Reviews
The hotel's location is consistently praised across all reviews, with guests appreciating its proximity to downtown and various amenities. However, the cleanliness and condition of the rooms are frequently criticized, with guests reporting outdated facilities and a lack of cleanliness.

The room was fine, but the TV was not functional, and I reported the issue to Justin who tried to be helpful.

The location is great. It’s close and walkable to many places like Soho, whole foods, many restaurants, etc. The AC worked great. The only thing is two out of the three plugs in our room barely worked. The TV was there but couldn’t turn on. Just FYI, you will have to pay around $16/night for amenity fees tht u can’t deny. If u care about saving money and having access to everywhere, it’s okay but it’s def not luxury.

Air conditioning didn’t work well and it wasn’t even that hot out but the room felt muggy and uncomfortable.
- 2.5/5
A review from an anxious 27 year old girly staying on her own. Unsurprisingly the photos were slightly misleading, and it took some adjusting, but it ended up working out well. I was put in a room in what they called the basement. It’s not as scary as it sounds, but it is below street level so you wouldn’t want the blinds up as people could see in. The windows were very small anyway and most of the space was taken up by the air conditioning unit, so no natural light. It was also right by the street so there was some noise. You are in a busy part of New York though so I’m not sure this would’ve been too different on another floor. The air conditioning was actually what I found to be the loudest. Earplugs, an eye mask and a podcast were a godsend at night. I would’ve struggled without them, and they made me feel safe and cosy. I was a little nervous on the first night but by the second night I was totally fine and learned to love my little basement room. The woman at the front desk offered to move me the next day to a higher floor but I decided not to as I didn’t want to spend my time moving. The shower wasn’t great, it was six small single jets. I’m not sure if my room was generally worse than the others due to it being in the basement, but it wasn’t like the pictures. I managed to wash my hair so it was okay. It did take 10 minutes to warm up so I got into the habit of letting it run for a while. There was only one plug in my room which wasn’t near the mirror so I recommend bringing a long extension lead. There was a long mirror, wardrobe with some hangers and mirror in the bathroom. The bed was comfortable, there were plenty of towels and there were bedside lamps so the lighting was nice. Safety wise I felt safe. There were two locks on the door and always someone at reception. They also had a locked cupboard to store your cases around check in times. They had a free water and coffee machine in the little lounge area. The wifi worked well.

Best location in NY -- the heart of downtown. The room was beautiful, the water was warm, even hot if needed. Our room was on the 5th floor. AC worked great. Some noise on Saturday night at 2 am and 4 am -- when the bars close, it sounded like the police were on hand to help the college students keep control of themselves. The people who staffed the front desk were not open to questions, however the breakfast staff and the room attendants were helpful. Breakfast was just fine -- hot coffee, hot chocolate.

free coffee and hot water, location the hotel staff is very rude and lacks respect for customers. Not helpful for anything. Room itself was horrible. Too much traffic noise, cant sleep, the heater in the toilet dosent work, noises from the neighbours, there was no housekeeping services provided(it was on request) and the automatic gate was not opening and no one was answering the bell. Hopeless really.

The room was very clean and the staff was super helpful and very nice. The walls are pretty thin so you and others on your floor have to be considerate with the noise level but other than that it was an amazing short stay!

The location was fine. Well it’s a very basic room and a bed in it. They didn’t even have enough furniture for me to put my suitcase on. You can’t call the front desk from your room. It felt like I was in a prison or something. Not pretty at all.

The location was great. There was lots of grocery stores and coffee shops around and if you enjoy New York without the hustle and bustle of Times Square, this is perfect. Don’t really have a lot of complaints as the staff was kind and accommodating and their rooms were what you would expect for New York City. What I did not like was our personable belongings were not cared for in a manner which I would expect. We did have an area we could put our belongings, however, it was not secure, and people were going in and out of it consistently without the watchful eye of front desk.

