Reviews
The hotel is praised for its convenient location near Times Square and friendly staff. However, guests frequently complain about small room sizes, inconsistent water temperature, and various maintenance issues.

The hotel was good. Lighting is definitely an issue in the rooms.very dark but it’s in a great location to see everything. Staff were very helpful.

I was traveling with students with 4 total rooms. When i called to confirm our stay the day before I was told by the person who answered that that the hotel was closed as of the previous afternoon. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY PRIOR NOTIFICATION FROM EITHER THE HOTEL OR EXPEDIA. After more than 90 minutes Expedia was able to rebook the rooms in a hotel that was in a good location, but was not as noce as was indicated in the previous booking or the second booking website

Loved it! Quiet, clean and affordable

What was even more unsettling was that a tall man in a black suit who I have never seen before, knocked on my hotel door minutes after I went down to the lobby to ask about my deadbolt "assure me that he is watching the floor". During my conversation with staff at the lobby, they found out that the e-mail I had written down on file during my check-in was also entered into the system incorrectly. Even after the staff corrected the e-mail telling me that they would investigate, I have no follow up on the incident by any staff or hotel e-mails. Personally, I wouldn't bothering helping out either but any contact would have been nice. Great experience overall. Take nothing from my experience, except the fact that I do think it's a great hotel with friendly service. Be vigilant of your surroundings so that you and your belongings don't go missing. If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep this is it.

Overall the property was great except that it was very loud all the time and the walls are thin
- 3/5
Staff was excellent and accommodating. Property needs updating.
- 1/5
Unclean rooms, leaky washroom/shower, smelly carpet. Friendly engineers/cleaners but other staff rude.
- 4/5
I enjoyed my stay at Square Hotel, Only thing missing was a Fridge to keep my food from spoiling. Other then that Staff was very helpful during my stay. Thank you!
- 5/5
Ideal location for a stay in New York. Friendly staff, clean hotel.
- 5/5
For the price, you won’t find better than this place. Finally, the rooms were bigger than we expected. We have been coming to the city for years and have seen smaller rooms.

Room was small but comfortable and adequate for our purposes. The location was perfect, as we were in NYC to see Wicked, which is playing at the Gershwin, right across the street from the hotel. The only issue we encountered was that the cleaning staff attempted to open the door while we were sleeping.
- 3/5
Staff is friendly during check in. The place itself is pretty shabby. The room is small and the air condition smell moldy. It was around 50 degrees outside but it still felt warm inside because they have the ac setting locked. It works for 2 seconds then stops. It felt stuffy.
- 5/5
Good central location
- 5/5
Needed to stay overnight for work. Good location, quiet on weeknights. Small but has everything I needed for one night.
- 5/5
Amazing Service
- 5/5
We stayed 2 nights and the hotel was clean. The room was a little small, but its New York. Every time we walked in someone greeted us and made sure we had water to drink when we left out. Dahlia was AMAZING!!!!! I would stay again due to her outstanding customer service. Look its not a large, or foir seasons hotel so do not expect that, but Dahlia makes up for it with her smile and how accommodating she was. I like smaller hotels and staying in a hotel woth 20 or evn 40 floors is a no for me, but if you want a nice boutique hotel that is clean, this is it!
- 4/5
Very close to everything! Staff is super nice and accommodating. Jalepeno martini at the bar is amazing!
- 4/5
Liked the Coffee at reception in morning
- 5/5
Very cute
- 4/5
I liked how close to Broadway it was, and a parking garage located so close. I didn't like that they didn't have accommodations for the stay. Breakfast, forks, straws, napkins... Etc.
- 3/5
The location is excellent for shopping, within walking distance of the various theaters and the subway is at the corner. The staff is pleasant and helpful. On the negative side, there is a lot of street noise and bright lights because of the theater on the opposite side of the street, the desk chair is too big for the size of room, there are not enough pillows for the size of the bed, and a small refrigerator would be nice. Also, the cable options are very limited with no News channel available.
- 5/5
The hotel is very near to times square. It is quiet and the personnel were friendly and helpful.
