Reviews
The hotel is generally well-liked for its location and friendly staff, but many guests find the rooms to be small and noisy. The hotel's restaurant and rooftop bar are popular, but some guests feel the hotel is overpriced for the size and quality of the rooms.
- Great location
- Friendly staff
- Small, noisy rooms
- Overpriced for quality
- 5/5
The staff here at Freehand is the best. Chill but very caring and helpful. So impressed!
- 4/5
Great property but the AC in our room on the 17th floor was weak at best. The AC left the room hot, 80F, during the day.
- 5/5
The location is perfect! Staff always helpful.
- 1/5
We loved our four night stay at The Freehand and will hopefully return. Great location, well maintained, attractive atmosphere, helpful staff, fun bars. I recommend choosing the slightly larger rooms with a modest sitting area.
- 5/5
The staff is so so nice! They really make the place. Wonderful Check in with MR Argentina and all his associates thank you
- 5/5
I loved our room it was small as is expected in New York, but it was perfect. Great location, friendly staff, and loved the stay.
- 5/5
I love the Freehand hotels. The room was a good size for being in NYC! For the two of us, we had plenty of room. The Broken Shaker bar was such a fun place to rest after a long day of exploring. Staff was friendly and I always felt safe in and around my hotel!
- 2/5
This is a hotel that bills itself as having a fun and retro vibe. Both are true but where they miss the mark is the staff is atrocious. Totally disinterested (reception) and outright rude/outrageous (staff). Save for Brandon, the doorman/bellhop. He is a superstar, and was beyond helpful, friendly and empathetic when a staffmember horribly treated 25 guests by kicking them out of the mezz sitting room "to clear the room for a private event" as rudely and without notice as could be. People were told to "GET OUT" and couldn't finish their coffee or email and had to retire to the small lobby area. Horrible. Rooms are spartan and while servicable for one, a disaster for a couple. Bathroom has NO space to put anything but one toothbrush. No drawers in the room. No shelf for toiletry bag in the bathroom. Sheets/pillows bad, room dirty, outside noisy. At nearly $500/nt, this was shameful. And I've stayed in dozens of hotels in NYC.
- 1/5
Our original room had a known air conditioning issue. A technician told us the TV had to be removed for the AC to work properly, meaning we had to choose between air conditioning and a television. The hotel’s solution was to suggest that I cancel my reservation while traveling to New York with my two daughters. We were eventually moved to another room, which also had a malfunctioning AC and only extremely hot water, with no cold water available even from the bathroom sink. What was most disappointing was the way the situation was handled. The manager refused to address the issue directly, and we were met with excuses rather than solutions throughout our stay. I would not stay here again.
- 3.5/5
Central location, near public transport, convenience shops, restaurants & laundry nearby. Safe. Friendly front desk. Broken aircon, hotel changed room for us after two days, new room’s aircon was good but toilet flush was weak. Need to flush 3-5 times each time to properly clear. Super thin walls, can hear noise from neighbors and people along corridor loudly. Very very small bathroom. Shower gel ran out but was never replaced.
- 4/5
Convenient, comfortable, creative and clean
- 5/5
Quirky, friendly staff on reception. Our room was well equipped, bed was comfortable, air conditioning worked well. Good shower. Good choice of eating places. Good coffee from coffee shop, Nothing to dislike.
- 5/5
Great location for access to Gramercy Park and surrounding neighborhoods
- 4/5
Great location. The rooftop bar seemed like fun but we enjoyed smaller bar downstairs. Entrance area and reception area was fine but could have a better more welcoming layout.
- 4/5
Very good

- 2/5
location and rooftop I have booked a room with city view and got a room with a wall view. The room was so small that you could not even open a suitcase. and so dark you could hardly see anything. After speaking to reception we got breakfast vouchers and 200$ refund which i have never received. and the breakfast voucher was only for porridge. i have requested the refund several times but still have not received it.
- 4/5
Very good
- 4/5
The reception staff and porters were friendly and super helpful! I didn’t explore much of the hotel and wanted to see the rooftop bar but it was open at times where I was out exploring New York. The bed was super comfortable and I liked the fact my room was super high up so I got a great view! The window in my bedroom was really dirty and the window area was super dusty, a lot of the tops of furniture was dusty and the room could do with a fresh bit of paint and refurbishment
- 4/5
The room was nice, but the lights flicker since they are LED on none LED dimmers. The A/C was a loud window unit which allowed the loud noises of Manhattan to end the room all night. Was very unrestful “sleep”.

Cool old hotel with cozy lobby, great attached resturant and cool rooftop club. Small rooms, but good overall value
- 4.5/5
A very cool NY vibe in a great location. Being on the number 6 /Lexington line made travel by subway easy. The bars were chilled with a great night time view on the rooftop. Easy on the eye decor in the bedroom and comfy bed , with a good cleaning service. Bathroom was small actually tiny but efficient , did love the style though
- 5/5
Convenient, great staff, comfortable room - perfect!
- 3.5/5
Gym, location Fridge size, lack of coffee maker in room
- 4/5
Comfortable, great location, welcoming, friendly and responsive staff. Room for three was a bit too small, yet I guess it is only natural in NYC.
- 5/5
Three restaurants within the location. Rooftop that opens on Tuesdays after 2pm. Try to book ur room away from the street view or you will hear everything especially if you are a light sleeper. Overall our stay was good and staff was friendly.
- 5/5
Small rooms but good for the price and NY. The location was good and area felt safe.
- 5/5
Great hotel at a great location. Rooms are a bit small, but that’s to be expected in Manhattan. Staff are super friendly and helpful. No coffee makers in the rooms :-). Nice hotel
- 5/5
Loved it
- 4/5
Nice stay and enjoyed the rooftop bar
- 5/5
Only issue is the window AC units are not insulated so the sounds on the streets are super loud. Otherwise the hotel was great, gym was nice.
- 5/5
Great location. Kind & welcoming staff.

- 4.5/5
Great vibe and location - room was also very comfortable for a NYC hotel. Great value. All good
- 5/5
Our room was clean, nicely arranged and tastefully decorated. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great. The entire staff, desk clerks, cleaning staff, restaurant personnel were outgoing and helpful and created a welcoming environment. We took the 6 train many times during our stay, and the hotel is located very close to the subway. Great location. We got coffee snd breakfast every morning at Smile to Go, we enjoyed happy hour drinks on the roof at Broken Shaker, and we ate at Patsy’s one evening. Our dining and drinking experiences were very enjoyable, and it’s so convenient having so many options available on the property itself.
- 4/5
Location and staff Very noisy at the location. Construction outside was very loud
- 5/5
Cute and retro. Very comfortable and friendly staff. Great location
- 2.5/5
I like the location The rooms need some updating. The bathroom specifically needs new hardware for the shower and sink. The toilet took several attempts to flush properly. The bed was lopsided on one side. My checkout experience was very disappointing. I went to the front desk and requested a late check-out of 3 pm and was told that it would be possible at an added cost. When I asked if I could at least have an extra hour for a 1 pm check-out at no cost, the receptionist told me it would be possible. I went back to my room and had a call 5 minutes later from the manager asking me to please exit the room at 12 pm because the hotel was too busy to accommodate my request. This was obviously not the case since the hotel was mostly empty for the majority of my stay. I will not be staying at Freehand again!
- 5/5
Loved the hotel's decor, rooftop bar. We had a triple and it was perfect!!
- 5/5
Our stay was great. We came during the week so didn’t experience any loud music from the bar. The hotel was clean although there was some dust on the window ledge and the carpet was cut too short to meet the doorway. Our room was on the 6th floor so there was some street noise, but I looked at it as cool ambiance noise. House keeping came by everyday so our bed was made and room was vacuumed, they also took our dirty towels and replaced them with new ones. I would stay here again. It was in a very good area. We were originally at chealse moxy, but had to switch hotels and thankfully we did because this area is way better. Good walk to lots of vintage shops, Penn station, and lots of other attractions. This isn’t a luxury hotel so keep that in mind but it had the vibes and for me I felt the room was cozy and spacious enough for me and my husband.
- 3/5
This place has the bones but needs some updating. Mattress was uncomfortable, hooks in bathroom were missing. Several outlets didn't work. But staff was nice and location was convenient. And everything was clean!
- 5/5
We love the Freehand as our regular home away from home. This location and hotel has it all, from morning coffee to a restaurant and 2 bars for evening fun! Central Mid-town location right next to Grammercy means we are steps from everything we are hoping to visit.
- 5/5
It was a great hotel, staff and bar was so fab!
- 3/5
However, the AC was a window unit that clearly needed maintenance. It was super loud and would kick into high, whiney gear every 15 mins or so. I had to turn it to the fan setting so I could sleep a hot sweaty sleep. Shower also smelled like sewer, which is just not awesome after you've worked all day and do not have the energy to talk to the front desk. Then you leave early the next morning and don't have time to report to the front desk. Overall, not a great experience.
- 3/5
The staff was excellent and attentive. Nice location and great bars. The only issue we had was that our room smelled musty and needs updated.