I liked how convenient the location of the hotel was I think its ironic that the hotel would put a sign in the bathroom about how they care about the environment and want to save water. Meanwhile, to get the sink or shower to run hot water, I was told that you had to leave the sink running for 10 min. I'm not kidding, it seriously took 10 min of the water running to get hot water. I don't understand how its possible for a hotel water system to be so messed up that thats the system to get a hot shower. Also, its really hard to stay on the first floor of this hotel when the night desk person listen to TV on full blast

The hotel is on Houston, so it's extremely loud, no fault to the hotel itself, but there is almost no insulation on the walls or windows so you really feel like you're sleeping on a fire escape, it's so dang loud. The interior doors to the rooms are almost as loud as the street outside, this is 100% at fault of the hotel, anyone on your floor leaves their room, you know it because it wakes you up. The price was why we chose this hotel, the location is almost ideal, but the noise is why we'll never go back. If they fix the doors and windows noise, we'd go back in a heartbeat.

Before writing this review I sent a message to the hotel stating my experience and giving them a chance to respond. There was no reply, no concern for my issues. Unfortunate, this could be a viable option in the future, but not with this service. I will not be staying here again.

I LOVED the location. It was near one of the main lines for the train (the F line) which was perfect if you’re going almost anywhere in NYC to Central Park and Brooklyn. Theres so many nearby famous coffee shops and parks which was great. Lots of great food options nearby, too! Also I know people complained about the noise outside, but we’re also staying at a hotel on the corner of one of the busiest streets. It didn’t bother me and I preferred the NYC city sounds. Also, I felt extremely safe going in and out of the hotel since you needed a key card to get access. The ONLY thing I didn’t like was how long it took for the water to heat up to shower. The first night it was fine and didn’t take awhile. But on my last night, it felt like it took centuries! I don’t know if it was because I was sooo tired. But that’s my only concern/complaint.

The room was clean, and the AC worked great. There was no soap initially in my room, so I had to go to the front desk about the matter.
- 2/5
Staff did not enforce quiet hours and the doors throughout the building do not have the hydraulic arms that prevent doors from slamming. Fire alarm is also faulty, causing it to sound off in the middle of the night despite no threat to safety.
- 4/5
The room was clean. Bed was a little low. No refrigerator or safe. No conditioner in the shower. Just shampoo and body wash. Reasonable price for 1 night stay. They actually hold your luggage for you. They have a storage closet. That's a win.

The accessible room was "Garden Apartment Style" -- i.e. in the basement --but this was a small, clean, quiet well-kept hotel in a perfect location for my needs. Nothing fancy but highly recommended for anyone who wants to be located in the West Village, SoHo, Lower East Side.

When asked for housekeeping services, I never got it. I had to ask multiple times for anything and everything. The needs are really low to the ground, was not expecting that. The room key reader on my door died and was not fixed, thank goodness someone was in the room to open the door!

Everything was clean and good location near my daughter’s apartment. For the amount charged the room was overpriced. Very loud — paper thin walls. Bathroom was extremely small. Took 10 minutes for hot water to flow, and one evening the water never got hot.
- 4/5
The bathroom was clean but the body wash, shampoo, and conditioner containers were broken and we were unable to use them.

This is a great option it you’re on a budget. It’s not a 5 star hotel, and there are some things that are a little annoying (hot water can be iffy, internet is not great) but for this price, it’s an amazing bargain. It’s clean and its stylish. I’d stay there again. And I used to live in the neighborhood, so it was fun to be there again!

The room was quite large compared to most of the hotel rooms in New York I have been in. The location was perfect. It was close to dining, entertainment, shopping, etc. The bathroom was clean but had a major issue with water pressure. The water pressure in the shower was low at it's best and at it's worst was just dripping out of the faucet. The staff was friendly and responded quickly to send someone to repair it but next time I went to shower it was the same issue.
- 2/5
From the Lower East Side. Know the shops well. It's winter. Heat was fine. NO HOT WATER! Told by staff to let the bathroom sink and tub to run hot water valves for 15 minutes before any hot water would flow! Only then would the hot/warm water briefly come out. Real bummer.

The best bang for your buck in this area, given the stark price differences in the East Village. The only issue we had was that the shower wasn't giving hot water, which was fixed right away when the mechanic showed up at 9am. So make sure to do your room check first thing when you arrive, rather than find out at 8 am like us. Either way, we felt safe and were able to navigate the city easily from this area.

The room was actually quite nice for the price and overall situation. Comfortable bed, good shower, towels that didn't suck. Only issue is that the elevator (I believe) makes this horrible noise every time it's used, and it's basically impossible not to hear in your room. It's a self inflicted wound that the hotel could solve, vs the outside street noise. Bring ear plugs.

