Reviews
Guests generally appreciate the historic charm and convenient location of the hotel, as well as the delicious breakfast and friendly staff. However, some guests have issues with the comfort of the beds and furniture, and a few have encountered cleanliness problems.
- Historic charm and convenient location
- Delicious breakfast and friendly staff
- Inconsistent comfort of beds and furniture
- Occasional cleanliness issues

I like a building with history. It was also clear that a lot of effort goes into running the property. The AC was loud and directly over our heads in bed (suite 2). We were too warm or too cold. The shower temp control and pressure was inconsistent. The third bulb hanging from the light bar was weird.

Excellent location with lots of easy free parking. Chef made us a delicious, large portion, plated breakfast each morning. She was extremely helpful answering questions about the property, surrounding sites and places to dine for dinner. Bonus- "The Barn" is located right next to the Inn and had live entertainment both nights we stayed. I highly recommend this Inn if looking to stay in Harper's Ferry!!

Clean room, very historical home with historical decor, a bit different to self check in a completely quiet house was a bit spooky but, overall, was good

We arrived by bicycle, a bit earlier than expected, and the innkeeper welcomed us with an early check-in. Bed was really comfortable, and the common areas downstairs were inviting. Loved the music and the vibe at The Barn next door, and breakfast was delicious. A great stay! There wasn't anything we didn't like.

The Innkeepers are super nice. They make you a delicious Inn-cooked breakfast each morning. The frittatas are awesome but everything else is tasty too. Rooms are clean. We would highly recommend this Inn. If we are back in Harpers Ferry for more overnights, this is the place we will stay.

Beautiful old Inn. Rooms were very nice, spacious bathroom. Close to town.
- 5/5
This was absolutely charming! I loved all the details and privacy. Was a lovely stay, next time I hope to be able to try the breakfast!
- 5/5
Played breakfast at 9am was spectacular! Also gave a great chance to talk to other guests and get tips on visiting the area from the chef. Bedroom and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. There was a little road noise and you could hear the neighboring rooms a little - but not much. What a great stay!

Exceptional breakfast. Easy, convenient parking lot behind building where the entrance is.
- 4/5
The property is historic, so it reflects the 240 years since built. If you value historical sites, this is the property for you. The Chef was very kind and thoughtful. Breakfasts were very good. Our bathroom needed updating and under the beds hadn't been dusted in a while. Comfortable and clean beds. Slow internet considering the locale. Tuesday and Wednesday nights not the best for dining options in the area.

The room was very clean, the inn is old but has an updated bathroom. It was up a flight of stairs so mobility issues would be difficult. The breakfast was freshly cooked with only one sitting at 9AM, food was excellent. I was not a big fan of no staff on the premises, everything had to be done with a phone and I am not tech savvy. The location is very convenient to visit historic area of Harper’s Ferry. Parking was not a problem.

Quaint, lovely inn with delicious breakfast!

We celebrated our first wedding anniversary at The Ledge House, and were thrilled to celebrate our 20th at the Light Horse Inn (owned by the same couple). It was a great weekend in every respect. The inn itself is a historic building with Civil War era decor and atmosphere. The breakfast was incredibly good - a huge serving and perfectly prepared. The chef prepared special gluten-free entrees for us (at our request) and the food was brought to our table as soon as we entered the dining room. The location was an easy walk to a great coffee place (Epigram) and within a mile of the overlook at Maryland Heights and all the downtown sights. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were welcoming and friendly to us. We also appreciated the books and jigsaw puzzles that were available - a relaxing way to wind down at the end of the day. Cookies in the kitchen after hours were a nice touch! The bed was a little hard, and the bathroom in our suite (room 3) had a sliding door that did not close all the way, so we didn't have the best privacy in the bathroom. Wifi signal was a little weak but did the job.

