Reviews
The hotel has a great location and some rooms offer beautiful views, but many guests have expressed disappointment with the condition of the rooms, particularly in the older section of the hotel. The reviews are mixed, with some guests praising the amenities and customer service, while others complain about the cleanliness, maintenance, and accuracy of the online photos.
- Great location
- Beautiful views in some rooms
- Poor condition of rooms, particularly in the older section
- Inaccurate online photos and misleading advertising

The room we were assigned was small, dirty, outdated, and felt much more like an old motel than a hotel. The furniture and accommodations were worn and in need of significant updating. It was certainly not what we expected based on the photos and price we paid. As senior citizens, we were especially upset that we were placed in a room on the interior side of the property that required excessive walking and navigating numerous stairs. No consideration seemed to be given to our age or mobility. The distance and number of stairs made it extremely difficult for us to get in and out of our room. In fact, the physical demands of accessing our room became such a challenge that we were unable to attend our grandson’s graduation events as planned. Missing such a special family occasion is something we can never get back, and it was heartbreaking. To make matters worse, other members of our family who stayed at the hotel and paid the exact same rate were assigned beautifully remodeled, modern rooms that looked nothing like ours. The difference in quality was astonishing and made us feel as though we had been given one of the worst rooms on the property despite paying the

Not as advertised. No Parking available. I wasted hours to find parking. The front desk staff was abrasive and unhelpful about the hotel misleading communication that parking would not be guaranteed, street parking is virtually impossible, and there were roof tops parties with loud music late at night. The rooms were poor quality too.
- 3/5
The heavy construction takes away from the hotel hopefully it will conclude soon. Other than that it’s a good stay
- 5/5
Amazing hotel and valet staff! They were beyond helpful the entire stay! We stayed on the pines 2 bedroom suite!
- 2/5
There was only ever one person working the front desk and they were overwhelmed. They need more help and housekeeping should be more thorough, which would eliminate the repeated calls for sheets, soap, etc. For the money there's much better places in the same area. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
- 3/5
I probably would think twice about booking there for as long as the "construction" lasts. There are plenty of nice places in the area.
- 2.5/5
Place secenery beautiful area But the room was dirty and they charge me me 45 for parking after I asked if they would and they told me no….. asoon as I check out and drove off I got charged 45dollara for valet parking. It’s not worth 500$ a night! Won’t be coming back! They lied to me about charging me for valet and the room was dirty
- 2/5
The construction, rooms that are not ready for guests being filled and poor customer service training for the staff are obvious flaws. We were embarrassed to have family members stay here as well to attend a wedding.
- 5/5
Wonderful beds and view!
- 3/5
Site was under major construction. Very loud during day. No chair in room and had to go front desk for ice.
- 5/5
Perfect location right in front of the ocean and with easy access to shops and restaurants within walking distance! The room was spotless and large, the bed was super-comfy with a variety of different types of pillows to choose from, and the balcony view was breathtaking. Friendly, attentive staff and incredible access to the beach. The coffee and smoothies at the shop downstairs were delish. I can't wait to return! I highly recommend La Jolla Cove Hotel to anyone!
- 2/5
My daughter has severe allergies, so the dust and odor were especially concerning. In addition, the room did not appear to be properly cleaned, as there was old food left in a drawer that caused an unpleasant smell. Had I known about the construction and its impact, I would have chosen a different hotel. I believe guests should be informed of major construction projects before booking so they can make an informed decision.
- 5/5
We loved everything. Can’t be the location.
- 3/5
the room was clean but the air conditioner didn't work in one of the bedrooms and the oven didn't work so I had to throw the pizzas away other than that nit was ok.
- 3/5
Transparency in the booking process would have been useful. First, the view is AMAZING. The room was great as well, everything including the bed, bathroom, etc… perfect. The room was located on “an elevated location”. Sadly this was a walk around the building and then about 50 stairs to the room. No baggage service was offered and by time I hauled by overweight bag (and overweight body) to the room I was drenched in a flop sweat. The building is completely under construction, loud noise all day and I mean all day. For what we paid I would have expected some additional services, like a rooftop breakfast. However, the roof was rented and closed for private events on 2 of our 3 days and no breakfast was up there. I feel swindled.
- 2/5
i need a bigger room so I got the terrace ocean view with two bedroom 2 bathrooms. i already knew that the room was outdated which was completely fine. I was definitely mislead because no where in the pictures did it say my room was 2 levels otherwise i would have never booked it with 2 kids under 2, huge hazard, my room had 4 levels of stairs to separate the two bedrooms. The unit had no ac throughout only ac in the 2 bedrooms; we were hot throughout the stay. There was no trashcan upstairs so we had to place our trash into a neat pile, even after i asked for one they never brought one. The description said stair access only which means stairs only to get to the room which was expected. That is a whole other story. The room is so far from the main lobby you have to get into the car and drive all the way around the block into a a tiny parking lot. To get to the beach you have to walk a good 10 minutes of stairs, going down is easy but going up forget it. The hotel in under renovation so my ocean view so when i walked out to the balcony it was to a huge covered construction building. which isn’t going to be complete for another few years by the way. There was also a wedding going on Friday and it’s my view from my balcony until 10pm. The only reason i didn’t put 1 star was because the room we chose was because we walked to all the restaurants which were all on prospect street where are room was and it was easy to communicate with the front desk

