Reviews
The hotel is praised for its excellent location near Times Square and Broadway, with easy access to public transportation and local attractions. Guests appreciate the friendly and helpful staff. However, some guests express dissatisfaction with the hotel's condition, citing outdated facilities and a need for renovation. Noise and lack of amenities in the rooms are also mentioned as drawbacks.

This was the perfect room for us...for as much as we needed a room during our time in NYC. We basically just used it for sleeping and showering, along with occasional bathroom breaks. It was pretty basic, but very clean and we were happy with the staff. They also stored our bags after checkout and before we had to leave for the airport. It was a very handy feature and saved us from having to pay for the service elsewhere. I will definitely look at booking a room there again for my future trips to NYC.
- 5/5
Great location, just a few steps from Times Square. Staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean, beds were comfortable. Perfect for those visiting NYC and don't plan to spend a lot of time in your room.
- 3/5
Great location. Older hotel. Window air conditioning loud. Bed uncomfortable
- 5/5
Great location, perfect choice if you want to be near Times Square
- 5/5
Absolutely did the job for us. We weren't really in the room much as spent a few days touring the city. Great location near Times Square, and no issues. Was clean to a decent standard and average facilities, but exactly what you want when you only need a base and somewhere to rest your head.
- 4/5
Price was on par. We stayed on the third floor. You could hear some street noise at night bring an extra pair of earplugs. The rooms were clean, but felt like a landlord special. We stayed three nights and would stay here again.
- 5/5
A no frills hotel located next to Times Square/ Bryant Park area. The room was clean but very basic but close to everything. The staff were friendly and the overall hotel was nice and well maintained.
- 5/5
Close to everything important! Bryan Park, Central Park and 42st time Square.
- 3/5
Older building with Bair bone basics room was clean however water didn’t work in the bathroom. Maintenance supervisor was extremely apologetic and fixed. It beds were super uncomfortable. One elevator good for a quick trip with no frills great location Midtown close to everything walkable location.
- 5/5
Very affordable in a great location for exploring Manhattan
- 4/5
The only issue I had was with my shower but I was happy enough with a bath. Close to T.S. and theatres, and only a couple of streets from Bryant Park. Close to plenty bars & eateries and there's a coffee shop/food shop right next door. Also a Carnegies Diner around the corner on 6th too for breakfast. I would and will stay here again on future trips. Thanks
- 5/5
Helpful staff, clean room and common areas great location for the price
- 3/5
On the plus side : a few feet from Time Square. On the down side : to close to Time Square (very noisy at night).
- 3/5
We enjoyed the location but the experience wasn’t otherwise memorable.
- 4/5
Nice hotel. Location was great.
- 4/5
Location Is a bit dated and slightly over priced but location is good
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
This was a great hotel. The location was close to everything. The staff was so helpful, the room was spacious and quiet. The property was well maintained…,clean, beautiful lobby, never had to wait long for the two elevators. They were so good about storing our bags compared to other hotels we’ve stayed in the theatre district. Highly recommend this place. You won’t be disappointed.
- 5/5
Right at Time Square. Three blocks from Bryant Park. Cook eatery right next door. Close to several subway lines. Doesn't get much better!
- 5/5
Good spot near Times Squar3
- 5/5
Fabulous room and the hotel staff was able to accommodate us with a medical fridge. Had trouble with the t v not keeping reception and going black and construction repairs, starting eight thirty nine o'clock were a little bit off, but otherwise the stay was fabulous.
- 4/5
My only suggestion, or hope, is for the Hotel to consider having a locked area for luggage, if they are going to provide services for customers to hold luggage either before check-in or after checkout. Although everything was safe and our bags were missing nothing, it’s just a sense of security for the customer to know the baggage is safe and they are able to explore the city knowing that everything is secure and without needing to lug things around with them.
- 5/5
Perfect location. Exceptionally clean and rooms are large. The Hotel St James is now our home away from home when visiting NYC.
- 5/5
Older hotel, not fancy but clean, helpful staff and best of all, location, location, location. Close to theatre district, good places to eat and time square. Rarely walked a mile or more to any of our destinations (we were on a theatre trip). Price was way lower than most hotels in the area. Would stay here again.
- 5/5
Love it
- 5/5
Even is not the best hotel the staff and the position is making this small hotel a five stars. Every time that we asked for help they were fully supportive. Position is top, and is compensating all possible issues.
- 5/5
The property was very clean and rooms were very roomy
- 4/5
The room was small, but well-maintained and very near Times Square. Be sure to ask for a room not on the street side, because the street side is very noisy in the night.
- 4/5
The room was perfect for what we needed, one night in New York. Great location. Rooms are a bit dated but good size and clean. Air con is very dated and noisy but does the job.
- 5/5
- 5/5
Great a/c! Very affable staff!
- 5/5
Nice quiet play. Near everything. Staff very helpful.
- 5/5
Loved the location!
- 5/5
Great location for Broadway
- 4/5
Great location, very helpful and friendly staff. Old hotel, but updates were being done. Perfect for a few days stay
- 4/5
Bathroom shower arrangement was poorly designed. Couldn’t keep water from getting much of the floor wet 🙁
- 5/5
All good!
- 5/5
It's my second time staying here. I stayedfor 4 days. Arrived early and staff were very accommodating for an early checkin. The room was spacious enough since it was only needed for some hours of sleep and clothe changing. The location is perfect....walking distance to broadway shows, restaurants and time square. The building I just loved; it's a beautiful structure built in 1901. Would definitely stay here whenever I visit again.
- 5/5
Loved the fact our room was made after a long day walking in NYC with fresh towels. Excellent service
- 3/5
It is in a great location on 45 th between 6th and 7th. Staff was nice. It is just very basic. Very small room, not decorated. We only spent one night and it was fine, met our purpose.
- 5/5
Great location!
- 4/5
Great location- bathroom was a little small and beds were a little too firm.
- 5/5
Everything about this hotel is amazing. Just at the heart of time square.
- 5/5
Tucked into the theatre district, St. James is a lovely home base. The location couldn't be better--close to theatres, shopping, and restaurants. Like most NYC hotels, the rooms/hallways are not spacious--but it's not cramped. The building is at least 100 years old, but well maintained. The downstairs library area is a comfortable space to wait for rides or meet up. The staff is exceptionally helpful and kind.
- 5/5
I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights and it was great. Old style and very cozy. Just minutes away to Times Square and Bryant Park. Staff was super friendly and helpful, room was very clean. Do keep in mind it is a small room with no mini fridge, coffee machine, or microwave. Which is perfectly fine if your plan is to be out and about all day.
- 5/5
.
- 4/5
Nothing bad to write and nothing great to write. It was a room to sleep in for a quick weekend trip. No bells or whistles but not horrible either.
- 5/5
Great location and well maintained. Good size rooms, clean washrooms and comfortable beds.
- 1.5/5
Location Rooms felt sterile, more like a hostel.
- 5/5
Room was cleaned to an excellent standard everyday by Rosa.the room was very modern
- 5/5
Lovely
- 5/5
Location was very convenient for theater shows.
- 4/5
The hotel was lovely. The staff was great.
- 3/5
air condition
- 5/5
Would stay again. Comfortable, convenient, clean and quiet. Staff very pleasant as well.
- 3/5
This beautiful old building clearly had a storied past, but the basic furnishings, lack of usable outlets, and cheap building materials undermine the experience. The beds were also very creaky and hard. The staff were nice, there is parking across the street, and the proximity to Times Square, as well as the general quiet of the building, are the selling points.
- 5/5
Great staff and location
- 5/5
Great location.
- 4.5/5
The location is great. Right near Times Square. Beautiful facility.
- 4/5
It has an excellent location but poor air conditioning.
- 3/5
el cuarto de una cama esta muy chiquito pero todo es bueno.
- 4/5
The location was terrific. Also, the deli/market next door was reasonably priced and very convenient.
- 4/5
This is a charming little hotel just a block off from Times Square. Very convenient for subway and bus use but also walking distance to many fun places including all the broadway theaters. The lobby was very warm so we didn’t hang out in there at all but the rooms were very clean, well kept and cool to come back to after being out in the heat all day. There is no mini fridge or microwave in the room so bringing back left overs is not an option, there is also not any kind of coffee or snacks offered but there are 2 coffee shops on the same street/block and an eatery right next door that does fresh cooked grill food and lots of grab and go options as well as fresh coffee.
- 5/5
My daughter and I had a wonderful experience and will definitely be coming back. We especially hope to stay on the 10th floor again so we can see Esmeralda, whose outstanding hospitality made our visit even more memorable. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable!
