I think they should be more honest that this is more like a hostel than a hotel. I was not prepared to share a bathroom, and did not notice when booking it cleary stating that you would need to share a bathroom.

We chose this hotel based on great reviews, but our experience was highly disappointing. The only positive was being allowed to check in early, though the front desk agent seemed bothered rather than welcoming. The major issues began at 10 PM with a heavy metal storage room door right outside our room slamming repeatedly for an hour, startling us awake. I messaged the hotel; they apologized and stopped it, but the disruption was already done. Later, we heard front-entrance doors slamming too. The hotel refused a refund because they were "full," and even Expedia couldn't convince them (though Expedia stepped up and gave us a $200 credit for the awful experience). To make matters worse, the next morning at 9:15 AM, there was no coffee available. When I mentioned it, a staff member rudely yelled that it wouldn't be ready for 30 minutes. Later, we returned to find the front desk thought we had checked out and were about to clear our room with all our belongings inside! The room quality was poor: clean but stained towels, mismatched/tacky toiletry bottles, and a king bed pushed against a wall, making it hard to get out. The mattress was so cheap we could feel the springs. Look elsewhere for better service and comfort. I do not recommend this property.

The hotel has a very good location and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Although I had booked a room with a shared bathroom for the first night, they immediately upgraded me to a better unit free of charge. Everything I requested was provided, and I really appreciated their willingness to accommodate my needs. On the downside, housekeeping is not done regularly. Rooms are cleaned, and bed linen and towels are changed only upon request. The rooms are very basic, quite small, and lack sufficient storage space for personal belongings. Weekend nights can be very noisy, which may be an issue for light sleepers. The biggest inconvenience for me was the shower in the bathroom—it could not be adjusted, so I had to either wash my hair every evening or buy a shower cap to keep it dry.

The room size was fine and the room and bathroom adequately clean. The staff at the coffee spot nice. Staff had blank stares, made you wait without telling you what was going on - zero energy or warmth. The window shade was broken - could not open the window shade to get light, they did not fix it. The window was opened by the air con in the window which was not moveable - made the entire room freezing, and cigarette and weed smell from the smokers below entered freely all night. No way to change - I tries to block it by sleeping with my suitcsae in front of the aircon ontop the bed. The heat went on and off at its own will - making it very hot and then freezing. As it was off when I came, it then melted my suitcase when it turned itself on. Staff listened to my issue of a curling iron plug breaking into the wall, they said an electrician would check it out, writing or pretending to write it down. It was never checked, the room was not cleaned, the new desk person had no idea what I was talking about when I returned. They did not clean or service the room. Loud sex from a neighbor who brought in a prostitute, sounded like it was in your room.

The bedroom was quite comfortable. If you choose a shared bathroom room, the bathroom is impeccably clean. Staff was quite kind. Plenty to do within walking distance. Would stay here again!

Apparently a converted boarding house, this property retains much of its former vibe. A good budget option, but don't expect frills. The interior has been nicely if simply upgraded, but the entrance still looks like you're walking into a random restaurant basement, the bathrooms are two to a floor, and the windows only barely filter out the street noise. But if all you need is a decent place to sleep, The Flat is worth considering.

The bed did not have a box spring or any sort of support beams, which led to our mattress literally sinking through the gaping holes in the frame. Awfully uncomfortable and led to terrible sleeps. The shared bathrooms would not have been so bad if there were more / it was more proportionate to how many rooms there are. Also one of the bathrooms was locked and unusable for the majority of our stay. This meant needing to travel down to another floor if you needed to use the washroom. Overall a pretty uncomfortable stay and would not recommend it to anyone.

Great location and easy to access subways and buses. Clean room and bathroom. Water not consistently hot enough when showering, twice during my stay shower was room temperature (at least it wasn’t cold). Not the quietest as the floors and walls are not carpeted/wallpapered so sound carries, earplugs/earbuds can help. Good internet, I was able to do video calls for work, but you are staying here for the location, not to hang out in the room! If price is right, would stay again.

Great location! Room was clean, as were the restrooms. Free coffee all day long. My room was facing the street: it was IMPOSSIBLE to fall asleep, with garbage trucks doing their work literally the entire night. Luckily they gave me a new room in the back, that was a bit better; very loud airco from the neighbours though. Make sure you bring earplugs and don't get a room facing the street. Staff was New York style (un)friendly, except for one really nice guy who was there mostly in the evenings.

