Reviews
The hotel's location is consistently praised, being close to Times Square and other attractions. However, safety concerns for solo female travelers and cleanliness issues are frequently mentioned. The virtual check-in process is a mixed bag, with some guests finding it convenient and others struggling with it.

Affordability and Location Tv was broken, no coffee pot, no ironing board, wouldn't accommodate an early check in..

At bedtime, back at the hotel, when I looked closely at the bed for the first time, I realized that the sheet that's supposed to go under the blanket was actually over the blanket; and when I pulled the blanket open, I noticed that the bedsheet and pillow cases looked like someone had just used them to sleep in, and simply got up and straightened things out, unable to undo the stubborn wrinkles that were created in certain spots over a restless night. I bit my lip and thought, what the heck, this is kind of like getting under the blanket with a stranger, except with a time lag.

The location was perfect for walking to and from most Midtown Manhattan tourist sites, and also minimized the UBER fares to sites beyond normal walking distance. Its location on West 46th St (designated “Restaurant Row” by NYC) offers a myriad of eateries, nightclubs and cute bars). I understood that this property is a minimum cost lodging in one of the most expensive lodging cities in America. Thus, it offers only basic amenities. The room & bathroom are small but “enough”. The bed was comfy, climate control unit excellent, TV good. Towels good. On balance, a great way to save $$ if you don’t intend to hang out at the hotel. (But why would you do that, anyhow?)

An absolute filthy broken-down crackhead flop house. No towels. No toilet paper. Very dirty room. No closet. No hangers. Mix matched Salvation Army furniture. No curtains. Toilet didn’t flush.
- 3/5
Negative: no room service (cleaning, etc.) late check in, missing 2nd set of towels, no reaction until now (1 workday) to my email.

The place was 100% disgusting and hairs were everywhere. Gross! I had to stay because I had already reserved. The advertising is a total scam and the place smells like dried piss and a rats nest. The middle patio was always dirty with trash bags and a literal broken bed spring just leaning up against the wall. This place needs to get sued.

Located in a run-down area. No washcloths in bathroom, towels were thin and worn; poor shower curtain. High toilet seat was nice. No chairs or places to hang clothes. No replacement available or provided for inoperative TV Roku unit. Uneven floor. No natural light from windows. No cups in room. No bottled water available on site. Staff was friendly and did their best.

The location is near restaurants and walkable to Broadway, Time Square, and other tourist spots. The room was quiet and safe. There is an attendant at the front door at all times. This location is priced well, because it is average and suitable. It is clean. The furniture is older or lower quality than what you would find at a brand hotel. I was still comfortable.

Great location, quick walk to literally everything. Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms are very outdated, steps are small and uneven. The BIGGEST complaint is the wifi, it would work for 5 minutes then be out for hours, therefore the TV didnt work either. Room was clean but definitely had lots of cosmetic issues.

Location is good. I stayed 10 days. My first room was terrible I was moved and my 2nd room was spacious and quiet I was staying for 10 days. When I checked in i was given 1 ridiculous room On the ground floor between the front desk and with the door next to the stairs. I could hear everyone coming in and out. Not to mentioned that room is without windows neither ventilation and no closet space.... After complaining i finally got changed to a good room. If you are staying long don't expect housekeeping .....

the place seems like it was updated in the lobby. after walking up nasty flights of stairs, walking past stained walls we got to our room which wasn’t any better. our curtains were broken. bathroom wasn’t clean. and was so glad we didn’t have to use the shower during our one night stay. the staff kept the lobby door locked so we hoped and prayed after our late night watching a game we were able to get back in close to midnight. thankfully we were able to but i’d never ever recommend and hope they lower their prices to accommodate the dirty facility.

this was the only affordable option to be able to stay as close to Times Square and the theatre district by a long shot. We were able to walk everywhere and we were close to everything. The main value of this hotel was its location I wouldn't reccommend staying here for longer than a weekend if you want to be comfortable. The cleaning supply smell was so strong I had a headache for two days. The bathroom had hair in it that wasn't ours. The bed was old and springy but ok in a pinch. The room was missing baseboards and bathroom has to be re grouted but that wasn't an issue for us.