There is a cafe on site that has tea and coffee and acai bowls, but the bowls are not always available. Some small amounts of pastries but no others place to eat. nearby restaurants are walking distance but make sure to bring snacks food and beverages. the cafe also closes at 5pm. The view was amazing and very close to beach. the seals do have a smell and when windy you can smell in room. Loved the location tho.
- 5/5
Beautiful view and accomodations
- 4/5
The location of this hotel should get five stars. At the moment they are going through renovation and it should be even nicer. I stayed four nights at the famous Valencia but had so many problems. Loved my ocean front room facing the cove with a large balcony was very spacious and perfect vacation spot for me. Would recommend this hotel and I would stay there next time.
- 4/5
The front desk ladies were very accommodating to our needs and inquiries. They were helpful and so nice. The room was decent, it’s not yet renovated and the appliances and fridge were old but it was clean. Beach front and very accessible.
- 2/5
Because I used a third party to book this time—they gave me the worst room they could. It was not clean. The shower was leaking and the toilet seat was broken. It was missing items like hand soap and the pre-filled bottles of shampoo/conditioner and shower gel were empty. They wanted to charge me $60 to move to a different and clean room. I asked if they had an ocean view room available and they did for $60 more a night. The manager they had prior to the one they have now, actually offered me a free upgrade. I didn’t have to ask. The customer service was awful. I have stayed there several times but this was a disappointing experience. And I don’t usually write reviews. I hope they improve and no one else experiences this type of stay.?

Location was great. Right in front of the cove. Many restaurants near by. Valet parking and friendly staff.
- 5/5
The location was fabulous, 30 seconds walk to La Jolla Cove snorkelling and many great restaurants within 10 minutes walk. The view from the ocean view rooms are also great, perfect for sunset watching with gorgeous palm trees and ocean view. The hot tub and swimming pool are also great. One downside is the noise from La Jolla Cove (because it is so close!). During the day we can constantly hear the banging noise of the restrooms doors down at the park. At night we can hear the barking of the sea lions. But I guess you do need to bear with it if you want to be this close to the cove!

Location and room were pleasant enough, but if you're looking for quiet maybe look elsewhere.
- 4/5
Due to construction, there was no self-parking, and it was $45 for valet parking. We were about an hour early for check in and room not ready, which was no problem. Clerk said they will text us as soon as room was ready. We left the hotel and returned about 2 hours later and the room was ready, the clerk forgot to text us.
- 1/5
This was not the room that we were show online. This was a totally different building. This hadn't been updated since 1960. There's no central AC there were not enough portable units to cool the whole room. Doors did not lock in the balcony. Had no linens for the sofa beds and in that room there was no available portable AC.
- 2/5
I didn’t like the $45 for valet parking. I didn’t like the fact that they are unable or unwilling to let you drop off your suitcases if you’re in the Terrence parking lot before you bring your car for valet as well as pick up your suitcases as well too. I didn’t like the 10+ steps had to make with my luggage and down with my luggage checking in and out to the terrace room. I didn’t like that the sheets were stained, as well as yes, I had a view, but the balcony when you sat down in the chairs, couldn’t even see the view because the balcony was blocking it. I didn’t like the aspect when I was checking out the woman who was there on Monday the 18 had no idea about checkout and when I tried to check out, she was trying to charge me another $300 even though I already paid. She had the wrong email set up or gave the wrong email for my room. There was also some molding in the shower. There’s no fan in the bathroom at all.

Absolutely enjoyed staying at La Jolla Cove Hotel. Although we only booked a studio suite, there was plenty of room and a comfy bed.
- 3/5
The main hotel(?) is under construction so if you want a relaxing vacation and to sleep in on a weekday, this is not the spot. Our terrace room was very nice and newly renovated, but they have some work to do still as every blow dryer they gave me (theirs not mine) did not work. Pool and hot tub were very nice and actually really close to our room.

Wasn't told from Expedia that hotel was going to be under construction and parking lot was closed. Parking had to be done through valet which I didn't mind but not being to access my vehicle right away was definitely not fun. Overall staff was understanding of the situation but the construction needs to be disclosed from either the hotel or Expedia.

A singular front desk staff young man… possibly Roberto was kind and excellent. Everyone else not so much. Floors were dirty, feet black at the end of my day in the penthouse suite getting ready for a wedding. Did not disclose property was under construction and valet service was a joke. Waited 30 min for valet and had to go fetch my own cart, no one helped (had to take two trips). Elevator was SLOW and broke on my wedding morning so had to hoof it up to the 6th floor (my guests who were disabled couldn’t come get ready with me). This particular booking was supposed to be a two bedroom suite but they said don’t worry you were “upgraded”, and gave me a double queen single room suite. Supposedly renovated but walls were paper thin! You hear EVERYTHING!!! Construction starts bright and early at 7am with a nice jack hammer. If I could rate it a 0 I would.

check in was super easy, finding parking was a little confusing but giving that fact there was construction in the area super understandable and the staff was EXTREMELY helpful!! loved my stay!!!

I was disappointed in the first room on the first floor and everyone was carting their luggage in front of balcony so was akward but i loved the set up of first room, Roberto was kind and moved us up to 4th floor but the room was different and no coffee bar with table in it and the bed wasnt as comfy as first room. The view was great and staff were very helpful. Didnt like the hefty expense on valet and had to walk pretty far to get to pools. Will stay again when the property is completed so dont hear construction at 6am!!

The location was the only positive. Our bathroom smelled like sewage, there was construction debris falling from the ceiling, the room was tiny and lacked amenities.