Very cute affordable hotel right in Chelsea. I loved the central location having lived in the area in the past. The hotel is simple with shared bath. This is fine for me as I am used to old skool B&B's in the uk which were all like that back before the 2000's. The bathrooms as very clean. I will stay again but, next time, will specify a room on a lower floor. I was on the 5th and it was too much for me some days after a lot of walking (no elevator). Also the soundproofing is not good at the hotel. I was next to an alley which had noise all night. I made it work for me by keeping AC on. But I will also ask for a room on the other side next time.

I'm sure this is on me but I must have failed to notice when booking that my room would share a bathroom and would have no closet space. Honestly it just never occurred to me that could be the case! It was also extremely difficult to find the street entrance (no signage - very sketchy looking door) which was locked upon my 6pm arrival and had me standing in the rain for 5 minutes before opening. Not a great first impression. Overall the place is fine, but it in no way deserves the high ratings I saw on Hotels.com

Walls are not very sound-proof: can hear loud sounds of constant door-slamming starting 5am, very hard to have a good sleep. Room smells a bit weird and there could be better air circulation. There is a sink in the room to wash hands/face, but the water never drains. Entrance is hard to find (a small blue door next to a bar). Otherwise, it’s a decent place for a short stay.

It’s in a good location. Shared bathrooms and one was out of order on my floor so one toilet shared by 10 rooms. When I called about it the staff said it would be working in the morning. It wasn’t. Beds are too short and very uncomfortable. My room also had a skylight as the only window, with no covers so it was pretty light in there all night. Four floor walk up on uneven, slanted stairs. Rooms have nothing but a sink and bed. Not even a cup, and water to drink is down on the first floor. I was told none of this at check in so I had to go up and down to get water bc the sink is too small to even get a water bottle filled. This place was cheap, but not especially cheaper than other hotels in the area. Spend the extra few bucks.

It's a very convenient location in manhattan. My window faced the street, and had a permanently installed window AC unit. It was cold, so the AC unit was not operating, but it made it so the noises from the street were loud (it's a mixed use street - so loud banging of loading up trucks all night). It also meant the cold air drafted in through the window. There was a space heater there that didn't work, but eventually I figured out that there was a thermostat that controlled some baseboard heaters. There was a bedside lamp that looked cool, but had no lightbulb, and a cord that was wrapped and draped over the lamp arm.

I didn’t so much mind the sound of the connected bar (which was very loud though indistinct). The real issue began as I was laying in bad with the lights off and I heard someone say “I’m not really allowed to do this but ____ isn’t here…and you all are dressed really well…” and this employee (of either the bar or hotel) brought a group in from the bar and gave them the next door room to party in. Until the bar closed their door was SLAMMING every 1-3 minutes as people came in and out. There was pounding on the door as champagne (and other drinks?) were delivered and yelling in the hall. This building is all metal, brick and concrete so it’s all as loud as if it were happening in your own room. This was probably the worst and most nervewracking stay I’ve ever had in NYC. The price is great…but not if you hope to sleep. At all.

Close to lots of train lines and bus stops. Room was clean, looked recently updated too. Personal window unit kept the room perfect at night. Modern design and the complimentary water, coffee and tea was a welcomed surprise. They had a community fridge, vending machine, lounge seating and super friendly staff! Outside access door locked at 10pm and the blue door was easy to spot. I really enjoyed my stay and would come back Bathrooms were cleaned often, you could smell the bleach daily, however the toilets were clogged twice during my three say stay. Could have just been bad timing on my part but it was gross.

Only bad thing was that the toilet sticks out so far that I couldn’t shut the bathroom door when I sat down! My knees stuck out over the door’s threshold. Luckily I was traveling alone so it didn’t matter, but if my husband was with me, it would’ve been bad news!
- 2/5
The room, although cheap, looked pretty chewed up. There was a dusty AC unit in the window and as a result there was a terrible draft that was not fixed by the heater in the room. The sheets were dingy, the wallpaper was torn, and there was water damage on the shelf that held the sink. The room was so small that there was no surface to put anything on apart from the bedside table and a row of hooks on the wall. There was also very little sound privacy.

Haven’t seen a private room with spacious private bath for under $100 in NYC for like 20 years. Rooms are just the right size for a single. Shower is large. Twin bed is pretty comfy. Large LED TV on the wall, desk, wardrobe. Drinks station on first floor was great… coffee, tea, ice, filtered water. Location is great. Next to a park off 5th Ave. Hot water in shower took a while but got very hot eventually. No way to control room temp. Room was hot, bath was unheated so have to leave the door open. Fairly clean.

