Reviews
The Algonquin Hotel receives mixed reviews, with guests appreciating its historic charm, excellent location, and friendly staff. However, there are consistent complaints about the small room size, high prices, and recent renovations that have diminished the hotel's unique character.
- Historic charm and literary heritage
- Excellent location in the heart of New York City
- Small room size
- High prices for food and services

It was an atmospheric and historic hotel, though we felt that recent modernisation may have impaired some of the celebrated 1920s atmosphere. Though some effort had been made to retain/recreate the 'New Yorker' period, we felt that more of the original could have been retained.

Great location, beautiful historic building & nice upgrades Inconsistent AC that needed 2 emergency repairs. Seems to still be working the bugs out of new remodeling. Exorbitant bar prices & breakfast.

The door to my room didn’t close automatically. When room service came, they left my door cracked open with my belongings inside and also left a mop in the corner.

Under renovation. Elevator - filthy. Room was exceptionally small. Windows were glazed over, no view at all of anything. Simple breakfast of 2 croissants, coffee, tea, fruit and yoghurt was $75.00 - ridiculous. Lacking in the atmosphere I experienced on previous visits. Location remains great. Will go somewhere else next visit.

Great location. Lovely staff, very friendly and helpful, even when circumstances were working against them, they made every effort to accommodate our requests. Very good food in bar and restaurant. Very good gym. It was disappointing on several points. We had a 1 bedroom suite for 3 nights which had very tired decor, broken window blinds, no in-room fridge, antiquated heating/air con system, erratic water temperature for showering, often just lukewarm water. Given that we were paying almost $1000 per night, we really expected a higher level of comfort and amenities from the room. My husband had stayed here often 30 years ago and remembered the hotel fondly for quality and charm. Sadly, he felt the hotel had not moved with the times, despite recent and ongoing refurbishment and the room just felt old and shabby.

The lobby and bar area are gorgeous, and the hotel is in a fantastic location, within an easy walk of the theater district, Times Square, and subway. Our room was clean and decently sized for NYC, but the furnishings looked a little worn. The mattress on the bed sagged terribly and rooms are not well soundproofed. We heard the family next door talking and watching TV until the wee hours.

Our first stay at The Algonquin - and it didn’t disappoint. The room was nice - comfortable but small. Bathroom had a lot of hot water and plenty of towels. A great location for us - we saw one drama on Broadway that was a block north on 45th and another one that was a block south on 43rd.

The room had no refrigerator, no coffee setup, and we had no hot water in the shower later in the day. For a hotel at this price point and reputation, those omissions were surprising. I did enjoy sitting in the lobby bar/restaurant, which is a lovely space. The cappuccino and truffle fries were very good, but I didn’t realize until after tipping and signing the check that an 18%+ gratuity had already been added automatically. My small order ended up costing over $40. Overall, you’re paying for the name and the location more than the experience. If you’re assigned a room on a low floor, especially the second, I recommend requesting a higher one right away.

The location was perfect for our sightseeing plans. It was easy to get a cab at the hotel. There was a $45 food/beverage credit every day. The food was very good at the restaurant. The first room we were given was very small with a bathroom you couldn’t turn around in. We asked to be moved and were accommodated. This room might be ok for a single traveler but not a couple. There is no room service at this hotel.

Historic The property was fine, however we found one member of the staff on duty Sunday morning, 10/19, to be unhelpful and unprofessional as she responded curtly when asked about there being no luggage storage for the day because (apparently) a bellhop had not reported to work that day. She was snippy and uppity and acted as though we shouldn’t even be asking for services. She shouldn’t be in a career of hospitality.

Thanks again to the Algonquin and staff. Also, both gentlemen attending our transportation to and from the hotel did us right too. Our taxis were waiting on us as we stepped out every time. We also had dinner the night we arrived. The missus had the truffle fries and house salad. I had the burger and fries. They were both excellent. Cooked right, served right and attended to dutifully with a smile. To Marriott's credit they did do a classy job of moving the Blue Bar inside the lobby/dining room. Keeping the round table and giving it a hallowed spot in a cove is pretty sweet too. We'll be back, again. Even though Marriott closed the Oak Room, the spirit of the Algonquin is stronger than any corporate makeover. Now, I'm just an old ad guy musing about how a little promotion around the Gonk's place in history could lead to something other than having to make more space for PowerPoint presentations. But I digress...

The food and drinks were extremely expensive and the food repetitive. I was disheartened that the bar shut at 10pm on a few days so after a show we could not relax in the bar to finish the evening off. Annoyingly to us they put a 18% gratuity onto the bill and also a space for additional gratuity, it took away the how happy with the service element, as the service on most days was extremely poor, think it was because we did not add an extra gratuity, personalty I thought a basic beer in a small glass was 10 dollars plus tax and then 18% gratuity was excessive as it made a simple small beer very expensive compared to outside bars/restaurants. Overall a good hotel in a good area close to times square, but overall expensive for what you got, the receptionist when leaving said as we did not use the daily credit they had added it to our account no benefit for us but guess it was for them.