Bit of a mixed bag. Our room was fine; big and clean, but the main building of the Cove has been absolutely gutted out with construction, which starts at 8a

We would not stay here again. Paid extra for an ocean view and they have major construction going on so there is no sleeping in or a relaxed start to your day. Big bummer. Didn’t even want to hang out on our balcony. You’re so close to the wading pools for the seals you could smell them. No thanks. Close to bars and restaurants so that was nice. Good staff and cute rooms but our stay wasn’t great

Loud DJ on rooftop. This hotel hosts weddings on their rooftop from 4-10pm. DJ was so loud that we could no longer sit on our balcony and enjoy the beach and waves sound. Room was definitely nit in working order. Restroom door was off the hinges and wouldn't close. Faucets were loose from wall. Curtain on sliding door was stained and torn. Area was safe but sliding door did not lock. Elevator was annoyingly slow so we took the stairs. Front desk Sergio was pleasant and kind and so were the valet team.( gentleman in beanie was very helpful). Unfortunately we will not be staying here again.
- 4/5
They do have construction going on so that is what it is, the room was nice and updated inside however our balcony overlooked the back parking lot where construction workers were at and was right next to the elevator so there was literally no privacy on our balcony. The showerhead is rainfall style which if you're a woman and you don't wash your hair every day like me, you have to lean back to avoid getting your hair wet. Overall it was fine, the location is key here, walking distance to see the seals and walk down to the beaches.
- 2/5
Inconvenient Expensive Parking. Lack of Staff. No Help.

My room was nice but parking is terrible
- 4/5
There is literally not a better location than La Jolla Cove suites. We had an ocean view room with a balcony and the room was very spacious and clean. It was not outdated as some other reviews stated. We could see hundreds of sea lions from our balcony and its literally a 1 min walk to be on the beach area where they all congregate. The hotel is under major renovation but the noise really did not bother us. There are literally weddings every night on the rooftop area but the noise ends at 10 pm. The only negative was that there are very little amenities. The pool area is nice but there is no food or beverage served there. There is a great breakfast/lunch place in the hotel but if you want any alcohol served to you, you have to leave the hotel. No bar at all. There is valet parking and it is well worth the $45 a day bc you will never find a parking space near the hotel bc it is the most popular place in the cove. If you dont mind a bustling part of town this is the place for you. The sunsets are amazing here.
- 1/5
Room was expensive and came with nothing. 2 tiny trash bags. And face wash/lotion...no hand soap. Didnt say construction was going on. I wouldnt come back. Wish i wouldnt have wasted the money
- 1/5
The room I was in was next to the stairs where the guests were leaving from a wedding, and it kept me awake till 11:45 pm (although they said that the wedding would be over by 10 pm). Nothing was done to compensate for the sleepless night.

Property is unfinished construction. Staff not very helpful. Pictures doesn’t match the property and rooftop completely close for wedding and we couldn’t use it at all . All night sound of garbage shooting didn’t let us sleep . Celebrating my birthday and turn to be disaster
- 3/5
That said, the experience overall was incredibly frustrating and not worth the price. Our room itself was nice, but it was located RIGHT next to active construction, which we were not informed about when booking. The noise started early in the morning and went on throughout the day, completely disrupting the experience. On top of that, there were weddings hosted on the rooftop every single night, so we were never able to actually enjoy that space. Our balcony also had zero privacy—no ceiling or covering—so wedding guests were constantly looking down into our space, which made it uncomfortable to even sit outside. We also asked multiple times for outdoor furniture cushions so we could enjoy the balcony and view, but they were never brought to us. While the staff did offer to move us to another room, it was halfway through our stay and not worth the hassle of repacking everything for only a couple of nights. In terms of amenities, the hotel felt very lacking—there was no easy access to things like an ice machine or water fountain, and the elevator was extremely slow, which became frustrating quickly. Overall, the location and views are great, but the lack of transparency, poor communication, and missing amenities made the stay disappointing. I really wanted to

We had a one night stay, and there was a wedding that night, on a Tuesday night. They put us in the room directly next to the wedding, sharing a wall. It was extremely loud until 10pm, like the walls were shaking. The front desk was not helpful with having them turn down the music. They would not switch our rooms because they were “sold out”. If you had a sold out hotel because of a wedding, why wouldn’t you put a wedding guest in the room next to the wedding instead of a family with 3 children. Just ridiculous.

Parking was horrible due to construction. Loud boulder noise daily from construction. Was unaware of the renovation until arrival. Did not get a King size and Queen size bed in the room as requested. Was not aware that if any room changes requested that we need to notify both parties (Expedia and LaJolla Cove hotel). Only stayed from 24 March 2026. - 26 March 2026 for a wedding event. Departed early 27 March 2026.

Good third party deal however there was no reference to the construction going on ( be advised it will last 17 months as of 3/23/26)so for 500/Night getting woken up at 7 am by a drill sucked. The concierge did mention the construction work when we got there but this is after booking and paying for the room. The walls seem to be be fairly thin … our next door neighbors had a new born.. I understand having newborns ..but for 500/night the walls were as thin as a motel 6s! The room was clean and inviting the bathroom was very nice and modern. The view and location just across the Jolla cove is definitely what you are paying for. Parking is very hard to get and their valet parking does not accommodate big vehicles.

Location & room excellent. Service was very good. Staff were friendly & helpful. Half of the hotel was under major renovation. So it was noisy during the week days. Little in amenities. Valet only Parking was down the street and pretty slow, because the lot was so far away. There’s a simple cafe at the lobby. Rooftop area awesome, but reserved for weddings Fri-Sun. Obnoxiously loud, but shut down at 10pm.

This hotel is under construction and will be for most of 2026. This was not made clear until after I made the reservation. We were able to upgrade to an ocean view but it was clear our room hadn’t been used for a while. The bathroom light didn’t work and one of the floor lamps needed a lightbulb. Our room was near the meeting room and the empty water bottles were stacked outside the room for nearly two days. I wouldn’t call this an upgrade but it was a nice room otherwise.

