Dated but well maintained. Good location. Friendly staff.

Sorry, but breakfast was a real disappointment. There was very little hot food for us to enjoy. I suppose the cost of food and the effort to prevent waste had let you to limit food available. It was dry. I had difficulty swallowing it. We decided not to eat breakfast at the hotel after that. We paid a lot to stay there. When I compare it to Hampton Inn breakfast, you really fell short. I just have to be honest.

Only complaint is that I wish the Manhattan stayed open later

We love this place. Our daughter is at SDSU and we have a mini-vacation here when we visit. Great property, great staff and great location.

I had to change rooms because the first room had mildew in the shower and the heat was not working. The second room had a loose faucet and knobs in the bathroom sink and they had to come and fix it. Wallpaper was peeling off the walls.

The breakfast was great. The gym is small. The Wi-Fi was very poor. It is in a great location. The beds were very comfortable. And the rooms are very nice.

Beds were not comfortable, super soft mattress. I weigh 112 lbs and I sunk into the mattress.

Unfortunately the AC was not cooling down the room, so it was pretty uncomfortable during our last night. Everything else was great though!

Breakfast is excellent and the hotel is very clean, the location is unbeatable.

I couldn’t see the pool. We did not like the payment method for using the guests washing machine. You had to sign up for an app , then load cash onto to the and hope it would operate and still have money on the app after using the machines. But They were a excellent pair of washer and dryer.

Complimentary breakfast in the cutest garden room, spacious room, clean, staff is SO NICE, and you can walk everywhere! Hidden gem!

This hotel is older but very clean and in a convenient location in downtown La Jolla. Our room was quiet and very clean The hotel has no bellman services. Parking and resort fee increased cost by $40 per night.

The first room I was given had a sewer smell and wasn’t clean. I was immediately changed to another room that was clean. The walls are thin here and they definitely have a plumbing issue throughout the hotel. There was no water pressure in the showers.

We love The Empress Hotel and stay there every time we visit La Jolla. The rooms are spotless and the the breakfast room is delightful and the food is adequate for a free breakfast. Centrally located, with an extremely helpful staff, this is our home away from home!

The lady managing the breakfast was very rude to all of the guests and literally slammed the door on the face when it was 9.30. Also she was not refilling milk and other items though there was 10 to 15 mins left. Being in the hospitality industry this kind of service and behavior was appauling. Suggestion is to remove the breakfast service is such sub par and rude service is provided.

The service was not good at all! The general manager was not respectful and really had a hard time supporting us as a family with children. This hotel is really more for kid free travel. Also we had some issues with the room that were never resolved. Breakfast was good. Location was good if you want a chill, near the beach experience. Hotel restaurant was upscale, and not great for kids.

Great pet friendly hotel. The staff is always welcoming. The only drawback, we arrived an hour before check-in and they had plenty of rooms available but due to a policy had to charge us $15 for the extra hour. Paid, but I'd prefer not to given we stay frequently when we have our dog. Other than that, great stay with the Empress!

No ocean view from our room, it was only on the 2nd floor and faced north. Breakfast was good and fresh. Room was clean. Bathroom could use a bit more privacy, as the door has slats. Parking is a problem, as you should get the QR code before you arrive and park in the structure across the street before checking in. TV has a sensor for the remote that can easily fall behind the dresser during cleaning, thus making the TV inoperable until you relocate the sensor. Location is great for the surrounding area and the price was decent considering we only stayed for a single Saturday night.

They transferred us due to maintenance in the first room. The staff interrupted as they forgot to refill the soaps. The second room blanket smelt horrible. The lady in the breakfast / terrace area was rude. Going to think twice before I stay here again.

The entire place was nice. Kind of pricey, but its close to the beach and its a very nice tourist spot. The lobby has snacks and treats, which is very nice. Very nice hotel the front desk were all very friendly. The breakfast was very good just wish it stayed open until 10 AM because I was only able to enjoy the breakfast once and that was on my last day before I checked out The maid service wasn't very good they only asked me once about needing towels and never came again. Not happy with my final bill they charged me a fee every night for my service dog.

Hotel was overall nice but I do have two big bites so I’m wondering if they have bed bugs. The soap was SO SCENTED that it irritated my skin and that is my main complaint otherwise it was nice. As long as they didn’t give me bed bugs I’m alright. Will update my review if I got bed bugs.

