Reviews
The Freehand Hotel in Downtown LA is a unique and aesthetically pleasing establishment with friendly and helpful staff, fantastic cocktails, and clean facilities. However, some guests have complained about the comfort of the beds, noise levels, and the quality of the surrounding area.

Great location. Great hotel. Coffee shop and restaurant and pool in hotel. Great vibe vintage.

I really liked the hotel. My daughter and I stayed when we attended the Ariana Grande concert. Everything was great, nice room, many walkable eateries, and a nice staff. Only complaints I have are that our window was facing the street and it was sooo loud all night long with people and cars. I couldn’t fall asleep until after 3am.

Since my room faced the street, I was awoken by gunshots, loud music, and cars going over a pothole in the middle of the road.

Friendly staff as always. When we got to the room after checking in, the room was clean, but some stuff from the previous occupant’s were still in the room. Just some drinks, some swag from a convention, nothing major. I called the front desk and they offered to switch rooms for us so we accepted and it was an amazing room upgrade! A great surprise since we were in town for my husband’s birthday. Staff was amazing and even with the little snaffoo from the first room, we will definitely stay here again. It’s become one of our favorites when we come to LA!
- 4/5
There’s a Whole Foods next door, a Starbucks, and sweetgreen on the same street as well. We stayed 5 nights and used the valet for our car- in and out no problem, prompt service. The valet guys were great. Also a unique store connected to the lobby selling tote bags, shirts, sweatshirts and the like with a cool movie and tv series quotes theme “These gays. They’re trying to kill me” I’d recommend!
- 3.5/5
Nice, comfortable lobby. Rooftop deck with pool. Bunk rooms were comfortable. Friendly staff. Not really a hostel. No kitchen, no place to make coffee/tea. No bathrooms on hall, so if someone else in your room is using the bathroom, you have to go all the way down to the lobby.

Our stay at Freehand LA was wonderful. From our 2 minute checkin to the rooftop bar and pool (check out their happy hour!!), everything was amazing.
- 4/5
We had the private room with 6 beds. It seemed like it’d be fun for the kids but it was too high and unsafe for the younger kids. In general the hotel isn’t a great family option. There was a lot of noise and downtown yelling in the middle of the night.

The bed was very comfortable for a dorm bed, very firm and not "squeaky". Roommates were chill, and everything went great, nice that the showers and bathrooms are in the room as well. It takes a bit to navigate to the rooms and the staff was not too helpful for that. The downstairs health room could use a little help, was the water hot? The food options are not too great for me. More vegetarian options would help.

I like the lobby and the bathroom had nice hot water. I didn’t like that even though I was on the top floor I could her everything that happened on the street. The pillow was not firm, or fluffy. It was bunched up. I needed more blankets.

No blow dryers. It’s ok. We stayed two nights and asked to clean our room 1 of the days. They forgot. AC works well. No toiletries - it’s ok. I brought mine. Be sure to bring a blow dryer. Price is good for what you don’t get

My room was on the smaller side, but it was cute, comfortable, and had an incredible view of the DTLA skyline. Everything felt clean, well-designed, and welcoming. Staff was friendly and helpful. This has officially become my new favorite place to stay in Downtown LA. The only downside was the valet parking, which was $60 for the night. Other than that, I had a wonderful stay and can't wait to come back.

Early check in. We used the pool on the rooftop. nothing.

Our shower has the best water pressure of any hotel I’ve ever stayed in! The rooftop bar was a bonus and super cool spot to hangout at. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The Freehand hotels always have a super cool vibe and this location was no exception.

My roommates and how comfy the bed was. Could've offered bathing soap and a Bath mat
- 3/5
They charged an unexpected $34 fee just for appearing on premises. This fee was not advertised and not included in the hotels.com fee structure.
- 4/5
Lovely building close to city centre and transport. Helpful friendly staff. The best pod beds. They need to decide if they want to be the best hostel for travellers or a shelter for the homeless. The two do not mix.
- 3/5
The building is beautiful and remodeled with lots of interesting touches. However, this hotel is by no means family friendly. I was traveling with my 12 year old son. The lobby isn’t really a lobby but a neighboring restaurant that may or may not be open at advertised times. The pool is part of a rooftop bar that ‘allows’ hotel guests under 21 only from noon to 7. And it’s packed with non-guests there to party. If you’re looking for a no frills spot in a central (if noisy) part of downtown, this might be a good fit. If I had understood their business plan better, I would not have stayed here for a family trip.

Property was fine for a short stay. Lots of amenities on site but a bit noisy since it is right downtown LA. I had a bit of an issue upon arrival as was not provided with the room I reserved online through Expedia. Even though I showed the Front Desk Attendant my itinerary with room description, instead of honoring it, he said it was an error on Expedia's end and I should contact them to get a refund.
- 2/5
The pool deck was closed off for a loud private event that was completely inappropriate for a standard hotel guest environment. Staff on-site gave conflicting timelines about when the event would end, but the disruption lasted the entire evening. Because the pool has limited daytime hours, there was no opportunity to use it the following morning either. The customer service recovery was nonexistent. Multiple staff members acknowledged the issue and promised a substantial refund and managerial follow-up. Instead, only a token credit was issued, and subsequent promises to investigate and return phone calls were completely ignored. It is poor business to block access to a major advertised amenity without prior notice to paying guests, but the broken promises and total lack of professional follow-through are the main reasons this property is not recommended.

Swimming pool, gym, location. Staff is very helpful, kind and accommodate whenever they can. I love the international vibe of most of the guests in the hostel rooms. I enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. Repairs seem to be bare minimum. I loved the style of the decor. You can tell it was really nice when it was first built, but now it’s falling apart. The air conditioners/heaters need to be replaced. When I turned on the air conditioner big black chunks of dirt were flying out of it and onto the beds and floor. I asked for it to be cleaned and filter changed. One guy came in and didn’t clean it at all. He just changed the filter and dirt kept flying out of it. This happened in several rooms I stayed in. The people doing repairs are not that skilled and do not have an eye for quality. Most of the carpets are filthy and they do not steam clean the carpets enough regularly. Some of the guests in the hostel rooms are not screened enough when they check in. There seemed to be some hard drug addicts, criminals, and homeless people that are let into the hotel. It was very uncomfortable and felt scary at times.