Everything was clean and the room was very nice. The best part of course was the view! I had the Pines Ocean View Room that looked out onto the park and beach. I was a tad miffed with the $45 a night parking, however the valets were so nice and quick with getting me access to my car, I got over it. This was my first solo vacation and I felt completely safe walking everywhere in the area.

Second, the stay itself. The hotel does not have a parking lot. You are forced to use their valet parking which charges $45 dollars per night and still expect tip. There were two separate instances of workers walking into our room while we were in there. First occurrence was on the first night there well after room service hours. Second occurrence was on our last day before checking out. When we asked the front desk for a manager the, the man there stated he was the manager, I informed him that we were unhappy with our stay. After explaining what happened he tried to make less of the situation, eventually apologizing and reluctantly offered to removed two nights of our forced valet parking ($90). Third, the hotel. For a $$$$ there is no breakfast included. There is a gym and pool that they use but it is in another building in the back and you need to get permission to use it.

It was so convenient for the kids to play on the sand and walk right back to the hotel in seconds. We also loved the charming little cafe on the first floor—it was the perfect spot to start our mornings. We had such a wonderful time here and will definitely be back. Highly recommended for families!

The room was incredibly outdated and dingy - stains on all the furniture and carpet, very musty smelling. The front desk was very friendly and helpful, but we had to call and ask for towels, then had to request housekeeping, which didn’t replenish basic supplies like toilet paper - which we had to call and ask for. We weren’t warned that our door/room faced a wine bar and had a noisy crowd outside our room every day. The location was the redeeming quality of this hotel and room, but I can’t imagine staying here again after everything else was less than ideal.

Had a beautiful ocean view from our balcony. Beds were comfortable. Bathrooms were spacious. Great stay.

My family has been regulars of the hotel for approximately 20 years, and we love the location, price, and views that the hotel provides. I was disappointed to find that the cottages are not very up to date in terms of decor. The interiors feel dated, and with just a few thousand dollars invested in modern furnishings, updated fixtures, and a fresh coat of paint on the cupboards, the overall aesthetic could be significantly improved. A modern beach-chic boho style would really elevate the space and make it feel much more inviting.

Very clean and brand new room, but without that toxic brand new room smell. Extremely melt into the pillow mattress feel in a good way. Loved the room! A bit funky exterior, but because they are slowly remodeling and did not impact the stay. Unfortunately the rooftop was closed due to a wedding, so I can't comment on that. We were there for the view, but ended up really loving the room and the access to the Cove and the restaurants.

The location is what made it worth it. Literally right in front of where all the Sea Lions and Seals congregate. We were in the older building and it was decent given the age of the place. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Room was spacious.

Cons: parking is not included was really expensive but if you don’t pay for parking you’ll never find anything else close by. There is an elevator which is nice to have but it’s sketchy at best. The room was incredibly humid! We had lots of condensation on the windows and there was a mold problem in the extra room. The carpet in the room was DISGUSTING! It was very dirty and stained. Linens were stained and dingy. The shower barely worked. You could barely get the door to the balcony open or closed it was so rusted! Several light switches were nonfunctional therefore leaving the room incredibly dark! Overall, way overpriced for what we got. But we clearly paid for the view and the spare room. The pictures online make it look like a nice place but what we saw in pictures is NOT what we got. The place is outdated and not kept up with.

Cleanliness… Excellent! Staff… Excellent! Amenities… nothing mind blowing but good. The ocean view is more so a view of the cove. The AC system, it’s a bit weird. It looks like a simple digital panel to adjust however I ended up having to call the front desk for help. That’s my only complaint. Overall… Excellent!

We were asked to upgrade our room for $60 to the new renovated side, which is the room that Expedia sold me. That was a bait and switch. Expedia shows only pictures of the renovated side but sells you the older section. Than when you get there you are asked to pay more for what you ordered. Bad business Expedia

The room was described as refurbished but it definitely wasn't. In fact at the desk they said it was going to be done in March. Patio door would not open, no anti slip mat or grab bars in shower, general beaten up paint work and worn out chair. Extremely old pillows. A dump!

The room had a beautiful view. However, it was a little outdated. The pictures showed the room at lot nicer than it actually was. During my stay there was a party going on, on the rooftop. Which was not that big of a deal as we were very tired and went right to sleep. However, I think things like this should be disclosed as you are booking a room. Otherwise the location was great and I enjoyed the views.

I was very disappointed, the pictures of the room online to what you really get it's totally the opposite. False advertisement. We got an ocean view room but it was so old and run down. The carpet was stain and sticky because it was so old so disgusting to walk on it. It was so out dated, it was a green lavender color. The room had a dirty smeel. I got some bed bites at night. I didn't complain because we got there for the wedding changed and left. Then we got back late night from wedding I was just too tire. It was only my daughter and myself I didn't feel safe the hall light wasn't working at night so when we got to our room it was so dark we couldn'teven see where the key went into the door. The restroom sink looked so dirty. I didn't even showered because nothing looked clean. Never in my life have I experienced such a rundown stayed. Motel 6 have better rooms than the one we got.

We stayed in the new renovated area! We loved the porch and the location. It was right across the street from the sea lions and short walk to the adorable seals! This hotel will be great once fully renovated. The new room was very nice.. only thing could use some more comfortable pillows. I would love to come back!
- 4/5
The view and location are amazing. This is why you book here. FD staff was great! Room is in rough shape. Outlet, lights, TV didn't work. AC smells "funny". Doors loud and need service. They do have remolded rooms.

