Guests frequently mention the complimentary wine happy hour and the fitness center. However, some guests have expressed concerns about the homeless population in the area and the tight underground parking.

The Mark Spencer is a fantastic centrally located downtown hotel that will not disappoint. The staff are super helpful and the hotel is very clean and well-maintained. The coffee is great and the rooms are very spacious! I highly recommend this hotel!
- 5/5
Helpful staff, comfortable rooms and a great location
- 4/5
Great location, good value, room large and comfy. Wine tasting was nice. Carpets could be replaced. Parked across the street, no problems.
- 2/5
Habitación terribles ! El lavamanos no baja el agua , el toilet no funcionaba correctamente , todos los muebles sucios , un olor desagradable en la habitación !
- 5/5
Very nice hotel, I would stay here anytime im in the area based on my stay.
- 5/5
Convenient location, spacious room, comfortable beds, nice shower. I only wish there had been a restaurant for breakfast on property. Definitely would stay again
- 5/5
Incredibly helpful staff at the Mark Spencer. Location is great: a block away from Powell’s Books and several good restaurants. Parking was right across the street.
- 5/5
The staff were friendly and its a great value! The room was beautiful with great amentities. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, if it had a valet it would have been perfection.

- 5/5
Friendly and attentive staff. Loved our room. It was so lean and well maintained. Looking forward to staying again!
- 4/5
Rooms were nice and updated. The kitchenette was a plus. Comfortable beds. They missed servicing our room despite them offering and said it would be taken care of. Parking garage tight and a bit scary.
- 5/5
Clean room and friendly staff! Favorite place to stay in Downtown!
- 5/5
The location was perfect, and the room was so comfortable! They even gave us a free little portable doggy water bowl for our dog when we checked in. We used it a lot on the rest of our roadtrip!!
- 3.5/5
Heater in room 215, inoperable. Space heater was loud and needed to be placed in an inconvenient location.
- 4/5
Very good

Nice sized, well-appointed rooms. Very helpful staff.
- 3/5
Walls thin. Cafe shut down. Elevators old and slow. WiFi slow. One block away were addicts and homeless people. Little premium cable. No pool or jacuzzi
- 5/5
Best price for parking in downtown under $40/day (open lot across the street and underground parking beneath hotel). Very helpful staff. Hotel is close to major sights of Portland, great restaurants, and public transportation stops within steps of the hotel.
- 5/5
Amazing area around the hotel, beds very comfortable and staff treated us amazing. Will be back
- 5/5
The front desk guy (I hate that I didn’t get his name) was amazing! So nice, so friendly, good communication about parking, and was really quick when I told him I was in a rush to check in and get to a concert. Room was clean and the bed was extremely comfortable!!!
- 3.5/5
Location, walking distance to everything in Downtown Portland Elevators, Reception area and oder - old building
- 4/5
Self parking was available on-site in a basement garage. Very tight parking even for smaller vehicles. Being tired from a day of driving, I managed to scratch the side of my vehicle on one of the support columns. Apparently, on-street parking is available, but I would probably be uncomfortable with that, also.
- 3/5
Stinky rooms and no check in till 4 pm sharp.
- 3/5
The hotel is older and on the smaller side, but well maintained. The one area that could use more attention is the edges of the walls and glass doors in the bathroom, which needed a more thorough cleaning. One unexpected surprise: there is no in-room coffee unless you request it. Worth knowing before you arrive. Our reservation was for two adults and a 15-year-old child, and all three of us checked in together. The sofa bed bedding was not in the room, and when we called the front desk, we were told we should have requested it at check-in. Our child is 15 and taller than both parents, so it should have been clear that three people cannot share a king bed. Having the sofa bed bedding already in the room, or simply asking at check-in, would go a long way in making guests feel well taken care of. It does not hurt to ask.
- 5/5
When checking in I talked with a girl at the front desk that was absolutely the sweetest, I wish I grabbed her name! Overall a great stay and would love to stay again!
- 2.5/5
The front staff was so helpful and were ready to help in anyway possible, but the hotel and the room itself was not great. First it was kinda dirty we found a dead roach under the bed, the shower flooded the whole bathroom and it didn’t get fixed they just gave us another room to shower in which was nice but the shower wasn’t nearly as nice as the one that was in the room I booked for. The phone in the room was dead and also didn’t get fixed. The area the hotel is in is reaalllyyyy bad don’t go walking at night lol Really bad area of town, dirty room, shower was messed up and flooded the bathroom

Large room, happy hour, good coffee downstairs, friendly helpful staff, location - Powell's book store, 2 good restaurants we tried right on our block, other Pearl District attractions. Coffee in room, little cafe or at least breakfast in the hotel, expensive parking
- 5/5
Everything was great. Staff was awesome room was clean. The only issue I had was the AC in my room was did not work properly or was too old but no complaints other than that.

To be welcomed as we were at check in was so uplifting. We were also given a customized list of great nearby vegetarian restaurants. The staff managing customer
- 5/5
Very friendly and helpful staff and onsite parking garage at a reasonable fee. The room was quiet!
- 5/5
I enjoyed the available coffee and tea as well as the room with a kitchen. The staff were also incredibly friendly.
- 5/5
Very good bottle of wine per stay provided plus wine tasting every day from 5-6 pm at the beautiful lobby area. Wonderful staff, easy accessible paid parking. However, it is very unfortunate the area around the hotel didn't feel too safe. But the hotel was perfect.
- 5/5
Property is in perfect location for downtown Portland area. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Have stayed here several times and will continue to use when in Portland