There is much to commend, mostly room comfortable, bed and pillows very much so. Little doubt adapting a 200 year old building to modern day comforts is a challenge. This location to the old down by the tracks historical center is good, despite being on a major road, is quiet after dark. Location to tour Antietam Battlefield is convenient. Breakfast is adequate, no more. Staying in room 4, the dramatically squeaky door. I gave it the farmer treatment and used cooking oil to lubricate it, given there are no staff on-site. The bathroom is a bit nippy. What's with the dim lights. Don't guests read anymore? We do. Needed our flashlights. With today's LED bulbs there's no savings surely? TV

Rooms were nice and cleaned. Breakfast chef was really good and was able to accommodate my wifes’s gluten dietary restriction. The only complaint is the water pressure was very low.
- 4/5
The check-in process was great, the lobby area spacious with comfortable seating spaces. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. We definitely appreciated the beautiful old wood floors, various antiques and preservation of historic details. The location is less than a mile from the historic Harper's Ferry. The bed was comfortable but very firm. It could do with a topper that softened it a bit. We were disappointed to have to miss breakfast (9 a.m. seems a little late to me) but the chef had "breakfast grab and go" bags made up with yogurt, fruit, a muffin, apple juice and two hard-boiled eggs that we picked up along with coffee as we left at 8 a.m. Very nice and appreciated.

The staff are extremely friendly and the rooms were clean. Love the history of the inn and the history maintained within the inn! The inn itself is close to a lot (Snallygasters, The Barn, Kelley Farm Kitchen, and Bolivar Bread Bakery are all in walking distance; and Lower Town is less than a mile away). Definitely would love to stay here again!!!
- 5/5
Not overstaffed, but addressing any concern. Exceptional. A note about Expedia, which I’ve used many times. Days before my stay, I had to cancel the third night through Expedia. Their system tried to charge me an extra half of the 3-night total for the privilege of canceling the third night. An extra chunk on top of the original total. Crazy. Light Horse Inn with reason and generosity settled it behind the scenes. Not really a good reflection on Expedia and their robots.
- 5/5
Excellent breakfast, quiet and clean. There is a music venue in the back, and a couple nice restaurants next door (one a wine bar/bistro, one a vegan place). About 20 minute walk from the historic area, about a 20 minute walk from Bolivar Heights. I really enjoyed it.
- 5/5
This is a great place to stay. Fantastic location, 0.8 miles pleasant walk to downtown, right next door to several great restaurants. I stayed in room 4 and it was so large and cozy and the vibes were immaculate. Plenty of parking, convenient to trails, staff was pleasant and accessible but gave you plenty of space and privacy. Nice and quiet at night.
- 3/5
Now the shower head. It was installed in ceiling and could not be adjusted unless you were 6 ft tall. The water was so light and slow I could barely rinse the soap off! The bed has a sheet and a very thin quilt. There were zero extra blankets and I woke in the night freezing. I had to sleep in a sweatshirt! Parking easy. Location good. Very quiet.
- 5/5
Parking was fine and we were able to walk to the historic stuff, which saved parking fees!

I like the location because it was a nice mile walk to get to the main part of town. I enjoyed all the things to see and do along the way. A couple of things needed maintenance. The light didn’t work in the half bath and the kitchen sink faucet needed to be replaced or reinstalled.

Clean room, helpful staff, delicious breakfast. Light Horse Inn was conveniently located close to downtown and the hiking trails. I would stay there again!
- 5/5
It was such a neat stay. Love the history behind it.
- 5/5
The historical aspect, the closeness to local businesses, cleanliness. Very warm and welcoming inside. Suite 3 was like a mini apartment! Furniture was a bit older, bed a bit shaky.
- 4.5/5
It is so inviting inside. Charm squared!
- 5/5
A beautiful restoration of a historic home, character and ambience for which you’d hope. The suite was very comfortable, and breakfast was superb. This is our second trip to Light Horse and we’ll be back. No issues.