- 2/5
Great location. Very nice decor. The room for the price just like all NYC hotel rooms was shockingly small. But there was no bathrobe like the description suggested, no table to sit at, no cups or ice bucket, however someone from the desk did bring us cups and ice. There was free water you could ask for more at the desk throughout your stay. The bed was super uncomfortable. I should have asked for more pillows. They become like squished little pancakes and it was top five worst nights of sleep. There are no blackout curtains and the streetlight comes though pretty strongly. The Venetian blinds were missing pieces in a couple so that made it even worse trying to sleep with all the light coming through. Even with the great location I still would not stay here again. Sleep is necessary.
- 5/5
Enjoyed our stay and would stay again. Great staff! Clean and cozy room!
- 3/5
Not bad for a budget hotel. Don’t expect anything glamorous. There was mold growing in the bathroom, the wallpaper was peeling from the walls and there was a weird stain on the bed sheets. Very close to downtown, but poor signage for the actual hotel. Our shuttle couldn’t find it when dropping us off
- 4/5
Great location and a good price. Very convenient
- 5/5
It is a narrow room but very comfortable. The water pressure in the shower was great. The AC unit was effective, and the lighting was unique. Love the style and the color theme - sleek, contemporary, stylish but also comforting.
- 2/5
Really small rooms, outdated air conditioning and old beds.
- 5/5
When we came in from having a tough day the reception just made us so comfortable. She was so helpful with all the questions we had for the next day . We stood here cuz of a cruise we had the next day to take at the port . Very nice area just perfect . Here is the place . You do not need to leave you got if all . I was afraid thinking was going to be ghetto , nope !!!!! Not at all . I would come back for sure .
- 3/5
Clean and well-located. The bed was hard and the room smelt of cheap air freshener.
- 4/5
Good Location and price.
- 3/5
The hotel was in the midst of being acquired by another owner and the phones still had the previous mention of the last hotel name. We had to keep calling the front desk as we had no hot water every night. I think they turned off the boiler to save cost or something as everyone we called them, we suddenly had hot water available. Room was very small and hardly can fit with 2 medium sized luggages. Public parking was right next door but comes with heavy price tag. Other than that, the location was right in the middle of the action, just near 50 th St subway station and walking distance to Winter Garden theatre and Broadway/Times Square.
- 5/5
Good value, friendly staff, excellent location.
- 5/5
Very nice staff
- 3/5
The rooms and bathroom are very small. The water changes between hot and very cold during your shower. Location was good. Staff nice.
- 3/5
Lights and fan not working in bathroom. Small
- 1/5
After the first night we called Expedia to see if we could get atleast a partial refund but the hotel did not want to. The staff was pretty rude except for a few people. We couldn’t take it after the second night the rooms just felt eh with the wet carpet non cleanliness that we decided to just take the loss and get another hotel. We moved hotels to the CitizenM which was awesome I’d totally recommend that hotel over the square and they’re right next to each other.
- 1/5
Location is good. Close to subway. Staff was nice. Re: small room. I’ve been to NYC 5-6 times & always stay in Manhattan/theater district. This is by far the smallest room of any I have stayed at.
- 4/5
Had some trouble with heating and cooling in the room Would be great if rooms had coffee
- 5/5
Very clean and modern room. Only bad thing about the room was the view out the window. But that was no problem as not much time was spent there anyway. Highly recommend this place. Awesome location.
- 5/5
Outstanding
- 4/5
No fans in bathroom, scalding hot water, hand rails on staircase loose. Staff very friendly, less than 10 min walk to multiple great locations.
- 5/5
Would definitely recommend this place and will stay again!
- 3/5
The phone didn’t work, I reported it to the from desk and they didn’t fixed. The ceiling plaster fell and it was licking.
- 5/5
Great location. Easy check in and out. Parking garage is across the street from hotel. The garage next to hotel charges $70 but super easy, in and out.
- 4/5
Be Honest I would expect a little more for the area, the hotel need care some details in the room, and maybe more breakfast area available
- 4/5
I chose this hotel because it was near all of the theaters and museums that we were going to and we were able to walk everywhere. The place is dated, the building is old, and the room was small. The coffee table took up the walk space in the living room and we kept hitting our legs on the platform bed. We asked to order ice in the lobby and they said to call housekeeping from the room; however, the phone didn't work! We asked for a fridge and the plug did not fit through the opening in the cabinet so we had to keep the door open. The outlet in the bathroom didn't work so we had to use the hairdryer in the room. There was construction going on right next door so it was noisy from very early in the morning. We parked across the street and I was able to use a coupon from Park Whiz. The heat was generated by a radiator and it was either blasting hot or chilly since we did not have control over the heat. One morning I had to wait for a few minutes for hot water. There was a "resort fee" because they gave us bottled water and to cover the cost of housekeeping. This place is NOT a resort! All of that said, the staff was friendly and the location was convenient so it suited our purposes. But it was not the lap of luxury.