This hotel looks nothing like the photos AND neither Expedia nor the actual hotel website say anything about a new and an old building. I spent a ridiculous amount of money on this hotel. Originally, I was going to stay with my boyfriend for 6 days, 5 nights. However, after 1 night, I went to the front desk and filed a complaint about the misleading nature of the reservation. I was informed there was nothing that could be done except comping my parking. It was also not disclosed that two wedding parties had blocked out the entire renovated portion of the hotel, therefore, not allowing room to move into a better room. Then the following morning, I checked out and switched to a better, nicer, and cheaper hotel in the area. It was not clean. Sheets were dirty, shower was clearly not scrubbed prior to our check in. There were no amenities at all. Noise level was fine-- got to hear the sea lions yap which was kind of sweet. The location is convenient but that's about it. The hotel also did not take accountability for the misleading marketing by telling me "There was no statement declaring everything was renovated." Which is valid because that's not what I said. I stated only photos of the new building were posted. It's one thing for the room to be old, but it was just unmaintained and for the money it was such a waste. I actually saved money by checking out of here and moving somewhere else. There was nothing done to remedy the situation. It was either I check out and cause stress
- 3/5
They had a pool. Dated rooms. It was ok. Stay there for the location.
- 5/5
This is a lovely hotel, w/ a great staff, and in a fabulous town. The hotel provides extremely easy access to take a walk along the shore, as well as see the seals across the street. And the very easy parking is a real bonus, given how hard it is to find a place to park in town.
- 4/5
The building itself is basically a concrete block, an older concrete block. The rooms are on the small side but they were clean. You can't beat the location. The staff were all wonderful. It's a great value when considering the location.
- 5/5
Sergio was great at helping us change rooms very nice considering how busy he was
- 5/5
Next to the ocean and @L Jolla villiage. Every night walked to a different restaurant.
- 1/5
On check in I was told that I had booked through a third party site and the room i chose required walking up many stairs. I climbed 50+ steep stairs with my luggage with no offer of help. The room smelled strongly of mold. After 36 hours, even my clean clothes reeked of the smell. Stayed 2 nights, only showing up to sleep because it was not a comfortable place to be. There were weddings both nights (Sunday and Monday) with extremely loud music until 10pm. Would not stay here again.

Awesome location. Very easy parking. The room is like something you would expect when visiting a small town in the 3rd world country. Very strange for such a beautiful spot on the beach in such a beautiful town.

Renovated building very clean and large rooms
- 4/5
Can’t wait to go back :)
- 5/5
Staff was friendly. Easy and quick check in. Nice and clean. I got a spur of the moment deal which was awesome. Love this hotel’s location. Right across the street from the seals. It’s my favorite place I always come back to!
- 4/5
Nice room but load cars outside late at night.
- 3/5
The view was so beautiful but this was definitely in the older portion of the hotel. The lamps and outlets didn’t work, the water went from hot to scalding without any warning, you can hear the people upstairs from you like they are actually in your room. There was a wedding so we weren’t able to go up to the roof for the sunset. Just know what part of the hotel you’re staying in before you go.
- 3/5
Sea lions bark all day and night and it has a weird smell outside. Lots of traffic both cars and people. Our view was a public bathroom. Lots of noise from trash trucks and delivery trucks. Room was old with hard beds. Staff was great but our room was $1700 for 3 nights. Not worth the money. Won’t be back
- 5/5

- 5/5
We will definitely recommend and return here! We were offered a room in the newer renovated section but opted for larger family room in the cottages. The space was perfect with one best. Great for families with small children who go to bed early. The views are stunning! Walking distance was perfect!

Beware what you are booking. They have a non renovated original side of the hotel that is the worse stay I’ve received in my life. They do not provide pictures on Expedia of that side. When I originally booked my stay, I clicked on the “renovated” side. Upon checking in, the person told me I chose the unremodeled side when I booked, I told her there’s no way. She said we can switch you tomorrow but we are all booked out of the nicer side. I was horrified. I spent so much money. We checked in and I was immediately sick over the smell in the room. It looked worse than a motel 6 and I’ve stayed at motel 6 before. I told my children to keep their shoes on as the carpet looked black and smelled like it’s never been changed or cleaned. My daughter is little so she took her shoes off her feet were immediately black. I had her stand in the bath while I bathed her and carried her to her bed. The sheets were also dirty and the bathroom was horrific. I immediately texted them that I need to be switched or just get my money back. They couldn’t switch my room that night but did switch me the next afternoon. The difference in rooms was black and white!! The renovated side was amazing! Super clean, nice, and overall a different vibe. Just be careful and make sure you choose “the pines renovated” when you book. I remember doing that but got played.
- 4/5
It is an older building so it does show its age. They are remodeling…unfortunately the room next to us was one of them. They start at 8 am. The bed was terrible. We couldn’t connect to their internet. The staff was nice.
- 3/5
The exterior could definitely use a facelift.
- 1/5
I took it out to rince out the dust in the shower and after drying it, discovered that the AC unit was covered with mold. I showed the pictures to the front desk and was moved to the newer section of the hotel but my GF and I had breathing complications and coughing for days after leaving. Waiting to hear back from the hotel to be reimbursed.

loved everything anout it. especially snorkeling with sea lions right across the street

We paid for an ocean view room with a balcony. We were given a first floor room facing the public restrooms. Absolutely no privacy and very limited view of the ocean. At night the restroom lights were shining right in our room. All night! Very very disappointed!!!

