Reviews
The Sentinel Hotel offers a mix of historic charm and modern amenities, with attentive staff and a prime location in downtown Portland. However, some guests have expressed concerns about cleanliness, noise, and outdated facilities in certain rooms.
- Attentive staff and excellent customer service

Location, staff and quality of accommodation

Wonderful checkin and stay up until the last day. Ordered breakfast via room service and it never came and no notification was given that it wasn't coming.
- 5/5
Every time I stay, I am embraced by the most professional team. Highly recommend.
- 4.5/5
The room was beautiful. The terrace overlooking downtown was especially. The A/C was very inconsistent. Never did get it to cool properly. And the large round table in the corner was both ugly and a waste of space. The space would be better served with a nice desk and chair looking out of the window.
- 5/5
The hotel was classic & the room was cozy & comfortable, & beautiful! Would definitely stay again.
- 4.5/5
Beautiful building. Nice lobby, spacious room, access to Shinola bikes, wine hour, nice staff Not informed of construction outside our room, although apologized and compensated generously.
- 5/5
The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful. The price of parking was extremely high for one night. I would recommend not taking a car.
- 5/5
Lived the coffee and wine!

I enjoyed our stay. Loved the room. The fireplace was a nice touch. My only complaint if I can really call it that, is the resort fee. What “amenities” warrant an extra charge? According to the website, a comfy bed, a virtual concierge and a spiritual library. I mean I guess I could have asked for a Bagavad Gita to be brought to my room at midnight but in my mind, resort fees mean there is a sauna or hot tub. Maybe a game room? Just charge $35 more and cut it with the disingenuous fee. Lovely hotel though and would stay there again.

Clean room, staff was excellent, as was the bar! We don’t stay anywhere else in Portland.

We were very pleased!

Staff need to go to a training class for manners and customer service!

Everything except the WIFI. People were great, friendly, attentive, overall a great experienced. Internet

Room was spacious, staff were pleasant, bed was extremely comfortable, and they even had complementary umbrellas, which was nice because it rained almost every day. I would stay here again.

The moment we walked in we were greeted in a pleasant and professional manner. The entire staff was kind and helpful. The room was large and beautifully decorated. We had a dinner and breakfast at Jake’s and both were delicious. Nick in the bar made me the best mocktail I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this hotel.

We booked this last minute- five minutes before we checked in. We had an issue with another hotel that oversold and had no rooms at our check-in
- 5/5
The staff was exceptional. Parking was expensive.
- 4/5
Its location + staff are great restaurant is very good ! I didn’t particularly like the interior felt not as impressive as it should be . They have a lot of the old stressed furniture look . Dirt in the window sills in the room . Beds were comfortable . Not much of a bar no rooftop patio only for private suites .
- 5/5
A very nice hotel with fabulous lobby and lots of features, including various historical photos on each level. Good location for everything cultural. Excellent bar. Only real drawbacks was the municipal works overnight outside the hotel which woke us at around 4-5 am a couple of nights
- 5/5
We had drinks and apps at Jake's during happy hour and everything was wonderful.
- 5/5
pet friendly, staff were friendly and helpful, hotel was centralized and convenient.
- 5/5
Well appointed. Pet friendly. We took our tiny travel princess and the staff had our room all ready for her with bed, toys, bowls.
- 5/5
Beautiful building and room. Comfortable beds, staff was great! Always enjoy staying there.
- 5/5
Due to time constraints, we were only able to stay one night there, but we absolutely loved it, and hope to return one day. So classy, so beautiful, so—authentic. From the ornate ceilings to the fireplace in our room, we felt like we’d traveled back to the early years of the last century. Thank you, Sentinel Hotel, and everyone who keeps this place so clean, so perfect, and running so smoothly. Our short stay is a memory I will carry with me always. NOTE: We did not eat there, or use the bar. Unfortunately, we had very little time.

Paid $30 extra for the “amenities “ but only used the WiFi for a couple of hours. And nothing on the description warned us about the noise from the street car/train. Otherwise AOK

Cute hotel, but bathroom was quite dirty so that was disappointing.

