Reviews
The hotel is generally well-liked for its cleanliness, comfortable beds, and convenient location near various attractions. Guests appreciate the friendly staff and reasonable price. However, parking is a significant issue, with limited on-site spaces and street parking sometimes difficult to find. Noise, either from traffic or neighboring rooms, is another common complaint.
- Clean rooms and comfortable beds

Very minor complaints ... room could've used a microwave oven, and the bathroom sink was very small (easy to splash water all over, and bump your head on the wall if you're just washing your face). Read reviews saying parking was limited, and it is, but I always was able to park in the motel lot ... and there is plenty of street parking, if you need it. Would I stay there again? Absolutely!
- 4/5
Clean.
- 4/5
A clean and cost-effective place to sleep. The clerk was friendly and efficient. Parking is a major problem.
- 5/5
Great location and excellent rates. Starbucks and Denny’s very close by. Clean, spacious and great A/C. The only downside is parking. There are 6 spaces in front which were occupied while I was there, otherwise it’s neighborhood parking which is more available about 5 - 6 blocks away. Easier to find a spot before 5PM, when everyone gets home from work. If arriving later, plan to double park for check-in and unloading, then search for parking.
- 5/5
I like staying here because it's central to North Park and Hillcrest, and it's clean and has free parking...though it's first come first served with only 6 or so spots. This is a basic, no frills motel. I like that it has mini fridges in the rooms. But no microwaves unfortunately. The other downside (at least for me) was the TVs are older and don't have Airplay or screen mirroring capabilities. But HDMI worked so bring a cable if you need to cast or stream. Other than that, it's just a great little basic, clean, updated motel that's convenient and not too expensive.
- 3/5
Loud, might have been my room, but it was loud.
- 5/5
Nice room. Clean and well kept
- 5/5
Very nice room and very helpful and friendly staff. Parking is right in front and the location is very central
- 5/5
Very clean, safe, quiet room!! Would stay there again.
- 3/5
The ac units are difficult to operate because they are too high. You can’t operate the controls without standing on a chair.
- 5/5
Clean and the guy at the front desk is very friendly
- 3/5
Only thing thinner than walls were the comforters. Everything else was serviceable. Very limited parking.
- 5/5
Clean room Simple No usb outlets Walkable spots to eat and drinks
- 5/5
We had a great stay here. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The location is great for us since it’s near my daughter, but it’s great in general. The staff was kind and attentive.
- 5/5
Clean room. Quiet experience. Friendly staff. Lots of amenities in the surrounding area too.
- 4/5
No elevator
- 5/5
Great place for a "just sleep" place. Everything you need is in the immediate neighborhood.
- 5/5
Nice and clean. Close to everything.
- 4/5
Room was not cleaned one day. There is no parking.
- 4/5
We were really pleased with everything about our one night suite stay except for when we were ready to leave. There are approximately 6 parking spots on the premises directly in front of the manager’s office. When we got to our truck we noticed a deep and long scratch along the passenger side of the truck.
- 4/5
Nice location
- 5/5
The rooms are spotless, everything very clean and fresh smelling. The air conditioning is a wall unit so it is a bit noisy as well as the people staying in the rooms above on the second floor. Other than that, it is a lovely place to stay, everyone very accommodating and the hotel is in a great location near many restaurants, coffee shops and fun shopping.
- 4/5
Room was fine. My only gripe. Parking. Took me 20 minutes to find a spot somewhere near the hotel.

Not your average "Motel". Our room was super clean, (Maybe the most important element of any stay). The room was exactly as expected, relatively small and not a lot of frills. But...the ownership went well beyond any other motel I've been to by making sure that there was good bedding, adequate pillows and blankets, nice size TV along with access to plenty of channels, plenty of toiletries and good water pressure in the shower. Additionally, the room has some nice finishing touches such as Crown Moldings and high quality wood shutters. The few "less than great" comments I can make would be that the AC is a bit noisy on startup, (but pumps cold air out like a champ), and because it's close to the street, you will get some ambient street noise, (not overwhelming). The area that the property sits at is in a very up and coming part of San Diego. Lots of food choices within walking distance and a short Uber to Downtown, Little Italy, The Gaslamp, Balboa Park, Old Town or the waterfront (to name a few). I am pro level traveler and I give this property a BIG THUMBS UP. If your looking for a good place to base your San Diego Adventure from, this place checks all the boxes. If your looking for a resort property or intend to hang out at the hotel all day, I suggest upgrading your budget and book appropriately. I for one like to be out exploring and taking in the city and culture. I will definitely stay at the Berkshire Motor Hotel again. My wife was happy with the property as well.