- 5/5
Great rooftop, friendly staff, hip vibes.
- 4/5
The location was great, near the subway and a short walk from Murray Hill and Gramercy. Very clean and staff was friendly though not as forthcoming with information about the hotel when we checked in as we would have hoped. The front desk was responsive with help about getting to the subway, etc. We were disappointed that the restaurant in the hotel had closed, so we did not have a good in-hotel option. And, the rooftop bar we were looking forward to was closed the days we stayed (Sunday and Monday). There were a few other minor complaints--the gym was not well ventilated and smelled musty, the bathroom was very small and the towels were sparse and not in great shape, and there was no waste basket in the room. Also, the A/C was an window unit that let outside noise in (sirens, etc). Overall, a good option for the value and location. We might try another hotel the next time we visit NYC.
- 1/5
It was awful. Plumbing literally doesn’t work and they care about gouging you with hidden fees for water and wifi.
- 5/5
Trendy hotel with nice touches. Feels timeless. Love the cafe and elevator. Room was small but ok… just didn’t love the bed position but wasn’t a deal breaker.
- 5/5
Great location. Excellent staff. Convenient for Baruch and walking to Union Square
- 3/5
Staff were very friendly, A/C did not work
- 5/5
I’ve been to New York City nine times and this is my first time seeing it the free hand I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend.
- 3/5
Staff was amazing! I love the atmosphere of this hotel. I didn’t like that the ac/heat unit did not work. Not even a fan working. The room was hot and funky because of zero air circulation. Window worked so that helped. Hair drier also didn’t work.
- 5/5
clean room great staff
- 5/5
Excellent stay! Perfect location, attentive & friendly staff, had everything we needed for a comfortable fabulous stay. Definitely a great experience
- 5/5
Staff was amazingly friendly, nice and helpful!

LIKED CORNER ROOM
- 1/5
The hallway carpets are dirty. So are the room carpets. There was a janky window a/c installed with some flimsy plastic sheeting around it; even in the 16th floor it was like sleeping with the window wide open and incredibly loud. No kettle or coffee maker. The bathroom was minute. The window blinds had been hung by a novice and were scratched and missing pulls. The room doors are thin - you can hear people’s conversations as you walk through the halls. I checked out the next morning and stayed elsewhere.
- 4/5
The location is great and the room was very nice, more space than the last hotel we stayed in. Some things were a little wonky (outlets that didn't work, refrigerator too small to be useful, not great wifi reception). Also, it would have been nice to have had a light breakfast provided, or at least coffee. The staff was very courteous and very helpful!
- 5/5
This is my second time staying at the Freehand. I love this boutique hotel’s artsy, cozy vibe. Staff is great too.
- 3/5
Not included
- 4/5
Unless you wake before the sun comes up, the water in the shower is only lukewarm. My thermostat was broken, stuck on full blast cold. When I called maintenance, he came to my room look at it, pushed a few buttons, couldn't get it to work, then just told me to use the small electric space-heater to offset the a/c.
- 3/5
Clean, the AC worked well — generally fine for a short stay, but the room was pretty underwhelming. All the lights flickers, I was given a room by the elevators so fairly loud, low water pressure, dirty windows so it was hard to enjoy the view (although, there barely was one)
- 5/5
great service
- 4/5
Great staff and location. Front side rooms on lower floors can be loud. Small things that I noted - windows are super dirty to a point where they block daylight. Room size was good.
- 1/5
The central AC was broken so they had to install a window unit that was extremely loud at night. Had another reservation in the future that I have now cancelled. The staff, restaurant and location were nice.
- 5/5
This hotel has small things that make a big difference in comfort and sleep, like windows you can open for some fresh air and air conditioning that works well but is quiet. The staff was nice too and the lobby was lovely.
- 4/5
Decent shower but smaller bathroom, ample towels. No in room amenities - not even water glasses, which feels quite stingy. Older building and fittings means there is a fair bit of noise - either from the street, aircon units if you are facing a light well (very dark) or from hallways. Staff helpful when needed.
- 3/5
Overall, the stay was acceptable, but it didn’t quite live up to a 4-star standard. The property felt somewhat dated, with dim lighting and signs that it could benefit from better upkeep. The bed was soft and comfortable, which was a plus. However, noise was an issue, the rooftop HVAC system was quite loud, and the windows didn’t seal properly, allowing constant outside noise to come through.
- 3/5
The Freehand is a bare bones hotel with no amenities. Nice bars and cafe, however, which were fun. The rooms are very basic and didn’t have a space for a toiletries bag, just a small ledge (mine fell into the toilet and ruined all my makeup and medications). No coffee machine or mini bar but there was a small fridge. No shelves or drawers for clothes. I stayed here because it was around the corner from the conference I was working, and it’s pretty cheap compared to other nyc hotels. Also the front desk staff were super rude and gruff. The bartenders were nice.
- 5/5
Easy check in and out. Very good location. Nice rooms. Would definitely go back
- 4/5
Convenient location. Safe. Had a good night sleep. Clean room, bed and bathroom. Service staff was nice; “Hero” (bellmen) was extra nice.
- 5/5
Windows I. Room are thin so lots of street noise but otherwise great stay!
- 5/5
Great place! Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Great hotel, love the location and fun vibe
- 5/5
Great
- 3/5
no drinking cup in the room, they give you a bottle of water to refill but the water cooler was empty and or operated at a trickle. Long line in mornings to pay for a coffee or breakfast. Staff was too "cool" to be helpful.
- 5/5
Staff were attentive & paid attention to details. Great stay!

The clea
- 5/5
Room was very clean, staff really helpful, and the location was fabulous.
- 4/5
Love this hotel and the staff. Room was sadly less clean than when I would have stayed in the past
- 5/5
Best hotel in NYC period
- 5/5
This hotel was very clean and staff was friendly. It was in a great location to visit our son.
- 5/5
Really cool vibe, great location!
- 4/5
Wonderful hotel with an exceptionally nice and helpful staff. My only criticisms are that there was no coffee maker in the room (I know lots of hotels are eliminating coffee makers but I don’t like that), no washcloths with the towels (washing flannels to our friends from the UK), and no glasses in the room. I also prefer a sit down breakfast place with wait staff rather than a place with a line where you have to pick up your order and carry it yourself. And I’m an old guy. Can’t we just get bacon and eggs with toast? Does it have to be a breakfast burrito, et al? But I like the place and have already recommended it to others.
- 1/5
I’ve stayed here probably 20 times. This time was very different. Window AC unit installed in our room, leaving the window semi unsealed to the street where construction was happening.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel and friendly staff.
- 4/5
Comfortable, hip, well-situated hotel in Nomad/Kips Bay. Reasonably priced. Easy one block walk to subway. Fine restaurants nearby, including excellent breakfast cafe next door. Rooftop bar nice, but check to see if access restricted due to private parties. Dinner restaurant next door changed from New Mexican to Italian. Will return.
- 5/5
Great location
- 4/5
Clean room
- 5/5
Clean room nice staff and food options are located in the hotel
- 5/5
This staff was very helpful in getting my mother set up in her room and throughout our stay
- 5/5
Third time staying here. First time was great, second time bad, but wanted to give them another chance. This time was good. Solid hotel. Nothing too fancy, but the room was nice, bed is comfortable and it’s a relatively convenient location for getting around the city. The extra fees for amenities aren’t worth it and feels like a money grab, otherwise fine.
- 5/5
I loved the stairway and my room was modern and immaculate

- 5/5
Nice, good sized room with lots of amenities-perfect location!
- 4/5
AC didn’t work in our room :/ Lobby is loud and restaurant often has long wait so be advised
- 3/5
Clean and comfortable room. A lot of street noise and window to the street is beyond filthy on the outside. Also, the running water was all very hot, i.e., no cold water from any of the faucets. They did provide a bottle of water as a solution .
- 4/5
Pleasant surprise, close to the Flatiron Building and to the 23rd St subway Station.
- 4/5
Hotel was beautiful and great location - the rooms were a little worn down but clean!
- 5/5
Personally, I need more gluten-free selections but what little the breakfast room had was good. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. I didn't try the bar. I had a comfortable room with good light. I'd like to stay at the Freehand again.
- 4/5
Bathroom is quite small, but all toiletries and towels stocked for you. There is a fridge, but again very small. Sufficient for a couple water bottles. Overall nice place for the price in NYC.
- 5/5
Cool and hip.
- 4/5
Bathroom is extremely small
- 5/5
Good features, good food available on site.
- 2/5
Fridge didn’t work, bathroom had bugs, lights barely worked
- 3/5
Fridge was incredibly small even for a 1 night stay & no microwave
- 5/5
Very convenient location. Breakfast/lunch restaurant downstairs was good and made getting coffee easy. Staff was friendly. Rooms were comfortable. Grateful for the space for our suitcases.
