The Graduate Hotel in Evanston is generally well-liked for its charming decor, convenient location, and friendly staff. However, there are consistent complaints about the elevator situation, with many guests expressing frustration over its frequent breakdowns and slow service.
- Charming decor and ambiance
- Convenient location near Northwestern University and downtown Evanston
- Frequent elevator breakdowns and slow service
- Inconsistent service quality, particularly from bartenders

Charming hotel with authentic details and a great porch in front, beautiful interior and sizeable rooms My room was facing a wall, so very little sunlight Quite unhealthy choices for breakfast, croissants in the bar not up to standard (too fatty and heavy, not fluffy at all), decaf coffee available at the restaurant but not in the bar

Liked veranda and seating there. Location wonderful. Bathroom amply large and convenient. Generally a quiet hotel. Nice bar. Did not like dark restaurant, nor breakfast set up.Was on 5th fl and did not realize rooms higher up had view of lake.Reception area small, was only that, no place to wait if hotel busy. Reception also only a window, a little difficult to get info if needed.

Nice hotel in a great, walkable location in Evanston and would stay here again, but it’s time for some new beds. My work associate staying in a different room made the same comment.
- 1/5
Don't book here. Especially if you're of color.
- 1/5
Terrible staff. Racist overtones. No professionalism what so ever. Front desk folks are so bad.
- 3/5
Staff felt put out for helping. I ordered a $40 steak and it was sent to my room with no cutlery. It was inedible. I couldn’t cut it with my plastic fork I had from lunch. When I called to explain the smell of the steak was revolting, I was asked if I wanted ginger ale for my upset stomach.
- 4/5
It’s ok. However, not worth the price, even though it’s really convenient to Northwestern. Rooms are plain. Bathroom is plain. Bed felt like old mattress. People were very nice, and the restaurant was very good. Service was excellent even when we had a power outage caused by the city. The restaurant survived on gas grill and served. I was very impressed with them.

We also enjoyed the restaurant and Yasmine is the best waitress! Friendly and charming. Good guidance. Valet staff were fantastic. $35/night Room was small. Bed was supposed to be a queen size but was a full size. Phone didn’t work. You are paying for the location and charm of the older building. The front desk manager did comp us valet and breakfast for one day due to the concerns we had.

The room was a bit warm and when we tried to turn the cool air on, it didn’t work and it went to “warm” on its own. Not sure why this happened, but it did seem to make te room a bit warmer than we liked. Otherwise, it was a fantastic stay with the staff and restaurant.

The only reason I didn’t give an excellent rating is because I’m handicapped and had a lot of difficulty manipulating the stairs up and down to the elevator.

Wonderful hotel! I can highly recommend. I liked the decor and the student theme. Very unique and charming, as well as comfortable. Fantastic breakfast (try the overnight oats!). I was impressed by the knowledge and service mindset of the staff. They bent over backwards to let me check in early. It was very reasonably priced for the quality also.

The Graduate is very charming and I had a special room with a view and a fireplace! But it comes with all the charm of a boutique hotel, like a slow elevator (and only one small elevator), so don't expect the perks and efficiency of a franchise hotel. But I still prefer it and it feels more like home. I'll stay there again when I'm in Evanston!

Love The Graduate! Beautifully restored hotel within walking distance to everything. The staff couldn’t have been nicer and my room was clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished. Lovely lobby, cocktail lounge, and restaurant reminiscent of a country club.

Outstanding manager! Comfortable character. Nice amenities. Great location. The shower in my room was challenging -- I had to stand in the narrow space between the toilet and the shower to turn on the water and to turn the water to hot ... and the handle for controlling flow and temperature was HARD to move!

Classic old building with 'charm'. Elevators were a bit tiny and small, but otherwise the property was nice. The bar had great drinks and was cozy. There's not much area parking, but valet was easy and fair.

We used Valet Parking. The only issue I had was the way the designed the lighting in the room. One switch for all the lights. The staff were professional and its a really cute hotel. I would return.

All of the little fun details that you notice even down to the room keys resembling id’s of famous folks who went to school at Northwestern to the I’m studying door hangers to use at do not disturb. Super fun! No parking. Have to valet or park on the street and move your car every two hours. When booking there is no mention of this.