Location is a little bit away from the main part of town

Great location, great rooms, great breakfast! Enjoyed the Barn bar behind as well.
- 5/5
Check-in was flawless and our room was available earlier than expected (2pm). The property is beautiful and steeped in history. The breakfast was excellent and the innkeeper was friendly and very knowledgeable of the area's attractions. Nothing.
- 3.5/5
Walking distance to town, plenty of off street parking, great location. Friendly host. Bed wasn’t comfortable and got chilly, a space heater would be a great addition.
- 5/5
This was such an amazing time!! We loved the atmosphere, ambience, and most of all the special plated meal and carrot cake by our chef, Megan. She is an amazing person! Her personal touch made our stay even more perfect! We will definitely return with friends and family this summer for a weekend trip.
- 4.5/5
Touring the town, walking close restaurants 3rd floor for 2 older people challenging steps. Bed sloped ceiling hit head
- 5/5
We had the entire place to ourself (likely due to visiting during the off-season)!
- 5/5
Beautiful staff and delicious full plated breakfast in the morning!
- 5/5
The communication from the Inn prior to checking in was wonderful. Excellent communication. When we entered suite #4 we were greeted by warm electric fire in the brick fireplace, romantic decor and warm room. Beautifully appointed and welcoming. Even had water in glass jar on the end table! The whole place was decorated for the era of this home. Great location to amenities of Harpers Ferry. Breakfast was excellent and Megan was neatly dressed with white pressed uniform as if it was 5 start hotel, she was friendly and asked how our trip was going. We had an elegant breakfast (waffles with strawberries, scrambled eggs, bacon, and cantaloupe, orange juice and water at the table).
- 5/5
The room was pretty and organized. Breakfast was delicious and both chefs were great!
- 5/5
It was close to the shops and restaurants.
- 5/5
Our check-in at The Light Horse Inn was easy, the directions were clear and simple. We walked in the entrance where a self serve coffee bar was all set up for us. The Inn was beautifully decorated with period pieces and was spotless. We went up to our room which was very spacious and very comfortable, with a nice large double sink and plenty of towels. Everything was spotless and in its place. A full breakfast is served by the Cheff and there is always coffe available and an ice machine with ice buckets if you bring your own wine to enjoy in your room. We enjoyed going across the parking lot to The Barn where you could get a drink and listen to music. The bartender made me a delicious cranberry mojito and the musicians were playing Irish music which made it hard to sit still. It’s absolutely lovely here and my husband and I look forward to coming back soon.
- 4/5
Room was great and staff were friendly.
- 5/5
Definitely recommend. Will be staying here next time we pass through.
- 5/5
Super experience in a very historic home.
- 5/5
It's a very nice historical home that has been carefully renovated. It doesn't look new but it's in very good shape, we really enjoyed our time here celebrating our wedding anniversary.
- 5/5
The room was lovely and comfortable with nice use of antiques Easy walk into the downtown Hard to find places to eat on a Mon and Tues unless you have a car
- 5/5
Convenient to historic town.
- 4/5
The rooms are very spacious and furnished with older items in keeping with the decor. If yiu are ecpecting a modern place look elsewhere. The WiFi is good. The breakfast is excellent, though the chef is the only member of the staff we saw.
- 5/5
Wonderful Bed & Breakfast, 1 mile up the hill from the Harpers Ferry historic district. The house itself was charming, I enjoyed exploring it. I absolutely loved my room, with it's old school furnishings and a jetted tub - perfect for soaking after a long day of hiking. Megan, the Chef and manager was terrific. Her breakfasts were delicious, including the omelettes she made with tomatoes from her garden. Plenty of parking - I actually never moved the car until I checked out. I worked from the outdoor seating area a couple of mornings. Be warned it's an uphill walk from the historic district, so folks with mobility challenges will want to drive it, but I enjoyed the slow stroll upwards at the end of each day, with cookies in the kitchen left for guests as an evening treat. I would absolutely stay again.
- 5/5
Stayed at the Light Horse Inn for two nights. Absolutely loved it. You have to manage expectations because this isn't an ultra modern hotel with a restaurant, bar workout facilities, etc. However if you love history, antiques and the charm of a very unique stay, Light Horse Inn is for you. The room was very large and decorated with timeless antiques. They are very responsive via text for any questions, concerns. The chef, I believe her name was Megan made me a to go breakfast because I could not stay for the sit down. I would not hesitate to stay there again, it would be my only choice for Harpers Ferry.
- 5/5
Easy clear check in process. Let us check in early. Walk downtown was longer than we thought it would be with hills. If you’re not in shape to walk would recommend driving there. Ate at the Rabbit Hole which was wonderful. Hotel was very accommodating by making us a “to go” Breakfast. Area was very quiet in spite of the fact that there was a bar with music and a fire station next door. Coffee and tea available 24/7. Just a LOVELY stay
- 5/5
Great B&B. Breakfast was exceptional. Would highly recommend.
- 5/5
This was a great find. The room was great, the staff was friendly and the food was delicious! I recommend highly.
- 5/5
This is a beautiful property with interesting history. The room was comfortable. The innkeepers are very gracious and helpful. While not located in the heart of the historic district, it’s a short walk away. Quite honestly, it’s better than being in the heart anyway - more quiet and easier parking. There is a fantastic bar just behind the house, and Snallygasters (best restaurant in town) is next door.
- 4/5
Loved the room, the entire Inn was beautiful. The second night we stayed there were fiddle players downstairs which seemed to fit.
- 4/5
Very spacious room and bath. Maybe the best breakfast I have ever had at a B&B. Friendly and gracious housekeeper/chef.
- 5/5
The chef/innkeeper, Elizabeth, regaled us with some history of the property, the area, and Civil War as it impacted the region and the property. It truly added to the charm of this inn. The room was large (the reason why was explained in the breakfast story!), the bed was super comfortable, and the bathroom was great. The remaining room appointments were matched to the period of the inn. I loved this inn and my suite!
- 5/5
Amazing breakfast every morning, and Megan is very responsive to the guests!