This hotel is way overpriced for what it is. Room and overall hotel was dirty and dusty, very dated and window stared out to a wall. Area of town is not desirable for a solo female traveler. Food at restaurant was not good. Bar in lobby was never open and had cation tape around it one day. Would have canceled if sat wasn’t refundable. Property fee also tacked on—no idea why for. Stay elsewhere if you are a business person. This feels like a straight up hostel.

That afternoon we went down to the valet to get our car to head to the first graduation. It did take a bit to get the car but we ended up being 15-20 min late to USC than expected. Not too bad. The next morning OMG this is when it got really bad. We woke up at 6am, got ready and went to breakfast right at 7am…no one was there to seat us. Eventually the chef sat us down. Anyways long story short we ended up not getting our food until 7:45am and had to scarf down our meal to get to USC on time again. The waiter gave us a free granola but other people were also in a rush and had gotten no food yet. I thought it was in poor taste to give us something while others were waiting. We rush to valet, got there at 8:05am but there is no valet there. We ended up sending my BF in an uber. I didn’t get the car until 8:40am. The valet guy was doing car checks so we didn’t see him at the stand until 8:30am. Oh, by the way there was no one at the front desk, nor was anyone answering the phone during this time. I complained and they offered was to remove the $30 resort fee, not the parking. After a long conversation magically they were able to remove the parking. We got back that evening and they didn’t even clean the room. No thanks!

Nothing the workers there were very rude. My wife was injured by the hotel elevators. She was walking out, pushing a stroller that had two babies inside of it, and the doors immediately slammed on her and would not let her out. We spoke with the people in the front and there was nothing they were able to do about it. We wrote an incident report and that was that it’s been going on a week already and every time we call to speak with a manager, they say there is no manager available. Worst experience ever and this is definitely getting taken further since there’s nothing they want to do about it and they keep ignoring us. Nothing the workers there were very rude. The location is incredible, it falls right in LA heart. When we got there to check in we barely had any information about the hotel, we did not know where the gym was, check out times etc. We stayed 2 days and we did not have any housekeeping. We wished to have fresh towels and a little cleaning but nobody went to our bedroom. The first day I went to the gym it had so much water on the floor that I felt I was in the swimming pool instead and one of the treadmill was not working. (They are 2 in total)

The rooftop deck was the best part about the hotel. I am a female and stayed in a dorm with three other males. The bed creaked very loudly, the window doesn't really open, but you get what you pay for so I can't really complain. They don't do room service everyday you'd have to ask, they change the towels about every 3-4 days. The shampoo and body wash bottles, for some reason, are always gone or empty, so you should bring your own. Location is good though.

-overpriced when compared to other hotels (this when booking a suite, didn't try the bunk/dorm rooms). -minimal amenities in suites, especially the two plastic cups provided (cheap motel), and the tiny fridge. No water, coffee, or any option for having even better plastic glasses in room for wine or drinks. Front desk unwilling to provide any glasses other than water from the gym. - Only restaurant in building on a Sunday is the roof terrace which opens at noon (maybe the same for the other days). No coffee on roof terrace, only place to have food. - no way to call lobby/front desk/ valet from room (a phone was in my suite but call buttons inactive. Pros/ -the downstairs restaurant in the hotel is lovely and beautifully designed, as is the decor in the hotel (minimal 60/70's retro). -Staff is overall nice and especially the late night staff (weekend valet and front desk. Shoutout to Tony ) were professional and accommodating as much as they could be with the limitations of hotel policy. Overall, I wish there was more focus on small details of service and care. Small but elevated gestures from the hotel. Not happening atm. If it was 20 % cheaper it would fit the bill.

Love the decor of the room we had a corner studio booked .Absolutely lovely . Only down side is the noise . Throughout the night the noise from the street is intense . All night cars and bikes doing doughnuts on the intersection of the hotel . Ironic not hot water kettle in private rooms . One needs to go to the basement to get hot water . Room is equipped with a mini fridge , iron / ironing board , safe deposit .

Our room was on the 10th floor. The view was great. The room was FREEZING! Despite turning up the temperature. The windows seem to be the original ones from the building bc, insulation? Who is she? Never met her. We could hear EVERY noise from the streets AND the rooftop. The bed was lumpy, and not very comfortable. The bathroom was tidy, and the shower?! I’d stay there again JUST for the shower. That water pressure felt like a massage on my skin. Staff was friendly and attentive. The bar downstairs wasn’t our vibe but it is beautiful. The bar upstairs lacks identity. The views are stunning though.
- 5/5
The property was clean, staff friendly, and we enjoyed our stay.
- 1/5
When I brought this to the staff's attention, the response was completely illogical and unprofessional. Instead of prioritizing a cleaning or offering an immediate solution, I was told to "bring my stuff back down" and sit in the lobby for another three hours until 3:00 PM. It is unacceptable to expect a guest who has already waited half the day to vacate a room they have already checked into because the hotel failed to meet basic cleanliness standards. The lack of empathy and the "solution" provided were insulting. I would not recommend staying here if you value your time or expect a clean, professional environmt .

Uncomfortable furnature (bed, chairs and couches. Surprise $97.00 fee.
- 5/5
excellent

Rooftop was amazing 💗

Pillows need to be improved.

