area was super friendly and helpful
- 5/5
It was amazing
- 5/5
Safe and very quiet
- 5/5
I loved it!
- 5/5
very quiet and comfortable
- 3/5
My 2 friends and I loved staying here. The hotel is beautiful and is right in the middle of everything in Gaslamp. The only thing I will say is the my hotel room did not have a bathroom door & my 2 guests and I were very uncomfortable having to share a bathroom like that. We also got woken up by security at 3:30am claiming we had a noise complaint when we were already asleep but the security guard kept claiming it was us. That was incredibly rude & inappropriately from the securities part. Besides that the staff at valet & check in made everything incredibly smooth & easy.
- 5/5
Nice hotel, nice rooms. Just a walk down to the gaslamp. A lot of homeless at night unfortunately but they do keep the doors locked which makes you feel super safe. We enjoyed our stay!
- 4/5
The building is nice, the food was good!
- 4/5
The hotel is nice, the room was clean but not detail, the bathroom sink too small, there is no complementary water, the food is very good
- 2/5
Staff was nice but had a bit of a attitude while trying to be fake nice , the parking was extremely horrible , thy offer $65 valet parking , we parked in another parking structure also $40 a night and we had to walk with our luggage’s , bags , other items which was very inconvenient and a lot of homeless people around , the room got cold and the central heater did not work so the room was cold at night , the shower stayed cold and no warm water . It was overall not a great experience at this hotel, the location to gaslamp was convenient but that’s the only thing I can say I enjoyed
- 5/5
Very nice old-school hotel in a beautiful former bank.
- 5/5
The room was beautiful and we had the best view!
- 5/5
is near to Gaslamp street
- 1/5
The overall hotel was ok. The bed and sofa bed along with pillows were horrific. We couldn’t get a nights of sleep because of the constant tossing and turning. The beds were so springy that you feel like you’re lying on top of metal springs. Pillows had no supports….was a restless night
- 5/5
Such a special and historic building! Rooms are spacious and well appointed. Loved the gym and the vault conference room!! Breakfast was a terrific deal. Pool table also fun. Perfect location. Used spotHero to find a great deal on an in/out parking close by.
- 4/5
The room is very comfortable. But it doesn't have parking and they don't have enough staff to clean the room.
- 5/5
Nice choice!
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel and sweet staff members!
- 5/5
Beautifully preserved historic building right in downtown San Diego. The architecture in the lobby is stunning. Great location, great service. Parking is limited unless you are willing to pay $65 for valet.
- 5/5
Super friendly & super clean
- 5/5
Attractive historical downtown hotel conveniently located within walking distance of most of the Gaslamp district. Valet parking was pricey but convenient. Staff was courteous and the rooms were clean, although small. Overall, very satisfying experience.
- 5/5
Beautiful place to stay, excellent service
- 3/5
Hotel was beautiful and in a good location but the hotel doesn't have parking and they will charge you $65 each night for valet parking! This is too high and we didn't expect that. In the hallway in 4th floor (where we had room) we saw a dead cockroach! and some hair in our towels and in bath top and around sink. In general cleanliness was not too bad. but I don't think I would come back again.
- 5/5
Lovely staff and facility. They take hospitality to a new level. I enjoyed every minute of my stay enjoying Christmas with my family who traveled in from the east coast for a holiday work event. My trip and experience was unforgettable.

The property was excellent except that they forgot my gift . Only received my gift after I filled out the survey.

- 5/5
Beautiful hotel situated next to everything you want to do

Check-in was quick and staff made us feel special. The room was spacious, clean and quiet. We also liked the location and everything was in walking distance.