Solo traveler. In town for the annual La Jolla Cove open water swim races. The Empress is about 10 minutes walk to the cove but significantly less expensive then the hotels next the cove. The place is nice and well kept. The only thing that wasn't above average was the breakfast as it was so so.

I arrived early and was greeted with an early checkin fee so my wife and I decided to wait before checking in to save $30. I felt like it was going to the add on expenses that you get in Las Vegas resorts. Are stay was nice. Rooms are a little dated but being near the coast somewhat to be expected.

The location was amazing, just steps from the beach and close to shops and restaurants. The staff was very helpful and quickly fixed a minor AC issue in our room, which I really appreciated. The hallways and breakfast area got very warm, which made it a little uncomfortable at times.

The location of this hotel is prime, and we easily walked to everything. Our room was very quiet, and the bed was comfortable. Dining was both excellent and convenient: daily hot breakfast included and a top-rated restaurant for dinner inside the hotel. I would definitely recommend staying at the Empress Hotel when visiting La Jolla and we plan to stay here again.

Excellent choice for our girls weekend to La Jolla. Walkable to shopping, seals and super good food and drink. And bonus having the Manhattan restaurant on site with live music every night!

Our experience at Empress was great from minute we checked in to check out. The rooms are clean and spacious, the complementary breakfast was delicious and the restaurant there is to die for!! This hotel is very conveniently located as well. Would definitely stay here again!!

Same thing every morning. It was ok. Better breakfast selections. More attention to the tables being cleaned off. Orange juice was very watered down. Parking garage was difficult to get into, my QR code would not scan. the first day. Instructions were hard to understand. (Especially for Sr. citizens!)

They offered beach umbrellas and chairs upon request for use at the beach. The staff was very friendly and professional. Although the hotel does not have its parking, parking is available across the street for $25, which is complimentary for hotel guests. We only stayed one night and I recommend it.

Desk clerk held out luggage so we could do some exploring because we arrived 4 hours before check in

The property is OK. There is no bell boy or a similar position to assist with the luggage even though Empress is a boutique hotel. The staff were friendly, however.

The hotel is a little dated but it worked really nicely for my family. The breakfast was limited but really tasty. The location is perfect to see all of La Jolla.

We'd stayed here several years ago for a business conference. The great location, fantastic room, and excellent Staff left an impression. So we picked Empress Hotel for our Anniversary week-end getaway. It was even better than our first stay. Conveniently located within walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and parks. We'll be back!!

Staff were very helpful, the hotel was clean, and the room was great! I read about other hotels in the are being very outdated. Our room felt new and modern. They had bathrobes for us, the bed was comfy, and the bathroom shower was great. We received complimentary late check out of 12pm. This was truly appreciated since we were out late for a wedding and my husband had some work he needed to do before we left. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality and value of our stay here.

We had an awesome 4-day stay. The staff was absolutely amazing. The linens were lovely and the room was spacious. The heater worked perfectly and stepping out of our room was right downtown LA jolla. We walked everywhere. I will definitely stay here again. And check out the Manhattan restaurant on the first floor. Great live music every night and wonderful food.

It was a nice stay for the event we were there for and was walking distance from the beach. The breakfast was alright , the juice machine wasn’t working and my son likes apple juice. Eggs, sausage , bread and bagels were easy serve and close to the room to eat and relax .

Excellent location

I booked this room based on its reviews and walkability score. You are minutes from the beach here and also among the shops and boutiques. There’s a juicery and coffee shop near by. Lots of great restaurants in the vicinity too. Plus it’s dog friendly! We have already booked our next stay.

The room was decent, room 407. The room definitely needed some attention to detail. The ceiling in the bathroom had water damage around the fan. The fan vents were covered with lint which hadn't been cleaned for quite a while. More attention needs to be paid to the windows. It would have been nice to be able to open the window to get the ocean breeze however, the cleanliness has been neglected inside and out. The windows were dirty along with windowsills which had cobwebs inside and out. It would be nice to have a solid bathroom door instead of one that had a louvers from top to bottom. Not a lot of privacy since the bathroom was right next to the bed. Spacious room otherwise.

The bad has to do with their bathroom inside the room. The door is not solid so any noise while someone is making in the bathroom the people in the room will hear it very easily. The worst thing is probably the shower, the water is very weak and honestly I felt like I was taking a shower in a 3rd world country that has a limited supply of water. I’m not sure if this Is a California problem or what but I don’t ever remember taking a shower in a hotel in any other state with such low pressure coming out of the shower head. When I did mention and complain to the front desk they did come and change the shower head but honestly I don’t think it made a huge difference. We did not look forward to taking a shower for this specific reason and that’s not a good thing.

