Reviews
La Valencia Hotel is a historic, vintage property with a prime location in La Jolla, offering stunning ocean views and excellent customer service. However, guests frequently complain about outdated rooms, poor maintenance, and high prices for the quality offered.

Not all rooms at this hotel were updated and the one I got didn’t look like the photos on Expedia at all! I booked a king size room with ocean view. When I checked in, the woman at front desk told me she “upgraded” me to a suite. Little did I know, the room was on the ground floor, tucked away in the corner of the property, I had to walk past the kitchen and some offices to get there. And it’s next to a rooftop bar, which was loud at night. She didn’t mention any of this at check in and acted like she did me a big favor. I saw her again at check out. She didn’t ask me how the stay was or any of that. I brought up the room wasn’t as expected and she was not apologetic at all and kept saying it’s twice the size and all rooms were updated in 2018. At last, she waived the resort fee “for the misunderstanding”. The whole conversation made me very uncomfortable and I definitely will not stay this hotel again.

Arrived at 3 to check in and they said room would not be ready until 4. No lobby area to speak of, only 5 chairs and bar was completely full with only six tables and outside the bar was a restaurant that was empty and man said it was for food only. Another large restaurant area was empty, so why did the hotel didn't have another area to wait. When we did check in the couple in elevator said they arrived at 1 to check in and had to wait until 4. Don't waste your time here, there are other places to stay in La Jolla!

The location is the best part of this hotel. It’s iconic rose imposing on La Jolla.
- 4/5
The staff of the hotel was absolutely top notch. Great location. Being a historic hotel you get the good and bad of that. Great location, great aesthetic, along with small rooms and other issues that come with older buildings. Worth the stay for a weekend in La Jolla.

Loved the view, atmosphere and location.

Classic hotel with beautiful views in the heart of La Jolla.

The staff were nice. It was easy to walk to shops and restaurants. I reserved a triple room which has a King bed and sofa sleeper or two queen beds. The hotel said it was not reserved so the first night they did not have a room so I had to sleep on cot the first night.

The room is large but a little dated. The service at reception was great but the restaurant was not great.

Unfortunately, this was the least satisfying hotel experience of our USA trip. The room was extremely small, had an unpleasant smell, and the air conditioning was very loud throughout the night. The room also had a connecting door, and the sound insulation was poor, so noise from outside and neighboring rooms was constantly noticeable. We made our reservation 15 days in advance and expected a much better experience for the price we paid. What disappointed us most was that although we shared our concerns, no real effort was made to compensate for the situation or improve our overall experience. Overall, we did not feel this hotel offered the comfort, quality, or value it promises, and unfortunately we would not recommend it.

I paid a lot of money for an ocean view, but it was obstructed by tents, port a potties for a marathon. I wish the hotel would have informed me that the marathon was happening right outside my room.

Still, one of the most pleasant, relaxing properties in the country. A classic old school La Jolla hotel.

This hotel is very unique and once you enter it and are on the grounds, you feel like you could be in Paris, Barcelona, side streets of London. It is such a little boutique, wonderful spot with great service and the difference between all those other places is la Valencia has unbelievable ocean views. Our room was Via Eleven and it was marvelous spotless, and a very good size with a beautiful patio overlooking the park in the ocean. The concierge and the front desk staff were great. We were loved the valet guys and they made us laugh so we felt right at home. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Great location and views from common areas. Room was quiet. Woman who checked us in to the hotel was poor. She needs many lessons in “hospitality !! Her name was Raina. She could not locate my reservation and made me feel very nervous although I knew that it was confirmed and it was her error. She finally found it but never was gracious kind or knew how to say thank you or “Welcome to the hotel “. My friend and I were stunned by her poor attitude. However the other women who worked the desk later that day were sharp and very good. I am sorry to give a bad review about one of your key employees but you are asking. I would strongly recommend that you reassign Raina to a behind the scenes position where she will not continue to offend your valuable Guests.

The property itself could also use a little TLC—the pool, for example, was missing a row of tiles, which took away from the overall impression. I left with mixed feelings. I still had a good time, but I can’t help but feel like it didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had.

Significant understaffing through out the hotel not acceptable for this grand and historic property. Lots of extra fees on the checkout bill, almost funny except it wasn't. Late checking us in. Room and shower were nice. Location is great.