Nice hotel! Within walking distance of so many great places.
- 5/5
Great staff, loved the free bottle of wine on check-in for being an Expedia member! Free wine reception in the lobby. Will stay again!
- 5/5
Central walkable location with an excellent room at a reasonable price. Hard to beat.
- 5/5
Great stay in downtown Portland!!
- 5/5
Harrison was awesome and very friendly throughout our stay. I’ve stayed in more than fifteen hotels in the Portland area, and this is one I find myself coming back to regularly.
- 5/5
Cool location close to the train and walking distance of two good neighborhoods
- 4/5
Very friendly staff. The hotel is older, but still well maintained. Close to food and drink spots.
- 5/5
Smooth check in, close parking, excellent block of restaurants!
- 5/5
We've stayed at the Mark Spencer Hotel many times and love the comfortable rooms and location in downtown.
- 4/5
No daily housekeeping, heating not working well.
- 5/5
Had a great experience with the Mark Spencer hotel. From check in to check out everything went so smooth. They allowed me to check in early. Helped me with my luggage. Staff was super friendly. Room was very clean and plenty comfortable. The gym room could use a little help but that’s not a huge deal. Would definitely recommend staying here.
- 5/5
Booked this hotel last minute as a girls overnight trip for my daughter who was turning 16. When the front desk staff found out it was her birthday they upgraded our room to one with a better view and gave her cookies and chocolate. The front desk staff were very sweet and personable. The room was great, clean, and I had no complaints. We spent a lot of the evening at Powells book store which is a quick walk and got burgers for dinner at mcmenamins. Nice location with plenty to walk to. Would stay again!
- 5/5
We've stayed at the Mark Spencer Hotel several times. We've enjoyed it, even though its an older building. I think the only thing I dislike is the small parking garage.
- 3/5
Not expecting perfection, but another set of eyes should be sent to make sure the job is being done correctly.
- 5/5
The location allows you to walk to the water front, the weather machine, we were able to take in the Saturday market. I highly recommend this. The staff are awesome. The wine and music on Fridays and Saturdays was excellent.
- 5/5
I slept well here and the staff was very helpful! I loved the complimentary bottle of wine and coffee! In the evenings there was a nice wine and cheese hour from 5-6. This is a nice location for Amtrak traveling and also it’s an easy walk to downtown transit! It’s a happening neighborhood! The staff really went all out to help make my stay amazing!
- 3/5
A smell of age, and not in a good way, permeates the property. Inside the room, things are dirty and worn down. The chair was covered with a myriad of stains and some kind of physical substance (perhaps food?). The bathroom grout, floor boards, and fixtures all needed attention. And, unfortunately, the smell permeated everything. We made it through the night as we were moving on in our vacation the next day, but it’s not a place I would recommend even for a night, sadly. There is so much potential with a great building and staff; it just really needs some significant maintenance and an ongoing plan for thorough cleaning.
- 5/5
The room was great and we enjoyed happy hour. The location is great for shopping, dining and local events.
- 4/5
Excellent location near Powell’s. Good restaurants nearby. Great way to spend a couple of days in Portland.
- 4/5
The Mark Spencer Hotel has a friendly staff. There is a 5pm complimentary Wine hour and on Saturdays there is a 1 man band Jim ? He was unique and very gifted a joy to be entertained by. The room we stayed in had a kitchenette and a king size bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom was very well laid out and upscale with a excellent rainshower no lack of water pressure. The hotel is just around the block from the Ritz Carlton and there are a lot of choices to eat and have a drink. Unfortunately Portland has a homeless and drug community that lives on the streets near by. But you can not escape them since they are all over the city. We invariably give small donations to some of them since it is a sad sad sight to see the suffering. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel with easy access to great restaurants and a secure parking garage.
- 5/5
No on site restaurant or bar. Staff was amazing!!! Hated having to park my own car in their garage. Lol
- 4/5
Did not have breakfast available.
- 5/5
Very cute hotel and close to everything!
- 5/5
Welcoming and comfortable.
- 4/5
The room was great in terms of its size, but it could have been a bit cleaner - the glass topped coffee table had a lot of crumbs trapped between the glass and the metal edge which wasn't the best look.
- 5/5
The room was very clean and very comfortable. Just stayed a night, so did not utilize amenities. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 3/5
The breakfast options were nice to have but would have been better if the advertised fresh fruit had been available. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast sandwich but received it on an English muffin instead of the requested croissant. Not a huge deal but again, indicative of the attention being paid to details. Top notch drip coffee from Peru and a very good espresso helped. From check in to check out the staff uniformly were helpful and courteous. John greeted us out front upon arrival and when he learned that we were running late he most graciously helped us get our bags to our room, as we had to park across the street due to the garage being full. Easy parking which was nice. It saddens me to see what was a home-away-from-home fail to meet the standards we used to appreciate at this handsome old hotel.
- 5/5
Nice room
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff great location.
- 5/5
Bed was super comfortable but glad I brought my own pillow. The staff are super helpful and professional. Would be happy to stay here again.
- 5/5
Clean room, nice staff.
- 5/5
The most Portlandy hotel in Portland!
- 5/5
We had a wonderful time! The room is very clean, staff are wonderful, breakfast good.
- 1/5
The Mark Spencer hotel is the worst hotel in portland. The hotel itself is a boring nightmare with no character. However, it's the staff that makes it a horrific place to stay. When I stayed there for one night they lost $1000 worth of my belonings. I had just fled across country from an abusive relationship and could only bring 2 bags and my dog. They refused to compensate me in any real way, even though I had checked my luggage with them and they were responsible for keeping it. The manager is a night mare man who implied nothing I owned could be worth more that $100. I am 1000 miles from home and don't even have clothes. They also lost mine and my dogs medications, which are not replaceable. If you are staying in Portland, at least go across the street to the Clyde, it's a better hotel, with better staff, than won't try to ruin your livelihood.
- 5/5
We loved the large King suite. The complementary Happy Hour wine was lovely and the coffee was delicious. All staff were very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel was great - walking distance to many shops, restaurants and the river walk. We will definitely be back!
- 4/5
There are a couple of good restaurants within walking distance. The area looks worse than it actually is because a group of volunteer kitchens feed the homeless a couple of blocks from the hotel. I would recommend this hotel as getting so much more for your money. I even received a bottle of Wild Hills Oregon Rose because I booked with expedia.
- 5/5
Staff writer as very hospitable and helpful
- 5/5
Very nice front desk staff and a cool hotel. For the price it's amazing
- 5/5
Absolutely amazing Hotel! Extremely satisfied with our stay. Timmy at the front desk was extremely helpful and kind. We will for sure be staying here again the next time we are in Portland.

This hotel is beautifully maintained, has comfortable beds, and hot water that doesn’t disappoint. I absolutely loved the centrality of its location, being able to travel on-foot to everything downtown with great ease. Plus, the romantic inner-city views would melt the iciest hearts. Love, love, love!
- 5/5
Very clean and staff very attentive to your needs. Would recommend.
- 5/5
Would recommend staying anytime
- 4/5

Friendly staff and love the convenient location

Clean room, kindly staff
- 3/5
Tired, old, and musty, smells like unwashed people. Needs a complete refurbishment. Staff couldn't handle unclogging a sink.
- 5/5
Excellent staff morning, noon and night. Yummy coffee 24/7. Great neighborhood.
- 5/5
Staff was great welcoming us and giving us an upgrade
- 5/5

- 5/5
Great hotel, friendly staff, I'd stay again.
- 5/5
I would love to stay here again. Artful details, great staff, fun old building. Forgive some small old building things, old tile, and enjoy this special historic place with well placed art, wonderful staff and a sweet happy hour. A block from Powells, a direct bus to even more restaurants on the other side of the river, fabulous.
- 5/5
Staff was friendlyyyy. They were all so cool! The hotel is a bit older but they modernized it without taking away its charm. The bed was sooo comfortable & sheets were so soft I was looking for the brand to get them at home! I’ll definitely stay again!
- 5/5

- 5/5
We had an excellent experience at Mark Spencer Hotel with our family of 5. The room kitchen appliances made traveling with 3 boys so much easier. the bathroom was very clean and the room was a non-smoking and fresh. Staff at reception were warm and helpful from checkin. Highly recommend for families as well.
- 5/5
Convince and walking distance to Powell Book and Old Town Pizza. Quiet and comfortable room, and secure on site garage parking!!
- 5/5
Awesome Stay !

Everyone was really nice , they had happy hour or cheese and wine for guest but from 5-6 but they cleaned up before 6 and we were visibly looking for the crackers the gentleman had the plate in his hand lol but other then that all good! Thank you