Historic. DTLA. Roommate. She used the bath mat first. No locks for the lockers. Price was $43 for mixed dorm and $96 for all female. What sense does that make? I don't want to share an intimate room with 4 strange men. I don't want to have relations with 4 strange men. Why do they charge extra money a lot of money to preserve your private areas?
- 5/5
Near restaurants Nothing loved it
- 5/5
This place rocks has everything a visitor needs location a great staff and very clean. I totally recommend this place😁👍
- 5/5
Excellent
- 4/5
Location, amenities, luggage storage. Lock fees for luggage. I had my own lock but I thought the fee was high for those who didn’t.
- 4/5
Good hostel option in LA. Breakfast menu and staff are great.
- 4/5
Good hostel option, affordable and comfortable.
- 5/5
Room phone didn’t work, upgraded my room to a corner suite. Only to be placed in a different room. Kitchen closes too soon
- 3/5
I stayed at the Freehand Los Angeles in December and found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. On the positive side, the price is very reasonable for the area. However, I didn't feel particularly safe in the surrounding neighborhood, and it felt quite far from the main attractions. It was also very noisy throughout the stay. If you are on a tight budget, it is a fair option, but it wasn't the most comfortable or convenient experience.
- 4/5
The property supports a hip environment. The lobby is very nice with lots of areas to relax, charge your phone, and most importantly use the restroom next to the Broken Shaker. The room was a 4 - bed, bunk bed room . Yet, only had 1 bathroom. Perhaps I was confused looking at the various choices but I thought I saw several toilet stalls and multiple showers. There was only 1 bath mat/towel, which an occupant had already used. The lockers were not supplied with locks. And it was so small and cramped. But I loved the overall vibe and the building was well kept. Quite pristine actually. Beautiful. The same room and one toilet and one bath mat the other occupant already used.
- 3.5/5
The staff treated me like I wasn’t a guest at times.
- 4/5
This hotel is cute, but the area that it is in is extremely loud. Also, it’s on the border of Skid Row and the Fashion district. If you’re not familiar with LA, these parts can sometimes be a bit rough. The staff was never really available via phone from the room so we had to walk down to the lobby often when we needed things. Also, when you call the hotel, no one picks up. Keep in mind that this is an older building that has been renovated, so it has quirks.
- 5/5
Beautiful rooms and decor. Truly a unique place to stay and rather centrally located to 7th and Metro and the Theatre District. Tip: 25 all night parking at the lot across from Wholefoods.
- 5/5
A good location to visit the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Broad. Close to the Whole Foods.
- 5/5
I love this place! You can see the entire city from the rooftop diner which also has a pool! Staff was super friendly and helpful! I also love Expedia for showing me hotel choices!
- 5/5
Not the quietest place to stay, of course, being downtown, but the nostalgia is something that I enjoy.
- 5/5
great space, well priced and well taken care of. Central location and great staff
- 4/5
An amazing option if you want to save a ton of money but stay near the downtown area. Amazing pool, nice lobby, and really great to have two bathrooms + shower in each room. It is a bummer that you can't eat or drink outside food in the lobby or at the rooftop, but there is a common area in the basement where you can heat up your food, etc. However, with this low rate, you can't really complain about anything.
- 3/5
Room was very clean , had nice roommates till the last night. Overall not bad at all. Would book again.
- 5/5
Plenty of food and drink in the immediate vicinity. Large study bunk beds in each room with two toilet/shower in each dorm. Large lockers (bring your own lock). Close enough to the rail line.
- 5/5
excellent
- 5/5
Amazing hotel so affordable and the pool rooftop was incredible!
- 5/5
Place was cool
- 4/5
Clean
- 4/5
An affordable and central location that has a wonderful rooftop pool! I stayed in a female quad on the top bunk for 4 nights, and while I was able to have an extra pillow and change out my towel, I will say that experience is better suited to a more flexible and forgiving guest. The staff was wonderful and the cleaning was thorough, so it's a great budget option!
- 5/5
Excellent stay in a charming hotel in the heart of DTLA. Good restaurant, cafe and bar. Comfortable room and very affordable.
- 4/5
No breakfast
- 5/5
Excellent
- 2/5
There is property fee of $28 USD + Tax per day. It doesn’t mention on their Expedia page. Room has no coffee/tea and no room service. Restaurants onsite rarely open! Compared to other Freehand locations, this LA location is BAD! Staff was very friendly thou!
- 5/5
Will be back!