Bad views, not privacy because i could hear my neighbors room and conversation For the room price I think it was one of my worst experiences in this hotel Couldn’t sleep. Shower too small with no door and water gets out To the mini tiny sink area No water the last stay and they didn’t even apologize for that

We stayed in a fantastic suite with an even better ocean view after having been upgraded free of charge. Very nice traditional luxury vibe. Our first room had some issues but we were immediately taken care of and upgraded to a fantastic suite after having made the friendly staff aware of the issue.

They called it a villa and it was $1000 a night it’s really just a room on a very noisy road across from very noisy park - the rooms are tired and older The staff is very nice, but it is so not worth the price. Also, the bed was very uncomfortable. For the prices you pay I would not go back

The room itself was great and very comfortable. The only thing I would suggest improving is the toilet fixtures—the handle felt more like something you’d find in a public restroom or bar, which seemed a bit out of place for a luxury resort.

I love classic, iconic hotels. La Valencia is not one of them. The front desk staff was unfriendly and inhospitable. Pillows are hard and lumpy. It felt very dated and lacked the charm I was hoping to find. There is so much potential here and I hope they invest in a renovation soon. The concierge and valet were professional and personable. Not many options in La Jolla but not worth the $$$.

Shame on Hotels.com for posting a picture of a Classic Junior Suite that was nothing at all like the room we were offered. Not good. No view. No balcony. The guy at the front desk finally found us an upgraded villa room that was nice. Finally got into the villa at 5. Lost an hour to refresh before dinner. The stay was pleasant, but the false advertising by Hotels.com is not at all good!!

The staff was particularly rude from the reception to check out. One particular example—my husband asked what kind of bagel was provided on the lox plate and the waiter said Everything, like it says in the menu. Plus, it was a very bad bagel Next, the bathroom could not have been any smaller its door had peeling paint Be forewarned that it is a wedding factory and the events take over everything, especially the pool, where there was no space in the pool and certainly no place to sit

There is lots of beauty and style in this hotel: we love the general vibe, architecture and the staff is awesome. However, the sleep was a challenge-despite our request of getting a quiet room. The first room was away from any elevator or party noise, but because it felt like an attic-had incredible noise at night from all the birds sitting on the roof. The second room was just over the bar so the boomy base sounds were shaking the walls throughs the day. No hope for a nap after the first sleepless night. The AC units in rooms are extremely loud when they turn on and off: it is like you basically have to wake up every time they start. So-bring your "ear protection" (not the ear plugs-but some serious ear protection) and you will be fine. For those who are not sensitive to noise-it is an awesome hotel. Just don't get your hopes too high when it comes to sleep and rest. Or maybe there is some quiet room somewhere still?

This property needs a major facelift. I paid $800+ for a last minute weekend reservation and was first given a room that smelled strongly of mildew. I went up and switched rooms and then was given a room where the AC didn’t work and the toilet would barely flush. Didn’t discover all this until the middle of the night as I arrived late and went right to bed. The room was 74 degrees all night leading to a subpar night of sleep. I am done giving this hotel chances.

We paid $800/night for this dump. The hotel had a wedding right below our window that went until midnight and the noise from the cleanup went until 4am. (There were noise machines provided in the rooms, so it is obviously not a new complaint. The mattress and bedding were cheap and uncomfortable. We got almost no sleep at all. The stay was so bad, we left halfway through the weekend to just go home. Sent them an email to describe my complaints, and they never responded. I've never written a bad review about anything online.

Gorgeous, old world charm. Closest you can get to European feeling in the US. Note the building is old so noticed a musty smell in the room and the elevator is old and tiny. Beds were comfortable, and pool area is heavenly. Staff and service were 5-star. Dining was overpriced but the views were lovely. Would absolutely stay again.