The room felt a little run down, definitely not as nice as it looks on the website photos. The bed was ok, we found some ash? under our pillows, or maybe just dust. The bathroom did not feel as clean but what hotel feels clean regarding a bathroom thousands of people use lol The staff was fantastic, everyone was suuuuper nice and accommodating. I didn’t catch her name (shame on me) but the skinny girl at the front desk with the thick black framed glasses was sooooo nice! I would stay here again just because of her and the location. Thank you for making our stay easy and comfortable, definitely made us feel better about our choice since the facilities kinda let us down. This girl deserves a raise!!!! ***If it helps, she checked us in on Monday October 20 at around 1pm. Again thank you, you were great!!!

I took my daughter to NYC for the first time and wanted her to experience an authentic experience. This room cost so much money but I still checked out a day early BY 11 am and happily paid to stay somewhere else. I let them know I was leaving so they could rent it again, and they STILL denied my refund. This was an unsafe space that falsely advertises on Expedia and takes advantage of Expedia being unable to refund the cost of these awful rooms rented through them. Life is hard and these people are taking advantage of us as we have become accostoumed to everyone having their hands in our pockets. They are terrible people with terrible managment in a terrible property. Expedia DID make me whole on account of who they are. They are a wonderful corporation but The Gatsby Hotel is also taking advantage of them along with the consumer.

I want to like this hotel very much. It is in a convenient place; the staff is very friendly; the room seemed clean to me. But they charge a resort fee on arrival. Yes it is advertised in the listing. But their website says it is for business center access, concierge service, housekeeping(?!), In room water, in room coffee, in room safe, and phone calls. There was no safe; there was no in-room coffee; if I make a phone call charge me! If I want to use the business center to print or use the internet then charge me! Don't charge me a flat fee in advance. Also the sink barely worked; the toilet barely worked. And I was given a room in the basement with a tiny porthole window and I don't think it was made clear that that was going to be the same price as any other room. If you tell me in advance I will get a discount for a basement room then I might take it, but don't surprise me with it.

The rate was ridiculously high for this bare bones accommodation. The room itself had more of an old dorm vibe rather than a boutique hotel feel. The windows are old and do nothing to keep out the noise of a very busy street. There are no curtains to keep out light. Service was nonexistent. The television did not work and there was no support to repair it. I would not stay here again and would advise anyone looking for a decent night's sleep to look elsewhere.

Location cannot be better if you want to explore East Village. The reception staff was very helpful and friendly. However, their bathrooms seriously need work. Sink water has barely any pressure and so does the shower - if you can figure out how to turn on the shower without calling the reception. The water does not drain quickly in the bathtub so you have to stand in your own soapy water while taking a shower - yikes! There was dirt and hair on the room floor so they need to work on that too. I paid $350+ for 1 night because I wanted to stay in East Village but I would rather pay $500 and stay at a better hotel or stay somewhere slightly far for the same price or less.

I paid $350+ for 1 night because I wanted to stay in East Village but I would rather pay $500 and stay at a better hotel or stay somewhere slightly far for the same price or less.

This place was disgusting! We couldn’t even stay here - immediately checked out and found a new, much nicer, and even cheaper hotel. The room had food crumbs all over the floor, stains on the sheets/pillowcases, and just overall dirt and grime everywhere. When we talked to the front desk about wanting to leave, they came up to our room with a handheld vacuum to try to clean the floors… which obviously did nothing. Staff was at least nice so that was the only redeeming quality. Would not recommend staying here when there are so many other options.

Loan the fairy clean the from a very small refrigerator, no coffee or no complementary water in the room. I would stay there in a pinch, but more than one night isn’t worth it.

Toilet did not flush - I had to lift the tank lid and do it manually. There was no hand soap. There was half a roll of toilet paper and no backup. The tv did not work. The shower did not have hot water. My room had one window and it was obstructed by a noisy AC unit.

Beds were comfortable, but had to call twice for assistance with TV not working properly at night and TV screen was so dark you could barely see it. It is very expensive to stay here over Fourth of July w/e so getting something stolen from my room is very disappointing. I expect a refund for the $40 worth of gifts in the bag. Complimentary coffee in the lobby was nice but communication from front desk to housekeeping needs to improve and should never be stealing in a hotel room.