Mark Spencer is a great hotel in a great location. The staff are friendly and helpful. The coffee in the lobby is excellent.
- 1/5
I wish to express my disappointment regarding the service I received at your hotel, Mark Spencer Downtown Portland, on April 8 during my business trip. The WIFI was nonfunctional, preventing me from connecting my computer or phone, which made it impossible to access the internet for work communications and caused significant inconvenience. Despite your website promoting high-speed, reliable WIFI, it was entirely unavailable during my stay. This was particularly problematic, as I required a stable connection for online meetings and work tasks. I reached out to the staff for assistance but received no viable solutions. When I approached the front desk to discuss my concerns, the staff offered no remedies, further adding to my frustration.
- 5/5
As always the hotel as a whole is a wonderful place to stay.
- 5/5
Perfect and cozy for a quick night out if town
- 5/5
I liked the place, it was a prime location to walk to a lot of the city attractions !.
- 4/5
The hotel is ok. It is very clean, staff very friendly, but just did not feel safe. Lot of homeless grouped with dogs at night. At restaurants and all places we visited, told us it was very safe. Just did not feel comfortable to walk around.
- 4/5
Overall was a good experience. We enjoy our visit. Beds were comfy. Bathroom had a leak but only when you open the sink. The other thing to note is their parking garage is very narrow hard to get in and get out. Apart from that our stay was good.
- 5/5
I thought I had reserved the room with breakfast for two, but the staff said that breakfast is not included in the hotel fee.
- 5/5
We had a great stay! Comfortable and friendly vibe and located close to everything!
- 5/5
Nice coffee
- 4/5
The TV monitor had a broken corner. The beautiful bathroom tiles had mold in grout lines, something totally preventable with good cleaning…
- 5/5
Clean rooms
- 5/5
Very nice place! My room was huge with a big old bed and a kitchenette. The complimentary coffee was delicious and plentiful, and the staff was really helpful. I got an amazing deal, and I'd definitely stay here again.
- 1/5
Staff was good. Everything else terrible
- 5/5
Clean room walkable
- 5/5
Clean room, easy to walk
- 5/5
This is our favorite hotel in Portland. Always a great place. Very good location as well.
- 5/5
Our room was clean and quiet. They staff was super helpful and extremely friendly! Enjoyed our stay and will come back.
- 4/5
We travel frequently in cities with our teenagers and are not bothered by most homeless people. If it had just been one or two people by the hotel we would have been unfazed, however both times we retuned from exploring the area on foot there were groups of 6-8 homeless people blocking the entire sidewalk near the hotel. One of the times we crossed the street to avoid walking through their group, and ended up walking through a group of three individuals doing/selling drugs instead. This is definitely not the hotel’s fault, but I was very glad my husband was with us as I would have felt much more intimidated as just a mom walking with kids.
- 5/5
Everything was nice and great
- 5/5
This is a beautiful property in a great area. The hotel itself is a little dated, but the rooms are nice and big and the staff is wonderful. Convenient location - walking distance to many shops, restaurants and bars. Since it is downtown, the neighborhood is busy and loud, but the noise in the room was not a problem at all. The daily wine hour was a nice bonus!
- 5/5
This hotel is in a prime location and the staff is excellent and the hotel is very clean. We’ve been long time patrons and we miss the breakfast and afternoon cookies that used to be served pre pandemic. Times change and it’s still a great hotel
- 5/5
Fantastic proximity to Powell’s and the Crystal Ballroom. Incredibly helpful staff. Quiet!
- 5/5
We enjoyed the historic feel of the building and art, the 24hr coffee and tea, the helpful staff, and the central location
- 5/5
Staff was super friendly. Parking cost extra $36 per night. Wish that was told before booking. Had a wine tasting each night, 5-6pm. Staff was helpful and very attentive. Would stay here again
- 2/5
Staff: Staff at the front desk was phenomenal. Very friendly, very detailed with everything in regards to check-in and check-out. I was surprised by a free bottle of wine. This is where I chose to give 2 stars instead of 1. 5/5 on staff. Room: The room looked nice on entry, but once we started looking, we noticed a lot more than we wanted. The chairs were stained by the unknown. Beds had large stains on mattresses and underneath mattresses. The coffee maker had a used bag of coffee which had molded. The air conditioner did not work the first night and worked for a couple hours the second night (after flipping the breaker off and then on). We regretted booking here and should have stuck with a place recommended too us by others (and those rooms were cheaper). Cleanliness is the only thing we really look to when it comes to staying somewhere as you would assume this is the top priority. We were sadly very dissatisfied with the cleanliness of this hotel. I've stayed in 2 star hotels that were MUCH cleaner. We will not be going back here.
- 5/5
Loved the building the room was nice and it was super clean hotel
- 4/5
Very friendly staff, the building has character and clearly has love in its design. Minor notes of age (rust on the shower’s shampoo bottle nozzle for example), but would happily stay again.
- 5/5
Excellent staff
- 5/5
I'm a platinum member and they didn't want to honor the late check out without a fee. They made me show them where it says I don't have to pay a fee. So they said it's okay, let's waive that rate this time. So I have to proved them. I shouldn't have to do this.
- 5/5
Great location for staying in downtown Portland. Nice facility, friendly and helpful staff. This time they had a very nice wine social with very good live music in the evening. I have stayed there many times. This time my room seemed recently renewed and in excellent condition.
- 4/5
Very clean and nice staff
- 4/5
The WiFi was terrible! The hotel was close to a bunch of homeless people! You could smell urine as soon as you leave the hotel. The room was so great. The staffs are okay. I booked this for 2 days but I was told I only booked for one day! They fixed it later but it showed the front desk lady( Asian) did not do her due diligence and when I told her I booked for two days she kept arguing! Otherwise I had a great stay! Won’t mind staying there for future visits. Please please fix the WiFi!
- 4/5
Nice staff
- 5/5
My wife and I stay here several times a year. It’s one of our very favorite places to stay. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The hotel has a great history and vibe to go with it. The downstairs restaurant is soooo good. The staff is great!
- 5/5
The place has an old world charmed to it, which is so welcome these days! We got a free bottle of wine upon check-in and all was perfect for our anniversary visit!
- 5/5
Location was walkable - 30 to 45 minutes to Moda Center. Lots of restaurants and site seeing opportunities in the area.
- 5/5
Very convenient and very friendly staff- slightly run down in rooms but nothing off- putting. Will stay again
- 3/5
While the staff was very friendly, and also offered a room upgrade (with kitchenette) and a bottle of wine with my VIP status on Expedia, which I’d like to acknowledge, I found the hotel itself quite outdated. The bed was extremely uncomfortable: very soft and caving in, the bathroom sink did not drain, and basically the entire interior looked old and dated, with stained furniture and a bad odor. I am also shocked that coffee is not stocked in the rooms, as this is Portland… Also, this is beyond the hotel’s control, but it was very loud from the upstairs neighbors; not sure if they were moving furniture the entire night or doing gymnastics or what was going on, but seemed like every noise was amplified, leading to a very poor night’s rest. I’m also unsure why hotels have not figured out how to make the doors not slam - very loud. The elevator is also loud and clunky, and you can hear it down the hall. I gave a rating upon check-in with the hotel’s virtual assistant that was never acknowledged by the manager or staff, citing that the experience was not satisfactory. Bottom line, does not seem like this hotel is well managed or well maintained. Sadly will pass on this one next time.
- 3/5
The staff were lovely and very helpful and the bed was comfortable and tidy. The property itself is a bit long in the tooth - older brown rugs, broken tiles in shower, mildew in corners, with old, small and dark elevators. I got stuck in the elevator but the staff was very responsive an got me out within about 15 minutes. The location is central but there seems to be more of a homeless issue near by than other parts of the city we walked. We would not return, but if you get a good deal and it is the right location totally fine option.
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful. The only issue I had was the coffee was off, but other than that, we had a great time!
- 4/5
Convenient location. Parking available and free. Reasonably quiet.
- 5/5
Great place, cool older building with some great artwork and photos in hallways. Friendly staff, clean and good location.
- 5/5
Extremely enjoyable.
- 4/5
Hotel is alright, but no actual food available. Homeless people everywhere outside and that is where you have to go to eat.
- 5/5
We had a great stay at the Mark Spencer. Loved the vibe here. Like a roaring twenties feel. The kitchen saved us a lot of money as we could cook our own food
- 5/5
I only stayed at this property one night while passing through Portland, but all of my interactions with staff were top-notch (everyone was so kind and helpful!), and my room was nice and well-appointed. The bed and bedding were very comfortable, and I didn’t hear any street noise at all from the 4th floor.
- 5/5
Near a lot of shops, restaurants, easy access to uber/lyft and great rooms.
- 5/5
Super nice and helpful staff
- 5/5
Really loved the customer service. Also, some very fun and thoughtful touches throughout the hotel that make your stay unique. Some nights there is a talented live musician, and the hotel had wine and cheese to enjoy while he played. The room was very nice. Being pet friendly with a reasonable pet fee was appreciated. We hope to stay here again in the future.
- 5/5
Friendly staff and very clean rooms in a really central location.
- 5/5
Room was great, clean, bed was amazing, and the view of Mount Saint Helens and city scape was beautiful. Location is pretty good too. Beware as the sun goes down though, being where it is there were some precarious groups after dark. Parked on the street and in open lot with no issues
- 5/5
Staff were all wildly helpful. Place is clean and the bed in the King Suite was SO comfortable!
- 5/5
Staff was amazing. Our room was excellent — the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. Great location.