I stayed here for one night that i got stuck in NYC and I booked the room like at 10pm the same night. When I booked it on Expedia it said checkout time was 12pm noon. When I checked in he told me that checkout was at 11am. When he told me this i pulled out my phone with the receipt from Expedia where it says the checkout time is 12 and i told him can he not accommodate that because that’s how they have it listed on Expedia. And he looked at me like i was crazy or annoying and said no 11 am. So i asked if they offer late checkout and he goes yes for 50 dollars. So then i told him well since your forcing me to checkout earlier than the actual time i agreed to when booking the room for this price maybe you should give me 50 dollars off and I’ll leave at 11 am….NO After dealing with his obnoxious self i go up to the room take my shoes off and from walking around for 2 mins in the room with white socks the bottoms were now gray and covered in dirt. Like the floor was literally dirty when i got there. The shower had no curtain at all and the water just sprays all over the bathroom. Tv remote was missing in my room and i couldn’t even watch tv. I went down to ask for four extra towels. So that i could use some as floor mats because they have a worse shower setup than most public gyms. He tells me he only has three towels. Pretty sure he was lying and just being stingy. Also he was sleeping majority of his shift. I would have to wake him up by knocking extra loud to get back inside.

The location is great, there are lots of restaurants and is next to the subway station and Times Square. The staff is great The room was clean, but the shower was super moldy. You can clearly hear the people from the upper rooms walk even late at night and everyone shut the doors so loud that they wake you up at any hour. The A/C does not work very well and the noise wakes you up also. The bed is not comfortable at all. The price is high in comparison to what you get.

Fantastic little boutique hotel in NYC. It was a on a quiet, tree-lined street but just a short walk to Restaurant Row, the Theater District and Times Square. We were checked in immediately and the staff was so helpful and nice. Our room was cute, clean, and had a tv connected to multiple streaming services. I was a little nervous after seeing multiple poor reviews but I would stay here again in a heartbeat. It was a good value and close to everything without being in the center of the chaos. I have no mobility issues but it is an old NYC building and does not have an elevator.

Tv didn’t work. Upon arrival, I had to wait to be buzzed in. Ring camera not monitored

Breakfast is not an option, but the hotel is close to many restaurants. The air conditioner worked great, just a bit noisy. I adjusted the fan to "always on" so it wouldn't cycle on and off while I was trying to sleep. The bed was comfortable. The room included a refrigerator, TV, and hair dryer but not the advertised microwave oven. Convenient to theater district and restaurants. There were no weird smells. It had a 24-hour front desk so it was easy to check out at 4 or 5 a.m. if you had an early flight home. Decent shower and the bathroom floor seemed clean enough to walk into it barefoot. It was the least expensive room I could find within ten blocks of the theater district that had a private bathroom. Secure entrance (activated by front desk, 24 hours). No elevator; you might need to walk up two or three flights of steep narrow stairs (with your luggage, at least upon arrival) to get to your room. You can hear other people coming up and down the stairs when in your room. A little threadbare; the place could use new carpet and paint. Soap and towels were provided, but not any washcloths (bring your own). I was there four nights and there was no housekeeping while I was there, although the room was clean enough when I arrived. Plumbing needs a little help; the bathroom sink drained slowly and the toilet would run forever unless you manually moved the flush lever back into "off" position. You also need to hold the lever down a few seconds until the bowl finishes filling to the point that your "business" siphons down the drain; it's not just "depress and forget." (At least in 304.) No microwave in room. No deadbolt on room door (room key is like a house key, not a plastic card), so not recommended for safety-conscious or female or elderly travelers, as doors are pretty thin. Guest rooms are not accessible. Your room key doesn't operate the hotel entrance; everyone (guests and visitors) must buzz in each time they enter. I smashed a few insects (they were NOT bedbugs or cockroaches) in my room during my stay.