Great view
- 5/5
Very convenient, and staffs are friendly
- 2/5
The view from the patio was nice, but overall not worth the money. The room was old, when the people in other rooms would flush their toilets, the shower would be very hot, the bed was ok, the patio furniture was uncomfortable etc. Overall, not a good experience.
- 5/5
Nice place
- 3/5
The rooms were clean but I hated the shower. Didn’t like that I could not adjust my air conditioner myself and the parking was not good
- 1/5
It was dirty, scratches on furniture. The only thing that was nice was the view. This property however is not worth staying at.
- 5/5
I enjoyed the quietness of the terrace room and how close the shopping area and park are. Great location, simple check in, would love to visit again
- 3/5
Would have been very disappointing if not for the ocean view terrace.
- 5/5
Great views and excellent location.
- 3/5
The information and pictures of the hotel are misleading. More precisely, there is not access to the beach and there is not a gym accessible. Onsite dining is not available. The breakfast area is completely limited with not enough sitting. The pool area was adequate and appeared clean.
- 2/5
We book a sweet on the redone side like I had before but got put in the old side. The room was dirty and someone had left their clothes, bed was a mess. We were able to be moved to a one bedroom for the night but come on, the price for what we got is a joke
- 2/5
This is basically a motel in major need of upgrades in an amazing location. Absolutely no frills; if you’re expecting luxury, this is not it. The photos make this look nicer than it is. With that said, the location truly can’t be beat.

Nice views
- 5/5
It was absolutely beautiful — the ocean view was breathtaking, and the staff were incredibly friendly. You just can’t beat waking up to that view. The hotel’s location, right across from the beach, made it even more perfect.
- 5/5
Great location, very busy area. Really enjoyed the pool, a nice calm away from all the tourists on the street. Lots of places to walk. Old style hotel with great staff.
- 3/5
The elevator and furniture was to old. Also doesn't have restaurants services
- 2/5
The housekeeping staff was great! Other than that we really did expect a nicer hotel!
- 5/5
Cute cafe attached. Bed comfort was excellent.
- 5/5
Third time staying there through the years. Love it!
- 3/5
The rooms still scream 1980s The clean staff cleaned our room daily which was very nice. The place is great on many levels…location but t really does need updated We would come back because of the price Parking isn’t included which is rather ridiculous. Overall not a bad stay with advantages and disadvantages
- 1/5
DO NOT STAY HERE. Total bait and switch. Photos online looked nothing like actual room. It looked like sad low rent apartment not updated in decades. Dirty. No air conditioning. No view. Ancient furnishings. Loud. Noisy. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!

I really loved how they had utensils and cooking pans ready for guests staying in two room suites. It’s hard to come by a hotel with multiple Airbnb-like suites. It’s refreshing, seeing how unique this peaceful place to stay is.
- 4/5
We loved the room and view, we did have issue getting tv fixed it took about a day almost. Communication could have been better. The housekeepers were the sweetest. I’d stay again though.

Let me start off that this was one of the worse experience for me and my family and if I could rate it it a 0 I would. Since the moment we got arrived to the hotel

Liked the convenience of having a kitchen. The bedroom has been modified to more of a modern appearance. Favorite was the view outside on the patio-enjoyed coffee and fruit out there. Easy access to pool and hot tub. Easy access to both car and the cove. You will avoid the many stairs situation if you get a parking pass prior to unpacking-avoid the temptation of free parking unless you don’t mind a steep walk with your luggage. Will come back, it was more fun than we thought it would be!
- 5/5
Perfect view, easy cove access, clean room, great shower, and hospitable staff.

This property was so dirty and rundown it was shocking. The sliding glass door to the balcony won’t lock. It was one step up from camping. My daughter (12 yrs old) and I didn’t feel safe staying there. Staff would not refund my money. Terrible! Don’t fall for the photos online like I did.
- 5/5
Our room was large and clean. The property is situated on a fairly steep cliff I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with mobility issues.
- 4/5
Great location, and good value. The sliding window wouldn’t lock, so we couldn’t use the balcony to sit and look out at the ocean. Shower needed some work. Otherwise, we enjoyed it, and would stay there again.
- 4/5
I love this hotel. The location is unbeatable.
- 1/5
Horrible stay. Room looked like it should be condemned. In fact whole building looked like that. Maintenance was sanding the floor above us day and night. Or maybe someone was squatting up there, not sure. Begged the front desk to change our room, but those lairs claimed there were no other rooms, when it was obvious half the hotel was empty. Horrible stay, will never go there again.
- 5/5
Got to hotel several hours early and they ended up upgrading our room and also got to check in at that time as well. Everyone was very nice and helpful. We slept in a king bed, bed was plenty comfy. Recommend bringing your own shampoo and conditioner and body wash because what they have doesn’t smell great and is not that good. Water pressure in shower is not very hard as well but with a little extra time it got the job done. Other than that enjoyed the stay and would stay again.

Close the water and shops

The hotel was nice with incredible views of the coast, seals and sunsets! We even saw drone show from our balcony that was in LJ Shores.
- 4/5
Greatly appreciated the list that was given to us as we checked in. It had several different resturants listed, featuring many types of cuisines, all within walking distance of the hotel.
- 1/5
This property is not being updated. The room we had was very old and run down. The furniture was gross. The carpet had stains all over it. Bathroom was old. The balcony looked like it could fall apart at any minute. Front desk called and woke us up at 11pm because of a review I wrote. It seems like they only care about the Pines side of the hotel and nothing more. It very sad because we’ve been coming here for years. Great location but hotel needs to be fixed up.
- 5/5
Stuff was friendly room was clean housekeeping were hospitable. I would definitely come back. It didn’t matter that I didn’t have a view of the ocean because the coffee shop downstairs filled that void for me. I had a great time and I miss it.