The meals and cocktails and staff were great; true to New York in general, food/beverages were very expensive. The historic nature of the hotel is wonderful, and the menus contain many interesting footnotes about the property! Front desk wanted to charge $1 each for a postcard stamp--this is ridiculous at this level of hotel.
- 4/5
Our king room was expensive but large and well decorated, although the bathroom was very cramped and the shower leaked badly. The springs in the bed squeaked loudly and the mattress was overdue for replacement. We enjoyed the references to the wit of Dorothy Parker and the round table. Overall an enjoyable stay but overpriced.

This historic hotel was on our list of famous places to stay. The staff is amenable and helpful. The food and drinks are delicious. But we were disappointed that the famous Blue Bar had been modernized. Instead of warm and inviting,it is icy and cold. Only the bartender was the same.

The Algonquin has been my favorite hotel in the city for almost 50 years. It has changed to keep up with the times. I miss man of the old charming features, the lobby recalling the days of glory with the Round Table, the waiters in tuxes, the laid back decor. The new Algonquin is still very special. it is very pleasant. The house kitty Matilda is sadly gone, but Hamlet has replaced her. He is a little shy, but makes the rounds of his place. The rooms are a little small but very comfortable. Wonderful place to stay in the city.

For us, the location was perfect -- safe, near many good restaurants and other places we wanted to visit. We love the history of the Algonquin, and even though the hotel has been renovated, they have tried to maintain its importance in New York's literary history. Of course, being in NYC, the room was smaller than I would have liked.
- 4/5
Rooms were small. Not much that can be done, I’m sure. Loved the $45/day credit although didn’t really get to use it and it pales in comparison to cost of a Merlot glass of wine ($24 per glass).

This is a great old hotel. The amenities are up to date though, and the rooms are very comfortable. Unfortunately, our heat wasn’t working. We reported that in the morning as we were checking out and they immediately gave us rewards points as a consolation, and said they would address it right away. We had drinks in the bar area and, while expensive (it is NYC, after all), they were great and service was wonderful. This hotel is also perfectly located for enjoying Broadway and the theaters. Definitely recommend.

Service and hotel was excellent. Food and drinks is very overpriced. For example: a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, hash browns and coffee is $55 per person. A bourbon Manhattan is $30. The hotel charges $40 per room per day which you get back in the form of a food and beverage use-it-or-lose-it credit. This encourages you to eat and drink at the hotel and pay the large food prices.

The Algonquin was just lovely; the staff were very friendly/welcoming and professional. I loved its proximity to subway lines and travel, the street is relatively quiet and kept neat. The Blue Bar has a lovely menu and makes dinner and drinks super easy at the end of the day. I would definitely stay here again. My only sadness is that I did not cross paths with Hamlet.

Had a room whose lock did not work so we had to transfer to another but then they put use back in that room when the lock was fixed. Gave us breakfast credit for inconvenience. Close to Broadway shows.

It was an absolute pleasure to stay at the Algonquin hotel. The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous, the food is excellent (honestly one of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted) and the staff were friendly, courteous And extremely helpful. The manager on duty when I arrived went above and beyond. I will be staying there again!

Old school charm and elegance wraps around you the moment you enter. The full time bartender during the week is as top shelf as the cocktails. Quintessential New York City!

I am super disappointed with this hotel. It's history and its allure is the reason I stayed here. The fact that I was not informed that the blue room, the bar, and the original restaurant were closed, is unacceptable. The new hotel bar and restaurant is so typical and bland, lacking any character was sad. Both were so brightly lit I certainly would not want to linger. And the fact employees seemed to have no knowledge of its history was shocking. I stayed here in 2014 and it was fantastic . It’s no a corporate shadow of what it used to be. So sad. I will not stay here again, nor will I recommend it to anyone. Talk about ruining a landmark.

Lobby and bar have an old time classic ambiance. Room was nice and clean. AC was powerful. The breakfast items are very expensive.

It was a great location, but the bathroom could have been a little cleaner and since its such an old hotel, prepare for a very tiny room. Great staff though!

The current management has cheapened everything about this hotel that used to be excellent. It is nowhere near excellent any more. The former decor of exquisite quality has been destroyed with a cheap paint-over; the lobby ambience has been destroyed by a gaudy, noisy bar and ugly light fixtures and ugly furniture; the food is not always fresh, so the quality of food overall is cheap. However, all of the prices are sky-high. I don't mind paying for good quality, but when the quality goes wayyyyy down and the prices go wayyy up, that tells me that I should never stay at this hotel ever again.