- 3/5
Not planning on returning back to freehand. This is usually the hotel I get booked for work travel and we also have clients stay here as well. Used to really like it but the last visit wasn’t great. The guy at the front desk was annoyed at our arrival and you could tell. Not sure if that was why we got a smaller room. I’m all about interacting with another human, but if they’re going to be grumbly about checking people in then I’d rather just have a check in kiosk than feel uncomfortable. First time I’ve ever been asked for my ID and my partners ID (that wasn't the main issue just flagging) Cleanliness was okay but you can see the wear and tear in the rooms, beds were not as comfortable and reminder for those that need coffee, freehand doesn’t have coffee makers in the room, but they do remind you they have a coffee shop downstairs. Also would add that shower was lukewarm and ran cold after a few minutes. Understood it’s an older building, but we were in a rush so there wasn’t time to ask about it. For the price point, you’re better off staying elsewhere. Will be recommending we switch to a different hotel for work related travel.
- 5/5
Had a wonderful stay. The staff was AMAZING, room was unique and fun! WOULD STAY AGAIN!
- 5/5
Clean room. Consistent. Great staff.
- 5/5
Clean room, eclectic decor and super friendly staff. We’ll be back!
- 5/5
This was a nice place to stay and in a good location. There is a small coffee shop/restaurant downstairs. I didn’t realize they had as much food as they did. Some vegan and GF too. I was bummed the rooftop chocolate bar was closed when I was there especially because the bar on the mezzanine level didn’t have Reisling Wine nor milk for Kahlua and milk. It was full to capacity when I was there with a lot of young people. The bed was comfortable and housekeeping did a fantastic job every day. I do wish the room had a hot pot for water. The black out shades were amazing and enabled me to sleep despite the noisy city.
- 2/5
When we arrived, our air conditioning was not working, room was 76F. We told the front desk and they told us they would take care of it while we were out. We explored the city and came back after a Broadway show at 11PM and fond our room was 85F because they put a space heater in it. We called the desk and told them and they told us they would send someone up. We asked for a new room instead and they told us they were fully booked, but when we looked online there were still rooms available. After 2 calls and 2 visits to the front desk, someone came up to the room an hour later and installed a very rickety window unit. It worked ok for the night. The shower drain was also very slow so water overflowed and flooded the rest of the bathroom. I could excuse some of these things if the staff had actually seemed like they cared and that any of this was urgent to them, but they did not. They did move us to a new room the next night and it was much better. So, I guess it is just the luck of the draw.
- 2/5
I travel a lot and stay in a range of hotels. Freehand is overpriced and over rated. Staff were pretty cold and unfriendly, aside from the guys who help with the bags. No complimentary tea or coffee, just overpriced weak rubbish from the in house cafe. Rooms are dated, which is allegedly part of the charm, but pretty unclean as others have said. Doesn’t feel like a boutique/design forward experience, wish I’d stayed somewhere else. Gym was poorly equipped. Location is great, but that’s about the only good part. Horrible experience
- 5/5
Staff are very friendly! Easy area to get around NY with easy access to subway
- 5/5
The cutest boutique experience! Great location and staff went above and beyond!
- 4/5
Staff is super friendly and helpful.
- 3/5
The restaurants and bars were fine.
- 4/5
Great hotel, conveniently located. Enjoyed the breakfast area, the fairly large room for NYC at this price. However the noise level from the street on the 4th floor is not one for people with a light sleep…Still a good bargain as we paid $275 a night for a corner room.
- 3/5
Hidden fees upon check in. Walls are thin, lots of loud people in the hallway
- 4/5
Bathroom needs a bigger sink and toilet
- 3/5
The room was clean and neat. Property was decorated nicely. Unfortunately, the heat was broken and had a portable plug in and heard a lot of street noise
- 3/5
Heat didn’t work at all, we had to request space heater which I guess is fine. Bathrooms are really small, sink is the height for a toddler, the shower curtains are short, water gets everywhere! Tv barely works, only certain channels 1-3 at most. It doesn’t allow for screen cast, but other than that, it was just ok.
- 5/5
My room was clean and housekeeping was very meticulous in their upkeep of the room. The front desk staff was also very professional. It’s convenient to have the coffee shop and restaurants downstairs, as well. The main downsides were the lack of a gym in the hotel and the sometimes loud street noise coming from 23rd street. If you can, ask for a room that doesn’t face 23rd unless you are a very deep sleeper!
- 5/5
Staff is great and location is easy to get around town.
- 5/5
The check in staff was courteous. The room was clean and had cool decor.
- 4/5
The bathroom sink was too tiny to be useful and the shower pressure too light to wash my long hair. One day there was only tempid water. But the location was good.
- 5/5
Great vibe

Great location, beautiful hotel. Italian restaurant jus opened next door, will def stay again.

Hotel is charming and staff are wonderful. Lighting in room is poor and some lights were broken.
- 2/5
So many basics missing: lotion in the room, drinking water cups in the room, etc. Would not stay again
- 5/5
We very much so enjoyed our stay at the freehand hotel. The staff are excellent people and extremely welcoming and supportive. They will give you great directions and help you at a 10 out of 10 level. The restaurant is fantastic with excellent food and amazing staff. They make good drinks and very good pizza. The hours can become a little bit tricky at the restaurant because coming back from an event I would like to enjoy a drink. . The hours can become a little bit tricky at the restaurant because coming back from event I would like to enjoy a drink or more food so they should maybe just keep it open a little bit longer. Overall this hotel experience was at six out of 10 it does. It needs a lot better value for the amount of money that I am paying I would just like to re-say it was a totally fine experience with great people however it was very loud at night time. It’s not ideal spot to stay. It is quieter than other regions. However, it’s extremely loud and the room the windows were a little bit dirty and so is the floor and it smelled very bad and it was here in the drain. That is why I read the freehand hotel in New York City is six out of 10.
- 5/5
The staff are really great, low stress, willing to help with any issues, Loves our time in NYC will definitely return!
- 5/5
Front desk staff was so friendly and accommodating. Can’t wait to come back. Also the water pressure in the shower was incredible!!!
- 5/5
Efficient room but great work/social area and excellent bar and coffee spot.
- 4/5
Buena ubicacion y segura,
- 4/5
Very clean and cozy… great people vibe… very convenient and centric location.
- 5/5
Very cool hotel and unique
- 5/5
Fun place to stay in NYC.
- 4/5
Clean, quiet, stylish. Comfortable mattress, rain shower head, well thought out layout and furnishings in the room. Very pretty common areas.
- 5/5
All was fine.
- 3/5
Uncomfortable mattress. Also, got charged $120 for “facility fees”? That was for “three bottles of water, internet, etc”.
- 5/5
A spacious room and shower in Manhattan?? Had me there, but clean facility, friendly staff, voucher for the restaurant/bar, happy hour and free breakfast make this place a 5/5. I'll be back.
- 5/5
Nice room. Incredibly helpful staff
- 4/5
Nice hotel. Great location. Comfortable and quiet room. Good bar and convenient cafe for breakfast.
- 5/5
Such a cute hotel with so much charm. The bathroom is tiny, but doable. Great location, bed was comfortable and our triple room was a bit spacious for NYC, rooftop bar had great views of the city. We will stay here again!
- 5/5
Staff is great, convenient location. The rooms were very good and clean, my only note is the bathroom was a little bit small.
- 4/5
This is a very quirky property. I’m not sure what it was before, but someone told us it’s a converted youth hostel. A few oddities: all of the furniture in the room is Lilliputian-sized. We joked it had been taken from a Kindergarten. Our heating/air conditioning didn’t work properly, one night it just never came on. The night it did work, there was a very bright green light on the thermostat, which, given its placement, was quite disturbing for sleeping. The shower is interesting - great water pressure, but I couldn’t find a reasonable temperature, it was always scalding hot. And the light above the shower was possessed - it went on and off randomly. There is virtually nowhere to put toiletries in the bathroom - they provide a stool under the sink, but stack it with your towels. One positive is the lovely bar and lounge area on the second floor - although again, the furniture is very small and low to the ground.

Friendly service, clean rooms and convenient location to all attractions.
- 5/5
we had an awesome time at the Freehand. Close to restaurants, shops, and many attractions and the Underground railway.
- 3/5
It's a bit tired and worn.
- 5/5
My friends and I stayed in the two bunk room and were pleasantly surprised by this hotel for the price. Staff was friendly and helpful, the room was spacious enough for 4 girls, and the beds were surprisingly comfy. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone coming to the city!
- 5/5
Reasonable price (for Manhattan) for a corner room. Nice location near 6 train. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel in a quiet (for Manhattan) area. The room was spacious and cozy. Really enjoyed the cafe in the hotel, and 2nd floor bar and lounge area. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
We have finally found home away from home in this property. Everything was excellent, room cleanliness, staff and food! Very accessible too.
- 3/5
The overall environment of the hotel is nice, and the room is okay. However, the room was incredibly dry—I woke up with a severe sore throat and painful eyes, which completely ruined my sleep. On top of that, the front desk staff handling the check-in had a not good attitude and were very rude.
- 5/5
Rooms are small but very clean.
- 4/5
We loved our stay at Freehand - truly a great, budget-conscious way to stay in Manhattan. The room was small, but clean, and the amenities were unfussy but with a great vibe. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.
