Reviews
The hotel reviews are largely negative, with guests frequently mentioning issues with cleanliness, old and outdated facilities, and poor maintenance. However, the location is often praised for its convenience and proximity to downtown attractions.
- Convenient location
- Affordable pricing
- Lack of cleanliness
- Old and outdated facilities

Granted, the Stillwell opened in 1906 and definitely looks it. Its once-modest grandeur has faded. If you're looking for modern and fancy, find a different hotel. But if you're a fan of Film Noir B-Movies and ghostly old buildings with character, the Stillwell's silent, slightly melancholy vibe might be up your street. P.S. The Stillwell sits at the edge of downtown L.A.'s former theatre district. I didn't encounter the spirits of any failed vaudevillian magicians, washed-up ventriloquists, or broken-hearted chorus girls. But I'm sure they were still hanging around. Maybe I'll meet them during my next stay.
- 4/5
Right price in an expensive area is
- 5/5
Place is haunted. Didn't get charged a deposit. Bed feels like it hates you. Pretty sure I was the only guest, elevator was always where I left it. I dunno, I didnt die. So it's cool
- 3/5
Change the Expedia photo. That's not even the hotel. It's a hundred year old one star hotel masquerading as a four star.
- 5/5
Parking was across the street and was very reasonable! The rooms were clean and air conditioned
- 3/5
But no hair dryer.
- 5/5
Room was very clean. The Staff is excellent. The Hotel is light on Amenities, and the restaurant only has lunch & dinner hrs. If you want coffee there is a local coffee shop a couple doors up & a Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts within walking distance. There are restaurants also within walking distance. If you want a basic, clean hotel in Downtown LA, the Stillwell is a good choice. It is definitely the most affordable hotel in the area. I would stay there again.
- 2/5
Very old, outdated, almost feels unsafe.
- 5/5
Staff was great. Check in and check out was quick and easy. Only paid parking lot but it was conveniently located next to the hotel.
- 3/5
The hotel is not well kept and does not look like the photos I viewed when I booked the stay. The elevators are very old and, although the staff was nice, they did not meet my request of getting more toilet paper. I spent the last day without toilet paper and had to use tissues. That is unacceptable.
- 2/5
Parking was near but cost too much money $30/half day, unsecured). The room had 2 twin beds when I selected 2 queen beds. Built in 1912 in DTLA, it felt like staying at a low income residential apartment. Homeless everywhere asking for change. Will definitely pay the money to stay at a nicer hotel.
- 5/5
Location was ideal for stopping, business meeting etc
- 5/5
Easy check in. Clean room. WiFi.
- 4/5
I’ve been staying at Stillwell hotel for last couple years (when I travel to LA) its location is convenient for where I need to be downtown LA. The rates are affordable, Whole Foods near by, so you can stock up on some snacks, fruits or even light breakfast / lunch. Hotel / building is old (I think) and could use some renovations… at least the bathrooms. For the price & location it’s not bad. If I don’t find anything less expensive when I go to LA, I’ll stay there again. Location & price is most important for me
- 3/5
We love historic hotels, but that can be a roll of the dice. This one is serviceable and clean, but it is tired. From outside the entrance canopy is damaged and the lighted sign at the top of the building is half burned out. There is no overnight attendant at the front desk although the security guard eventually can let you in. The front door has no way to call in, although it apparently can ring a doorbell. There is no room key access through the front door after hours. Despite this and the very basic room, this is an affordable and functional place to stay located walking distance from a lot of DTLA, and it is clean. We were looking for a bit more pampering for this trip, and the desk manager graciously let us cut our stay short and refunded us the difference with Hotels.com help, for which we were grateful. If I were traveling on my own and just needed a basic place to sleep, I would consider this as one option. I would love to see an investor put something into this one.
- 4/5
Never got a code for the wifi so I cannot rate it. Clean room with ac. Only thing, the bed was a bit too ‘firm’. Do not have their own parking lot but there’s a (paid) lot next door.