The room and beds were comfortable. The location was on a nice quiet street close to Northwestern and the lake front. Very nice. The staff were not pleasant. At check out I explained we had never received the receipt by e-mail and asked for a print out. The front desk manager seemed unhappy to do so and never said a word during the interaction as if it was an inconvenience to her. Just not a pleasant interaction.

Location near Centennial Park in a residential neighborhood with beautiful houses, room was elegantly appointed, bed was very comfortable, bathroom was beautiful and large. Parking- you have to valet car for $35 a day or park in a garage at a distance for $30 a day or move your car around on the street every two hours until 9 pm.

The location and room were perfect for our needs. The room included lovely furnishings and a handy wet bar. Will definitely stay again. Despite a relatively late check in time (4:00) our room was not ready and we waited another 40 minutes to get into it. The front desk staff was cordial and apologetic but clearly there are major staffing issues.

This cozy hotel has a great location close to the Northwestern campus and is a short walk from good restaurants, the Davis Street Metra station, and the El. Our room was comfortable and clean and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The bar and restaurant were warm and welcoming. There are a couple of parking garages very close to the hotel. Overall the hotel is a great choice and I would definitely stay there again. No complaints!

- 5/5
Nice room. Loved that everything is college/school themed, down to the do not disturb sign, and the notepad and pencil in the room! Very nice staff. There was a little delay with the valet service the first night becasue they were busy. It looked like only one valet was on at the time, but overall a very nice stay!
- 4/5
Love the vibe of this historic property. It’s a really wonderful, old property and the staff is lovely. My one complaint is that the bar gouges you. Otherwise I’d give this place five stars. It’s lovely.
- 5/5
My favorite Evanston hotel!
- 3/5
2)No coffee, tea, or microwave in the room. 3) No room service. When we picked up a light dinner from the restaurant to our room, they served little portions of soup in plastic containers (a cup or less, for $15 each), no plates or trays. It was very disappointing.
- 5/5
The staff was welcoming. The atmosphere was lively. The room was clean and comforting. We would definitely stay there again.

Clean. Helpful staff. Only issue was the restaurant is not open for lunch.
- 4/5
Staff was very nice. Beds were painfully springy and hard. One room had a heater that wouldn't come on but they brought a space heater which over heated and the windows would not open nor central unit air come on. Other than that the place is beautiful and neighborhood nice.
- 5/5
Beautiful rooms that are close to the lake and about 15 minutes from the train (CTA Purple line). It's a nice quiet escape north of Chicago.

- 5/5
What a fun place to stay! Room was spacious, service was excellent, and we loved the front porch! Just a few suggestions.....better coffee in the rooms The instant coffee didn't work for us. And pillows were too stiff, but other than that...so much to like! Would definitely return!