Enjoyed my stay here, the room was clean and I loved the set up for the double full it’s like a mini apartment! Friendly staff. Loved wine hour and music. Centrally located to everything and felt safe walking around at night with my friends. Got a great price with my plane ticket through Expedia!
- 5/5
Friendly and accommodating staff
- 5/5
Nive room. Free uograde with Expedia VIP. Comfy bed. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
The staff were great and the happy hour was a nice touch. The location is solid being close to Powell's Books, some music venues and the soccer stadium. The room was clean and parking was easy to find on the same block. It was an overall great experience!
- 4/5
It was good
- 5/5
Room was immaculate. Nice art, coffee, and wine. Staff were gracious and helpful all through. Will be back.
- 5/5
Overall, it was a great value and a very pleasant stay. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others!
- 5/5
Clean, convenient. Great location
- 5/5
clean room beautiful area
- 5/5
Great staff!
- 5/5
Great room, very comfortable. Great staff.
- 5/5
Spotless and the bed was amazing!
- 5/5
Room was clean and the staff was amazing and very helpful. They let us drop off our luggage prior to check in.
- 5/5
Stay was outcome horrible false charged me 35 $ Cara when I don’t even have a car then weaseled my deposits tiwards those fees band wanted to compromise a deal with a allegation of the robes in the beingvnit there they are I laundry at hotel
- 3/5
The staff was perfect, very nice and accommodating. The room had everything we needed however was not as clean as I would have expected. There was clothes and hairs left by the previous guest and the sofa bed had such an odor that we couldn’t even sit on it without the smell wafting out… The area is extremely noisy and unsafe. Maybe some thicker windows may help!
- 5/5
Everything banging
- 3/5
There was a fire in the laundry room during our stay, which then left the hotel smelling of burnt toaster strudels. A couple things that could be improved…fan ventilation in the bathrooms and touch up the paint on
- 4/5
Room was very nice and didn't feel cheap.
- 5/5
Yes and Yes! Great room that was clean and friendly staff that were helpful and welcoming.
- 5/5
The front desk staff was very pleasant
- 5/5
Staff was very attentive and helpful, the rooms are a nice blend of boutique and vintage, no complaints!
- 2/5
The hotel did not seem as listed in the photos. The bed was very worn out and had a thin topper which didnt help. The showers were hot and the coffee roasted on site was good. Wont be staying or recommending. The history about the hotel was cool, but we really feel like it lacked charm.
- 5/5
The hotel is located in the Pearl District, which is near a lot of great shopping and restaurants! It’s clean, the rooms are spacious and in a great location with friendly accommodating staff but it’s nothing extravagant! Except they have a great wine service and a bottle of wine with the room depend depending on which room you book
- 5/5
OK, Portland people are just different and I say that in a really good way, but the staff at the Mark Spencer Hotel are really exceptional. The hotel is very nicely located in the middle of everything downtown Portland, so everything you want to do is at walking distance. The hotel itself is just great. I stayed in the master suite and it was just fenomenal. Renovated, nice and super clean. Next time I have the opportunity to go to Portand, I would 100% stay there again,
- 5/5
Staff was great. Great character hotel
- 5/5
Amazing
- 5/5
We stayed in a suite and it was very spacious and clean. Sometimes pictures online are deceiving but that was not the case. The staff was very friendly and I especially enjoyed the option to get a latte and scone right in the lobby with a private cafe-like space to enjoy it. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Everything was good. We stay here a lot as it is located in a great place with restaurants and a movie theatre close by as well as the popular Powells Book store a block away.
- 3/5
On day 2 of my stay i returned to my room to find it smelling strongly of sulfur. i called down to the front desk to notify them to investigate and immediately left the hotel due to the overpowering smell. i returned 2 hours later and the hotel had done nothing. i had to go down to the front desk and request a new room. they did give me a new room and upgraded to a corner suite which i appreciated. this is the most bizarre thing ive ever had happen to me in a hotel.
- 5/5
Great location in downtown Portland. Only stayed one night for an early morning flight the next day. Room was clean, plenty of towels, staff was super friendly. They have a happy hour in their little lobby too.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly staff and nice rooms!
- 4/5
Great stay for the price and location. Elevator access is awkward - two elevators from parking to rooms. John the bellman/wine server/jack-of-all-trades was very kind and friendly. Give that man a raise! We appreciated the wine and cheese with music. Best part is location, just one block from Powell’s Bookstore!
- 5/5
Great staff, clean rooms, good location, good price. Enough said
- 5/5
Clean room. Friendly/helpful staff. Hotel had a lot of charm.
- 5/5
Great location and staff was very helpful and nice.
- 3/5
The room wasn’t ready when we checked in. Room didn’t have hand soap or a pad of paper/pen. Very disappointed with this place. After being told we were “VIP”
- 4/5
Great location and helpful staff! The only real downside was the thin walls
- 4/5
Everything was great except the shower head was awful.
- 5/5
Staff, clean room,
- 5/5
The hotel is fabulous, it’s clean and the rooms are very good size with everything you need and it’s quiet despite being down town The staff are always polite, this is our go to hotel in Portland
- 5/5
Didn't eat breakfast limit time. Hotel was clean and comfortable. Area is it is it is awful wish there was a safer place to take dog out.
- 5/5
Really loved staying here!
- 5/5
The hotel and overall stay was awesome. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Only issue was we were not fond of the sliding door for the bathroom but other than that we loved our stay. Will definitely book with them again.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly staff, walking distance to many locations and central to explore downtown Portland.
- 4/5
Had an amazing time! The staff were friendly, the hotel was clean and location was ideal. Would recommend staying on the higher floors, first floor can get a bit noisy and make sure that you always ask for extra towels. Definitely would stay there again.
- 5/5
This was a perfect stay, as usual. It’s the place I always choose to stay when in Portland!
- 4/5
Nice location, overall good experience. Found a few things in the room left from the previous guest, had a few things in the room that could be better - smart tv didn’t work, low soap in the shower.
- 5/5
Shower tile needs cleaning
- 5/5
Charming hotel, great location, large rooms, free wine - can’t ask for more.
- 1/5
Weird smell in the room
- 3/5
The staff were great and helpful. The parking was hard to maneuver around. The downfall is that the room had a horrendous odor. We had to keep the room super cold to keep the smell tolerable. Other than the hard parking and the awful odor, everything else was great.
- 5/5
Room size was perfect, the bathroom was very impressive - with the separate vanity space and the robes! Soooo luxourious!
- 3/5
I didn't get my bottle of wine as a platinum member
- 5/5
Clean, quiet, centrally located with lots of restaurants and shops in easy walking distance.
- 5/5
Thumbs up
- 5/5
They accommodated my early check in request. The room was clean and comfortable. Everyone was very friendly
- 5/5
We were upgraded to a larger room and it was lovely.
- 4/5
Frequently heard loud thumping noise, particularly in the evening say 9pm-12. Could be ventilation equipment issues or just an obnoxious guest
- 5/5
Great
- 4/5
Upgraded to lovely room. Front desk staff wonderful. Comfortable bed. Street car noise right outside window.
- 5/5
Amazing stay! Loved the hospitality. Shout out to the staff, esp Alex for making us feel at home.
- 5/5
Very nice room and comfortable bed. The staff was amazing. Front desk especially friendly and helpful when asked about surrounding areas.
- 5/5
The kitchen was out of service but everything else was great. Clean, stylish room, excellent customer service, great location.
- 5/5
Great location near restaurants and breweries.
- 2/5
The heater wasn't working throughout the hotel, so they gave us the space heater, which felt ridiculous for such a "nice" hotel. The beds were extremely soft, no back support, had to sleep on the couch. The door to the bathroom wouldn't open all the way without scratching against the floor, which made noise every time someone went at night. In general, the hotel was fine but not at all what I was expecting given the strong reviews. The location was about the only thing I enjoyed.
- 5/5
Great location, big rooms, and kids and staff.
- 5/5
The beds were so comfortable! Slept very well because it was also quiet. Walking distance to shops and restaurants. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Wonderful, friendly staff. Spotless room. Amazing coffee in the morning. Would definitely stay again.
- 4/5
Perfect location. Bed was comfy and bathroom and shower was spacious. Hotel is getting worn - sofa groans, noisy from elevators and thin walls, furnishings getting dated. Kitchen very sparsely equipped (one fork one spoon…). Staff was excellent and checkin and out was smooth.
- 3/5
Bedding was wonderful and comfortable. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Bathroom was dirty, stained remnants all over the floor. Noisy surroundings, people yelling in the streets throughout the night.
- 5/5