- 5/5
Hotel was beautiful & clean. We loved our corner deluxe king room. Beautiful restrooms. The rooftop bar and swimming pool was fantastic . Food & drinks were excellent. Hotel in a great area to walk.
- 4/5
Good location.
- 5/5
Quiel the valet was AMAZING!! He was so personable as I waited for my shuttle. He truly cares about the guests and providing a high quality experience. I highly recommend. Thank you.
- 5/5
Extremely nice!!
- 5/5
Excellent experience.. I even extended!
- 5/5
Excellent rooms! Definitely an amazing hostel. I had a chance to see the shared quads and wow. Great to see the washrooms in the room itself. I stayed in a private room with g a great layout. Amazing experience overall. There was one lady at the front desk who was a little sour but everyone else was 10/10. Excellent security and bar across the street!
- 4/5
Super friendly staff and immaculate cleaning services. Stayed there with my son for 4 nights. Rooftop bar and pool a bonus. Yummy cocktails. Rooms was on the small side, but bed super comfy and we didn’t spend much time in the room. Would happily come back!
- 5/5
Great place!!
- 5/5
When I was unexpectedly put in hospital the hotel had their security go to my room, pack up all my stuff and hold it for me so I wouldn't have to keep paying for the room.
- 5/5
Super nice! Downtown LA is busy but that’s the beauty in it. Everything is walking distance. Public transit and light rail aren’t too far away. Lively club scene too.
- 5/5
Great
- 1/5
The manger at the desk wasn’t super helpful or that concerned, and I had to press to write a statement that it was stolen, and request to speak to head of the security. The head of security was much more helpful and wanted to go to the room and look around to make sure it wasn’t there. It wasn’t. And then I was told to wait in the lobby to talk with the head of security and manager. Who after I waited almost 40 minutes conveniently disappeared and I was never contacted by the hotel after. I wanted to file a police report, but after inquiring and speaking to a lawyer… the chance of me recovering my items would be next to impossible as how could it proven by the next day that it was taken by staff. My retreat night turned into my deepest regret of my time in LA. These items are custom made and impossible to replace. As well the rooms are incredibly loud, the door doesnt touch the ground so you hear everything from the hallway. So sad as I used to love staying here in years past.
- 4/5
The room itself was clean and well-maintained, which is always appreciated. However, the air conditioning left something to be desired — it simply wasn't powerful enough to keep the room as cool as I would have liked. We actually had to go out and purchase our own oscillating fan and a portable ice maker just to stay comfortable, which is not something a guest should ever have to do. The pool looked very appealing online, but getting up there was a disappointment — it felt more like an apartment pool with a few plants around it than a hotel amenity worth getting excited about. To make matters worse, many non-guests attending pool events were obnoxious and detracted from the overall experience. The valet parking situation was also frustrating. Waiting for your car took far too long, and when I called down to the front desk, the concierge was not helpful in getting my car retrieved. Overall, the Freehand Hotel feels more like a glorified hostel than a proper hotel. It has some potential with its friendly staff and clean rooms, but several operational areas need serious improvement before it can truly shine.
- 4/5
Location is convenient, walking distance to so many bars and restaurants. The rooftop bar was one of my favorites; very beautiful views and yummy drinks! Definitely an older hotel, not modern; but I’m okay with that. Would stay again for a weekend
- 5/5
I didn’t bring pet and laundry
- 5/5
Clean
- 5/5
This place is great! I booked a quad room for me & my family; we were all comfortable and cozy :) The front desk staff was SO friendly! The room itself was clean, the hotel was safe, lots of things to do there & in the surrounding area. I'll always stay here when visiting DTLA!
- 5/5
Stayed in a female quad, staff was lovely as super helpful. Rooms were clean and mostly well designed.
- 4/5
Average. Good spot to stay. Nothing too luxurious but enough to sleep and stay and feel comfortable. Nice small gym. Pool is pretty
- 5/5
I enjoyed my stay at the Freehand. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the location is perfect. The prices can't be beat, so this will be my only choice when visiting DTLA.
- 4/5
Great old hotel/hostel. Cold pool on the roof :). Everything was fine until the morning. There was a movie set construction crew building scenes in the parking lot right outside our window, so loud, couldn't sleep. I mentioned it to the staff at check out. His reply - laughs and says we were on the quiet side. We only needed one night, good enough for that.
- 3/5
Room was not the cleanest ..staff was friendly but my keys were deactivated twice.
- 5/5
Great room, next time I’ll request a bittom bunk though!
- 5/5
The property is like a hotel from the 40’s. The wood is scuffed in places and it’s not slick and bright. It’s moody but cool. The staff is so welcoming.
- 5/5
Rooms were clean, staff gave me a complimentary upgrade, rooftop pool area was absolutely perfect. Restaurant on roof charges mandatory 18% gratuity for tip.
- 5/5
The stay at this property was immaculate. I would recommend this facilty for anyone looking to acquire overnight stay.
- 5/5
Second time staying at this hotel and have had nothing but a great experience. Staff is super friendly. Room is always clean and the shower head pressure is great. The only issue was that the button on the bedside phone to call down to the front desk did not work, but other than that, everything was great. I will be staying there again.
- 5/5
everything was amazing, I will return
- 4/5
Make sure to pack ear plugs! I've stayed there before but forgot how loud the it is there. It sounds like the windows are wide open! They should provide ear plugs, but they don't, so make sure you do! Its in a location that is close to a lot of great places, but it is the city, so its a but sketch at night. The staff is great, the place is clean, and its great price.
- 5/5
affordable, convenient stay in the heart of downtown LA. i was there for about a month and would recommend this place to anyone visiting or needing a place to stay in LA. kind staff and the rooftop pool/restaurant/bar takes it to the next level. don’t miss happy hour/ sunsets at the broken shaker!
- 5/5
Very cool staff, clean facilities and awesome atmosphere
- 5/5
Very cool building. Nice rooms and design.
- 1/5
I’ve resubmitted my review several times. Why is it being rejected now for the third or more time? These people are lying pieces of garbage to the point of creating deep fake videos to slander people. The Freehand has a human trafficking problem and everything else that goes with it. The beds are uncomfortable, the front lobby closes at 10pm, most electric plugs don’t work, kitchen is unsanitary Petri dish.
- 5/5
Would recommend staying here.
- 5/5
Yes
- 4/5
This place is so uncomfortable.
- 1/5
Uncomfortable beds. Lobby closes at 10pm, and most the electric outlets don’t work. Outlets inside rooms sometimes don’t work. Potential human trafficking with prostitutes from all over the world. Hard pass.
- 5/5
Nice place
- 5/5
Bathrooms were very clean and were stocked up accordingly. I’d def stay here again.
- 5/5
The staff was so friendly and help me with my check in, the room was perfect, large and comfortable, I was lucky to share with other quiet guys
- 5/5
Room is so cute! Loved the stay.
- 5/5
Excellent staff and service!
- 3/5
