Reviews
Dinah's Garden Hotel is a beloved choice for many travelers, appreciated for its beautiful gardens, tranquil atmosphere, and friendly staff. The hotel's restaurant, particularly its poolside dining, is highly praised. However, some guests have noted that the rooms could use updates and there are occasional issues with noise.

- Zen environment, truly an island in the midst of hectic silicon valley. - actual blackout curtain - on-site Tesla chargers (albeit at 6kw) - great pool, poolside restaurant and snacks - bright a/c power on light, sorry of cancels the benefit of the blackout curtain

Does not look like a hotel, unfortunately. Looks more like an apartment. Rooms are more expensive than some nice hotels in Las Vegas. Close enough to Stanford.

It’s a very beautiful, well kept property. Booked this place because I read that they had a koi pond and it didn’t disappoint. The staff were also very helpful and friendly. I’d recommend staying here!

Although the property is now run by the daughter of the original owners, she has kept the spirit of Dinah’s in all the right ways. The nostalgia is there in spades—so much beautiful artwork from her parent’s global travels; but also bright modern artwork and tile in the restaurant that today’s market appreciates. Wifi was great and strong-yay! The staff was understated and hospitable in all the right ways. I truly look forward to returning to this relaxing and nostalgic setting.

Love the pool, food, hotel in front of the lagoon. Beds are comfy!

Easy to park, spacious room and quite new facilities.
- 4/5
I loved the unique outside of the hotel. Was very beautiful. Parking was good. Had a restaurant and pool and gym. Our stay was quick and just over night so we didn't use the amenities so I can't say how they were. The fridge had drinks to purchase at reasonable price. Was a quick easy check in. My daughter and I had a 2 queen room. Very comfortable, open and plenty of room. Really the only bad thing I had to say was I wish the lighting for makeup was better. I did love the small mirror with lighting so it worked out to get ready. I thought it was located in a good location. If I'm in the area agian will definitely stay agian.
- 5/5
Front desk staff were super kind and respectful. The room I reserved was the Premium Lagoon room and it had two large beds. The beds were so comfortable and they have drinks available for purchase in the mini fridge in the room. The shower and toilet were very clean too. The view was also very beautiful.

Loved the gardens, koi pond, pool area, and all of the beautiful art and artifacts displayed around the property. Appreciated the water fill station in the lobby so I could refill my reuseable water containers. I didn't eat at the restaurant, but it looked good and was a very nice location by the pool with a nice selection of items.

The thoughtful, calm design of the garden. The room was very well thought out in as far as details like lighting, availability and location of USB charging ports. The poolside dining was great Poolside lunch service was a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry, so it works out.

The hotel allows ducks from the nearby pond to freely enter the swimming pool area. We personally saw duck feathers floating in the water, duck droppings around and near the pool, and obvious signs that the pool hygiene was being neglected. Ducks carry bacteria and germs, and no reasonable guest should have to worry about animal contamination in a hotel swimming pool. When we raised the issue with management, they completely ignored our concerns and gave the standard excuse that “the pool is cleaned every morning.” Based on what we saw, that was clearly not true or nowhere near sufficient. A pool contaminated daily by ducks cannot simply be “cleaned in the morning” and considered safe all day. This was not only unhygienic but also extremely disappointing because the pool was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel. Instead of relaxing, my family felt uncomfortable and disgusted. The management’s dismissive attitude made the situation even worse. I would strongly advise families with children to think twice before booking here unless the hotel takes pool cleanliness and guest concerns seriously.

Funky motel, nice and friendly staff. Paper thin ceiling and walls. Don’t sleep on the ground floor…you won’t sleep. It was cute, but very tired place. My low rating had to do with the lack of sleep because of noise from all angles. Throwback motel, quirky. Could appreciate those guests who love it. Sleep deprivation, dark space, can’t charge to my room at restaurant there, were my reasons for a meh experience.

The room was pretty large but the hotel is outdated and the smell of the room is not fresh.... I will not stay in that hotel again. They need to make some changes and make it more modern. Ordered breakfast in their restaurant, not sure how you could make an omelet with spinach and mushrooms that bad! It should be simple. The smell of the room and the hallway immediately says it's an outdated facility. For that price I will choose to stay in more modern place.

The room I chose was very spacious and kept very clean. The only issue I encountered with the room was the smell. I'm not sure if it was the carpet, but there was a strong, musty odor. While it was tolerable, it made all my exposed clothes and bags smell. I had to wash all my bags and clean my suitcase to get rid of the unpleasant odor. The hotel definitely needs to address this issue.