I am not sure if they offered breakfast we were only there one night and left early in the morning

Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Great location for public transportation or walking. Balcony was relaxing and gorgeous. Jakes Grill had a pretty solid Eggs Benedict and great beer selection. The bed we had was very firm and hard to sleep on. Alot of back pain by morning. With a 5 star hotel i would expect better quality beds, especially at a $300 a night price point. I had $100 stays on my trip with better beds.

Wonderful amenities, comfortable room and pet friendly. Walking distance to everything else you need. One of the best stays we’ve had in Portland!

Large comfortable rooms in a great location with easy access to shopping and great eats.

Beautifully restored classic hotel. Large room, comfy bed, friendly staff, great location! The shower water pressure was dismal, but instant hot water. The Roman blind in the bathroom was broken

beautiful hotel! Great jazz on Wednesday evenings at 8 pm.
- 5/5
Staff interactions were all great. Restaurant and bar was wonderful. Valet was very fast. Not there long enough to try much out
- 5/5
the hotel was exactly what I was looking for : solid, antique but well modernised. The rooms were comfortable, with touches of what felt luxurious, good bedding and thick drapes. The rest of the hotel had charm and depth
- 5/5
Perfect location. Had a corner room with a great view.
- 5/5
Room was beautiful, quiet and the staff always wonderful!
- 5/5
We had a lovely stay at the Sentinel. Conveniently located, spacious room. Very comfortable beds! Meredith at the front desk is lovely. Very helpful and friendly. The gym had a peleton, free weights and some cardio machines. I would definitely stay again.

Also the staff was extremely accommodating, professional and kind.
- 4/5
I was there for an event at Jake’s Grill… The food was underwhelming. The next morning I ordered room service and I was brought a different order than what I had ordered. So the hotel is amazing, but the restaurant is not.
- 4/5
The hotel itself has a really nice atmosphere the staff at check-in and check-out were friendly and welcoming. Dylan at the front desk was especially helpful. We did experience an inconvenience on our first night: a full emergency building evacuation. We got up, got ready, and evacuated as instructed, but it ended up being nothing, which definitely disrupted our night since we were already getting ready for bed. I mentioned it at checkout, and Dylan let me know he would take care of the resort fee for that night. I’ll be checking the final billing statement to make sure it reflects that adjustment. Another thing to note is the parking situation. The hotel doesn’t have its own parking, which I wish I had known ahead of time. Luckily, we found a nearby lot for $24 a night much better than paying $65 for valet. There were also a few external holiday parties happening at the hotel during our stay, so the elevators were a little congested at times, but it didn’t negatively affect our experience. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Sentinel. The hotel is beautiful, the staff is kind, and the vibe is great.

The hotel, the room, the food, the ambiance.
- 5/5
Wonderful stay!