The staff are wonderful - they went above and beyond and were always so happy to help! The rooms are clean and comfortable and the location is in the middle of everything!

I was so excited when I reserve the hotel. But unfortunately, they give us the second floor and they have a live music at night. It was very noisy when we went to sleep until late night.and the smell of the oil from kitchen was in our room all night long other than that the location is perfect. The room was clean and the staff were nice and breakfast was good.

Empress Hotel is the best location in La Jolla Village, close to restaurants, the Conrad Theater, shopping, coffee shops, and the beach.

Valet Parking included. Very close to shopping and dinning. Don't let the outside deceive you! My family really loved this hotel and would love to stay here next time we are in La Jolla again.

Larry the Manager was great however the Expedia agents apparently did not call the property when I asked four times. Upon my visit to the hotel I decided to get another property as it is really a 2 star. Expedia would not refund the property after several attempts with multiple agents. I can go on and on but will not.

Our room was very clean, spacious and comfortable! The complimentary breakfast service was also great! Would love to stay again!

Amazing staff!! Great hotel that’s very convenient to ocean, restaurants and shops. Everything was in walking distance. The free breakfast was a great added bonus.

We were going out to dinner and needed to iron some clothes, but our iron didn’t work. I called the front desk and was told someone would bring one to us right away. It never came. We had to leave for our reservation and told the front desk. They said they would have one waiting for us when we came back. It wasn’t ready. They told us they’d bring one up to our room, which they did…5 hours after I requested it. Even then, the “new” iron didn’t work. Not happy.

Location near dining areas and beach. Breakfast is good but the lady in charge not friendly. No refill of servings despite request from guests. Overall, we are happy with our stay.

It was a lovely stay! i’m giving 5 stars because I somehow was chosen as their guest of the day?? basically someone is chosen at random to get an upgraded room. So for my anniversary, my boyfriend and I got upgraded from their cheapest room to their nicest suite! it was super cool to get a hot tub since there is no pool. the breakfast was pretty good with a variety of choices. it’s on the second floor patio if you are looking for it like we were. I didn’t use their vallet because I found street parking around the corner on Eads Ave. the hotel was empty and parking was easy to find since it was a tuesday lol. it was a quiet night, but note that trash day is wednesday so if you plan on sleeping in on a wednesday morning in any hotel in this area, you may be awoken by the trash trucks. The atmosphere was nice and it was a solid choice for my boyfriend and I to celebrate our anniversary together!

The Empress was perfect for us. We were easily able to walk our dog from the hotel around town. The hotel staff was helpful and pleasant. The room was comfortable. The breakfast service and guest laundry were great conveniences. The restaurant was excellent.

The Empress is a quaint hotel with an old-school restaurant and bar. Within walking distance of downtown and shopping areas and the beach. Valet parking was reasonable with unlimited in and out privileges. The restaurant had live piano with some great jazz standards being played. We enjoyed our stay. Having breakfast included is always a plus, but there are plenty of restaurants to choose from if you want to go out.

I loved staying here for New Years Eve and taking a walk early morning on New Years Day. The entire stay was great and I was very satisfied with the breakfast provided.

Hotel is in downtown La Jolla, a walkable area with good dining options, but far enough away from the main streets to avoid the noise. The hotel itself was average, you can tell there were parts that have been renovated, but other spots clearly dated, like the bathrooms. We were greeted by a slouchy, sullen guy in a black hoodie that didn't make a great first impression and at some point one of the housekeepers let herself into our room to look for the phone charger that she thought she left while cleaning...bizarre. The highlight was that it was walkable to Piazza 1909 and Brick and Bell.

The service from the front desk and janitorial staff was fantastic. The room itself definitely had its quirks. I had an accessible room with a king bed at (noisy) street level. The mattress was not comfortable and left my lower half aching after just a couple of hours. The toilet, though itself accessible, was positioned oddly, which made using it somewhat difficult. Additionally, a high pitched noise would sound intermittently in the bathroom area, presumably from another room using the water? It happened sporadically at all hours, which was really aggravating. On the plus side again, the continental breakfast was better than average with a clean, well-maintained serving and dining area. I did not try the restaurant (the Manhattan). Overall, got the job done.

Nice spot! Breakfast included. We have stayed here twice and enjoy it each time. Highly recommend. It is walking distance to a lot of places to eat and down to the beach.