- 4/5
It was an inexpensive stay, in a close location near Staples Center, not fancy but a solid place to rest your head.
- 5/5
Stayed at this hotel, I liked that it’s super close to the Crypto arena, and lots of food nearby, grocery store etc. the staff was friendly. The room was as advertised. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary but it had what I needed and for the price you won’t find anything cheaper that close. Very vintage building so that was cool.
- 3/5
Obviously, an older hotel, and the rooms reflect this. The staff were friendly, the bed were comfortable but only had two pillows which made it difficult to sleep with. I had to fold one of the pillows in half just to get enough height for my head. The TV reception kept breaking up. All in all if you need an inexpensive room to stay overnight in LA, the Stillwell is a fair choice, but bring an extra pillow or some form of neck support. Also bring your own shampoo and conditioner.
- 2/5
Very basic. Bad for the price.
- 3/5
Old hotel but cheap in middle of dt la. Best I can say is it does the job. Parking is decent though it’s unattended paid parking. I wouldn’t walk around at night but if you uber should be okay. I’d stay here again but I’d look at other places before I stay here again
- 5/5
Yeah the staff was really good with us. It would get better if the hotel amenities are modernized
- 1/5
Bad want refund
- 5/5
Yes
- 3/5
Crew nice and helpful
- 1/5
Old stringy smelly- outdated.
- 4/5
The hotel isn't the cleanest, and the vibe does feel a bit… “creepy” — BUT it was perfect for how much I paid. Even more, the folks at the desk were cool, restaurant in the lobby is some of the best Indian food you'll find in LA, and there's a Whole Foods across the street if you need anything for your stay. It's a great budget hotel if you're already planning to spend a ton of money elsewhere during your stay in LA. I'll definitely be back!
- 5/5
Friendly staff, nice room, great location.
- 5/5
AC was fine
- 4/5
Also Richard Ramirez killed some people there so you get that little touch of the Cecil without the weird aftertaste. I'll definitely book there again..
- 3/5
Staff was great. Old building.
- 5/5
The building is old and the rooms are basic, but it's super clean and the staff is very professional. I really love staying here and will probably choose this place over others during my next visit. It's very easy to get to the metro from here. The Indian restaurant on the first floor is pretty good, too.
- 2/5
Old building, small rooms, crummy beds, can’t polish a turd.
- 5/5
great room
- 3/5
The hotel is very old and if you are just doing one day then it’s ok
- 4/5
Was very convenient for Crypto Arena NBA game. Walking distance but old and tiered building with basic facilities
- 3/5
Everything’s old and smells
- 5/5
I like how friendly and helpful staff at Stillwell. However, the only thing I didn't like about the hotel is yesterday, nobody came to clean up my room while I was gone, despite the fact that the door hanger reads "please make up this room". Other than that, I enjoyed my stay overall.
- 3/5
I stayed here after going to downtown LA. Very convenient distance wise but very old place. Needs lots of upgrades. Still has old carpets in room and old paint on walls. Very old and not kept up. Owners need to upgrade. This is a hotel of back in the early 80s. Parking is up at 10 am and it costs $20. You have to get your car out before 10 am. Not a good place if you’re looking to a late check out.
- 3/5
The hotel is within walking distance of Crypt.com arena and many shops near by. However, the building is vintage, the bathroom is rusty and the air condiiton is old and noisy. The bedding looks clean and the carpet was well vacuumed but my sox got dirty to walk on it. Still I stayed here for the second time because of the location and the rate.
- 4/5
I didn't have a lot of expectation about the hotel but the room is a decent place to stay.
- 3/5
Staff was helpful. Bed sheets and towels seemed clean. The hand/body soap bar wasn’t so good. Not foamy enough. Happy there was an ac but it was very loud. Bed was firm but comfortable. I Homeless please around the area. I like that there were stores and shops near by. It was close to crypto arena which I liked. Shower Water was warm but stream felt like a power wash very powerful. They have a laundry room but you need to bring your own detergent etc. no vending machine for that. There are vending machines for drinks and snacks.