The location was perfect. One street removed from the beach front (but you will have to go down a large/long set of steps or a steep hill if you have mobility needs it might be a challenge). And right in the heart of shopping and amazing dinning options all within a ten min walk max to the farthest edge. The pool is lovely with a stunning view of the ocean. It also has a pool bar if you’d like drinks or a snack. The main restaurant (breakfast, lunch, dinner) was good if pretty expensive. With this hotel you’re definitely paying a premium for the location, so be okay with that before anything else. We were put in the building next door from the main (and lovely) building which was a bummer. It very much looked like a converted apartment building. As someone who adores hotels and hotel lobbies it was a shame I missed out on that as the building next door has a small side entrance and exit by the maintenance shed so you lose the vintage vibes of the rest of the hotel. There were small issues in the room too that just didn’t reflect the high nightly price. Examples are: - Hairdryer was a very small and cheap plastic mini one that kept cutting in an out while using it - The hotel phone didn’t work and kept disconnecting - The conditioner and shampoo refillable bottles were broken and we couldn’t get anything out of them - The TV was a 90 degree angle from the way the bed faced and it just made no sense, it gave us neck pain when had had to turn our heads sideways to watch it - Most of the charging ports on the side of the bed didn’t work - There was no central AC, just a big and slightly loud unit that was attached and stuck out from the wall Overall it felt like a $200/$250 per night value but because it’s on the ocean and in such a desirable location I paid well over double that during my stay in April

We enjoyed our stay with the exception of noice. We heard staff cleaning / moving furniture around in the restaurant / bar after it closed from 11:30pm to 1:30am. Additionally, every-time someone flushed a toilet above or around us we were woken up by the rush of water running through the walls / pipes.

However, on Monday night while we were in the Icon Suite, there was super loud music coming from a rooftop bar at a completely different property next door. It was bumping into our room until around 11:30 PM, which made it really hard to relax or wind down. All in all, some nice aspects, but the experience didn’t match the price point.

All good but our room on 8th floor was above the bar which became noisy at their closing/clean up hour, 12:30-2am

property was fine. very soft bed, so not a good fit for someone who likes a more firm mattress. Didn’t feel as luxurious as advertised.

They didnt habe the room i booked. The room they gave me had a very worn out mattress which we coukd not sleep on and air conditioner units placed on the roof kept us up all night from the noise they created. They had to give us another room. The valet parking was very unorganized and 2ce didnt bring our car up agter we called from the room. The hostess in the morning was very rude before they sat us down. Overall not a gtreat experience. The front desk supervisor Ana was very nice and helpful even though the overall Valentines werkend was ruined.

Resort fee was noted, but not noted was the additional tax on the resort fee. Wasted much time trying to reconcile final amount.

Location. That’s about it. Our 741 dollar suite had permanently stained furnishings, drapes hanging off their valance, noise HVAC, an entry ceiling spot that flickered all night, even when turned off - NO mirror light in the bathroom, had been removed and plated, shower dribbled warm, not hot, water - shower door guard was put on backwards, had to fix it myself. Depressing atmosphere, common stairwells badly scratched and scarred. Restaurant was pathetic, dry and tasteless, fabulously overpriced. Bed had no decoration, looked like a rehab center. Sad.

Location was very useful The bedroom walls are too thin - we were kept awake by the neighbors who didn’t go to sleep until 5am. The only way to block them out was to have the fan on snd the noisy aircon

Great location and service but the age of the place shows. Small bathroom in the tower & the fan never worked. We told them but no fix. Pool area is small. Great views in ocean view rooms. Bellmen were very helpful

The hotel lobby and property are lovely, and the location is fantastic. However, the vintage rooms are quite small and basic. Our ocean view room (#1015) featured a Juliet balcony (a $50/night upcharge), but to actually see the ocean, you had to step outside; otherwise, you’re left staring at the roof and an industrial air conditioning unit from the bed. The pool is small, and due to the high number of guests, lounge chairs got reserved by zealous families eager to stake their claims seemingly at dawn. A delightful surprise was the opportunity to feed the numerous seagulls that frequent the roof—perhaps the hotel should be renamed "The Jonathan" in their honor. Ultimately, while the location is a standout feature, the overall experience doesn't quite justify the price.

Beautiful historic yet updated rooms in the middle of La Jolla. Guest services all top notch during our stay: Check in with Giulianna, reservations made through concierge Ana, our bellhop Christian and Cindy with housekeeping…all above and beyond. Daily pool lunch and drinks with Mike taking great care of us. The sunset views from the bar lounge can’t be beat. It was my 2nd time staying here and can’t wait to return. Highly recommend!