- 4/5
Check-in, however, felt a bit frosty. It almost seemed as though the person behind the desk was the one being inconvenienced, rather than welcoming a guest. A warmer greeting would have made a much better first impression, as it set a slightly flat tone at the start. The hotel itself is very casual, so if you’re looking for an upscale, traditional luxury experience, this may not be the right fit. That said, the building is beautiful and the overall vibe is young and hip. Despite the less-than-warm welcome, I would definitely stay again for the location and the generous room size alone.
- 5/5
I liked the atmosphere of the hotel and its location. Bathroom sink is very small. There’s barely any space inside the small refrigerator and I could only fit small water bottles in there after taking out the racks. Other than that, I’m pleased with my stay there. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. I had a room in the inside part of the building, and it was very quiet at night.
- 5/5
a lean room
- 5/5
Amazing unique vibe. Super friendly staff. Amazing price for great location and great hotel.
- 4/5
The staff was great, got an early check in, the room was a bit small but it is NYC. Location is great, easy access to subway, restaurants, etc. Enjoyed my stay
- 5/5
Older building but nicely appointed
- 4/5
Good location
- 5/5
This stay was exactly as expected. Clean quiet place to sleep each night. Great location near subways and food choices. Safe and easy to walk to other neighborhoods. We enjoyed using the lounge area one afternoon to take a little break and not be in our room. Price seemed fair for room quality and location.
- 5/5
The halls were kind of dirty, found a nasty towel tumbleweeding through the hall. Other than that it was a great stay. Loved the body wash, shampoo and conditioner
- 5/5
Absolutely clean with friendly staff! We couldn’t back for anything better!
- 5/5
Clean room
- 5/5
Clean room, good location, highly recommend
- 5/5
A very friendly hotel with excellent hospitality
- 5/5
Very comfortable, great location
- 5/5
Beautiful space and accommodating staff! Javier, the buff dude at the front desk, went above and beyond in arranging our room situation and making sure we had all the amenities we needed.
- 5/5
I hope the hotel was very well situated. The room was fine and actually very good value for the price.
- 4/5
Comfy bed, great location, bit noisy at night time but overall a good option
- 5/5
Great staff
- 5/5
Fantastic staff - we had a few hiccups with our room but every staff member we interacted with was amazing - Jermaine was a standout, what a nice guy. The room was spacious for NYC and the bed was comfortable. We will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
this hotel worked great for us for a quick weekend trip - great staff at the front desk - room was tiny (but it’s NYC) bed was comfortable, great value for the location
- 3/5
The location is excellent. Our king bed was comfortable. The room was pretty dirty with dust and rubbish under the bed. The staff were fairly apathetic. Our room was really dark and tiny. The common room on level 2 is excellent but we didn’t realise it was there until we were leaving as the staff didn’t tell us anything about the hotel when we checked in
- 4/5
The room was clean and the staff was nice and effective.
- 5/5
The room was fantastic, clean and warm (it was a super cold weekend!) The hair dryer didn't worked and I called to request another and they rushed it right up to me. The staff is wonderful.
- 5/5
Checkin was so friendly, loved the room
- 5/5
Clean and staff was very friendly. Great room!
- 3/5
yes staff nice..but the rooms had no blankets [it was snowing for 3 days and freezing that night] and the general areas were also unheated and not really fit to hang out. In fact the resturant was so cold for breakfast most people chose not to eat there.
- 3/5
may be time to switch
- 4/5
My stay was great for the most part. Our room has a faulty window with allowed too much of the cold air from outside. The hotel did their best to mitigate that. Other than that our stay was great.
- 5/5
I absolutely adore this hotel and its amazing staff! Javier, at the front desk, is a sweetheart! The staff makes you feel like they really care about your experience there. It's my favorite place to stay in NYC.
- 3/5
Large and bright room, but the heating was not great so it was cold. Having been to the freehand in 2019 the hotel is decidedly
- 5/5
loved the room
- 5/5
For the price, the room is good for a night or two friendly staff
- 5/5
I loved my stay! First, the staff were so so helpful and kind. The hotel is so beautiful in the art deco style and definitely romanticized my experience. The room was larger than I expected for a hotel room in NYC and very home-y feeling. I loved the access to the bar (heads up that drinks are pretty pricey but happy hour prices are reasonable). The cafe in the morning was a great place to work from and the food and drinks were yummy and relatively reasonably priced if you’re looking to sit and have your meal there. I’d love to see it in the warmer weather when I can check out the rooftop bar as it was closed during my stay. But I was between Freehand and a chain hotel of comparable price, and I’m so happy I chose Freehand. I’d love to stay again.
- 5/5
The room was cozy and well designed to make the best use of space. The shower had incredible water pressure, which felt great after a long day of sightseeing in this arctic winter we are having.

- 5/5
The gym was great.
- 5/5
Best staff, friendly and courteous.
- 3/5
A bit disappointed. We liked it the first time but this time, it was run down! Resort fee again and for what? They offered absolutely nothing , not even an in house restaurant. Called several times to ask if there was any construction going on and no one said, restaurant is closed and being renovated. Ill pass on this again.

- 5/5
Great Location, cleanness and amenities. Will definitely stay there again in nyc.
- 5/5
great staff, clean hotel, great location.
- 5/5
Such a cool, beautiful Hotel!
- 5/5
Great stay, cute rooms and love the dimmed lighting. Will definitely consider a future stay!
- 3/5
Lot of noise from
- 3/5
My stay mostly lived up to expectations. The value and location were great. It was very cold when I was there and the heating couldn’t keep up so it was uncomfortably cold.
- 4/5
Personal was awesome, the location was great for where I needed to be, the only issue is that the Heater stoped working, the good thing they brought us a portable and worked just fine. The only thing I would recommend them is to get better sound proof windows, that amount of noise from outside is too much, but the rest it was just a great stayed.
- 4/5
Clean, safe and trendy hotel. No complaints.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, great room.
- 5/5
Amenities. Good hot water. Nice gym with small weights! Fabulous art work. Good coffee shop.
- 5/5
Great location. Room was very clean and moderately sized for the city!
- 5/5
Clean, quiet room reasonably priced.
- 5/5
So fun- wonderful hospitality
- 4/5
Nice place, great location. Liked their decor/vibe and was spacious and better-priced for NYC. Main drawbacks were the street noise was loud, which isn’t always the case in a NYC hotel, and the water pressure was horrible and not very hot.
- 5/5
Clean room, with wardrobe, great location
- 5/5
The room was very nice and clean. There is always someone in the lobby, so it feels very safe even at night. Immaculate vibes. We will be back <3
- 5/5
Beautifully designed hotel. Comfortable and cozy rooms and the front desk staff was on point!
- 5/5
My recent stay at the Freehand New York was absolutely exceptional and I cannot recommend it enough. This hotel perfectly captures that quintessential New York charm with a modern, artistic twist. It's a true gem in the heart of Manhattan.
- 5/5
Fabulous stay! The staff was fantastic - super friendly and accessible. Loved the design, although the wooden walls in the bathroom don't lend themselves to easy cleaning. It's hard to get in the nooks and crannies of the ridges really well. I noticed that in a few other areas of the hotel as well. But overall loved our stay and would absolutely come again.
- 4/5
Have stayed multiple times at the Freehand. Room is snug, as is the bathroom, but compensates with a comfy bed, good linens, excellent shower with quality products. Always clean. Great location. Can’t beat the price.
- 5/5
Lovely staff, great location, fun bars at the hotel
- 5/5
Nice location and clean
- 5/5
The staff and hotel were fantastic. But
- 5/5
Excellent stay - location, service, quality and spaciousness was amazing. I’ve been making several trips to NY per year for the last 12 years, and this was one of my favorite hotels I’ve stayed in here. Only very minor issue was that our room was cold in the evenings. We had a thermostat and turned the temp up to 73 for over 24 hrs, but it stayed chilly.
- 5/5
The room was clean and staff was great. Very welcoming and helpful
- 5/5
This was a great hotel to stay. The room was fairly large with a king bed (which isn’t usual for NYC). Location was great and staff was super friendly! We also had 2 dogs traveling with us and the facility was great and very dog friendly.
- 5/5
Easy clean and consistent
- 3/5
I was there for 6 nights not a bad place and was clean, however there was no heating AT ALL…. I talked to the staff and they were nice about it and said they would send an engineer to look at it but no one ever came. I was freezing every single night which made it horrible to be in the room.
- 2/5
Carpet was falling apart. Elevators were gross and smelled bad. Dusty room and windows. Front desk was not very nice- did not tell me about any of the amenities which is weird since you’re paying a $40 daily amenity fee- for what free water bottles?
- 5/5
Really liked the hotel - was our second stay. Clean room, polite and helpful staff, nice amenities. Appreciated kettle provided when I asked about hot water for tea. Overall excellent!
- 3/5
This was my 4th stay at the Freehand and certainly not my last as it is reasonably priced and has the basic essentials (comfy bed, clean and great water pressure). The rooms are very dark with dark lighting - almost impossible to put on makeup for a night out. The building is
- 5/5
Clean room - helpful staff
- 5/5
I have read lots of reviews complaining about the noise, come on folks it’s Manhattan! I always travel with ear plugs so it didn’t bother me one bit.