- 5/5
Hell yes
- 3/5
My only complaints are that the beds were super hard. Like sleeping on the floor. The bathroom is tiny so we had trouble moving around in there. The shower was missingvits shower head so we got a rain forest mist lol. Honestly if u are going to a concert or a confrence in the convention center on a low budget this hotel is great for a short stay.
- 4/5
Room was clean and bathroom showers were excellent
- 5/5
Great place to stay if you're looking for a clean bed to sleep in for the night and if you're not too picky about your hotels. It's an old building but everything is functional - small microwave and mini fridge; A/C works great (kept the room quite cold in the LA summer heat); shower has hot water; sink works; toilet works, all in all, can't complain about the basic amenities. The downtown location and price can't be beat, but if you want a fancier hotel room, this isn't the place for you. I'd definitely stay here again for the price and if I needed to be close to downtown LA.
- 5/5
Really nice people.
- 5/5
Great value for the money within walking distance to the convention center.
- 5/5
Honestly, for modern standards, the room could be seen as somewhat poor. But this hotel is excellent when it comes to value. Everything in your room is just enough to get the job done. Ac was great, room didnt stink, no bed bugs, good shower pressure. 10/10 would stay again.
- 4/5
I think parking is the only thing that needs improvement. Other than that, the hotel served its purpose.
- 3/5
I liked that it was close to the convention center. But, the fact that they don't have a designated parking area and that you have to pay 25 dollars for overnight stay in both the parking lots directly next to it is very inconvenient. The people were really nice but the elevators were a little too small for even 2 people. The price of the hotel (a little over 100 a night) matched the look of the hotel. The bathrooms were a bit small (I could wash my hands while sitting on the toilet) but the space of the bed room was great. It even came with a microwave and fridge so those are pluses
- 4/5
It’s a one-star hotel.. but we aren’t really picky . The stay was adequate and did what it was supposed to do for the price we paid . Loved the surrounding areas and very close parking. Plumbing and air were good. VERY QUIET, so no complaints. They had a microwave to use. Elevators old, mattress not too comfortable, TV channels weren’t always “clear”. But overall, it was good enough for us.
- 5/5
Parking prices were competitive, low rates which was great. The room itself was clean, having the rooms remodeled would be very appealing to a lot more people but it was a perfectly enjoyable stay.
- 5/5
Nice
- 3/5
Good location, walking distance to the convention center. The shower was surprisingly good, enough pressure and immediate hot water. The rest are... Meh. I mean I kinda knew it after reading the reviews, so it was just exactly what I expected. Old building, old room, insufficient amenities. Homeless junkies laying on the street. I emailed the hotel before but got no response. Tried calling them from the room after checking in and no one picked it up. But it was the best deal in that area and I might actually choose to stay there again.
- 4/5
We have been staying at the Stillwell for many years for an annual convention. It is reasonably priced, the rooms all have a fridge and micro and the staff is very nice. It is a family owned hotel and has a mellow family vibe in contrast to the typical corporate hotel. The neighborhood is not great with so many homeless but we have never been hassled and we walk everywhere. They have an Indian restaurant right in the lobby.
- 5/5
Amaizing
- 4/5
Location is great, property is as described.
- 3/5
The staff was very helpful, enhanced or upgrade the elevator, the rugs in the rooms. Everything else is fine.
- 2/5
Not clean
- 4/5
A bit older hotel, clean enough. Nice and dainty. Staff was courteous and helpful. Parking not included in stay or breakfast, but for the price it's ok.
- 1/5
feeling that it was going to fall into pieces
- 5/5
Property was safe, staff was very helpful and provided me with a blow dryer upon request which I needed.