The property is clean and very conveniently located amongst many restaurants. The room was clean but the facilities overall were worn out and you can see and feel the wear. The outlets were so loose they could not hold a plug inserted. The elevator broke down during one day. There was no hand soap provided for the rooms. The body wash was in single-use plastic. The clothes iron had a big gunky stain, and the ironing board had holes.

I have stayed at the Gatsby many times due to its convenience for my visits. I really like the place. My TV did not work, but I didn't even address the issue as I did not go to NYC to watch TV. The Gatsby is a good deal for the cost.

The property also said it had windows, which I wanted, but the rooms window were completely blocked by an air conditioning unit and if there were a fire, there would be no way to get out due to this. The room I got was on the bottom floor (104) and that is a really place in the building to have a room. It's right by the street and you can hear everything happening, from people walking by to cars, etc. all hours of the day. Did not sleep super well. The room was also very small. It would be hard to have a full sized suitcase in the room to get stuff out of. Thankfully I only had a small carry on. 2 ft on side of bed.

However, the cleanliness of the rooms needs improvement. I was downgraded from a ground floor Queen suite to a basement single bed suite due to unclean flooring in the original suite. Unfortunately, the basement suite also did not appear thoroughly cleaned. While it didn’t have visible crumbs or clusters of dust and hair like the first room, the floors still didn’t seem mopped. Based on my experience with both suites, regular and thorough floor cleaning does not appear to be a standard practice. Additionally, there was no hot water available in the evening. I was advised to let it run for 15–20 minutes, but even after that, there was still no hot water. Pro-tip - in the morning you can get your warm shower if you let water run for 5min. Unfortunately, quite disappointing experience for 800 CAD for 2 nights. I know New York is expensive, but still...

I liked that the staff were really nice, they were respectful and very helpful with everything I needed. What I didn’t like was having to call maintenance on the first night on the second day for things that could’ve been checked before my stay. Overall it was a nice spot to stay at surrounded by a lot of areas to shop and eat.

I was greeted warmly by the front desk personnel and immediately assigned to the hotel room. I was very pleased with the set-up and cleanliness of the entire facilily that I had access to. I would strongly recommend that my future stays in the Gatsby hotel room be on the 6th floor, preferably with an inside room away from the street traffic noises.

Clean, helpful staff, nice room, only negative was shower took a bit to get warm
- 2/5
Loud inside and out. The park nextdoor and its parties are out of the hotels control. But other sounds are not: the elevator sounding an alarm as the door closes at each floor. Every room door needing to be slammed shut. The complimentary earplugs on my bedside table were a nice touch, but not nice enough. Also: I had to run the water for 10 minutes before the faucet leaked out luke warm water. No thanks.
- 5/5
Simple, but clean and very nice hotel with friendly and useful staff
- 1/5
Walls a paper thin. Outside noise makes it nearly impossible to sleep if you're on a street side. Rooms are alarmingly small. TV didn't work. Have to use ring doorbell to enter the hotel and their system was down so it was a 10 minute wait until someone came down and manually open the lobby door
- 4/5
We had a three nights stay at the Gatsby Hotel. It was extremely clean and conveniently located. Staff were friendly and responsive. The room had two double beds. It was a tight fit for the four of us, but I felt the hotel made the most of the space available. There was a fair amount of street noise, but it is New York City after all.
- 5/5
Alex was very friendly!! The stay was nice. The location is good and there is a train station two blocks from the hotel.
- 4/5
The hotel was satisfactory for the price. The walls are thin and the elevator is loud and can be heard from the rooms. A few items were left behind from previous guests like dirty socks in the closet. However, the staff were friendly and kind.

First night we went in for check-in. The room was a mess. They cleaned it up and the bed still smelled like Body Oder. I asked them for a discount. They said they would give me a discount, but they didn’t. They charge my Visa after I left they never gave me a receipt for my refund.

Our stay was really good was not expecting the room to be small but it turned out good and we went to a lot of places we had planned to go to and we picked a good area to go to all of the places we went too.