- 5/5
Very comfortable room and close to cool restaurants
- 1/5
There’s only 5 parking spots in the entire hotel. Basically no parkings.
- 4/5
ow much know how long it’s gonna get me so I’m just enough to continue trip. You wanna do like 15
- 5/5
Friendly staff and clean rooms. Close to restaurants.
- 5/5
I am a returning guest. The room and property were extremely clean, pride in ownership is very apparent. My stay was for 8 days so was assigned one of the larger rooms on property. Staff is very friendly and recognize that I am a repeat guest.
- 5/5
The gentleman that runs the hotel is very professional and polite. Always willing to help out. The entrance to the lobby is always open and very inviting. The lighting around the outside of the hotel creates a nice ambiance. The room is set up to be fully functional, window you can open with nice wooden shades, all night ice machine and laundry machine. This is a great place to stay if you are traveling for work or fun; bus stop, convenience store, and restaurants within two blocks on each side. Just a half mile from downtown University Heights (Park Blvd.).
- 5/5
Very nice,
- 4/5
clean and suitable.
- 3/5
Parking is very limited, though the staff was very helpful in finding a spot on the street.
- 4/5
The manager was helpful in locating my lost keys. Turned out I left them at the front desk and was able to recognize them at sight. Of course I retrieved them only after I tore every inch of the room and surrounding outside. It would saved me some sanity if he had only left me a text or even called to ask about keys left at the front desk. One demerit: lack of courtesy towards guests. Thanks. T
- 5/5
I've stayed at the Berkshire Motel several times due to its great location, well maintained, clean and quiet motel. I enjoy my stay each time.
- 3/5
The man was nice and helpful. The wife was leas helpful.
- 5/5
Clean. Quiet big room. Not enough parking however. Very nice workers
- 5/5
Spotless room
- 5/5
Everything as expected
- 5/5
When I visit family I need a place near North Park, and for years had been staying at the motels nearby on the Hotel Circle. The Berkshire Motel is everything the Hotel Circle motels are not. Clean, updated, quiet, walkable, and I felt very safe in that location.
- 1/5
Walls are very thin and I heard different people snoring. The say parking is available but they don’t have enough and people were paring in stalls that were not staying at the hotel. I will not stay there again.
- 5/5
Clean, very chill easy check in
- 5/5
Friendly staff. Nice clean room, great price.
- 5/5
Place was amazing for the price. Great service as well.
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff.
- 3/5
Thin walls and dirty floors, but adequate or I suppose expected for a motel. Air conditioning worked. The water pressure was terrible. Very convenient location.
- 5/5
Nice place. Parking directly in front of unit. Clean and quiet.
- 5/5
Great spot
- 5/5
This was my last of 4 hotels on a tour around San Diego and the desert and arguably the best one! It was exactly as advertised. The room was tidy and clean and appeared newly renovated with hard surface flooring, lovely bathroom tiling and tasteful decor. The bed, while not high class hotel standard, was comfortable. I had the room closest to the street and while I heard traffic during the day it did not interrupt my sleep. They only have 6 parking spots but I had no trouble getting one and there is nearby street parking. It's handy to lots of restaurants and the price was very reasonable. It was the only place I stayed that I could plug in a couple of devices without moving furniture and unplugging lamps! The Wifi worked great. My only small gripe was that the reservation says you need to contact them the day before to arrange checkin as they are not always staffed and when I did that I didn't get a reply back. There was someone there when I arrived so it was no problem.
- 5/5
Extremely clean, older building but many updates, very pleasant and helpful staff
- 4/5
The room was very clean and very comfortable. The staff was great. It was a little noisy outside because the street is very busy. I would stay there again.
- 3/5
Xxx
- 5/5
Friendly staff. The room was extremely clean and property well cared for.