Great hotel. Great vibe. Rooms are small. Elevator is small. Great location to campus, downtown Evanston, the lake and the El.
- 5/5
The staff is always lovely.
- 3/5
The second time I was told they would send a technician to check/fix it right away. If they did so while I wasn’t in the room, nothing changed. The thermostat controls never worked during my stay and the room stayed cooler than needed/comfortable, particularly at night.
- 4/5
Accommodations were spacious and clean. It is across the street from a cemetery which didn’t bother me.
- 2/5
The hotel put us in a room where someone had clearly been smoking. They simply said we don’t have smoking rooms. Which is a cheap cop out. If the hotel actually cared, they would have come up and checked for themselves. I was just blown off. Luckily, I had booked this room via Hotels.com who immediately issued a full refund as you might have. I’ll be booking through them more now.
- 4/5
Cute cozy hotel. Restaurant and bar in hotel. Very close to beach and restaurants
- 4/5
I really like this hotel. I’ve stayed here a few times. Its location near the lake is so beautiful.
- 5/5
A bit dated but charming. Great location. Walkable to campus and the Lake
- 5/5
Loved the porch!
- 5/5
I’m not remembering names, but the ladies working Friday evening and Saturday morning were the nicest front desk hotel employees I’ve ever encountered. Absolutely perfect stay.
- 5/5
First off, when you get there, there’s just so much appeal. It’s a cute little hotel in an older building and fits in with the vibe and area of Evanston. When we got in, we were greeted by the nicest front desk lady (sorry, I forget her name). Check in was easy and smooth. Next, she tells us that she left a gift in our room (exciting!). The inside was just as cute and on theme as the outside. Definitely gave 50s/60s college vibes. Same with the room. Our keycards were cute little student IDs, which I thought was a nice touch. The gift that we received was a goodie bag with snacks and candy and beverages and a canvas bag. It was so cute! Overall, I loved the hotel and enjoyed our stay. The only thing that was tricky was parking. There’s only 2 hour parking around the hotel so if you were to leave your car there, it would probably get ticketed so they told us we had to move ours every 2 hours but we were gone most of the day in it anyways. This only applies for certain times throughout the day.
- 5/5
very chique, comfortable, and elegant
- 3/5
This Graduate Hotel is centrally located and stylish, but not without issues. Check-in was delayed due to an absent front desk clerk. The one tiny elevator was cramped, and our room door wouldn’t open without a weird pull before a hip shove. We only figured this out after a call to maintenance and another ride up and down the elevator. The biggest frustration was the lack of usable outlets, especially by the bed. We had to unplug a lamp in the far corner of the room just to charge our phones.
- 5/5
It was a very cute hotel and the neighborhood was very nice and relaxing
- 5/5
NOT handicapped accessible: lots of weird steps up/steps down in lobby, SMALL elevator (seems like it might have been the dumb waiter in a former life). Clean rooms and common areas, complimentary bike share, front porch with lots of rockers.
- 5/5
Unique hotel , bar is cozy and the large front porch is great . Got two parking tickets ( one from Evanston & one from Northwestern) I probably won’t drive there again .
- 5/5
Very nice old school boutique hotel.
- 4/5
The location and property itself is great. My minor issues is that there is not an ice machine so I had to constantly ask the staff for ice. Our bed could also be replaced at this point. The walls are definitely not soundproof but for the most part it was quiet.
- 5/5
Historic building, Sabrina at the front desk was A+, tiny elevator, nice room & bath, easy walk to restaurants and shops
- 5/5
Close to lake
- 5/5
The air conditioning didn't work first night but worked the next day. That was out only issue. Honestly so nice to stay in some place more unique and smaller. Great charm. Don't change anything!
- 5/5
Acquaint vibe and comfortable room. Bathroom was renovated, and the decor is unique and vintage. It is very close to a beach, nice park, train lines, and restaurants. A great place to stay if you don’t want to be in the middle of the city.
- 5/5
Charming!
- 5/5
Definitely not your run of the mill Hilton property! Very much to the time period from checkin through the period elevator & furnishings!
- 4/5
I love staying at The Graduate in Evanston. The rooms have a cool decor and the hotel maintains the history of the building it's in. It's honestly like walking back in time in a good way. After staying here a couple times, I would love for the TV casting to be more reliable and a bigger main elevator that is ADA compliant. Getting to any of the elevators and up or down in them is honestly a hassle. They're the smallest elevators I've ever seen in a hotel and to get to them you have to drag your bags up a couple random stairs. Not sure how it's ADA compliant at all. You have to be able bodied to get into the elevator. Other than that, the staff I've interacted with are great. The front doormen / valets are on it. And there's a cool bar & restaurant I'll have to check out next time I visit.
- 4/5
Friendly staff and nice grounds. Centrally located.
- 4/5
My stay at the Graduate by Hilton in Evanston, was nice. Although I found service to be a little lackluster. Nick, at reception was very pleasant, however not having enough staff made for long lines, and unanswered calls. The hotel is located in a quiet residential area, steps alway from the beach. Unfortunately, we were unable to receive housekeeping service due not having adequate staffing. Towels and toiletry requests were granted, again wait times were long. The porch offered rocking chairs for seating, which I found cute, as well as reminiscent of the south.
- 3/5
The room was nicely decorated and comfortable. The hotel is in a great location and street parking was easy. The bathroom was large and had a bathtub…again, not sure how that is billed as accessible. Regardless, we reported to the front desk that the tub drained VERY slowly (4” of water above your ankles after a shower). They said they would send engineering to fix it, but it was never fixed. Also, on Friday evening when we came back to the hotel, we requested a bucket of ice. The front desk clerk said it would be sent right up. It never arrived. It would be nice if coffee was available for guests in the bar area in the morning, rather than having to purchase a single go cup of black coffee for $4 in the restaurant.
- 4/5
It seemed that staff needed to be everywhere at once. Somewhat surprisingly it was the valet who had all the answers and delivered as requested!
- 5/5
Uniquely comfortable, does exactly what a good hotel should do: provide quiet room, desk for working, comfortable bed, clean and perfect bathroom, friendly and helpful staff. Could not be better.
- 4/5
Very good location near Northwestern University campus and Evanston downtown.
- 5/5
Sort of a travel back in time feel.
- 5/5
I love this location it was
- 2/5
Unfortunately I did not enjoy my stay at this quaint hotel. No one had mentioned you do not housekeeping unless you specially request. This is not a 4 star hotel. At best a 3 star hotel. Even though I did ask for them to come it stayed unkept. The front desk is really nice but unfortunately this hotel is like stepping into the 70s and not in a way you want. The headboard being against the wall of the door is perfect so you can hear all the doors open and close through the hallway. Just weird. The breakfast was expensive and honestly not good at all. I was dissatisfied a lot by that thinning it would be a highlight. If chef can’t fry an egg without cooking the yolk, they probably shouldn’t be frying the eggs. The exterior is charming but other than that I will pass on this location since would rather have housekeeping and good breakfast daily. Unfortunate though bc I wanted to like it. The street it’s on it’s adorable.
- 4/5
Amazing boutique hotel location in the middle of Evanston - easy walk to the Northwestern. Very helpful service.
- 4/5
My only negative is that getting luggage up to the room makes me hesitate to visit this hotel, as I have to go up 2 steps to get to the tiny elevator. So if you have a lot of luggage you may want to re-think it. The cart can’t go up those steps. The room was very nice, clean, pretty and quiet. Curtains didn’t gap very much, if at all which is a plus. Minor issues for my room this time: my refrigerator didn’t get very cold at all and I didn’t see an ice bucket. There were no tea bags, but I’m sure they would have given me some if I had asked. Having big cups of iced water in the bar was very nice.