Location & price were exactly what I needed. I saw a show at the Gramercy and a short walk to the theater was what I needed I’m 62. My legs are very weak and I lack balance. Climbing the stairs to the 4th floor was very difficult. Another guest helped me with my bag. This was my fault for not checking. I assumed you had an elevator. If I stay again, and I will try, I’ll definitely need a first floor room. Otherwise I thought the building was very cool.

The walls felt thin, I could hear the next door slamming their door at night. It woke me up. Bathrooms were regularly cleaned it seemed like but the water in the shower didn’t drain well so I was standing in a pool of water towards the end of my shower. I stayed 3 nights, and there was just one morning when all bathrooms were taken. Other than that, it was always available. I didnt even see any of my neighbors. There’s no elevator but I am happy I stayed on the 3rd floor since everyone from upstairs must all walk in front of the 2nd floor rooms while coming down. The mattress in my room felt old, it was pretty soft and it sunk in the middle. I am 5’3 and I was pretty much able to touch the foot of the bed laying down. The duvet cover had an old stain but I didn’t make it a big deal since the sheets seemed fresh and clean. I found a spot on the floor with crumbs so maybe it wasn’t vacuumed properly. The sink in the room helped a lot. Bring tissue if you need it, there’s none. Don’t stay here if you want that 5 star hotel experience because you won’t get it here, and don’t expect it when you come here. This place is very minimal and reflected in their price point. I was able to save $600 by staying here in December and I would stay here again if it saves me that amount again. I would not come with little kids, the whole floor will probably hear them. I only interacted with 2 receptionists and they were both chill. Location is great. TV had a bunch of options. I am pretty minima

The staff was friendly enough. You shouldn't have such high expectations coming here, I think for the price and the convenient location, it's a fair trade, however this is better if you travel alone or if you're younger, athletic because you do have to walk up the stairs every day (no elevator). I came here with my mom and although I have no problem, she did find it a little difficult walking up the older, uneven wood stairs, and she's is still healthy (close to 60yo) There are eataly restaurants/market and the subway station very close by (3 mins walk) so that's a huge plus. I wouldn't mind staying here again if the price is right

Clean, convenient hotel with just the basics; you get what you pay for. No free toiletries. No bathrobes, no slippers, no hair dryers in the bathrooms. The mattress was comfortable, and the room had nice bright lighting. The in-room sink was a plus. I appreciated the common refrigerator, coffee and tea bar, and the ice machine on the first floor. Friendly. helpful staff.

Good spot in a good areas to navigate all five boroughs. The hotel itself was better than I was expecting. It was a really chill vibe. Staff weren’t necessarily friendly but all very efficient which I don’t mind. Room was decent and good tv options and size. Overall very good.

I had a great stay! Great location, great for solo traveller. The only two points are that the aircon unit is super noisy at night, even when it's not on. And I think the room could do with a little chair or more hooks to put away clothes / towels.

it was a good place to stay at for a solid three days and I did enjoy the room granted it was a bit small, but it was commendable, and even though the flight of stairs are a bit of a hassle, but it was definitely worth the stay. and the room was definitely clean, which it was very amazing.

Be warned: no elevator and 5+ floor walkup on aging, tilted stairs. Also, communal bathrooms. So go in with your eyes open. Check in person was blase, couldn't really be bothered. They probably have to deal with people complaining about the stairs a lot. There was a bug in the shower, which weirdly had exposed brick. Zero places to out luggage or clothes and super harsh lighting. Interesting art unfortunately done by a local Zionist artist. Location was fantastic, though. Access to a fridge on the ground floor was also a nice perk.

We have this place a try as the prices are so high in Manhattan. It is a little quirky and plain but the bed and room overall were comfortable and reasonable. If you want traditional hotel level of decor you are going to pay more but if you want to save a little money with a perfectly reasonable experience in a great area it’s worth it.

Very good value, no thrills but if you are looking for a clean safe place to stay right in the centre of Manhatten then this is a very good option. Shared bathrooms and showers but clean and new and drinks facilities downstairs. 24 he reception staff very pleasant.

It is def a hostel, not a hotel. Shared bathroom was clean enough although I would not prefer it if NY was not so expensive because of UN. The room was def not comfortable; creaky bed and literally no place to put my belongings. Lots of street noise. No elevator, staircase was creaky and not neat. I knew this, yet struggled a lot with my large suitcase. Don’t stay there.

