Highly recommended

First night, we were first told there was no room for us. Then, after arguing with the staff, we we’re knowingly placed in a room with one bed, a strong foul odor and a water leak in the bathroom with an inch of water standing in the bathroom floor. It wasn’t until the 3rd night that they moved us out of the foul-smelling room into the room we paid for, which was a room with 2 beds. After that, our stay was fine, but not great. I will not stay here again. In the future, I’ll be looking for either hotels not run by Wyndham, or an Air BnB.

If you're looking for peace, tranquility, and a breathtaking view, this is the perfect place to stay. The scenery alone is worth the visit and truly steals the show. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and equipped with thoughtful amenities like an ironing board and hair dryer. The layout offers a cozy living room area separate from the bed, creating a welcoming space to relax. The décor blends a charming vintage feel with modern touches, giving the room plenty of character. Overall, the stunning views are what make this place unforgettable.

The door locks didn’t work, so we couldn’t access one of our rooms and had to be moved around to 2 other rooms. The beds were not very comfortable. The paint was peeling in the room and even worse in the bathroom. The carpet was old and fraying in places. There was only one person at the desk to help guests, so check in took a while. When the door locks didn’t allow us into our room, I had to wait in the line again to get help. I felt really bad for the employee at the desk that had to deal with extremely upset guests over a third party payment. There was not a manager that could assist them.

The best thing about this property is the view! Amazing view! No frills, but they price it right. Right on interstate 81, which makes it easy to get to Virginia Tech for a game when you can't find anything closer to Blacksburg. The people at the desk are very friendly and ready to help!

I booked and paid for a room for Friday evening, May 15th at the Howard Johnson Hotel & Conference Center in Salem Va. . When we arrived at the hotel approx 5:15pm the manager/owner would not release the room to me. He was the rudest person I have ever dealt with. He said I needed to call you at hotels.com to get you to release the funds, he absolutely said this was our responsibility. I did call your number at least 5 times and could not get a live person even though we waited on hold for at least 15 minutes. We did offer to pay directly, but he wanted his "today" rate which was over which was 3 times higher than the reservation rate. At that point we knew that we were getting scammed, classic case of bait and switch.! Needless to say, since it was Va Tech Graduation weekend, no other hotels in the area were booked solid, we had no other choice to return home. I am missing my granddaughter's graduation today. How absolutely horrible!!! I will never use Hotels.com again, and I would like my $$ returned.

This hotel is for people who needs something for the night while traveling. Room smelled disgusting. Didn’t book for breakfast and thank god😂. Never staying here again and won’t recommend to anyone. Front desk personnel were nice. That was the only good thing about this hotel.

The free breakfast was also disappointing: only boxed cereal, no yogurt or eggs, and the waffles tasted like cardboard. The staff were courteous, but I was very uncomfortable when an employee offered to rent me a room “off the books” for $220 cash. It did not feel legitimate, and it made me nervous. The room had maintenance issues as well. The toilet handle had to be held down for several seconds just to flush. Another concern was that the back side of the property appeared to have long‑term residents living there, which made the environment feel less like a motel and more like a residential complex. This added to my discomfort. Overall, while the room itself was acceptable, the condition of the property, lack of basic amenities, questionable staff behavior, and general atmosphere made the stay uncomfortable. I would not choose to stay here again.

I would not recommend this place to anyone! This hotel needs a complete remodel!! The bathroom sink was clogged, door key did not work after the first day, the continental breakfast is a joke, and the room could have definitely been cleaner!

I did not stay there. The room was dirty (the sheets had stains). The TV did not have a plug and the dresser drawers would not open.

Close to highway, you can hear the cars running all night. Hard to fall asleep. Good price if you just want to spend a night as a stop. Breakfast has very limited choices. Not appealing to have appetite.

Glad it was only 1 night!!!! I could smell the mold.

Heater wouldn’t work. Smelled horrible. Manager stalked us. Charged for a service dog. Sinks wouldn’t drain. Phone wouldn’t work. Couldn’t get WiFi. Had to sleep in my suv to stay warm. Shower wouldn’t get warm either.

Those roaches crawling down the walls in the refrigerator the windows were absolutely filthy the paint was peeling off the bathroom wall there was a hole where the door knob had knocked the hole in the wall in the bathroom and the vents needed to be cleaned.

The heat temperature varied wildly. The rooms looked nothing like the pictures and were filthy. The manager changed our reservation without consulting us. The fitness room was trashed and had no fitness equipment at all. There was no breakfast. The dining area had absolutely nothing in it.