- 5/5
Pretty clean. Just normal rust/wear and tear. Great location! Quick walk to most theaters. My only complaint is no ice / fridge or water fountains. But for the price and location it was worth it
- 4/5
It was a good stay
- 4/5
The hotel isn't super fancy, but it's well-maintained. The rooms are basic but clean. The true value of this hotel is the location - it's so close to so many things! Times Square is literally at one end of the block, and you can see Radio City Music Hall from the other end. Rockefeller Center is just minutes from that. For someone visiting NYC for the first time, this is a great central location to stay.
- 2/5
The hotel’s ancient even though they’ve renovated some of the rooms. They said ours was newly renovated but the bathroom reeked of mildew! And the smell started wafting into the bedroom. There was no soap or shampoo in the shower dispenser. They have ZERO amenities at the hotel. The front desk clerk was kind enough to give my cousin and I each a bottle of water from the staff personal stash. I mean ZERO amenities!!! I’d never stay here again.
- 3/5
Bad plumbing, shower drained slow, shower water control faucet was stripped and hard to control the temperature of the water, water stopped (completely) multiple times during showers. Shower curtain sticking to you as you bathe because it was so small. No electrical outlets near the bed or close to a table or chair. Beds weren't exactly comfortable, hard and springs in mattress were unforgiving, bathroom was extremely small, toilet, sink, and shower super close together, no room to move or dry yourself in the bathroom due to everything being so close together, and the inability to use the toilet comfortably. Stayed on the 12th floor, elevators were really slow and hard to catch at times. Pros Room was clean (linens, towels, and floors, etc.), A/C worked fine, it's a fantastic location close to most everything of interest, and the staff was friendly and courteous.
- 3/5
Clean and friendly but very basic with virtually no services at all: no coffee machine, broken toilet lid, non working Venetian blind, single ply loo paper. Great location with good staff needs some investment in the building - old and tired beds.
- 4/5
Thank you! 👍👏
- 4/5
Great location near all the sights of times square and Broadway
- 4/5
The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was fine
- 5/5
Everyone was so helpful and friendly. The location was perfect for us, so close to everything. I would stay here again with no hesitation
- 5/5
Great staff
- 5/5
Exceptional
- 3/5
Prime location, but a very simple hotel, small rooms, no fridge in standard queen rooms, no views, no place to put toiletries in the bathroom. Clean. You are paying for the location, basically. Staff was very friendly
- 4/5
Biz traveler seeking cheap room. Met that. Older property and not the ritz. But good value
- 5/5
Perfect spot for a family of 4. Me, my wife, 18year old, and 11 year old. Great access to time square and several eating spots and also subway. Felt safe the entire time and was great place to stay for the price. The staff was great and definitely ask them about a car service from and to the airport. $65 and was picked up in a brand new yukon that was very nice. Loved this trip
- 5/5
The hotel is in an excellent location, with Times Square within walking distance, plenty of great dining options nearby, and outstanding cleanliness. As cleanliness is one of my top priorities when choosing a hotel, I was especially impressed. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and would gladly stay there again.
- 5/5
This is perfect proximity to Times Square without hearing all of the hustle and bustle. Convenient walk to subway, bus and places to eat. Would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
Excellent location, clean room. It's NYC so you'll never sleep well even though the bed was comfortable....way too much noise all hours of the night, doesn't matter what hotel you choose there will always be noise. Nothing to fault at this hotel and would stay again. Rooms are small but they all are in NYC. Right in the middle of the chaos and I loved it. No aircon.
- 5/5
Excellent location. Clean room. Bar is closed, but multiple restaurants are next door and within walking distance. I’d stay again.
- 5/5
Great space. Great location. The pub next door called the perfect pint was fabulous. The only downfall was the loudness from times square could possibly keep you up at night. But a good glass or two of Guinness at the pub helped to put us right to sleep
- 3.5/5
Location was excellent, staff was very pleasant No hot water 10 pm until 10 am. Found out upon arrival. No refrigerator in the room and no microwave
- 5/5
If you are a light and sensitive sleeper, bring ear plugs. I am not at all, so the rattling and squeaking window AC unit was not a problem for me. The AC unit worked so well. Never used the heater. For two full beds in the room we had a lot of floor space considering it being NY. The elevators are small and have no AC. The lounge is pretty. It’s greatly located. A short walk down to Times Square. It’s was noisy at all in the hotel and even though the beds weren’t great to sleep in, if you do NY right, it won’t matter and you will sleep just fine. They provide soft blankets to sleep with which has been a first for me and a nice touch. Safe, iron and board, tv, small table and two chairs. The bathroom was obviously small but still doable with 4 women on the trip. There is a lack of outlets so bring a power strip or something. Smooth check-in and check out. There was one staff member who seemed grumpy and we would avoid but the rest were great.
- 5/5
Small rooms, no frills. Don’t expect much and you’ll be happy. Great location. Served it’s purpose.
- 4/5
Will be back!
- 3/5
Absolutely no amenities. This is a no frills location. In window air conditioners, no refrigerators etc. The shower was quite bad, clean but maybe 1 foot wide and no conditioner. 2 very small elevators fit maybe 4 or 5 people and there are at least 12 floors. The cleaning crew were blocking the elevators at check in time so there was no way for anyone to use the elevators in a timely manner. The cleaning woman got smart with me. Not everyone has the ability to walk up or down 12 flights of stairs.
- 4/5
Great, budget hotel in midtown. Location was excellent and they kindly let us drop off our bags before our room was ready. The rooms are simple, but when visiting NYC, you don’t really need to spend that much time in the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Great hotel---Very basic, but VERY clean with a great staff. I've been staying at this hotel for years. Perfect location in the middle of the theatre district.
- 5/5
NONE
- 5/5
Staff was very helpful room was nice and clean
- 5/5
Awesome stay!!
- 5/5
Close to everything, clean, friendly staff, and decent sized rooms for NYC.
- 5/5
Hotel St James was exactly what we wanted! The room was clean before we got there and always cleaned upon request. The staff was very helpful, we had a few questions/requests and they never hesistated to assist. The air conditioner worked well! Two days were very hot in the city so coming back to a cold room was incredible. We would definitely stay again.
- 4/5
Location is great, staff was very friendly.
- 5/5
Small but exactly what is needed. Modern, chic, moody and cozy. The pillows and bed were incredible. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
Bathroom is small, bed was amazing, pillows amazing, old hotel and still amazing and comfortable. We would stay here again.
- 3/5
price is good old hotel
- 3/5
hotel was not to much liking very vintage/ old type hotel no Ac. Staff was awsome
- 3/5
Well, the steam was off on the block for the first night, so we knew we wouldn’t have warm water for showers, but the shower water never did get warm. Cold showers the entire time. The sink water was warm, just not the shower. It was clean, which is the most important thing for me, and it was close to everything we wanted to be close to.
- 5/5
It was very clean. It had everything you needed beds showers bathtubs. It did not have hot water for one day but other than that it was fine. The showers will get hot and cold and hot and cold. All you have to do is just get out of the sprayer shower when it got cold until they got warmed again. Very close to all the attractions that you would want to go by walking. No breakfast is provided or there is no kitchen that you can buy breakfast either at the location of the hotel. But you had lots of places to go eat around it and you had a coffee shop just across it had a blow dryer had an iron a small ironing board. Had a small TV. It was OK cause we didn’t watch TV too much.
- 5/5
Great location, and good price. Staff were helpful and the property was decently clean. Good air conditioning too! I really enjoyed my stay here and have no complaints.
- 4/5
Everything is in walking distance or easy subway ride. No coffee maler or microwave in room but there is an excellent Bodega/food place right noxt door that is open 24/7. The room was very quiet and able to get a good nights sleep. Would stay again.
- 3/5
The room was small, but clean. The heat and the A/C vied for attention. Staff was okay.
- 5/5
Very close to Times Square. Very convenient and clean rooms
- 1/5
Staff was unwelcoming. Elevator unreliable and 3 different levels in the bathroom which cause one family member to fall. Stale room with window unit AC. Did not stay the night at the property, didn't even stay an hour. When told lobby staff, all they said was checking out early? Ok.
- 4/5
This was not my first stay at the St. James. I return time and again primarily because of their staff and location. The staff has always been more than pleasant and helpful. With a great restaurant and market right next door, it's a complete package. In the past, I have really disliked the smell of the cleaning products used. This time around, this was not the case.