- 3/5
The hotel was a great price for a very convenient location for our trip.We went to see "Wicked" and the Hotel was right across the street. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was a disappointment, not because it was dirty or anything but it was very tiny. I kept knocking my shins on the bed as I tried to get around the room. If I had realized the room was so small I may have gotten a queen room instead of a King. For the one night we were staying, the room was perfect. If you're planning more than one night, I would recommend finding a larger space to stay.
- 5/5
Nice area. Close to everything. Nice room. Small but perfect and clean.
- 4/5
Staff was polite, hotel was clean. However, the rooms were small, the decor matches the pictures they show but the room is nowhere near the size depicted
- 2/5
Needs a make over. Glad we didn’t need for more than one night slept with clothes on. Bathrooms was old and nasty
- 5/5
Great stay in a great location!
- 5/5
Although I am not a big Times Square visitor, it is VERY convenient to the area. I like the location as it is near to many areas at once, Columbus Circle, Central Park, Carnegie Hall...walkable and plenty of deli and restaurant options.
- 5/5
Friendly
- 3/5
The room was small but nice. The ac ran while the heat also ran which was very odd and at time made the air quality uncomfortable. They only put 1 wash cloth. The phone did not work so we had to go downstairs whenever we needed anything. The water in bathroom would not run a couple of times for periods of 5-10 minutes. Staff was friendly well the hotel staff. Attached restaurant staff were rude but overall 5-10 location was great, discounted parking was nice! Probably won’t return but it was definitely not our best stay in nyc
- 4/5
A belated honeymoon, we really thought the room was nice, but the end of the bed was problematic for our shins because the room did not have the space for that kind of base. It would also be good for them to check the status of the floors below the heaters in the rooms. Ours was a little damaged looking. Overall we really enjoyed ourselves and the staff was amazing. We would absolutely stay here again for the friendliness and comfort alone. Thank you for such a welcoming stay!
- 3/5
Room was suuper small, stains on the blinds too. Shower faucet was very loose and soap rack was hanging
- 5/5
Shawn was so kind and helpful. Very good location. Very clean and quiet.
- 5/5
Very friendly staff, easy check in/check out process
- 5/5
The staff were very friendly! Always greeting us when we came back for the day. Talking to us about our day. Very polite and friendly. We definitely would stay here again!
- 5/5
Great location!
- 3/5
The top was hot and not temp controlled. Told us to put air conditioning on to balance it out. The beds were horrible. Too soft. Requested more washcloths that never arrived
- 4/5
The initial room I was given was tiny and extremely hot with a radiator right at the head of the bed. I asked to be move and was given an upgrade to a much better room with a very comfortable temperature.
- 5/5
Extremely friendly check-in person! Took me no time to check into my room. Super convenient location - close to bus terminal, Times Square, etc. The room is great for a budget hotel like this one - the only thing that could be improved is temp control in the room, and temp of water in the shower (couldn’t quite get them hot) - but for one night this was perfect.
- 2/5
Old, no hot water for showering. Dirty room. Found chocolate under the bed.
- 5/5
My experience overall was good. The staff was helpful and friendly. My room was clean and the decor was nice. The A/C unit however even at 90 degrees was only modestly warm.
- 4/5
Squeaky clean, great location
- 1/5
Room too small and dirty
- 1/5
The staff was friendly and courteous. The room was clean, but the ac was on the heat didnt work and made loud banging noises all night not allowing us to sleep we kept jumping everytime it would make the noises. Its winter in NY idk why the ac was on or even know why the ac is still in the window when the room is like an ice cube.
- 1/5
No Hot water/ it was warm and then went cold The heater stayed on the whole time and it was too hot so we had to turn on the AC I tripped on unseen black bed frame very narrow area
- 5/5
Great place for theatre people to stay in town for shows!