The Freehand offers the appearance of style and luxury without the substance of it. The curtains don’t cover the windows. The kitchen/lounge space is a depressing fluorescent lit basement room with no windows or stove. The worst was that they offered me, a white lady, a free coffee card but not to my black friend. Despite Los Angeles being in a desert, they chose shower heads that deluge you and waste so much water. It all left a sour taste.
- 5/5
Room was very clean and staff was nice. Centrally located to everything we wanted to see.
- 5/5
The staff where amazing, the bars where great and drinks where great I just overall had an amazing time here for the 4 days I was here and room service was timely and courteous if you need a place to rest your head that's affordable and respectful of you I'd recommend it.
- 5/5
da freehand is da bomb !!!
- 3/5
Very small room
- 5/5
Clean room, nice staff, nice hotel and lounge/rooftop area
- 5/5
everyone was very helpful
- 5/5
Clean bathrooms, good water pressure in the showers.
- 1/5
This hotel seems like a revolving door for people in crisis. It looks like maybe a human trafficking ring has set up shop there. I had previously asked to change rooms because of problems I was having with my bunk mates. One person didn’t like me talking while I was watching a movie. It was late, and I was having a health related episode. I needed reasonable accommodation but none was given. I have several health problems including brain damage that causes me to talk more than the average person. I have to learn how to live in society all over again. It’s painful especially when dealing with people in our society whom just don’t care about the disabled, elders, or veterans. I deal with a lot of racism and discrimination here in Los Angeles. I’m doing the best I can with the resources and tools I’ve been given. My bunk mates never seemed to leave the room. I’m a disabled veteran. According to them they set the rules for everyone. I think my bunk mates were gay male/female prostitutes and maybe drug dealers from other countries. I really don’t care but it speaks to their credibility and the fact that I was treated unfairly despite any complaints they had. They said they would give me a full refund for a one night stay. I’m still waiting for my last $50 security deposit and one night.
- 5/5
Great stay!!
- 4/5
Friendly staff and location itself.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly staff, clean, spacious and comfortable.
- 5/5
Room was clean, and the rooftop bar was beautiful.
- 4/5
Good room, good stay
- 3/5
If by mistake your bag is in other locker which even though is not occupied the cleaner can break your locker and take your stuff without any prior notice or after communication. Moreover, they also took my water and threw it which i had not completed. The shower area is too small..Its really on the room mates how clean they keep it or dont keep it.
- 5/5
Room was very clean and really cool atmosphere
- 5/5
No parking valet only
- 3/5
The room was good but the drinks on the rooftop wasn’t so great
- 5/5
Had a good stay.
- 5/5
The most courteous staff and greatest service I’ve experienced
- 3/5
Friendly staff but rooms are dark. Few amenities.
- 5/5
Such a nice clean and vintage feel
- 5/5
I had a great stay at that hotel. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the overall service was excellent. My room was clean and comfortable, and the showers and bathrooms were well maintained. Everything felt organized and taken care of, and the hotel had a really nice vibe. I truly enjoyed my experience and would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting LA.
- 5/5
Most important, the staff was extremely helpful. When I said I needed a microwave in my room so I could prepare warm compresses for my eyes, Adul (the night clerk) had a microwave in my room within five minutes. Freehand is my choice to stay at everytime I'm in LA
- 5/5
Super cute hotel! Lovely, clean and spacious.
- 5/5
Small quaint rooms
- 5/5
Nice small room
- 5/5
Great staff. Could use a little facelift on amenities, blankets are a little worn, pillows a little thin.
- 5/5
Great stay! Loved the hotel, view and great service.
- 5/5
Will definately stay at Freehand again in the near future.
- 3/5
Internet service is slow and over-restricted, extremely noisy on the street front side
- 4/5
Best part about this hotel is the shower! Ever stand under a waterfall??? That’s what it’s feels like. Overall clean room, amazing view of downtown. Rooftop bar was cool and drinks were good! The only thing is NO parking so that will run you an extra $60 if you park a few blocks down. Other than that it’s a good spot to stay
- 5/5
Excellent stay rooftop was amazing with 80+ degree weather
- 5/5
This property is outstanding, the staff are so helpful, th rooms are clean . My favorite though is the rooftop pool with a bar and a restaurant. The food was great
- 5/5
Good place to stay in Downtown LA. Rooms are clean and the lobby and rooftop offer a great atmosphere.
- 5/5
Great room, the rooftop bar is also and location is central to everything LA!
- 5/5
Great stay great staff
- 5/5
Everything perfect stay
- 4/5
The rooms are small ,also the bathrooms
- 3/5
Rooms could use a little more attention and there was a roach in the basement where people keep their food. That was really off putting.
- 5/5
Exceptional all across the board
- 4/5
Very nice space
- 5/5
Clean room, felt safe, interesting neighborhood, rooftop pool and bar, I loved it there and will visit again. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
really love the style of freehand hotels. also in a great part of dtla that's surrounded by restaurants and old art deco buildings. hope the revival continues in this part of the city
- 5/5
Excellent stay! The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Staff were friendly and helpful, making check-in and check-out smooth. The location was convenient, and overall the hotel offered great value. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
- 2/5
We’ve tried this place twice and both times were terrible.
- 5/5
Friendly staff and clean amenities. Convenient location within downtown LA.
- 4/5
Great location and good price for the amenities and hostel room experience. Staff is very friendly.
- 4/5
The mattress is not good
- 5/5
Great stay
- 3/5
Nowhere for residents to prepare food/coffee. Decor of room, lobby, cafe kiosk/restaurant very cool. Price was great. Location ok but area a bit sketchy.
- 5/5
Absolutely. It’s always a pleasure to stay at Freehand. Rooms are great and reasonable prices.
- 5/5
- 5/5
Rooftop pool and city view, close to public transport, good price, clean, gym
- 3/5
Pillows needs to be cleaner, they smelled someone used them, as well as the bed, the employees in the front and the other staff were nice and helpful, TV has no option to cast videos which is almost useless. Everything else were okay.
- 5/5
Clean and friendly staff
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
The staff was nice and they have security at night which is great in DTLA area. You use your room card to enter the elevator floor, I like that security protection. I had a great time solo traveling & this was the perfect stay!
- 1/5
I had to cancel my trip
- 2/5
quad was absolutely spaceless
- 3/5
WC in room is ok Walls are very thin - outdoor in the corridors had constant people talking loud and it was not a pleasant experience. The rooftop bar online states opening hours, however I went at 9.45pm and was told they were closing. Although I understand this could be a one off, this discredits the hotels amenities.
- 5/5
The front desk ppl were very nice and professional. The room could be a lil dark even u turn all the lights on. There was individual bathroom comes with the four person dorm, which is really nice
- 5/5
The Hotel is a good option.
- 2/5