Love this hotel

Advanced arrangements made with the property for 60th birthday + 30th anniversary + visiting 1st grandchild + iPrefer all in one visit yielded…nothing. Nothing any guest with no special events couldn’t get. Wasn’t expecting anything but still surprised they did nothing. The property is comfortable but ridiculously overpriced-ocean view, etc. all considered. Service was generally friendly, though we did walk out of the Sala room after being ignored for 30 minutes. Won’t return.

From the time you pull up to the property the staff is doing everything they can to make sure you have the most unbelievable experience. Greeted by valet, bag check, seamless check in, complimentary champagne, your vacation begins the moment you step onto the meticulously kept timeless property.

We love La Valencia Hotel
- 5/5
Lovely hotel, just wish the cocktail lounge was a little larger. Maybe different types of seating would help.
- 5/5
Excellent property & we really enjoyed the surrounding area!
- 4/5
However, we had an issue related to AC not functioning in the room the first night and needed to be fixed which they have addressed later. The other thing, you have to ask for everything you normally expect in a hotel and that includes small fridge/cooler etc..
- 5/5
Great staff. Perfect location for a La Jolla weekend… can walk everywhere in minutes. Comfortable, quiet and classy! Enjoyed my stay and will be returning soon!

Having said this, our room had all the consciences we expect in a modern hotel. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The bathroom was also newly updated. We especially enjoyed our time around the beautiful pool. Finally, the location of the Valencia allowed us to park our car for our whole stay. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to in La Jolla
- 4/5
Only valet parking. Extremely busy during the weekend. Beautiful spot overlooking the ocean. The hotel was a bit dated inside.
- 4/5
Bed was to high.
- 5/5
Would definitely stay again next time in La Jolla
- 5/5
The pool was incredible!
- 4/5
Vintage room with partial ocean view was also a view of the side of the building which was very unattractive.
- 3/5
The room was outdated. An AC unit from last century (loud and with a defective thermostats) that made for a hot room and poor sleep. Lighting in the room was terrible. Just the nightstand lamp with a very white lightbulb. Some of the USB ports were not operational. The bathroom door was droopy and very hard to close leaving light from outside to seep into the room. The windows were facing a wall (zero view). Would be ok for a $150-$200 hotel but this was a $700 room!
- 5/5
Very lovely experience!!! The Whaling Bar is top notch!!!
- 4/5
The room is very small and a little dated. View is great, location is perfect

This was a beautiful historic hotel in the heart of La Jolla. Easy to walk to everything and the staff was wonderful.
- 5/5
Our family had a wonderful stay at La Valencia. The property is really nice with a boutique feel. The service was excellent, the location was great, highly recommend.
- 5/5
Only negative was the TV's didn't work when we arrived and we had to get maintenance to come and fix them. The plumbing (toilet) is a bit stodgy but probably due to the age of the building. I would have positioned the second TV for straight on viewing from the bed. It was directly to one side. These are all small things and I would give the hotel a 9 out of 10. We would certainly come back.
- 5/5
Blown away by La Valencia! Loved the architecture and history of the hotel, the location, the dining options on site, and, most of all, Mike, the bartender at the pool. Highly recommend and can’t wait to go back.
- 5/5
Service is wonderful. Pricy for what the room offers. Small and nothing outstanding about the room.
- 5/5
Classic style and design, historical sight!
- 5/5
So happy I stayed at La Valencia, the staff was very accommodating, the hotel is beautiful and room was sparkling clean. It is perfectly situated to explore the beach, cliffs, sea lions and seals as well as to explore the shopping and restaurants. I would stay here every time I visit La Jolla.
- 5/5
One of my favorite hotels in California. Terrific location on a bluff overlooking the ocean, yet smack dab in the center of La Jolla, a charming beach town. You can walk to lots of delightful cafes, restaurants and shops. The hotel is 100 years old (rare for California...) and the lobby boasts a certain old-fashioned ambience - yet the rooms are elegant and contemporary in style. Staff are top notch in every way. My favorite feature was having a partial view of the ocean and being able to hear the sounds of the surf and the seagulls - despite having one of the cheaper rooms on offer. Dislikes: poor internet reception. But I'd return in a heartbeat...
- 4/5
Very good hotel, the rooms are nice
- 3/5
It was too expensive for what the hotel offered.
- 3/5
It’s a stunning property, but they seemed overwhelmed by their guests and service suffered significantly. In every interaction we waited or needed to follow up several times before receiving slow service. Every bill we received was incorrect.