Dingy sheets, dingy towels, loud street sounds, no rug, squeaky unstable bed (was supposed to be a King but it was a Queen sized bed) and smell of dead mouse in wall, no elevator, no in room amenities, loud hallways and just not a warm, inviting environment. I’ve never been to prison but I’m sure those accommodations are better. A waste of $250. If you want comfort do not stay here. After a hour in the room, I left and didn’t bother to stay overnight because it was such a dismal abode and such a disappointing experience.

Chose because close to conference location and little availability that night. It is akin to a boarding house or student room - probably fine for bargain traveler. Location felt safe, but hotel feels slightly seedy. Room and bathroom were quite spacious. Fine for one quick night with no need to linger in room but would not return unless there were no other good options.

The Flat Hotel is in an excellent location that is very walkable and safe even in the evening. Lots of Food and Bars nearby open late. I selected it for its proximity to Penn Station and Bathhouse Flatiron. The hotel offered a spacious newly renovated room with the comfy bed. Clean modern Bathroom. The property was very clean. Only complaint would be noise from the bar downstairs. Otherwise the staff were great check-in was fast and easy. Yes I would stay again.

Staff: the gentlemen that checked me in is professional. Minimal chatting. The other staffs did not answer to a simple good morning.... It's NYC, so it gets noisy around the area and when house keeping is cleaning. Overall my stay was nice. There were plenty of water, tea, and coffee for guests. The area is walkable and plenty of restaurants around. Not far from Times Square and Penn Station. I would definitely stay again.! Thanks for a cozy stay!

I was told by the staff at night that I would be okay for a 12:00 to 12:30 check out the staff at night was extremely friendly and even responded to my text messages upon my late arrival after I finished work from the election. However I received a message on my unrestricted phone stating that I would be subjected to extra charges if I was not leaving by 11:00 this is not only a professional but illegal as there is no authorization signed for you to remove extra fees at your discretion without a prior agreement please be careful when looking at this property again staff was great at night and I had a decent experience up until the checkout process

Excellent value for what you pay. I didn't know what to think of the shared bathroom experience or the tiny rooms, but I rolled the dice and booked, and it turned out both were terrific accommodations for the price. Other guests were respectful of bathroom timing and cleanliness, and the room, though cramped, made an adequate and quiet "home base" to come back to after a long day in the city. Staff was helpful and open, and the street the hotel is on is low foot traffic and relatively peaceful. A great place to rest your head.

The Flat is worth considering if you're looking for lodging in Manhattan that's (for the most part) a notch less expensive than most others. The staff was pleasant, easygoing, and professional. I stayed in a bunk + private bathroom, which was clean with nothing to complain about. I do think it's fair to advise potential guests on the following: while on a relatively quiet part of the street, the building itself does produce loud noises. The HVAC/plumbing jolted me awake about every half hour. It wasn't too bad in my case because I didn't really need to be well-rested. But someone else, who's a light sleeper and does need the rest, might be distressed by this. And don't forget that there's no elevator (which isn't a criticism of the property - I think some travelers might overlook it in the description).

This is a great place to stay if you're looking for a cheaper option in the Manhatten area. The rooms are very small compared to normal hotel rooms but if all you need is a bed and sink, it's no problem. They provide free coffee/tea to guests and even let us check-in early because our room was available. No elevators which may be an issue to some but younger couples and families shouldn't have too many issues. Overall a great experience and would come back.

There are no elevators but they make it very clear so no one should rate it lower because of not having elevators. Also, bathrooms are shared but I never had to wait and it was super clean. So these are the only two drawbacks if they are must haves then don´t consider. But otherwise, knowing these it is a five star for cost benefit. Will stay again!

Totally fine. Excellent location in manhattan. Free water and coffee makes all the difference and prob saved $15 a day. I was on the fifth floor and had no issues whatsoever. Even in a high end hotel in the city you’d probably want earplugs if you’re on the fifth floor so this place is no different. Would definitely return.
- 5/5
I loved how clean and safe this hotel is. Beds are comfortable, modern looking furniture, hallways smell nice. Bathrooms are shared but they were available and clean every time i needed to use one. Also, there are sinks in rooms. The hotel has very convenient location, close to a lot of restaurants and shops. I would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
Loved the decor! Wish there was an elevator but I also understand that it's a super old building! Overall great experience.