- 5/5
I left the window open at night for air (the window opens!) and didn't run the air conditioning, so I don't know how noisy that might be. The refrigerator compressor kicked on sometimes, didn't bother me much. The neighborhood was somewhat noisy at night and since I left the window open I could hear noises of cars that were probably going too fast, but I slept well. The bed was comfy, but they don't have large beds so be aware of that if you care about such things. One thing that I found convenient was that there were several hooks for hanging clothing on. In my experience that is unusual. The elevator came surprisingly fast for such a hotel. That was nice. I was on the ninth floor so that was a benefit. The desk staff were courteous. There are probably more conveniently located hotels if you just want somewhere reasonably priced to stay on a more unfocused visit to Los Angeles, but I was in town for an event at the LA convention center, and the hotel was close enough for my purposes. If I have another such event, I would be likely to stay there again.
- 3/5
Practical, no-frills hotel for a decent price given the location. I was in town for a conference and just needed someplace relatively inexpensive (for downtown LA) where I could work remotely. While the building itself is rather old and you shouldn’t expect any creature comforts, the staff was super friendly and the WiFi (which is free for guests) was blazing fast. Also, the location was fantastic for going to the conference center and hanging out downtown.
- 3/5
i like the vending maching, i didnt like the tv
- 1/5
I have lived in warzones that were in cursed burial grounds that were better than this place.
- 2/5
This is an old broken down hotel you should not stay at
- 4/5
This hotel is very old. The only reason to stay here is price. It is a good value in downtown la.
- 5/5
It’s a great location the guy in the front desk is so helpful and friendly. The only thing is the place is in a historic building, and you can smell is old. The room was so clean with a mini fridge, microwave, tv. Just is the place looking and smelling old, but still I want to back there next time. The rooms have a nice view, is so quiet, and the price is so affordable. I recommend the place.
- 4/5
The rooms are nice and comfortable.. service was great! The gentleman in the front who helped us was very friendly..umm they don't have parking with the hotel stay so u have to pay separately.. and also the restrooms are very very small.
- 4/5
- 5/5
Near downtown
- 1/5
smack dab in the middle of skid row in LA. This is an old 1920's looking building. You can see and smell the age of it. It was horrible in every way. The best part was the front desk guy during the night shift, he was awesome and a saving grace for this horrible hotel.
- 1/5
Seems bad
- 5/5
Best mattresses here
- 1/5
Smell very bad!!
- 4/5
It was great and considerably less expensive than other hotels in the area for the weekend I stayed. I would go back again.
- 3/5
The room was decent for the price, but the TV was not cable and only a few air channels that didn't have anything good to watch. The shower heads need replaced and highly harsh.
- 1/5
Extremely dirty!
- 3/5
I loved the stay just in the public parking it gets sketchy
- 4/5
N/A
- 4/5
Very old building (like, really old!) rooms were adequate to be fair, but a slight upgrade to the rooms and the hotel in general will make this a much better place to stay. Entry was always an issue since you need to ring a bell for someone at reception to open the hotel's door! But very nice employees nevertheless. There were long strings of black hair on the towel AND on the pillow one evening! I've been to worse hotels, this hotel was adequate for my purpose, but will try to avoid it next time if I could
- 2/5
Tiny rooms in a sketchy area with homeless feet from the door. A fair representation of the city as a whole
- 1/5
Check in is 2:00PM but check out is 11:00AM And room has a bad smell small beds old building .
- 5/5
There’s not many reviews on this hotel, so it felt sketch at first. But upon arrival, the staff was friendly even gave new sheets upon request (not that the existing sheets weren’t clean) the room was in good condition, air conditioning, clean bathroom. Nothing fancy. Lobby doors stay locked for added safety. Neighborhood is nice, clean, walkable, not far from staples center (crypto), or the block DTLA. I used metro redline to Hollywood, car free. I will stay again
- 3/5
The location is perfect for visiting the Orpheum Theater. This is an old hotel that is not pretty, but it was safe, comfortable and clean.