Everything is perfect!

I went back to VALENCIA because my daughter was married there in May 2015 and it was a beautiful experience. I wanted to relive the experience. Sadly it was an anti climax. The breakfast was so bad I decided to go to the Queenstown cafe across the road for my breakfast after that. The room cleaning was sub standard. There was no replenishing of the complimentary water bottles and toilet amenities as well. The bed was so uncomfortable and overall considering we paid a premium for the room _ it was such a let down!
- 5/5
Absolutely beautiful and well kept historic hotel in the heart of La Jolla. We love everything about this hotel. Staff 10/10… 10/10 on everything really. I believe this was our 8th time staying here in be past 18 mo the. Can’t wait to be back again
- 5/5
La Valencia was perfect in every way for our 4 day, 7 person Thanksgiving stay. So many things to walk to including the ocean, stores, restaurants and cafes. We have people of different ages in our group and this allows everybody freedom. Rooms were fresh and spacious with palm tree/ocean views. Valet and front desk staff exceptionally welcoming. Lounge area has a spectacular view and is very nice to relax in. Pool area and front patio both have nice sitting areas where we could gather to hang out.

Just a beautiful property and the staff is amazing
- 5/5
Always so nice to relax and enjoy the pool, history of the building and amazing location!
- 4/5
This place is beautiful in an amazing location. And the staff were fun and friendly. But for $800 a night I was pretty surprised that even with an upgrade we only had a tiny little balcony with no chairs to sit. And it always chaps my hide that I have to pay $25 for parking when I’m paying $800 for a room. My husband didn’t find the bed very comfortable, but other than that it was lovely.
- 5/5
Wonderfully charming hotel with all the ambience and romance of its era and character and beautiful ocean views. Perfectly situated. A historic gem!
- 4/5
Hotel is lovely, it takes you back to old glamorous days but it is older and is not perfect. We upgraded to a balcony ocean view room and it was amazing. You will pay a hefty price here for a view though. The location is key here, very walkable to great restaurants and boutique shopping. Walkable to ocean and seal watching, long paths for walking and biking. Valet was very welcoming and friendly. Pool side is lovely but a small area, you can hear the traffic on the street. Overall lovely grounds, friendly service and center of activities. It's a popular place for weddings each weekend as we saw 3 weddings over the weekend. Side note, the bathrooms and closet space are on the smaller side.
- 3/5
The biggest challenge was there was no elevator and that stupid RESORT FEE 39.00 a night + tax making our room 40.00 a night B.S Also for 700.00 night the rooms were real small
- 5/5
Excellent customer service and the hotel is beautiful.
- 5/5
Stay longer next time for an actual vacation!

Both the elevator and the air conditioning were broken in the entire tower of rooms, the latter making it impossible to sleep. We had to check out early and drive all the way home as it was Labor Day Weekend and area hotels were booked. The rooms called “vintage” are old and small. Not worth the price tag. The staff was wonderful and did all they could, including issuing a refund… but this place could use a considerable upgrade if it wants to continue charging these prices.

It was the most amazing experience! If you are looking for a European vibe, unique architecture, history and culture, that’s the place for you!The hotel is in a perfect location, walking distance to the beach, restaurants, galleries.Service was outstanding and attentive, it definitely exceeded my expectations! Will definitely stay again next time when I’m La Jolla.
- 3/5
Lovely grounds and building. I expected a more comfortable room. Main complaints: black out shades didn’t block light; towel shed a weird fuzzy residue on my skin; pillows were too stiff and puffy for my small frame (since there were four on the bed I wish there’d been a range of thickness options); heat/aircon unit was loud and erratic (eventually I decided it made more sense to try to sleep in a hot stuffy room vs get woken up by it shuddering to life every 8 or so minutes). On the plus side, the staff who checked me in was kind and welcoming. Next time I’m in town I’ll enjoy this hotel by walking by and will stay somewhere more comfortable.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel. Amazing service. From valet, front desk, restaurant.. everyone is helpful and friendly. Grounds are amazing! Very quiet. Shops and food in walking distance. Gorgeous views.