Great stay
- 5/5
Great staff and nice room
- 5/5
Staff great and accommodations fantastic
- 4/5
I love this unique, gorgeous hotel with its stunning architecture and interesting art. The beds- COMFORTABLE. Location is excellent to walk to the Crystal Ballroom, Powell’s Books, and some great food options. One incredibly small change would have a good impact on impression- for goodness sake, offer something besides non-dairy creamer for the room’s coffee and for the complementary morning lobby coffee.
- 5/5
Wonderful wine hour, gym was great, cozy room, the hotel itself is beautiful and close to everything!
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel. Staff was nice. No breakfast bar to speaf of, just coffee.
- 5/5
Cool old hotel , was here for a conference , wry cute room with fire place , also very spacious
- 5/5
I had a wonderful stay here. I loved the history of the hotel with the beautiful modern decor.
- 3/5
No breakfast, office space, parking, pool. Some front desk staff were snooty and confrontational. It was not communicated to me how the valet works to keep the ticket for the entire stay abd when I ask they seemed super annoyed. The hotel is an old building and had to pay for water in the room. Room was already expensive and they didn’t even offer basics of breakfast or water. I guess they serve wine but that is exclusive for someone living sober. Valets were and housekeeping were amazing!
- 5/5
Beautiful place. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Helpful, accommodating staff, nice ambiance, quiet, well appointed, clean, comfortable rooms
- 5/5
The Hotel is immaculate and beautiful! The workout room A+, choice of restaurants impeccable and staff is so friendly and professional!
- 5/5
The private roof top terrace with fire pit was worth it!
- 3/5
Paid to stay in a suite that wasnt all that sweet.
- 5/5
Loved the terrace room with the fireplace. It was large and comfortable with cozy decor. Really great hotel with boutique character.
- 5/5
We loved the hotel and restaurant, Jake’s, and had a very nice dinner there.
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Nice views.
- 5/5
Executive lounge was awesome!!
- 4/5
This is supposed to be the most elegant hotel in the area. We got the most basic room: tiny, dark with a few of a closed off air shaft! It was pretty creepy. Granted we got a good price but I would have paid more for a view and some air and light. And it was made worse by getting texts from the hotel sending superlatives about how our visit must be the most charming and delightful time we've ever experienced in their hotel. When I finally said, well, no, it wasn't...they did finally give us free breakfasts, which were good. But, it was a strange experience.
- 5/5
We needed valet before 7am and it was no problem getting our car. Staff at check-in and check-out was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed.
- 4/5
We stayed in Sentinel for one night. It is in a convenient location in downtown, but the noise from street cars is loud late at night. The hotel is historic and has 2 buildings. We stayed in the Executive King room so we do not know how big other rooms are, but our room was average size and the bathroom was very small. There was only a pedestal sink. There is no room to put anything there except toothbrushes and paste. It has a tub with a shower over tub too short for tall people. The hotel is eco-friendly in the sense of shampoo, lotion, conditioner dispensers, but for a luxury hotel the absence of some items in the bathroom is strange. They put one black color wash cloth for make up removal, which is fine, but no make up removal tissues or anything except a soap bar. The room was very clean, but showed age. There were 2 armchairs with worn out and damaged leather. It was not for a style because 2 identical armchairs, not damaged were in the hallway. They have nice amenities. Coffee, tea, fruit in the morning and free wine tasting in the evening, but the condition of elevators, some doors, windows need to be improved. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Their restaurant Jake's Grill is the place to go.
- 5/5
Loved the room at the end of the hall. Very convenient location with nice rooms.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, large rooms, lots of closet space, and a vegan restaurant in the hotel.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel elegantly restored right in the heart of Portland. Beautiful murals, ceilings make it a visual feast. Jake’s Grill for breakfast can’t be beat
- 5/5
They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was extraordinarily
- 5/5
Great hotel. Friendly staff. Convenient location. Can't beat the price for the quality received. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The staff is fantastic, bar and restaurants are classic gems, rooms are wonderful and classy, with all the touches of a boutique hotel experience compared to the soulless corporate brands. Love it!
- 5/5
Great stay right down town. Walkable to many exceptional dining and shopping options. Overall truly nice place, accommodating staff, and very comfortable.
- 5/5
Great historical place with updated feel but old world charm. Get the top floor with a balcony/patio if you can. So worth it!
- 5/5
Excellent hospitality. Better hotel in my opinion than the Marriott, Porter, Vance, Embassy Suites in the downtown area. Slight edge over the Dossier too
- 5/5
We were very impressed with the hotel in every aspect. Very unique layout and rooms. Front desk staff were always friendly especially Melanie, who ensured that everything was perfect for us. We will be back.
- 2/5
Crucially the AC in the room was really really noisy. It couldn’t be turned down so was either on full or off and it was too hot for off. Made sleeping, partic with jet lag really hard and we needed to use earplugs. Bed was really comfortable though. $7 for a bottle of water in the room is ridiculous although there was filtered water in an adjacent room with complimentary snacks Staff were OK. Not particularly friendly at all. Cursory conversations on check in and check out only. Officious barman on the last night out us off having a nightcap as he said there was no room for us to sit. All in all staff didn’t make a great impression, sorry Portland’s downtown has really suffered so the immediate area is not great. Whilst not dangerous it is quite depressing. We stayed at the Governor 30 years ago - have to say this was a disappointing experience
- 5/5
Beautiful historic hotel
- 4/5
Also, the dial on the bathroom wall is for the jetted tub. Not an obvious kinda deal.
- 5/5
The location is wonderful, the rooms are special, the staff is warm, and the restaurants are excellent!
- 5/5
The hotel is absolutely gorgeous!
- 5/5
Well-preserved/maintained 1920’s building with excellent guest service at check in
- 5/5
Great hotel and location
- 5/5
Beautiful older property, good closet space. Only negative are the toilets are very low unless in a handicapped room if you have issue squatting
- 5/5
Older, gently worn but cozy, comfortable and interesting. Nice staff, good location.