This was the worst experience I’ve ever had. I’m usually not picky and don’t care about amenities, I just want a clean place to lay my head at night. This place didn’t even have that. I booked a deluxe queen room, when I got there they put me in a room that looks like it used to be an employee break room, I walked right past it because the door had a plaque that said employee with the letters peeled off. It was directly accessible to the main lobby by a barn door. It was locked but obviously allows zero privacy. The moment we walked in it smelled horrible. The place was not cleaned, there was hair all over the mattress, trash still in the trash can, and the floors were so dirty. I immediately asked for a new room (which before we even walked in, the front desk person said they’d switch our room in the morning). That said at 11 am they could switch us. We spent the night and stayed in all morning for the switch and at 11 they said they were not ready. They said their cleaning lady had an emergency and the earliest they could do is 2 pm. We barely slept (the small was so bad and we could hear every noise from the lobby as if it was in our room) and we lost that whole morning of our vacation just waiting. We had to contact Expedia and they helped us get a new hotel.

The price was unbeatable, but there were a few drawbacks. We were locked outside the room for about 15 minutes because the lady couldn’t find the key. The code wouldn’t unlock the door, and it kept getting stuck. Inside, one of the windows was missing a curtain, so people could see right through it. The sheets looked unwashed. The worst part was that we had to kill a roach that was walking on top of the nightstand. The worst part was that we had to kill a roach that was walking on top of the nightstand. The bathroom door was so flimsy that we had to forcefully close it, and it would make a loud bang afterward. The shower also lacked curtains. Overall, the experience was quite unpleasant. 😭😭😭 However, if you’re not concerned about the amenities and simply need a place to sleep at a significantly lower cost compared to other hotels in the same area, then it’s not a bad option.

The only positive from this hotel is the location. The hotel does not look like advertised. The box spring on the bed was broke . They did not do any house keeping the whole time we were there. The outdoor patio space was filled with literal trash and old dirty mattresses. It’s actually not called 414 Hotel, which is deceiving because their website is nice. It is Hotel Merit. I cannot stress enough how different it was from the photos.

Check in was weird. Someone took a pic of my license with their phone. We had to take 3 big bags up 4 flights of stairs. There was a punch key lock that I did not trust. We did not arrive until almost midnight or I would have never stayed. We got up the next day and left. We were booked for another night but just left.

The hotel was acceptable - because all we really needed was a place to sleep or take a break between activities. The 414 location is great - a short walk to theatres, a wide range of coffe shops, restaurants, shopping, easy access to the subway. There are zero amenities: not even a bathmat, washcloth, or water glass. The sheets on the bed were clean, but threadbare. The courtyard between the entrance to the hotel and access to the rooms is piled high with construction debris and is probably a safety hazard. As two physically fit adults who had no intention of hanging out in the hotel, we didn’t really mind lugging our small bags across the courtyard and up 3 narrow flights of stairs - but that could be a problem for some. It would have been nice to have a coffee pot in the room or in the lobby. A website for the hotel advertises continental breakfast but no such thing was offered and I cant even imagine how or where it would be served. Who knows, maybe once they finish all the construction it will be a nice place to stay.

Staff very friendly, but not always available or alert to open the front door. Had to wait several times out in the cold.

upon out arrival, crookedly hung fixtures and door lock, room smelled of cleaning agents so strong that I had pretty nasty headache next day. opening window was not an option: Very noisy city block. Place reeks of borderline poverty yet is Unbelievably overpriced. Ratings oddly were high. Does not make sense…

Great location, within walking distance to so much good stuff. Check in / out was super easy and security staff are there 24 hrs to let you in/out of the building which gave us comfort. Rooms are a good size and beds are comfy. Would definitely stay here again!

Everything was okay except that they didn’t clean the room, replace towels, top up our toiletries all 3 nights that we were there. Additionally, something was broken in the room. We’re not sure what it was but it was part of the wall. Receptionists were nice though.

The desk staff were nice and polite, and the price was quite good for a place within easy walking distance to Broadway shows and Midtown jazz clubs. Clean room. Bed large but a bit warm for my taste. I had to check in a good bit later than I would have liked because of a lot of late check outs the night before. My tub did not have a shower curtain, they told me they were going to leave a shower curtain, but it was forgotten (although they were apologetic when I told them during checkout). Not a great stay, but I'd give them another chance because they seemed to want to be attentive, and maybe it was a bad/busy day.

Disgusting! You couldn't pay me to stay here again. The pictures are very old and do not represent the room at all. The towels haven't been changed in years and dirty with stains/hair. There was mold in the bathroom, the paint was falling off the walls. The furniture was beat up and dirty. The mattress was ok but surprised there wasn't bed bugs. If you care about cleanliness or general hygiene do not stay here. Front desk people were kind and that was the only pro.