Nicely redone Inn, close to lots of wonderful hiking, historic sites and great restaurants.
- 4/5
Lovely b&b
- 5/5
The building is super charming as are the rooms themselves. The only drawback is that the mattresses (Weber started in two different rooms) are pretty uncomfortable because they are hard. Other than that, we have no complaints. The rates are good and the overall experience is top notch! It is our go to place in Harper’s Ferry for the foreseeable future. Highly recommended!!
- 5/5
We intend to return for a 2nd visit to the Inn.
- 5/5
It is a lovely old property, the breakfast was wonderful and it was close to good restaurants and a fun little bar.
- 4/5
Excellent location and historic charm. Walk to Harper’s Ferry. Very nice home cooked breakfast.
- 5/5
Loved the beautiful architecture and furniture, it was a very charming, elegant and interesting place to stay. Rooms were spacious and comfortable, and I enjoyed the huge bathtub! We also enjoyed the barn next door with live music.
- 4/5
Breakfast was exceptional.

Historical
- 4/5
The property is everything the owners describe and the access and amenities are great. Remember though, it's a old (very old) house (once owned by R.E. Lee's father, -hence the name) and with that should come some expectations. Creaky floors, stairs (of your room isn't on the main floor), uneven surfaces, and door gaps. Parking is close, free and convenient and in HF that's a HUGE bonus. If you're looking for a more unique experience while in the area then this is for you. If, on the other hand, you're a "Marriott" sort of traveler, this may not be your cup of tea.
- 5/5
Historic, interesting inn. Great location.
- 4/5
We loved the accommodation and breakfasts. We would however say that the property was very dusty. The skirting boards, bedroom furniture and wood work in the bathroom had not been dusted for quite some time.
- 2/5
Suite #2. No innkeeper on property. No cell service in the area of the inn. The bed was as hard as the rock the inn was built upon. Barely any padding on top of the stiff metal springs/frame – little sleep either night. Music from the Barn behind the inn was not too noticeable. Wifi went out on second day – no way to communicate with the outside world. Furniture in common areas and rooms are “old and worn out”; not antiques. Major “dust bunnies” under the bed. Cheap curtains and wall hangings. Definitely low budget renovation. Not even a box of tissues or clock in the room. Positive: the cook, Elizabeth. She was very friendly, knowledgeable of the area history and communicated it well. Overall, the “inn” was a big disappointment. Okay if you are looking to rent an uncomfortable room for the night.
- 5/5
This historic inn has been beautifully restored. The chef was so accommodating about dietary issues and about fixing us a to go breakfast when we left early. There is entertainment Wed-Sun out back in The Barn. Sadly, we didn't get to hear that. There's a nice wine bar and restaurant next door.
- 5/5
This historic inn was fabulous. The room was comfortable and clean! This is a very unique place. Breakfast was wonderful! The chef was creative and accommodating to guests with food allergies. She was very knowledgeable about the history of the inn and Harper’s Ferry and just a joy to talk to. Loved this place!
- 5/5
Historic feel/decor with modern comfort/amenities. Two great restaurants and one entertainment option within steps. Not particularly close to anything else or historic "downtown" but everything in HP a short drive (or medium walk) away. Breakfast very good and if you can't wait until 9am they provided us a to-go bag so we could get going on hike to Maryland Heights before the heat of the day. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Nice spacious room with historic decor. The entire inn is beautiful. Just a walk down a slight hill into the historic section of Harper’s Ferry. The morning breakfast was delicious and comprehensive.
- 4/5
The location was excellent. The hostess was very nice. We would have preferred more of a variety in the breakfast provided in addition to service beginning at 8 AM
- 2/5
There was no one to greet us. The room we were in hadn't had a deep clean in a while. Place hasn't been updated since the late 90s or early 2000s. Dead bugs on dusty window sills. Doors for one closet were very difficult to open. Water damage on ceilings. Dirty baseboards, floors sticky in spots. Dirty windows. Super cheap window treatments--just not what I expected. Not a great experience. We won't be returning.
