Reviews
The Viking Motel is a clean, comfortable, and affordable option in Portland. It is located in a convenient area with easy access to public transportation, restaurants, and grocery stores. However, some guests have expressed concerns about the safety of the neighborhood. The staff is generally friendly and helpful, but there have been a few instances of poor customer service.

The ac was very loud when it was on and right next to thebed freezing my wife when it was on. Then when it was off the room would get really hot fast. The staff was rude and told me i should have requested extra bedding when i check in and had to wait till morning to receive them. The towel bar kept falling off the wall and a screw was stickng up on the edge of the threshhold into the bathroom.

We’ve stayed here multiple times. Always a nice staff and clean rooms. Easy access to where we need to go.

Clean room, no frills but comfy and warm.

Parking was free and convenient. We stayed for 4 nights and I can say that the location was always 10-15 minutes away from everywhere we needed to be. Just a few things that need improvement: the room was really dark (even with all the lights on), they don’t make your bed at all (which was very odd to me), and our room key wouldn’t work consistently (we had to get a new one 3-4 times).

Really comfortable room and facilities, great location for me and a really good price. Staff were great, booming in and out was so easy. Nice and quiet too. Id definitely return Nothing

We came to Portland for a concert that was going to end late and we didn’t want to drive three hours home. This was a very nice choice for what we needed. The motel was very quiet. Our room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable. They provided a little jar of fresh coffee grounds which we really appreciated. So much better than normal hotel coffee bags. The staff we dealt with was very nice. We would choose to stay here again. Nothing against the property, just our own little issues. My husband is 6’2 and had to almost bend in half to use the shower.

Our stay was great overall. The motel was easy to get to and in good shape. It was a perfect place to grab a few hours of sleep before heading back out. If you are looking for a clean, basic motel we can't recommend it enough.

Every time we go we appreciate the simple but well done motel these folks provide. Honestly there were no downsides to us. You could say the motel only has light amenities, but that’s also typically what I expect from a motel. It’s a great motel

Very clean room go an excellent price. If you’re looking for a cheap motel in the area, I recommend this one. There was some traffic noise and a fee painted over cracks in the walls, but it was very clean and everything worked well.

Our go-to place in Portland. Excellent value - the rooms are clean and functional. There are nearby restaurants, bars and a grocery store a few blocks away. Close to the airport. Public transportation just out the front door.

The owner allowed me to check in early with no extra charge. This retro motel is nestled in a nice neighborhood just off of main streets and freeways. The area is quiet and felt safe to walk around after dark. I was there for 5 days on business, and there are some great spots within walking distance. Futura Coffee has great pastries, Aztec Burrito, Thai Ginger, a gas station are all within 8 minutes on foot. Fred Meyer, gas, and Wendy's are nearby. My favorite was NightHawk, a cafe just up the block from the motel. The room is nice and clean, though appliances are older but clean. AC/Heater unit worked well, and the bed was comfy. Parking felt safe, and the property is well lit. Owners were nice and accommodating. I'd definitely stay here again.

Our go to place in Portland. Close to the airport, the light rail and nearby restaurants and bars. Plenty of parking when we have stayed here. Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable.
- 4/5
Very clean room although could use a paint refresh; easy check in and check out. It was nice that the room had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Room was extremely hot with heat blasting when we arrived and took quite a while to cool down!

weirdly small tv and not the best bathroom but for the price decent
- 4/5
Old school motel, clean but no recent upgrades. There was a large comfy stuffed chair which was nice except that it made the comfy desk chair inaccessible, so I had to move the stuffed chair to use the desk. Close to light rail and a market and not far from hip restaurants (easy driving distance). Easy parking. Very reasonably priced for visiting Portland but not a room you want to hang out in.

The room was clean, comfortable and staff were friendly and professional. I highly recommend if you’re visiting Portland.
- 4/5
Clean and cute property. Easy check in and out. The Max line is right out front, too! Very convenient. The beds were very firm, which was my only complaint. Next time I'll bring a mattress topper.
- 4/5
Right by the tram with great grub nearby.

Very confortable, very clean, friendly and accommodating staff. An older motel, but kept up nicely, I'm a returned customer and would stay there again.