Only Netflix works and only after desk person came up and showed us how to use it. Even though our rm was ready @ 1330 we had to wait until 1500 to ck in but by the time we were acknowledged it was almost 1600. Other friends in hotel rms not ready until @ 1700. One had rm given away and one had broken bed! It was clean and our bed was good for 1 night and shower was nice and hot but I won’t recommend nor will I be staying again.

We only had this hotel for one night as we had driven into the city just for a show. We checked in around 10pm, and we were told that the room we had actually booked was already occupied, and the only room left was a small not-air-conditioned bunk bed with a bathroom that smelled funny in a room between the front desk and staircase that I think must have been an office before being converted to an extra room. We were told that “all the rooms are the same” and were denied any kind of discount or partial refund, even though this room was nothing like the photos of the room we booked. Staff was nice. The local area had lots of restaurants. The room did what it needed to do (give us a place to sleep for just one night), but I will not be returning. I can’t speak for how nice the regular rooms are.

You get what you pay for at this property. Clean towels had hairs in them, property run down and there was an unpleasant odor. However, if you dont care about accommodations because you're just there to sleep a few hours, this is fine. Its very conbenient to Restaurant Row and all the shows as you can walk everywhere.

Unfortunately, I don't recommend anyone to go to this hotel. I paid almost 300 USD for two nights in a room of my choice. When I arrived at the hotel, the receptionist simply told me that they were undergoing renovations and the only room they had available for me was an office converted from a room with no conditions whatsoever, no air conditioning. It was close to midnight and I had no alternative and had to subject myself to the terrible conditions they offered me. They didn't even give me a discount and everything was for nothing. I honestly felt completely disrespected.

When i made it to the room. I walked in to a unclean floor. I had a hard time locking the window near the fire escape. The bathroom was scary with a lot of dust and mold. I was choking the moment i walked in the room. I couldn't breath because of the smell. I would not recommend this place.

Overall, gave 2 stars because although the property is falling apart, the location is superb. But other than that, this was horrible. The bed was basically broken, the springs were horrendous. The bathroom was rusty and gross. The couple shampoos in the bathroom were just tossed in there with no care. Our mini fridge was broken, and our AC was broken. It’s late June in NYC, and they didn’t even mention to us. The TV worked fine and the sheets were clean. The room was barely cleaned as there was residue on the cabinets. Paying almost $200 a night for this was absolutely not worth it.

The room was clean albeit dated. The mattress was sagging in the middle. There were bugs in the lights, and bug stains on the ceiling. The side lamp by the bed didn't work. No cups or coffee in the room. You could hear everyone walking around in the room above and beside. Couldn't control temperature so it was lucky that it was 65 degrees so I didn't need A/C or heat. Not a comfortable stay. I stay at many basic hotels and just need a bed to sleep, but I will not stay here again.

The hotel it’s self left a lot to be desired. It needs upgrades. We were first given room 105. The bed was broken and off the frame. We slept on it, barely. The next morning we removed the mattress and box spring and fixed the bed. Right after we finished doing that we were asked if we could move to a different room. No explanation given other than they needed the room for someone else. We changed room to room 302. Now a third floor walk up. The TV did not work in the new room so we immediately told the front desk and were told it would be fixed. The tv never was fixed so we didn’t have tv. The heat also did not work in the new room, only the fan/ac. It was 500$+ for two nights……

Although the hotel was accommodating with keeping luggage free of charge, there were a lot of problems. The shower lever was nearly impossible to lift. There was no hot water in the sink (it had been turned off). The concierge was incredibly loud - despite their own rule of quiet hours from 9pm-9am). At 1am, I opened my door to shush him and at 1:30am, I again had to open the door and tell him to be quiet. The young lady at day of check in was nice but their printer did not work and she wanted to keep my DL overnight. I told her no and she finally took a picture of it. Location was convenient to the they’re but I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Loved the location of the hotel. Heading east on 46th st, there were a lot of nighttime bars, restaurants, breakfast options, pizza places which was so convenient. Area felt super safe. Vanessa and the guy who check people in/out were nice. If you want to check in early, there is a $30 fee. If you are taking big luggage(s), be prepared to carry up flight of stairs, as there is no elevator. Microwave, ice, coffee is available on the main floor. The room itself was nice. The bed was comfy, as well as the pillows. There is a closet and microwave in the room. Bathroom had no vent for hot showers so make sure to close door as it will get hot in the room. AC available in room. Shower pressure hit the spot. Yes, there are signs of wear but if you’re looking for a place close to time square or the subway, and you’re not worried about it and are trying to save money, this is the spot! Overall, great place and will definitely book again!