Location was amazing and the room was huge for my family of four! We walked to the Museum of Broadway, saw a great show a few blocks away, and felt safe and secure! Would definitely stay here again!
- 1/5
Ran out hot water. Bed like sleeping on floor. I’ve been to nyc dozen times. Worse place I’ve ever stayed. Pics on website ver MIs leading. Never back there.
- 4/5
Rooms are nicer than the lobby lead us to believe, but it is a small, cute, historic style hotel. Not many amenities and is pretty basic. Noise level HIGH from other guests, you can hear door slams, people talking, etc. Cleanliness good, charm is definitely there.
- 5/5
It’s is exactly what you see in pictures, the room is small but enough space just to sleep :)
- 5/5
There is a nice bodega right next to it where you can get amazing food. We stood 4 nights and NEVER heard the loud noises of the city
- 3/5
Not impressed. No hot water for 2 days, with no compensation, no fridge in room,
- 5/5
Good location if you like being very near Times Square. Perfectly sized room. Well priced. Cool staff!
- 5/5
Nice hotel, excellent location
- 4/5
Overall it was great stay in this hotel. Room was clean, king bed was comfortable, bathroom was good. Not bad at all for the price. Very convenient location.
- 5/5
Perfect location and our room was taken care of everyday!
- 5/5
A lovely place with an excellent location close to everything. If I ever return to Manhattan, I would happily stay there again.
- 4/5
The location was great. The ease of finding it was great. The place is older, but met my one-night needs. I chose a room with a private bathroom. The heat was controlled by the hotel so we used the air conditioning to cool the room. The place was clean. One lamp didn't work. Another visitor complained about theirs not working either. Bring your own soap. Trying to use their containers was like trying to squeeze the end of the toothpaste out of the tube. Overall, I was in a great location, I felt safe and my needs were met.
- 5/5
Our room was clean, the staff was very nice. We had a wonderful day in New York.
- 5/5
Amazing location with Times Square a block away and nestled in the heart of Broadway. This is a great old world hotel. Nothing fancy but clean with friendly staff and right in the middle of Broadway and Times Square. There is a great coffee place across called Gumption and the area is full of great places to eat or drink only a few blocks away. Cooks is right next door for a quick bite and we had the best pizza at Carver's about two blocks away, which had a delicious gelato place right next-door to it called Amarinos. I've been recommending this hotel to anyone who wants to visit New York and be in the middle of all the excitement. I'm already planning another visit.
- 4/5
Very close to the centre, with an old-fashioned American vibe. Stylish, cosy and everything’s nearby! There are no kettles or crockery in the rooms; you have to go down to the lobby to get hot water. There isn’t a water cooler either. This detracts slightly from the overall impression.
- 5/5
Great staff clean room. Great location
- 5/5
Great trip! Excellent location!

- 3/5
We chose this hotel for its proximity to the theaters of NYC which worked well. However, this is a bare bones hotel at best. Room was on the 12th floor and had very minimal amenities. The window air conditioner worked well and the bed was comfortable. Make sure you bring a sound machine to drown out the slamming of doors as people arrive and exit at all hours of night. Sound proofing between rooms was good, but you can hear everything that happens in the hallway. We chose a room in the rear of the hotel to avoid street noise, but didn't realize how quickly and loudly the doors close. The most annoying inconvenience was the fluctuating temperature in the shower which would intermittently lose pressure and occasionally just stop completely before resuming after a few seconds. Lots of food options around and the location worked well for us.
- 5/5
Value for money. Good size bedroom with comfortable beds. The bathroom was spacious. We were on the twelfth floor and at the back of the building which was very quiet. Very helpful and friendly staff.
- 4/5
This is an historic old hotel in midtown Manhattan. You shouldn’t expect any “new” things here. You stay here for the location. All necessary things are in the room such as a clean bed, shower with a good shower head, and an AC unit. However, it is VERY noisy with the window AC unit. Even with a pair of earplugs, it was hard to fall into sleep. (I am a good solid sleeper, but my husband had more difficulty sleeping.) Staff are all very nice & helpful.
- 5/5
This place was so close to Times Square so walking was a breeze to any good food or subway
- 4/5
great staff, convenient location, clean room. very thin walls and the air conditioning was loud. overall a great stay and a great price for the area
- 4/5
Excelente ubicación fácil se puede caminar y encontrar rápidamente muchos lugares de sumo interés
- 3/5
The location. The lobby is comfortable with lots of seating options. Elevators are small but work well. The rooms are a decent size and extremely clean but a bit dark and depressing. The room decor is awful.
- 5/5
My daughter had her heart set on a room with a view of the street, but our room faced another building/alley. Several hours after we checked in, she asked if we could switch rooms, just for the view. The staff member was very nice and accommodating and switched our room immediately. We were in a new, street view room within 10 minutes! There wasn't anything that I didn't like.

Excellent location!!!

Super friendly staff. Perfect location
- 4/5
This hotel was in an excellent location as far as proximity to visitor sites. The room was quite adequate. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 4/5
Needed an economical hotel for two nights to see Broadway shows. While the property and building are definitely older, everything was clean and put together. The front desk was great and housekeeping did a great job. It is a smaller (typical) NYC hotel room. The mattress is not the best quality, but was fine for two nights. Note that the a/c isn’t central, but is a unit in the window. I was concerned when we arrived, but cranked it up while we were out and made everything nice and cool. I personally wouldn’t stay here more than a couple nights, it it’s extremely convenient to Broadway theaters and great restaurants.
- 5/5
centrally located in times square, walking distance to just about anywhere. property is very well maintained, room was great, only suggestion is to add full size mirrors

Very walkable to Broadway, Radio City, Bryant Park and Times Square. Also, Central Park is a 15 minute walk. Old hotel with lots of charm. Rooms are small but renovated and all you need to sleep in.
- 5/5
Good location
- 3/5
Very basic accommodations. Like VERY. The place was clean, but bare! No decor, very old furniture, hard beds, no mini fridge, no microwave NADA! However, for the price it was clean and safe and conveniently located. Just do not expect amenities.
- 5/5
I also really appreciated being able to safely store my luggage when I arrived early before check-in. The location is amazing - only about a two-minute walk from Times Square and conveniently located near many tourist attractions, whether you’re walking or taking the subway. Having Walgreens and Starbucks directly across the street was also super convenient. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and would definitely stay here again!
- 2/5
It was close to time square
- 3/5
The rooms are pretty clean, it’s an old hotel so small rooms. What I didn’t like was there was no coffee or water available. I feel like that’s the minimum that should have been offered. The location is pretty central albeit a lot of walking around the city finding your way.
- 5/5
It was also the most spacious room I’ve had in Manhattan and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel was also very clean. My only criticism was the street outside the hotel can get a little loud when the theatres kick out but it did quieten down over night and through the day.
- 5/5
Weekend night roadworks could be heard from our 4th floor room but not too disruptive. Overall highly recommend
- 5/5
It was great. Just need more ice :)

Room was nice, like a piece of history. Everything was very clean and staff was friendly. Location was perfect for what we wanted. We came to see a few plays. Right around the corner from Time Square. Easy to get to Publix transportation. We very much enjoyed our stay. .
- 3/5
Fantastic location (a very short walk to the time square and other major venues), old building therefore expect some rundowns, there is a tv but no connection to Netflix or YouTube,
- 4/5
Sencillo, tranquilo, muy limpio. Ubicacion inmejorable.

Good location in NY City.