Original room had crap in the sink with no stopper in it. Only 7 channels on the tv. Moved to another room on 2nd floor. Room key did not work correctly. Took about 5 minutes and many tries to finally open the door. Breakfast was a joke. Cold waffles that needed toasted. Just sausage patties. Won't be staying at this place ever again!

Room was horrible. Roaches and spiders in the room. The capert was dirty and sticky. There was no free full continental breakfast. When asked the day staff at desk he told me they only have to provide coffee and one item. The building was falling apart

I liked the location as it wase located off the interstate. Had to call out to locate the staff in order to check in. The “breakfast” was nothing to write home about. The juice dispenser machine was broken. The plus is the hotel is budget friendly.

The room was filthy, and still had rubbish stuffed behind the locker from previous occupants. Curtains were full of holes and didn't close fully. Holes in the room door were filled with toilet paper. Carpet was covered in stains. The bed had only three tiny squares of material, about the thinkness of a towel, for pillows. The fridge had broken shelves, and congealed milk (I think) pooled in the bottom. The power outlet in the wash space had scorch marks. The bath was full of stains, cracks and scratches. The 'heater' in the bathroom didn't function fully on the the timer. At breakfast, there was no coffee available. The only food out was one cereal option, and some stale waffles - some of which were mouldy. The fridge with milk in felt warm inside. No staff were available at reception to raise any of these issues with. The only icemaker we could find was broken. 1st floor access to King room; quiet location with mountain views! No coffee maker in room & No cable TV ( over the air antenna ), with only 2-3 viewable channels!

King size bed with only 2 pillows, stains on comforter and shower curtain. No coffee pot or coffee in room. Dust on head board that you could write your name in it. Ladybug crawling up the wall. Carpet and curtains were still from the 1960’s.

Unfortunately this hotel was not clean. There was hair in the bathroom sink, the sheets were not clean, and the overall condition of the room was poor. The door did not latch properly without considerable effort.

I'm sure this place was nice in it's prime, the location is beautiful, but the property is worn down now and needs a remodel, everything was done in the cheapest way possible from the 2-ply toilet paper, to the pipes squeaking the whole time the water came out in the shower, to the TVs only having a few channels with extreme static, to advertizing free breakfast only to go down there and there was none. Nor was there an attendant at the desk to ask about it. It was fine to crash for a night, but def should be in the price range of a motel 6 or super 8 bc the quality just wasnt there. Nice view and easy access the morning staff was very helpful. Beds were comfortable and clean. Very outdated, TV had no channels there is no drinks to buy we got to breakfast at 9:45 not a single thing in there. Smelt very musty upon arrival and overall uneasy feeling.

The room was clean and the bed was good. However, there were no cups of any kind provided. I went to the office to ask for some, and NO ONE was on duty. No one was in the office building. The only toiletries provide were two postage stamp sized soap bars. The towels were paper thin and felt like sandpaper. An argument occurred in the parking lot late at night, and no one intervened.

This was the worst motel I've ever stayed in. No tv and they said none was available in tbe building. Furniture was dirty. Breakfast was veery. Poor..asked them to transfer my reservation and they refused and said I could try it myself. A horible experience.

I love HJ, I’ve stayed at several over past years but this one was just poor quality. Room needs work in bathroom area, needs major update. Paint chipped. Went to free breakfast at 8, which runs from 6-9 and no food! No service person around. Very disappointed since I know HJ quality is always great.

Checking in there was a party going the conference center with loud music and I couldn’t hear the desk clerk. Went to our room and the room had not been cleaned for a new guest. Had to go back to the check in desk to get a new room. After making sure we got a non-smoking room and it smelled like smoke as well and a musk smell, air was not on for a 90 degree day, dead bugs in the bathroom, hair dryer not working, and no working ice machine. Their definition for a hot breakfast was not. They did not have juice or any thing to drink and they had cold gravy and cold biscuits. There was only 4 channels to watch on the tv.

The TV didn't work. Out on entire property. The sink didn't drain. The carpet was old and worn through. The door to the room next door didn't have a lock that worked. Had to put fridge in front of it. No one working. Loud people fighting all night in parking lot and no one stopping them. Manager refused refund.

The rooms were not clean. There was not a pool. They had eggos with no pancake syrup, they was cold and hard. We asked to use the vacuum cleaner for the floor because it was dirty ans wasmt allowed to. We were very upset.

The room looked nothing like the photos online. The paint was peeling off the walls. Cigarette burns all over the side of the tub. A burned hole in the comforter. Carpet was dirty. The door lock outside the door was missing the battery cover so the batteries were exposed.