Total digester. I literally couldn’t sleep through out the night . Please stay away from it unless you are backpacking traveler saving dimes
- 5/5
Awesome but I had some weird Roommates iHad no control over my space. Due to my race everyone was white I'm an African American male I felt outta place. But The Staff was awesome and very helpful. probably the only place I'm staying when I visit Los Angeles. I'm just going to get a single bed next time
- 5/5
I had a really nice stay, during my last day when I was packing up and had to go grab breakfast, my room didn't work but I had someone help me as fast as I can to fix my door. I really recommend staying here
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Cute hotel good location staff was nice and easy check in check out
- 5/5
Chose this spot for proximity to Metro and Bus lines for ease of getting around LA for a week stay. Nice room on 6F. I'm from NYC so used to it but kinda noisy from street activity, good to be aware of. Didn't make it to the pool or rooftop bar.
- 3/5
They allowed a check in at 2.30 am, which was the deep sleep time for other guests. I was in a quad bed room, we woke up when the new guest barged into the room. The staff should have more thoughtful about it
- 4/5
We couldn't try the breakfast because they didn't serve after 10:30.
- 4/5
No take a breakfast
- 3/5
Not knowing who is going to room with me was kind of off-putting. The lack of air flow, shampoo, soap and disinfectant spray would have helped with freshening the room much more.
- 4/5
no breakfast
- 5/5
Tyj
- 4/5
A lot of stuff was great. The staff was friendly, the room was clean, the furniture in the room was nice, and the Freehand theme was kinda neat.
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The gym is quite small, but it works well for a quick workout. Outside noise can be noticeable, though that’s expected when staying right in downtown. A big plus is the convenience—Whole Foods and CVS are both just a short walk away.
- 5/5
Room were clean and tidy, friendly staff.
- 1/5
No room service, we requested blanket, never got it, if we turn off the lights all the electric is out.
- 5/5
It was a very lovely stay! I enjoy my stay!
- 3/5
Check in was easy though the hotel staff was not at all welcoming. Rooms were neat and clean but had strong wooden furniture smell. Till 3am in the morning could hear people from across the roads shouting and screaming just as if they were standing in my room and shouting. Rooms were very smaller than the one shown in the picture. Area seemed a bit shady with all kinds of people approaching when you get out of hotel.
- 5/5
Cleanliness is a 10. Everything was great. Would recommend
- 5/5
Great room to myself, had fun on the rooftop pool and bar, and appreciated the functional historic building!
- 4/5
Staff was nice. Rooms were cleaned. Sad we didnt get to use the pool due to schedule. Parking fees are outrageous.
- 5/5
I didn't eat breakfast
- 5/5
The lobby was absolutely beautiful. Staff was prompt and very useful. Rooms were clean and quiet for a hostel. Both shared bathrooms were clean. Local area was actually nice.
- 5/5
Room was clean but could hear a ton of noises and yelling from the street
- 5/5
All good - handy spot to public transport
- 5/5
Fun hotel with history in a colorful part of DTLA. Valet staff was outstanding
- 1/5
No parking, and $61 per day for valet. Charged an unreasonable resort fee. Coffee shop in the lobby was mediocre at best. Won’t be staying there again.
- 3/5
culminating in a mediocre stay that was overpriced, even at a discounted rate. The “view” is a joke!
- 4/5
Good location especially if you don't have a car. Shopsand public transport near by. Room was okay, needs a bit of renovation. A bit noisy as on the main roads. Staff was friendly. Nice rooftop.
- 5/5
Friendly staff. Clean room. Great ambiance!
- 4/5
Great place clean room great staff
- 4/5
Ok
- 4/5
Clean room, great staff. Very cool vibe. Dirty streets and questionable people outside. But that’s not the hotels fault.
- 4/5
super fun, great pool and bar on teh roof
- 3/5
Good
- 3/5
room was clean, However, when I opened the door, a very unpleasant smell wafted out, seemingly coming from the toilet.
- 4/5
You can’t beat
- 5/5
It was wonderful
- 5/5
Great service and a fun place to stay. Staff is friendly. Whole Foods is walking distance and has a great self serve food bar. The rooftop bar is fun, good food and great service.
- 4/5
Nice design, clean room, polite staff
- 5/5
Conveniently close the Nightlife nearby. Room was clean. Easy check in and check out.
- 1/5
Owners go out of their way seemingly to make guests and staff team member as uncomfortable as possible. This place has lots of potential. Too bad.
- 3/5
Friendly, professional staff. Beds need upgrade to memory foam. Most everything uncomfortable and lacking any ergonomic consideration for the elderly or disabled to the point of possible sadistic intent. I love the people there. It’s not their fault the Owners are not willing to make everyone’s experience more satisfying and enjoyable. Happy Holidays!!!
- 5/5
A great last minute choice! Super Clean room in a safe downtown perimeter in Los Angeles.
- 5/5
This place always exceeds expectations!!!AMAZING
- 5/5
Clean and easy check in. Super friendly staff. Got a bed in the quad and it was nice and easy. Will definitely stay here again next time I am in the area
- 5/5
Yes
- 2/5
The rooftop was closed, and the front desk wasn’t as pleasant as I would have hoped.
- 5/5
Nice clean rooms & welcoming staff
- 3/5
One of the outlets for charging next to the bed did not work. A previous guest left a bunch of trash/articles of clothing and housekeeping didn’t dispose. Morning of check out the toilet was clogged and nobody reported it, when I realized I reported and took nearly an hour for someone to fix, literally did it in 1 minute.
- 5/5
It's a good place for short term stay
- 5/5
Room was clean and staff was very nice
- 4/5
breakfast place was really expensive, poorly gym but everything else was great, clean and a rooftop with good music and views.
- 4/5
I was here for a short stay; the room and washrooms were spotless, and the staff was very courteous to hold my luggage for a few hours. Overall had a pleasant experience and recommend this place.
- 3/5
Room was kinda disappointing but okay overall. Parking was 70$ per night which I was not expecting and not in my budget but I didn’t really have a choice. Hotel staff was very nice but I won’t be going back again due to the unexpected parking prices
- 5/5
👍
- 5/5
Great hostel in downtown LA. Clean rooms, friendly staff, and rooftop pool with awesome views, music, and a fun vibe. Convenient location on 8th St. The hostel was clean, the vibe was relaxed, and the team was welcoming. Would stay again.
- 4/5
This is my second stay here - this time was for three days over the thanksgiving holiday weekend. Everything was great with my stay with the exception of our outdated television. We were stuck watching cable TV for three days. Last time we stayed we were able to log in to our streaming services.
- 5/5
Very pretty hotel outside was a little sketchy at night
- 4/5
If you stay at the hotel and your room is facing the street it can get loud The refrigerator is super small But i truly enjoyed my stay
- 5/5
Beautiful, comfortable, affordable and convenient location.
- 5/5
Deposit fee was little expensive
- 5/5
The staff were super friendly and fun to talk to :) I really enjoy my stay their for the fact the staff were amazing. Will see you next year when I come back for DreamState 2026
- 4/5
Great place
- 1/5
CAN I GET A REFUND
- 5/5
Very spacious place in the downtown area with good coffee and food options around. The building was built long ago but the conditions were good. Pity that we didn’t get to try the rooftop bar because of the rain.