Amazing location, good price, staff were nice, clean, would stay again.
- 3/5
I travel for my work. After reading the reviews, I decided to give Hotel St. James a try. The price was right and the location was optimal for the job. The historic property is quite clean, due to an attentive staff. The rooms themselves left a lot to be desired. The first room I was in was bare bones with wood blinds that covered a window unit A/C. There was no table, mini fridge or microwave. The water in the shower was long to turn hot, fussy to adjust, then didn't stay hot. Lastly, the mattress was one of the worst I have ever slept on. I even asked housekeeping flip it over but it didn't help. The bed frame wasn't attached to anything so whenever you touched it, it moved all over the floor. I am not a fussy traveler, but not getting a good night's sleep is the worst. The second room was only minimally better. I took it over after another guest chose not to stay at all. I needed to extend a day but there was nothing else available. The mattress was minimally better, but the pillows were terrible and worn. That shower was the same, water temperature finicky, and unless the shower head was adjusted properly, water sprayed out of the connection with nothing coming out of the shower. After 10 days, I was truly happy to check out and head home. Too bad, because again, the location was perfect.
- 5/5
The location is great!!
- 5/5
This hotel is in the perfect location, especially if you’re seeing a lot of Broadway shows. The staff are lovely and accommodated any request we made during our 2 week stay, I’d happily stay here again.
- 5/5
It’s relatively bare bones, but it’s clean, the staff is lovely and you can’t beat the location.
- 4/5
Good value for location. Nice clean room.
- 5/5
This hotel has personality and a very kind and easy-going staff. Great location and quiet for a no-frills experience.
- 3/5
The location was great. Their website should say there are no food options at the hotel or fridges in the room but you can get bfast and many other food options next door at Cook’s. There also is no counter space for your health and beauty items in the bathroom.
- 5/5
Great area to stay and close to multiple subway entrances, so you can get anywhere in the city. Staff was absolutely amazing. They were more than accommodating with our few requests. Rooms are great for the price. Hotel is couple blocks from Times Square, but not too close if you know what I mean. Great restaurants and bars nearby. Also, there is a convenience store, right next-door to the hotel. Would definitely recommend staying here.
- 4/5
Everything was wonderful for the two days we were in nyc but the beds were uncomfortable and difficult to sleep.. I wouldn’t recommend for a longer stay.
- 5/5
All good; nice well-maintained property . Staff helpful and efficient.
- 4/5
Room had a view, AC was a window one, which was fine. Matthew ar the front desk was really great. He was helpful with questions and super cool.
- 5/5
Our stay was great. We arrived well before check-in time, but we were offered early check-in for $25, and we only had to wait about 10 minutes. We had a very short stay, but the room was great, AC worked well, and the staff was very helpful.
- 3/5
Pleasant
- 4/5
Good location. Verry good staff
- 5/5
It's not modern, but if you've done your research you'll know it's over 100 years old and appeared on the movie Big (obviously been updated since then). My only criticism is the lack of tea making facilities in the room, but there's a Starbucks close by and a shop next to the hotel for everything you might need. I would definitely recommend staying here, staff were really helpful and friendly too.
- 1/5
I left at 10am but they still have my deposit being held. The concierge would not give me a receipt. At present, it still appears that I wasn’t checked out.
- 5/5
and the staff couldn't be more helpful. I would recommend highly, If you are looking for a nice clean hotel this is it. No frills but very good value!
- 5/5
The hotel was clean and the staff were super helpful.
- 4/5
Great location, comfortable bed, good sized room, helpful staff, great to have a 24hr eatery next door.
- 5/5
The location is perfect!
- 5/5
The only thing I would change- bring a portable fan if it’s super hot out. Great location and friendly staff!
- 2/5
2.) Room very small, pictures super miss leading. 3.) We had lotion in our body soap dispenser & soap in our shampoo. HUGE CONCERN: We were on the 6th floor opened our bathroom window. NO Screen. How is that not a safety violation?!?!
- 3/5
I appreciate it is a historic building but the room was in desperate need of an update. Pillows were good, mattress was uncomfortable, and bathroom was awful. Especially the dirty shower curtain and shower head.
- 5/5
Great stay!
- 3/5
The rooms and hotel were very clean. The room itself was supposed to be ADA compliant, but there was a huge step up to get into the bathroom.
- 5/5
Nice hotel 1 block from Times Square. Many dining and convenience food options right on same block. Staff was super friendly. Offered early check in for a small fee which was wonderful.
- 4/5
Very very clean. Very nice staff. Older hotel. Poor shower pressure.
- 4/5
Very good
- 4/5
The front desk staff was great and also the housekeeping staff.room was clean . The only problem we experienced was with the water pressure.
- 5/5
There was hair when we first arrived on the sheets but after they came to clean everything was perfect. I would stay again.
- 5/5
If you enjoy staying in boutique hotels and are not Bougee (lol) this is a great place. Kind staff, great location for Broadway Shows and all around. Great stay.
- 5/5
The room was perfect for what we were looking for! The price was great! The location was amazing! The staff was nice! If you are looking for lots of amenities, this is not the place for you though. The room we got had a bed, tv, nightstands, a coffee table, a/c unit, and a bathroom with a hair dryer. We didn’t need much though. We were only there to shower and sleep. Right outside though was an Irish bar, a coffee shop, and a convenience store with everything you could want.
- 5/5
This was a perfect location if you want to be close to Times Square and Broadway. The room was very clean and the staff were great. Anyone visiting should ask about the shuttle available from and to LaGuardia airport. Uber & others charge a fortune.
- 4/5
Room was small but fine. Elevators were extremely small and very noisy. It’s an old hotel, so it’s to be expected, but if you’re claustrophobic take the stairs.
- 5/5
Good location
- 4/5
On the first day we had to have them come and fix the safe. Out of 6 days on 2 had hot water. I don't appreciate cold showers. There's no parking, but we did not need that anyway. They need to put hooks in bathroom to hang clothes on while changing/showering. Trying to get luggage up few entrance steps was a challenge. Several times people were sitting on entrance steps in the way when we were going or coming.
- 5/5
Fantastic location made it easy to drop by our room between activities to drop stuff off or just take a breather. We had a room with two full beds and were pleasantly surprised by its size. Compared to other hotel rooms we’ve had in Manhattan, this one was more spacious.
- 5/5
Our room was small but comfortable, and was really inexpensive. The air conditioner didn't work when we got there, and maintenance came quickly to reset it and was very kind. Staff were all really friendly, and you cannot beat this location!
- 4/5
Overall: Great location, reasonable price and friendly staff. I'd return to this hotel.
- 3/5
Very old air conditioning and heating system. Tiny bathroom, nowhere to put my toiletry.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel for a 2-star hotel. Very nice
- 5/5
Yes
- 4/5
Hotel St.James is a small, quiet hotel. The room was small but comfortable. The location is phenomenal. There are two subway stations within a 4 minute walk and the 42nd Street Times Square subway station is within a 15 min walk. The air conditioner is a window mounted unit and is very loud and moderately functional. Housekeeping kept the room spotless and well stocked. Housekeeping was provided every day. Lyceum theater is literally feet from the hotel entrance. Several other theaters are easily within walking distance . There is a market next door to the hotel called Cook Market that provides an affordable alternative to expensive restaurants. The market has premade sandwiches, wraps, deserts, a hot line, a fruit line an area where fresh sandwiches are made. The food is very good. There is a dining room on top of the market so you can take food away for eat upstairs. I visited at lunch time and there must have been 30 people in the market getting lunch. You know it’s good when locals eat there. I utilized the market for 2 meals during the 6 days that I stayed in NYC.
- 5/5
Everyone was friendly helpful, and clean rooms. All one could ask for :)
- 4/5
The hotel staff were great, the check in and out process was super easy, the location was amazing. The hotel is pretty and old, bare bones and basic. We visited in April/May and the a/c wasn't quite enough, it might be pretty hot in the summer. Overall, the stay was very nice.
- 3/5
There is no central AC/heat and our window unit was in terrible condition and duct-taped to the windows. It made a horrible noise when on, so we couldn't keep it on while we slept. We were offered another room when one became available, but it required us to be there at noon on one of the days and we were out and about with plans so it wasn't feasible. The location is great for walking to Times Square and broadway but be sure to consider the noise and light at night. Large blinds did nothing to help with the light at night and closing them means closing off the window AC.
- 4/5
The staff was fantastic. The rooms have been recently remodeled and were very nice. The only downfall was the amenities lacked a little. There was no in room coffee or eve coffee available in the lobby in the morning. But fortunatly there is a great coffee shop right across the street called Gumptions. Connally's Irish Pub was a great spot for breakfast every morning and Cook's Eatery was perfect spot for late nigh snacks.
- 4/5
Water pressure in shower would go in and out. Dropped so low one time, the water cut at the shower head and went to bathtub spout. No light above sink.
- 5/5
The room was smallish and spare, but clean and pleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable. The staff was friendly and cheerful. To find such a nice a hotel in this great and convenient location and for this fine price was astonishing. No parking, but you shouldn’t be driving into midtown anyway
- 1/5
Very old and dated. Needs a total renovation
- 5/5
The property is beautiful. My room was clean and it smelled nice and clean. Andres at the front desk is amazing, very friendly, knowledgeable and he speaks several languages. The property is located within walking distance from Times Square. They are several different restaurants and bars right next to the hotel. We really enjoyed our stay.
- 4/5
Great location in the heart of it all yet slightly out of the craziness of 7th av
- 3/5
Room was clean but in rough condition, not at all like pictures. Works fine for an overnight when only there to sleep but expensive for what you get, even for NYC. Window air conditioning unit in a hotel seems weird to me.
- 5/5
I stay here every time I’m in the city. The people are so lovely & the rooms are always clean.
- 4/5
Air conditioning unit in the window made a loud dripping noise during the rain that kept me up all night. There are not enough outlets or places for charging. Need some bathroom counter space. Towels were up so high I needed a ladder to reach them. Bathtub was way too slippery. No complimentary lotion. No ice machine. Staff was friendly and it was clean. Liked the location.
- 5/5
Clean rooms and great staff
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
That said, the property has a lot of character, the location is great, the friendly staff, and the price make it worth staying. Would recommend on a budget.
- 5/5
It was an older building but very well maintained. It was a nice place to stay. Right in the Times Square area, so a few minutes walk to all sorts of food, shopping or the subway
- 5/5
Great location, clean accommodations and helpful staff. Will stay there again!
- 5/5
We loved staying at Hotel St James! The location is perfect for those seeing Broadway shows, and the staff was so friendly and welcoming.
- 4/5
We never parked as the transit system's were good, the location was great. The beds were ok but they are getting soft and the mattresses may need changing out, besides that we really enjoyed NYC.😃 THANKS .