- 1/5
Found bed bugs on the bed within 5 minutes of arrival.
- 4/5
I also paid a visit to the Gill's Restaurant. The food was delicious. Overall, good value for money.
- 1/5
I have bad experience on my life! Because I have accidents! I meet someone! That person try to kill me! And hotel same day they kick me out day before they don’t give me service, whatever I ask they say they don’t have it towels, tissue sheets and day accident I was really bad I can’t walk Work! And say I’m going to pay one more day ! They told me no! I have to leave the hotel plus I don’t have phone with me to call and they don’t help me with anything I don’t recommend this hotel to anyone
- 4/5
Stillwell was an experience for my family & I. The location was excellent to the convention center. They also had a nice cafe shop downstairs. The hotel is old but I never felt that my family & I were in any danger.
- 5/5
I like my room, the view of DTLA was incredible and overall this hotel was beautiful.
- 2/5
No breakfast???
- 5/5
It's a decent, basic, no-frills hotel. Good location. Older building with cool tile floor in the lobby. Very dated furnishings, but functional. Bed was a little firm for my taste and sheets very low thread count.
- 4/5
I like the location, whole foods is on the next block. The room is clean, got fresh towels and bed made every day which other more expensive hotels that my friends were staying at didn't get as good service as I did.
- 4/5
Everything seemed simple and quaint, nothing too crazy
- 3/5
Upon arriving to the hotel, I had difficulty entering the premises due to lack of attendance attending the door. We were greeted shortly after five minutes and was let in checking was quite easy booked on Expedia And was directly lead to our room elevators are quite small and the hallways were a bit Underkept With stains on the carpet upon entering the room, it was what you would expect two twin size beds. I’ve been uncomfortable to sleep on an AC machine really wasn’t doing its job besides that OK
- 5/5
Cozy and very comfortable to go anywhere in downtown.
- 5/5
Affordable prices
- 4/5
Our car window got smashed in while in the parking lot next to the hotel
- 2/5
I was hassled at check-in by the front desk employee. My name was listed on the booking as a "traveler", but the guy wouldn't let me check in because my husband made the reservation. The employee was generally unfriendly and showed almost no willingness to help. I won't stay at this hotel again.
- 1/5
Having trouble to get a refund
- 5/5
It's quite and really relaxed
- 2/5
- the room was very quiet and had a window you could open. - AC was working. - Room size was decent Negative: - everything is old and smells old - bathroom was gross. I had to wipe down the walls surrounding the toilet. GROSS! - when I first turned on the water in the bathtub, it was rusty and orange. - no fan in the bathroom - very hard mattress Interesting: - I never saw any other guests - the phone in the room reminded us of the Bat-Phone
- 5/5
The rooms are very basic, absolutely nothing fancy, and the hotel has no particular amenities. Which is fine for me, because I come to enjoy the city, not sit around in a hotel. Disclaimer: I've been here about a dozen times over the past decade, so I'm quite familiar with the area and property.
- 4/5
Staff was helpful
- 4/5
Affordable. No frills.
- 4/5
The price is good for the area
- 1/5
Not a comfortable stay. Old building, old facility, dirty and run down. Would not stay again.
- 1/5
I described this a “murder hotel” to people and they agreed after seeing pictures I took that varied wildly from that advertised online. The elevators are downright unsafe, their inspections being out of date. The water felt hard, and I was checking for bedbugs after I was bleeding from something after 1 night there.
- 4/5
One bathroom door wouldn't closed
- 1/5
- 4/5
I would like to have had more variety on the channels for the TV feed, e.g. CNN, to be able to get international news. Also some of the streaming channels would have been nice.