- 5/5
Clean room, great location. Hotel itself has everything you need, a breakfast place, a nice bar, lounge, rooftop bar etc.
- 5/5
No breakfast included
- 5/5
Tip, the taxis in the area have a set fee to JFK airport so if you need a ride to the airport, skip uber and ask the bell guys for a taxi.
- 5/5
Spotless
- 5/5
staff
- 5/5
Good service and fast checking in, i will come back here when i see NY.
- 5/5
room old but clean
- 1/5
Not a nice bed. Loud room by the elevator. And I see we were to receive breakfast. We never did. Not an ideal stay.
- 5/5
Staff was outstanding. Love the character of the building. Reminds me of the Roosevelt in LA. Great location. Great views. Price was perfect(was there during New Years) all others were price way higher. Would stay again.
- 3/5
Staff were nice. I had to ask for a kettle. No tea or coffee. Fridge size rediculous.
- 5/5
The staff was outstanding and the room was quiet and clean!
- 4/5
Clean room, nice layout.
- 5/5
We always love this hotel for its amazing location. It’s a block from the 6 train and provides quick access to some of our favorite places in the city! Staff are always kind and check in and out is always a breeze.
- 3/5
Some staff are quite rude and dismissive. Only this Asian man that worked at the front desk occasionally was hospitable.
- 4/5
Quick check in/check out process and good location central to New York. Rooms small and carpets could do with a refresh.
- 5/5
Very kind staff, clean rooms and lounges, and convenient location!
- 5/5
Clean room, amazing staff, and great hotel!
- 4/5
The staff was very helpful and incredibly friendly! 10 out of 10 for service. Great location as well
- 5/5
Cool place
- 5/5
The staff, the room, the rooftop bar, the soap... All amazing!!! I will definitely be back.
- 5/5
Everything was great at the hotel and services only one this in the page said you have a Free to go breakfast idk what that means but they don’t have complementary breakfast at all but the cafe is really good and nice food.
- 5/5
Tight bathroom but the shower was fantastic with the rain head and ample size. I loved the robes. The staff was friendly and always available. A little more storage would have been nice for clothes since we stayed for a week. I prefer to get my clothes off the floor in a suitcase. A folding luggage rack would be a nice benefit to add to the rooms
- 5/5
Staff were perfect. Every time we needed something, they took care of it promptly and well. Very courteous too!
- 5/5
Great rooms and awesome staff. Location is spot on as well
- 3/5
The rooms are very bare bones and the bathrooms tiny. The price is good but if looking for something luxe or even nice, this is not the place to stay. Location was good and staff friendly.
- 5/5
Loved everything about the Freehand. Would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Everything was great except that my floor smelled like cigarettes
- 5/5
Exceptional staff, great coffee bar and roof top bar
- 5/5
Very friendly staff…close to transportation.. you can walk to Time Square.. very cute and clean
- 4/5
The place had some charm, but the air conditioning did not work properly in our room. Every time we got back at the end of the day the room was at 80 degrees. The clothes steamer did not work either, and the mini fridge is absolutely too small.
- 4/5
Staff was awesome. Hotel was great.
- 3/5
The staff is so friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Clean room the staff was very helpful the location was great.
- 5/5
Very good location! Very clean and very nice room! Staff deserves A++++++!
- 3/5
Negatives: Room was very dark as windows overlooked an enclosed area. Lights constantly flickered. Hallways very dingy. Hotel bars not opened as advertised. Overall like everything in New York, it is vastly overpriced for what it is.
- 5/5
I lost my hat and both Daniel and Omar were incredibly sweet to help me find it!! Would definitely return!
- 5/5
Room was cozy and clean, everyone was extremely pleasant and made our stay so enjoyable.
- 5/5
The best! Hands down, took exceptional care of me.
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Good hotel
- 1/5
The staff specifically asked for a physical card and the attitude was harsh
- 1/5
It was cold all night there was not heating and when I asked they told me they’re going to sent somebody which nobody showed up I honestly didn’t like there . We forgot our AirPod and we went back they said it wasn’t there however we were hundred % sure it was there 🙁
- 4/5
Nice king corner room. Worth the money. Nice bars. Info we weren't aware that the restaurant was closed for renovations. May want to check before booking. It's supposed to be first class.
- 1/5
Room was very small, lighting was poor, and everything was run down.
- 5/5
Was perfect for me
- 4/5
Staff were very quick to address concern about heat and lack of soap in the shower. It was odd that all three guests had to show ID. Not sure why we had to pay a resort fee.
- 3/5
My room was clean but it lacked some things I consider basic. no lotion or microwave and room was very cold even with temp set to 80, it just did not get warm. staff super nice/friendly and bar made great drinks. too cold for rooftop bar. never ate any food at this hotel just got coffee which was nice and hot. location is great, easy to get where we needed to go. fridge is super small and i thought i was booking a double bed room after we arrived I was told no rooms have 2 queen beds-got close to my daughter this trip!
- 3/5
Our 2nd room there was several minor faults in the toom that i expect to nit be there for the type of hotel. A broken dimmer switch, burnt toile seat lid, broken slats on the blinds. And the lights were still dingy dark and poorly lit up. Staff were friendly and hotel clean and tidy..
- 3/5
They slapped a 240$ “service fee” for 6 nights (40$ a day) without telling me that before hand. Great customer service otherwise, the guys in the lobby are really cool and helpful people. some issues with the hotel was it was below 30° outside and our window was broken so the room was freezing and never came to fix it. If youre not an early riser, you get a free alarm from the cleaning service beginning to clean around 8am, letting doors slam behind them and bumping walls. Its a decent location. Average of a 20min subway ride anywhere uptown but youre in soho and close to grenwhich so theres alot of great stuff there. The fitness center on site was nice to have. The brokenshaker is a great rooftop bar with reasonable prices, and the breakfast spot downstairs was really good.
- 1/5
The hotel was absolutely terrible. I checked in on my birthday and someone sent me cupcakes, the refrigerator in the room did not work and the cupcakes were spoiled. The heat in my room did not work the whole night - the thermostat showed the room was 40 degrees. The hotel staff brought a space heater but it got so bad I had to leave the hotel in. the middle of the night. My room was also right outside the elevator and was so loud the entire time. HORRIBLE stay. I checked out early and they told me they would refund me.
- 4/5
Room was spacious and staff was friendly.
- 5/5
Very convenient location, cool vibe, would def stay again
- 5/5
This is a beautiful hotel with clean, comfortable rooms and friendly, helpful staff. Would definitely stay here again.
- 1/5
Staff was friendly, but for the love of God, do not let them put you on the 17th floor. Out room shook from the bar above us until 12, or 1 depending on the day. It was so loud, especially for the person on the bunk bed, mere feet away from a dance club. Main light was flickering so it was unusable, room was cold even after adjusting temperature.
- 2/5
Not good rooms
- 4/5
Good size rooms and in a great location. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Friendly hotel
- 4/5
Our thermostat got stuck in standby mode one night and we just requested an extra blanket rather than worrying about having them come in and fix it. In the morning, it was reset and working again. The public spaces were nice, the gym was pretty nice. I loved the vibe in the rooftop bar. The queen room itself was small but cozy. Not ideal if you have two large suitcases (which we had), as there's little floor space and nowhere to put much of anything away. The bathroom was really nice, shower pressure was good, and the way the furniture was set up was thoughtful, given how tiny the room is. The lights in the bathroom flickered constantly, but it's an old building, what can you expect? I think the only thing that lacked in decor were the hallways to the rooms. A bit dim and felt a bit like an old apartment building rather than a nice boutique hotel. No real complaints that would keep me from coming back. It was convenient and central. it had a nice breakfast/lunch restaurant attached. Coffee was great in the morning. Cocktails at the rooftop bar were tasty. I would definitely tell friends and family to stay here!
- 2/5
The air conditioning was broken and I was given a space heater which short circuited power to the room in the middle of freezing weather. No discount was offered despite the room amenities not being as advertised or paid for.
- 5/5
Comfortable room with portable room heater to make up for drafty windows. Awesome hot shower! Great service at front desk with check-in and storing luggage on day of departure. Convenient to Gramercy, Flatiron, Madison Square Park, Stuy town, LES áreas. Easy walk across town to Chelsea & Hudson Yards.
- 4/5
2) No dressers for clothing was a bummer. Everything had to stay in my suitcase, which isnt ideal. 3) toilet paper was backwards.
- 5/5
Great room, location, cool lobby and loved the fitness room. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
We loved our stay so much!! The only thing we would suggest to make the stay better is that they put one more light in the room that is bright - we love the aesthetic vibe so much but it was tough to see certain outfits and things while getting ready because it was so dark and didn’t get much brighter.
- 4/5
Clean room (but tiny), lighting was very limited in the room....very dark. Great for sleeping...but putting on makeup was a challenge!
- 5/5
Courteous staff, amenities, nice room.