Room was clean and very convenient to our activities in Portland. Would stay again.
- 4/5
Most notable is the location. It isn't close to any sights or scenes that PDX offers. If you don't have a car, this is not the place for you. If you do have a car and don't mind driving, the location isn't bad- close to a couple different highway ramps that can send you to the points of the compass. This appears to be in a neighborhood that is beginning to experience gentrification of a sort.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly, check in/out was painless. Nothing fancy, but room was clean and tidy, and the bed was comfortable. Was an added perk to have an actual coffee pot in the room rather than a keurig type coffee maker!
- 5/5
Staff was very friendly and respectful. Quiet neighborhood. We felt very safe staying here. Definitely returning!
- 4/5
Totally adequate. I was visiting family in the area and this is well located. Close to mass transit, bars and restaurants. Not fancy, but clean and convenient. Staff was fine- not super friendly but not rude. Again- adequate. It did the job for a decent price.
- 5/5
Clean, convenient, and hassle free.

Clean room good breakfast.
- 5/5
We were really impressed. For such a low-cost motel it was great! The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly, our room was clean, the towels were large and good quality, the mattress was a little more firm than what we usually sleep on but still comfortable, the water pressure in the shower was wonderful. The only minor things were the lack of counter space in the bathroom where the good lighting was to do makeup vs the lack of good lighting at the large table/mirror in the main room, the lack of conditioner (they did offer decent quality shampoo bar soap), and the lack of a heater in the room, which fortunately wasn't an issue for us this time because it was still warm enough to not need one. We go to Portland fairly frequently and will definitely be back!
- 5/5
Very good spot with a very good price
- 4/5
Convenient and comfortable. Sufficient for a one night stay on north side of Portland.
- 2/5
The place is next to the mono rail and a main road. My wife had trouble to sleep the first night. So the next morning, we wanted to cancel the remaining days and find another place that my wife could get a good rest. Nevertheless, the manager showed no consideration and refused to give any refund, although he had a plenty of time to rent out the room again.

Stayed here many times and will continue to do so when we are in Portland.

Room smelled of cigarette smoke. It is an old motel so may just be stuck in the walls and ceiling. Was hoping to take a bath but there was no drain plug.
- 5/5
I like the amenities for the price. I think the management works hard to make your stay comfortable in a clean space. I like the mini fridge and microwave as an added convenience
- 5/5
We stayed at the Viking Motel for 1 night in the Labour Day long weekend and were impressed by its cleanliness and spaciousness. We travelled by motor bike so at first we weren’t sure about having the bike parked out front but upon arrival and our stay we felt confident it was safe.
- 5/5
No frills Motel done right.

The Viking is one of the 1950s-era motels that are common on Interstate Avenue, from the days when it was one of the main arterials for visitors to Portland from the north. It has been renovated and well-maintained, though, and is a good choice for people looking for reasonably-priced accommodation in north Portland. It is very close to a light rail stop, and also to bike lanes and bicycle-friendly streets.
- 1/5
Additionally, the air conditioning was not functioning properly. It produced a loud noise throughout the night, making it difficult to sleep. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I cannot recommend this property.
- 5/5
The staff were absolutely wonderful and I provided a nice room for my disabled daughter and I on the first floor. The second day my key was not working and the manager actually noticed that it wasn’t working and by the time I turned around to get a new key, he had already met me in the parking lot with a new one! I have never had such great service! Room 101 was the best, it had a full kitchen, a table that had four chairs, four windows on three walls. The kitchen was stocked with every pot, pan, and utensil one could possibly want. It was a bit retro with plywood cupboards, but we don’t mind that kind of thing. The beds were very comfortable and had beautiful headboards. The sleeping area was carpeted, which was nice for doing morning stretches. The bathtub was comfortable and had a nice working plug. The hotel is on the light rail, but it was quiet day and night. Within four blocks walk, there was a Fred Meyer and multiple eating establishments. We felt very safe walking in the neighborhood during the day.
- 5/5
One of the best hotels for meeting our expectations of responsiveness of staff, safety, cleanliness, light levels, big frig and parking. I recommend but not fancy just nice.
- 5/5
I had a late check in due to a flight delay and the staff were very accommodating. The hotel is also licated in an area with parks, cafes, and restaurants.
- 4/5
Let's be serious here, we are reviewing an independently run motel and not the Ritz. Viking Motel is a fine stay if you are on business travel or need a short overnight stay. It is not a vacation property. The staff are great. The room adequate and very very clean. The location can be dicey in parts but this is Portland - Keep it Weird. Local food options amazing. A few upgrades would be nice like modern air conditioners and showers - not tub shower version. All in all I'd stay again.
- 3/5
We stayed here based on price but for 30 bucks more we could have had a much nicer hotel with more amenities. The property looked nicer in the photos than it actually was. Furniture and fixtures looked old and some of it broken. The room had a musty smell and was next to a busy street. There are some good eateries nearby and we walked to Peninsula Park which had a nice playground and rose garden but noticed many homes had bars on the windows. Wouldn't stay here again.
- 4/5
Very walkable location. Limited parking on site but free. Quiet and clean. Good price for the location. Semi renovated room. Everything else was still in good condition.
- 4/5
Good value, no frills but well maintained.