beautiful location. nightclub disturbed sleep.
- 5/5
Yes very nice hotel it was totally awesome
- 5/5
Cleanliness of the rooms and sturdiness of the beds . The staff were very friendly and professional. Very stylish with great view of downtown . Walkable and surrounded by high end apartments . Pastry shop right next door . Nice to relax on the roof top after a long day at work . Thank you and definitely recommend it .

Beautiful and so comfortable!!

Check in process was easy breasy. The room was clean and cute. The building had so much charm. Location was great and being next to a parking garage helped so much. I will be staying here the next time I come to LA and will be trying the Freehand Brand across the country.

So my bed was comphy but i had a hard time charching my phone ...and when i came inside there was no warm water to take a shower. But instead of telling me that beforehand or put a note in the lobby, they just let me found that out on my own, and had me comedown to have a complain... that made me upset. Cause they should have told me that beforehand or had put done a note for us. The rest was good, no problems with other things and there was no breakfast included.

Great stay

No free breakfast but there is a cafe in the lobby.

Our room was extremely clean and equipped with everything we needed. The staff made it easy to check-in upon arrival, we even got to check in early

Very nice and clean place and front desk was very nice I will highly recommend staying here .
- 4/5
Yes. The only thing for a shared room. We need more towels.
- 4/5
Definition of 4 stars. Whatever you envision as 4 stars, this is it. Has all the essentials, not a spec more. Would go again, but definitely ‘just a bed and shower’ experience.
- 5/5
Yes
- 5/5
Room was clean, the mixture of men and women made me comfortable for my first time. It was a smooth stay for just being able to catch a few hours of sleep prior to catching my flight back.
- 1/5
Not is they show in the pict.
- 5/5
Nice rooftop
- 4/5
Clean room, friendly staff and good service here
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel inside and amazing room. Great service. Out front, too much smoking and open drug use right near the front door. Find a way to warn guests about legalities. I felt bad for the valet.
- 4/5
Staff was great and the room was pristine…Only negative mark was the carpet on my floor had gotten changed the day I checked in so the floor smelled of industrial glue
- 4/5
Everything was great, but the amenities could be better
- 5/5
Staff were very good. Would have liked to know that their would be major renovations on our floor creating a lot of noise the morning we left- thank goodness it didn't start earlier.
- 3/5
The room smelled like sewage and old carpet. The lights kept turning on randomly throughout the night.
- 5/5
The room was fabulous and hotel is quiet. I would prefer just additional lighting in the room but overall was great!
- 5/5
Very helpful and nice staff the people I shared my room were chill and are usually open to talk, beds are comfy and I was able to check out early with no hassle whatsoever. Definitely recommend for the price
- 5/5
Very nice for the price
- 5/5
Clean room, incredibly helpful staff, rooftop pool and bar, downtown views. Loved it!

Staff helped me immediately when there was an issue with my first room and my stay was absolutely lovely afterwards ! The breakfast I got was also great happy to say this is my go to place to stay when traveling to La

- 5/5
Yes , great and affordable menu
- 5/5
Clean room and great amenities. Great ambiance. Great for single traveler. The pool top was a great spot to stop and have a beer.
- 5/5
Everything is good
- 4/5
The hotel location is really good; central and near all public transportation options, including Metro in the 7th Street. The front desk staff could be more friendly and helpful. The beds are not comfortable and the room’s cleanliness is bad, I could feel odor of mold and dust what caused me allergies. Regarding the caution deposit they asked I didn’t receive any refund.
- 1/5
The bed was terrible, there is NO BLANKET on the bed literally like 2 sheets… the windows are like plastic, you can hear every single noise, siren and homeless person screaming all night… we got STUCK in the elevator and the staff blew it off like it was no big deal. Would never stay here again.
- 4/5
Service, staff and amenities are top notch. Happy that there is a washroom inside the shared bedroom. Only hoping that bunks have their own privacy curtains but overall, I had a great stay.
- 2/5
Attention to guests and sometimes caring about their needs with a minimum of humane attitude would be a plus - exceptions granted. I guess you get what you pay for…
- 2/5
The sink broke when I touched it.
- 5/5
Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Huge thank you to the valet attendant who was super helpful.
- 5/5
AC was great. Check-in was fast and friendly. We love this place.
- 3/5
The hotel was nice and had a good vibe. Downtown LA suffers from little pedestrian traffic, empty storefronts, and a lot of homeless people. I think the hotel has seen a decline is people.
- 1/5
The hotel was very noisy, and the music in the lobby was so loud that I couldn’t even hear the receptionist. There was also a strong smell of smoke and other substances. I left shortly after arriving and had to find another hotel that night. Very disappointing and waisting money. they were repeating that the fee is not refundable.
- 5/5
The room was clean, the staff were amazing. Valet parking was exceptional. Very cozy. Located in a great location for your entertainment needs especially when the Dodgers win the World Series.
- 2/5
Not clean, staff not personable, bed bugs, no amenities unless asked for towel and shower gel/ hair cleaning products, staff doesn’t come to clean daily, and the room stays in the dark for the 8 bedroom where it’s sticky and nasty, pictures don’t match, and noisy.
- 5/5
This is one of the best hostels in LA.
- 5/5
Clean and comfortable stay in a stylish hotel
- 4/5
Shower water pressure was fantastic. Bummed about no free/in room coffee though. City sounds were loud in the room- didn’t bother me but my partner wore ear plugs for sleep. Love the interior design elements. Breakfast burrito from the lobby coffee shop was so good!!