- 3/5
There was no heat in our room (didn’t realize that the thermostat didn’t work till morning where we found a space heater in the corner of the room. Rooms are very blah and the bathroom was extremely small. I understand this is NYC during the holidays, but for more than $500 it was just ok.
- 4/5
Staff was friendly. Place is well kept, housekeeping also helpful. Only thing I did not care for was not being to control the thermostat. The room was cold when we arrived and had to get help from front desk to get it changed. This was only a minor inconvenience. Everything else was great!
- 5/5
Great stay, super helpful staff
- 5/5
Location was great and staff was very friendly. On the weekends the bars are a little loud.
- 5/5
Was a Great experience!
- 4/5
The staff was really courteous and helpful and the public space charming. The rooms are simple but ample, the exception being the sink which is small to the point that it's difficult to use. It's an old building, so climate control was tough (it was December), but the staff provided a space heater that absolutely made up the difference. It's a good hotel overall and I'd stay again assuming activities are in the area.
- 4/5
Great staff. Very dark room.
- 4/5
Great staff and location.
- 3/5
Rooms were small and cold. Not freat value for money. Decent though overall and staff v friendly.
- 4/5
Hero at the front door was the man! So kind, helpful, and fun.
- 3/5
The hotel is nice, clean, and well located. I booked a king room (advertised as 250 sq ft) and I couldn’t even open my suitcase it was so small. The hotel did not change my room and gave me back the taxes and fees only as compensation.
- 5/5
The room was large for Manhattan, the staff were friendly, professional, and helpful, I location is convenient to excellent restaurants and lovely walks,
- 2/5
Lobby, elevators, halls very dim Bathroom lighting worse than terrible Sheets had a weird smell. Not dirty, but definitely stale Location just ok Zero sound-proofing, from outside or inner hallways
- 5/5
Clean room, quiet. Lovely staff, great stay!
- 4/5
rooms are tiny and dark!
- 5/5
Always great!
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful and kind. Rooms were clean and well prepped. Overall a great stay and a perfect location to walk anywhere you may want to go. Close to a station in case you wanted to get around the city. Would love to stay here again.
- 5/5
The room was very user friendly and comfortable. Well-designed and a great shower. LOVED having Smile To Go in the building, and the location is fantastic. Desk staff was helpful and the whole experience was a great one.
- 5/5
Great location, great staff. Have stayed here before and will definitely be back.
- 5/5
Great staff!
- 5/5
Great room and friendly staff
- 4/5
Perfect location, great bar and coffee shop!
- 4/5
Clean room, spacious for Manhattan, good value, staff were excellent.
- 5/5
The staff was very accomodating, and the rooms were always clean.
- 5/5
Great location
- 4/5
The room was good.. it could use a bit more storage specially since its meant for 4 people it can get crowded and I think there's room for some drawers. But overall the stay was really good..staff very kind and the location of the hotel is perfect.
- 5/5
Clean room and good amenities
- 3/5
Good location, friendly helpful staff. Most of the outlets in the room didn’t work. Very small room. Sleeps4 but can’t imagine 4 adults sharing the space. Almost nowhere to put stuff down or away. Rooms desperately need shelves, bureau, hooks.
- 3/5
Great boutique hotel. I stay there often. They need to replace the eletric outlet. They are all worn and didn’t charge my eletronics
- 5/5
Staff was excellent, very responsive and were always very helpful. Hero helped us with all our bags and loaded our car for us when we left. Great stay in a great location.
- 5/5
Staff was excellent, so helpful & kind. My daughter & I stayed in the 3's company room & it was perfect for us & her disabled cat (Oats) who travelled with us. They LOVE pets at Freehand. Would definitely stay again, it’s a fun spot.
- 4/5
Easy check in. Quiet, off the beat and path
- 5/5
Everything was perfect! Loved the coffee shop. King room was spacious and location was AMAZING!
- 4/5
Fair pricing for a great location. They don’t have valet parking but there are a bunch of garages in the area. Small rooms but beautifully designed, clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly. Great stay!
- 1/5
Trash hotel. Heating was broken in the rooms and they kept on renting the rooms for the same price, but without heat. When we complained they offered us a drink ticket. Absolute garbage. We moved to another hotel after two nights without heat
- 5/5
Room was fine. Brandon the bellman was GREAT. Hip place with bar etc.
- 5/5
Room was great!
- 5/5
Really good
- 5/5
The staff were really nice and welcoming! I would definitely stay there again!
- 4/5
The shower is excellent. Staff is friendly.
- 5/5
Would love to have more access to the wonderfully cozy spaces, restaurants and bars in the building. The hotel room had all of the essential elements for a comfortable stay. Every nook and cranny had a handy storage space or a helpful plug. We will be back.
- 5/5
I didn’t try the breakfast but the hotel was lovely and clean. I loved the wood moldings.
- 4/5
Great location and in-hotel amenities. Room and bathroom were clean.
- 1/5
Management admitted that the problem is major and impacts a number of rooms, yet they continue to attempt to rent them out without warning the guests. I cut my stay short and moved hotels. The way I was treated was appalling, but the fact that they keep on doing it to other guests is what’s truly unacceptable. I’ve stayed at the Freehand in LA and it was great, but AVOID THIS ONE. It’s absolute garbage
- 4/5
The location and hotel were nice. Room was decent but bathroom fixtures were quite small
- 5/5
Great location
- 2/5
black mold was all over my room
- 1/5
Cockroaches, flickering lights,
- 5/5
This was a very nice boutique feeling hotel and a great value. The hotel was in an excellent location.
- 5/5
Loved it
- 5/5
We really enjoyed our stay here! I love the decor personality across the rooms. The service was fabulous. The area is in such a hotspot, very convenient to get around to wherever needed.
- 5/5
I give it 5 stars, even though the heat in the room didn't work as they were repairing it, and it affected a few rooms. They took care of us, though right away. Everyone was so nice, room was very clean and quiet. A great energy in the lobby. People say hi to each other in the elevator. The restaurant attached to the hotel for breakfast was amazing. We'd definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
Great comfy rooms. Love the decor
- 4/5
Staff were very friendly and helpful! The room was spotless every morning! I gave four stars instead of 5 because there was no heat in our room for the whole 3 nights we were there and sounded like the whole building was having issues as well. They did give us a space heater and extra blankets which was very nice. I would still recommend this hotel to anyone visiting NYC.
- 2/5
1. Hallways were extremely noisy - doors slamming at all times of the night 2. Toilet paper was gas station quality 3. A/C unit made a loud buzzer sound randomly at night once the heat hit the programmed temperature - loud enough to wake me up 4. Overall value just felt lacking for a $700 stay
- 3/5
Bathroom incredibly small even by NYC standards. Worn and dated. Bed was comfortable. Room was clean.
- 4/5
Didn’t know about breakfast menu
- 5/5
The room was great, on site cafe was convenient for morning coffee. Neighborhood was also very convenient. Staff was helpful.
- 5/5
It was a perfect work accommodation, but it was the staff and the feeling of warm professionalism of all the staff that will make me come back for work or play!
- 5/5
Great clean room
- 5/5
Very cute, comfy bed, old school New York rather than modern white box rooms.
- 5/5
Really nice reply rooms. A bargain for what it is. Bohemian vibe. Work it.
- 5/5
Thank you!
- 4/5
Nice hotel. Fairly priced. Great restaurant and bar!
- 1/5
i was so excited to stay here for the first time! i booked two rooms over a month in advance for my birthday. but i never got the chance. when we arrived, the agent at the front desk refused to check us in, look at our reservation number, or speak with us any further than directing us to take a seat and wait for the manager. he claimed that our reservation had been canceled. that was not true but for some reason, he insisted and when the manager finally appeared, he was also extremely rude and insisted i needed to "take it up with hotels.com" he would not hear anything i had to say. this hotel basically made an error, blamed it on me and then continued to dig their heels in. many hours later after i had already booked rooms at a different hotel and tried to decompress so as not to spend my entire vacation fuming about being treated so cruelly for no reason, the manager called me and apologized and acknowledged that the hotel had made an error. too little too late.
- 5/5
The room was spotless, and the staff was great, the breakfast options were fine.
- 5/5
Clean good sized room for NYC, Kind staff & beautiful Hotel!
- 3/5
The bathroom smaller than NYC standard, especially the very tiny sink. No common bathroom items provided (i.e. shower cap or q-tips, etc). Eating options were limited as cafe closes early, restaurant was indefinitely closed and bar and rooftop open late in the day and are closed on Sunday & Mondays. The biggest thing is that it is extremely noisy, so not the place for you if you want a quiet night sleep.
- 4/5
We did not get. breakfast included in our stay.
- 3/5
No breakfast provided. Not even a coffee pot in the room. Saw 2 roaches in the bathroom. The housekeeper was very good—the best thing about staying here tho we DID have to ask for washcloths our last night.
- 3/5
Oh, the world of hipster hotels. My corner room was fine once I moved to the quieter part of the building on 22nd St. (vs the noise on 23rd). But be prepared for a lack of basic amenities. No room service, no mini bar and not even a coffee maker in the room. Groovy decor but there is no detail to service at the Freehand. Just another hipster hotel that doesn't really cater to its guests.