Booked, day of receive and email 3 hours before check in stating they will not be able to accommodate us due to a “plumbing issue” and then proceeded to not cancel the reservation and would not respond to hotels.com customer support when I reached out to them to assist in getting us a new place to stay on such short notice. Woman at the desk was very rude and proceeded to talk trash about us in a different language while I was on the phone with hotels.com fixing their problem.

Our stay was very nice at this hotel. We picked it for the convenience of the location to a theater, and the bonus was that it was on Restaurant Row. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Our room was nice, however the bathroom was not the cleanest. There was leftover used soap in the shower, and some hair.

Our feet stuck to the floor. The sheets were stained. The bed was too big for the room so there wasn't enough room to walk around. There were no night stands and no closet. There were 2 remotes and neither turned on the TV. The windows looked into a utility room!? The dresser was missing a handle. There was a desk turned around backwards with no chair. The staff was nice and helpful but it was literally the worst accomodations I've ever stayed in. It is more of a hostel than a hotel. Very shabby and dirty.

I got to the hotel to be told my room was been given away, despite advising them my flight was delayed in Peru. They took me to a hotel all the way at JFK that smelled like cigarette smoke. The next morning, despite being told they will arrange my transfer back to the hotel, I had to arrange and pay my own transfers back. I emailed them my receipt but I still have not been refunded. I booked this trip 4 months ago, it was the worst experience I have ever had!!!!!!!

The hotel didn’t have my reservation, despite (luckily) copious confirmations I received via email and text. The girl at the front made it work, thankfully. You have to be let in the front door every time you need to go in- but half the time the person is not paying attention- on their phone or otherwise doing something else (not hotel related). The overall place was very shabby. Towels and linens were clean, though. No way to adjust the heat and no extra blankets provided, though we were on a “freeze” watch… and at the end the guy at the checkout was genuinely perplexed that I asked for a receipt.

The window didn’t lock, and it led to the fire exit. I found a lighter and plastic in my bed and hair on my sheets. It looked like someone was sleeping in my bed. And there was no connection to my TV. Also there are no elevators to this place, so you will have to carry your luggage upstairs. The staff is nice but the room was terrible.

We were able to check in early for $25. Room was small, but clean. Lock is sketchy - number key pad that probably doesn't get changed often. Smart TV kept going back to the Home Screen. Toilet ran constantly. Couldn’t adjust temperature. Great location to Broadway & Time Sqaure. Front staff was often sleeping in the corner, but always available.

No lift available. Use only stairs. And worse, the receptionist (Sara & Vinessa) allocated room on 4th floor (401) and receptionist does not knows, in which block this room is located. I went up 4 floors with luggage to realize that my allocated room is in different block. And the receptionist is least interested. Again went up four floors with luggage to reach 401. Electronic lock pad not working in room 401. so no way of closing the room... its always open.. Again go down to reception to inform about non functional electronic lock of 401. Receptionist gave room 402 and after climbing 12 floors (4x3), could enter room... The "disinterest in work" by receptionist (or any employee) is worst for any company. And finally, even though the hotel stay is already paid to Expedia, the receptionist refused to acknowledge this and demanded to pay again (I did it and informned to Expedia team). To the property: - Please treat guests with respect. - We are not staying for free. We already paid before knocking your door.

I had difficult time Check -In because the front desk couldn't find my stay even though I gave him my Res#. when I checked out that same day at 10:45pm now there's no one a front desk. SMH. It was a short stay because i just needed some sleep from getting off that morning and not able to commute home that day.

Did not appear to be ready to open as a full service hotel. From no scoop to dip out ice, no wifi access code available in the room, no phone or instructions on how to reach the attendant, had to wait 5 minutes in the cold for someone to open the door late at night. Security code to room was overly simple and easily hackable. The place was nice, but just didn't seem ready to open.