The hotel was clean, the beds were comfortable and the view was amazing. However, we couldn’t enjoy the room/ view due to wedding take off lace every night we were there and the music was so loud it was hard for the kids to sleep.
- 1/5
did so , app would “drop them”they could only move us up to another floor!! we had to agree to stay an that room was clean but we were very disappointed. there’s no microwave in room and no laundry as stated on the page.
- 1/5
I’d rather lay this terrible experience to rest. Could not pay me to stay here.
- 4/5
I loved my room, it was like a full apartment! More than I expected. However, it was about 8 flights of stairs up with no elevator. This really affected my trip and how many times I came and went! Otherwise, the area is unbeatable!
- 1/5
BEWARE SCAM- pictures are not representative of rooms. $400+ dollars for a room with stained carpets, peeling paint, rusty hinges and doors/railing. This would be a $65 hotel anywhere else. DO NOT STAY HERE. Hotels com should offer refunds and stop listing this place due to false advertising
- 1/5
I would never stay in the Cove side again. It is old, poorly maintained and has several safety issues.
- 4/5
This hotel is interesting. Most of it is very good. But the rusty stairwells and unreliable elevator are like a totally different hotel.
- 3/5
Location to the beach , I wish we would’ve know there was a wedding that Sunday I wouldn’t have booked hotel we just came in from Mexico and was headed back home so that day was supposed to be are relaxing quite day , but a wedding was held that night! And I got bite five times so with the noise and the bugs I gotten no sleep and we had to leave at 4am to catch our plane.
- 3/5
I had a Queen room that was very small - it was clean but very hot as no regular A/C just a free standing unit that never put out cold air. The drawers in the chest of drawers kept opening without being touched. There were no coat hangers in the closet. For $1,000,00 for 3 nights it was not a good deal.
- 5/5
It was very beautiful spot with a very convenient location. It was very modern and beautiful.
- 1/5
Online I booked the rooms that they advertised which weren’t the building, rooms nor views & they said our breakfast want included . Which was advertised when I booked
- 3/5
Parking was terrible! Problems in room, no lightning in few areas. Sliding doors don't lock. No room service, no phone in room. The problems were reported some issues addressed. Also had to pay for parking, that was never mentioned when reservation was made.
- 4/5
Came for the 5km run. Make sure you are aware where your room is located. We had dozens of steps to get to the room. Not a problem since there is also parking close by and we needed the exercise.
- 3/5
The location of the room was excellent with an ocean view. The room itsellf was a let down meaning it needs updating and the door needs repairs and some parts of the room needed more cleaning the table seemed sticky and dirty, but overall it was okay.
- 4/5
Cleaning staff did a good job and rooms were pretty clean. Beds were comfortable. Love the adjoining rooms for families. Property itself is dirty and cafe downstairs is never clean though the food and drinks are pretty good. Pool tables have no equipment. Pool is hard to get to and old. Loved waking up to the view, but the seals may keep you up at night.
- 2/5
The only photos shown are of the updated areas. It was very misleading. The gorgeous views posted online are of the very front of the property but are not accessible if rented out for a wedding or function. We were not told of this and did not have access to the these gorgeous views during our stay due to the negligence of the staff. The pool tables shown have NO sticks or balls to play the game with. Their response, “ I’m sorry people take them.” So take an ID and charge their room when it isn’t returned like every other hotel?? Buy more for other guests?!?! It is not fair to advertise these amenities when they are not usable or accessible to the PAYING customers. E we has a “suite” to hold our family of 5. We were located in the brown shingled old building in the photo attached. Besides old carpet and very old furniture- there was 1 tv in the living room.. none in the bedrooms. Not that I’m visiting to watch tv but for the price of a suite come on! We didn’t even have enough chairs for us to all sit down. If it states that it sleeps 6, and I’m paying for a larger room to fit all of us, we need 6 chairs! I don’t think I’m being unreasonable to say I was very disappointed in the stay. After speaking to the manager there was “ nothing he could do except wave the parking fee”.

The ocean view was amazing and the staff was extremely accomodating. Luke in particular went above and beyond to make sure our stay was amazing. Looking forward to our next visit.
- 2/5
Not as advertised or photos shown. They're two bedrooms sweet is a very old and outdated apartment the stove only had one usable burner and it didn't even work correctly it is very outdated with no air conditioning. They do have a section of the hotel that looks to be a newer build and I'm sure that is the nice part of the hotel that is pictured. The only good thing was room service was very on top of providing clean towels daily
- 1/5
Poor customer service and misrepresentation of what the hotel rooms actually looked like. They are renovating and make it seem like all the rooms are nice. Our rooms looked like project in the hood.
- 3/5
The room was ok not what was in the puctures and there was urine stains on the wall but my daughters wedding was beautifully done i give them 5 stars on the venue
- 3/5
the room cleaning could be much better
- 4/5
This is a great boutique hotel. Very convenient to the beach and seeing the numerous seals. Be forewarned we had a room on the side of the hotel. The seals are not quiet and are definitely nocturnal. Light sleepers may have an issue.
- 4/5
Location and view were definitely the best things here! Right on the cove, you can see & hear the sea lions, walk to restaurants & shops. A lot of the property is dated, A/C not working. We had a renovated room with an ocean view, but A/C didn’t keep up. There were also incredibly loud weddings held right above our room two of the nights, making it harder for everyone to go to sleep.
- 2/5
The pictures don’t represent the hotel. The pictures are actually of the nicer remodeled hotel next-door. When we asked about it, they said that it was their choice to put us where they wanted.