- 3/5
The best thing about the stay was the staff. The staff person, Megan was wonderful. The room was a disappointment. No personal size shampoo, conditioner,or body lotion. No tissues in the room. No cable tv. Would not recommend for the price we paid.
- 5/5
Fabulous access to historic Harper’s Ferry. Plus, a great breakfast with lots of hot coffee.
- 5/5
Check in was easy using key pad for entry into house with room key in your rooms door. Room was large, clean, had seperate shower/soaking tub, comfortable king size bed and had wifi/tv service. Morning breakfest was excellent with individual meals made by a chief. Property provided outstanding directions for things to see and do as well as restrurant recommendations. Easy on site parking and nice inside common area.
- 5/5
The rooms are all very nice. There are several sitting rooms too. The chef provides a decent breakfast which was included. The only ding is that we stayed in a room with a very hard mattress. Our friends and family who stayed in other roles had very comfortable mattresses, but ours was not so much.
- 4/5
Very nice innkeeper. Breakfast was great. Property was very quirky, but nice.
- 5/5
Great place love the historical look.
- 3/5
The inn was nice. Just a bit off the path we were on. Easy parking. The door to the room didnt stay shut that great, with a gap underneath. The shower was good. Bed was comfortable. Wish breakfast had abit more flexibility on the time. There was a beeping sound that was coming from somewhere that was maddening. Maybe a smoke detectors battery going bad? Also here and there we would smell a not so great smell.....not sure. All and all definetly not a terrible place by any means. Just a few things would have made it better.
- 5/5
Friendly and helpful
- 5/5
The Light Horse Inn was lovely. We enjoyed The Barn conveniently located on the property and also the restaurant adjacent to the Inn Harpers Ferry is a beautiful area.
- 5/5
Easy walking distance to Harpers Ferry shoos and historic areas. Close to very good restaurants And bar with music venue.
- 5/5
Excellent bed and breakfast with great ambiance and the breakfast was delicious and excellent! Easy walking to the Harpers Ferry lower level for history and the main part of town for restaurants and shops! We will be back! We were greeted by the chef when we came down for morning coffee. She was excellent! Very friendly and accommodating! Breakfast was ready at 9, and the table setting was very nice. Two nice restaurants right next door and the Barn for refreshments and entertainment is right behind the Inn! Location and private parking is excellent!
- 4/5
Very lovely B&B. Large comfortable room. Short walk to museums and shops.
- 5/5
Old building with creaky warped floors and filled with lots of antique furniture. Lots of character. Room #1 had a comfy bed and a couple of old comfy chairs. Bathroom was functional with two sinks. Staff was very nice and very accommodating. A couple of nearby walkable restaurants to avoid the downtown hassle at dinner time.
- 3/5
Property needs some attention/ upgrades.
- 4/5
Staff were super friendly and helpful, the breakfast were great - just be aware that breakfast is at 9 am - this was fine for us as were staying a couple of days - it might be an issue if you wanted to leave early in the morning however the Inn did provide the option of a "Take it on the Road " breakfast option !! There is the Barn property directly behind the Inn where they have live music on certain nights - we really wanted to go and have a listen but after a really full day of walking, especially up and down hills and on trails and having a great meal at the Rabbit Hole Rest. in the old town we ran out of steam !! - Oh well there is always next time !
- 5/5
Light Horse Inn was such a great place to stay in Harpers Ferry! Parking lot in the back of the building was super convenient as going further into town, parking is scarce. Walking down the cute brick path into town for the shops and history was great! Staff was friendly and helpful providing suggestions for places to eat and things to do before arrival. Breakfast at the inn was amazing too! Highly recommend!
- 5/5
We spent our 35th wedding anniversary here and hiked Maryland Heights. Wonderful experience all around.
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Definitely would return.