Staff were courteous and efficient. Highlights for me were the light and lovely space of a corner room with luscious linens on a king bed, and really hot water and fluffy towels in the bathroom. The hotel has a long history of supporting musicians and artists, which is also nice to see.
- 5/5
Very clean room, lots of dishes in the kitchen. The street noise was a lot at night. Not sure if there was a noisemaker but that would have helped. Also, a fan or some way to cool the room down. Staff was super friendly and helpful all the way!
- 5/5
Good balue and room excellent
- 5/5
Clean room. Timmy at the front desk is the absolute best.
- 5/5
What a wonderful stay, will most definitely be back and recommend!
- 5/5
The staff was amazing and welcoming! We brought our dog with us during the stay and lovely that they don’t charge pet fee. Also, I would call ahead and ask for a spot in the garage as it’s the most secure option to keep your car safe! Overall, great one night stay!
- 5/5
Great location, room was very nice with street view, staff were very kind. Great spot in downtown portland.
- 4/5
The front desk receptionist was outstanding. He had excellent customer service skills and i felt very welcomed. The room smelled a little "musty" i had to open the window to air it out and the chair in the room had a couple stains. Overall the bed was comfortable and clean.
- 2/5
There really wasnt anything. Went down during the hours they were supposed to atleast have coffee and nothing was there.
- 5/5
Would highly recommend staying here.
- 5/5
Extremely fantastic location, cool art deco style, very clean, very nice bathrobes to use during stay, free bottle of wine in room, lovely sitting den area, free music, cheese and wine on some nights in the bar area, and very nice staff.
- 5/5
It was quiet and comfortable. The evening wine tasting was relaxing, and the fresh roasted coffee in the morning was a perfect way to start the work day!
- 5/5
Nice helpful staff, only complaint was the water pressure but it's an old building.
- 5/5
It was great!
- 5/5
Great location! Clean and very friendly/helpful staff. Good rates:)
- 4/5
I enjoyed my stay at the Mark Spencer Hotel. The location is perfect, right in the heart of downtown, surrounded by great restaurants, coffee shops with amazing pastries, and lots to do (Powell’s is super close). The city was especially beautiful with all the Christmas lights, and the hotel definitely added to the whole Portland experience. Also, the free coffee for guests was a HUGE bonus for me - great taste. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the cleaninglessness, but the location + coffee got me.
- 4/5
The staff was friendly and helpful. The kitchenette feature of the suite was surprisingly well equipped, including sharp knives, wine glasses, and a microwave. Unfortunately, the WiFi in the hotel was completely unusable. In the middle of the hotel (e.g. not on a top floor or distant room), the signal strength was so low that neither phones nor laptops could be connected. Additionally, the TVs were modern, but connected only to a cable service, and because of the unusable WiFi, it was impossible to stream anything. In short, it's a great spot if you want to explore Portland, but rather limited in terms of what you can do to relax and enjoy being in the room.
- 5/5
For an older hotel, this hotel is very well maintained.Very very clean.Parking garage is comfortable and nice, and the staff is amazing.
- 4/5
People were friendly
- 5/5
Nice runs that are a bit larger, plus lots of amenities like soft bathrobes.
- 5/5
The convenience the hotel was to everything we needed to do while in the city. The rooms were good and the bed was nice. Appreciate the kitchenette. Rooms are a little dated and could use updating but over all price and quality were good.
- 1/5
I loud party in the room below us was going on all night well into the early morning hours during one the nights we were staying a the hotel. We called the front desk several times about the noise but the party continued and we could not get ANY sleep.
- 3/5
I don’t like how check in was at 4pm. Pretty inconvenient having to fly in and store our stuff in their storage. Also, one of the concierge men had an attitude as if we inconvenienced them when trying to get some stuff out of or stored luggage. We had to get ready in the lobby. Also, the cards they gave us had to be reactivated one night. Other than that it was ok.
- 4/5
Bad: it seemed like it needed a good deep clean. (The fabric on the chair, the corners of the bathroom, a stain quarter size on the bedspread) they didn’t have honey out for the tea or fresh creamer out for the coffee except 1 day when we were there.
- 5/5
No breakers but coffee and tea options !
- 3/5
Room was clean and spacious. Bed was firm and comfortable. What made our experience at this hotel just “okay” was the customer service. I was greeted (or lack there of) by a very rude employee. He was very condescending, disrespectful, and overall made me feel on edge checking in. Additionally, my husband asked for laundry bags, and his response was “They’re already somewhere in your room.” He didn't even bother to give us any or direct us to where they were. We couldn’t find any when he got back. Overall, we will probably not be coming back, especially if that employee is still there.
- 5/5
Nice staff, clean room, very comfortavle
- 5/5
Ideal location. My room had a basic kitchen, which was nice. Staff are courteous and helpful. And they have a laundry facility in the building. Oh, and pet friendly. My dog gave it two paws up 🐶
- 4/5
Location is nice right downtown. We’ve stayed here before but in the tower room. It’s a nice play with friendly staff
- 4/5
Loved the room and the staff. Could hear the riffraff from our sixth floor room. Would be better if they could work with the police to clear the drug addicts from the alley near the hotel.
- 5/5
I have a disability and the concierge was the most helpful person i have ever encountered in a hotel environment.
- 5/5
Everything was easy
- 5/5
No
- 3/5
It was a nice hotel.
- 5/5
Did not use
- 5/5
Shoutout to Rory!
- 5/5
Staff were very kind and helpful, the room was comfortable and spacious, the building is beautiful - lots of old Portland charm - the elevators are smaller than modern elevators - they work great but something for anxious people to be aware of.
- 5/5
Great hotel with lots of options for dining and bars.
- 5/5
The staff were awesome, we enjoyed our free bottle of wine, and the wine hour as well.
- 5/5
Room was very clean and staff were friendly with some useful info for the area. Ended up getting a black friday price so I booked this for even cheaper than usual. The on-site parking is very useful but it would likely be very cramped for any larger SUVs or trucks to get into. It's an additional $35 per night but it is free to come and go and it is locked/secured with a key. Highly recommend due to the area and the public parking being known for break-ins. The public parking is pretty much the same price anyways.
- 5/5
Spacious, bright, and incredibly comfortable room and bed. Perfect location, right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of shopping and great food!
- 5/5
The hotel was great the service was top notch
- 5/5
contact with.
- 5/5
Clean rooms and staff were amazing and so nice! They were amazing and very accommodating
- 4/5
I originslly decided to pay fir 1 night parking..$36 per nite but decided st check in that I ewiuld not park over nite for second night & was told by the front desk person that I should tutn in the parking pass so as to not by charged for second night.. I came to frint desk at 2:30 pm next day & was told that 1pm was the cut-off time to not be charged another WHOPPING 36$ ! Very disappointing & preventing me to be able to have a dinner out! luckily i found a store with $6 turkey & cheese sandwich… I suggest the parking info be printed on the Room key card.
- 5/5
We love this hotel. We stay here every time we are in town! The staff is wonderful, the place is clean, the location is good.
- 5/5
Best hotel in Portland
- 5/5
Fringe benefit: it’s about a block away from the iconic, massive Powell Bookstore, where one could lose an entire day just browsing and shopping.
- 4/5
Room heater not operating very well Shower exhaust fan dirty No extra blankets in room
- 5/5
Staff and customer service top notch, bedding was comfortable, I would definitely go for the larger room to feel more quality as I stayed in both the economy king room vs premium king rooms, definitely two different experiences. Both are nice but premium is definitely worth it. They have wine tasting and a very nice sitting area as well. Overall great stay, hotel is a bit dated but has charm & housecleaning/cleanliness is great!
- 4/5
Hotel was really nice , bed was super comfy. Located next to downtown so was able to walk to restaurants.
- 5/5
Clean room, courteous & kind staff, well located, quiet rooms, comfortable bed, spacious room.
- 4/5
Very clean room, friendly helpful staff.
- 4/5
Staff very helpful
- 5/5
Super clean room, very quiet and wine, cheese and crackers every night in the lobby..
- 5/5
It was in walking distance to a number of places I enjoy visiting. They provided parking for an extra expense, but that was okay with me.
- 5/5
Friendly staff and wine tasting hour!
- 5/5
Great location, friendly helpful staff. Next time we will stay on the weekend so we can enjoy the rooftop bar?
- 3/5
Simple upkeep and some thoughtful additions like hooks in the bathroom and by the door would make this place a little better. Fix the broken bathroom faucets in rm 402–why does a customer have to tell you this?!
- 5/5
Every part of our visit was wonderful. The staff was so thoughtful. And the room was gorgeous. Will definitely stay again!
- 5/5
The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and tidy. It was a little loud out on the street late at night, but the hotel itself was reasonably quiet.