- 3/5
The airconditioning. It was spotty and unreliable
- 5/5
And north park
- 2/5
Room itself was alright. The walls are very thin so its hard to sleep if your neighbors are too loud.
- 1/5
Concert was cancel on saturday same day i going the concert and i call you to try to cancel agent was very helpful I try to contact to the hotel and they never anwser also no way to leave a message because mail box was full The hotel call.me around 900pm and ask me if i will check in i try to talk to the lady call me and i explain about it she was rude I honestly may be i never use your application again
- 5/5
Amazing friendly staff
- 5/5
It's not my first stay here. I always choose this hotel for being clean and well taken care of
- 5/5
Clean comfy and easy
- 5/5
Loved it
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
Comfortable bed and pillows, everything was great.
- 4/5
Free parking but limited spaces with tight parking spots. Room is very basic but clean. Can sometimes be noisy because the property is so small.
- 5/5
Awesome
- 4/5
Small parking area. Hotel well situated. When in San Diego, I will return to the Birkshire.
- 5/5
It was great
- 5/5
Staff Very Friendly
- 5/5
Thank you.
- 2/5
The room was updated and clean. Small. The room had a fridge but no microwave. There are only 4 parking spots if you don’t check in early or on time you can’t park here. I checked in closer to 8 pm and had to park 3 blocks away. Took 20 min to find parking. I asked if they could match the cheaper rate for that night and “that was not possible”. It was the most reasonable priced place to stay in SD but not without the inconvenience of parking for about $30 dollars more I would have been happier somewhere else.
- 4/5
Excellent but parking major issue
- 5/5
Great staff clean rooms. Good location:)
- 5/5
Extremely clean and very affordable. Would definitely stay there time and time again!!!
- 5/5
Clean property. All we needed for a short day in the nice area. Only downside was inability to completely darken the room at night.
- 5/5
Always pleasant!
- 5/5
The room was clean & the front desk was attentive. Definitely within walking distance of a local pub & different eateries. I would stay again.
- 2/5
Two days later and I’m battling a kinked neck from the hard bed and pillow. Comforter had a dark print on it so who knows if it was clean or sanitized properly - but the room overall seemed clean. Impossible to sleep due to the air conditioner loudly kicking on and off and cars going by. Not enough parking for the rooms. They say there’s plenty of street parking … sure, if you win the lottery and find a space. At check in there was a glass-like partition for safety. I’ve only seen these in movies. Felt very unwelcoming.
- 5/5
Property is clean, well maintained and in a good location.
- 1/5
Poor service, not even toilet paper
- 5/5
It's clean, affordable, and convenient.
- 5/5
I loved my stay here. It’s perfect for the price. Very convenient. My only negative was there’s not much parking on site and the spaces they have a very small. But the hotel is great. I’ll definitely be back.
- 4/5
was a nice stay
- 3/5
There was no blanket in the bed. only a bed spread. yuck!!
- 3/5
I arrived late. I think I woke the manager up. The remote was not in sync with the TV so I had to call for help. Parking can be a problem as there are only 4 spaces and the manager uses one.
- 5/5
I was very happy with this choice. We had a 1 night stay and this was an affordable option that was better than my expectations. Possibly cleanest motel or inexpensive hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The people were nice, the decor was nice, and it had great water pressure in the shower, by the way. I would choose it again.
- 4/5
Clean and quiet.
- 5/5
I thought it was so cute n cozy tucked away here in San Diego. Staff was friendly and courteous and was very helpful even though we were a late check in. Thank you! Will definitely be staying again
- 4/5
The place is unique and affordable for the area. Our only gripe was the thin walls that allowed us to hear our neighbors as they had a bit of a party after the bars closed. Loud voices went undeterred by management well past 3:00 am. But it happens. I’m not mad at my host so much as my self-involved neighbors.
- 4/5
The housekeeping staff were excellent and very friendly, the room was outstanding.
- 5/5
Great for our 1 night stay.
- 5/5
Great stay and great location. It says motel but it's so much more! Would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
I stay here on average two or three times a year when in town and it's always consistently good. Clean rooms, friendly staff.
- 4/5
Clean room, parking isn't good
- 5/5
Hotel was great but parking was hard
- 4/5
newly renovated, very nice looking.