Well-appointed, comfortable room. Charming graduate touches like the room key, do not disturb pennant, and coffee packets. Love the front porch!
- 5/5
We really like it here - it's a bit quirky, but it's very comfortable and the staff are great.

I truly enjoy staying at the Graduate Evanston. I stay there about twice a year.
- 4/5
Hotel has a lot of character. Room was ok. Heat/air was a little problematic and seems to be controlled centrally. Workout room was very small. Valet takes a bit of time, as does the elevator. Great area though.

- 5/5
Parking is the only downside, otherwise this place was fantastic.
- 3/5
Great location close to the university. But the service level was inadequate. The room phone didn’t work, the kettle didn’t work. Called for service multiple times and then express displeasure before getting anyone to come and help.
- 5/5
Great place!
- 5/5
Nick at reception was so sweet & helpful! Room was very comfortable and got a good night’s sleep.
- 4/5
Very pretty hotel, but a little heavy on Northwestern decor. If you are associated with northwestern I guess that could be fun. The TV was in an odd corner of the room- can’t lie in bed and watch. The biggest problem is the coffee situation- only instant coffee in the rooms, and no coffee in the lobby. That would help a lot especially if you don’t want to sit in the restaurant for breakfast.
- 5/5
Such a cute little hotel, convenient to Northwestern and a block from downtown Evanston. Staff and service were excellent! Rooms are cozy, and beds were ok. Restaurant was open until 10, which we really appreciated on our arrival, though it might consider adding a hefty vegan bowl or salad option. Overall, we loved this hotel and would come back again.
- 5/5
Amazing!!!
- 3/5
Unfortunately, front desk and bar Staff was not particularly friendly. Decor is dark and moody. Quite different from the other Graduates we have stayed at.
- 5/5
Friendly helpful staff, excellent breakfast, nice location, clean/ quiet/ comfortable stay. Thank you to all at the Graduate!
- 5/5
Love the Graduate Evanston! The staff is so friendly and the hotel is perfect!
- 3/5
It is a lovely property but smallish rooms. Be warned, the room next door had their TV on and it was very loud/could here it through our walls making it difficult to get to sleep. No dedicated parking available, you'll need to find your own on the street.
- 5/5
Friendly, efficient staff. Easy valet parking
- 5/5
Beautiful, old building with thick cement block and brick walls which made it very quiet. Pretty carpet and furnishings in the room. Much nicer than the seemingly sterile, standard chain hotel.
- 5/5
Super cool decor, comfy room with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan
- 5/5
Great mattress and lovely decor
- 2/5
The heater in the room made rattling weird noises and was clearly falling apart. Despite two phone calls over two days and promises that engineering would fix it, it was never fixed and I constantly woke up. The bathroom also had pink mold in the corners.
- 5/5
It was pleasant stay