Tv did not work! No control of heat! Bathroom dirty. Code to door is the same as room number! Not safe! Not clean!

Given that, it was a decent enough place that looks like it had been remodeled on some level in the last couple of years. Was good to see that there was a fridge in the room and finding a room with a private bathroom at this price point is near impossible in NYC, so if your expectations are tempered properly, this is a decent stay. Paint job update was not professional it seems, but they tried. Bathroom is adequate and, again, at this price point you normally would have a shared bathroom, so probably can't find a better deal. I slept fine on the bed and found it comfortable but my wife didn't like it. We usually bring our own pillows as we don't trust hotel pillows. No elevator so be prepared to probably go upstairs but it's not too bad if you can do that. No keys - room has a specific code which could be less secure but you can't even get in the building without someone letting you in, so it probably isn't too bad. WiFi seemed fine. TV is an Amazon Fire TV that worked OK, though the TV remote was kind of beat up (worked fine). It was in Spanish so I had to change it to English, but if you know what you are doing it isn't that hard (we use Fire Stick at home, so it was easy to change it for me). All in all, if you are trying to save a buck staying in NYC, close to Times Square with plenty of good eating around you and you want the privacy of private bathroom, try here.

Had to ring a doorbell to get someone to come to the door. Waited 5 mins for someone to come let us in. Once we got in for check in very sketchy with the process.no keys were provided rather a keyless entry in which the passcode was universal to the whole hotel and anyone could break into another room. Left for the day to go adventure the city got back later in the night and the doorbell wasn’t working nor was there someone at the desk. Had to knock on the door multiple times. The room itself was very bear minimum and could not adjust the heat.

Very basic but bed was comfy and clean and so was the shower. The customer service was nice. Able to store my luggage which was locked up for safety. The building was secure. Its a great little no frills hotel. I will definitely stay again.

So bad we couldn’t stay the night. Cockroach spray saturated the air of this dirty hotel. Bathrooms were dirty and the doors open with the room number entered into a keypad. There was no way to secure the door from the inside. This place needs a lot of work.

Hotel was nice. To get into the hotel, you need to ring the bell and wait for someone to come to the door. Found out on my last day the bell was broken. Room was a little cold, but not terribly cold. Very nice location minutes away from Times Square.

Ese cuarto estaba super super sucio un ruido muy fuerte

The room itself was clean enough, but hair in the bathroom, paint spots on the floor, only one sheet and a duvet (in winter!), an uncontrollable radiator guests can't reach to close the valve (it was boiling), and no sound insulation made for an uncomfortable stay with little rest. Additionally, the sink had no hot water. (The shower did and water pressure was good, for note.) The bed itself was comfortable, but a blanket or even a separate sheet would be nice. I had thought of booking again, and the day clerk was very nice in putting in my request for the same room. Frankly, seeing people walked from one room to another and coming out telling how mattresses were in floors, there were bugs, and more did not add to my confidence. We used to live a few blocks away and I know these are old buildings. That doesn't mean basic cleanliness, extra toilet roll, towels, and a blanket in the winter wouldn't be expected.

Did not enjoy. Room was dirty. There were bugs in the bathroom. Only one man working.

When I arrived at the hotel, an extremely rude and arrogant person was standing at the door with a laptop advising anyone who booked their room through Hotels.com had the reservation canceled. I didn't receive an email or text message that this was the case. This person did not give a damn that I had no room and made no attempt to help me or contact Hotels.com about it. Fast forward to Monday, I calledthe customer service at Hotels.com and Martin was very nice. I received an email and this crummy hotel had not returned my money or have they returned any call or message from Hotels.com.

Good location for the theater area, and cheap price. But dirty hotel, no room cleaning services, common areas not cleaned, and room was bad (tv didn’t work, bathroom needed painting, and bathroom caulking molded). Bed was comfortable. Essentially you get what you pay for. Also no elevator. Won’t be staying there again.

Location for the price is pretty great, but for another $400 in addition to the thousand I spent here for four night I could have had a bed and dresser that wasn’t broken, a room free of cockroaches, a clean room, sheets not stained with blood and some yellow stuff, etc etc. so if you’re pinching Pennie’s it’s perfect