The stay was Pretty decent. You know what you’re getting when you book the hotel. A nice place to lay your head when you’re on the go!
- 5/5
Nos encantó este hotel , muy buen precio para estar u ciado a 3 cuadras de TIME SQUARE. Un lugar estilo antiguo pero acogedor y limpio.
- 1/5
Awful experience. I should have stayed with what I know. The night staff was rude and unaccommodating. Place is run down. No amenities.
- 4/5
Staff were friendly, room was good, only downside was the water pressure in the shower.
- 4/5
Property was clean. Friendly staff. Close to timesquare and next to grocery
- 4/5
Hotel lobby, hallways, air conditioning, and elevators are tired and need refreshing. Rooms need a comfortable chair to sit in. Reasonable price for NYC . I would stay again.
- 5/5
Clean room. Great location!
- 5/5
Value for money and a very decent place. Location is the best part!
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff, great location
- 5/5
We had a great time there, it was a close proximity to Times Square.
- 5/5
The hotel staff was friendly, helpful and polite. Room was a little cramped and the bathtub was dirty, but the beds were very comfortable and daily housekeeping was great. Staff smiled and greeted us whenever we passed. The hotel is safe and conveniently located, too - would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
The room was great. I love the historic building even if it’s a little run down. That’s part of its charm, and the location, if you’re going to see Broadway plays, is excellent. You’re right there. A big 👍 up.
- 5/5
An excellent stay in all senses of all words. This turn of the 20th century hotel feels like home.
- 2/5
Disappointing
- 2/5
No coffee. A bed and bath only
- 5/5
Great location. 5 minutes from Times Square, Broadway. Room was spacious and clean and check in using Expedia was fast and easy.
- 3/5
The location of this hotel was excellent, close to most major sites and with restaurants and stores nearby. The room was relatively clean but in need of updating and upkeep. The mattress was uncomfortable and seemed old because it had springs. The sheets, pillows and blanket were not good quality. Overall the hotel was adequate but hasn’t been maintained well. The furniture in the lobby was worn and uncomfortable. But the location made it very convenient.
- 5/5
We would recommend this hotel.
- 3/5
I have mixed feelings about this hotel. The positive is definitely the location! Half a block from Times Square is great. It is definitely a basic room. The worst part is the elevators were down when we finally got to check in. Walking a million steps, carrying luggage is miserable! Luckily we didn’t have much with us. I’m not sure if I’d recommend this hotel but the room was basic, clean, and quiet.
- 5/5
Great location, the room was spacious, the ac & heater worked well. The bed was comfy. Staff were very friendly. Overall great experience!
- 5/5
Great value for the money. The staff was great. If you work remotely, be sure to ask for a room with a desk; not all of them have one. Water was warm, not hot, and pressure was adequate but not great. Location is great. Wifi worked well. Would stay again.
- 3/5
The heater made a loud noise at night and kept us from sleeping well. We reported it, but they said it was normal—that was the only thing I didn't like. Everything else was fine.
- 3/5
Overall, rather poorly maintained. Elevators break down frequently. Only one bathroom in the lobby area. No amenities at all. AC in the room was really bad.
- 5/5
Built in 1903, it is one of the oldest hotels in NYC. It shows a bit of wear, but my room was OK and clean. No in-room amenities, other than a TV, but I didn't need more than that. Because of it's ideal location (1/2 block from Times Square and very close to Walgreen's and eateries) and economical rates, I'd stay there again. It's a smaller hotel so you can get to really know the staff.
- 5/5
One elevator was broken at one night; shower water was not hot enough. Location is perfect.
- 3/5
Hotel was very clean everywhere..Smelled great. Bed was pretty comfy and staff was great. Also great location and price. My only complaint was there was no fridge or microwave. Would probably stay again !
- 4/5
Traffic noise was horrible even on the 12th floor.
- 1/5
Rooms look nothing like pictures. Cold shower. Heater doesn’t work. Draft from window not properly sealed. Fire alarm test conducted without first announcing to guest. When I tried to speak to front desk, the employee answered me with “for this price you expected different?”
- 5/5
The room was spacious and the location of the hotel was truly ideal. Walking distance from Times Square and many other tourist destinations.
- 4/5
My second stay at the hotel was signigicantly better than the first. My room was remodeled, spacious with new AC, shower, bathroom fixtures. It’s a great location…Time Square and Broadway adjacent but not in it, close to Bryant Park. I will stay again.
- 3/5
THe hotel is perfectly located in Times Square. Easy to get to, and tons of thing to do around it. I did find that the pictures of the rooms were a bit misleading. The hotel is very old, and it did not look as if they have done any renovations in scores of years. The TV had no modern streaming possibilities (Netflix, Hulu, Prime). There was a window AC and no Vents visible. Because it is in Times Square, the noise level was pretty loud (because the windows are not sealed.
- 5/5
Sometimes a lottery with hotels in cities but this one did not disappoint. Clean and spacious room. Front desk staff very friendly and helpful. Situated perfectly to explore Rockefeller, Central Park and subway stations at hand to go further afield. Definitely return to Hotel St James.
- 4/5
Staff are very friendly. It is an old building - the elevators are slow. There’s no fridge or coffee in the rooms, that would have been a nice thing to have. The beds were ok, not the best but certainly not the worst. I would consider staying here again.
- 5/5
Overall really enjoyed our stay. It felt more spacious than most available older buildings in NY, the staff was awesome and the room was very clean. My only "gripe" isn't a big deal and it's on me for not looking, but they did not have a personal fridge so we couldn't keep anything cold. Other than that really don't have a bad thing to say. The credit card hold is only $50 which is wonderful compared to most other hotels. I would stay there again as the location is good for pubs and Times Square.
- 3/5
Advertised on Expedia with breakfast included, no breakfast available nor offered.
- 5/5
Very conveniently located. Excellent front desk staff. Very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Very well located and clean
- 5/5
I missed my coffee in the room or downstairs, but it was available as take out next door. I'll come again
- 5/5
Beautiful room perfect location plenty of food options near by great staff clean definitely would book again
- 4.5/5
Superb
- 4/5
The heater made a very loud banging sound throughout most of the night which made it hard to sleep. Everything else was great, loved the bed and pillows. Great location
- 5/5
To start off, we got to the hotel earlier than check in time (by about 5 hours) and the staff were extremely accommodating. They have an area to place your bags, but they ended up having a room available and we able to get us in for a $25 fee which was nice. The staff have been kind during our entire stay and greeted us every time we walked in the door. I booked the queen bed room and it was perfect. A perfect amount of room, not too small not huge, and a bathroom with soap provided. We figured out the air conditioning and it ended up being fine and working well. Overall, really great experience, will definitely be staying here again. On our check out day, we were also able to keep our bags in the lobby for the rest of the day until leaving for our flight.
- 4/5
Friendly staff, great location, clean and nice facilities. Would have liked warmer water for the shower, however.
- 5/5
Room was extremely clean can't beat the location
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
I did have a room right across from the elevator so that also did not help for noise. It is an old building so you’re not going to feel like in you’re in a very modern hotel but it was very clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Staff were awesome. Rooms are clean.
- 5/5
The only 2 small downsides with my stay were that the wifi wasn’t good (but it could also be the tall buildings around and/or the age of the hotel) and the high pitch noise from the showers (the walls are thick and you can’t hear your neighbors but if anyone showers, you definitely hear it). But besides those two things, I will DEFINITELY be staying at the hotel if I’m ever back in the city and will be recommending it to anyone that I know who’s going to the city. It’s in such a good location with lots to see and do!
- 5/5
Nice convenient affordable.
- 2/5
Affordable but that’s about it. WiFi sucks, the beds were too hard.
- 4/5
The room was good quality for the price and in a convenient location. The bed and shower were both very comfortable. We had good sleeps and were never disturbed by noises from other hotel guests. The staff at the front desk was friendly and helpful. The one thing that would be easy to improve upon would be the Wifi. It seemed to never really work for us.
- 3/5
Not worth the price, although the location is great, right in the middle of the theatre district. No doorman or any help from the staff. Like a motel.
- 5/5
Excellent location if your itinerary includes Broadway shows. Within a block of of Times Square. Room much bigger than thought. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
- 5/5
Rather good , not big hotel .
- 4/5
Good location, good price
- 5/5
Great choice. Stayed for a week. Stephanie and the rest of the staff was amazing.
- 5/5
Exceptional
- 5/5
Exceptional helpful staff and close to everything. Rooms are a good size and there is a bathtub and shower. Bed was comfortable and had a great night sleep. Water could have been hotter in the shower