Staff is very rude
- 4/5
Great place to stay quiet rooms were okay kinda small but great staff quick check in and great spot to stay if you want something quick, cheap, and relaxing.
- 4/5
I’d stay there again. Not enough parking space available in lot & had to park a couple blocks away one night which wasn’t ideal. Never ran into a lack of parking space issue before
- 4/5
Our room was modest but very clean and well-kept up for an older building. Not very noisy. Limited access to staff but they were friendly. Parking available but not guaranteed. The area felt a bit seedy and you have to ring a buzzer to get into the locked lobby area. Overall pleased and will stay here again.
- 5/5
This is my second visit and I would gladly stay again!
- 4/5
Portland's light rail, Max, is just outside the door so easy to get to and from the airport or to downtown. Quiet space
- 5/5
This hotel is great for its low price. It's not fancy, but the owners are friendly and extremely helpful. It is quiet in the hotel, but since it's on a busy street, you do hear traffic noise.
- 1/5
I bought booking protection. When I tried to cancel my reservation, I inadvertently cancelled my protection. I am 70, I can walk pretty far, but should I have to?
- 5/5
Great location, clean rooms, no hassle.
- 5/5
Great family motel, full kitchen and super comfy beds. Late check out is 11:30 am so keep that in mind! But we enjoyed our stay and will go again!
- 4/5
Clean and comfortable.
- 4/5
We liked the location. It was very clean. The bed was very comfortable. On if the towel racks and the hook in the bathroom door was missing. We told the management. They said a prior occupant did that and maintenance would fix it in 2 days.
- 5/5
We had a great stay ! Very clean fun night. Awesome sign!
- 4/5
Easy to get to your room. Perfect for a quick stop.
- 4/5
Viking is awesome! Nearby train stop for easy access downtown. Staff is so nice and felt very safe. Only issue I had was pillows were extremely flat and not very comfortable. Also tv didn't seem to be working, but we managed without it. Would definitely stay here again for a good affordable place in Portland.

I love this motel. It’s perfect.

- 5/5
Cleanest motel I’ve ever been at! It was spotless, and they even included disposable bath mats, a great addition for young kids!
- 5/5
The room was basic, quite clean and included a comfortable chair. Parking was convenient and free. It is a short walk down to a Fred Meyer store (which includes a Starbucks) and there were a few bars and restaurants within a few blocks, a few of which we had the opportunity to try out. Nothing fancy, but the Viking Motel is an outstanding value in a convenient location. We will definitely stay here next time we visit Portland.
- 4/5
very accommodating to my delayed arrival
- 5/5
It is an older property, but that I know of not part of some huge chain. Other than it being slightly dated, it was a very clean, quiet, comfortable room and bed. Staff was great in explaining how things work.
- 4/5
The motel is old so it's not surprising that some wear and tear shows up-- chips on the bathroom door paint, for example-- but the room and bathroom were clean and functional and the bed comfortable. The place was quiet too, and the location is good for us. We stayed two nights and expect to stay another two soon.

The property is clean and the owners are friendly. The location is very convenient.

We didn’t have high expectations. But for an old cheap motel we loved it. We appreciated that there was a microwave, fridge, and hair dryer. The parking was simple. The whole place was quiet. We’d stay again.
- 5/5
We live locally, my girlfriend and I were just doing a little staycation to get a break from the kids, etc. This place was perfect for a little respite from the madness of real life. We'll probably stay here again at some point, because why not? If I had any constructive criticism for this place, it would be sort out the temperature on the mini fridge because we definitely froze some stuff that we didn't want to. And I think if you're going to advertise a shower/tub combo, it would be cool if you made sure to have stoppers for the tubs in case people wanted to actually enjoy a bath. But, overall, the stay was great and this is me trying to be nitpicky for the sake of the most honest review I can make.
- 4/5
This place was good. We did have a problem with the heater not working. It wouldn’t go into heat mode. It would only stay in cool mode, which is normally fine, but not when it’s cold outside. Nobody is at the front desk after 10. While they said we could ring them, it was very late and felt uncomfortable doing so.
- 3/5
Hotel photos looked nothing like the real thing. Staff was friendly, but definitely a little scary when the office keeps the door locked at all times. Wasn’t quite sure I felt safe around the area. Room was clean but definitely very old and outdated. It’s more like the kind of hotel you live in than visit.

The gentle working the desk was the hotel manager and he was very friendly and accommodating. He noticed that my brother was in need of a room down stairs due to physical challenges with his knees. We are always grateful for great hospitality