4 stars for a 4 star hotel

Spent the night of our wedding there, they gave us a complimentary upgrade and we had an amazing time. Would not have changed anything about it!
- 5/5
Beautiful historic building, restored and updated. Stylish lobby, happening bar scene (but unheard on room floors). Large stylish rooms. Easy walk to all downtown PDX atteactions.
- 5/5
We really enjoyed the Sentinel Hotel. Beautiful building. Very friendly & helpful staff, Shout out to Kevin the valet & the front desk staff. Restaurant is excellent as were all the restaurants in Portland. Would highly recommend.
- 4/5
Great location; nice historic hotel
- 5/5
We had a great time. Even with the parade, they went over the top to accommodate the situation to get us our car and complete our stay so it was great.
- 5/5
Great stay! Noisy bar next door at night but co dot hear it I. The room call so didn’t bother me!
- 5/5
Excellent downtown Portland hotel with great service.
- 3/5
Over all it was a nice stay. The bathroom in our room needs a big upgrade. Toilet way to low to the ground, shower was like an
- 5/5
Outstanding customer service all around. Loved our stay here!
- 5/5
Check in was quick and the staff was very friendly. (Valet also really nice staff and very friendly). They offered ice water and apples in the lobby, and a wine HH from 5-6pm, we grabbed a glass after dinner, and it was great. Dining Tip: Jake’s Grill is connected to the hotel and they have really good HH dining options- the chicken tacos are awesome and the cheeseburger is normal not HH sized. Although the hotel had a group of two that weekend we did not feel rushed, ignored or not as important. Great walkable hotel near powells bookstore and other great shopping. We would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Good spot to walk around downtown
- 5/5
Good downtown location - 4 star hotel at price of 3 -
- 5/5
I loved the location, friendly staff and the detail of the restoration to a historic property. Very accommodating and an enjoyable stop in the heart of Portland.
- 3/5
This is a historic hotel in downtown Portland; however, that doesn't mean the chairs should have peeling upholstery or that parts of the furniture should be covered in dust.
- 5/5
This was a very nice old style hotel, very charming. The room was fantastic. The hotel restaurant was pretty good food, a little pricey but to be expected in a hotel like this in the downtown area. Our server was nice, but a bit slow in service, for instance, our drinks went empty a couple of times, we were done with our food for a while before they came to ask for dessert or if we wanted our check. Other servers seemed more attentive, so might have just been a bad night.
- 5/5
Lovely hotel with welcoming staff and nice perks.
- 5/5
Nice and beautifully decorated
- 5/5
Our favorite hotel in all of Portland!
- 1/5
The employee who was working the shift has poor knowledge regarding the hotel / rooms. Was friendly on the other Hand. But over all I feel very, very disappointed. In all honesty I personally feel very sad / upset with my stay. Once I got to my room that's I was very excited for, I had went straight to the bathroom to try out the jacuzzi bathtub. To only find out as it was filling up, it was very dirty. I was able to see gross hair and floating things in the tub. Then I proceeded to let it fill up, walked to the jet timer by the sink to only find out I was given a not working bathtub. Then I used the fire place, turned it on and had left to go down the hallway to check out the snack area and once I came back, the room smelled like a sort of gas. It was a very overwhelming smell. So I just ended up shutting it off for the night. I proceed to go to the bed and I lifted the sheets because I personally do that at any place I'm staying at. And there was these nasty huge yellow stains all over the bottom sheet. I ended up sleeping on the pull out sofa bed. I am still very upset about my stay that I paid $400 dollars for, for one night and thats what I was given. It was late so I didn't have the energy to tell the front counter and I was so discouraged and unhappy that I just didn't mention anything to the employees over all. Felt like there wasn't anything I could do. And that's most likely not the right decision I made but I'm just at a lost for words. I definitely don't recommend
- 5/5
Great service
- 5/5
Location great, service super helpful, room clean and comfy, only thing not so great was the weather but that is portland in February. Will return for sure!
- 5/5
My wife and I rode the elevator up and when we stepped off , it was so much more beautiful than we had thought ! The art was beautiful and thoughtful and the decor was vintage but not too much , very classy and rich and the way the lights shined through the skylights lighting up all the live indoor plants lining the hallway of the apartment style rooms . We opened our door to our room and were immediately taken a back , at how the aesthetic was perfect for us .
- 5/5
Beautiful building, stylish and clean. The bed was comfy and the balcony overlooking the city was great! We will definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Surprising oasis of calm. I would definitely go back.
- 5/5
This place is incredible. Beautiful, quiet, and kind staff.
- 3/5