- 5/5
great hotel and staff
- 5/5
Great location within walking distance from the places we wanted to visit.
- 5/5
The hotel was very clean and comfortable.
- 3/5
Very quiet, great location, had to park 3 blocks away. Pillows were great, bed was hard. Overall, it was pretty good.
- 4/5
Place was super clean, AC works, Parking SUCKS and the lady at the front desk was being difficult, we asked a question and she replied "Did you not hear me?" All rude
- 5/5
Was very clean staff was friendly
- 1/5
Received an email 2 days prior to staying stating they only have 6 parking spots but suggesting street parking, advising street sweeping on Mondays from 1am-5am. This is incorrect-it is Tuesday. At least 9 of us received hefty parking citations as there is NOT a "no parking/street sweeping" sign posted which I will take up with the city, however if the facility is going to send out an email with information such as this ENSURE IT IS CORRECT.
- 4/5
road work during my stay, so it was noisy thru the night
- 5/5
Room was great. A very comfortable quiet stay. I will definitely book here again the next time I need to stay in this neighborhood.
- 1/5
Terrible, dirty and with a strong bad smell. I couldn't sleep all night and when I woke up I had a rash on my face and a terrible allergy.
- 5/5
First time stay and would stay again.
- 5/5
I am a returning guest, property was extremely clean, definitely shows pride in ownership. A very convenient location.
- 5/5
Great! I recommend!
- 5/5
Could hear trucks and people arguing at night.
- 4/5
The road noise was loud at time. But clean room and comfortable bed
- 5/5
Just a quick overnight stay. Comfy and clean, no frills and fairly priced
- 4/5
It was a nice spot room was small. Good for one or two people. If you just using it for sleep
- 4/5
The hotel was good. Great if you really consider the price and location, but not amazing. It was a fine stay. Staff was nice, and the rooms were cleaned daily. It is a small hotel with not very many amenities. However, it is walking distance to a lot of great bars and restaurants, plus the Lafayette hotel whos lobby and must ammeneties are open to the public. The only complaint I would say I had was the noise. You'll see many others complain about it and they are right. There were loud cars and loud people stumbling home after a night out. If a lot of street noise bothers you, this probably isn't the place for you. We got on just fine after we turned on the fan for some added white noise. Other than that, everything went well.
- 5/5
Great stay
- 3/5
Upon check-in we were put in a room that was already occupied. Room was clean and seemed to be updated recently. Neighborhood was a bit suspicious. A solid 2.5 stars.
- 4/5
Was a fine place except for parking. They only have 6 spaces for 10 rooms, and street parking can be tough in the area... especially late in the evening.
- 4/5
Convenient place and clean.
- 5/5
I've enjoyed my stay for the last 3 weeks, housekeeping is amazing. They keep it really clean and their fun to talk to.
- 5/5
The Staff here is very helpful and really professional, I've been staying here for 3 weeks. Thank you Berkshire motel
- 5/5
Clean and quiet. The owners are really nice as well. Can’t say anything bad about this place really. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
I have always enjoyed this place
- 5/5
The Staff is outstanding and really professional and keeps you room clean. I would recommend this place because it's central locations.
- 5/5
The Staff here is very professional and they keep this motel clean.
- 5/5
It is a very clean, comfortable motel and you can feel the ocean breeze. It is in a convenient location for entertainment. Thank you.
- 5/5
Good value. Clean room and comfy bed.
- 4/5
I asked for a quiet room and they put me in a room that was very quiet and comfortable, so I was very pleased about that. It wasn’t far from the naval hospital. Dennys was right across the street. McDonald’s was a block away. The room was nice. The price was perfect.
- 5/5
I had great time there. Clean and silence
- 5/5
Cool place, awesome location.
- 5/5
thank you for helping me with my air conditioner
- 5/5
King sized bed on first floor accessible to all
- 5/5
Well run
- 5/5
I was impressed with the room
- 5/5
It was really good for the price compared to other hotels, I traveled by Uber I understand the parking situation is difficult but if you are traveling using taxi services this hotel is perfect for you. Also very nice service lady very thankful for her staying up when needed.
- 4/5
Quiet, clean and respectful overall. A great place to rest and recharge. Coffee in morning is good as well.