No breakfast, not even a bottle of water in the room. I wished there would have been a possibility to make tea in the hotel. Perhaps in the lobby?

The location The bathroom too small
- 5/5
The room was clean, bed was great, sheets were crisp and fresh. The room location to everything was perfect. Reception was friendly and I loved the fact that when ever we came in there was a person there, it just felt safe. Would of loved a small fridge to keep some drinks cold.
- 4.5/5
Close to everything and quiet at night considering how close we were to Times Square Had all your needs and helpful staff
- 4.5/5
Superb
- 3.5/5
Clean room, close to subway Kind of small, but that’s NYC
- 4/5
Location a 10. Check in was a breeze. Housekeeping was responsive.
- 4.5/5
Water and room not as warm as they could have been. Elevator is often slow.
- 5/5
Great location for Broadway shows, the St. Patrick's Parade and dining spots. nothing I could think of
- 0.5/5
I want a full refund. The lock to my door #301 did not work
- 2/5
Excellent location within easy walking distance to Times Square, Rock center, Bryant Park, 5th Ave, etc. Hotel is dated, very basic - a small-ish room with a TV, and a bathroom. .... No coffee in the building.
- 4/5
Economical for NYC! Nothing special.
- 4.5/5
Stayed here for the location and it really can’t be beat — just steps from Times Square and the Broadway theaters. I had a queen room that was actually larger than most Manhattan hotel rooms, which was a nice surprise. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. It’s a pretty standard hotel and not fancy, but for the price it’s a great value and worked perfectly for a NYC trip They do charge $25 for early check-in if a room is available, which is something to be aware of. The room doesn’t have central heating or a thermostat. Heat comes from a radiator, and the window A/C unit isn’t fully sealed, so the room was a little chilly during my winter stay There’s no microwave or mini refrigerator in the room—just a heads up.
- 5/5
This hotel is in a perfect location. So close to Times Square, theatres and the subway. The hotel is very bare bones, no bar, no restaurant, no refrigerator or microwave. However, it was spotless and has several eateries just doors away. The staff was amazing, very accommodating and helpful and allowed us a late check out. This was my second stay and I would stay again
- 5/5
Room spotless staff very friendly. Excellent position for Times Square and Broadway. Excellent overall. Will be back.
- 5/5
The Hotel St. James was awesome and very reasonable for our 3 night stay! It's right around the corner from the subway in Times Square. The room was very clean and spacious for 2. There are NO amenities (self-serve ice machine in lobby) but that's OK because you can get coffee right across the street and check out Conolly's Pub (very good) just a few doors down along with a convenient store right there as well. The Hotel St. James is an older hotel with character. Definitely recommend and will book my next stay here!
- 2/5
Half of the staff was not friendly and very dismissive and basic amenities were not available.
- 3/5
The room was clean and the hotel is a great location BUT the picture Expedia posted is not what we stayed in! The room had a radiator that made noise and the shower pressure would go from ok to not working at all. The temperature of the shower was lukewarm. After a cold day outside you want a HOT shower. Talked to desk on day two no one came to check it so had a second cool shower then finally came after complained a second time just in time for us to check out. Beds were ok. Staff was friendly. I paid $25 to check in early and ended with a corner room no real windows to see out and shower issues. But it was clean! We were on the 12th floor. Elevators are old and take forever. This is an older hotel but in a convenient location. But Expedia do better tbis is not what you advertised!
- 4/5
Location is excellent, short walk to many sites! Clean rooms, walls are a little thin but we weren’t in our room much anyway would stay again!
- 5/5
Wonderful staff, clean rooms and convenient to all things NYC we wanted to see. Highly recommend this hotel.
- 4/5
Staff was friendly and helpful too basic room but was decent size
- 3/5
Bad room cleaning
- 5/5
EXCELLENT

The room was okay , in a great place in terms of walking distance to time square, broadway,
- 5/5
Staff friendly and helpful, good location close to subway

.
- 4/5
Friendly staff
- 3/5
Room was clean and nice, but no hot water in one room and no shower in the other.
- 4/5
The location was great and very convenient. However, the room was smaller than expected, the facilities seemed somewhat outdated, and the lack of a refrigerator made the stay less comfortable.
- 5/5
Clean room and friendly staff
- 4/5
Everything and everyone was awesome only thing I would want to see added is a coffee maker in the lounge
- 3/5
The staff were courteous. The room was clean. It was no frills, but we had what we needed. I didnt love the products available for bodywash and hair care. It was also a little disconcerting that the luggage hold was basically self serve.
- 3/5
Had no hot water. Didn’t even try to compensate for us not being able to take a shower.
- 5/5
Great staff! Worked with us on extending our stay when our flights were cancelled due to a winter storm
- 5/5
Very clean and in a perfect area for sightseeing.
- 5/5
Eve
- 4/5
Great location! Famous Junior’s right down the street. The cutest little Irish pub, Connolly’s, with delicious breakfast, right next door! Staff was friendly, lobby area is nice and inviting! Beautiful bar area, if only they served alcohol. Quaint little boutique hotel that I would definitely book again!
- 3.5/5
Location excellent and staff helpful Needs some TLC but not major things . Example - sink faucets had “hot and cold” markers gauged off the tops. Works fine but should be fixed. Bed was comfortable, room a bit hot.
- 5/5
Excellent staff and well appointed room.
- 4/5
Location is great! Staff was helpful and nice!
- 1/5
the blankets are not sufficient for winter in NY the employees were nice— but I WAS FREEZING. the blow dryer didn’t work
- 5/5
Staff was super friendly, rooms were very clean and the perfect location. The beds need to be updated. They aren’t the most comfortable. I’d give it a 5 if they upgraded the beds.
- 5/5
Room was fantastic with exactly what we needed. Employees were very friendly and accommodating. This was our second time back and will be back again.
- 5/5
Manager was great
- 4/5
Helpful and responsive staff. Bssic room, but clean and functional. Comfortable beds. Fantastic location.
- 3/5
Fun fact: parts of the movie Big were filmed here.