- 5/5
Great location.
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay and the front office staff were very kind and helpful. It has good parking too.
- 5/5
No complaints here! It was everything I wanted for our vacation: walkable to everything we needed, clean, quiet, friendly staff, free coffee! I would recommend and stay again!!
- 4/5
It's good if you can get it for the right price
- 5/5
Very nice staff. Excellent room for a very good price. Great location. Very inpressed
- 5/5
Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
- 3/5
Rooms are alright.
- 5/5
Great room
- 5/5
Will absolutely sat here again!
- 5/5
Clean room
- 5/5
I did not eat breakfast. My trip was personal.
- 5/5
Spacious and well-appointed room. Unfortunately, the heating and cooling did not work. The front desk gave us a space heater, which worked well enough.
- 5/5
Shoutout to Timmy. Great room, great staff, great stay.
- 3/5
Shower didn’t drain, microwave dirty
- 5/5
Clean room, excellent service
- 5/5
Great service!
- 5/5
Staff was pleasant and helpful
- 5/5
Lovely charming hotel. Enjoy the stay. Free wine from 5-6PM and coffee all day.
- 3/5
No coffee maker in room, broken toilet paper holder, no daily room tidy without having to request it.
- 5/5
We stayed in room 309, it sounded like a lot of roller carts or something above our room and also to the side of it near the master suite. Maybe it’s the hotel laundry room or break room idk, but its loud. Up above this room it sounded like something being rolled back and forth throughout the night. Overall still a nice place to stay and maybe that’s just part of staying in an older hotel. Side note, someone broke into our car broke our window at parking meter on the street, directly in front of the hotel entrance. I’d recommend using the parking garage.
- 4/5
Great staff and location
- 5/5
i loved the bathroom it had its one sittin area where you could do your makeup
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
Courteous and helpful staff
- 5/5
Great stay! Accesible abd friendly staff :)
- 5/5
Convenient close to everything clean wonderful service amazing stay
- 5/5
Great service and location
- 5/5
No breakfast
- 2/5
The hotel is old! We were there on a business trip and the Wifi signal was horrendous!! We couldn't get any work done in our rooms in the evening. The place smelled musty and it was just a bad experience! We visit Portland many times a year, we won't be staying here again!
- 5/5
Clean room, close to downtown tourist sites
- 5/5
Very nice hotel in the centre of Portland. Clean and modern. Spacious rooms and the shower was great. Complimentary coffee in the morning and wine in the evening a highlight. Staff were great too. Recommended.
- 5/5
clean room! nice well kept hotel
- 5/5
Clean room, spacious, helpful staff
- 5/5
I love the location and the staff were great. No complaints about the room at all.
- 5/5
Stay very enjoyable. Clean. Comfortable bed and bedding. Bathroom spacious and clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Staying there again.
- 5/5
Happy hour was fun. Staff were amazing - thank you !
- 5/5
This is a great hotel! 100 years old building but super well-maintained. Very friend staff, very clean facility, the only drawback is parking. Hotel near several homeless shelters. With drug-users users around, parking on the streets near the hotel is not ideal.
- 5/5
Friendly, accommodating staff. Beautiful room and the bed was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I’ve ever slept in.
- 5/5
Parking with the hotel is optional, but I highly recommend it. Everything is within walking distance, restaurants, shops, and the stadium (we were in town for a soccer game). The facility itself is clean, modern, and well maintained. Overall, a great stay, we’ll definitely be coming back!
- 5/5
Great hotel in a great location.
- 3/5
The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The location is perfect for downtown stay. The room was clean and the mattress was comfortable. However, the rooms, furniture, bathrooms etc. are worn out. It’s time to refurbished.
- 5/5
Staff was absolutely phenomenal.
- 5/5
Great room. Great location and friendly staff. Second time I’ve stayed here and it didn’t disappoint.
- 5/5
We honestly had a wonderful, welcoming experience since the moment we checked in. Anthony at check in was incredibly accommodating, personable, kind and went above and beyond to ensure our great stay. His customer service was excellent. The room itself has a great view. The decor was eccentric in the best way and the location couldn’t be beat. We would absolutely and gladly stay here again. Many thanks, especially to Anthony, for making my boyfriend and my stay so incredibly wonderful!
- 5/5
a lovely staff and a lovely room
- 4/5
Good staff, clean, basic and functional, excellent location
- 3/5
This hotel didn't offer breakfast. Our room was mostly nice but the bathroom shower could have been cleaned better. The room had a coffee pot but didn't have any coffee/coffee supplies at all. Also, the coffee maker had old grounds left in the machine from a previous hotel guest, which is really unacceptable. If they have kitchen type equipment in the rooms, they need to be making sure that the cleaning staff are cleaning everything well in between guests. We were really disappointed with this especially.
- 5/5
The room was nice and the location was super convenient.
- 1/5
The place was filthy found crushed up pills and ask for it to be cleaned and it still wasn’t. I was told that they don’t have any cleaning staff
- 5/5
Friendly and welcoming staff. Nice older hotel with a cozy feel. Room was larger than expected and very comfortable. Great location…easy walking distance to many restaurants and shops.
- 5/5
Great service
- 5/5
Loved my stay! Everything and everyone was calm. I have zero complaints.
- 5/5
Very kind and courteous staff. Helpful with suggestions on eating and directions. Clean, safe, secure. Portland should be proud to have this hotel!
- 2/5
I thought this was going to be a nice historic hotel downtown, however, our room was not very clean and all of the furniture and cabinets were damaged, the rug was coming up and the bathroom had mold in the shower. The area around the hotel also didn’t feel the safest. We were disappointed in this stay.
- 5/5
Excellent stay in the heart of Portland. Hotel is well-situated within walking distance of great restaurants, shopping and sights. We enjoyed the friendly service and comfortable rooms.
- 4/5
Maintenance of bathroom hardware need to be addressed. The stopper in the bathroom sink didn't work and it was difficult to find the proper water temperature in the shower...the water was either too hot or too cold. It took some finesse to get the right temperature.
- 5/5
Such a cute boutique hotel in a great area of Portland. The self park option was less expensive than valet and felt very secure. The bed was super comfy too.
- 3/5
The room itself is OK. It was poorly laid out as it was crammed walking from the bed to the bathroom but then there was about a 6'x12' of empty space. The bed was OK and I wished there was a coffee maker in the room. I would say the best part of the hotel was their evening reception on the balcony. If the price was right I would stay again but am more likely to check out another hotel in the area.
- 4/5
The room was nice, the smaller hotel felt pretty comfortable. The room was a little stinky even after leaving the window open for a couple days. The front desk was very nice!
- 5/5
Very quiet and comfortable room with comfy beds
- 5/5
I didn't see any breakfast or that they had a restaurant that offered breakfast. I did ask and was directed to restaurants outside of the hotel.
- 5/5
I loved this property and Oregon
- 3/5
If they offered a complimentary continental breakfast, it was nowhere to be found. The room smelled musty.
- 5/5
Amazing hotel. We enjoyed our stay! Everything was walking distance for us.
- 5/5
Didn’t try it
- 5/5
Great place to stay in downtown Portland. Staff super friendly, and rooms were very nice.
- 5/5
I have stayed here twice, and very much like the hotel, but each time I've stayed, there has been a very loud noise that goes on through the night and morning that I don't know the origin of. It's not noise from another room. It is consistently the same loud, heavy thud, at all hours. I'm a very light sleeper, and it's the only thing that detracts from this wonderful hotel.
- 5/5
Great location. Staff is very friendly and professional.
- 5/5
Very nice property. Would highly recommend.
- 5/5
Staff were very friendly and offered great suggestions on where to eat/ visit. Hotel offered free wine and music on Friday/ Saturday. Hotel felt safe, definitely would stay again.
- 5/5
Amazing location.
- 3/5
I asked for a view room, and I got a room on the third floor of an eight story building with a view of the ugly building, directly across the street. I also did not like the fact that I paid $15 for an ice cream and a snickers bar. The room itself was OK, but the bathroom sliding door was broken. I had to manually push it open and close.
- 5/5
Great, clean, spacious room. Quiet building, close to Powell's, Original Jakes! Staff was friendly and helpful!
- 5/5
We truly enjoyed our stay at Mark Spencer Hotel. The room was clean and our expectations were met. A nice small cozy hotel located in Portland surrounded my cafes and restaurants-many options to choose from. We would definitely be coming back to the city and stay here again!!! 10/10 would highly recommend.
- 5/5
Amazing location, great size rooms and facilities. Very comfortable. The only thing I can fault it for is the mattress. It was on the softer side and you'd be dragged into the middle of the bed and I'm very light
- 5/5
Have stayed here twice. Parking lot directly across the street and the staff has been very helpful and nice both times.
- 5/5
Very peaceful and great location?
- 2/5
Dump

They did try to make it right by letting me move to a different room and crediting the first nights state. The second room was at least a bit better. Still subpar cleaning. Still had mold in the corners of the bathroom shower but at least this time it wasn’t in the area your feet touch. The sink wouldn’t drain properly so liquids just kept sitting in there. This also happened in the shower. There was also mascara on the mirror which is not a big deal but shows the housekeeping level. I also found it to be very cold in there because the windows aren’t air tight (just an old building thing) so I turned the heat on. They came in and did the housekeeping stuff while I was gone one day and changed the thermostat so it was freezing when I got back. I was a bit disappointed there wasn’t any food option in the hotel but that’s on me for not thinking to look at that when booking.

Overall great location, friendly staff, the bed was top tier!!
- 5/5
Perfect stay
- 5/5
Clean room
- 4/5
Nice staff. Nice, big room but had an awful smell. Portland is not a nice area unfortunately. We were glad to get out of there.
- 3/5
The hotel is older, when we got to our room, the room was not cleaned. It was stains everywhere and the room had a smell. We ended up moving to another room, that one was a little better. The staff were nice and kind. It’s extremely noisy, but that’s expected staying on a main street.
- 3/5
Issues with payed parking where workers parked in dedicated guest parking during the daytime- requiring to tell front desk staff several times for them to mitigate the issue. Was given room in first floor, so street was very noisy- would have preferred higher level to avoid early morning awakenings. In all, the hotel was fine but considering other hotels in the area charge the same for much better amenities and newer/cleaner rooms, would not return or recommend this hotel.
- 3/5
They did go out of their way to provide me with a birthday tray/ treats. That was sweet, but overall I won’t be staying there again, out dated place.
- 5/5
I had a great stay at the Mark Spencer. The staff were super friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel in an ideal location with perfect staff. What’s not to love.
- 4/5
A nice stay for one night in Portland. Free bottle of wine is a great touch. Rooms are a little dated. Funny photo of some dude in hallway outside room was a little weird.
- 4/5
The showers desperately needed some RMR mold remover. Not enough trash cans in the suite. No smart TV. Sofa bed was uncomfortable for the kids (could feel the bars). Only had 3 towels for a 4 person room.
- 5/5
Loved this boutique hotel! Clean, stylish and comfortable room, very friendly/helpful staff, and a great location in the city. Multiple dining and shopping options nearby. Safe parking in underground garage. I would definitely stay there again!
- 5/5
Good food nearby, Jake’s, Hal’s, and Nuvrei-great breakfast. Rory was wonderfully helpful. The homeless in the area make it a bit sketchy.
- 5/5
Great customer service and very clean space.
- 5/5
Good location lots of places to eat at. Area was a bit sketchy (homeless) but was never hassled and would stay here again.
- 5/5
Our first choice stay whenever we are in Portland.
- 5/5
Nice hotel with good access to public transportation and in a walkable area.
- 5/5
Clean room, very nice older hotel. The staff were very friendly
- 5/5
Clean hotel, friendly staff
- 3/5
The room was spacious enough for the four of us but it could’ve been cleaner.
- 4/5
Great restaurants nearby. Room was fine but strong stale cigarette smell.
- 5/5
Powells is like 2 minutes away, and its easy to walk around Downtown Portland from the hotel
- 5/5
Staff were all wonderful, and a nice location for great restaurants and walkability.
- 4/5
The only negatives were 1) the mattress was worn out and left us achy in the mornings; and, 2) the room was too cool and drafty. The heater couldn’t keep up. P.S. I know it’s the PNW.
- 5/5
Beautiful room with so many amenities. Wish we didn’t have to get to the airport so early cuz check out was noon.
- 4/5
The room was clean, however, the staff at the entrance did not help me with my suitcase, and I had a back brace on, clearly struggling. I had to pull my suitcase up the stairs.
- 5/5
Great property, convenient for business
- 5/5
The hotel’s location is unbeatable—just steps away from great restaurants, shops, and attractions, which made exploring Portland so easy and enjoyable. While the in-room televisions felt a bit outdated and the lack of a fully functioning café was a minor drawback, these details were far outweighed by the hotel’s charm. In fact, I’d love to see the hotel partner with one of Portland’s many excellent local cafés for a pop-up or permanent offering—it would be such a perfect fit for the community vibe the hotel already has. What really made my stay memorable were the thoughtful touches like daily wine tastings and the Friday night live music, which created such a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Honestly, my favorite part of the trip was simply being at the hotel itself. Between the welcoming staff, unique amenities, and prime location, The Mark Spencer Hotel made my Portland visit unforgettable. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city!
- 5/5
Helpful staff, clean and quiet. Lovely room was well presented.
- 4/5
Friendly staff, comfy beds, only issue was the proximity to the rail. It was noisy.
- 5/5
We really liked this property and the location. The corner king we stayed in was really cool with lots of space. We'd love to return and spend more time here.
- 4/5
I loved how comfortable and conveniently located this place was. It made my life easy. Thank you.
- 5/5
The Mark Spencer Hotel strikes a solid balance between comfort, location, and character. It has quirks, but most are minor in trade-off for what you gain: walkability, boutique charm, useful amenities, and a warm and helpful staff.
- 2/5
smelly room, tones of homeless around the hotel. wear and tear all over the hotel
- 4/5
Room not ready at check in, Given ket to wron (already occupied) room. Finally got correct room and key.
- 3/5
It was in the middle of the City with lots of life style around. Not the hotels fault. I enjoyed my stay.
- 3/5
Need nicer staff and I definitely think the beds have bed bugs
- 5/5
Easy walk to train station for trip connections to Seattle, etc.
- 5/5
Hotel had an older hotel feel but was comfortable with great seating areas. The breakfast was a nice extra and inexpensive. Service at the desk was very good.
- 5/5
Great location
- 3/5
The hotel is
- 5/5
cool
- 5/5
Friendly staff and very attentive. Clean, roomy and high ceiling. Downtown and near restaurants, Powell bookstore and cafes.
- 2/5
When asked about the issue the next day, the desk agent said “it happens” and “yada yada yada” dismissing the issue. Bed and room were comfortable. However, housekeeping did not come one day as requested. 2/5 and that’s being generous. Especially if you can overlook being accosted by a fentanyl junkie at 10pm as soon as you walk out the hotel.
- 5/5
Great staff, clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
I did not know this was an ADA room so the bathroom especially was very strangely laid out. The bed was fantastic and the room size was great, but we seemed to be right over the dumpster area so at 4:30am when the dumpsters were rolling in and out we were wide awake! Other than that rude awakening everything else was super nice! Thanks for the wine!
- 3/5
Good location in the Pearl district but rooms are a bit rundown. The phones in the room didn’t work so while there is a restaurant that provides room service I had to go pick it up myself since I couldn’t order from the room
- 5/5
Nice room, excellent service, quite comfortable - wifi rather weak
- 4/5
Minor complaints: 1. The elevator is super slow. 2. Need a recycle bin in the room.
- 5/5
We were in town for a few days visiting colleges and we enjoyed our stay. It was central to lots of restaurants, making it easy to walk. Having coffee and hot water in the lobby at all times was a plus. Staff were all friendly. It's an old building, but they have done a nice job renovating it. I would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
Great location. Older hotel but big rooms.