Nice vintage hotel. Best for those who appreciate vintage.
- 5/5
I have stayed at the Sentinel since it was the Govener 5 or 6 times. Classic old hotel with beautiful wood work, but not at all worn out. Room was very up to date, though wifi poor. Enough outlets, bathroom very nice. Chose a premium room w fireplace. With 2 easy chairs and table a pleasant place to do some work. Tram is noisy, but i like it (as have lived by them in past). Jakes was fabulous for dinner. Much better then lat time. Staff helpful. Great location. Close to everything. Nearby public parking. No reason to stay abywhere else
- 5/5
Excelent
- 5/5
I would absolutely stay again.
- 4/5
Staff is so helpful here, top notch service in every way. Fun property, great area to walk around, close to shopping and so much yummy food. Loved it!
- 5/5
Lovely gem with delightful staff. First stay there and we will be back.
- 4/5
A very nice stay
- 5/5
Front desk people were great. Room was clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
This Prperty was beautiful, quiet and a good location for being downtown. The staff was amazing!! I will definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The Sentinel Hotel is a grand hotel with its traditional elegant furnishings, decor, crown moldings and staircases. It features one of Portlands most iconic restaurant , worth your time to dine. Surprisingly I also featured the hot spot of the city bar with dancing. The oversized rooms, ours with fireplace and the most comfortable bed was well appointed. The location of the hotel was superb. The price was surprisingly good as we have paid a lot more for a lot less. Will bookmark The Sentinel Hotel for a return visit. Portland itself is worth the trip filled with incredible independent stores and shops, incredible dining options and safe.
- 5/5
Enjoyed comfortable accommodations, enjoyable environment and style to the shared and private spaces, as well, wonderful on-site restaurant and bar accommodations. The whole family enjoyed - ages 7-80 years old.
- 3/5
We don’t realize that the train line ran so close by the hotel that we were woken up every night. I think the windows should be made sound proof.
- 5/5
Stayed for a Holiday Party. Great service. Jakes restaurant is also great.
- 4/5
older hotel that shows it's age.
- 5/5
We’ve stayed here in the past. Nice property, excellent venue for a party.
- 3/5
Great staff that are very helpful and are willing to answer all your questions! No matter how small the request is. One thing to note was my bathroom was dirty and the elevator was down so they couldn’t clean it. Besides that, it was a beautiful hotel!
- 5/5
Lovely
- 5/5
Great experience. Beautiful old hotel centrally located.
- 5/5
Excellent weekend getaway spot
- 4/5
Great property for a great price! The valet was amazing with helping us navigate the city. It’s super close to the Pearl district and all the downtown shopping and dining. The restaurant and bar were great and staff very friendly. We had a room that faced a sort of inner courtyard which I wish they would have told us at check in but otherwise, I really enjoyed the hotel and will stay again.
- 3/5
The food in both restaurants was mediocre. They truly need to improve what they serve as well as the quality. If they can raise this quality the hotel would be a great place to stay.
- 5/5
We like the location, next to our son's apt. The atmosphere was very cool and charming. Old school elegant charm. Restaurant was part of the property. What we didn't like was too much street noise. The hotel provided ear plugs which solved the problem. Next time we will get a room higher off the street or interior room.
- 5/5
Very nice! Staff was great and rooms were lovely.
- 5/5
This hotel was absolutely beautiful and we loved our stay here. The location downtown was great, and we enjoyed walking in the area around the hotel. I would definitely stay here again!
- 4/5
Great affordable hotel! You get a lot for your money. This is our second time staying at the Sentinel and will stay again. Hotel is very centrally located to all the best parts of Portland, Pioneer square, Pearl district, and PSU. Beds were very comfortable with high quality linens. Bathroom amenities were also very nice quality and smelled amazing. The art around the property is very fun and eclectic, we kept noticing new things. Especially loved the signed guitar (you will have to stay to see who signed it.) The restaurant had a good selection for anyone. The custom cocktails in the bar were amazing. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Portland, business or leisure.
- 5/5
Great, easy stay in downtown Portland. Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. Small gym but enough to get a solid workout in.
- 5/5
Historic hotel nicely renovated
- 5/5
loved the room but didn’t like the fact that the patio was not exclusively closed off from your neighbor next to you on both sides.
- 5/5
We had a wonderful weekend stay. Our room was super cute & clean. We loved being on the top floor because of the shuttered skylights. The only slight annoyance was a small hum in the room at night that would come & go. There was also a lot of road noise/traffic. I’d recommend bringing ear plugs. But those minor inconveniences didn’t impact our overall enjoyment of our stay.