I enjoy staying at Graduate Hotels. It's a fun atmosphere, clean and a great location!

We had a great experience. The only thing that was disappointing was that coffee was not available in a simple way. We had to wait in line for at least 20 minutes to get 2 cups of coffee to go. We have been staying at The Homestead for years and coffee has always been complimentary and readily available. Not sure why this change was made but we hope this returns to complimentary coffee again. We don’t mind paying for it but it definitely needs to be more convenient.

I liked that it was an older elegant hotel. Great retro funishings in the rooms. Modern, clean bathroom. Nice location; close to restaurants, coffee shops.

The only downside was bathroom door in our room got stuck and was difficult to open. Resolved the problem ourselves and didn't discuss with the hotel staff.

Great place and very close to restaurants and the lake

Love the vibe!!

Exactly what it purports to be.

Great location near downtown Evanston, in a beautifully updated, century-old building. The parking valets were a bit overwhelmed when we arrived, and there isn’t enough curb space on the street to accommodate multiple vehicles arriving at the same time.

Fabulous location, staff was very hit or miss on friendliness. Has a great bar, but the bartender could have been nicer. Needs a few bits of extras being that the rooms are very minimalist…hooks for coats, an extra chair, a place for cosmetics in the bathroom due to the pedestal sink

I loved this place, very classy for our stay

So cute for the holidays ♥️

Remote worked inconsistently, probably needed a battery change. Otherwise room was nice and comfy. Homestead restaurant had a yummy breakfast.

The room was amazing. Lake view with a fireplace (non functional). Great service and location for my wife's graduation ceremony from Northwestern. Our 2nd stay there and we love it.

My favorite hotel in the Chicago area. Charming and super convenient.

Cute little boutique hotel with rooms that have the original character of the apartment building it used to be. No room service. Restaurant with limited options and very pricey. Asked for coffee in the morning and it was brown water - horrible. I was also given the wrong room when I arrived. Next door guests were very noisy - thin walls. Way too pricey for what you get. Would not stay again.

Very convenient location, blocks away from downtown and about as close as you can get to Northwestern University.

Great location and vibe.

We were just there one night this time, but the staff was warm and welcoming, personable and courteous yet efficient.

A good option for a weekend when visiting your kid in college!

I look forward to staying here again soon.

Great stay.

I was pleasantly by the condition of the Hotel. An amazing hotel for the price, obviously make sure to book well in advance if your stay coincides with NW University events. The rooms are quaint with high quality furnishings. The hotel is also located walking distance from anything you might want to do during your stay!

Nice, cozy hotel. Website said restaurant was open all day, but in fact it was closed from 10 am - 5 pm and only had limited breakfast options. Staff was nice, and responsive to our requests.

friendly staff cozy room

The service was terrible. I had to make each request several times. I was given a room next to a broken elevator making a beeping sound. My room had to be changed for this reason at 2 AM. The person making the change was unkind about it and refused to take responsibility. It was one of the worst hotel stays I've ever had. Very disappointing, as I was exhausted and had looked forward to a comfortable room.