We wanted to stay in East Village near family. The Gatsby Hotel is a great location. The rooms are simple, clean and quiet. We had a great time!
- 4/5
Close to a lot of places
- 4/5
Good place to just sleep the night. Close to train, and a great taco truck. Water pressure was non existent but you can still get a quick shower in. Would stay here again for a quick trip to the city. Good for solo traveler or a couple, small rooms.
- 2/5
There was no hot water in our room. Hotel tried to fix but did not stay hot. Water only got a little above cold - not even to warm. Everything else was good . . but no hot water is a deal breaker.
- 3/5
Location is good, however we didn't have any hot water one morning
- 5/5

- 3/5
10-20 minute wait for hot water, scuff marks on walls, damaged drywall, poor interior paint job, shoddy workmanship overall
- 4/5
Super nice people working there! Everyone was very helpful and friendly.
- 2/5
Realized I left sweatpants hanging in the bathroom after I checked out. Called and asked for them to be put w my bag. When I picked up my bag they said the sweat pants weren’t found. When I got home they weren’t in my bag so they were in the bathroom on the door hanger like I said when I called
- 2/5
Too expensive for what was offered. Two full sized beds placed right next to each other. Very noisy in the early morning hours when partiers got back from the bars. The tv didn’t work and we had to have someone come help us with it two nights in a row and the phone in the room didn’t work. Not really a hotel in my opinion
- 2/5
Light and timer switch non-functional in bathroom. Light in main room not functional. TV non-functional. Towel holder shelf coming off the wall. Extremely noisy interior and exterior. Hot water very uncertain.
- 4/5
The Gatsby is in a GREAT location...it was super convenient for what we wanted to do, and the price was nice. The staff was very pleasant and helpful (they brought us a blow dryer to use!). Our room was clean but small, and it was located in the basement. The windows were tiny, which was just as well because we were below the level of the sidewalk. There was a bit of street and sidewalk noise, but nothing terrible.
- 3/5
Overall, was an OK experience. The location did get rather noisy at night (even by NY standards), but it was manageable. Water pressure in the sink and shower was often low, and the hot water came and went randomly. On some days there was more hot water than others. The staff was friendly, but often neglected to keep the coffee and tea tea properly stocked, and they did not replenish the soda fridge in the 5 days that I was there. The bed's fitted sheet was too small for the mattress. It came off several times and was impossible to get back on. The room's wooden floors were not kept very clean. It was frustrating leaving the shower knowing that your feet would get dirty again almost instantly if you you need wear sandals.
- 5/5
We had a great stay. The property is clean and beautiful. The staff is friendly and helpful. A beverage room has coffee, tea and a microwave. Walking distance to so many areas, Chinatown, Little Italy and so much more. Lots of good shopping and eating all around. Whole Foods is a 3 min walk, very convenient. Not a place for you if you want quiet, a lot of noisy traffic, but it dies down by midnight. Complimentary earplugs provided! It was a fabulous stay.
- 4/5
No hot water in the morning
- 1/5
Would not recommend this hotel to anyone and would not stay here again for any reason.
- 4/5
We were pleasantly surprised that our room was quiet, even though it was in a busy neighborhood. Very close to Whole Foods and Russ and Daughters. Will stay here again when I return to NY.
- 3/5
Fine but very noisy inside. The elevator made a very loud humming sound when it stopped that made it hard to be in the room without going nuts. There were people in the hallway talking loudly in the middle of the night, and the maintenance in the room was mediocre. For a similar price there are deals on decent places, but this one is just cheap. The staff was excellent, things were very clean, and being next to Yonah Shimmel, Russ n Daughters, and Katz’s was phenomenal!
- 5/5
It is a reasonably priced hotel in the heart of non-touristy lower Manhattan. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It is not the fanciest room but who cares! You’re going to be out and about exploring the city.
- 2/5
DO NOT STAY Here because you might be put in the basement rooms with barely a window.
- 1/5
Room with low quality bed - basement street level loud noise -
- 2/5
I was surprised at how awful our room was. The curtain was off of the rod on one part and in the morning my daughter attempted to raise the shade and that was broken. the bathroom door lock was broken and i couldn’t get out of the bathroom until i worked with the lock. The finale was when we wanted to check our bags when we checked out and did not feel as though checking our bags was necessarily safe. the lady at desk wanted us to leave them in the lobby and trust her to put them somewhere out of sight. We could have done better for $500. Won’t go back. Too many other options.
- 4/5
In-room coffee was not equipped.
- 4/5
The elevator has a loud long beep when closing, and there's a lot of street noise (but hey it is NYC) Bed was very comfortable and there was lots of natural light. The area is very walkable and fairly close to the subway station.
- 4/5
Not bad but a bit utilitarian
- 5/5
Location was good and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable
