Holiday Inn Express Mill Valley San Francisco Area by IHG

When I got out of the shower late afternoon it set off the fire alarm. Sort of annoying, standing there naked, dripping wet, wondering "what now" as your dog is howling to the sound. There wasn't a way for me to reset it. Had to call the front desk. There were signs at the front desk about potential flooding at high tide which didn't capture the magnitude of what actually happens. When I checked in, I was told to avoid one corner of the parking lot because it might get a couple of inches of water at high tide. OK, no problem. In fact, when I returned from dinner the whole back of the property was submerged by nearly a foot water, making the rear entrances unusable. With half the facility's parking under water, I had to park quite a ways away from my room. It was fine, but I wondered what would have happened if I had parked where I had earlier in the day at check-in and had wanted to leave? I'd have had to wade through a foot of water to get to my car. Be forewarned. The breakfast items were kind of yucky--all highly processed and generic. The bananas and yogurt were good. I went there because I liked the availability of the Mill Valley/Sausalito walking track nearby for walking my dogs. Be aware that they informed me of a $75/night cleaning fee for the dogs at the time of check-in that was not advertised when I booked on-line.

Enrique the night reception desk person was just wonderful. I watched him take care of the guest in front of me and he helped them find a room they like (clearly the guest had stayed there before). And I had made 2 reservations for 1 night each and Enrique help me consolidate into one room where I didn't have to move out. He made me feel welcome and truly supported since I was there to take 2 days worth of all-day classes starting early in the morning. Thank you Enrique!

My room was clean and spacious. Breakfast buffet was well stocked and enjoyable. Coffee was high quality. Hotel staff were always pleasant and helpful.

Helpful and friendly staff. Comfortable bed, nice view overlooking the mountains. We'd stay again for sure - it's such a convenient location for Mill Valley. A bit of noise could be heard from people moving round in the room above / shower noise from the adjoining room but not enough to spoil the stay or prevent us from staying again.

Fun location on major trail system. Newish remodel. Excellent shower. Bad thermostat. Room went from too hot to too cold and would not maintain a comfortable temp.

It was very nice to walkpast the parking lot and be on a path along the water with birds strolling about feeding themselves. The breakfast was just right with good choices. The staff was very friendly. That we couldn't stay longer!

The Holiday Inn express chain is so predictable so there are no surprises. Nice clean room on the proper linen, lots of charging sockets all sorts of things that you want are there. Pillars feel great bed is comfortable. Staff helpful. Go for it. Great value for money . Nothing

The bed was not comfortable and sounded like it was balancing on top of a filing cabinet. The rooms and hallways were dark with exposed wiring along the ceilings. Staff were perfectly friendly. This place just needs some TLC and an update.

The location was out of the city which we enjoyed, but it was close enough to get to San Francisco and cross the bridge when we needed to.

Breakfast was great and there were menu changes daily. Hot tub did not work while we stayed so if thats a big thing for you, maybe call ahead. Pool area was very nice. Hotel location was great with walking trails, restaurants and stores near by.

However, this time there was no staff response to the phone calls, additionally, the hot tub was out of service and there was no heads up about this. Additionally, the area around the pool was not well kept, or the areas in the hotel in general. Also, breakfast was not done well at all, the oatmeal was watery, eggs ran out early and when the new batch came it was time to close.

I, personally, didn't like the pressure from the shower bit it did the job.

Our room was impeccably clean and spacious. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed how open and inviting the breakfast room is. Before checkout, we hung out in the lounge and waited for the rain to stop.

Mill Valley is lovely, and this hotel is a nice amenity for the area for those visiting. I regret the hot tub wasn’t working, but the room and staff were pleasant and helpful.

Staff were super friendly and helpful!! Breakfast was fine for a chain like the Holiday Inn. We especially liked the sausage egg breakfast sandwich. Part of the hotel was under renovation.

The great location on a beautiful marsh with walking paths and birds and bay ..near restaurants and parking and close drive to Sausalito and mill valley downtown . Rooms are dour and back of hotel is janky

Quiet location. Flooding prone area. There should be a notice when you book that says it is a flood prone area, the river easily overflows, flooding the parking lot and in some cases the rooms.

Staff was not very polite. I signed up for the credit card offer in order to get a discount but it did not transfer to my reservation and I got no discount. I tried calling the hotel and they said to call the credit card company, so I called the credit card company and they said call the hotel, hence no discount and applied for the card and got a point against my credit for nothing-will not reserve there again or use credit card. Scrappy deal. Staff and issue stated above. Nothing was made right.

It’s a good location and it’s helpful to have breakfast included, but it wasn’t up to the usual Holiday Inn Express breakfast standards. We also had to get extra towels from a linen cart in the hallway because even though we had booked for 4 people, we only had 2 sets of towels in the room.

We had poor service from the general manager who never responded to our email below: I’m sending this email from the nearby Equator Coffee Shop to use their wifi as the power is still out at the hotel. I would like to request a credit for last night’s stay as with a power outage from 10pm (and as of 8am still no power) I paid for services that I didn’t not receive (power, internet, heat, shower, breakfast). I would also like to draw your attention to another unfortunate gap in service that occurred yesterday. When I returned from cycling at 2pm yesterday my key card no long worked. I was informed at the front desk that I was checked out per my reservation (However when I checked in it was clearly for 5 nights.) I was asked to produce my proof of booking again and then informed it was a system glitch and room keys were reactivated. I travel here several times a year to enjoy the great trail running and cycling, I have always been satisfied with your Mill Valley Holiday Inn but this trip I am disappointed. I would at the minimum request a refund of last night’s stay and I hope by the time I return to the hotel the power is back on so Leah and I can shower up and get on with more fun adventures!

Breakfast had wide variety to choose from. Cheerful and helpful check-in clerk. He recommended East Brother pub next door. Went for early dinner and found all food was excellent and service staff attentive and friendly. I’ll stay again!

In n Out burger is also close, wide variety of dining options in Sausalito which is beautiful and romantic.

Would have preferred a ground floor room, as we are getting older with s/w limited mobility. But climbing the stairs was probably good for us. We asked for, and received, a late check-out time, which was very helpful.

Booked a king room with bay view. Received accessible room with a fence view. On questioning, we were told they were over booked. We insisted, bearing in mind we are top tier with IHG and Platinum with Hotels.com. Miraculously, a room was found that better reflected our booking, although not in full. To compensate, a $50 discount was offered and accepted. At checkout, no one new anything about the agreed discount. The operative made numerous phone calls and promised to sort it out once the manager began work later. Four days later the discount was applied. Overall, a very poor experience.

This is my second time really enjoying my time stay at this hotel. Love the rounding views, having a good time with my early morning walk and enjoy my breakfast there, room service was excellent.

The hot tub was out of order and did not tell us on the website when we booked it. When we confronted the reception, he tried to play it off like he didn’t know it was out of order when there were 3 signs once you entered the pool area. The room (that we were put in, not all of them) was on a hill so everything was slanted inside the room which made us feel dizzy and was a tripping hazard. Kids were running around at 5am in the room above. It sounded like they were coming through the ceiling it was so loud. The continental breakfast had stale cereal, no juice left in the dispenser, no hot water, and no pancakes in the machine (this was at 7am so only half an hour after breakfast started). None of this was posted online and if this had been posted we would not have booked the room.

The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us the location was good, close to golden gate bridge and easy to get in and out to go to different areas.

While the rooms are renovated, the building itself is really old, and I had to change rooms because of creaking ceiling above me. I would not come back. Additionally, I had an issue with my work bookings where I had two reservations for my entire five nights stay. I communicated almost every day and still had someone call me during the workday to ask me why I hadn’t checked out of my room. Finally, every time I tried to call the front desk, it was just dial tones on the phone. I had to call from my cell phone three different times.

Nobody answers the front desk, either from the room or by dialing the number for the front desk online. This room was too expensive to not be able to watch TV. I would have to drive to the front desk for help. Ridiculous.

A beautiful location near the Bay and there was much wildlife! Breakfast was amazing!

Great experience. My favorite was a walking trail right off the property and we walked to dinner. Bikes were free. The breakfast was nicely presented, the pool was wonderful, and the staff were helpful. Location was ideal, nestled between Sausalito and Mill Valley.

I saw many mixed reviews when I booked this hotel but thought it would be convenient location. I am not sure why but when we book with Expedia stays on this trip we are put in room way in back farthest rooms of hotel, even when they have other rooms empty. I feel we were treated lesser because of booking with Expedia and not very happy with service. Room was loud in the morning with worker doing maintenance outside. There was no elevator to be found in our building and had to carry heavy suitcases up stairs. I won’t recommend.

The television was broken and they could not fix it or give me a different room.

Really noisy room heard people walking dogs barking kept us up all night upstairs for squeaked really loud every time somebody walked. It woke you up.

Ive stayed here 4 times and we love the convenience of the kocation, the staff, the pool and hot tub and the breakfast. We love the views as well. However, this is. O fault of the hotel, but last night i got no sleep due to the noisy neighbors. I had to drive five hours today on no sleep and im so upset.

Economical, clean and good location with free parking

My experience was horrible. Booked a wheelchair accessible room and it was not accessible at all. it was soooo inconvenient from the parking spot to the room as a wheelchair user. staff was nice but room was horrible.

I had to go back twice a day to get keys that didn’t work. The room was good, when can get into it.

I commend Holiday Inn, Express Mill Valley SF area for having a clean room available.. Had a little issue opening the door to the room, manager was very accommodating by subtracting $20.00 from the original price of the room..Overall, no major complaints..

We traveled to visit Muir Wood and see San Francisco. This was the perfect location. Breakfast was good, the staff was absolutely amazing. We stayed a week and I wouldn’t change anything about our stay. The price, cleanliness, and friendliness of staff was amazing. I felt safe at this location and I was able to travel all over while using this location as home base. I highly recommend.

Everything was good, but the staff were exceptional! Our questions & requests were always met with friends smiles, answers, & solutions.

The room was relatively clean and the staff was accommodating when we reported the the sink in our room was leaking, they offered to put us up in a similar room on the same floor which was really nice. Also moved us to the second floor when we requested. Unfortunately the second room's TV didn't function which was a bit disappointing but better than a leaky sink lol. The breakfast was nice and filling. The location is difficult to get out of at rush hour. The staff wasn't really available most of the time, the phone that rung the desk wasn't picked up. It's a very average stay, perhaps just barely not worth the price? But if you just need a clean place to sleep and a filling breakfast I'd say it's good. I ended up staying at the Best Western down the road the following time and it was much more worth the price imo. So take what you will from that.

We just needed to sleep - in late, out early. The bed was okay. The upstairs neighbors apparently did not need sleep and were practicing for a marathon ALL NIGHT LONG. Obviously not the establishments fault, but sound proofing is …

Overall, this hotel is in a great location if you are visiting family in the Marin area, or if you are exploring San Francisco but want to stay out of the city to keep a mindful budget. However, the building is an older construction, and it I was built on a marsh. It has been updated over time, and it’s definitely showing its age. The staff are all very kind and hardworking – they have good communication, and they keep the hotel neat and tidy on a daily basis. Breakfast was consistently good quality as well, with something for everyone. Unfortunately, on the second night of our stay, the bathroom faucet sprung a leak and water drained all over the sink and down onto the floor, so we had to change rooms very late at night. The next room we moved to had many other problems – broken refrigerator, and the room itself was not square, so neither the doorwall nor the entry door fit squarely into their frames, leaving an inch gap at the top of both doors where air came in. The heating/AC units in both rooms also didn’t work consistently, so the room felt either too warm or too cold most of the time. Because the room was not square, it’s sort of felt like you were walking and sleeping on a slight slant when you were in the room. When we complained the following morning, the staff immediately accommodated us by moving us to yet a third room for the rest of our visit. The receptionist also said that they shouldn’t have moved us into that room the night before! (Room 230). Not great.

Everything was great, especially the outdoor environment all around hiking in beautiful mountain. My only issue was the fan broke in my room and they fixed it promptly but now it’s broken again.

Cons: had to walk outside to get to rooms (card readers weren’t always easy to use, making it hard to get inside at times), bed was uncomfortable.

Check in went smoothly. Room was clean. We dropped our stuff and set the vent to ventilate the room while we were gone came back to a comfortable temperature. Breakfast was good for the most part. We were a bit late in the morning and some things were empty, but found enough to have a decent breakfast.

The view of the water from the balcony was amazing! We watched the low tide and the high tide and so many birds! Nice breakfast too!

This is a fabulous property. However you can hear noise coming from the hallways, other doors opening and closing along with people outside talking in the night in the parking lot.

Excellent location (close to Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, Sausalito, Golden Gate….) pleasant and responsive staff, clean rooms, and a wonderful walking path just outside your door!

Bonus: there is a restaurant/bar next door with great food and hotel guests get a 15% discount. We ate there both nights.