Great stay. The only issue I had was the road noise. I would recommend white noise at night.
- 5/5
From beginning to end the staff was amazing. Shared bathrooms were always clean. Rooms were small, but hey, its NY your not supposed to stay in your room except to sleep. Had everything I needed. Loved the fact they always had cold bottles water and coffee wheneever you needed it.If I come back to NY I will definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Room and shared bathrooms are clean, free tea and coffee, great location.
- 5/5
My 20yo daughter stayed here for 4 nights on her own. Loved being so close to subway and walking distance to NY things. Thought her little room was the BEST. Loved it! Had a sink and mirror so she could get ready for her dance events. Did not have any issue with the shared bathroom. Amazing price for Manhattan. If she goes again, she will stay here again for sure.
- 5/5
Big space in a room and super clean, but just noisy a bit.
- 5/5
Love the Flat! Second time there. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Great place and clean. No elevator but that was expected. Great overall stay
- 5/5
Super friendly staff. Liked that they stored my luggage on my last day. Suggest that they put a small chair in the room and a paper towel dispenser in the shared bathroom.
- 4/5
Fabulous stay…legit NY hotel-stylish, clean, comfortable bed and linens. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Minimalist on amenities but definitely will be back.
- 4/5
Much better than expected. The walls were extremely thin, and I could hear our loud neighbors late at night. Other than that, I have no major complaints. Worth what I paid for sure and would stay again.
- 5/5
Exactly what I needed!
- 1/5
Ending up leaving. This is more like a Hostel. Shared bathroom. No elevator. Stairs narrow and tilted to the side. Room the bed basically fit and that's it. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else nearby like the Motto by Hilton which ended up being the same price. Shame on me for not looking into the hotel more instead of going off pictures on Hotels.com.
- 5/5

- 4/5
Some rooms do not have a private bathroom and parking isn't available.
- 1/5
Service was poor; they weren't smiling or being helpful in any way.
- 4/5
The negatives: noise is one, which I don’t blame them for. They can’t control the noise levels outside. However, there was a window a/c unit and it seemed that some noise (and cold air) was coming in through it and the space around it. The other negative is the bed. It isn’t the most comfortable, but isn’t the worst either. If you’re just looking for somewhere to lay your head after a long day in the city, it gets the job done. I would definitely stay again.
- 3/5
The property had a lot of stairs, a shared washroom, and didn't have housekeeping service. So my room was never cleaned while I was there.
- 5/5
Enjoyed it! Will stay again next month!
- 3/5
Budget option. Very small rooms and loud from the outside. You can hear everybody. Showers are alright but wear shower shoes if you don't have a private shower.
- 3/5
Bring shower shoes.
- 5/5
Great for a short trip and I have no issues climbing stairs
- 5/5
Everything was great! Just wish they gave you more face towels, just received one every time they cleaned and had to ask every time , but other than that great hotel!
- 3/5
Super accesible area for new york city. Everything is close , only downside is that they need to update furniture the bed in my room was horrible to sleep on but I was out in the city most time and only came back for sleepng so it didnt matter. Overall goood affordable option

The listing disnt match wharlt i received when i got to check in. The beds are terrible. The steps going to the upper floor are uneven and very hard to maneuver.
- 5/5
Absolutely amazing
- 4/5
Only negative was the noise from the bar next door. We came back early one night as we were very jet lagged and wanted to sleep, but it was like trying to sleep in a back office in a club. So loud! (The guy on reception did give us ear plugs though).
- 4/5
Overall experience was good and I recommend staying here. The room was quite cold, but if you bring warm clothes it shouldn’t be an issue. Cleanliness was good, though they could have done a better job vacuuming. Very good location and altogether an enjoyable stay.
- 5/5
exactly what we needed for our 6 day stay, very convenient location and staff was very friendly

This location was ideal, to attractions within walking distance, subway, train etc. The staff were accommodating and friendly. The cleanliness was great. They stored my luggage prior to checking in and out. It was everything I needed for my stay and plans in NYC. Thank you.😁

I requested the refund for 2 days and I never received any response. I just used one day January 9 and I definitely didn’t like that place
- 4/5
This is a great option if you’re on a budget and don’t require any additional accommodations and are low maintenance. Staff were friendly and answered all my questions accurately. The room was very clean, as were the shared bathrooms. My mattress was terrible however. But for the location at that price, you’ll need to be ok with a concession or two.
- 5/5
Always a great place to stay. Super friendly front desk staff, lovely coffee/tea station in the morning. Clean comfortable and safe.
- 5/5
This is a small boutique hotel which is beautifully decorated. It’s located in a very old building with no elevator so don’t book a room there if you have mobility issues. It’s close to several subway stations and there are several good coffee shops in the area. I will definitely be staying here again!