Room was clean. Booked the Premium King room with Lanai. Upon check in we were given a premium room but it did not have a Lanai. When I asked where The Lanai was they said it was the name of the room and if I wanted a patio you have to reserve a room that said Patio. For a Polynesian branded hotel I assumed a Lanai was a patio so just a heads up when booking. Overall the staff were great, the food was decent and it’s a nice hotel. I would stay again and make sure to get a patio because the gardens are beautiful

Great rooms and amenities, very comfortable beds, great bathroom, nice sized balcony, great pool, good restaurant, beautifully landscaped grounds. Only issue was AC wasn’t working properly and left a msg with the front desk for repair/maintenance. Highly recommend this Hotel property!

Dinah’s is a beautifully landscaped hotel with lots of special touches. It’s a nice change from the corporate, Hilton/Marriott landscape. Our room was huge, with lots of storage, good lighting, and a gorgeous redwood tree outside. I loved that the window opened completely for fresh air. Comfortable beds and heated pool. This is a very large property (there are many buildings) and even though I booked two rooms together, our party was split to opposite ends of the hotel. It was such a long walk between our rooms and so confusing to find our room in the back building that our family couldn’t even find us. The restaurant is decent but it gets really crowded at breakfast and dinner and there isn’t enough waitstaff for the rush, so you end up waiting a while. For the same reason, it can be tough to get a coffee in the morning or a drink if you’re by the pool.
- 5/5
Great bed, quiet. Shower tub combo dated.
- 2/5
We got a room with a jet tub and chose the room because it had a jet tub, only to find out when I filled it up and turned it on a bunch of trash and rose petals came out. I told the front desk they came to the room to clean it. I tried a second time and it still had a bunch of trash that came out of the jets once I turned it on. I took pictures through the whole incident and told the front desk again. No one tried to compensate anything. I paid more for a room with a jet tub, than I would have if I got a room with a regular tub or shower. I picked this hotel based on the jet tub and didn't even get to use it.
- 5/5
Room was clean easy to get to Parking was easy I would prefer a perfume scent in the room, but that is my personal preference
- 5/5
Dinah's is unique and uniquely comfortable, quiet despite the location on a busy street. The lush landscaping keeps cars invisible and the windows face greenery instead of automobiles. The pool is very pleasant in warm weather though we didn't use it in March, We recommend the restaurant, good value--we didn't miss the pretty lousy breakfast buffets found in so many motels.

I had a fabulous time. We had a room right next to the pond. The garden was amazing. Even the ducks and the Koi fish seem to be friendly. This day exceeded my expectations and I will definitely stay here again.

The entire premises was excellent. Nothing that we would see.

The rooms, however, are quite old and in my opinion would benefit from some renovation. Unfortunately, my room also had a very strong smell, which I believe was coming from the carpet. The odor even got into my clothes, which was really unpleasant.

Beautiful gardens. Fabulous fenced dog garden trail. Quiet. I would like a coffee service in the main lobby. The Keurig coffee maker was ok, but powdered Coffee Mate is not great. Land O Lakes makes a non refrigerated Half & Half that would be better. Also the Lipton tea (bitter) bags could be improved by offering an assortment of herbal teas.

This was a one day stay for work. Hotels were all very expensive probably due to the Super Bowl. But this little hotel offered a decent rate. Check in was easy - allowed me into my room early. Nice people. The room was awful. Smelled of old cigarettes. Bedding was thin and made for minimal night comfort. Upstairs guests were very loud. No sleep to be had. It was not worth the price by any stretch. When I mentioned this at the front desk at checkout the young woman was less than impressed with my sleepless tales. Made my work day very hard to get through.

One of my favorite hotels on the planet, hands down. Beautiful grounds, spacious and comfortable rooms, warm outdoor pool, good food. My family lived right next door for several years and always recommended it to our visiting guests. Now that we’ve relocated out of state, we go out of our way to stay here when we travel back to the Bay Area. Go, swim, feed the ducks and koi. You deserve a break.

Great ambiance at Dinah's Garden Inn in Palo Alto. The room was delightful, clean and well appointed. Staff is lovely. Easy parking. Good menu at the restaurant, hearty breakfast. A stream meanders through the lushly landscaped property with ducks and Koi and encourages visitors to meander too. The artwork is awesome and quirky. A wonderful respite. Dinah's is my #1 choice among the many corporate hotels on ElCamino.

The staff were friendly. The hotel room was like a spacious studio apartment with perks. I looked the shared outdoor patio area. I enjoyed the experience.

I stay at Dinah’s garden probably twice a year and have been doing this for about 12 years. It is such a nice hotel! With a wonderful pool and pool bar and restaurant. Everybody is super nice that works there. The rooms are very, very nice and comfortable. And I feel very safe staying there when I’m by myself as a woman. Absolutely love this hotel and the grounds are incredible!

I stayed in the Roosevelt Suite and it was amazing. Huge steam shower! The gardens were really transporting. I felt like I was somewhere else somewhere tropical and not just in Palo Alto.

We stayed for a quick overnight in early August. The rate was good for the Palo Alto area. We enjoyed resting by the pool after a 5 am departure from Southern California. The rooms are nothing fancy, but clean and updated for an older property. We enjoyed the complimentary Wall Street Journal in the lobby. The staff was very professional and welcoming.

Its a nice throwback to earlier era and the heated pool with restaurant is very nice. Its our second time there as location convenient to family we visit plus you can walk to coffee shops.

all good.

Good location, good parking situation. The room was spacious and clean. No complimentary breakfast, but the restaurant was good and A Good Morning is right down the street. Only one thing, the king bed was a bit lumpy. My wife had a "hole" on her side, hence a slightly less than perfect rating. Would def stay again.

My kids and I stayed here for 4 nights while they attended camps at Stanford. Overall, great place! 15 minute drive to Stanford. I used the workout room daily. It's small and basic - treadmill, recumbent bike, elliptical, and free weights, but that was fine. The equipment was in good shape. We didn't use the pool as the restaurant swating wraps around the pool deck, so you're on display at the pool. I had one meal at the restaurant and it was ok, but not great. I would recommend eating elsewhere with so many great spots nearby. The one thing that was very inconvenient was that housekeeping started so late. I put the "early room make up" on my door but housekeeping didn't get to it until close to noon. If you're gone all day, this doesn't matter, but I was hoping to have the room to relax in after my morning workouts.

We loved staying here! Staff is very friendly and accommodating! We chose a room overlooking the lagoon, and the sound of the water was fantastic. Great little patio to sit out and see the ducks floating around. Highly recommend!

We have been staying at Dinah's for over 20 years and love everything about it and especially the gardens and the cafe. The staff is excellent. This stay, the coffee maker was inoperative, there was no decaf tea available, lobby coffee was dry by 8:30 and the chocolates were missing from our room. They are all low cost items that have added to our stay for ever and are .missing
- 5/5
The toiletries they provide are great! My partner and I usually don’t use hotel toiletries since we carry our own but we ended up using the ones they provided. We definitely will be staying here again if we’re ever in the area again.

Hotel is in tranquil setting with fountains in the middle of property and a nice pool area. Plenty of parking (free). Deluxe room has lots of space besides the bed. Room is very clean and well maintained. Water pressure for shower is slightly low but tolerable. Staff is friendly and very helpful!
- 5/5
The grounds have cute little water features and even ducks and koi. The room is spacious. I would stay here again.

Check-in was easy. Both the front desk and room service staff were very friendly and helpful.

Simple, easy check in. A comfortable, clean room and a good onsite restaurant.

Have to update my review from a 5 to a 5+… this was our second visit in the past few months and it’s was fantastic as usual. Would like to give a shout out to Chloe and Oscar at the restaurant. Alejandro and the housekeeping crew. And cannot forget Chris and the managers at the front desk. We had to make a couple of last min changes, and they went above and beyond to make sure we had a comfortable stay, and had room for our dog. Every time we’ve been there, it just gets better and better. The staff welcomed us back like we were family. Wish we could give higher than a five! Thank you Dinah’s!!

I like rooms near the pool. The music on Thursday night was a surprise, nice. Meatloaf dinner was A +. Please discourage ducks from swimming in the pool. It's unsanitary. In my home condo, it's almost impossible get the ducks out. So i dont recommend ignoring them.

The shower even had a jacuzzi tub with his and hers bath robes. We cooked dinner and enjoyed our evening then explored the hotel the next morning. It has a nice breakfast by the poolside. And a lagoon with ducks surrounded by beautiful flowers to walk around. One of the best parts was checkout at 12pm so we didn't have to rush. Was a 10 out of 10 experience. It's so peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommend.