- 5/5
It was very pleasant
- 1/5
Stillwell is old, Antique wasn’t very clean and it smell. There was hair all over. Rooms are small dust was on the lamps TV don’t not have no channels stains on the curtain wasn’t a good one
- 5/5
the property is very downtown and seems historically old, but looks like they maintain it and keep it clean, restaurant and bar onsite, but everything is close by. extremely convenient. Nice staff. will be back
- 5/5
This hotel was the least expensive in the area. I was very pleasantly surprised there’s a bar and restaurant on site. Very old historic looking building but you can tell they make effort to maintain the property . It was clean and well staffed. Staff was very nice and pleasant building was secure. The only issue is you’ll have to park in one of those open paid lots the hotel doesn’t appear to have their own lot. Tried in the heart of downtown. They can’t really do anything about. That was still a great budget. Friendly clean stay and we will be back as I was there for the nearby school. There is a CVS Ralph’s..the crypto Arena just a 10 minute walk .It was insanely convenient.
- 5/5
El lugar muy lindo y cómodo! el recepcionista excelente servicio ❤️❤️
- 1/5
I arrived at the hotel at 4:30 waited at the reception for 25 minutes and nobody showed up. I had to leave and did not use the hotel - I need to be refunded
- 4/5
This is a very old building with character.
- 2/5
Extremely old and dated. Television was too small. However, staff was very nice and friendly. However, the facility needs serious upgrades, especially for the cost of staying there.
- 1/5
They left me locked out outside. The clerk fell sleep and I spent around 4 hours to get in.
- 5/5
Manuel and the staff were helpful and always courteous. Housekeeping came every day! Are the rooms new? No, but the building is 110+ years old. Accommodations are basic, but the rooms have so much character and history. I felt very comfortable in my room. Grateful for 24/7 coverage at the front desk since it's downtown. I'll definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
Staff was was prompt and great support..
- 1/5
Shacky elevators, no central heat, spotty internet,
- 2/5
My stay was okay but not pleasant. The hotel is very basic and run down. It has zero amenities/services, it looks very old, and doesn't make you feel safe. Nevertheless, it works if you really need to stay there--the room was okay. Neighborhood is not very good.
- 1/5
I stayed one night and there were bedbugs. I checked the bed and mattress when I got there and didn’t see anything, but when I woke up there were remnants of bedbugs on the bed. I checked out that morning and switched to a different hotel, and the front desk manager was really nice and got me a refund. I would not recommend staying here if you have the money to stay in a better hotel.
- 4/5
The property was convenient and in decent condition.
- 1/5
There were quite a few things that bothered me about this place. The rooms are a little run down and the bed was broken at the foot of the bed. The room smelled like smoke and was distractingly musty. I could look past all these things if it were not for the fact that I came back to the hotel after being out for the night and saw a sign on the door that said 'Out To Lunch' at 3 a.m. I tried bringing the doorbell and calling the hotel but the front door was locked. I waited for about 20 minutes but gave up and purchased another hotel room around the corner at Ace Hotel. I got a room that I could not stay in.
- 4/5
It was nice hotel. It is an old building but it is still well kept and perfect for budget travellers.
- 4/5
Good

- 3/5
This is the epitome of “you get what you pay for.” I specifically booked this because in two different areas on the listing it states EV charging. This is an outright lie, there is absolutely no EV charging, nor do I think there has ever been. There is a parking lot next to the property that charges $25 per night, no sign of an EV charger. This is what I imagine staying in a hostel in college would have been like. Very old rooms, one tiny thin pillow. Apparently the front door locks in the evening and you have to pull on the door and wait for the surly front desk person to let you in. (No buzzer or keypad.) The room was affordable, at least, and clean. Would not stay again.
- 5/5
For the value, worth my weekend stay. Did not have a single problem. Everything went according as scheduled. Will be back again.
- 3/5
This hotel has a great location for the concert venues. Excellent parking too next door. Unfortunately the beds are very hard and the room hasn’t been updated since the 90’s early 2000’s. It did the job for one night. Price was reasonable.
- 2/5
I don’t recommend it.
- 5/5
Good