Room was very clean. Staff courteous and helpful. When we got there the room had just been cleaned and had a strong bleach smell. We had to open the windows to air out for a few hours. I like my room clean, but bleach is very caustic. Otherwise a decent simple place to stay.
- 1/5
We had no heat, or hot water. Bathroom was the size of an airplane bathroom. Only nice thing was location to where we wanted to be.
- 5/5
Clean room, quiet and very friendly and professional staff
- 4/5
Staff were lovely, very helpful and kind. Cleaner was superb.
- 3/5
Great location. Affordable but TV didn’t work. Blinds barely did. Pretty bleak looking room. Ok option if you want a cheap room in a great location
- 4/5
The room was clean and in a great location. The staff was kind and helpful. The room could have used more towels. Also it was warm in the room but the temperature couldn't be adjusted.
- 5/5
Everything clean, staff really friendly, bed super comfortable and warm. Hot running water.
- 4/5
Room eas clean and quiet
- 2/5
The bathroom was very tiny - a little challenging for a big guy to do his business
- 1/5
No heat and no hot water. That’s totally unacceptable
- 5/5
We liked the lounge area in the lobby. We could meet up, read, eat there.
- 4/5
The room was clean and the bed were comfortable I enjoyed my stay

The room was clean and central to the heart of NYC.
- 4/5
The room was very nice and the staff was kind.
- 5/5
Clean rooms, friendly and professional staff and great location!
- 4/5
The hotel is quaint, quiet, and clean. It’s also located close to the Theatre district with restaurants nearby.
- 4/5
Room was clean and big for Manhattan. Comfortable bed, bedding and pillows. We were on a lower floor facing the street and it was definitely noisy, but it didn't keep us up. Others in our group on the same story by not facing the street had quiet rooms. I would have given it a 5-star, but the shower was barely warm, and with the low flow shower head, the water was cool by the time it hit your body.
- 4/5
Location! This hotel is steps from Times Square and Broadway. We were in NYC for 2 nights to watch a couple of Broadway shows and this hotel couldn't be more convenient.
- 4/5
Staff were friendly and the room served our needs. It was very basic, no coffee maker, fridge, etc. It did have a safe and hair dryer at least. It was clean and comfortable to come back after a night on the town. The oddest thing was no furniture in areas where some of the electrical outlets were. We ended up using our luggage as a makeshift table top.
- 4/5
Clean room, extremely spare furnishings
- 3/5
The room was clean and the staff was polite. Minimal amenities (no fridge or coffee), the soap dispenser in the shower was empty, the elevators are very slow, and the lobby smelled like pot occasionally. However, the location and price could not be beat for a clean bed to sleep in right in the middle of everything we wanted to do. Would stay again.
- 5/5
My cousin and I have stayed there every President's day week for many years and find it always just right, close to everything and reasonable.
- 5/5

- 4/5
Clean and comfortable room, friendly staff, convenient location.
- 5/5
The staff were wonderful and the room was clean and comfortable
- 3/5
Also, the water was lukewarm, so showers and washing your face wasn’t pleasant at all. But we appreciated the room service, cleanliness, and coziness of the hotel.
- 5/5
The hotel was nice and clean close to everything the staff made sure everything was ok if not they would try to make right If I go back again I would stay there again the staff was very friendly
- 4/5
This is a budget hotel and you get what you pay for. Great location and friendly staff. Shower hot water can be hit and miss in the rooms ie shower
- 3/5

- 3/5
Housekeeping staff was rude but great stay otherwise
- 5/5

- 3/5
but no wifi in our room water is low pressure no amenities in the room
- 4/5
Room was very clean and great location. Staff very friendly. Only 4 stars because our room was too hot and we could not adjust the temperature.
- 5/5
Our third visit to the Hotel St James was amazing, as usual. The hotel is well situated and clean, with helpful staff. It is a bit loud (not the hotel’s fault, you are located right by Times Square) but nothing ear plugs can’t fix. They have a bag storage in case you arrive before check in or are staying in the area past check out. Overall a great choice!!!
- 4/5
I had a great stay, no complaints really. The location was excellent and the staff was great. There was not hot water in the shower only very small amount and specific times but I made it work and it was ok for my needs.
- 3/5
You cant beat the location and the water was amazingly hot. But the beds are harder than rocks. A fine stay if you're trying to save money like we were!
- 5/5
First time staying in New York and this place was perfect! It was such a convenient location and close to everything for walking distance! Very cute and nice hotel. Deff would stay here again!

You cannot control the temperature in the room and there was no hot water for showers.

The room was ready early, staff were welcoming, the location was perfect to walk to everything, and the history of the hotel made it even more memorable.
- 5/5
Great location and rates.
- 5/5
Location was perfect. You can get to anything you wanted to do in comfortable walking distance. Right in the heart of times square and Broadway to see a show or get some authentic food

Great place to stay near Broadway, Times Square. Great staff. Second time staying here and I will return.
- 5/5
The staff was so helpful!
- 5/5
The people there are very nice. The hotel is very clean and organized.
- 5/5
Excellent location in the middle of Broadway. Polite and courteous staff. Small room, but reasonable for the price considering the location
- 5/5
Great hotel, awesome staff. Bilingual staff.
- 3/5
This room felt a bit like a prison cell as there was no art on the walls. While the lobby sets up a positive expectation, the vibe of the room is off. There is no heat control in the room. There is a radiator that is just on, and sometimes there was a rhythmic sound that got a bit distracting. Air conditioning is thru a window-mounted AC unit and just allowed all the sounds of NYC to come right in the room. I've stayed in hotel rooms across the Times Square area and this was the loudest I believe. The door to the room also kept virtually no sound out. Every time the room adjacent to me opened or closed their door I thought someone was coming in mine. The bathroom door can't be fully opened as it hits into the sink. In general, the bathroom is rather cramped. The phone in my room did not work. You can leave your bad before or after check in for free, which is nice, but that's because you leave it in a room that isn't locked and just come back to get your stuff when you want. Bags could easily be stolen. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly which helped. The location is also stellar for Broadway and the surrounding area.
- 2/5
There was noise everywhere and the beds were uncomfortable. Location was great but wouldn’t stay there again
- 1/5
The shower wouldn’t stop dripping unless you used a lot of force to close it. At first, I thought it was broken. My friend in another room had the same issue, and I even heard someone else complaining about the showers in the lobby. Clearly, this is a common problem. The AC was shut off, and my room felt like an oven. They said it was because it was cold outside, but my room was still unbearably hot. I had to sleep with the window open both nights, which made me feel unsafe because my room was connected to an emergency exit where anyone could walk by. Housekeeping also entered my room without permission while I was gone, even though I didn’t request service. I had personal items everywhere, including an important item on my bed. When they changed the sheets, it fell under the bed, and I thought it had been taken to the laundry. I was panicking because losing it could have been a disaster. Luckily, it was found later, but it never should have happened. I stayed in other hotels in the same area for the same price and they were amazing. This place was overpriced, poorly maintained and overall stressful.
- 4/5
The location is excellent. Very close to Times Square but not right on the main street so noise is minimal. Front desk staff was professional and helpful. Despite not being a 'big name' hotel it felt safe and comfortable. It's an older building that could use some freshening up. My room was clean and the bed was comfy but everything was very 'economy'. Scratchy towels, cheap amenities, slightly broken bedside lamp etc.
- 4/5
it was good
- 5/5
Amazing customer service! Needed extra things for the room and they were there in minutes! They go above and beyond! Will definitely stay here again!! They let us stay after because our flight was delayed! They were amazing!!
- 5/5
Great!
- 4/5
Best location!!! Room itself was dated and small but it was clean and fine for our needs. Staff was helpful and allowed early check in for $25 and late checkout plus baggage holding.
- 4/5
Four stars for location! We spent a long weekend in NYC seeing shows and this location was perfect! Shows were close and plenty of food options. Staff not overly friendly or helpful when checking in or waiting in lobby. Room was clean with plenty of towels. Older vintage furniture in room with safe in closet. Second floor was very noisy at night with room facing road.
- 5/5
This is my 2nd visit & wont be my last, great hotel, perfect location, older hotel but very clean, comfy bed & the staff are exceptional, loved everything about my stay.
- 5/5
Room was clean, staff were friendly, felt safe and was close to the broadway shows!
- 5/5
The staff was amazing
- 4/5
Very clean and nice room, with friendly staff.
- 3/5
The room was clean and no frills. The water temperature and pressure in the bathroom was variable at best, I could never quite get it to work appropriately for a shower.
- 4/5
Clean room. Matthew at front desk was friendly and hospitable. We definitely miss Joey Sasso. He was a staple there and made my family feel welcomed every day.
- 5/5
Our room was clean, they made our bed every day, staff was nice and polite I had no issues! It was wonderful. Amazing location and I would definitely stay here again
- 4/5
Friendly staff
- 4/5
Great location and very spacious rooms. Can sometimes hear other guests in the hall if they aren’t being considered of volume. Staff helpful and room made to daily and fresh towels.
- 5/5
The room was spotless and very comfortable.
- 3/5
Cheap, not very nice hotel near Times Square. Fine if you just need a bed to sleep on.
- 4/5
Great
- 5/5
Room was clean. The staff of the front desk were very helpful
- 5/5
Rooms are basic but have everything you need and cleaners came every morning to give us fresh towels, and made the bed etc.
- 5/5
The rooms were lovely, Victorian in feel and clean. The staff was exceptional! I will stay again.
- 4/5
Good nice and clean room, nice place to stay at, close to everything.
- 4/5
The stay was good. My complaint was that the room was cold, and there aren’t enough outlets to plug things in. It is an older hotel but was very clean.
- 3/5
No microwave, ice bucket, coffee pot, or fridge unfortunately. Our tv remote didn’t work either so we couldn’t watch a lot of tv
- 5/5
The room was clean! The bed was comfortable. Heater worked fast. The staff were so kind to these Floridians during Winter Storm Fern! We would absolutely stay again. You cannot beat this location!!!
- 5/5
Great location! Close to Times Square. Clean and friendly staff.
- 5/5