Dinah's Hotel is a little oasis in a very high tech environment not far from Stanford University. The hotel is very charming and cozy. Highly recommend a few nites stay at this hotel.

- 5/5
The restaurant has very good food and service.

We stayed in the room with the lanai and it was roomy and spacious. . Decor is a little quirky and retro and I loved it! Got a room by the lagoon and really enjoyed watching the ducks and fish go by. Has a really convenient poolside restaurant or indoor dining. Best of all, the staff were amazing!!! Best I’ve seen in ages. It’s a cool place.
- 5/5
Love it
- 4/5
The hotel room was large, quiet, had plenty of lights and outlets, a large sliding glass door (although I had no deck it was nice to open for fresh air) and extra towels. Beds were a little hard, but I had lots of pillows to make up for it. The cleaner they use is strong and gave me a bit of a headache. Pool was very awkward to swim in with the restaurant right there, but I am self-conscious, it was also salty which I would like to think is because it was a saltwater pool since Palo Alto is so eco friendly. There is room service from the restaurant, but it's overpriced for what you get. I would stay at the hotel again for sure, would get a room facing the pond though. I would not eat at the restaurant again, it was just overpriced and really did not catch my interest.

Spacious rooms and unique property.

Love Dinah’s Garden! My favorite hotel when I’m in Palo Alto
- 5/5
Everything was just great- safe, clean, personable staff and killer meatloaf. Also KITCHENETTE AND STEAM SHOWER!!! Dinah’s was built back in 1957 and they just don’t make them like this anymore. A true gem.

Quiet, cozy hotel. Outdated but no biggie.

This is a unique property that is not generic. The last time I was at this property was 40 years ago! And it's still great.

Beautiful Setting
- 5/5
This is one of the best extended stays (8 nights) we have ever had at a hotel. The rooms are extremely well-kept, and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. In addition, there is an excellent restaurant onsite poolside with equally friendly and professional staff. Also, the hotel is conveniently located within Palo Alto and the parking is free. Great stay.
- 5/5
Beautiful grounds and nice pool area to relax or eat. Room was very comfortable and had a balcony. 10mins from Stanford University.

Very nice environment

I feel like we stepped into a Palm Springs motel resort, but minus the scorching heat and high prices. This place is such a hidden gem. Before I forget, do not let the casual environment scare you away from the restaurant for an evening of fine dining. Their food was some of the best I’ve ever had, and I can imagine in the summer the vibe is super romantic. I added some pics, but do yourself a favor and have dinner there. You won’t be disappointed. And the staff? The best! Everyone was kind and helpful, and made us feel like we were the only people there. We can’t wait to come back and bring our friends. The retro vibe and the gardens remind me of a visit to a tiki room on an island. Just enough kich to make it fun. Not enough to make it tacky! Rooms were perfect. Ours walked right out to the pool. Will do that again, or get one that overhangs the koi pond! You can’t go wrong!
- 3/5
The location was good - we had to attend an event at Stanford. We checked in just before 9pm so there was nothing open. We could not even buy a bottle of water anywhere. I booked a suite - which is really the way to go - and a standard room. The standard room was dated/old and I prob would have rated the experience really low if not for the suite. I had my mom & sister in the suite and it was perfect! The guy at the front desk/check-in was nice and tried to get me water to no avail (note, I try not to drink from plastic bottles).
- 5/5
Everything was great, the room is a little bit outdated and the ac was extremely loud. The weekend we went was a little warm and the ac on was a must. The restaurant food was actually goood, breakfast is delicious and not too costly.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel! We loved the ambiance & it was so peaceful. 10 min from Stanford, 5 min from Trader Joe's & Safeway. Love the location. Staying here again! The only con was no microwave in the room. But one call to the front desk & they sent accommodations! Excellent.
- 4/5
we had a nice time, but the hotel had more of an "inn" vibe. I expected a bit more. I guess it is more impressive during summer.
- 5/5
The perfect place to gather for several days as family came together for dad’s memorial service.
- 4/5
It has beautifully decorated grounds, the rooms were nice, and I like the balcony. Price was reasonable. Restaurant service was friendly. It was a bit of a problem exchanging the feather pillows (allergies) for polyfill ones. Housekeeping took a long time and didn't understand the request. However, the front desk did follow up the next morning, which was appreciated. Great.locarion.

Great. Good restaurant.