Staff was friendly and the lobby was nice. Rooms were average. It was a fun boutique hotel. Parking was outrageous at $61. Ouch.
- 5/5
The staff as always is amazing!
- 3/5
Very courteous staff. Rooms very basic.we happened to be there when they did their annual fire alarm check. 2 hours of very uncomfortable alarms. Ear piecing. Very expensive for the accomodations.
- 4/5
Clean and convenient
- 3/5
Elevator maintenance at time of check out , had to carry heavy luggage from the 12th floor to lobby
- 4/5
The hotel was adorable, the coffee great, the Room large and clean. The bed was just ok but the pillows were excellent. The roof top bar had a great view and the shrimp cocktail
- 5/5
Great room and nice view from the roof top
- 4/5
We enjoyed our stay at the freehand. The rooftop pool and restaurant were our favourite by far. The room was funky but the bed was a little bit hard and not super comfortable. It was a convenient location for us, as we were attending a conference at the LACC. Staff was nice (especially on the roof). 7.5/10 stay
- 3/5
Staff is amazing, the “city view” is not worth the extra charge. Being In The middle of LA be mindful you’ll be woken up by cars being revved, fighting, yelling and honking especially.
- 5/5
The rooftop bar was amazing and the bartenders were excellent. The room was great.

It dors not tv nor a place to sir, i end up with a room with 8 beds and no tv , it was not very clear i'm the website,

The common spaces seemed fairly well maintained, but the shared rooms were not very clean at all. The listing said that bedding and towels were provided, but the bedding consisted of a single top sheet with a very thin/old looking blanket. For towels, there were some random towels around the room and bathroom, but there was no clarity as to which towels were ones I could use vs. belonged to other guests of the room. The photos of the bed spaces make it appear as though there are curtains, when in fact there is a single small curtain at the head of the bed with no curtain for the main opening. The outlet in my bedspace had two plugs but both of them were "loose" to the point where plugs wouldn't stay in them very well. The shower curtain was a single fabric curtain that got soaked when you showered (there was no plastic curtain to protect the fabric). The shower drain had rust on it. There were no simple amenities beyond hand soap. Not sure when or how any of the shared room spaces get cleaned, because it didn't seem like ours was at any point. Really no frills, which is fine if that is what you're looking for.

I love this boutique hotel.
- 5/5
The room was beautiful and the staff were amazing.
- 5/5
Very nice
- 4/5
rooms were furnished comfortably but hot and stuffy. rooftop bar had a loud rave style DJ playing so loud you could not enjoy the view.
- 4/5
Nice budget room. Very affordable considering its quality and location!

The beds are comfortable and the room is very clean.

clean room great atmosphere

The hotel was amazing quick check in. The room was very clean the atheistic of the hotel is amazing. It was very loud at night made it a little difficult to fall asleep. The area is not the best when you travel with kids. They have no self parking within the premises Valet is expensive. Had to park a few blocks down. Be ready to walk if you don’t want to pay $60 for valet. Didn’t dine at the property but the restaurant area looked inviting. The area is not the best but it’s downtown so you’ll see and hear all kinds of things.
- 4/5
Water pressure was AMAZING. However, Wifi was down during my entire stay, which was CRITICAL. I spoke to one of the staffs, and it seemed like frequent occurence. I felt like it should've been addressed beforehand.
- 1/5
No me dejado entrar
- 3/5
Room was clean, but do not expect any options which are kind of given even in the motels. No coffee machines, no toaster, in general nothing in regards of food preparation (glasses, plates, bottle opener etc.) The mini fridge is a "micro fridge" in a reality. You can't put even a small pack of water there. There is 24/7 night club (Golden Gopher) right across the street, which can be affect your quite night rest. In general the location is not perfect, you can bump into very weird people walking around. The resume: If your finances let you stay in the place just a little bit more expensive - go for it!
- 4/5
I never got a receipt. They said they would email it to me. Never got one
- 5/5
The staff is excellent, and I always feel like they take good care of all of their guests. The Freehand is a beautiful historical building with a unique vibe. It’s a busy place that somehow still maintains a comfortable feeling. I always feel more “at home” here than at most other hotels. The lobby feels like a place you would want to hang out in, as opposed to a “what’s-next-on-the-list” waiting spot. I’ve never been to the restaurant inside the hotel but I’ve been to the Broken Shaker and it’s a good time. Recommend a first cocktail there because they are tasty and pretty potent! Golden Gopher is across the street. Awesome bar and the oldest in LA! Around the corner is a great coffee spot called Andante. Definitely check it out. Also recommend self parking, instead of valet. The garage attached to the building charges $35 a day with an entry on Olive Street. No ins/outs but no one wants to spend their time driving when they’re visiting LA anyways!

The staff help me change from mixed quad to female quad at no extra cost. Really appreciated it!

Was not bad but been to hostels that were much better. Mattress not that comfy, pillow flat, no top sheet. Stayed there because was taking a train in Union Station which is close. So location is great with many food choices to be had along with supermarket, pharmacies and shops. However would not stay there again.

No towels, or bathroom hygiene items. No curtains for privacy when in the bed

The corner suite King was really spacious and clean. The pool area was really nice with a live DJ and yummy drinks and snacks. The only issue I had was part of the lobby area and access to the restaurant was closed for filming and we werent able to figure out how to get to the coffee shop or restaurant.
- 5/5
For the price and amenities, we really love this place and keep coming back.
- 4/5
The staff were really nice and the place its self was good.
- 5/5
Dope hotel. Cool views. Lots of things around. But it’s DTLA, so it’s noisy and smells like pee every 30 feet or so. If you’re staying DTLA, it’s a good spot.
- 3/5
Ok hotel, rooms not so well, funny smell, not so friendly staff, didn’t like it at all

I think they need to ban food in the rooms. People are eating in the beds and storing food in the rooms. Smells!