- 5/5
Just making sure you don’t get a room downstairs right across from the front desk. You will have zero privacy and hear everything when guests check in and out.
- 5/5
This is a small, very basic hotel but each time we've stayed here the rooms are clean and the beds comfy. The price is also good for the San Diego area. The only down side is parking. If you are in your room early, not a problem. But the later you come to the hotel the harder it will be to find a parking spot. Hotel has a spot for five or six cars. It is located in a semi-residential area and the street is always full of resident vehicles. We returned one night after a Padres game and drove around and around the block and was unable to find a place to park.
- 4/5
It good
- 5/5
Nice stay. Very attentive service.
- 5/5
Great!
- 4/5
Clean property
- 5/5
Great little place to stay, will be my go-to in Santa Cruz from now on. Check in was easy, friendly and very helpful staff! Great room at a great price for this area!
- 3/5
It was a nice stay for the price. Walls are very thin and not sure comforter ever gets washed between guests. (Gross)
- 5/5
Great location, small but nice and modern. Beds were stiff though.
- 4/5
It was a bed to sleep I
- 4/5
Nothing else
- 3/5
The fluorescent lighting in the rooms is very unpleasant. There should also be a desk lamp. The limited parking is a problem as well.
- 4/5
Great authentic mexican restaurant across the st. Quixote . Highly reccomend
- 4/5
Good utility stay.
- 3/5
Rooms are very small but location was convenient to many restaurants & bars & shopping. Bed was comfy, parking is limited but we stayed for three nights and only had to park offsite on street one night. Overall was good for weekend getaway with my daughter
- 5/5
Nice modern clean affordable hotel in a great area.
- 2/5
Hotel room was clean, but walls seemed thin because we could hear the every room surrounding us even from room above, getting sleep without being woken up my the room above and next door was impossible
- 5/5
Goooood
- 5/5
The place was very nice. I stayed there for 4 days and no problems. I had a safe and calm stay
- 5/5
Parking is bad but other than that it was great
- 4/5
I was very pleasantly surprised by the property and room. Room was clean and looked newly renovated — except for the shower head could be replaced. Probably the most comfortable bed pillows I’ve ever slept on in my life, and I am very picky. Didn’t hear other rooms or people very much. Lots of food options nearby from all the fast food to cute local sit down places. Only real downside was the noise from El Cajon Blvd was quite a lot even at night, but turning the A/C unit to fan only overnight helped drown out a lot of the sound, but couldn’t really sleep in too long or take an afternoon nap. Overall, would absolutely stay again.
- 3/5
Average, but overpriced.
- 5/5
Clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Had a good stay. Very reasonable prices for rooms. The location is very convienent to various areas around the city. Not much interwction from the staff but they seemed ok. The rooms werew nicely decorated and clean.
- 3/5
It’s OK if you’re just looking for a place to stay the night, it was clean. It’s a motel, not a hotel.
- 1/5
Big problenm No parking only for 6 cars,in the post say wiht kitchen is not true, the floor in the roon is not clean,
- 3/5
Very little parking available, had to park almost a block away in residential area. Lady asked "how many with you, just me..then why did you book a room with 2 beds. I told her it was the only option available, she quickly spews ....no visitors" Calm down Lady. I paid $355 for one night, I'll have a party in there if i choose. Later when I left to get some food a tall slender mam standing on the steps was watching me like a hawk, im assuming it was her husband.
- 3/5
Bed was hard and the curtains let so much light in the neighbors play there tv so loud all night bath tub stopper wouldn't shut so had to rig it so we could take a bath
- 5/5
It’s a gem of a hotel in North Park….much better than most. Clean and updated. Only negative is the tight on-site parking available.
- 5/5
Good
- 4/5
The property was clean and well kept. The person at the front desk lacked customer service skills. I was looking for coffee in the morning and he couldn’t help me at all! Other than that it was a pleasurable stay. Housekeeping Staff was very helpful.
- 5/5
parking is a hit or miss, you’ll be able to park your vehicle at the motel if you get lucky. staff can be stingy at times. other than that, I’ve been here 3 times and never had issues with the rooms I’ve stayed in so far.
- 5/5
Very nice and convient location, very quiet and comfortable. Check in was quick.