Everything was great! Awesome location close to everything, staff was great!
- 5/5
Cozy, clean, and warm
- 5/5
Overall experience great! The staff was amazing, room cleaned, great location to Times Square and food. Definitely would stay again.
- 3/5
Location is great, we had king size bed and it was very comfortable! TV needs to be upgraded and room needs some remodelling! Overall we were satisfied for that price.
- 4/5
Very central in New York. It was a little older of a hotel but we really only went to sleep and it was perfect for that. The staff was extremely friendly and very helpful.
- 2/5
Very old hotel with no perks. Only good thing was location. No usable mirror in room other than small vanity mirror in bathroom. Very hard to find plugs, they have no refrigerators in the room. The elevators were very slow and beds were more like a trampoline. Will not stay here again.
- 5/5
Clean room, courteous and helpful staff
- 4/5
The location and the price were excellent. The room was nice, but no wifi and some of the outlets were dead. But the location was great.
- 5/5
Hotel St. James is a charming historic hotel right in the heart of Manhattan. Its old-world character gives it a classic New York feel, and the location is unbeatable—just steps from Times Square and the theater district. Clean, comfortable rooms and friendly staff make it a great choice for anyone wanting to experience NYC with convenience and character.
- 5/5
Very affordable, recently updated, very close to Times Square. No food or vending in the hotel, but shops and restaurants next door. Will stay here again.
- 5/5
Great location and clean rooms! Fourth Stay at Hotel St James and will return
- 5/5
The rooms need to be updated, the tv was small. But the rooms were clean and the staff was great.
- 3/5
However, decor needs up-dating and a few minor repairs, like the bathroom sink. Also, a larger hot water tank is needed since I only got lukewarm water in the shower and it got cooler as I passed the 5 minute mark. Walls are thin. Got a good rate so i would almost give it 4 stars
- 5/5
The room was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and conveniently located and the staff were friendly!
- 5/5
Everything fine. This is what I call a good European hotel. Nothing fancy. Just clean , safe place to sleep very close to Times Square and theatre district. A deli next store. A good pub next to deli. Good breakfast menu.
- 3/5
Housekeeping was good daily. The mini refrigerator didn’t work
- 5/5
Great place
- 5/5
A great place to stay! Rooms are slightly dated but extremely well kept and homey.
- 3/5
It was winter so air condition not an issue.
- 4/5
No temp control in room and pipes made loud noise during the night.
- 5/5
yes everything was close to walk by
- 4/5
Was in a perf
- 5/5
It’s an old hotel, but it’s grossly underrated.
- 3/5
Cleaning staff was great Sink and toilet did not work well Sink drained slowly and toilet needed repairs to flush Front staff barely acknowledge us after check in
- 5/5
Great, clean, no frills hotel! Extremelyckean &
- 5/5
Clean room, excellent location.
- 5/5
Very clean, friendly staff, well located for theater/midtown
- 5/5
This hotel could not have been more amazing! The location, friendly staff, clean room and everything about it was fantastic. I will definitely be back!!
- 5/5
Let's start by discussing the location of this hotel. It is just one block away from Times Square, making it a very convenient choice if you're planning to stay in the heart of Manhattan’s busiest area. Regarding the hotel itself, it offers a classic, no-frills ambiance with a charming vintage and antique feel. The hotel is very clean, and what truly stands out is the staff. During my stay, I interacted with several members of the front desk team, and they were all exceptionally friendly, courteous, and eager to assist in any way they could. We had a wonderful experience here.
- 5/5
Excellent front desk staff
- 4/5
Very very clean and prompt response when needed something. However the beds are very hard. That’s my only negative regarding the hotel. Will probably stay here again.
- 5/5
Great location!! Comfy beds, great water pressure, quiet room. First time to NYC in a long time. This location was awesome for being a tourist for 3 days. Coffee shop directly out the front door. This hotel was great for us.
- 1/5
I did not stay here. I tried to change my stay dates and I could not. Expedia recommended this with hotel or my trip as a costs savings add on to my flight. It included the wrong dates. I tried to reschedule or cancel within minutes of booking and this was denied. I will not use Expedia for any thing in the future. The hotel was very inflexible.
- 5/5
The room was very clean. The staff was very nice. It was all in all a nice stay!
- 5/5
Welcoming staff. Rooms are simple but clean. Super central
- 4/5
I always stay here. It's basic, clean, does the job.
- 4/5
Friendly staff!
- 4/5
Good staff and clean simple room
- 5/5
Perfect location clean rooms and friendly staff
- 2/5
The room was not as pictured or promised at check in.
- 4/5
Room was clean and spacious (for NYC) for our group of 3. Staff was pleasant and efficient. No amenities though - not even a source of hot water for breakfast drinks. I called front desk when wifi didn't work and was told no one else had complained. There is wifi in the hallway, just not in the rooms on floor 12.
- 4/5
Staff in lobby was courteous. Beautiful lobby. Room was not completely clean. Water in shower cut off and on about 8 times during a shower. Room temp was warm, with no way to regulate. However, still pleased with the room considering location and cost.
- 5/5
Great place
- 5/5
Perfect location. huge room for a NYC hotel with comfortable beds. great spot to explore the theatre district
- 4/5
Room was quiet and clean. It was convenient after getting off a very late flight and allowed us to get the rest we needed. However, the room next to us had a pipe break and we were without cold water, so there was no shower and no flushing toilets not sure what happened as we were never told, but it was worth it for a quick nap.
- 1/5
The room was beat up and uncomfortable. The bed was mushy and barely supported. It was radiator heat and the it was sealed up when we got there. The radiator was too small for the room so the room was cold while the radiator clanged and whistled all night. The bathroom was also freezing and the water wasn’t hot enough. The water pressure came and went while it was on to the point the water would just shut off. The staff wasn’t friendly and barely acknowledged us coming and going even with shift changes.
- 5/5
We loved our stay at Hotel St. James and the location was perfect for our trip itinerary! The room was clean and spacious, and staff were friendly during our brief interactions. I will definitely stay here again and am looking forward to our next trip.
- 5/5
Clean and quiet rooms. Bryant park, Rockefeller, Times Square, and theatre district all very close and walkable.
- 4/5
Very convenient to Times Square
- 4/5
No breakfast options however it is within walking distance of many great places to grab some
- 4.5/5
The bed was super comfortable and loved the location. It was close to subways and walking distance to most things we wanted to do on our trip. We wish the room would have a mini fridge to keep drinks in for when we were in the room, but we were close enough that we could walk to walgreens and grab drinks, they just were hot.
- 5/5
The staff was amazing - room kept clean and perfect location for the price.
- 1/5
Very old and outdated
- 4/5
Good location, friendly staff. Bed was a bit too firm, and the room was quite warm at all times.
- 5/5
Older hotel but very clean and a half block from Time Square.
- 3/5
Staff were great. The room was mediocre for the cost. Pretty barebones amenities in the room and a shower that would fully stop running whenever someone else in the hotel ran water.
- 5/5
Perfect place to stay in Times Square! Great staff great building very quiet! Was not expecting that lol
- 4/5
Very good location for shops, eating and site seeing. Good transport links as a very central location. I would definitely stay there again.
- 3/5
good
- 5/5
The heat wasn’t working that great
- 4/5
The hotel covers everything needed and doesnt try and trick you into extra charges. The room has wifi and a nice bathroom, they also let you leave bags there. However it is a bit loud cause of its location and the heating, the room is also a bit cold. Our group was walking all day so the noise wasnt an issue.
- 5/5
Cozy and very clean love it
- 5/5
great
- 5/5
Short Stay But Nice
- 2/5
Most of these faults could have been overlooked had there been more care dedicated to our stay.
- 3/5
Widows were really dirty, the beds were falling apart and the AC did not work.