- 4/5
It’s a very good hotel for holiday. Located in the heart of the City. The staff is very helpful.
- 3/5
Property was in a great location, hot water was an issue and fluctuated during the stay. The ceiling light also leaked with water during the night, overall the property was in disappointing condition considering the 3 star status.
- 1/5
Housekeeping was on point always kept the room clean, but really disappointing as far noise , windows are not noise proof and also climate on the room was a struggle, was cold at first then really hot couldn’t never control it.. Price was reasonable for been next to the time square. Staff was great.
- 2/5
very disappoited with this place. cramped, the bed was worn and lumpy, there was no cup in the bathroom and the heater rattled at times during the night. we will never stay here again
- 3/5
The bed was horrible You could not control the temperature on the old radiator. The room was uncomfortably hot so you had to run the window a/c unit to regulate the temperature.
- 5/5
Great stay! Staff was very friendly and attentive!
- 2/5
The bed was horrible, definitely work out and flat. The shower wasn’t draining properly, so you would have to turn it off during the shower to let it drain. Overall the room was dirty and very noisy.
- 5/5
Excelent location!
- 5/5
pleasant staff
- 5/5
How close it was to the city and how nice everyone was
- 3/5
Great location for what I was travelling into the city for. Room was extremely small (but, NYC, so understandable). Heat wasn’t working first night but maintenance fixed that with a quick call to front desk. Toilet was running the entire duration of our stay and we front the street so it was extremely noisy and we didn’t get much rest at all. Toiletries were not replenished the next day. Didn’t always get an answer when calling down to front desk for assistance. The room served its purpose for this trip - but I don’t think we got our moneys worth (especially with the lack of sleep bc of noise and the Canadian exchange!) and would probably stay elsewhere next time we come in.
- 5/5
The staff was excellent! So friendly and made our experience wonderful. Great location.
- 3/5
Bathroom fittings weren’t attached to wall properly. Headboard was peeling and falling to bits. Couldn’t control heating in room as radiator was broke Carpet was either not hoovered or the hoover didn’t work. Ideal location for Times Square. Had superior king room which was ok for size. $2000 for 5 nights is quite steep for a room of that quality
- 5/5
Great Service!
- 1/5
I do not usually answer surveys and am not one to generally complain. If you do not do anything about the condition of the Hotel i honestly do not see how you will remain in business. All of the things listed above - basically all of the Core Amenities did not work or just did not exist. I did not get what I paid for at any level. At $400 a night I would expect at least a clean room with the Amenities advertised. I would also expect if you knew you could not provide the service you advertise you would financially compensate your guest for the inconvenience. Without being asked, recognizing your had an issue(s). I think a $600 credit to my account would be at least fair for the poor experience.
- 1/5
The ceiling was leaking down over the toilet was one the bad things and the counter guy said he would work on getting a partial refund through hotels .com I won’t be holding my breath for the refund
- 3/5
Good location, but rooms were really small and seemed a bit on the dirtier side
- 5/5
The staff was excellent the location is great
- 2/5
Customer service was good room was ok just, carpet wasn't vacuum.
- 4/5
Nice property
- 5/5
Excellent location, staff was very friendly and helpful, highly recommended
- 1/5
This hotel was awful. I asked for a full refund to check out the morning after I arrived. The room I was given was small, no natural light and so hot you could not turn the heating off. I could go on and on but I have lost the will to live.
- 5/5
Perfect location next to everything in New York. Clean rooms and great service
- 5/5
The staff was AMAZING. The property was great. Our only feedback is our room had a quirk where the hot water takes awhile to turn on and has to be on C instead of H. Just maybe include that with the check in information. Our first night we were too tired to seek help and showered in ice water.
- 5/5
The front staff was so friendly during check-in & check out. I was given an upgrade related to it was my birthday the day of check-in.
- 1/5
The ONLY thing good I can say about this property is the proximity to Broadway theaters. The place is a pit. Peeling headboards, barely enough room to walk in the room. The water was turned off without any warning. We requested clean towels repeatedly. We also had to request toilet paper! The elevator was out of order more often than not. STAY AWAY!
- 4/5
Priscilla at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. Thank you!
- 5/5
This hotel is great with a fantastic location. The staff is exceptional.