- 4/5
Small hotel with freash, neat rooms. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. Parking is limited and the spaces are narrow.
- 5/5
Very clean and modern. Small rooms but very surprising!! Loved it!! ❤️
- 5/5
Close to restaurants and parks.
- 3/5
Not enough parking, had to park a block over
- 5/5
Stayed one night for a concert at The Observatory North Park, which is about a 20 minute walk away. Great place for a short stay. Room was clean, bed comfy, coffee maker in the room, reasonable price. All I needed!
- 4/5
As for the room, it looks like it was recently remodeled. The king bed was comfortable, plenty of pillows. The towels are a bit rough and worn looking. The area, although it is near everything, is quite noisy starting at around 5a.m. Other than that, I really liked this place.
- 5/5
It was conveniently located for my needs
- 5/5
The staff was very nice and room was very clean. Only stayed one night but will definitely keep it in mind for future trips.
- 5/5
Nice clean room
- 4/5
The location is great and the rooms are kept very clean.
- 5/5
As expected
- 5/5
The hotel was centrally located to where I needed to be and it provided comfort at a reasonable cost. My on only issue is that the hotel only offers 6 parking spots. We got lucky and scored a spot but otherwise that would have been very inconvenient.
- 4/5
It is located near the Observatory and other areas of entertainment.
- 4/5
Parking is rough, but we knew that - if no parking, spaces available blocks away. There is a light in the shower, but no switch. Couldn't figure out how to turn light on - had to shower in dark.
- 5/5
We got complimentary updates. It was a bungalow and we liked it!
- 3/5
The room needed a place to sit.
- 4/5
Definitely a pleasant stay for what it was. My room was super clean and comfortable. Just make sure you bring ear plugs! Noise from the street was very audible all night.
- 5/5
The person at the front desk went out of their way to help us find parking. That was really nice of them.
- 2/5
I was in a room that had two windows that faced a wall approximately 12 inches away from the window. It felt like a cell. The room had not been dusted for a long time. There were no directions for the heating and air conditioning or the TV. There was an ice bucket but no ice machine. I finally found out that the ice machine was a whole building away.
- 4/5
I have stayed here many times and found the location and service good. Parking is tricky because they don't have much.
- 5/5
Great value for the money. Clean room. Safe location. Very close to Denny's and other restaurants. Few reserved parking spots, but on-street parking on street-lighted busy street next door worked fine. My room was on the corner of building with lots of street noise which might have bothered light sleepers.
- 4/5
it was clean
- 4/5
There is limited parking, which they warn you about ahead of arrival. The street parking was filled up quickly. The neighborhood was very nice and clean. So many people walking around dueing the day showing that the neighborhood is nice and felt safe. Very close to the strip of bars on el cajon blvd. Very clean. Theres a fridge. The nicest motel we have ever stayed at. Felt cleaner than an hotel we have ever stayed at. The bleach smell was VERY strong though. But if thats the only negative, i consider that a win!!
- 5/5
It was great, very comfy and the area was peaceful. The only thing the room was missing is a microwave. But overall 10/10.
- 2/5
We had stained pillow sheets and towels, as well as finger nails on the floor. I really wanted to like this place :(
- 5/5
This is the second time I have stayed at the Berkshire motel. Everything about it is old but it’s clean uncomfortable. The person who checked me in was so nice and even helped me with my heavy suitcase up the stairs. I would recommend this place.
- 4/5
Older style place but seemed recently renovated. Clean place near a lot of restaurants. Parking is very limited but was not an issue for us. We enjoyed our stay and will stay there again.
- 5/5
Perfect, walking distance accommodations if attending a concert at the Observatory. Well maintained property and clean rooms! I’ll be back :)
- 4/5
Was convenient to area we needed to be. If don’t get there early and grab one of the six parking spots, finding street parking can be challenging in street cleaning days.
- 1/5
Customer service very rude
- 3/5
Room was adequate
- 1/5
They charged me $308 and refused to check me in by saying there was no payment paid when I had the receipt to prove, Lisa at the front desk didn't take a look at what I wanted to show her. Worse thing is that she said they didn't charge me but I never told her my booking confirmation number or did I give her my name
- 5/5