- 5/5
Very clean and comfortable room, friendly staff, great location Though bathroom very small its layout was well thought out and was nicely renovated.
- 5/5
Safe location. Friendly staff. Cute decor.
- 4/5
Check-in and parking were relatively easy (the parking garage is self-park and about a block away). We were charged two unexplained charges, one for $120+ and one for $150+, but both were refunded after I inquired about them at the front desk, so no problem. The gym was nice, and the Smile To Go had nice options for us (we're vegetarian) and friendly service. Maid service was excellent.
- 5/5
Perfect affordable NYC hotel
- 3/5
Walls are so thin externally- we could hear every single thing going on in the street all night. Bathroom is teeny tiny but there was space in the room for luggage which was nice. Bed was comfy and check in was on time! A good place for a quick stay.
- 2/5
No vallet parking. The Commodore restaurant was permanently closed although their website lists it as a facility. The room was dark, carpet was ripped and frayed with holes in it. The air-conditioning didn't work at all. The bathroom sink was ridiculously small. The bed was very lumpy. The hallways were dark and humid. The hotel was conveniently located to where we neede to be in Gramercy and the east village. That was the only positive. Will never stay here again.
- 5/5
Courteous staff and clean room
- 5/5
neat place to stay
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Room was a great size for NYC. Clean, great location, and everything we needed in the room!
- 4/5
It was fine. The ladder needs to be positioned closer to the bunk. Shelves added to the bathroom. Heat was tooo high. Very convenient location to The Grammercy Theater.
- 5/5
Great staff and location
- 3/5
Hotel is fine for one night. It is overall a little run down. Hotel restaurant was used as luggage storage and was closed for the evening without any notice.
- 5/5
Convenient, comfortable room Bar on 18th floor was good for a late snack but exceedingly noisy, very loud music, and unnecessarily dark.
- 5/5
Clean room, large bathroom, overall, great hotel, would stay again
- 5/5
Great location for us. A little on the noisy (street noise) side due to in window ac unit. Bathroom was clean and functional but SUPER small. Overall nice weekend visit.
- 5/5
A very cool hotel in excellent condition with great staff. Exceptionally well located.
- 4/5
The room was very noisy from heat pumps/HVAC outside. Lighting in the room was very dim.
- 5/5
Wonderful staff, location, and within walking distance of so much Manhattan has to offer!
- 3/5
Cleanliness was fine. Nothing over the top
- 2/5
Overpriced
- 5/5
Staff is amazing. Bathrooms are very small. Everything is very clean. Housekeeping is amazing
- 3/5
Its a cool and funky hotel but was not worth what I paid for it. Upon arrival I was told there were additional fees because I had paid through a third party. The room was basic at best and the lighting was terrible. It was really poorly lit . The restaurants and bars were not open on Sunday . They were pretty cool but I would expect them to be open to guests. I wouldnt stay here again. It was just OK.
- 4/5
Very dark in the room, even with all the lights on (and some were blinking like strobes, and some hard to turn on) - I could barely see to put on makeup. The refrigerator was so tiny - a total waste of space and energy. Better to put shelves in that space!
- 4/5
Didn’t see a bar. Staff was nice. Mattress was worn out and awful. Carpet in rooms is yucky. Paint needs a fresh up in the whole place.
- 1/5
And then I find out my account next year. He charged me more money from how much I make reservation online so this people they’re not honest with a customer. And also is not clean enough
- 4/5
Very comfortable beds, cool decorations, great location, and the rooftop bar with the view of the Chrysler Building was ::chef's kiss::
- 4/5
Cozy lobby aesthetic. Location is not too far from everything.
- 2/5
Air conditioner was an old and very noisy window unit.
- 1/5
The room was clean.
- 4/5
This is a very unique hotel that’s full of charm and character.
- 5/5
The overall experience was as expected. No issues at all and a pretty cool vintage style hotel. Would book again.
- 5/5
Great location and very clean.
- 4/5
Comfortable bed and clean.
- 4/5
Great location, cool art/decor.
- 5/5
Friendly and efficient staff All was Clean and charming Quiet and comfortable room
- 3/5
I didn’t stay there
- 5/5
Added an extra $40 a night that was not disclosed pre booking.
- 5/5
I will say that I had a staycation with me and my girlfriend’s and we hung out. We basically had to do a bunch of setting up for birthday parties birthday parties that we were doing in a local area so we needed a hotel room to stay at just set up and get things acquainted and move in and out when we need to somewhere close by where the parties will be given, and I must say that everything was obstacle we loved it, but we visited again. Yes we would, but for the price the central air was not working on the line, but that we were staying in, but once we call the front desk, they quickly had an AC brought up to the room and it was great after that
- 1/5
When you book this hotel from hotels.com with your card, they will send you another link for you to put your card info in and information. However they STILL want a hard copy card for the hold at the hotel. If you only have tap it won’t work because they aren’t allowed to use the Tap.
- 5/5
we loved our stay, we loved the breakfast. The next morning, staff was super nice and our room was clean, and we loved the vibe.
- 5/5
Wonderful ambiance. Clean and well appointed rooms. Fun rooftop bar.
- 5/5
Excellent in all ways!
- 5/5
Thank you
- 3/5
the bunk beds in the room were fine and worked well for the 3 of us. the bathroom was very small, but again to be expected in New York. the fridge in the room was so small you could not even fit a drink in there and close the door. we had to wedge the door closed with a shoe and the fridge did not stay cold. overall, i would not say it was a good value for the close to $1000 i paid for 2 nights. i would have preferred to know about the restaurant situation prior to booking. i did love the decor in the room and lobby though.
- 5/5
Amazing staff! Clean room!
- 4/5
I have a service dog and they tried to charge me a fee for the dog. I argued with the manager. When I checked in. He told me the fee would be waived. When I checked out the fee was added to my bill. I argued with a manager while I was checking out. Supposedly they refunded the fee but I won't know until I get my bill. Not service dog friendly
- 5/5
Clean room wonderful staff central location
- 4/5
Wall were too thin.
- 2/5
AC did not work
- 5/5
Water dispenser in the "Smile to Go" was not working or not filled, therefore getting water was very limited. Restaurants on site were also great, with amazing service!
- 5/5
Good location
- 5/5
It was easy to find, and the room was clean with a comfy bed. I enjoyed my stay!
- 2/5
the ac was extremely noisy, the hotel is dated, seems like I walked into 1975.
- 5/5
Perfect location; super helpful staff
- 5/5
I had such a pleasant experience! I will definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
Friendly staff, spacious and latest tech rooms and prime location
- 3/5
I’ve stayed here several times! Always loved it. My room was great. I was unaware the restaurant was no longer operating. That was a big miss for me. After long work days, I had expected to be able to come back for dinner at the adjoined restaurant. The desk person told me that fast food was up the street when I asked for recommendations…the next morning Smile cafe was still not open by 7:15am and there was a line of hotel guests waiting. The front desk staff was not helpful again. If the hotel depends on a different operating company to serve guests food and beverage, it would be great if they were trained to have adequate suggestions and back up plans. Maybe coffee in the lobby? At the very least.
- 5/5
Great location in Gramercy. Very walkable area with great dining options.
- 3/5
Don't book room 328 if you go to sleep before 1am. Really loud music blaring from hotel club until then.
- 3/5
Two star hotel at five star price.
- 5/5
Great staff. Awesome rooftop bar, but only open certain nights. Small NY rooms and bathrooms. Great location if you plan to use the subway - near major lines.
- 5/5
Great boutique hotel in an amazing location.
- 5/5
Loved the room, appreciated being able to check in early. F&B options were great as is the location.
- 2/5
We have stayed there several times. Room was much smaller bathroom you could hardly move. It had bed bugs and I am missing jewelry. Won’t stay there again!
- 5/5
Liked the roof top bar.
- 5/5
Amazing
- 5/5
Perfect location for visiting our daughter who lives in the Gramercy neighborhood. Our room was clean, comfortable, and surprisingly spacious. The housekeeping and front desk experiences were exceptional. We also really enjoyed the three on-site restaurant/bar options. We look forward to staying here again.
- 2/5
I would not recommend
- 3/5
The lobby was gorgeous, but I was really disappointed that both restaurants were not open while I was there. It was a main part of my deciding to stay there and the main restaurant was closed for an unknown reason. I was told Saturday I would have the opportunity to dine at the rooftop bar but when I went I was told their kitchen was closed due to a private event. Had I known both dining options were unavailable I would have chosen a different hotel
- 3/5
We stayed in the queen + bunk bed room for our family of 3. The way the bunk and ladder were set up proved very difficult for our daughter to get in and out of, so I took the bunk and my husband and daughter slept in the queen. Neither mattress was especially comfortable. The bunk under the mattress hadn’t been cleaned.
- 5/5
Shout out to the amazing Javier- but also to the incredibly nice team upstairs at the rooftop bar!
- 2/5
gross
- 5/5
Had a wonderful stay! The staff was accommodating, the room was clean, short walking distance to beautiful parts of the city, and the rooftop bar had a spectacular view!! Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in staying in Manhattan.