Not much, not fresh and enough to go around for our party of 6. Perhaps a rating of 3 is generous, but it was cheap.

There is nothing to like about this property. Paid around $150 per night but got frogs and ants in the room, dirty carpets, worn-out power outlets with loose connections, non-working microwave, third-class breakfast, no coffee option in the room or after breakfast in the lobby. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

The breakfast food was terrible with very few options. The room only had a double bed and had a damp smell. Most of the outlets didn't work and the TV service was out. I ill never stay here again.

Hotel is near 100 years old and looks it. Hotel is deteriorating, no ice machines, no tv. Hotel should be $49 a night.

The hotel condition is horrible. Cigarette burns all over the bathtub, burns on bedding. Wet and sticky dirty carpet. Covered up holes in bathroom door, and sink counter had parts broken out. The front of the hotel had massive chunks of concrete that were missing with exposed rebar. Surprised this place is not condemned. It is pretty rough.

The building is disintegrating, the ceiling is falling down, walls crumbing, dirty bathtub, door knob and lock were loose. This place should be torn down. We walked in and booked another hotel after seeing how horrible this place was.

Well its not a bad place to stay but needs some serious maintenence. Upon us going to the room i noticed the concrete outside of the elevator was not looking safe to me. It was like it had been raised up from side where two pieces meet. Then i get to the door of the room and the key dont work neither of them. So back to the desk and got the guy to come look at it. After he took apart the lock to fix it. ( which wasnt fixed) told me to hold in on the lock part then slide card in. Took me bout 10 mins to get it to work the next day. 5 days i stayed in this hotel and not once did i get it to work first time. So it rained one day and the 3rd floor roof was leaking through the concrete. Kinda scary if i may say. The room wasnt too bad the ac didnt seem to be super cold like i like but it did its job. Overall its convenient and optical.

Pretty average but relatively inexpensive. Fine for a roadside stop - bathroom could use some updating and just overall fixing up.

This room was adequate for the price...but breakfast is advertised everywhere...but when i got up,no one in lobby, breakfast had not been laid out. Toilet in bathroom needed to be cleaned. Bed linens and towels were clean and it was quiet and felt safe.

Staff was great,first visit,was able to check in earlier,but I knew,but was hoping to since there were but a few guests,and the fact I drove in from Ohio due to life flighting brother to Salem and Roanoke area,first room was dirty,and looked as is was falling down on the backside of hotel second visit,two days later I was charged more for room and checked in at seven that night no prorate on room,where as first visit they wanted and extra thirty five dollars to check in two hours early,second room was clean,but had no TV service,out even when we checked out at eleven,I feel as thou we should have been reimbursed a little,for lack of convenience,and having know phone in room to call office ,or appropriate seating in room , first room no chairs at all second room only a roll,chair not what was showed, to how the room was suppose to look like,and was reserved as and upgraded,by know means was that the case,so I was very disappointed,with service,that I paid for,in a time of and emergency in my family,view was great and people nice

Hotel needs some exterior upgrades. It felt a bit sketchy from the outside. Interior looks to have been painted, new decor. Bed was comfortable. Between 1 and 2am other guests were loud, fighting, in and out of cars, banging on doors and loud noises in the room. Went to check out at 6am and front door was locked. I rang the bell and after about 5 minutes a young man appeared and I told him I was checking out. He stood at the front door and took my key. I asked if I was all set and he said yes. Never offered a receipt. I walked away and he relocked the front door. Young man at check in was super nice. Though he never gave details about breakfast or any other amenities.

Check in was very easy and the staff was great even after checking in around midnight. The room was average and may need some repairs/ updates but for the price of the hotel per night what can you expect. Overall we had a great experience and would stay again if needed.

Thought it would be a decent place to stay for just the night because of the reviews, but I wouldn’t recommend. They stuck a bandaid on a hotel that needs major repairs. The keycard did not work, continental breakfast was laughable, there were cockroaches as soon as I walked in my room, the restroom is falling apart. Just wanted the night to be over. I needed to wash and the only washer and dryer were not working. Would not stay here ever again.

Once you enter the bathroom area it’s a different story. Paint peeling off the walls, toilet seat half on, cigarette burns on the bathtub, shower head sprays water out the sides and is terrible need of replacement etc. The stay was otherwise fine

Pungent airfreshener couldn't mask the foul smelling room. Rundown, and grey gravy w/week old biscuits do not make a "hot" breakfast. No ice - machine probably permanently broken, like this sad motel.