- 5/5
Staff very friendly and helpful with special requests. Liked the large space of the Executive King Suite, appreciate the kitchenette, and dining area. Highly recommend this hotel. Will definitely book again when we return to Portland.
- 5/5
The staff was really attentive and great. My dog was very welcomed as well. The area around the hotel is a little sketchy at night.
- 5/5
Excellent place
- 4/5
Nice room. Clean and useful kitchen. Staff were very helpful.
- 4/5
The first room they gave us smells horrible, we asked to switch to another room, it was way better. I don’t know why don’t they
- 4/5
Well located downtown hotel. Many dining options in area. Nice wine and cheese hour at 5PM.
- 4/5
Lobby area and entrance carpet was beer spilled
- 5/5
There is bad smell in room and on floor.
- 5/5
A really nice boutique hotel right in the Pearl. Close to many dining options and Powells books.
- 3/5
The property was in a perfect location for walking around downtown Portland. The hotel itself though seemed pretty outdated. No streaming or rental service in the room, every time the elevator moved you could hear loud clanking sounds. For one night it was okay but I wouldn’t stay there for longer than that.
- 5/5
I loved that everything was walking distance. The star was very welcoming and attentive.
- 5/5
Amazing room! The bed is so comfortable. Love the service as well. Overall great experience
- 5/5
Lovely stay! It’s a little bit classy and a little bit quirky just like Portland itself. Great location. Very walkable to many great coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping. Around the corner from Powells books
- 4/5
Property was lovely but rooms needed a deep clean such as doors, baseboards, grout etc.
- 5/5
Great service
- 5/5
I love this hotel. It’s in the heart of Portland and the rooms are amazing. Also, the nearby restaurants are great.
- 5/5
Terrificly central location amid tremendous dining options.
- 5/5
The staff were amazing! From the moment I checked in the front desk was amazing. They made sure to accommodate us right away. They are fast with finding solutions we had a minor inconvenience and they resolved it better than I could imagine. And I also received many good recommendations for places to visit as it was our first time visiting Portland. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay the room was clean to the T the bed was super comfy and I loved the bedroom aesthetic 💗 Soso happy!
- 4/5
Happy hours and easy parking
- 5/5
This property was great for the downtown explorer… it was close to food, ice cream and shops. I love going to Multnomah village and Hawthorne area more. But the experience of staying downtown and on the 5th floor was nice. The bedding was so soft, and comfortable. The parking was secure and the complimentary bottle of wine was a nice touch.
- 5/5
As usual the staff , the hotel , the room was perfect this is why I only stay at the Mark Spencer whenever I am in Portland !
- 5/5
The hotel was in a great location and the room was very comfortable.
- 2/5
Plenty of potential but not worth the money; sheets were horrible and stained, horrible mattress, couch had animal scratches on end and food stains on it, also no support. (I weigh 115 -t shouldn't sink when I sit on it). No salt and pepper shakers, no complimentary bottle of water, bathroom door needs a a 15 minute paint job, windows need to be washed
- 5/5
We love this hotel. The staff is always friendly and the hotel is always sparkling clean!
- 4/5
Rooms were decent size, bed was comfy, great size bathroom with walk in shower. Not much of a view from windows. A bit outdated of a hotel. Location was convenient.
- 5/5
We were in town from SoCal helping a family member out during a very difficult time. The hotel location and property were great. The best part of the stay was definitely the service from Timmy at the front desk. I looked forward to returning to my room every evening, with hopes that he'd be there at the desk to encourage me to come get happy hour drinks. It was a much needed distraction and act of kindness to offset a sad and stressful time.
- 2/5
we left with fee bites from sleeping there
- 5/5
I’m just
- 4/5
Love this hotel, the only issue is parking. Had to pay to park on the street. If you are traveling without a vehicle, it’s an absolutely beautiful place.
- 4/5
The hotel was really nice! They didn’t have their own private parking lot. Sigh, we were nervous abt parking in the city parking lot across from the hotel, paying an overnight fee of $35. We noticed there weren’t much security there… just one video monitor. Our guts were right, our SUV was broken in, breaking a passenger door window glass. Nothing was taken from inside. We spend 3 hrs getting the window replaced. We would stay at the hotel again if they had their own parking lot with security videos all over the lot.
- 5/5
Great location. Good value. Clean and comfortable room. I have stayed here every time I come to Portland. Enough said.
- 5/5
Location and friendly staff.
- 5/5
Hotel was very nice and clean! For the price, felt like should’ve paid more. Service was excellent.
- 3/5
It is downtown in a good area for dining and walking. The famous Powell’s Bookstore is nearby. It is a classic hotel. Unfortunately, the economics of providing parking in the downtown environment requires that they charge $30/day extra to park your car. The mattress on our bed was very saggy in the middle, but I saw stacks of new mattresses in the basement car garage ready to be installed. I assume the problem will be taken care of shortly.
- 4/5
We stay at the Mark Spencer at least once every two months. Love the wine happy hour and music on the roof
- 5/5
Great place and staff but location is a little questionable. Staff had precautions at the hotel so we felt safe.
- 5/5
It's a short walk from places we like to visit. It has parking.
- 5/5
Great wine hour with live music! Charming hotel with character and great service.
- 5/5
I love the rustic feel of the Mark Spencer, I loved it location very close to shopping, I really enjoyed the vibe very much Portland. And the coffee was fantastic.
- 5/5
Convenient parking, clean, and attentive staff.
- 4/5
Frozen and microwaved croissants do not constitute a breakfast and I realize space prep areas are an issue in an old/remodeled hotel. I think the dining/sitting areas could be better utilized around having a self-serve breakfast. All this said, the Mark Spencer Hotel is an excellent base from which to explore downtown Portland and the outlying neighborhoods.
- 5/5
Great historic hotel in great location. Comfortable well furnished rooms and excellent service.
- 2/5
More like a 4. The posted reviews are BS. Don’t waste your money. Plenty of higher end alternatives nearby.
- 5/5
Great hotel and amazing staff. A/C had issues, but they took care of us.
- 5/5
Bed comfort was fine, room was a bit small but had everything you need. Food options nearby were good.
- 5/5
This historical historical property is located in the"Pearl District" within 2 blocks of Powells Bookstore & Jakes Grill. My room.was beautifully appointed with 2 Queen beds, a kitchenette & partial downtown view. Morning tea/coffee available mornings off the Lobby & "wine hour" were unexpected treats after a 2 day xcountry train trip. Staff gracious &.accommodating.
- 5/5
This is a perfectly good hotel about 2 blocks from Powells bookstore. No complaints.
- 5/5
Great place. We stayed there for one night while in portland. very walkable and have lots of restaurants close by. Will stay again.
- 5/5
Central location, good wifi! Friendly staff
- 5/5
Best customer service. Staff members were very nice, helpful and professional. The hotel location is walkable to most tourist attractions and restaurants
- 5/5
Clean , huge room , happy hour in evening on roof
- 5/5
Great stay
- 5/5
Clean, nice, and comfortable
- 5/5
Historic hotel with old world charm, modern comfort, spacious rooms, excellent location and great customer service.
- 5/5
Great stay would go again
- 5/5
Very nice

I strongly advise women and femme-identifying people not to stay here, especially if you are traveling solo. A staff member of this hotel verbally assaulted me with gendered/violent language. I contacted the hotel about it and have received no reply after multiple weeks.