Great view, accommodations, & staff.

I am writing to formally express my deep dissatisfaction with a recent stay at your property. Given the $600 per night rate, my friend and I expected a comfortable, high-quality experience—what we encountered was entirely unacceptable.Upon arrival, we were forced to carry our luggage up an exhausting number of stairs, which was never disclosed at the time of booking. My friend has severe asthma, and the climb left her out of breath and in distress—she had to immediately use her inhaler upon reaching the room. This situation was not only inconvenient but presented a serious health hazard. What’s even more concerning is the complete lack of handicapped access at this hotel. This is a major violation of accessibility laws in the state of California. Not only does it create a dangerous environment for guests with disabilities or medical conditions, but it also exposes your establishment to legal liability. The issues continued once we entered the room. It reeked of mold, the terrace doors were nearly impossible to open or close, and the sofa was so dirty and worn that we avoided using it altogether. The overall condition of the room was unhygienic and unwelcoming. To add to the poor impression, one of the hotel buildings had curtains torn down and hanging in disarray, clearly visible from the street. It gave the hotel an abandoned and neglected appearance. Your front desk host attempted to justify the condition by explaining that the hotel wa

Everything about the room was clean, however the walls were very thin. Quiet hours were not respected by other guests, we were awoken multiple times by people yelling in the hallways (it was a monday night). Pool had no towels. The location is incredible, but we were underwhelmed with the average room/accomodations for the asking price.

Stunning location. The renovated tower rooms were quite lovely. There was a wedding that Thursday evening we stayed and they warned us there would be extra noise until 10 p.m. which was nice. The balconies are gorgeous and a nice bonus. The sea lions are quite lovely but can also add to the noise and go late into the night so you might want to bring ear plugs if barking sea lions might bother you. Just a heads up if you're sharing the room with a platonic friend or child that there isn't much shower privacy. I would've definitely designed that differently as a hotel owner. The room is a bit small yet the TV is gigantic and frankly I'd rather have $25- $50 off the room price than a giant TV and fancier shower with little privacy. The elevators could use upgrading. There's a coffee shop downstairs my son visited but I didn't have a chance but he enjoyed that convenience. Parking was fairly reasonable and hope they keep it that way as hotel parking is so annoying these days. Having said all that I would come back again. The view and location is pretty epic.

I stayed at your hotel this past weekend and I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with a situation I consider unacceptable. I booked a room advertised as having an ocean view, but nowhere was it mentioned that access to this room required climbing a significant number of stairs, with no elevator available, I was traveling with my elderly mother, and this was extremely inconvenient. When I informed the front desk, I was told that switching rooms would incur an additional charge, which I find completely unfair given that the issue stems from the hotel’s lack of clear information, Details such as the absence of elevator access and the physical difficulty of reaching certain rooms should be clearly stated during the booking process. It should also be indicated that these rooms are not suitable for elderly guests or individuals with mobility concerns, I hope you take this complaint seriously and make the necessary adjustments to avoid other guests having a similar experience
- 1/5
Our room wasn’t as advertised and then we could hear guests arguing all evening.
- 1/5
the pictures on the hotel website and on expedia do not show the whole hotel. the other half of the hotel is completely run down, dirty, beds are awful, carpets all need to be replaced, the elevators are useless and it looks like the hotel has not been updated in 30 years or so. The staff all ignore people smoking weed in the parking lots and are unable to assist anyone asking for help. The hotel is not family friendly and would never recommend it.
- 1/5
Worse experience, I’ve stayed in La Jolla and wanted to try this place right near the ocean. Very dusty, outdated, very humid, only portable acs in the room, no TVs in rooms either just in the living room area, could’ve gotten more for my money.
- 5/5
The room we had was huge but was pretty outdated as far as decor/furniture is concerned. Only 1 TV?! A small couch turned into bed but h no sheets & no blankets for it. no extra bedding in either bedrooms. The size of the room itself was wonderful, like a small 2 bedroom apartment located right across from pool. Amazing spot for those with kid(s) that loves to swim, like mine. So, it was very disappointing that the pool was completly booked 5-10pm for a private wedding party the day we arrived.(& I was not advised of pool closures @checked in@4pm) So, my child was really disappointed after climbing multiple level of stairs, unpacking, getting into our swimsuits only to arrive to a "POOL CLOSED" for the night sign. Thecweather was pretty cool/over cast during our stay, the hotel has a pretty early check out time of 11am. So, without paying extra $ for a later check out time, it would have been completely too cold to use the pool the next day when the pool opened at 9am. Why hotels don't give a 24hr stay time for the $ that is charged is just ridiculous. There was also some type of centipede like insect in/ our living room floor on the 2nd day. I thought it was a piece of string & grabbed it to throw away.I dropped it after I realized it wasnt string & it ran under the bedroom door jam of room. Honestly the La Jolla Cove Hotel location & staff is what makes staying here so AMAZING. It was wonderful to be able to walk and sea the sealions/wildlife anytime of thecday/night

The Staff Was Extremely Nice. The Room Wasn’t Clean
- 4/5
Great location and a nice remodeled room. The sea lions can be a bit loud at times
- 2/5
View was fantastic. Size of room was great. Condition of room was about 30 years out of date and made motel 6 look like five stars. Access was forty steps up or thirty steps down from parking or elevator. Expensive at half the price.
- 4/5
Still you can't beat the view!
- 5/5
Right next to the seals which got noisy at times but kinda fun. Walking to different places can be challenging with the smell from the poop of the cormorants. Other than that it was an awesome stay.