- 5/5
A beautiful hotel, lovely room that smells great. Attentive and helpful staff. The full service restaurant offered a broad and generous happy hour menu.
- 3/5
Well, our room was not ready at the time of check-in. But the staff was very polite about it. We waited 45 minutes for our room to be ready. We reserved an Executive room, but it was quite average. The TV was quite small, the bathroom had a bit of urine smell, the sink had deposits around the faucet and did not look clean. They also kept the drinking glasses right above the toilet. The worst part was the shampoo. Even with conditioning twice, it stripped my hair to the point that my hair felt like straw and some of it broke off onto the pillow. I was shocked. We also ordered room service. The eggs benedict was not good because the eggs were poached hard. I didnt have a chance to tell the front desk any of this during check-out because he was the only person tending the front desk, and was busy being on-hold on the phone. He whispered that he'd email the receipt. I still have not received the receipt by email. Our stay was average at best, but having my hair ruined was the worst. I now have to spend hundreds to repair it. If you stay here, bring your own shampoo, conditioner, beard oil. My husband beard was so rough after his shower, too. We will unlikey stay here again. There are plenty of wonderful hotels in the area that we've stayed in multiple times a year.
- 5/5
Very nice ambiance. Corner room is very spacious. Jake’s Grill restaurant was very good. Ideal location to walk around to check out sites. Great customer service at front desk.
- 5/5
Wonderful old hotel with excellent service. Great restaurants nearby. The only negative is the high number of homeless people walking around
- 5/5
Beautiful place cool inside lots of carved wood grand staircases clean big rooms
- 4/5
The room i was in was very clean, the bed was really comfortable. The thing i didnt like is that room service stops at 11am so i used uber a lot. It was easy to get around, plenty of places to eat at. I would definitely stay again, you wont be disappointed staying here.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel and staff members are very nice!
- 4/5
Former elks Lodge, very unique and ornate. Would definitely recommend it to friends or family. Was a little disappointed that the original suite I books had an issue and we were not able to be in that room. But the staff was apologetic and gave us a bottle of champagne for the inconvenience.

Was advised it was not safe to park on the street. Restaurant in the hotel very nice. Jazz Wed evening and welcome hour from 5 to 6 at the winebar

Absolutely lovely! The room was pristine and the staff was so helpful. Bar and nightclub on premises was tops!

There was no shower curtain in our bathroom and there was some dust and grime buildup in the bathroom. Otherwise, it was a fine stay in a sophisticated and elegantly styled hotel.

Room was very comfortable, quiet and clean. Providence Park, as well as retail shops and restaurants were in walking distance. (Packing a flashlight for walking at night is helpful since many sidewalks are dark.) Hotel service was excellent!! Would stay there again!

It was ok, pretty outdated hotel, feels like your in the 80’s, no in room service only got breakfast.