Hotel room was large and comfortable, but apparently lacked rooms with grab bars near toilet. The large room size was great, especially for New York. Hotel conveniently located near theaters and taxis. Food was okay but not great and rather overpriced. Staff was kind and friendly and very efficient and helpful, especially in the restaurant. I would recommend for friends

I was looking forward to a little history by staying at the Algonquin. What I got instead was just plain old. The rooms were painfully small, the furnature early depression, and the bathroom (although upgraded) was the size of a postage stamp.

The hotel is a bit dated; however, it is 100 years old and still in excellent condition, so that's amazing. he rooms are a little small but that doesn't matter if you are going to be out and about. The staff and services were beautiful. The food is expensive; however, you get a $30 voucher each day, which is excellent, and the food drinks were also excellent. We even saw the famous cat; he's just as welcoming and happy as everyone else. I would recommend it and come back. They put a charge/hold on your card and at checkout they deduct from what you purchased in their restaurant downstairs.

We were expecting the “old” Algonquin—the one with the cozy bar and history. The renovation destroyed all that. The hotel lobby/bar area are just like so many other modern hotel entry areas, which we found very disappointing. So there was nothing “wrong,” per se, with the hotel, the experience was not the unique one we were hoping for from an Autograph collection hotel.

Hotel adds $30 a day to your bill basically to coerce you to using their Bar/Restaurant which is expensive and limited. Maid forgot to leave us bath towels. Beds are uncomfortable. Space in the bathroom for items that you need is extremely limited. Overall location good, hotel unimpressive.

A bonus is the traditional “hotel cat” Hamlet who made a few appearances during our stay. Hotel is conveniently located near Theater District, Times Square & Bryant Park. Room was good sized & comfortable in every way.

I even got to meet our favorite orange boi, Hamlet - a highlight of the trip. If you're coming from non-city parts of the U.S. you'll think the rooms are small, but I found them bigger than other NYC hotels...which is actually surprising considering the age of this one. The location is fantastic, within walking distance to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the UN, Bryant Park, shopping on 5th avenue and Central Park. Most of the main subway lines go through Times Square so it's easy to get to anywhere in Manhattan. While centrally located, this particular block of 44th is a bit quieter than places closer to 7th and Broadway. But, again, if you're coming from non-city locales you'll probably find it noisier than you're used to. If you end up with a room facing the street you might need ear plugs or a white noise machine. Things quiet down from about 12 AM - 7 AM, but otherwise it's a pretty steady stream of people yelling, horns honking, and, early morning garbage and delivery trucks. Overall I really enjoyed my business/leisure trip and will be back again.

Small room but that's to be expected in a historic hotel. Perfect location. Food meh tho waiters sweet and efficient. Free expresso machine available 24 hrs a day. Loved Hamlet, the orange tabby cat, that hangs out at reception. He clearly loves it there. Main objections: SLOW to check in/out, and their "destination fee" of $30/day (applied to food/drink IN the hotel) would be considered an illegal "junk fee" in California.
- 4/5
Very nice hotel. It has a great lobby/lounge. The staff was very nice, and especially enjoyed the house cat. Drawbacks - small room and no coffee machine in the room.
- 3/5
Uncomfortable beds, small rooms, unfriendly staff (dining and reception), loud noise from street is easily heard in the room and prevented us from sleeping.
- 5/5
The Algonquin is my Go To place for anything Broadway! The storied history, architecture, the room rate value! The basic Queen rooms are a bit small, but for NYC they’re a good size. For changing and sleeping on a weekend stay, they’re fine. For a longer stay, I go with a King room. The bar lounge is wonderful, and if you can, reserve the iconic Roundtable for dinner!
- 4/5
Overall very good. The rooms were cozy, quiet and comfortable. The staff is courteous, friendly and helpful. The Italian coffee machine near the lobby is available 24/7 and makes great coffee. Since we were in a suite I would have liked a dorm sized refrigerator and glass water glasses. There was only an ice bucket and paper cups.

Enjoyed meeting friends in the lobby. Food and service was excellent. Enjoyed schmoozing with Hamlet. The 24 hour coffee and tea bar was nice also the Evian in my room.
- 4/5
The lobby and location are great but our room was small with a broken light and peeling wallpaper in the bathroom. The staff were awesome and helpful. We enjoyed the history of the place.

Hotel was lovely, clean and comfortable. Staff was great too. Location was very convenient and a great breakfast diner was right next door. Things I didn't like were the overpriced drinks at the lobby bar (bartender was great though!) and the very squeaky bed (although it was comfortable). I would stay here again for sure!

Did not like: 1. The rooms were really small, even by NYC standards. The bathroom in particular was very cramped. 2. Much of the paintwork throughout the hotel was chipped and worn. 3. The recent renovations to the lobby area have eliminated much of charm and history of the hotel, which is arguably the major reason for staying in the Algonquin. 4. The executive cat, "Hamlet", the other major reason for staying at the Algonquin, failed to make an appearance for almost the entirety of our stay. Whether this was due to advancing age or some sort of feline job action, I don't know, but it was very disappointing.