- 2/5
The room was very dim, with a blinking foyer light and dark bathroom. There was a bad smell from the toilet, and basic amenities were missing—no kettle, coffee machine, mugs, or even paper cups. One power outlet didn’t work, and the shower curtain didn’t cover the whole area, causing water to spill. No view at all. Overall, poorly maintained and not worth the stay.
- 5/5
I loved that my daughter and I were able to walk
- 5/5
This is my go to hotel when visiting my daughter. Great quality.
- 5/5
Very clean, great location.
- 5/5
The cleanliness of the property, staff, maintenance personnel are outstanding, respectful and professional. Omar, an attendant at the reception desk was kind enough to let us have breakfast vouchers. He was courteous, informative and kind. I’ll definitely keep this place in mind for any future trips to NYC!
- 4/5
Staff in concierge were not very helpful in arranging
- 3/5
Very noisy. Hotel was over-crowded and booked to the max. Long wait for the elevators and for breakfast in the morning. Hotel bar was extremely loud and jam packed. I walked out without ordering a drink because there were no seats and it was far too loud. Not a place you can have a quiet drink and conversation. Room was also noisy. I had a corner king room on the 5th floor and it was like I was sleeping in the middle of a highway. All night there were loud trucks and busses going by. Do your best to get a high floor room to avoid the street noise. It was relentless and I did not sleep at all. The room itself was nice and had excellent decor and was clean. The hotel itself is also nice with excellent decor. It's just the noise!
- 5/5
I was skeptical but the rooms were very clean and staff was friendly! They have a free purified water fountain but I would be sure to have a water bottle because they don’t provide any. Great location, super close to the a subway entrance. Can walk to time square!
- 4/5
Hotel guest must exit to street level to access roof top bar. Georgia room not accessible by elevator to arrive guests must use stairs, but both areas can exit by elevator. Quad rooms lack quad hooks for towels. Chose hotel for outlets in beds. 2 of 4 bed outlets did not function. Hotel unable to repair during stay and no credit to cost of room.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly and helpful staff, and clean and comfortable room!
- 4/5
The beds are spacious, comfortable, and clean. There were two small drawbacks, no streaming service on the tv and no ice unless the restaurant is open. Love that the floors are only available with room key for that floor. Which added to feeling safe. Also, most rooms have city views and at night are beautiful.
- 3/5
Yes
- 5/5
The staff was very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. The place was clean, welcoming, and comfortable. Our bedroom was cozy and offered all the amenities necessary to make our stay pleasant. Overall, we had a great experience.
- 5/5
It would be even better if breakfast was included
- 4/5
Great location in the Flatiron district making it near a lot of good dining options and attractions. Room was clean and comfortable although the bathroom was quite small. Bag check staff were super friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
The staff here have an INCREDIBLE vibe. So friendly, generous and helpful. Can’t recommend more. 7 stars
- 5/5
We stayed at Freehand NYC for 5 days in July. The room was comfortable and clean. The staff was helpful with toom service, luggage hold(even on the day of checkout) and giving recommendations. We all enjoyed our stay.
- 3/5
Pros: room was clean, staff was friendly and generally helpful, bed was comfortable. Cons: there are no bright bulbs in the entire hotel. Hallways are dark and drab, room was dark, bathroom was dark. One of the handles on the bunk fell off in my (teen) daughter’s hand and she fell while climbing down from the top bunk. The bathroom has no where to put ANYTHING. 2 hooks on the back of door for towels and that is it. No other hooks, no countertop, no shelf. For anyone who wants to do more than brush your teeth- it’s an issue. The “desk” in the room is so tiny- it’s hardly deep enough to set a laptop on. It’s too bad because with a a few changes it could be so much better!
- 5/5
I wasn't happy that there weren't any glasses in the room.
- 1/5
Flight cancelled but they charged me anyway
- 5/5
no complaints what so ever and the service was VERY accommodating and appreciated, the service went out of their way several times
- 3/5
Just okay, certainly not great in any regard. Shared spaces are cramped, not that clean, and a lot of things in rough shape
- 5/5
Loved this hotel! Room was very modern and well designed. The room was a bit small but was plenty of space for one person. For 2 people with large suitcases it could be tight but that's how it is in Manhattan! The hotel has a great location with a subway stop 1 block away and a fantastically walkable location. Overall it was a great value and I'd definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Great hotel, friendly and helpful staff. Nice amenities (restaurant, bars, breakfast/lunch). The only thing is the rooms are a little dark. Modern LED lightning would take care of that in a heartbeat.
- 5/5
it was great.
- 5/5
Really enjoyed my stay. Convenient location close to the subway.
- 4/5
Cool place . Rooms are tiny but good location
- 5/5
El mejor hotel the Manhattan buena ubicación excelente servicio y lo mejor buen precio vale la pena yo vengo a este hotel dos veces por año hace cinco años
- 3/5
Nice place and nice location. Only issue was $40/day additional fee for gym and baggage storage that was mandatory.
- 1/5
Horrible
- 5/5
Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It felt like they knew me.
- 5/5
Great!
- 5/5
Excellent location and cute decor
- 5/5
Great stay, great location, wonderful amenities
- 5/5
The room was a little small for two people, with the bed shoved up against the wall. That was not the case in previous experiences booked there.
- 3/5
Room was tiny but clean, and if nothing else, it encouraged you to get out and see the city. For one person, it was doable. The elevator was a bit strange. The on-site bars and restaurant were nice and staff were friendly. I guess my chief complaint would be the “resort” fee which seemed unnecessary considering the price of the items in the bars and restaurant and the fact that the room was so small with few amenities.
- 4/5
Loved the location, close to transport, and liked the quiet in the room (with windows closed/AC on)
- 2/5
The property was fine. The room was the issue. The first couple days we didn’t notice much about the room other than very dusty. It smelled a little musty but it’s an old building so that’s understandable. But after showing for a few days (there isn’t a working fan) we noticed when we would get back from our activities and the room would have a very strong mildew odor. The water from the shower is not draining properly and the steam is not ventilating anywhere. We had to close the bathroom door and stuff a towel under the door just to sleep. I thought about changing rooms but we only had one more night and I figured all the rooms were like this. Next time we’ll be doing an airbnb or staying somewhere else.
- 5/5
If the overall volume of background noise matters to you, then seriously consider this establishment. It really did not feel like an urban experience from the quiet. I'll have to ask them how they do it.
- 5/5
Great service, clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
I love this boutique hotel! Beautiful wood and creative furniture. Corner room, great views, polite staff. There was the right restaurants for the right time. Cozy elements..the robes and slippers..great shower!
- 5/5
The property is gorgeous, historical and old timey feel but also incredibly elegant and cool. We loved our stay and were greeted by kindness and calm which is all we can ask during a stay. My only complaint is that all the bars were listed to be open until 1 am or late and that was just not the case the night we went. We were quite disappointed as that was major part of our booking but the people at the front were kind to give us some recommendations on what to do next.
- 5/5
I would recommend this property
- 3/5
The hotel had a lot of extra fees for amenities that you have to pay for daily even if you don’t use them. Our AC in our room was broken for a full day and a half. The phone didn’t work and some of the light switches were working off and on. The bed wasn’t as comfy as we hoped. They resolved the air issue but it was all pretty inconvenient and not what I expected from a hotel of that caliber.
- 2/5
Windows filthy, room is gross, extremely overpriced.
- 5/5
Super cool place! It was well priced for the experience and the rooftop bar put it over the top!!
- 5/5
It was a great place to stay. I would recommend it for people who mostly want to do stuff outside of their hotel room since the room was so small. But the location was great, the building is beautiful, and I was comfortable in my single queen bed room. The cafe downstairs serves good food, too. Just be warned that, at least in my room, there were no drawers to store clothing, though there was a closet and a few hangers.
- 3/5
Poor internet. Unresponsive front desk. Could not charge meals in attached restaurants to room because they were own/ran by someone else creating an embarrassing moment my first morning. Cute property. Cute room. Find parking garage before you go.
- 5/5
It was great but AC didn’t get that cool bit it was 103 degrees
- 5/5
Room is quite small but they do 1 queen + single bed option, perfect for me and my parents stay for 2 nights in NYC.
- 2/5
The property needs to be fully renovated. The air conditioning is too loud and dated. The windows are thin, not sound proof and you hear everything on the street. The bathrooms are tiny, with sinks smaller than ones on airplanes.
- 5/5
We have a good time.
- 5/5
We stayed for four nights! We were impressed with the staff and building. It was our first time in NYC. It was so nice and would love to stay there again!
- 2/5
I got charged an additional $120 that was not advertised. This was on top of paying $200 per night! Very loud AC which caused sleep issues.
- 3/5
Hotel is dimly lit, both in the rooms and the hallways. You will not get a warm fuzzy feeling visiting this hotel.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly staff, and a great cool vibe around the hotel. Would stay again!
- 4/5
Easy check in, friendly desk staff. Felt very safe staying solo for business. Room was spotless. Would happily stay here again.
